[Q] Resetting 2nd hand galaxy s - General Questions and Answers

Hi all
I'm new here and the thread title may be misleading but I wasn't sure how to word it correctly so apologies in advance.
I have been given a Galaxy S by a friend who has replaced it with an iphone.
I would like to download stuff using Android Market. I keep getting asked for a Google sign in for the previous owners account.
I thought ok I will go to settings and remove the account after setting up my own.
When I go to remove the account it says that the account is required by some applications and that I need to reset to factory defaults.
I realise doing this will result in losing all data and I will need to reload everything. Can I do a backup somehow and copy my contacts etc back to the phone?
Is this reset going to allow me to set the phone up the way I want it and allow me to use Android market.
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Haha.. thanks for the suggestions. I'm so new here I have yet to find out how to do the thanks thing but I guess I will figure that out shortly.
I will have to do some searching because all the terminology is new to me as well.
Where I come from, New Zealand, if something is rooted we usually mean it is broken or not useable lol.
Ok, so this is going to be a new learning experience for me and I think I will enjoy this Board.
I forgot to add, this phone has been unlocked.

[Q] 845 ROM question.....

Hello,
I have a Vodafone 845, and I'd like to try a new custom ROM to get a bit more out of this device. I am fairly clued up with most things computer, but new to Android.
1. Can you please suggest a ROM to try? Mr Edition, V8, The Celestial Teapot, or another??
Also, how do I backup my current ROM so that I can restore it if things go bad?
2. Will a new ROM wipe my settings, contacts etc? (I have it synced with a Google account).
3. Is there some sort of a guide to installing a new ROM like a step by step?
Thanks in advance.

Hi there,
Fellow NZ 845 user here
I've been running Celestial Teapot on my 845 and am very happy with it. I upgraded to the newest version (RLS3), this morning and so far all good.
There's a comprehensive 'how to' a bit further down the page which I followed and wasn't too hard to do.
You will loose ALL contacts, phone settings etc. when you upgrade so it's best if you're prepared ie. backup your contacts at the very least and you should be good to go.
Good luck!
Hey! Dunedin here!
OK, maybe I'll try Celestial Teapot.
As for backing up, what's the best way to do that? Just copy contacts to SIM? Or can I back it all up to a PC?
Wellington here
Best way to backup your contacts would be via the Android PC suite which comes with the phone. Once installed and sync'd you should be fine but just in case export all your contacts to a '.mdb' file so that in the event that something goes wrong with either the phone or the software you can import the said file.
Okay, that should be it - good luck!
OK thanks.
Do you know how to back up the original Vodafone ROM that's in the phone now? So I can restore if needed?
I never bothered backing up what was there, in fact I only used the phone stock for about 5mins before upgrading to teapot - haven't regretted it.
If you do find a way of backing up the Rom though I'm all ears
Backup
You can backup through Clockwork Mod recovery by going to Backup/Restore and clicking backup. It will store it on your SD card. If you want to reinstall that backup, go back to Backup/Restore and click Restore.

Wow thanks! yeah CMR is the way to go indeed, although I sold my V845 6 months ago and am enjoying the Dual core goodness of an LG O2x

Skip bo disappeared from android market...

Any chance anybody has the Skip Bo apk? I had it on my phone but installed a custom rom last night and when I went to download it from the market this morning it was gone. Checked out the developers website/blog and he said it was taken down due to unforseen complications.
I have a nandroid backup that has it on there but how do I get to it without doing a full restore?

Little known solution
I recently found a really good solution to your problem. I love to flash different roms and new releases but have recently found myself hesitant of doing so just because of having to set up all your apps and profiles back to the way you had them. But thanks to a fellow XDA member I have discovered that when using ClockWorkMod Recovery you can easily restore all data from your latest back up. To do so: simply go into Recovery mode, select NANDROID, you will have three options BACKUP, RESTORE, and ADVANCED RESTORE. Select ADVANCED RESTORE and you will be prompted to select which backup you want to restore from. Once you have chosen your most recent BACKUP you will be prompted to RESTORE boot, system, data, cache, or sd-ext. Select Restore data and flash and WOILA!!! When your phone reboots your new ROM will have ALL of your previous DATA and I do mean ALL. Text messages, call history, apps, EVERYTHING. Your phone will even have the wallpaper you had before you data wiped for the new ROM. Hope this helps, I know that it has made me a lot more willing to do anything requiring a data wipe. Anyways, I don't know much but if you happen to learn anything worthwhile and you see someone having a problem take a couple of minutes out of your day and help them. Because this community will only get better when people stop FLAMING and start HELPING... Anyways, peace
That I would be interested too

Wow! thanks alot man, i love flashing new roms/ mods too, & hated having to set up my screens/ apps all over again. Before flashing a new rom, i used to draw out my screens/ apps on a piece of paper just so i could remember what i had, & where. It's really wierd cuz' lots of people down clockworkmod recovery, & seem to favor amon ra, but i've had, & rooted my evo since launch day, & never had problems with it, this makes me feel lots better with my recovery choice
skipbo apk
That's nice about the back up but, seriously, does anyone have the skipbo apk!?

Do you have a link? Can't find skip bo for android on 4shared.com
Try this if yku have skipbo.
If you have skipbo install AppBackupReinstall
Go in, select skipbo, hit menu, select backup. Now go into your sdcard go to appbackup and post that file please.
I have been going thru withdrawal on this game.
I may have it tonight if I can walk my non tech savy brother thru this, if not I will have it on Xmast and post.
Here you go
Ok, so I have attached the APK I created from the instructions prior and a zip file of it.
Make sure you have gone into applications and selected UNKNOWN SOURCES
thanks meter
Let's get the thanks meter going, I need to get out of this junior member status.
So sorry I dont, 4shared has always been a last restore. When you flashed did you do any type of back up. The game can be lost on the sd card.

