[Q] Wifi signal?
Does anyone get a weak wifi signal with their Nexus S? Whenever I connect to my at home wifi I never get full bars and something I'll just randomly lose signal. Also it seems to go pretty slow. I used to have the Mytouch4G and it work flawlessly with the wifi. Anyone else having this problem?

OMG yesss I do.
Just about a room away I loose signal, almost completely. = 0
IDK, but I see more flaws every day that passes
Mine's been working fine over Wi-Fi. I'm pretty glad it does too, because my only data option with it is Wi-Fi..

Wifi has been working great for me. It reconnects automatically and doesn't drop. The signal seems on par with my nexus one.
Speed wise, is it on par with the 3G network?
[Q] Wifi does not work anymore after rooting :(
So, I unlocked my Android 2.3.1 and rooted it ... But if I click on wifi so I could connect to my modem it says Error and wont even search or anything. I tried reseting too but still no luck .. What is the problem and how to fix this ??
That's odd, I didn't have any issues with wifi as I connected to Android Market to downloaded ROM Manager during my rooting process earlier. Have you tried flashing a custom ROM on your device to see if it'll fix it?
No I didnt, would that work? .. A friend told me to install a new "kernel" but I dont want to overwhelm my android with custom made kernels .
your problem is you used one of the quick methods of rooting your phone, which used a kernel that wasn't from the exact rom you have.
if your on stock 2.3.1, you will need the stock 2.3.1 boot.img, and then you'll need to root it manually the long way via adb command line. search the nexus s development section for how-to's. they are all there.
i too had this problem, had to install MoDaCo ROM to fix it, but i dont regret rooting, i now have custom rom and over clocked cpu on the nexus s
you have two options, either to flash NANDROID backup to un-root and return to stock or install a custom ROM, i choose MoDaCo bcoz of its UI, it looks and feels just like the stock one.

Yes, that's the point of MoDaCo roms, to make minimal changes to the look and feel of the phone, but to improve performance with his custom optimizations.
[Q] Nexus S wifi issue. Unable to access wifi from my nexus s.
Hi Guys,
I was able to connect to my wifi network for a day. I am using windows 7 machine as hotspot with connectify. From second day I am unable to connect to any wifi network. I did factory reset my nexus s but no results . Can some one help me how to solve this issue?
Observations:
*when i use static ip, It shows connected but the bars are in white instead of green color and i am unable to browse.
*When i use dynamic ip I am unable to connect to wifi. It shows obtaining Ip and never connects.
*In connectify when I was able to connect to wifi the device is shown with an android device name. but now the device is shown as unknown.

[Q] Nexus S Wifi Settings - force close
Hi all,
Just got a new Nexus S - all was well at home. Took it to work today and noticed something very odd. It was fine until entering the wifi settings menu - at which point it dramatically slowed down. I got two 'not responding, close or wait' messages before being able to join the network.... all other settings are fine - just the wifi area.
Weird - wondering what could cause this... too many wifi networks broadcasting (am in middle of London)...?
Anyone seen anything similar?

Too many WiFi around you shouldn't cause that.
Try rebooting and setting again if you haven't already.
Hmmm - rebooted and still have the same issue. At home, or even a block away from the office it all works fine. But in the office itself, although it connects and uses the wifi fine, the settings page is VERY slow to load and gives me the wait/force close message.
Out of interest - I also have 'wifi analyser' from the marketplace. This too is very slow and unresponsive when in the office.
So - it is definately something to do with the wifi here.... but have not got a clue what. Before I join the wifi, or when I am physically somewhere else it all works fine.
Wifi is WPA-TKIP, the key is a very long jumble of letters but surely that is not an issue.
Strange eh!!!

[Q] Possible WiFi problem?
Hi there, just bought a Nexus S, also used to have Nexus One.
The thing is for some wireless networks even though I enter the password correctly, it says connected and still there is no connection at all. (I mean browser tries to connect but at the end it says page could not be found) I even tried with an ad-hoc network that I created with my laptop but still the problem exists.
At home I'm able to my network without a problem. The type of network I'm trying to connect is: WPA2 Personal with AES. Is there any known issue about AES at Android system? Afaik there is no way to change the encryption used right?
this might actually not be a nexus S issue.
some modems/switches/routers are configured to block certain devices/applications/package's
we have a modem and router with both wifi.
but my psp/nDS cant connect to the modem, but can connect with the router

