Ok guys, it was a good run... a week run. I don't mind this tablet, I tried TNT 2.2 and ZPAD. I liked them both, TNT a little more.
-This tablet has AMAZING potential, and awesome hardware such as the processor. Software out of the BOX is again like everyone says: HORRIBLE.
Overall build quality is pretty good, not considering the little creeks you get holding the center of the back.
-The official thing that ticked me off to return this tablet was.....wait for it............ LCD Display and viewing angles. Im sorry but it seems like its from the Early 2000's not a display we would see in many electronics Now a days.
-Another deciding factor for me is the touch sensitivity, didn't do it for me. Not as sensitive as I would like.
-Non-illuminated keys, hard to use at night, keys get pressed easily at night.
So after thinking if i should wait for iPAD2, since the rumors are racing; or get Galaxy Tab,
Ive decided to get the Galaxy Tab - I got a brand NEW Galaxy Tab(Sprint) on Ebay for $500 - White backing, Sealed BRAND NEW In BOX. No contract.
I'll be turning the Data OFF and using it as WiFi only, It wont be linked to Sprint, I will NOT activate the 3g.
I got to check the device out, and its extremely portable, its nice. 7 Inch isnt THAT bad at all.
Any comments?
Sorry to see you go. Enjoy your new tablet!
I see these goodbye posts all the time in all the forums I've been a part of. And "sorry" is almost in each post?At the end you just need to be happy with your product. Personally I am not replacing this tablet for anything that's out right now because of the dual core tegra 2 processor. My next tablet is going to be another T2 but definitely a better screen and hopefully a gig of RAM. I don't care if its a 10 or 7 inch tablet because both are practically the same in reference to portability since I can't fit them in my pocket.
Honestly, the only goodbye post that I am looking out for is Roebeets, Rothnic, Bekit, or any other devs. But I figured i'd chime in because I don't think anyone should be sorry for moving on to a different device....unless you were getting a cruz tablet then it would be flame city for you. Jk
I'm sure you'll enjoy ur galaxy tab because its a nice device.
Not gonna disagree with any of your complaints, and if it is not right for you, then get the one you want.
Personally I don't mind the screen, since it is only for me, and I just hold it at the right angle. The non-illuminated buttons are a bit of a silly oversight (and I would much prefer real buttons to those capacitive ones) but I don't mind so much since it has on-screen soft-buttons.
I like it because it is well powered (battery and processor), inexpensive, and has a large display.
Most importantly is that it is easily modifiable. If it wasn't it would have gone right back. It nearly did anyway because I was falsely told by Sears' website that it was a viewpad 10. Since roebeet, rothnic, omiji (? sorry can't remember), and all the others I cannot name have made this device software so good I see awesome potential beyond the great tablet it has already become.
So VS owes XDA and it's senior modders a lot since without them probably all of us would have returned the POS that VS put on the shelves.
In summation Thank You to the XDA team working on the G tab, and if anyone else is thinking about returning this product consider this before you do so, because Samsung, Apple, or any other manufacturer will not give the type of updates and support you can get here from an open device like this, from a place like XDA.
And to the OP, I hope you enjoy your Galaxy better, I have a Captivate and I like it. I am sure if you want a good experience out of the box like what I have in my Captivate, you will be very happy with it.

I could not of said it better myself.
The notionink adam goes on preorder later today also for $400-500. I'd suggest looking into that tablet also.

Shouldn't be too bad, and at the price that Samsung is hawking these for they should support it for a while and better than any other currently shipping Android tablet.
7": yeah, I'm missing that form factor ALOT myself, but I just can't bring myself to give up Tegra2 for something lesser even for a better(IMNHO) form factor(7") nor a better screen(awful gTab viewing angles).
I'm keeping my gTab(actually I'm stuck now anyways past my 14d Staples return) and evaluating 7" complementary(to gTab) tablets, of which(ATM) Nook Color is looking nice w/IPS screen and a8 CPU plus now rooted. Just need to get over to a B&N and try out a demo unit... (want to see how overall system and browser fare speedwise @800MHz on an a8...)
Might just wait out until next year and see if anyone coughs up a 7" Tegra2 or one of the other SoC companies cough up their dual core a9 SoCs and they get in a 7"...
Notion Ink: They sound nice, but since they're a new/small tablet only company I'm waiting to see if they survive to release their 2nd tablet, hopefully Tegra3 based...
OP should avoid the 101 then, since mega gimped device.
Probably best to wait until March. There should be 2.3 or higher Tegra 2 tablets all over the place by then.
Maybe a very stable out of box 2.3 Gtablet by then too..... Maybe at least.

