This may be an easy answer for some, but I have been scratching my head about this for a while now. My dad does surveying for farm fields, and is always in a place with no service when he can clearly see a tower a mile or two away. He was always frustrated that he couldn't get any service, so he went up to Alltel "back in the day" and complained about it to the manager and explained his situation. He said that the manager actually took his phone in the back and programmed it so that it would pick up service off of practically any tower. He said that was the best coverage he has ever had. A while after that, the manager position was refilled with someone new and his phone was starting to give out on him after constant abuse outdoors (mostly). When he traded for a new phone and asked for the same treatment, the new manager told him that there was no possible way to do that and denied him any special treatment. Let's just say he was VERY frustrated to have to go back to the spotty coverage. I've always wondered if there was a way to perform the same mod to a phone that the manager did back when. I recently ran across that secret menu that allows you to change the preferred network type. I found one option that says: GSM/CDMA auto (PRL). I selected that option, and rebooted my phone to see if it would survive reboot. It did not. I figure that Verizon would monitor this anyways and if they saw that you were accessing other towers (if it is possible), they would ban you or shut off your service or whatever they do. Could anyone shed any light on this issue? My dad needs it. Badly.
Thanks in advance,
Adam

Simple answer now is no. The hardware antenna is made to only work one one version of signal. Back in the day almost all cells were cdma.
Ah. Well that sucks. Too bad I'm not nifty. I'd be cracking this phone open and installing another antenna to work in tandem with the factory installed. But I guess that still doesn't solve anything if you can't get it to operate on the other service without Big Brother finding out.

Yeah no way to make it work with out activating it on another network as well. That is if you could get the system to even see the other antenna.

Anyone know if a lost G2X can be tracked down if T-Mobile Security had not been downloaded yet?
Not unless you have some other app like SeekDroid or Lookout installed. If you report the IMEI as stolen there technically may be a way for T-Mobile to track it but it's probably not worth their time/money, and I think the IMEI can be spoofed anyways.
Sorry
Thanks, I didn't even know about the T-mobile security and that I was eligible until I called this afternoon. What really sucks is I had a pretty good phone with the only issue being the wifi connection. I hope this next one doesn't blow.
You could try out Plan B from Android Market. I would post a link but I don't have enough posts yet to be allowed to do so.
Thanks for the rec, just reactivated the line and am going to try this in a couple of hours. Fingers crossed. Here's the link in case anyone else is interested:

I still recommend SeekDroid but to each their own.
Interesting that Plan B can be installed and activated remotely though...
A guy at my work sold me a droid x for 30$ and when I charged it, and turned it on, lookout kept sending me a text message saying it was broadcasting the gps location. Of course its only accurate up to 500 or something, so it could be difficult to pinpoint the theif. Knowing what I know, I could have rooted it, flashed cwm and a rom possibly faked the imei but im a nice guy lol. So I answered every call that came in until I found the owner, and got my 30$ back. Turns out the guy at my work stole it...

As long as the phone is on, which mine isn't. Either the battery died or someone was smart enough to turn it off or take out the sim card. Lesson learned.
I have no reason to believe this as I haven't been able to find any proof of it but...
I read on the Android and Droid forums that Carriers keep a database of users that root their phones and will block your warranty if you try to return it for anything. I've never heard of this happening to, well...anyone. But the point was also brought up that Google is able to tell if the device is rooted due to the fact that they can block the movies tab from showing up in Market on rooted phones, so carriers can do the same. So, my question is... has anyone heard of this happening or had it happen to them?
I'm pretty sure that is all bull****. I work at best buy mobile and barely anyone knows what rooting is. I'm the only one in my department that messes with that kind of stuff and knows which phones are rooted. We also get crazy carrier support and they just tell us to not mention anything about rooting/jail breaking. Same with my friend who is a manager at verizon. He doesn't know how to detect a rooted phone.
So when you bring in a messed up phone for warranty, everyone is trained to just make sure imei numbers match with original receipt and to check the water mark stickers.

Yep, that's what they were saying on the Droid forums. It didn't click that its cdma devices they were talking about, and not GSM. Hopefully they don't find a way to do it. I read that over 60% of all android phones are rooted...that's alot of voided warranties.

