[Q] ICS Roms and Sensation XE - HTC Sensation

Hello all,
I have a few quick questions to ask. I had recently "test-drived" the Sensation XE and found it to be a really good phone for me, therefore I will be purchasing it very soon. Although, I really dislike the ROM and Launcher as they drain battery like mad. Just wondering, currently what is the best ICS rom for the Sensation (XE) and also are there any problems that may occur when it comes to actually using an ICS rom on a Sensation (as all the roms i've looked at are currently in their beta stages).
Thank you for any answers provided.

Comprehensive thread of ICS problems and fixes: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1405457
I'd probably say ARHD is the best but do have a look around and see what is best for you.

I'm having trouble deciding if I should get the XE or SGS2, what do you rekon?

Both phones are very good. My wife has SGS2, I have her tmo employee 1st ed. sensation. ( i believe 1st ed., prob same as 1st retail shipped) i digress.
The sensation is rooted and has been through the works with almost every customer rom/kernel here.
We recently switched phones for two days and I went to work on her SGS2. For me its personal preference. After 2 days with juggernaut-sgs2, I missed the sensation.
Both phones work well and both companies have updated versions of them both.
If your willing to wait a month or two I'm sure that another phone will be around to outdate both the SGS2 and Sensation.

The sensation XE uses the same roms as the Normal sensation as the screen size is the same and stuff.
I'd say the best rom is this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1408351

The best thing to do for is to try all the roms till you find one that you like.

I prefer insert coin. A lot of updates and the forum thread is more clean. Because mike(dev of android revolution hd) gives the changelog before dating up his rom, there is alot of trash to be found in his thread and a lot of double posts. But in the end its a question of your own taste. Greets

Sensation and Sensation XE Really the same?

Hi guys
since yhesterday been reading all the posts and threads regarding the sensation xe
Apart form using pyramid3d rom i felt as if the roms designed are a step lower than stock rom. I have a samsung galaxy s2 and have had many android phones so i do know abit. Even though i still found it confusing in original section.
Iv been reading reviews and emailed HTC according to the reviews and HTC the XE is hardware 1.5 and not software overclocked and from what iv been told are slightly different. Plus i noticed that the audio beats on most roms is not as good as the stock XE rom closest i got is pyramid.
Devs prob know better than all of us would realli appreciate if some of the experts who have been here for a while to clarify this once and for all.
Thanks for Reading guys.

Honestly, i'm not a dev, but as i know in hardware part original Sensation and XE one are the same. The difference is in CPU speed, but chipset is the same and in original sensation CPU speed is just underlocked with sofware to 1.2 Ghz.
Which part of this question is to do with the development of a ROM? Same rules apply to the normal Dev forum - it's for ROM threads only. Questions go in Q&A or General

[Q] Returning to The Sensation & i need A little direction?

Hello to all of you here in the Sensation forums, and let me say I couldn't be happier to be back here! I used to own a Tmo Sensation & I've been gone for a while as I dabbled in the department of the Galaxy S2 (yuck) & the HTC Amaze (great device but no Sensation). As the new devices rolled out I followed on the band wagon but I just kept finding myself missing my sensation. Though it seems to be popular belief that the GS2 is some sort of Android god, I just couldn't love it, & my Amaze was just never as practical as my Sensation due to battery life & development. So, that's my long unnecessary story, thank for listening! Lol.
Now I'm no expert but not quite a noob when it comes to rooting & flashing but its seems quite a lot has changed since I was last here, & I mostly mean the addition of the ICS firmware. I have fallen in love with ICS on my Transformer Prime & I've even almost completely replaced my net book, even being a small business owner, its just so functional for my daily tasks.
So my question is that the last time I was on the Sensation I used a guide by VipeR to get root, cwm, & s-off. Is this still the method I want to use if the ice firmware is where I'm headed, or is there a more up to date method? I'd also like to know what is the smoothest fully functional ice build/rom that the majority are using here, as I see there are a few? Also, any advice or links that anyone might have for me on any significant info or changes that have occurred since the addition of ICS would also be greatly appreciated! I have taken some time to skim through some of the areas that are new to me here, but being new to owning my own business has accounted for a lot of my free time, & family time. I don't have any problem reading & educating myself, but any direction that could be offered would be fantastic! Thank you in advance to all of you great ppl in this forum & I look forward to hanging around here, as Tmo GS2 forum I was most recently in was getting a little off putting & unfriendly.

