Ok so my brother bought this I believe to be an Inspire 4g from someone on Craigslist, he said she showed it to him and everything was fine.
When he got it home the password screen was on and he couldnt get into it.
I had him try removing the battery and then going into the HBOOT screen and doing factory restore, when this happens it vibrates once then 7 times really quick and stays on the HTC screen. I checked and he doesn't have the SD Card that came with the phone. I gave him one of mine that was formatted to fat32, then when he booted it there is a couple folders on it from the phone but still unable to set it back to defaults. Would I be able to put a factory image on the SD Card and do a restore? If so where can I find a factory image? I don't belive this phone has been rooted yet so it would have to be a AT&T image. Someone please advise, also before you say email her for the password, she wont respond idk if she did this on purpose or what.
Search for the stock ruu, version 1.80 and try running that if you don't want to root.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using Tapatalk
I dont mind rooting it but as far as using RUU none of them will recognize phone because the settings are for USB to be charge only and I cannot get past the pin code screen to change it.
Is it possible to get a stock image, put it on the SD card and change it like that?
Or how can I root it without access to install anything on it?
Can you get it into HBOOT? You can install a stock ROM as a PD98IMG.zip, but you need to be able to get into HBOOT. Try pulling the battery for a few minutes, then hold VOL-UP and hit POWER to get to HBOOT.
Try here for the image file:

Yes put the whole zip in the SD card. Do not unzip it. Boot into that screen and it'll ask you if youwant to apply the file just say yes
No Hay de Queso No Mas de Papa
awesome, ill give it a shot after work this evening. Thanks!!
no dice, it went through the process (failed first time on user data so i ran it again and it was successful) then it said push power button to reboot, it vibrates 7 times then stays on the screen that just says HTC, eventually i removed the battery and powered up to find the stupid password screen still there, tried doing factory reset again and same thing 7 vibrations and htc screen indefinitly. Any other ideas or image files i could try???

The pd98img file should have wiped everything, not sure how the password remained.
Idk maybe try the file again, thirds time the charm.
The only other file I can think of is the gingerbread ruu leak
No Hay de Queso No Mas de Papa
will that work even though I'm not rooted?
Its completely stock, so your fine. Its the update that inspires are suppose to get anyday now. I just have to figure out how to pullthe pd98img zip from the ruu.
I think it puts it in a temp folder somewhere when you run the ruu. Hopefully I can find it, or someone already has it pulled for you
No Hay de Queso No Mas de Papa
so the RUU worked except now when I boot it up .... SAME THING! still asking for password. Same background, nothing has changed!
i ran the ruu again and it says it still has the old version on it wtf?
ok im stumped!!!
you ran the gingerbread RUU?
ive seen this one other time where running the PD98img files said it flashed but it still said the old one. Unfortunately we never got an answer to that
Yea the one on HTC's site fr e the desire failed but the one here worked
http://driphter.com/index.php?topic=3872.0
but once it completed and tries to reboot the phone it vibrates seven times and freezes on the HTC screen again.
I manually remove battery to reboot and back to square one.
Ive tried it both with sd card in and out.

try this one, and see if this one works
same deal, update complete, press power to reboot. Vibrate once, HTC screen vibrates 7 times and freezes. Remove battery, battery in, power on, same password screen it boots to.
I hate to tell my brother he got ripped off but it is starting to look that way.
Can you upload some sort of video of you trying to go through the process, for us to see if you are making any errors?
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using XDA Premium App
No best I can do is walk through word for word, I'm not new to this by any means I've had a fuse and a tilt 2 that I've unlocked and put custom ROM's on, as well as jailbreaking an Iphone.
So here is what is going on.
Ive done this step with and without SD card in.
1) Removed battery
2) Placed battery back in
3)held down vol, and power until the HBOOT screen comes on.
My options are recovery, factory reset, sim lock, crc img or whatever
4) Vol down to Factory Reset
5) phone reboots with a vibrate like normal, then vibrates 7 times and stays on the HTC screen (white with green letters) until either phone dies or I remove battery.
6) reboot it hoping the factory reset took and no back to the lock screen
-----------------------------------
Didnt work that way lets try putting either the factory image or the updated gingerbread version on!
1) Download the PD98img.zip file
2) put Micro SD card in laptop and format to FAT32
3) move PD98IMG.zip file to the freshly formatted Micro SD Card
4) Remove battery from Phone
5) Put Micro SD card in phone
6) Put Battery in phone
7) Hold down Vol Down and Power Buttons
8) HBOOT Screen appears then checks for PD98IMG.IMG, .nbh, .zip
9) Hboot checks PD98IMG.zip
10) This will update blah blha continue press Vol Up for yes
11) Now with the Gingerbread update it was successful every time, with the factory image it would fail then work the next time.
12) Update Complete press Power to reboot
13) PRess Power
14) reboots, vibrates, HTC screen, Vibrates 7 times and freezes
15) remove battery
16) boot it back up
17) Lock Screen again with this awful goddamn red wallpaper!!

