[Q] Enabling BLN to work with SMS Notifications - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727
Hey Fellow Galaxy S2 Skyrocket modders,
I am a rookie at this and definitely not a developer but like to mess around with my phones.
I have BLN running and currently it is only flashing for phone calls and emails.
I love the service but would really love it if it alerted me when I had a Text Message.
What should I be doing to enable that.
I am running 2.3.5 Stock w/ Rom Racers [KERNEL] AT&T Stock-ish 0.1 BLN/USB-OTG/NFS/FUSE/init.d/adb root/boot animation.
If anyone has any suggestions for me let me know please.

Bln won't work with the stock messaging up due to the fact the phone "wakes" up when you get a text (the screen turns on). You need to tweak the service.jar for it to work or you can do what I did, replace the mms.apk with the cm7 version. You'll get bln notification for texts this way

in GOsms settings, make sure you uncheck "screen wake"
Would anybody be able to elaborate on how exactly to tweak services.jar. I've actually been researching this very thing over the past few days but can only find different ROMs saying they include a patched services.jar. Is the services.jar a ROM/phone specific file? Like, could I just pull one from another ROM or no? Or what would be the process of tweaking it?

Using BLN with Stock SMS Application
This post is probably a little late, but I just would like to post a workaround that I found on another forum that allows you to use BLN LED notifications with the original Samsung SMS app.
If you download "SMS Popup" from the market, you can actually force a workaround. Since SMS Popup isn't a standalone SMS app, you still use the original SMS app to write and read text messages. SMS Popup only extends the original SMS app by handling the notification process, and it has an option for LED notification. Here's a quick guide on the settings I'm using to make this work:
1) On the original SMS app go to "Settings" and scroll down to "Notifications" and uncheck it, since you don't want duplicate notifications which would result from having SMS Popup also handling your text notifications
2) Download "SMS Popup"
3) In SMS Popup, make sure it is enabled, then press "Notifications" then "Default Notifications"
4) Make sure "Enable Notifications" is checked then scroll down to "Blink LED" and check that (It says blink, but in my experience it doesn't matter what the following settings are for the color and duration of the blink, BLN controller overrides those settings. I.e., if you tell BLN to never activate blink, your notification will just be static LED lights. And obviously you can't change the color.)
5) You should be all set! Just make sure your settings within BLN controller are all set up and ready to go.
Since I much prefer the looks of the stock SMS app over GoSMS and Handcent, this is the ideal solution that meets my needs. The only quirk/upside (depending on your tastes) is that for some reason when the phone is locked and I receive a text, the screen no longer lights up offering me a shortcut to the message. This might be a necessity for BLN to function and I don't know if you can fix that, but coming from a Nokia N8 where the time and all notifications were displayed at all times on the OLED screen, a no button glance at my phone has to tell me if I've missed an event or not.
From my understanding of how BLN controller works (which admittedly is extremely shallow), BLN controller intercepts any signals that would route to the notification LED and sends it to the capacitive buttons at the bottom of the phone. So any application that has the capability of using notification LEDs should theoretically activate BLN but since on the skyrocket and the Tmobile T989 Galaxy SII (the phone I'm using) there is no built in LED, Samsung removed the notification option on the SMS app. So to circumvent it, all you need to do is use an app designed for universal access and isn't customized for a phone with no LED notification lights. This workaround should work with any phone so long as it's rooted, has a kernel that supports the BLN mod, and has installed the BLN controller from the market.

I don't have "Show a Popup" enabled. Depending on your setting under "Additional Settings" in the main menu where it says "Screen On for Popup", your phone might turn on when you receive a text message and show that popup, which would, in turn, disable BLN. BLN has to have the screen off to work so anything that results in the screen turning on after receiving a text message will disable BLN. If you receive a text and your screen doesn't light up and you still can't get BLN to work, double check your BLN is turned on under BLN controller.
BLN works pretty good with sms on Alien 5.5 (with "- Stock-ish kernel with custom ramdisk and BLN (disables ro.secure) ").
But the bln control app only keeps LED notification on for "one screen on". So, if you get frequent texts the light won't stay on except for the first one.
Anyone know if the paid version lets it stay on for more than one text? I've tried some of the "market app solutions" but nothing has helped.