you have to follow this guide, which is the viper one, cause it is the best method and it is explained very well!
I am using insertcoin 4.6.1 give it a try and you will never change rom
follow the same guide but install 4ext afterwards. it gives you the optian to make a choice if give by roms wich clockwork just standard says no to. 4ext.net dl recovery updater and install by that. nandroid backups are at my phone found in clockworkmod->backup because i sued cwm to at first but with ARHD 4ext can by and was my new recovery
Just curious...the consensus seems to be that ICS will be pushed to the Sensation next month already. Can't wait?
Even if you like the ROMs here (I don't blame you...I like them too! ) I would think that with the official ICS out, these devs would make their respective ROMs even more stable since it will be built on the official one.
If ICS wasn't so close to coming out or wasn't going to be available on your phone, I would definitely go for it, but being that it's so close...
Personally I'm waiting. Then once I've got the OTA, I'm rooting and looking for the ROM of my dreams. LOL!
Thank you very much for posting and honestly I have been considering that. I really want ICS as pure as possible. I had purchased the gnex but I returned it as I just didn't think it was worth the $700 I had spent. I went back with the sensation thinking this was probably much better of a chance of pure ICS than my Tmo gs2. I would have done the htc amaze but there is not as much development for it as the sensation, not to mention the battery life, and I have always loved the sensation. I have learned my lesson with samsung I will buy nothing but htc from here out. I spend the majority of my time on my aces transformer prime and have just fallen in love with this very pure form of ICS.
I used the revolutionary.io site to unlock my Sensation, worked without a problem. Installed CWM and then a few roms, settled on Darkforest as it is the most stable ICS rom I've tried. And the Sensation is definitely better than the Galaxy S2 in my opinion, such a better build quality and feel to it!

As others have said, S-OFF etc. from the VipeR thread.
The main thing to be careful of is: S-OFF before upgrading the firmware, revolutionary.io doesn't currently support 1.23/1.27 HBOOTs.
If you want an AOSP like experience have a look at Virtuous Inquisition.

I second this, I too have a transformer prime and I can't stand not having ICS. Virtious Inquisition is by far the best AOSP rom out there for the sensaiton. I've tried many others but this is the best working and fastest. ARHD is good if you like sense, but VI is best if you like pure AOSP (with a few HTC things like camera etc)

Im so happy I want to cry

I've been using Android phones for about 2 years now, and my replacement G2 broke right before the 90 warranty. I got T-Mobile to give me a sensation for free luckily. Anyways, my experience with Android has always come down to this - fun to use, but never as responsive as other mobile OS's. Even rooted, my old Moto Cliq and G2 would lag. However, I just rooted and installed Android Revolution on my Sensation, and its ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT! No lag AT ALL. I know for a lot of you this is normal, but because I am discovering this just now, it's honestly a milestone for me. I was so sure I was going to switch to WP8 once it was released, but no longer. THANK YOU SO MUCH ANDROID DEV COMMUNITY!
Welcome aboard !
Next step - ditching Sense
I disagree :L with sense 4.0 it should be a much better experience but I understand why u might want to ditch sense 3.x XD
BTW. Not starting an argument just saying

