[Q] HTC Inspire Factory Reset Fail - HTC Inspire 4G

Hello Everyone, I have a problem with my HTC Inspire 2.3.3
I can't open any app on my phone, mostly the apps on the SD card, when I click on the app it always tells me that the app has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again |Force Close - Report|.
So I tried to do a Factory Reset in both ways
(by going to SD & phone storage then factory reset. And by clicking volume down and power buttom)
and it's not going through, the phone just restarts and it freezes on the HTC logo
so I had to take the battery out and power it back on.
I clicked on Recovery then somehow it showed me a factory reset option and when I clicked on it, it showed me this message

E:Can't open /data/cw.prop
E:Can't open /cache/cwpkg.zip

is there any solution to this problem ? Please Help
Thankyou!

Were you running an oem ROM and not rooted? When you were trying to access your sd card you didn't happen to have your phone connected to the USB on your computer?

I assume you are rooted since you are able to access recovery. Fyi, don't ever try a factory reset outside of recovery on a rooted device. It will open a can of worms. As for your sd card, have you tried using a new one. Also you could back up the one you have and try reformatting it(fat 32). Make sure you are only moving apps you have downloaded to the sd card. Apps that use widgets or that are part of the rom need to be left in phone memory. Even apps that meet the proper criteria can have issues when on your sd card as well so try and minimize the amount of apps you do this with.

Sorry I don't know what an oem ROM is
and when I want to access my SD card I just take it out and put it in the adapter and access it.

Sorry I don't know what rooted means but when my phone use to work I had some apps that didn't work because it said my phone wasn't rooted ? so I guess no my phone is not rooted.
And r u saying the problem is with the SD card ? because I can just use a different one
about the factory reset, is there anyway to make it work ?
Thankyou.

Please Help!

I guess we need to figure out what condition your phone is in. You said you entered recovery which can't be done on an all stock phone. How did you get into recovery. Was it through hboot? Also does it say s on or s off in hboot?

Did you buy your phone new from your carrier or used from an individual?

Have you purchased the phone within the past year? I'm just thinking if it's still in warranty you should not have an issue getting a new one. From what I can see in this post it's not like you had your phone rooted. I have had to get a few different Inspire's over the course of the year and never had an issue getting a new one sent out and shipping back the old. Just a thought...

Gizmoe, Can he try installing the 2.47 RUU from the bootloader? Will he need a goldcard possibly? Or do you think his NAND is just shot?
Have you tried removing that SD card and booting without it?

Isn't it possible to try to install the update from the HTC.com web site?
Maybe it's worth a try

What I would do is download the gingerbread ruu and HTC sync from website. Install HTC sync. Put phone into fastboot through hboot, plug into pc and run ruu. You will be back to out of the box condition afterwards.
If you have the same issues and have tried a different sd card after this then the phone is malfunctioning.

I just now have experienced this same issue. No rooting, no unlocking, my phone is just not working.
I am a total n00b here...computer literate programmer, just didn't take the time to root/unlock the phone as I was reasonably happy with it. Now I'm limping along on an Aria.
Is there a way to get to it from the bootloader screen and reset the stock ROM? Or I'll root it, if possible.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I have figured out how to unlock the bootloader, but I still have s-on. I have been trying to find the stock RUU to download but every link is broken. Even HTC doesn't have it any more.
Does anyone have a good link to the stock RUU?

I found an RUU but it complains about low battery level, even though I left it plugged in and charging all night.
If I have to buy a new battery, will it still charge?

Same problem
I have the same problem as the orginal guy, except it wont load. I've tried a bunch of things to unbrick and none of them have worked yet. My phone isn't rooted and i dont beleive his is either. i ahve clockworkmod recovery on it but thats about it. Mine bricked after i tried to install a rom.

[Q] lost password / New SD Card

Ok so my brother bought this I believe to be an Inspire 4g from someone on Craigslist, he said she showed it to him and everything was fine.
When he got it home the password screen was on and he couldnt get into it.
I had him try removing the battery and then going into the HBOOT screen and doing factory restore, when this happens it vibrates once then 7 times really quick and stays on the HTC screen. I checked and he doesn't have the SD Card that came with the phone. I gave him one of mine that was formatted to fat32, then when he booted it there is a couple folders on it from the phone but still unable to set it back to defaults. Would I be able to put a factory image on the SD Card and do a restore? If so where can I find a factory image? I don't belive this phone has been rooted yet so it would have to be a AT&T image. Someone please advise, also before you say email her for the password, she wont respond idk if she did this on purpose or what.
Search for the stock ruu, version 1.80 and try running that if you don't want to root.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using Tapatalk
I dont mind rooting it but as far as using RUU none of them will recognize phone because the settings are for USB to be charge only and I cannot get past the pin code screen to change it.
Is it possible to get a stock image, put it on the SD card and change it like that?
Or how can I root it without access to install anything on it?
Can you get it into HBOOT? You can install a stock ROM as a PD98IMG.zip, but you need to be able to get into HBOOT. Try pulling the battery for a few minutes, then hold VOL-UP and hit POWER to get to HBOOT.
Try here for the image file:

Yes put the whole zip in the SD card. Do not unzip it. Boot into that screen and it'll ask you if youwant to apply the file just say yes
No Hay de Queso No Mas de Papa
awesome, ill give it a shot after work this evening. Thanks!!
no dice, it went through the process (failed first time on user data so i ran it again and it was successful) then it said push power button to reboot, it vibrates 7 times then stays on the screen that just says HTC, eventually i removed the battery and powered up to find the stupid password screen still there, tried doing factory reset again and same thing 7 vibrations and htc screen indefinitly. Any other ideas or image files i could try???

The pd98img file should have wiped everything, not sure how the password remained.
Idk maybe try the file again, thirds time the charm.
The only other file I can think of is the gingerbread ruu leak
No Hay de Queso No Mas de Papa
will that work even though I'm not rooted?
Its completely stock, so your fine. Its the update that inspires are suppose to get anyday now. I just have to figure out how to pullthe pd98img zip from the ruu.
I think it puts it in a temp folder somewhere when you run the ruu. Hopefully I can find it, or someone already has it pulled for you
No Hay de Queso No Mas de Papa
so the RUU worked except now when I boot it up .... SAME THING! still asking for password. Same background, nothing has changed!
i ran the ruu again and it says it still has the old version on it wtf?
ok im stumped!!!
you ran the gingerbread RUU?
ive seen this one other time where running the PD98img files said it flashed but it still said the old one. Unfortunately we never got an answer to that
Yea the one on HTC's site fr e the desire failed but the one here worked
http://driphter.com/index.php?topic=3872.0
but once it completed and tries to reboot the phone it vibrates seven times and freezes on the HTC screen again.
I manually remove battery to reboot and back to square one.
Ive tried it both with sd card in and out.

EDIT- heres is the link to the gingerbread PD98IMG
http://www.multiupload.com/P13PZJ2JBN
try this one, and see if this one works
same deal, update complete, press power to reboot. Vibrate once, HTC screen vibrates 7 times and freezes. Remove battery, battery in, power on, same password screen it boots to.
I hate to tell my brother he got ripped off but it is starting to look that way.
Can you upload some sort of video of you trying to go through the process, for us to see if you are making any errors?

No best I can do is walk through word for word, I'm not new to this by any means I've had a fuse and a tilt 2 that I've unlocked and put custom ROM's on, as well as jailbreaking an Iphone.
So here is what is going on.
Ive done this step with and without SD card in.
1) Removed battery
2) Placed battery back in
3)held down vol, and power until the HBOOT screen comes on.
My options are recovery, factory reset, sim lock, crc img or whatever
4) Vol down to Factory Reset
5) phone reboots with a vibrate like normal, then vibrates 7 times and stays on the HTC screen (white with green letters) until either phone dies or I remove battery.
6) reboot it hoping the factory reset took and no back to the lock screen
-----------------------------------
Didnt work that way lets try putting either the factory image or the updated gingerbread version on!
1) Download the PD98img.zip file
2) put Micro SD card in laptop and format to FAT32
3) move PD98IMG.zip file to the freshly formatted Micro SD Card
4) Remove battery from Phone
5) Put Micro SD card in phone
6) Put Battery in phone
7) Hold down Vol Down and Power Buttons
8) HBOOT Screen appears then checks for PD98IMG.IMG, .nbh, .zip
9) Hboot checks PD98IMG.zip
10) This will update blah blha continue press Vol Up for yes
11) Now with the Gingerbread update it was successful every time, with the factory image it would fail then work the next time.
12) Update Complete press Power to reboot
13) PRess Power
14) reboots, vibrates, HTC screen, Vibrates 7 times and freezes
15) remove battery
16) boot it back up
17) Lock Screen again with this awful goddamn red wallpaper!!

[Q] Phone is partially bricked...?