i have a similar problem. My Nexus S connects to my router only within a few hours after a router reset. Then it stucks at "obtaining ip" and never connected before I do another router reset.
My home wifi is WPA2 type, and for WEP type wifi my NS never got connected.
hey folks, i got massive wifi connectivity problems, but only with a special wifi at college.
it's a 802.1x wifi, with EAP (PEAP) and MSCHAPV2.
i configured it correctly (for sure), as i can connect to it manually. but it is not stable, though i got full signal strength. it keeps on dropping after a few minutes with the phone sleeping... when i turn it back on i have to reconnect manually, sometimes i have to deactivate/activate wifi, sometimes it is enough just to connect manually again.
i tried some roms and kernels already, with no effect (arhd 3.1.1, insertcoin from 2.2.1 up to 2.4.3-2 and 2.2.5SSE; kernels were faux 0.1.0 - 0.1.4, bricked 0.2 - 0.4). also stock rom doesn't fix the problem.
i think it's htc based.. somebody else got this problem? is there a workaround availible?
Nobody? Bump...

Hi,
I think it's HTC based too... I've seen this problem with my HD2 and now the Sensation (definitely hoped it was only an HD2 problem but here I am again, looking for a solution).
The symptoms are that you see the wifi connected with, say, full signal, but when you try to open Google Talk or the browser or anything, no data can be reached. This happens particularly when you switch from one AP to another (e.g. walk across compass) or if you leave the network area and then come back.
Do we have similar ones? My school has a registered-MAC network that also doesn't work well with the phone, so I believe it's more to do with how the network infrastructure is set up. However, my friends with non-HTC devices do not report such problems. It's also possible that my similar program installs on both phones do some conflicting with networking, but it's doubtful...
Does anyone have similar experiences?
Edit: It'd almost be preferable for my phone to just drop wifi entirely when the connection fails, since it believes it otherwise has a connection, but everything time-out-s. Having it switch to 3g when it stops working would be preferable to having no networking and no push email or messages...
You can try going into wifi advanced settings and setting the wifi sleep policy to "never", and see if it that fixes it. My high school uses the same 802.1x EAP/MSCHAPv2 security and I also have issues with it, but I think there it's because of such a dense network of access points (there's an access point in EVERY room) it's more interference problems and the phone jumping from AP to AP rather than issues with the phone itself. Download wifi analyzer from the market and check the different access points and if their channels are overlapping and compare their signal levels. If the signal levels are close, the phone might be jumping from AP to AP like mine does.
Dropping WiFi
May not apply to you. But in my case, when I have the WiFi Calling App turned on, I will lose connection to my Home WiFi which is password protected. And when I try to re-connect I have to enter the password again. With out WiFi Calling enabled, I stay connected till I disconnect. Not sure if this would act the same with a different router or without password protection, and since I have a good signal at my house I haven't checked all possibilities.

Thanks for your reply!
I've never set wifi sleep policy to anything but "never," and I've toggled between "Best Wifi Performance" and the alternative of having that disabled.
I've hit in *#*#4636*#*# and looked at the wifi state. It continues to say it's connected with COMPLETED Supplicant State and a valid IP address. Ping test, of course, fails, when this happens.
This happens for me both with mac-registered (insecure) networks and 802.1x networks on campus, but I've found that wifi is rock stable on most home networks, for example...

It might just have to do with the access point interference. I know that my phone has trouble handling the access point switching, regardless of the phone or ROM. My old 3g slide did the same thing. If it only happens on 802.1x networks and it happens on every ROM (which I'm 90% sure it does) then it's probably not something you can change.

I understand that, but the part that gets me is that my roommate's Galaxy S has no such problems.
I've tried many different ROMs when I was on the HD2; I'm hoping I won't have to go through that again!
Oh, then maybe it is a phone issue. I always thought it was just android but I've always used HTC devices. I don't know exactly how 802.1x encryption works, but if it's on a hardware level like some encryption algorithms then it could be HTC specific.
It's definitely a HTC problem. Friend of mine doesn't have such problems as well, he has a SGS2. Everything is configured like it should be, WiFi drop on "never", as already witten in the first post.

i'm trying to get it fixed by posting some logs to show-p1984, kernel developer of bricked. he is also german, which makes it easier to talk about this kind of 'special' problem for me i will keep this thread updated if there is any solution availible.