i felt exactly the way you feel now when i got my sensation, and the experience was improved even further when i switched to ICS AOSP(-style) ROMs... i really think android can compete with iOS in terms of ui responsiveness now (though i have never used an iphone 4s).
Welcome to the cool Sensation! Happy Flashing! : )
Honestly sense 4.0 has been a great experience so far. There's absolutely no lag right now. I think I will try the AOSP roms once all of the kinks are worked out.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA
thats how exactly how i felt bro
Stay where you're at or go to Sense 3.6 ICS. Sense 4.0 isn't ready yet and whatever you do, do not install Sense 3.5 - laggy as all get out.
Next step use an AOSP ROM like CM9
same here.... but i bought my g2 on ebay already kinda scuffed up almost a year ago. something happened suddenly with my g2 (semi-bricked) and showed it to tmobile and gave me a choice of a replacement phone, sensation 4g or mytouch q. are you serious??? i chose the sensation of course....
Be sure to go over to dev site and thank mike1986. He and others have done an awesome job on this ROM/firmware.

Yup. Just follow instructions here to a T, and you'll be amazed at how much better the Sensation gets from stock. Made the jump from Blackberry last August, and only did so because Android has come this far.
Good on ya!

Worth the buy???

I'm buying one for 180$
Coming from a g2x
Is it worth it????

Definitely worth the buy. Sensation is getting updated ROMs for ICS at ridiculous speeds. Have not regretted getting this over SGX2 one bit.

I really like the sensation but if you are going to buy one you will want to root it straight away and run a custom rom because HTC sense drains your battery amazingly. In terms of speed the sensation isn't at the very top but it's EXTREMELY near but it makes up with the camera which captures much better images than the Samsung galaxy s2 who's screen resolution is so badge you can count the pixels if you had the time.
Piggy-back
Since the recent mega-price-cut, the Sensation has finally fell within my meagre budget constraints.
The only think making me stop swiping my card to buy it is the mega discussions about the different issues faced - screen/unresponsiveness mainly.
After reading fixes and tweaks it seems as if most of it is fixable by rooting appropriately. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
So my question to all the Indian owners of the Sensation is:
Is it still worth the buy? Given that One S isn't coming to India anytime soon...
I have seen and handled this device at Croma and quite like the look and feel of the UI. I have no question about its functionality but only concern was such a widespread report of issues with the phone.
Some encouraging words might help... more than just 'go for it...'
Well worth it! Enjoy and happy flashing!
Thanks Galaxys!
I'm really interested to hear from people in India about its long-term stability and any issues that they might've had over the past months?
I came from the G2x as well and I gotta say I'm way more happy with my Sensation. Then again I really like Sense so that was the major factor for me but their are many others as I later found out. Great support with constant updates for ROM's, if you root, which im sure you will your on xda for god's sake!

All the issues of sensation happened ages ago believe me they got fixed by august or so.....and. the fixes are so simple that it makes you think that is that what causing me problems
Also in order to fix those issues root is not required but I strongly recommmend you to root it to get access to awesome ICS custom roms. The devolepment is blazing fast you'll see atleast 3 Rom updates every day and all of them are new features (no bugs on ics at all)
Also you have Sense4 ports which will give you one S look
As for the phone its really cheap now
For a dual core beast atleast
If you are familiar with flashing custom roms and all I strongly recommend you to flash it.
See the HTC stock Rome doesn't have complete gpu rendering so you feel a difference of touch when compared to so called overpriced iPhones but once you have custom Rom installed and couple of tweaks the UI or touch is definetely better than iPhone (my previous phone is iPhone4 which I've lost it and I can assure you this)
Also camera ...its a beast inside but caged by HTC crappy software....but recently one guy was able to break it and after that the quality of photos and videos quadrapled ( I got a camcoder which records 1080p videos and now my sensation beats it by miles)
The only downtrade to sensation is battery. the stock battery is crap .you can improve battery perf by some of custom roms but go for an extended battery.
I have anker 1900 one and I easily get 1 day battery with heavy use (5 hrs screen time and atleast 1 hr gaming) and this is cheap only 1-1.3k
Also when you have stock HTC Rom the performance is poor when compared to SGS2 but with custom Rom you can compete with SGS2 easily.
All the things need to be done for custom Rom installation is reversible (helps in case of warranty purposes) but you need to be careful while doing the steps
There are guides for every thing here in xda so please follow them step by step