Hey guys,
I think my phone is partially bricked. I know that sounds weird, but here's the situation:
I was able to unlock my bootloader (faced multiple write errors using fastboot but it did unlock eventually), I can't reflash using Odin (it fails Error is "Complete Write Fail"), when I tried to format some partitions using clockwork I get:
E: format_volume: make_extf4fs failed on /dev/block/platform/s3c-sdhci.0/by-name/system
Error formatting /system!
No linux newb here, so I'm guessing my internal partition is fubared..
Here's what's funny... I can flash a rom and boot into the rom usually on the first try. If I boot into the rom, it runs fine until I reboot the phone. Then it takes another *LITERALLY* 10 times of pulling the battery and rebooting the phone because the phone sticks at the Google boot logo. I can boot into recovery, fastboot, no problem.
As my phone sits right now: I can flash clockwork, bootloader unlocked. I'm having to try the NAND restore to 2.3.1 to get it to work. I rebooted the phone multiple times, no problems but then after a phone call...get a notification that the sd card was suddenly removed and now I'm back to square one..
Does anyone have a clue as to why my phone decided to unmount the internal storage and why I can't get this thing to work correctly 100%?
Thanks guys..
Btw, I usually can't mount the USB storage using clockwork when I get these errors. I have to keep rebooting the phone until I get lucky enough to format the /sdcard, then try and mount it up to my computer.
Just rebooted the phone, flashed /system, and mounted up the USB..
Can anyone explain this??

yup, this ones explainable. classic symptoms of a ns with its internal sd card dying/dead. it happens way too often unfortunately. luckily its a fairly easy and inexpensive repair, if youre not under warranty.
Any direction on how to fix it while not under warranty?
Or take it to tmobile?

check out any local mobile device repair shops. you could probably do it yourself if you dont fear taking the phone apart, it should be to difficult of a repair. its just a matter of buying a replacement(ebay?), taking the phone apart, and replacing the sd.

You can check whether there are blocks flagged as bad by FTL (Flash Translation Layer) in recovery. Check recovery.log file (it can be, the bad blocks will show up after formats).

Your description is confusing to me. Your thread title says it is softbricked but then you say that you put the phone in debug mode? Does your rom boot fully?
Are you trying to toolkit from the Rom, bootloader or fastboot?
If you typed adt devices it won't show anything lol

Sorry I meant adb devices. I thought the SD card error means soft brick. Sorry for my ignorance. M able to boot and use my phone. Just that sd card won't work and I am not able to connect to adb or all in one kit to fix my issue. I tried connecting after normal boot and from recovery mode and even from boot loader screen. No luck with either of them.
I had an issue with softbricking my phone. A good last resort is to flash the RUU (thats what i was told to do and it worked like a charm). It will totally reset your phone to factory settings...and you will need to re-lock your bootloader (just use the All-In-One Toolkit) but besides that, you will once again have a working phone and can just re-root it. If you need the RUU file I can supply the link to it with a little bit of searching. Good Luck!

Everyone's so ready to have a guy run a RUU. Even if he did that it he still would be stuck.
If the toolkit isn't working then you have done something wrong.
Check in device manager and look if you see a category that says "android usb devices"

If it's not there you don't have the driver installed correctly. If it is there, double check that you have developer options enabled. In the develop options menu check for something that say enable android debugging.
While you phone is booted normally, plug it into your computer. Can you see something in the notification area that says something about debugging mode?
If you got all that done is the toolkit still not working?
I recommend using a Windows 7 PC to install HTC Sync, then copying the folder to your computer. Then install the drivers manually through device manager, selecting the previous folder that you copied. The drivers should detect your phone then.
@dc211 I can't believe your still using XP lol

I connected my phone to a Windows 7 computer and it recognised my phone.
I downloaded All-in-One.
I did not know what is flashing stock recovery. So here is what I did :
I flashed CWM 5.8.3.1(S4).
Then i booted in bootloader and did 'clear storage'. then i did wipe data/factory reset
then i reflashed CWM 5.8.3.1(s4)
Now my phone goes directly into cwm recovery screen automatically.
My SD card still does not mount.
when i try to get into bootloader using All-in-one kit it keeps saying 'waiting for device' on the computer screen and the phone reboots and goes back to CWM recovery screen.
As you are aware there is no removable battery in this phone. I am stuck now. If I hold down the power and Vol down button for as long as one minute nothing happens. Phone eventually comes back to CWM recovery screen.
I tried everything possible from CWM recovery screen. Wiped cache/dalmik cache. Format system/data. Cant format SD card it says unable to mount.
Please HELP !!

Try holding volume down and power. Out should boot into the bootloader.

I already tried that. Holding vol button down + power button restarts the phone in CWM recovery mode
i tried it least 20 times and was finally able to get the phone to boot to bootloader mode
can you guide me to the next set of steps ..
I am totally relying on this forum at the moment.

Run an RUU, whichever suits your CID /bootloader version.