That sounds great! Let me know if I can contribute as well (logs? something else?).
I was worried it has something to do with the custom kernels we're all using (i.e. power modes for the wifi and such, but I did edit an HD2 kernel to turn that off and it didn't work). Since show-p1984 is thinking about this now, I'm sure he knows what's up with everything kernel=related to wifi...
When I have time, I'll definitely try a stock ROM again to see how it goes, since there aren't as many complaints about this problem as I'd expect there to be (i.e. ... maybe only us custom ROM users may have this problem with certain wifi infrastructures)...
Hello!
Not sure if anybody's still interested in this problem, but I tried the EU stock rom and it didn't change matters.
Basically, moving around campus makes my phone drop the internet connection on wifi, but not the wifi connection itself. Again, this doesn't happen on Samsung phones, and cycling the wifi fixes this problem.
See attachments for what shows up; it looks like after cycling I get a new lease and it works again.
So do people think the latest bricked kernel fixes this issue?
Unfortunately it doesn't. But at least we have a kernel dev who is aware of this problem. I got no doubt that it'll be fixed one day ;-)

Still no change... As it's a driver of the wifi module, maybe it'll never be fixed at all. Anyways I hope, that maybe with the ICS update a change will come. Also there is show, who is aware of it.

Unfortunately - no
I'm running InsertCoin 4.4.6 based on 3.25.xxx leak with ICS. It's still not working... Maybe with the final release from HTC.
I feel so relieved today .. My A2 connection is rock solid for the last 3 hours.
I had tried everything before --- static ip , apps on phone etc to get rid of the intermittent disconnection issue. Nothing worked.
Solution - this worked in my case.
I flashed my Dlink Dir-615 router with DD-Wrt firmware.
I found a ready-to-eat guide for my particular model :
http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=550652
So check if there is a dd-wrt firmware for your router too. If not , there are other open-source firmwares too like tomato etc
Finally I set my security to WPA2- EAS .. and reserved a IP for my A2
and have set this static ip in my phone to be on a safer side.
I realized the issue could be with my router , when i had no disconnection at my friends place.
However i will still continue to face connection issues at college after the spring break. Probably android requires very strict wifi protocol adherence, and dd-wrt follows everything.
Hope this helps fellow noobs
Thx. I also have another possible solution. Most of the time it is indeed a router problem. What worked for me was turning of all my other devices using Wi-Fi such as laptop and other things and connect my phone first and then turning on the other devices. Never had a problem since.

Wi-Fi issued resolved for Ubquiti Wifi router model Power ApN
I have a Asian MB865 unrooted 2.3.6. From day one I had difficulty connecting to my home wifi router a US brand called Ubiquiti for their model Power ApN. Tried many points to resolve. The issue was phone used to show connecting then dropping the connection immediately in a non stop loop. First thing I updated to the latest firmware for the router and changed network mode to "Bridge" and issue was resolved until then a new issue was randomly again the phone would not connect to the router & then would be ok again after 2 days. Frustrated I took screen shots comparing my earlier saved config file v/s the changed setting config file and narrowed it down to the point that the wireless setting Frequency Mhz was at Auto which I changed to 2452 mhz as fixed value and from thereon wifi is connected nonstop any time I want..
Hope this helps anyone who can make use of this info. Cheers!
PS - Moto help personnel would first tell users to reset to factory settings by default which is not required.
I am pretty sure a lot of these wifi problems are router related. My Atrix 2 on Lithium rom would lose wifi connection on a Netgear N300 router but when I changed it to a Asus WL 520GU using dd-wrt firmware, the wifi problem was gone. However I have noticed after flashing the deodexed international Indian rom, wifi is good with both routers, so I would give the Indian rom a try if you have wifi problems.

I am using an Asian MB865 unrooted and I posted only for info for anybody using the Ubiquiti POwer ApN router to illustrate how I sorted the issue. Appreciate your input though.
make sure ur router is using Channel 1-11.. as A2 can only detect channel 1-11... Happened to me twice when my router auto use channel 12 which my A2 could not detect my network at all...
Just a heads up....
but if you are running Wireless N on your router/AP.....
make sure your Channel Frequency is set to 20MHz only... not 20/40MHz .. this causes channel banding and many routers and devices do not properly support this due to lack of strong standards for its use.
Change said setting and reboot router (especially if it doesn't ask to be rebooted)
Also, always make sure to update to the newest firmware for your router... companies like Engenius and Cisco/Linksys patch many issues as they crop up and many times it will patch a problem you have.
Refer to the following article for questions on 20/40MHz banding....