Hey guys
Been having a problem with my phone.
I have just bought a magic from someone off craigslist and it was rooted with the hero rom installed on it. I was using the phone till I got home. Once I was home I did a factory reset on the phone because the guy who sold it to me still had some information on it such as contacts and applications that i didn't want so I performed a factory reset from within the settings of the phone. Now here is the problem. After the factory reset the phone doesn't load into the OS anymore. I turn it on and the rogers logo shows up for a few seconds then the HTC magic logo comes up for a few seconds after that the hero logo comes up with the android robot animation. After the hero animation the screen goes black but the backlight is still on and the hero screen comes up again and it would go through the animation and the screen would go black again. It would keep looping this hero screen over and over again. I left the phone on for like 10 mins thinking maybe it takes a few mins to load the OS and stuff but I don't think that is the case.
I am not really sure which version of magic this is. Just from looking at it, it is an HTC branded magic. No carrier logo just HTC on the front and on the back. When I go into the fastboot screen it reads

The top part says it is an 32B board the 192MB version but the rest of the info underneath it is like the 288MB version one.
How come mine says UNKNOWN and not PVT like everyone else?
Please any insight on this would be very much appreciated. So sad just got the phone and didn't even get to play with it yet.
Thanks!

did this sort it?
I had the same problem and really did panick!
The way i got around it was to install engineering hspl, Flash recovery 1.1RA-H boot that same recovery then flash the update wipe data.
I haven't gotten around to trying it out yet. I'll take a look at this when I get home. Is this method good for the 32A and 32B boards? I can't determine if mine is the 32A or 32B board. I wanna make sure which board I am working with before I flash and update. Anyone help me out?
I found on the memory card some nandroid files. Is it possible to use the lastest backup to do a restore on the phone to get rid of the looping the hero screen problem?
You might find the wiki useful. It sounds like you've installed a rom that's not meant for your hardware.
See the link to the Sapphire Hacking Wiki in my sig below.

Oh eeks! Please don't flash that recovery image - you'll screw your phone up good - the -H recovery roms are for PVT32A (HTC Branded devices) and you have a PVT32B (Google Branded) so you'll want the RA-1.1.2-G recovery rom.
Read the wiki - it explains all this and that's why I wrote it!!!
thanks i'll have a look
still no dice guys
I am not able to flash the phone with the recovery file. I can't install the USB drivers to use ADB. I tried manually installing the driver from the SDK files from the usb driver folder but it wouldn't let me. I read the wiki that Radix999 suggested. The part about Installing the drivers and SDK utilities you need to connect your PC to your phone. I followed that till it asked me to enable debugging mode on the phone. I cannot put the phone into debugging mode because i cannot turn on the phone to get into the OS. I also tried to edit the driver's .ini file too but still can't install this usb driver.
any solutions guys?
I read somewhere that someone said something bout replacing an update file on the phone's memory card so you can erase and update again. Will this be able to help me with my problem? Can I recover without using a computer?
sorry for all the questions but I am a total newbie at this. I just bought the phone used it for like 2 hrs and did a factory reset and now the phone doesnt work.
Hi 2long,
From your fastboot info, it looks like you have the same phone as I do. Is yours a white HTC Magic with HTC on the back cover?