Thanks SO much for that highly reassuring reply. Just the kind of mental peace I was looking for before investing my hard earned money on a phone which I've been stalking since its launch!
Was thinking twice only because of (not anymore) alarming issues.
I've never owned ANY smartphone before (let alone android) so am still noob when it comes to flashing, rooting etc. But, I learn fast and with help from xda folks, I will unleash the beast in my new purchase
Mostly will order it by tomorrow night.
From my personal experience, everything is better then Sensation on stock ROM after official ICS update .... everything, even Nokia 3210

You are definitely gonna enjoy your purchase
and when you got the phone follow these guides
1. Guide to do Basic things that are to be done for making your phone flashable with any custom rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
this guide will hep you in reversing all the changes you've done too in case of warranty purposes.
2.As you are having your first smartphone You would probably like the Sense UI
(User interface which is HTC software on top of android ) so I would suggest you to go for ARHD rom which is completely stock with tons of optimizations done on it (just see the change log )
This is guide to flash ARHD (completely noob proof )

njoy also PM me if you are facing any issues and you didn't got answers from this forum ( which is highly impossible )

Official ICS - user experiences? - possible to downgrade again?

Hi guys
Sorry for asking this question, if it has already been asked. I did try searching the forums.
My girlfriend is buying the HTC Sensation on sale in 2 hours time.
I wonder if I should make her update directly to the official ICS before beginning to set everything up in GB. We live in Denmark which AFAIK should have received official ICS.
What are your experiences with the official ICS? Is it very buggy or is it better than the stock GB on Sensation?
Is it smoother or more laggy?
Does it drain more or less battery?
It seemed to me that the first official ICS had some bugs... but can I assume that most of these have been fixed in a small update which can be run afterwards?
I know that custom roms are nicer, but I believe she would like to stay on official ROM at least for the first 3-4 months.
Also, can she downgrade to the official GB version again after updating to ICS?
Any recommendations or stories about user experiences are most welcome!
Thanks in advance
BR, Martin

You can update it to ics normally. .. its so stable more smother with better ui sence u can give it a go try to see if the update relesed from setting al>>about phone>>chech for update I think it did hit ur country. .... U can downgrade to gb any time u want by flashing back the firmware and then flash the europ version go to development section read the 3rd thread the guide of sensation it will learn u how to downgrade and debrand, ,,,or brand it again
Good luck

I can definitely recommend the official ICS upgrade on the Sensation.
It has been running on my Sensation XE for about 4 weeks now, with battery life nearly doubled compared to Gingerbread. It is fast and smooth like butter on my Sensation XE.
I've not felt the need to root my handset, I really love the Sense 3.6.!
I sold my Samsung Galaxy S II before the 'official' ICS upgrade, but I already had the leaked ICS running on it well before it was made available.
I bought the Sensation XE with the knowledge that the official ICS would be available shortly.
And I don't regret that move.
As someone who used the HTC Sensation on Gingerbread for 6 months, getting ICS was like HTC giving me a quad core new phone for free. It is MUCH better with ICS. Battery life lasts at least twice as long. Performance is on par with iOS, something which I could never say with Android 2.3.
Compared to my iPad 2, it is now 90% the smoothness. Before it was hardly 45-50% as smooth.
So yeah, I would like to say good job Google! And good job HTC!
ICS has hardware acceleration, boasting better battery life and a smoother experience, I can't go back to a phone or rom that doesn't have it.
ICS is amazing, yes. Sense 3.6 is a great upgrade from 3.0 but ever since I rooted my phone and installed sense 4 I am never turning back. It's so clean and smooth I just can't go back to any 3.X Sense version ever again. You won't be sorry if you give sense 4 a go ahead.