$375 only!
http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/09/notion-ink-adam-pre-order-to-begin-today-pricing-starts-at-375/
I have been refreshing the NI site for days ready to buy Adam but when I got up to bat I couldn't pull the trigger.
$375 is with a standard LCD - not PixelQI. PQ is $499 w/ Wifi or $550 w/ 3G
Shipping is $50 - the thing comes straight from factory in India.
However, a few things made me hesitate on the device I have waited a year on.
- you must also pay 'customs' but nothing states what this fee is
- shipping is $50 through DHL which is not insured
- ccavenue is processing orders and they do not take MC
- you are billed in full as soon as you place order while estimated ship date is 6-8
- given no further manufacturing delays and that shipping is quick 6-8 weeks is a long wait
- specs list "8+ GB Flash"...so is that 8GB or what?
- crazy amount of return conditions the least of which is getting RMA 7 no later than 7 days after shipment (probably take longer than that for DHL to get it to you) and a 20% restocking fee for 'open' items (that's $100 + return shipping)
- no mention of 'bad pixel' policy
So while I am in love with this thing and will be so jealous for those brave enough to order site unseen (not even a hands on or real photo on website) I am just not that brave.
Now the question is....do I open my gTablet and play with it until round 2 or do I look at something maybe a little bit pricier but with a better display?

For those that are wanting but not ordered an Adam - the Pixel QI versions are already sold out. All they have left now is the LCD version.
Since I couldn't pull the trigger on the Adam I guess the only thing standing between me unboxing my g tablet is questions of the viewing angles. Since my wife picked this up from the store I have not seen it in person. Is it really a deal breaker? What is Office Depot return policy on open products - I know during the holidays returns are extended until Jan 8 but not sure if that mean sealed in the box or not? I imagine I could just go and return it Dec 26 if it is that bad....stores are usually so crazy that day they ask few questions about returns.
Oh, and about Notion Ink. They updated their blog explaining some of the conditions (such as $50 shipping) and it is a little more comforting. I never doubted they were a good, honest company. I think my issue is that they are biting off more than they can chew.
Building a fantastic product in a lab is one thing - seeing a new product introduction through the entire manufacturing process is something completely different and that is where I am not sure of NI's experience. While the prospect of waiting sux, I think I am more comfortable doing so than jumping in on the first run.
It is not a question of NI taking care of me if there is an issues, it is a question of when. I am still jealous of all those who did place the order and will kick myself the day everyone starts posting their unboxing videos :-(

Office Depot will give you a return gift ticket for Jan 8th (they did for me). Since Flash and the acceleromter have issues out of box, Office Depot should allow return and no restock or forced store credit (they do this for opened electronics). The store manager wrote on my receipt "Full return allowed", since he was aware of the issues.

For personal viewing/usage I don't really find it to be that noticeable except when I rotate the tablet specifically to look at this and was simultaneously checking for backlight bleed(had bad bleed on GT & WPDN).
Sorry, but there's a problem with a company that immediately charges for an order when they KNOW it will not be shipping for a while. They're SUPPOSED to NOT charge UNTIL the item is shipped or about to be shipped. So this tells me that they're tight on money ATM...
I work at staples and found out today that the G Tablet is being recalled for unspecified reasons. I'm extremely mad as I was hoping to get one for christmas at 279.99. All I can hope for is that this recall makes more of them available on the market at the refurbished price. I'll be sure to update this if I find out if this effects more then just Staples, but I would assume that is the case.

Get it from Sears at the same price.... While they have it. It is the best value for your money on a tablet today... Not because of Viewsonic but because Roebeet's efforts to make it usable.