I haven't rooted my phone yet but I have been reading lots to see what I have here. I'm not convinced 100% that it is a 32B.
I tested booted the recovery-RAv1.1.2G.img, which was listed as being the recovery image for the 32B phones but it didn't work. When I tested it (fastboot boot recovery-RAv1.1.2G.img), the phone would hang on the "Rogers" logo (the first thing to come on the screen).
I then test booted the recovery-RAv1.1.2H.img for the 32A phone but using (fastboot boot recovery-RAv1.1.2H.img) and I got in. I performed the Nandroid backup 2.1.1 and left it at that. I still haven't flashed this image onto the phone yet, but it seems that this is the one that you should be using if your phone is indeed like mine.
BTW, do you happen to live in the GTA? Just curious as I am wondering where my phone came from and if there are more floating around.
Marc
Hey Marc I have exactly the same phone as yours! I am also located in Toronto too. I bought my phone from a guy off craigslist who lives in Brampton but meet up with him at the Rogers center. Hmm from what you are saying sounds very interesting. I haven't got that far into fixing my phone been reading up more info before I take the plunge, don't want to make it worse and not being able to boot into fastboot. I'll keep that info in mind i am going to flash the recovery rom now hope it fixes the rebooting issue

I had the same problem with yours.I just flash and solved this problem.I did factory reset after that it can't pass hero screen.
I had the same problem as yours. The reason is that I was using 32B rom on 32A Magic (Rogers Magic - HTC Branded). As everyone is saying just wipe the data and reflash your phone and you will be fine.
I have been trying to flash my ROM all day now. I keep getting messages in the command prompt about cannot load recovery.img when i type in "fastboot boot recovery.img", cannot load boot.img from typing in "fastboot flash boot boot.img" whats the deal with that?
I am pretty sure the computer detects my phone tho cause when i type in "adb devices" it returns with the serial number of the phone. I type in "adb root" it says it adab is already running as root, I type in fastboot devices it comes up with the serial number too.
how do i wipe the data? My phones doesn't turn on tho.
what am i doing wrong guys? So frustrating haha
oh wow i finally managed to get the fastboot boot recovery-rav1.1.2.g.img to work!!!
I am getting the same problem as glhturbo did. I tried booting with the rav1.1.2g.img and it hanged at the rogers logo. I tried it with the rav1.1.2h.img and i got into the htc android system recovery utility screen. hmmm i am scared to continue now, as i was told and the phone also says it is a 32b version but the 32a version seems to work on it. What would happen if i flash it to the rav1.1.2h? What should i do now?
You can't restore nandroid backups without a modded or engeneering SPL.
To use fasboot commands you have to have the phone in fastboot mode. If you boot the recovery image fastboot commands will not work. So.
adb commands work in recovery mode or normal mode (when booted properly)
fastboot commands work when phone is in fastboot mode.
If you have a nandroid backup on your sdcard, then just boot the Amon RA recovery image by putting the phone in fastboot mode, and write fastboot boot recovery-RAv1.1.2H.img (if you haven't set your PATH, then copy the recovery image to the tools folder in the android-sdk folder and run the command from there) then restore the backup or flash a new update.zip which is on the sdcard.
ahhhh finally fix my phone. It turns out that it is not a 32b board cause when i flashed the ROM to ones made for 32b boards it would just hang at the rogers splash screen. I went over to HOFO and loaded one of there Rogers ION firmwares and it works flawless now. Thanks for all who helped out!!
Sorry for the necrobump, but I'm having the EXACT same issue you guys did (and I'm in Burlington... fancy that!).
2long, what guide did you follow to get it recovered? Also, now that Eclare is out, is there a way to put it on the Magic instead of Hero?
I'm really in a hurry to get this fixed... this happened once before to me but I thought I fixed it by redoing the Hero flash right And now I'm without a phone!

and it's not going through, the phone just restarts and it freezes on the HTC logo
so I had to take the battery out and power it back on.

Were you running an oem ROM and not rooted? When you were trying to access your sd card you didn't happen to have your phone connected to the USB on your computer?
I assume you are rooted since you are able to access recovery. Fyi, don't ever try a factory reset outside of recovery on a rooted device. It will open a can of worms. As for your sd card, have you tried using a new one. Also you could back up the one you have and try reformatting it(fat 32). Make sure you are only moving apps you have downloaded to the sd card. Apps that use widgets or that are part of the rom need to be left in phone memory. Even apps that meet the proper criteria can have issues when on your sd card as well so try and minimize the amount of apps you do this with.