Thank you VERY MUCH! My wife was going crazy that she could not get this back. She's a happy camper now!
I wonder why he had to remove it. If it's because Mattel had an issue with them marketing it as Skip Bo, that's lame. Unless they're planning to come out with one themselves or license it to someone...

Probably the same reason facebook had to get rid of the scrabulous app. Now scrabble has their stuff all over the place. I'm sure most of the major game companies have put up trademarks all over the place for all those games they manufacture, whether or not they intend on making a "mobile" version of the game. I think Mattell should pay that guy who developed the game for his hard work, pay him to improve it, then pay him royalties for when they release it to the market themselves.
Thank you Ryanlashway
Stumbled upon this forum while looking for skipbo. Thank you so much uploading it! I can't seem to figure out how to add to the thanks meter. Would be happy to do so.
Thanks a lot!
Thanks a lot!

[Q] Unexpected death, how can I manually sava with touch rec/usb

I was playing with a new app yesterday and I am now stuck on beats screen, about 3 hours worth minimum...
I have access I think to all my sd card as I changed these not too long after installing arhd.
Can someone please tell me if I can get through the boot screen in some way using recovery touch, or manually back up my important data before I re rom it.
I have a backup, but I have since saved new contacts and bought games that are not backed up yet, and they weren't through google play, they were through gamesoft and ea directly. Thats the only things I am worried about losing everything else is moot in reality.
But I would like to at least try to save the apps themselves.
Please help ASAP.

do a backup in 4EXT ..it will save your current rom completely ..with all the data ..and then after re roming it ( i mean flashing it ) you can just do a advanced restore and just restore /data section
Will this not restore the settings to as they are now, ie not working.
The app was a system font changer, so it had super user permissions...just worried it won't work right...and I will still lose data.
I will do a back up now, but if you know where the data is on card that I need to keep please share this also.

Something is messed up in your /system partition, restoring /data should be fine. Your contacts are synched to your Google account so don't worry about that.
Another solution is to re flash your rom direct over your current broken rom without doing any wipes beforehand, that should also work.
Sorted, thanks.

Google backup fails on Nexus 5

Hi guys.
Sorry in advance in case of double thread, I looked around but didn't find anything similar.
Recently my Nexus 5 sends me this daily alert: "backup failed. It's been 3 days since last backup". If I click on this notice, it sends me to the backup settings page, and starts a new backup attempt that freezes at the very first step.
Every setting seems correct to me, and I'm at my wit's end.
I am waiting for a new device, so it would be great updating my data backup, so I could restore everything in my new phone simply by logging with my Google account.
I can send screenshots, but they're in Italian.
Can anyone help me?
Thank you all.
take Titanium backup always works. 1st try Syncing the account like app data and stuff then manually backup!
Thanx for your suggestion. I should root the device in order to use Titanium, right?
Anyway, I woud like to undertsand what's wrong in Google backup anyway, if anyone else can help.

Need help restoring phone after reset. Reset went fine, but didn't restore. (Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017)

[Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) Android OS 8.0]
Hi, I backed up my phone to both Samsung backup and to Google Drive. I did a factory reset but it never restored. I was about to leave on a cruise and was kind of SOL.
The Samsung backup seems to be toast. Unless it keeps old backups and there's a way to access then, that way won't work as it's overwritten the backup with the newly reset phone.
I also backed up to Google Drive. I can even look at the files in the drive and there are 2 files that start with "takeout" and if you open them you see android files inside.
I just don't know how to restore from these. The file has the date on it, which is 2022, which is before my cruise. (Why am I so late asking? Caught covy and then got long haul..)
All I really care about is my text messages. My contacts would be great too, but I may have that on my PC. If the Google Drive backup doesn't work out I did save a bunch of my phones data to my PC manually. I know much of the OS folders show 0 files, but in some cases if I dug through some of the folders I would find files. I just have no idea if one of them would be my text messages.
I don't really understand what it is that I'm not getting. The instructions say to just go to the backup and click on it to restore it. Uhh no, that isn't working. :/
Thanks, I really hope I'm not SOL here.
A Factory Reset ( AKA Hard Reset ) only affects user data ( included apps ) , means all those added to phone since its 1st startup gets deleted / removed. That always works well on all Android phones.
Wondering why you want to play back the bad backups made?
I really only need the text messages and the contacts if I don't actually have a csv (sp?) file of them.
For the backup, I told it not to save the photos or programs. I have a list of the apps I didn't uninstall, and the photos on my PC. I think the reset, plus no apps saved will fix things.
Can I just restore the texts? Or, is it possible that one of the files I saved has them?
Thanks

Do you know I would be able to do what I mentioned in the post above this one? Still stuck.
Thanks
Hi, sorry to post again but I'm hoping the forum tells you that I'm replying to your message as I can't DM you.
[Added info] As I said above, I didn't backup the apps, just the texts and such, so a reset and restore should help. Even if it doesn't at least I can save the texts and contact list.
I still haven't found a solution to this. The Google app shows a restore that's also after the reset, BUT, I also have what is clearly a restore from before the reset. I don't care what jankcraft magic I have to do. How can I restore to that restore point? I have a copy on my PC. Can I tell the phone that I'm transferring data from a different phone on to this phone? Same phone of course.
The file on Google Drive starts with the word takeout and then has the date and time and is in a zip.
Nobody is posting any response to this but you, and someone else who pointed me to this section of XDA.
[Minor Edit] The files are "takeout1" and takeout2" with the date and times after them. The "takeout2" is the one from after the reset. Takeout1 is from before. If I delete "takeout2" will Google Restore see "takeout1?"
I'm dying here.
Thanks
DM