Yeah, the hw is great, but the stock fw is barely beta quality if not alpha quality. Lots of "force close"s with stock fw.
I actually ended up buying mine at Staples on 11/22, and was surprised to hear of the recall. I only went back on my last day to return it when I had decided to keep it to get a price match to Sears' $379 price... just kicking myself though for not waiting another week and buying at Sears then getting the price match there last weekend to $349... oh well, still best hw of any tablet available ATM with several custom fw options.
(Stock fw was totally awful excepting for the fact that it just wasn't ready to ship, and who knows I might even go back to it someday if they stabilize it and add in more features, e.g. mass storage support, better uSD card mounting scheme, better bluetooth support, stock flash support, etc. probably just dreaming but... kernel source would be even better, as that'd hopefully give the possibility to roll your own version of Android... which is what really got me interested in tablets in the first place, and the gTablet also happens to be the most hackable ATM with several recovery options...)
I tried all the FWs and also returned mine to Staples on the last possible, 14th day at the end of November. When they asked me for a reason I just said "it's a piece of defective crap".
Besides the sh1tty software, I hated the way the screen looked with all those smudges and fingerprints.
This whole endeavor helped me understand why Galaxy Tab is $200 more, and why it is worth it (imho).
I wish these low grade manufacturers did not embarrass Android with their craptablets.
yes it seems that my local staples pulled the G-Tablet as well. They said on the sign that it was due to a manufacturing defect. This is too bad, but I am glad that I bought mine online when I did.

Nothing very humble about your comments, so the imho is quite ironic.... Are you a politician?
That said, returned mine too, late November and got another for a five week return extension. Gtablet rocks now.
Galaxy is marred by a MUCH slower chipset, not as easy to mod, no USB host and a proprietary connection for data. Hardly seems worth $200 extra, IMHO

Could the argument be made that if the firmware was better you would have kept it?. We all should know by now no UI will be perfect because froyo isnt tablet ready..not even on the galaxy tab..I mean screen smudges is not a deal breaker for me where as I guess spending $600+ dollars (or $400 and signing away 2 years of my life) I think I would value a lot more to me. I don't want to wait for a Notion Ink (which will cost you as much when they get done adding them goodies), or Archos(in-stock?) right now. I would rather hack a G Tab, and keep my two hundred.

Also, there're articles recently saying that Samsung is thinking of doing something to prevent rooting...
It seems to me that any tablet is going to have a smudge-able screen, so that's a non-issue to me.
As for the Galaxy tab. I don't want to pay for a cellular service for the device. I keep hoping that Google will relent on the requirement for the cellular connection for Market access.

Moot, since I think the OP may have been a drive-by poster. A little pseudo-humbleness, diss the product and off they go to a Galaxy, which will make them even less happy. Ironic.
I got this at Staples.ca, Asus now bundles the Tf and dock in one box, and sell it $50 cheaper ($499 for 16GB with dock). This is regular price, not a promotion. I am pissed!!
Asus - Is this how you reward your loyal early adopter customers? I feel that we (those that bought the dock and Tf together earlier) should get a $50 refund!!!
I don't agree that you should receive a $50 refund because, as you said, you chose to be an early adopter thereby wanting a device and its accompanying accessories right off the bat and you pay a premium for that. Unfortunately we weren't able to see the future and this bundle.
That said I still think you should contact Asus and ask them to send you a refund check, the worst they can do is say no. Let them know you have receipts/invoices to prove the cost of your device.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
I'd like $50 back too! Buy me a microsd card..
No, $50 is not worth my time to be put on hold talking to CSRs. My point is, it shows the kind of company Asus is.
When Apple decided to give out free iPhone cases, first thing they made sure was announcing how you can get a refund if you bought one already.
I shouldn't even have to ask for my $50. I will return the favor to Asus by never buy any of their products, because the post-sale happiness of their customers is obviously not important.
By the way, I won't be surprised if they never fix the battery drain of the dock either. if it's anything like the way they pump out netbooks, they'll probably discontine the current Tf in 2 months (for Tf2 or something).

wow negative nancy.
You seem to want everything handed to you. That's not how companies work you know. Apple did so only because they're apple and can afford it, not to mention not doing so would seriously jeopardize their name. More of an exception to the rule. Battery drain is not nearly as serious as the Iphone Grip-o-death.

Yes, my post was negative. Didn't I already said I was pissed! I just bought the damn thing 16 days ago.
Early adopters always pay dearly. It's the cost of first bragging rights. Remember all those suckers who paid $5000 for a 40-inch plasma TV?

You saw the prices at the time and chose to pay them. /thread
Yes, there is something called a receipt, and it lists the items, date and price that you paid for.
No, I don't expect anything from Asus anymore.

Not nu this is my second account. Asus is great and getting better. You said your future money was going to Apple so, by all means.
I really look to Acer and Asus to be inovative leaders in a mobile interactive computing world to come. Enjoy your "new" notifications bar.
Yeah, the other posters are right.
There are many issues on which to pick a bone with Asus, this is not one of them. You saw the prices and you got the items early.
It's a known fact that early adopting will cost you. Everything becomes cheaper. Blu-Ray drives were $300.00 when they first came out. Half a year ago I saw an ad for a Samsung CD/DVD/Blu-Ray combo drive for $50.00.
Go Buy Your iPad, please.

You got ripped off because you "lost" $50? Wow.
Please go to Apple, I heard they're looking for some more zombies...er...."owners".
In regards to Apple offering a free case;
1) it was to resolve a glaring issue in that the phone partially lost it's capabilities of being a phone by dropping calls with the Antenna issue. Although the transformer has had it's own issues they have been dealt with in the same manner as Apple and many other large electronics manufactures and that it is to resolve the issues in house and release newer and newer batches that have the kinks worked out.
2) Those cases probably probably cost Apple, maybe, a few bucks to make. The loss wasn't that great and, although offered to the entire customer base, not every iPhone owner claimed one. So the out of pocket expense, although admittedly large, wasn't so much that Apple couldn't afford to resolve it. If Asus refunded $50 to every TF owner they would be losing money big time as the TF is already barely sold above cost because they figured the dock would bring the money.
Finally, please close this thread. The information is irrelevant and does nothing to add to the TF general forum. And this is going off-topic way to fast.
I'm not pissed by this. I was surprised when I was shopping for the damn Transformer as I could not find a bundle. But, I love them dearly and was a good $550.
I would like to own the dock, but will never buy it for more than $99, based on the bundle's price. Like others said, the bundle wasn't available when I snagged the TF either.
If everyone refrains from buying one for any more than $99, maybe we'll see a price drop sooner than later.
I have had a few asus devices. All have been stellar, only problem was my refurbished EEE 901 came with bad charger and battery. Called asus to replacement, I had to complain to get shipping waived, but got a brand new battery and charger in less than a week. I have to say that refurbished 901 is still in use today 2 years later and may have been the best $169 I ever spent.
All that said, I am disappointed in the TF. There I said it. For me the problem with the dock battery drain plus poor BMS making it so you can't leave it plugged in.
If I can't leave it at my desk plugged how can you call it a "dock"
I have to charge dock and tablet separately, and then leave them so until I want/need the keyboard or sacrifice 4-5% hr drain while off or in sleep. BTW I sent email to asus complaining about dock battery draining 2 weeks ago and have not received a response....
Edit:For $399 Tablet is way solid. But yeah the dock has issues....clearly not worth >$50 in my mind yet
You guys do realize that you only paid $400 for a device that Asus could have easily charged you 500 600 or even 700 for...

So I've been planning to purchase a transformer prime TF-201 for a while, and I was going to purchase it within the next few weeks. Now I'm finding information on this TF-700, whatever it is, but not enough to understand if it's a replacement or an upgrade or what?
Does anyone know about it?
Any details helpful
Cheers!

Basically it is a Transformer Prime that will have a higher resolution screen, 3G/LTE in some models and a slightly higher price tag. It also has a partially plastic back panel which should improve GPS and WiFi performance.
Is it worth waiting for? I'm a student, any information on the price range yet?

It will also have gorilla glass 2 on it. Price range being thrown around is $599 for 32gb and $699 for 64gb.
The processor is supposed to be a little faster and a higher resolution front facinf camera. It may not get as long of life for the battery, but the higher resolution, improved glass and hopefully better GPS and WIFI are a go for me.
I liked everything about my Prime except it seemed like the glass wasn't up to snuff, mine scratched while docked and also started micro cracking along the black bezel. So I sent it back waiting on this now.

not till end of June or july. Price, supposedly starts at $599 for 32gb wifi model. lte model much more expensive. Likely $699+data plan.
Prime is more than worth getting now. its the better deal.
I don't see the need for that high resulotion on a 10,1 tablet. The battery life will probably get worse unless they put in a bigger one. That's what apple had to do with the new lolpad anyway
I do however see the point of the plastic cover making wifi and gps better. I don't have any wifi issues myself on my "c2" prime but gps is not that good. But i don't use it anyway. Got gps built into my car and if i'm on foot looking for something i just use my phone

Depends on when you need a tablet, and if you need a higher resolution screen or 3g/LTE.
If you need/want a tablet right now, the Transformer Prime is excellent. If you don't it might be worth waiting for. The WiFi model is allegedly going to start off at $599 for the 32GB model, which would make the 64GB model priced at around $699.
The 3G/LTE models will probably start off at $699 for the 32GB model and go up from there. There is no solid info on what networks the 3G/LTE models will be compatible with and if they are carrier exclusive that will affect the price.
The TF Infinity is rated at 9 hours of battery life, instead of the 10 that the Prime is rated for. Also it will be pushing more pixels with only a slightly updates processor so performance wise it might be a little bit slower (WiFi model, anyway).
If Price is an issue, Asus is also releasing the Transformer Pad 300 which is nearly identical to the Prime, however it loses the Super IPS screen capability (its less bright at maximum screen brightness) and comes with only 16GB of internal storage. It also comes in brighter colors (red, blue & white) has a plastic back (which will improve WiFi and GPS) and a price tag expected to start at $399.
Nobody mentioned it is also a different proccesor.
It runs a 2 core snapdragon (if I remember right).
That brings up other issues.
I know the difference between 2 cores at "x" speed can be as fast or faster than 4 cores at "x" speed IF the code is written to take advantage of it. Remember that the 5 core Nvidia Tegra platform has a lot of support so I am hesitant to say this new one will be as fast.

Supposedly wifi models still have Tegra3 while it's the lte models that have the s4
Where din you get the info about it being launched only in June-July? I am currently looking around for a tablet and I am oscillating between the TF201, the iPad3 and the TF700T and I would go for the latter but only if I can buy it around May...
You have to guarantee that the TF-700 is really going to be released in June/July. If I remember correctly the TF-201 was supposed to be released in November, but it wasn't really available in the UK until February. If this happens again, you might have to wait until September/October for the new tablet.

There is no gurantee, most are just guessing based on various info from various tech news site.

The rumors indicated that the TF700T will be launched in the June/July time frame. However there has been no official word from Asus on the matter, and even if they are "released" in June/July they might be in very short supply for several months after that.
The TF Prime was technically released in November, but most retailers are just now starting to get a steady stock of them.

in Portugal, same thing. only in February they started to be at stores.
Thanks for all the info guys.
To be honest I'm having trouble finding a prime in the UK anyway. I mean I'm in London and I can't even find a store with a bloody display model so I can play with it before I actually buy it. I can find it online without a problem usually but every bloody shop that sells the prime out here only has online delivery. Does anyone know of any shops in London who hold stock in-store so I can use one?
Cheers.
only if you have a Gamestop store that carries tablets. possibly Bestbuy should have them. maybe an office depot.

I definitely second that thought. Prime is the undisputed king of tablets right now and by the time TF700 comes out, the competition will be much tougher (other Tegra3 tablets or windows tablets). There are a lot of uncertainties coming with the TF700 also. No guarantee on the exact launch date, and like everybody mentioned, Asus is quite inacurate when it comes to precise dates. No guarantee that the battery life will be as awesome. No guarantee that the plastic cover will totally erase the issues with GPS and Wifi performance.