I guess we need to figure out what condition your phone is in. You said you entered recovery which can't be done on an all stock phone. How did you get into recovery. Was it through hboot? Also does it say s on or s off in hboot?
Did you buy your phone new from your carrier or used from an individual?

Have you purchased the phone within the past year? I'm just thinking if it's still in warranty you should not have an issue getting a new one. From what I can see in this post it's not like you had your phone rooted. I have had to get a few different Inspire's over the course of the year and never had an issue getting a new one sent out and shipping back the old. Just a thought...
Gizmoe, Can he try installing the 2.47 RUU from the bootloader? Will he need a goldcard possibly? Or do you think his NAND is just shot?
Have you tried removing that SD card and booting without it?
Isn't it possible to try to install the update from the HTC.com web site?
Maybe it's worth a try

What I would do is download the gingerbread ruu and HTC sync from website. Install HTC sync. Put phone into fastboot through hboot, plug into pc and run ruu. You will be back to out of the box condition afterwards.
If you have the same issues and have tried a different sd card after this then the phone is malfunctioning.

I just now have experienced this same issue. No rooting, no unlocking, my phone is just not working.
I am a total n00b here...computer literate programmer, just didn't take the time to root/unlock the phone as I was reasonably happy with it. Now I'm limping along on an Aria.
Is there a way to get to it from the bootloader screen and reset the stock ROM? Or I'll root it, if possible.
Thanks in advance for any help.
I have figured out how to unlock the bootloader, but I still have s-on. I have been trying to find the stock RUU to download but every link is broken. Even HTC doesn't have it any more.
Does anyone have a good link to the stock RUU?
I found an RUU but it complains about low battery level, even though I left it plugged in and charging all night.
If I have to buy a new battery, will it still charge?
Same problem
I have the same problem as the orginal guy, except it wont load. I've tried a bunch of things to unbrick and none of them have worked yet. My phone isn't rooted and i dont beleive his is either. i ahve clockworkmod recovery on it but thats about it. Mine bricked after i tried to install a rom.

You tried to go into recovery but nothing but the image of a
phone
PS: I don't remember if it's the same but you get the concept
DON'T PANIC
Steps:
1. Download the PG88IMG.zip from downstairs
2. Put your sdcard on another phone make sure to put the file on your /sdcard
3. Go into Bootloader (Turn off phone then press the volume down button and the power button to go)
4. It will check for PG88IMG.zip and ask you if you want to install it (vol up for yes)
5. It will ask you to reboot do that
6. Turn off phone
7. Re-put your sdcard on another phone
8. Remove the PG88IMG.zip
9. Put it on your phone with a ROM on it
10. Boot into Bootloader and go to recovery
11. Congrats Clockworkmod is back on
12. Install ROM after wiping cache, data and system and there you go FIXED!
(Do not restore a backup if you were on 4ext recovery it will not work. Install the ROM up fresh then get 4ext recovery updater from market and re-install it then you can restore a backup)
You can also run an old RUU.
mOh19973, first of all thanks for the guide!
I followed it after your suggestion here.
I tried this but even though the file's flashed to the phone the issue remains.
I'm not sure if the phone had CWM previously (I wasn't the one who s-offed/rooted it), so I don't know if that would prevent this from working... would it? I also tried this, but when I select recovery the bootloop just resumes...
Also, all the steps that required putting the sd card in another phone were done on a non-rooted Samsung Galaxy Gio, is that ok?
Thanks again for the help!
EDIT: So, after some info/guides on my original thread the apparent conclusion is... fried eMMC. thanks again everybody
recover update is in progress..... but never completes
Hi
sorry to post it here as reply, I am new in this forum and coundn't find link to create a new post.
My problem is:
My HTC Deire S got automatically restarted time and again last week, later it started going hanged, with black screen if I click Power button which wouldn't wake up until I take off battery and restart again. Few days later even that cannon be done. So I tried to factory restart since I didn't had any other option. but it ended with red triangle and exclamation mark.
Now when I put on the device I just get white screen with HTC logo
So I tried recovery updating
Device asks me if I want to start update
when I press 'Yes" I get :
Update is in progress... (in blue)
Do not power off the device! (in red)
But the update never ends, the screen remains as it is with 'updating' information until it has no battery power.
I had tried it for few times it is always same
I hope to get help from friends over here.
By the way I bought the device in China last May, and it came S-OFF
Information I get when I open HBoot screen is
SAGA PUT SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-0.98.0000
RADIO-38.03.02.15_M
EMMC-boot