Hello everybody, this is my first post here but I have been reading the ViperS threads in the development forum since version 2. Awesome rom, I really like it.
However, I have encountered an issue with ViperS 5.1.0 . I would like someone else confirm if this is happening on his sensation too (with ViperS 5.1.0), because its a very annoying bug, and a potential security flaw.
A few days ago I installed ViperS 5.1.0 (from full wipe and no restoring of backups, clean install), and shortly afterwards I noticed that my home computers in my LAN (ethernet and wifi), where having some kind of little micro-cuts in communication with the internet, especially noticeable with google and youtube autocomplete feature and things like that. The communication completely stops for a few seconds, then resumes and works perfectly until a couple of minutes (sometimes less), and it happens again.
I checked my network with a packet sniffer, and found the culprit to be the Sensation. This is what happens:
I have wifi set to always active on the phone and, when the phone is left suspended with screen off, after a little while it begins to send bogus ARP protocol broadcast packets announcing that it has a random (and incorrect) IP associated to his wlan mac. It repeats it again with several other random IPs over time, and sometimes it also says via ARP that it has the same IP as my home router. In that case, it causes all computers and devices on the network, to try to access the internet via the Sensation's wlan card mac, which obviously fails, causing the micro-cuts. After a few seconds, the router sends the correct ARP information and the computers can access the internet again. This is very similar to an ARP spoof attack, but I can't see why the phone is doing it.
It's only happening with ViperS 5.1.0. I have tried disabling ad away and also tried to connect with a fixed IP instead of DHCP, but it keeps happening.
I have attached a screenshot to show the problem.
PD: On other subject, the wifi is buggy when changing access points in the same WLAN (I have 2 APs at home), it turns off, activates mobile data, and then turns wifi on again, taking a long while to do it. In ViperS 3, it just went from one access point to the other without disconnecting. This is a secondary thing, I can live with it, but I thought I should say it just in case it's a easy thing to solve for the devs.
Thanks for your time! I really appreciate your work. :good:
I have been trying to do a packet capture in the phone, and tried to find something in the logs, but I can't see anything. Could this be related to the wifi drivers? Since ARP protocol is in link layer, I can't think of anything else.
Also the other day I connected to a wifi network in other place, and it completely crashed the router, no one else could connect.
@ivicask , I would really appreciate it if you can have a look at this. Because of it, at the moment I'm using mobile data only even at home, and I'm going to use it up pretty quickly
Thanks in advance :good:

I have been using ViperS for a while, and I it certainly isn't ARP poisoning the network.
Try setting a static IP (set it to that alloted by your DHCP) and see if the issue persists.
Happy to help.

That's the first thing I tried, it didn't help.
I have googled it and seems there are some problems with the ARP offload feature in the wifi chip drivers, and several phones have suffered it, the nexus 4 and some HTC devices. A lot of people have reported it in the google code forums.
The thing is that it didn't happen to me in previous ViperS 5.0.0, so something must have been changed in the rom that it's causing it. Do you know where I could look? Maybe it's just something wrong in a config file and can be easily solved.

ok im posting it now, can you get a logcat to supply to the devs please?
Yes i saw this, but as only person with this problem, i didint investigate. There can be many reasons this is happening to you, but most likely its problem in your own network/routers. My suggestion is first try updating your routers firmware, if there isnt new firmware, just try resting them to factory default and re configure them. I have actual experience with this, my DIR-655 couldn't connect in wifi N mode until i reseted it.
Also HTC ONE users had problems with Dir -655 where it would reboot if HTC one would connect to it (Firmware issue).
Also from your pics i see "duplicate use of 192.168.1.1", are you running 2 routers on same network with same ip address??Than this is the reason of your problems, you cant have 2 devices with same IP in same network, even worse will happen if those 2 devices are actual routers, or even worse if both of them are running DHCP.So re-check your network, make sure only 1 DHCP is running, and there are no devices with same fixed IP address.
Also here are to 2 tests for phone with different wifi supplicant versions, try them ONLY after you make sure your network is fine.

EDIT:About wifi switching, same thing happens on my ONEX+ ...