[Q] [4.4.2] Nexus 5 stuck on boot

I'm not sure what info is relevant here so I'll just include everything I can think of.
I was on 4.4 until about 12 hours ago, when I got the update notification for 4.4.2. I am completely stock and have no provider at the moment while I wait for my contract w/verizon to expire. The phone was working fine for the past 11 hours.
My phone was at about 60% and working fine when I tried to install the facebook app. Upon opening the app, the phone went black/unresponsive. I plugged it in and tried to hard reset it-- the google logo would show up but nothing else for 5~10 minutes when I would try to restart the phone. If I pressed the power button down for ~10 seconds, the screen would blink off, but then immediately turn on again to the google logo screen without me pressing the button to turn it back on.
After about 20 minutes of this, I went into bootloader and tried a factory reset. It finished really fast and I clicked the option for reboot. The phone didn't reboot, though, and was frozen.
I hard rebooted and was able to get past the google screen and the 4 colored dots showed for about 10 seconds, and then froze. I hard reset again, and tried wiping the cache. This is the message I am seeing now:
Erasing...
E: Error in /cache/recovery/log
(Read only file system)
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/last_install
-- Wiping Cache...
E: Failed to mount /cache (Invalid argument)
Formatting /cache...
And it's been like that for half an hour. I don't know if it's actually doing something, the blue completion bar isn't updating and looks frozen.
If you have any advise on how I can restore my phone to working condition, I'd be really grateful. Thanks!
So your on a stock ROM? Seems like you were in a boot loop and then you did something that erased your internal card. (That's what it sounds like anyways) Its not a big issue tho, you can fix it. You have no root what so ever right? If yes. Then just flash a stock ROM through the BOOTLOADER. There is a tutorial for that on the website.
BTW did your Recovery look like this?

Cool. So that option that says "Apply update through ADB" side load the stock ROM through that using ADB again and you should be fine!

Okay, I'm having some problems. I tried to side load image-hammerhead-krt16m.zip with the command in command prompt:
[adb sideload image-hammerhead-krt16m.zip]
It sent successfully, but I have a lot of error messages on my phone:
http: i.imgur.com/xqZ0K5k.jpg
The important one seems to be
"Failed to set up expected mounts for install; aborting
Installation aborted"
And when I restart and try to boot, it gets to the animated dots and doesn't progress from there. When I go back into recovery, it still says [KOT49H] so I don't think sideloading worked.
Are you sideloading Android 4.4.2? If yes, then your doing it wrong. You have to load 4.4 on it, you should erase everything first and then do a clean load. I think there are some files that are corrupt preventing from the current sideload from working.

Can you boot into fastboot?
If so, follow this guide (make sure drivers are installed)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2513701
It looks to me like in the beginning your cache.img was corrupted, so you could get away with just flashing the cache.img from the above files, but now I would just do the entire thing.
i have this problem

Bricked again ?

Hi all,
I just got my TF300T back from Asus after i bricked it.
New software has been installed be Asus and ofc. it was on stock Android 4.2.1
I used Motochopper Rooting Toolkit to root the device and i installed TWRP 2.6.3.0
All went fine up untill here, i copied CM 11 to the tablet and booted up in recovery.
The install of CM 11 failed for some reason so i tried formatting the whole internal storrage.
On top of that i thought it might have been the recovery so i flashed CWM 6.0.2.3 to see if that worked.
I didnt realise i just had deleted the CM 11 .zip file so its not on the tablet anymore.
When i boot up the tablet i can get into recovery (CWM) but i cant get a valid rom in the internal memory.
When i put CM11 or any other rom on a micro SD card the tab/cwm doesnt see the external card.
Also i tried the mounting options and all fail.
I have used a 64Gb card and a 16Gb card, both arnt recognized.
Is there a way to get the .zip rom to my tablet and flash it in CWM?
I think fastboot is broken as well because when i fastboot devices the tab isnt recognize.
At first i could get into fastboot screen but after the tab said cold booting linux its broken as well.
So now i cant boot into the RCK / android / wipe data icon screen anymore since i also wiped data through the wipe data icon.
Only thing that happens now the tablet boots in Asus screen and directly goes into CWM.
Any idea's ?
Cheers
Good news, i got ADB working.
What should i do?
Rgds !
Cheered to soon, seems like all the ADB commands do not work, see ataached image.
ADB devices show a device and when i unplug it it doesnt show a device.
Funny the device name is 12345789ABCDE.....
Any ideas someone ?

Did you do NvFlash? that could restore it. Usually Wiping data from that screen ends up in a hard brick.

It's almost frustrating to see a tablet wrecked that way. I'm not faulting you, just that all of it was totally avoidable with 10 minutes spent skimming the basics. CWM has no version that works with 4.2 bootloader, except the one embedded in the NVflash image which, of course, you ignored. Now if you get to CWM, and type "adb reboot-bootloader", what happens? If it takes you to fastboot, flash the correct version of TWRP 2.6.x.x-4.2). Failing that, search for Buster99's method. Good luck.