You're phone is not really S-OFF the HBOOT is wrong it should be when s-off 6.98.1002 so make sure you do the steps from revolutionary.io
Thank you very much.
Solution worked 100% at mine case.
Flashed PG88IMG.zip from SD, then flashed
RUU_Saga_HTC_Europe_1.47.401.4_Radio_20.28I.30.085AU_3805.06.02.03_M_release_199410_signed.exe
via USB.
Phone alive
I want to kiss you for this solution...........Phew, many thanks
so good, thanks a lot :fingers-crossed:
Thanks.
It worked magnificent.

I cant seem to unlock my bootloader because the phone is stuck on the htc screen therefore i cant enable usb debugging.
Is there are any way to do overcome this?

M new to android. Bought this HTC one s T-Mobile which is rooted and runs cm10 and and android 4.1.2. I have updated it to 10-20121012-nightly-villw in d hope that the WiFi tethering would work. Well it never did. But that is not my prob right now.
I tried a hard reset from bootloader screen and now it says safe to remove SD card. I installed SDK ADT bundle. But the command 'ADT devices ' returns blank. Does not recognise my phone. I downloaded all in one kit and also installed htc drivers given on the same post. Even all in one kit does not recognise my phone. Says device not found. M running vista home premium. I have followed all d steps like putting d phone in debug mode. M I missing something. Pl help. M really stuck now.

Your description is confusing to me. Your thread title says it is softbricked but then you say that you put the phone in debug mode? Does your rom boot fully?
Are you trying to toolkit from the Rom, bootloader or fastboot?
If you typed adt devices it won't show anything lol

Sorry I meant adb devices. I thought the SD card error means soft brick. Sorry for my ignorance. M able to boot and use my phone. Just that sd card won't work and I am not able to connect to adb or all in one kit to fix my issue. I tried connecting after normal boot and from recovery mode and even from boot loader screen. No luck with either of them.
I had an issue with softbricking my phone. A good last resort is to flash the RUU (thats what i was told to do and it worked like a charm). It will totally reset your phone to factory settings...and you will need to re-lock your bootloader (just use the All-In-One Toolkit) but besides that, you will once again have a working phone and can just re-root it. If you need the RUU file I can supply the link to it with a little bit of searching. Good Luck!

Everyone's so ready to have a guy run a RUU. Even if he did that it he still would be stuck.
If the toolkit isn't working then you have done something wrong.
Check in device manager and look if you see a category that says "android usb devices"

If it's not there you don't have the driver installed correctly. If it is there, double check that you have developer options enabled. In the develop options menu check for something that say enable android debugging.
While you phone is booted normally, plug it into your computer. Can you see something in the notification area that says something about debugging mode?
If you got all that done is the toolkit still not working?
I recommend using a Windows 7 PC to install HTC Sync, then copying the folder to your computer. Then install the drivers manually through device manager, selecting the previous folder that you copied. The drivers should detect your phone then.
@dc211 I can't believe your still using XP lol

I connected my phone to a Windows 7 computer and it recognised my phone.
I downloaded All-in-One.
I did not know what is flashing stock recovery. So here is what I did :
I flashed CWM 5.8.3.1(S4).
Then i booted in bootloader and did 'clear storage'. then i did wipe data/factory reset
then i reflashed CWM 5.8.3.1(s4)
Now my phone goes directly into cwm recovery screen automatically.
My SD card still does not mount.
when i try to get into bootloader using All-in-one kit it keeps saying 'waiting for device' on the computer screen and the phone reboots and goes back to CWM recovery screen.
As you are aware there is no removable battery in this phone. I am stuck now. If I hold down the power and Vol down button for as long as one minute nothing happens. Phone eventually comes back to CWM recovery screen.
I tried everything possible from CWM recovery screen. Wiped cache/dalmik cache. Format system/data. Cant format SD card it says unable to mount.
Please HELP !!