Thanks for your answer. The "duplicate use of 192.168.1.1" is exactly the problem, I know that (I am a telecomms tech, I know how this works )
The matter is that the device that is claiming to have the same IP as the router... is the Sensation! See the "source" column in the pic.
I have only one router. Everything is properly configured in the network, the issue only appears when the sensation is connected to wifi AND with screen off. Then it starts sending the false random ARP packets.
Apart from the "router impostor" packets, there is also the problem that over time the other random packets will fill up the ARP tables in the router memory, causing it to hang, although this hasnĀ“t yet happened to me.
In the threads I saw in the google code forums, people reported the same thing for the nexus 4 and several newer HTC devices with the same broadcom chip, (which also caused notification delays) and said that it disappears when disabling "wifi optimization" (with the rise in battery drain that it implies) , which looks like a bug somewhere in the wifi drivers. Unfortunately, disabling that option does not change anything for me.
This has started happening in 5.1.0. Never had such a problem before.
Thanks for the files, I will try them and report results.
Except for this and a weird bug with h/w accelerated videos screen corruption when free memory less than ~90 mb, the ROM is absolutely awesome :good: . It feels much faster and lighter than previous versions. You devs are doing a very good job :good:. HTC should hire you!
OK, problem solved. The test2 file solved it.
With test 1, it stopped sending random IPs in the ARP packets, but instead claimed to have 0.0.0.0 always, and not the correct IP. Also, it couldn't see channel 13 which I'm using on one of my access points (probably region was set to USA in this file).
With test 2, the ARP packets report the correct assigned IP (via DHCP and fixed), it can see all the wifi channels, and everything works perfect. It also appears to be changing from one AP to the other without disconnecting the wifi. This is the correct way it should work.
Still don't know the need to send the ARP info each 15 seconds , but at least now it's correct and there are no problems.
Thank you very much for your help @ivicask , I have seen that the wpa supplicant in the files you posted has an older date, is it just an older version or have you changed something in them also?
Will you include this fix in the next version of ViperS?
Thanks again :good:
Same for me. Killed my router. Especially if downloading at high speed. My router went upp and down. Now I have on other phone and my senny runs stock. No problems att all.
Flashed Viper to check 3min then router died. (it reboots)
Thanks
I couldnt neither write in the original post. By the way, i have the same problem with my wifi conection.
Now i solved it with Test2.zip. I have european wifi too and my router see fine now.
Thanks a lot for this rom and the help.
I didn't notice any particular issues with my WiFi, but I was having the disconnecting behaviour when switching between APs.
The Test2.zip solved this.
More, I tested the received power with Netgear Wifi Analyzer in an already tested place in my home. After applying the Test2.zip it looks like I gained ~10dBm. Maybe it's just something casual, but I wanted to report.
Last. The wpasupplicant file in the Test2.zip has the same modification time as the one in ViperSC2_3.1.4, so I think it has been taken from there
Good job anyway :good:
Hi,
I'm on 11-20140804-SNAPSHOT-M9-ville, official (HBoot 2.15), Radio 1.35a.32.45.27
I have a strange problem with my WiFi. I can't really tell what details are important, so I'm gonna give you guys the full story.
After rebooting, everything works fine and the phone instantly connects to my WPA2 PSK secured WiFi at home. When I'm at university during the day, I'm connected to another WPA2 WiFi (maybe some of you have heard about "eduroam", TTLS/PAP authentification), which also works fine. However, when I get home in the evening, my phone won't connect to my personal WiFi at home any more. I see the SSID, but when I try to connect, it says "Connecting..." for a milisecond, then just jumps back to showing me it's a WPA2 secured WiFi without having done anything. I get no error message or anything, it just doesn't connect and doesn't even seem to really try to connect.
When I reboot the phone it instantly works again without a problem.
Any ideas? Are there error logs for failed WiFi connection attempts anywhere for further analysing the problem? Any hint is appreciated!

Hi,
I had exactly the same problems with m8. I have a Virgin Superhub 2 at home which broadcasts on 2.4 and 5 Ghz. After disabling one of these frequencies, the behaviour briefly changed. Then went back to not working. With eduroam all worked nicely.
I read somewhere that I should activate the "Scan always available" setting. Sadly, I didn't get a chance to try that because I was so fed up with
- the significantly lower sound on CM (is that something you experience with radio 1.35a?)
- mobile signal drops
that I wen back to Maximus 10 where I have no problems at all.
I had radio 1.15 and 2.15 HBOOT when I had those problems. Now I'm on also 1.35 with Maximus 10 and problem free but would like to return to CM if the low sound problem and the WiFi problem could be sorted out.
Here's an interesting little detail I noticed: When I stand right next to my router (full WiFi signal strength) and click on my WiFi and choose connect, the signal strength drops down to one bar immediately. Also, the eduroam network changes from "not in range" to "disabled".
Playing around with the WiFi options didn't help.
edit:
What exactly do you mean by lower sound? That the phone's maximum sound volume is lower than normal? That's something I experienced on my old htc desire, but not with my htc one s. Also mobile signal seems to be stable, no signal drops. The only thing I found curious is that with activated mobile internet, it often changes between 3G, H and H+, but judging from google search results that seems to be normal or not connected to the custom rom.
went through the CM bugtracker, apparently it's a known issue without a solution
https://jira.cyanogenmod.org/browse/CYAN-3923 if you want to know more
One last question, maybe someone here can answer it: As far as I understand the issue, it's a problem with an old WiFi driver and the corresponding kernel modules.
Wouldn't this issue then be present in all ROMs which don't use the stock kernel? Or did I misunderstand something?

Same problem here with Miuri. Tries to connect and then gives up.
The problem has been resolved by the CM11 devs. I'm running nightly 20140819 and it's working fine now for me. :good:
