[Kernel][KG2][Port]Baliv1.2 for KG2 Update Voodoo Lagfix + Sound [8/6/11]

I came to understand that Dr. Honk's original version of Bali was not working on the new update to the SK4G, so I took a break from my Lockscreen project and ported our kernel up to the new update. This is the same Bali kernel, but for KG2, rather than the old KD1.
THIS WILL ONLY WORK ON KG2, NOT KD1

This is a flashable zip, so just place it on your sdcard and reboot into clockwork, and flash the zip.

Changes in V1.1: Edited default.prop to enable root user in ADB, checked for init.d
Changes in V1.2: Found my failure, readded link to voodoo scripts in init.rc, and readded init.d support.
This has been tested by myself and ayoteddy, if there are issues, let me know and I'll work on getting it fixed for you whenever I get a chance.

I just flashed this zip and now the phone is stuck at the Samsung boot screen with one long vibrate and two short. I think I may have to Odin to get out of this state.

yeah i would odin! and reflash gingerclone then bali and see what happens

This won't work on gingerclone or maximusx that's kg1 this is for the new kg2 update stock

Thanks a bunch for making this work. I'm still running the stock ROM and this has made it a lot nicer to use. Even Firefox loads quickly now.

i flashed this on my stock kg2, said the install was successful. looked at About Phone, Kernel version is 2.6.32.9....is that correct?

Sduvick did not change the kernel name when he was compiling it , it's Bali-V2.2 though .

You don't need to check mounts for a kernel install, that won't make a difference.

it goes though the lady saying stuff and the last thing she says is boot animation activted and i wait ten mins after that and it still stayed on slash screen. when i take battery out and try to reboot it says system unavailable, so i had to odin.

What rom are you using?

Forgive me if this is covered elsewhere. I just read this CNet article about the leaked GB release. I am thinking about downloading it. Is this the one that people are having issues rooting with? If so, can someone provide me step by step instructions for this fix without changing kernel?
I have flashed ROM before. I follow instructions well, but I don't always follow exactly what is being discussed in the threads unless there are clear instructions. Perhaps I missed some that already exist?

To root you'd need to:
Flash that release
Flash one of the custom Gingerbread kernels - note that this will break wifi and HDMI temporarily
Root the system partition (actually most custom kernels will do this for you)
Flash back to the kernel from the leak

Ok, so I can just flash back to the original kernel when done? Sounds simple enough. I have flashed the rim before, but not the kernel. However I am sure I can find instructions for this. I assume the Infusion kernel would work just fine?

In theory - it's a feature I have not tested as I've always used pre-rooted /system partitions - it's one of the features that came from gtg's initramfs work back when the Rogers Infuse first dropped. It should work as I believe gtg tested it.

It is in the boot.img. So far all Infuse cm9 is based of jt or entropy branching off jt. If you want just the kernel, after you f flash the ROM, you can dump the kernel from bml 7 using dd commamd.
Jt recover ics is such a kernel. Check my thread for the heimdall packed.
Jscott also extracted entropies kernel and i packed into a heimdall 1 click also. I haven't had a chance to test it yet. Pm me if you want a shot at it.
I think having these kernel in a heimdall makes flashing and recovery from cm9 simple.
Dl mode. Flash. factory reset. And it's ready for cm9 ROM.

I've used your heimdal package of the ics kernel multiple times as I constantly brick my phone trying to port and have to go back to stock...I then flash the ics kernel and I'm back up and running ready for ics...I just wish I could only flash the kernel...always gotta go back to stock first...but with your heimdal I'm back up and running in no time

As for the kernel...as far as I know it isn't a full on ics kernel...it is a gingerbread kernel that has been heavily modified to run ics however it will not work with gingerbread any longer...
So its an ics kernel created from a gingerbread kernel...insane development going on there...got tons of respect for jt and entropy getting that done...

I don't think you need to go back to stock with system files that you will overwrite anyway.
Flash just the kernel. Wipe.
And flash the ics.
Maybe use entropy kernel flash then a jt kernel if you can't recover with only jt.

What do you mean by an entropy kernel flash then a jt? I've tried just flashing the jt one you have and no matter what rom I flash...when I hit that reboot button it will always boot back to recovery...
Anyways im back up and running in under 10 minutes...so its nothing to complain about...

I'm not sure if we're talking about the same thing but:
Let say you tried a port or build and got into a boot loop. Or lost recovery, you don't necessarily have to flash the whole stock package.
In my kernel root thread, post #3. Flash the Jt kernel in download mode. That should bring you n back to recovery from boot loop or lost recovery with the three finger combo.
I've noted that since Jt kernel has the cwm 5.xxx sometimes it doesn't do the trick. If that was the case, I would flash the entropy in download mode..post #2..in the uclb3 thread.
That will also give you cwm recovery without having to flash the whole stock base.
Boot into recovery, wipe and/or mount and you are set to flash the next experimental build. Just be sure to have a couple of different builds to test on your sdcard.
Once you flash what ever build or ROM, it had it's own kernel and system file to write over your current. In this case, it would not matter, as you are not working with a system file...only the recovery.
Edit: it would also make sense of you created a mg_lite ROM for debug if you needed to have the phone system. Make a ROM with minimal stuff. Turn off boot ani. Have only minimal apps..no email or gmail or bt fb or any crap that would allow down the boot and dalvik process. Only a few system files and libs are needed. That way you can save some time instead of going back to the whole stock process

CWM 5.0.2.8 on Valhalla Black

Any way to upgrade the CWM in Valhalla black to 5.0.2.8 without using another kernel? Right now it is on 5.0.2.7 and I would like to upgrade if possible.

There aren't any BML kernels that use 5.0.2.8 at the moment. Why do you want it.

Actually hampster kernel has cwm 5.0.2.8 (blue cwm) but some users are having issues with nand backups and going to mtd with that kernel.

Added it to my todo list. The thing is that now I really like your CM7 build.sh and am disliking the BML kernel's build.sh. I might just go ahead and do it with anton's kernel since he has a lot of patches already, or he can do it himself.
Does this thing auto-root? I don't see any references to it in your commit history.

I looked at CWM briefly, but I don't know much about our phone boot and recovery process. I don't even understand why recovery has to be build for each device individually and cannot use a single binary and some config and script files.
This is the latest source for the touch recovery:

If we can figure how to build and use it I'll include it in the kernel.

Bryan was messing around with getting a build of it going on CM7. Once touch works, it'll be a lot simpler to include it in BML kernels.

This is because the way recovery works is based on the the BoardConfig.mk and other make variables that are specific to the board (like the size of the partitions, other device features that are enabled, etc...)
You don't want to look at the ICS branch. If you want touch recovery, you need to look at the cm-7.2.0 branch... but it has a lot of weird dependencies and as I've said in this forum already... I got a handle on it. I should have something by or on this weekend.

I finally found the kernel that works for my phone with 5.0.2.8 Blue on it. Seems to work good on my phone, but not really sure where I got it from originally. Any way this helps to make the transition easier?

You can flash AntonX's 1.1.3 Kennel and get CWM 5.0.2.8 I'm running it on Valhalla Black..the blue CWM looks really nice.

Well it is Stock, untouched, except for the deodexing and zipaligned. Your kernel and radios will be updated as in the official update. The only thing I have left out is the recovery, and I can provide a flashable one later, if you really really want to be stock for any future OTA update. See the optional flash if you need busybox and su.
- DeOdexed as per my stringent process, no using Kitchen or any other nonsense. Every apk get's what it needs in the classpath.
- zipaligned.
- all ownsership and permissions exactly as in stock install.
- Untouched UXLF5 boot image (i.e kernel + ramdisk).
- Your radio/modem will be updated to UXLF3.
- [OPTIONAL] If you want to flash busybox/su see the ADD-ONS. This will effectively root your install.
- [OPTIONAL] If you want the modified boot.img that enables init.d scripts, bootanimation, insecure boot, then flash the boot.img listed in the add-ons

Pretty straight forward. The only requirement is you need CWM 5 and above (I have tested with the touch recovery). NOTE: THIS WILL WIPE DATA.
1) Backup, Nandroid preferred.
2) Download and Copy the ROM to your device. (Please make sure you check the MD5SUM, the dowload link has the correct one).
3) Copy any additional add-ons you want to your devices, internal or external sdcard.
4a) Boot into CWM recovery (remember that is the requirement).
4b) In your recovery format /system (in touch recovery it is under: "mounts and storage)
4c) wipe data and cache partition
5) Flash the ROM.
6) [OPTIONAL] If you want busybox and su (binaries only). This will ROOT your phone. Flash it now.
7) [OPTIONAL] If you WANT the modified boot.img (modified ramdisk + stock kernel) flash that.
8) [OPTIONAL] If you want to flash a *different* radio, flash it now.
9) reboot

one question, is there a way to unroot without flashing stock
edit: im guessing that there is no stock recovery in this rom, making it a stockish firmware
edit: i answered my own question about unrooting, just delete su from /bin and /xbin directories

Yup just deleting the binaries is enough to "unroot". I may update the op with the revert script (busybox and su) and the respective stock recovery, when i get chance..

oh great, i just finished detailing a newb guide to explain a temporary unroot and permanent unroot methods, a script would of been easier to use, btw that su/bb file works like a charm on any firmware

kinda missed the touchwiz smoothness... too bad there isnt a 14 toggle compatible with this. hopefully one day soon.

Flashing the UCLF6 toggle zip worked for me.

Is there any way you could do the same for Rogers GB? It would be a great help for me. As ICS is crap I get RR and freezes. It doesn't get the right time zones and etc.

Incredible rom! Just had my skyrocket for 2 weeks, flashed 5-6 jb roms, vincoms the best imo, seanscreamz close behind.
I thought I'd come back to stock for a couple reasons. One, to get a baseline and see how good stock Rogers ics is battery wise, two, I can't seem to get nfc figured out and want to see if stock will do it. A co-worker has a stock ics sgs3, we can transfer apps, web addresses etc., but where he transferred a feature film to a different co-worker with a stock Rogers ics sgs3, via nfc in about 30 seconds, it fails with my skyrocket. I notice that their phones have sbeam in addition to nfc and android beam, maybe that's the difference. But I was wondering if there's issues transferring between ics and jb?

Sorry to double post but I thought this would be as good a place as any to post this. Went in to Rogers today to get my lte SIM card, to my surprise they didn't even charge me! I can't believe these speeds the screen shot shows the speed is double my Wi-Fi speeds at home! And look at the comparison to the 3g or H+ too, that's just sad. I'm expecting to pay for it battery wise but I can live with that for these speeds!