Try holding volume down and power. Out should boot into the bootloader.

I already tried that. Holding vol button down + power button restarts the phone in CWM recovery mode
i tried it least 20 times and was finally able to get the phone to boot to bootloader mode
can you guide me to the next set of steps ..
I am totally relying on this forum at the moment.

Run an RUU, whichever suits your CID /bootloader version.

Hey,
The other morning I was using my HTC Sensation XE Z715e as normal, put it down, came back to it an hour or so later, and the touch screen is completely unresponsive. Not flakey response from it, but stone cold dead.
I can switch the phone off/on using the power button, boot into recovery mode using the power/volume buttons, and it still receives calls/messages/emails, but the touch screen is completely dead.
I'm using an Anker battery, so tried the common fix of raising the grounding pin to contact the back case better and folding up some tin foil under the ground pin, but that had no effect. Let the battery completely discharge, pushed the power button with the battery out, left overnight, then re-charged without touching it and still nothing.
I've been through the stickied [FIX] Touchscreen issues thread and haven't found any of the fixes in there have had any effect... Although I'm not sure what firmware I am running, nor how to update it as it is at the moment..
I disassembled the phone far enough to connect a new digitizer to the logic board, booted again and the new digitizer was also dead to the touch. I tried this with the new digitizer hanging loose on the ribbon cable all laid on the desk rather than completely reassembled.
I've since reassembled the phone with all the older hardware.
Problem is that I'm running one of the Cyanogen ROMs with 4EXT Recovery Touch, meaning that when I select Factory Reset from the recovery mode boot screen, it launches into a recovery screen that requires touch input :-/
Anyone know of a way to force a reset through USB? Or anything else to try?
and please treat me like a 5 year old when explaining things to me....
Many thanks!

Just patched HBOOT from 1.27000 (firmware 3.32), to 1.271100 (firmware 3.33), back down to 1.17 for the PG58DIAG to operate properly... As suggested on this thread
Now stuck on the "beatsaudio" boot screen when it boots into the ROM, as I guess the newer ROM doesn't like the older firmware
abd shows the device connected but offline, and booting into the bootloader just immediately results in the 1.17 firmware update being applied...
I need to get the PG58IMG.zip of my SDCard root, and the PG58DIAG.nbh back on... But can't do it through adb (as I have been doing with "push" and "shell" commands) as device won't boot into ROM with older firmware, and have no card reader to do it manually!
:good:
Will have to wait for the GF to arrive home so I can user her HTC Desire C as a lifeboat for my SDCard...

actually why did you downgrade the firmware?
use the 3.33 universal to upgrade to ics again
indeed the ics rom can't boot with gb firmware
and this guide is for unlocking the network(simcard)

Was linked to the network unlocking thread from the Touch-Screen Recalibration Tool thread. The PG58DIAG.nbh tool is the same one that's used in the network unlocking apparently, and apparently only runs properly on firmwares <1.18...
A fair few people on the Touch-Screen Recalibration Tool thread had similar problems to me on version 1.27 and were suggested to roll back to 1.17 using the guide in the User-Friendly Firmware 1.17/3.12/3.24/3.30/3.32/3.33 Universal thread.
So yea, that's how deep does the rabbit hole goes at the moment.. For the moment it's soft-bricked until I can gain access to the SD card....
If nothing else, I've learned a lot today about interacting with my phone through the adb and fastboot tools!

if yes put the 3.33 universal firmware(pg58img.zip) in the root of the sdcard
boot to the bootloader and it will detect it

I didn't, but even if I did I had no way of getting the info onto the micro-SD card.. No card reader on my PC, and the phone wasn't allowing me to copy info onto it.
My GF has just arrived home though so I can use her HTC Desire as an interface for the microSD card..
Getting more errors running the PG58DIAG tool now!
When running the TP Calibration (touch panel), I get the error "I2C read fail" pop up in red.. and no further joy...