Joncy...your best bet is to pop into a currys as they have them on display when theyu have stock and they should be ablt to check on their systems to see which shops have them in stock. PC World (same group) can also do the same, but for some reason the staff do not seem as interested or as helpful as the currys staff!!
I don't know if carphone warehouse shops have any on display in their shops but if there is one locally it might be worth a punt!!
The other option is to get one from ebuyer or Amazon and use the 7 days distance selling regs to try out the TFP...the trouble with this option is that it will cost you 500 sovs for the pleasure and given that amount of testing time you might be more tempted to keep it once you have played with it.
Remember there are far more happy punters out there than unhappy ones.
One little tip is that when booting for the first time you might think that there is light bleed (I did) but once it is fired up and displaying whatever, this is nowhere near so visible.
Good luck
Andy

I would suggest you wait for the 700. The 700 is going to replace the Prime no matter what other people tell you. For $100 more you are getting a higher res screen, option of LTE for another 100, and wifi and gps that actually function. If it weren't for Prime owners complaining, ASUS would've slipped the Prime under the rug like it never happened. There is no reason for ASUS to have so many lines of products with such minor differences.
Also, because of the aluminum backing, the Prime has significantly crippled wifi range. The range is weaker than my 3 year old Sony x10 phone. So if your University is like mine in which the wifi isn't the greatest everywhere on campus then that might become a problem.

For students, I would think the TF300 might be more probably price range.
Why is there so much hate towards the Nvidia Shield ? I went to gamestop and see if they have any accessories and the rep replied, why would want to buy accessories ? The Shield is a piece of crap. It's not just the rep but other people have said the same thing. I bought my Shield two days ago and love it.

It does have issue. Wait till the flex cables starts getting bad in another few months. The you can only use it while connected to HDMI. The flex cable is part of the LCD. So when the parts do become available they will be pricey.
So i bought a device for $200 just so it doesn't work in a few months ?

Some have been lucky and have not seen the issue. But others like myself, not so..
Here is a thread on the issue.

And another as well.

You might be one of the lucky ones. Seems to be split about 30% bad and 70% ok.
Why so much hate towards the iPhone when it first got out? Because it is a new, largely misunderstood product and those who call it crap typically never touched it.
The relevant thing about the SHIELD is that the vast majority of its owners seem to love it. The opinion of uninformed people doesn't matter.
Think also that Gamestop might not be very happy at the idea of a device for which you cannot come and buy games at their stores.

How do you come with that estimate?
If you have a problem with the flexi-cable, this is clearly a hardware defect and you should have your unit RMA'd. The feedback on NVIDIA's service has been very good so far.

Did you not even read any of the post I quoted? Based on the ones saying they have issue and the ones saying they do not it is about the split that I said it was. Also if you had read any of the post you would have seen that I bought the unit on Ebay under the impression it had a power problem which would be an easy fix. it however is not a power problem but a flex cable issue.
So since I bought used on ebay for 40 bucks, sending it in for repair or RMA is not an option. I will just wait till parts become available. Or throw it away and count a 40 dollar lose. No big deal for me unlike those who did spend 200+ on it.

Well I have read the posts and my answer was not specifically targeted at you, but first and foremost to the people who spent 200+ on it and specifically to the OP who was worried his unit could stop working after a few months.
It is possible that your unit is a pre-production one that was handed to developers. These are known to be of lesser build quality and had flexi-cable issues. The production units I own since launch do not show this issue so far and I am a quite heavy user.
Just wanted to point out that your estimate of failing units is anything but reliable, so hopefully people won't start making ideas based on it.
What's about those from Europe who get the white screen of death and try to RMA it, will Nvidia accept and repair it on warrenty?
I'd also have to go with the whole "The only people who hate on it are the ones who have never touched it" reason. I bought my Shield to replace my PSP and my HP Touchpad as an emulation/Android gaming device ~couple months ago and I've yet to regret the purchase. The main reason I didn't buy it when it was announced was because I thought the price was a bit too steep, but now that it's (still) $200 I think it's definitely worth it.

As long as you have proof of purchase from the US or Canada then they must honor the warranty regardless of where you live. What they will do is stick you with shipping cost most likely both ways.
I unfortunately do not.
I bought it off a german seller, but maybe I can ask there.