I believe that the number of rooted android phones would be closer to 10%, rather than 60%. The average person is just not geared into fiddling with their phones the way we in the modding community are. Most of my friends, I'm sad to say, are running around with 4 or 5 year old feature phones, and will happily keep on using those things until they finally give up the ghost.
Another deterrent to rooting is that many people are paranoid about voiding their warranty. If you're into modding, losing your warranty is something that you had to come to terms with long ago. You just accept the fact that whatever happens to the phone is now YOUR problem and move on - but a lot of people can't, so they refuse to make any changes to their phones. In the end, we are a minority of cell phone users, albeit an *enlightened* minority.

I agree with most of the guys here. Its impossible for AT&T to detect if your phone is rooted or not. Mostly because there is no function on your phone created to send that kind of info to your carrier. Plus if you are on another carrier like T-Mobile they cant tell your IMEI which means they wont know what phone are you using in first place.

As a matter of fact, I just did a warranty exchange on my inspire just the other day. I flashed back to stock and s-on before the exchange. But before doing so, I've been on the phone to the warranty department multiple times to troubleshoot the issues I've been having and not once did they mention or even ask if my phone was rooted. If they could detect that my phone was rooted, they would have denied my request for a warranty exchange. And if that were the case, i would think they would explain the denial due to it being rooted.

I don't believe AT&T can tell if you are rooted unless you are using a custom apn for data. The stock apns are locked down and I have found trying to have three apns will cause issues. When AT&T sees data registering thru "wap.cingular", instead of "phone", they will know a user more than likely rooted their phone. When they see really heavy data usage on "wap.cingular" they will suspect tethering, but can't tell unless they go analyze it. With the stock apns, one can look at usage on their bill and see usage for both apns. Usage for "wap.cingular" will be very small, as it is used only for location services and the occasional mms. The bulk of data will show on the "phone" apn.

Well I have this same problem and I'm sure ATT gets a lot of these requests so another person stated it "the money spent investigating these claims would far outweigh the cost of the phone" as this is true as the phone is made literally cents if not less a cent on the dollar in sweat shops around the world. Im going to the ATT tech/warranty shop tomorrow and i would imagine that the legal cost of them trying to prove that the phone had been rooted vs them just replacing the parts or simply doing clean wipe with the technical tools they have at hand far outweigh the legal costs of litigation that they would have to pursue in the US at literally at an exponential cost just for the parts and labor/tech support of the phone. Plus from a business perspective they would lose millions in customers if they gave existing/long-term customers any flack about an expensive phone they paid for along with a long-term plan.
I just got one of theses. Anyone know how to root? I had an LG thrill with acihazard 4 oc to 1300 that met with an unfortunate accident involving bricks. Loved that damn phone :,(

Does anybody know how to view the hidden menu on this phone? I am running the 4.0.4. Rooted and I still cannot figure out how to access it. All I really want is to turn off 4Glte on this phone because I live in a no 4G city and my battery is being wasted on 4G scanning. I have tried LTE toggle apps but they get blocked and a little notification saying "access to system info is prohibited " pops up. Being rooted I should have a way to bypass that, but I have no idea what file or app I need to edit to do so. If anyone out here can help me I will be forever grateful. The boys over at android forums have not been able to help. I'm beginning to think there is no hope. If anyone knows the secret code to view the hidden menu or just simply has a way to shut off the program that denies me from viewing system info it would be awesome. Going from a gnex to this in effort to get better battery life has backfired thus far.
Thanks in advance.

See there is no option to switch from 3g only to 4g/3g modes. That's why I am going crazy trying to find it. I have used any cut and other apps to be able to find this hidden "test mode" menu that I have been digging for. Unfortunately the phone info menu in this setting is still blocked. Every time I try to view it I get a little popup saying "access to phone info is prohobited" thus presenting my problem. I have root explorer and I am not afraid to use it. Does anybody here know what program or permission is prohibiting me? I will edit/delete it as soon as it is located. Nobody is prohibiting me from viewing settings on my phone... At least once I find out how to gain access to them.

Hey I need some advice I have a HTC One V CDMA 4.0.3 rooted none of the OTA patches through Cricket,
Last 2 months 3 or 4 times a week I dial someone's number from my phone book and it will ring like normal but all of a sudden I will start hearing a lady's voice she will say random stuff then she will pause and like usual I will ask who she is and why she is doing this to me she will start laughing and then state "I know you better than you know your self" she will then pause and wait then start talking about things that have gone on in my house that only me my wife and my children know about... I'm really upset and cricket isn't helping me and I am at the point where I am really concerned.
If anyone has any ideas please share I am at wits end and my computer is down so I can't access anything online except for on my phone.
Thanks

When did this start occuring? Was it after you downloaded a specific application? Have you ever left your phone unattended? Since you have a CDMA phone, it is extremely difficult to clone your phone compared to a GSM phone, since you do not have a SIM card in your device. If you can find the suspect app and remove it, it should take care of your problems, however, I would recommend getting a new device since it sounds like your device has already been compromised.
I would contact the authorities immediately. If you're in the US, it's probable the FBI will get involved as that would probably fall under the category of wiretapping, which holds serious federal penalties.
I've never left my phone unattended I always keep it with me even at night I'm disabled and have to be able to get to a phone at all times.
I agree I should get a new handset I was hoping to be able to ride this out until the end of the month.
I've tried contacting local authorities they didn't seem to understand or grasp the concept of what was going on.
As for the app idea I may get try that and see if it does it any more I do have a packet tracer app I might run it and see if it shows any weird activity from certain apps.
If worse comes to worse I'll contact a friend of mine who I went to school with he is a fbi agent and see what he says... I'm a old school hacker of sorts if I had stable wifi and a working pc and could VPN through my pc and run a sniffer the whole time I am sure I would be able to figure this out in a snap.
Thanks for the replies.

First, I'm 30 and I've never even owned a cell phone. I'm very tech savvy with computer hardware/BIOS ROM flashes/linux etc. My most sincere apologies for any terminology mistakes and for not knowing enough on the subject. I've been researching this for the last week but I've hit a brick wall while trying to learn more.
I ordered a (working, stock) used Samsung Galaxy S 4G (NOT an S4). Should get it in a day or two.
I want to use it without any cell service what so ever; strictly over my home Wifi network and free hotspots. I'm planning to use Google voice or Oomas app for free/cheap voice service over wifi. The phone was cheap so I consider it a learner/throwaway phone to get my foot in the door with regards to phone rooting/flashing/modding. No worries about bricking the thing as I stumble around in a haze of noobish stupidity and ignorance.
Bleh.. I don't even know what terms to ask/search so I'll just spit it out as best I can.
The SGS4G uses a sim card or will ask me to activate a phone service before I can use it right? There are password/button combinations to manually bypass activation but that's a pain to do every boot. Is the activation built into the Kernal or the Firmware? Are there ROMs that ignore/disable cell activation nags to make this thing a strictly WiFi device? What search terms should I be using to find more info?
Apologies again for the noobish questions and much thanks for any tidbits of info you could toss my way!
I .. Think you'll have to unlock it.. U seem excited and nervous.. Don't stress yourself

Turns out its a Mesmerize. I also picked up a couple other android phones and was able to get them rooted and flashed; an LG-P505 flashed to Cyanogen 10 and a MyTouch 3G (HTC Magic 32b) rooted finally. T-mobile had a impassable "insert sim card" screen on the MyTouch 3G that took a GoldCard flash to even get into the phone.
Anyway, I'm totally stuck with this damned Mesmerize. I get nothing on the USB despite having the drivers installed and waiting. Nothing in device manager. The phone charges and brings up the connection mode announcement in the pull down. I've got USB debugging mode set. It will show a greyed out drive that i can't access when in mass storage mode and nothing at all when on KIES mode. The cable worked fine for the LG. Could the USB socket on the Mesmerize be screwed? Any way to force the phones adb client on?
Thanks again for any help you might have. Badass site here. Could read until my eyes bleed and still have more info to look through!