I think what you're referring to is the test section of BLN which only means you can test the BLN notification setup you have and it will last until the next time you turn on your screen (which is what you want a test to do, right?). I don't think it's really a feature thing that you're thinking of because BLN only lasts until the next time the screen is turned on. Anyways, I have the paid version and there's no option along those lines.
I've been trying to figure this out for weeks and gave up. Tried your method and works perfect. Thanks for the instructions and heads up.

yeah i found the issue, untick "Screen On for Popup" that resolved the issue and bln kicked on for me.

Ah. Thank you for the correction, I've only recently realized the value of bln so I'm new at it (I'll hit the button when I'm back on my desktop). I realize it's a test function but I was hoping there was a connection to it doing the exact same thing in reality (comes on for first sms, but turns off and stays off after any following msgs, after screen notification pops up).
I'd love to be able to rely on bln--would keep me from being that person in the office with the loud annoying ring tone (or loud vibrate). My wife is a prolific texter. If she sends one message when I'm at the office and I see it, all is well. But if I turn the screen on and she's sent 6 messages that I haven't replied to, they usually escalate very quickly into "Why are you ignoring me?!...Answer me!!!".
I'd like bln to just stay on for multiple msgs and hold my marriage together. Is that too much to ask??

I'm not quite sure how the functionality that you're asking for is different than the functionality that BLN provides? How BLN works for me is if my phone is on my desk and I receive a text, the soft keys light up and stay lit up until I unlock my screen, at which point the LED notification turns off and whether the soft keys are lit or not depends on your system settings. When I lock my screen again, the notification is off because turning on the screen resets BLN. If I don't touch my phone after receiving a text, the soft keys stay on indefinitely (how I have the settings on BLN control app) until the next time I unlock my screen.
Isn't that what you're asking for? That the notification remains until you turn on your screen (check your phone)?

It lights up when the first text comes in. But when the second text comes the lights go out, even if I haven't touched the phone.

Ah I see, thanks for the clarification. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to replicate your problem. I had the same person text me multiple times and I had different people text me and I didn't touch my phone in between texts and the LED stayed on. I'm inclined to think that it's an issue with your ROM solution (you're running Alien right?). This workaround is for kernels that have the BLN functionality unlocked but otherwise haven't made any modifications to allow it to work with the stock SMS app. It sounds like (from what you said) that Alien has a workaround cooked in to allow BLN to work with the stock SMS app but it seems like Alien's solution doesn't quite work as it's supposed to if it turns off upon receiving a second text.
If BLN is very important to you (it is for me), I would suggest a different ROM/kernel solution that doesn't have a built in way to allow stock SMS to access BLN. If that's the case, and all it does is unlock BLN functionality, then this workaround should work for you.
Found a fix to get BLN working with SMS Pop. Just enable reminders after 1 minute, and under advanced disable screen on with reminders. Might also want to set notification sound to silent and have the stock sms handle the sound. After the first popup BLN won't work but after one minute BLN will blink.

Must be one of your settings is wrong. Mine always lights up again no matter how many texts I get one after another.

I'm not sure if you read the thread or not but I posted a solution that doesn't require a one minute delay. Although it only works for ROMs that don't have a cooked in solution, also as stated in the thread

[Q] Notification Screen Flash App?
Seeing as that the Captivate does not have a notification LED, it sometimes becomes a problem noticing new notifications. I just want to know if there is some kind of application that would flash the screen for a few seconds or so when the phone receives a new notification. I remember my iPhone doing that and it would be cool to see Android phones doing the same.

No, I know about the red dot on the screen thing. I dont really need that and besides, I believe it kills battery. I just want some app to turn the screen on for a few seconds when I get a notification.
Maybe go to the noled thread and see if he'll add that feature
my screen does flash when I get a message. It pops up in the notification bar and shows two lines of the message then shuts off.

I just tested it. When its locked and the screen is off it revives itself when I get and MMS or SMS. For emails it does not.
handcent sms will do it when you adjust the settings for the popup menu
Oh, maybe it only works for SMS and MMS notifications only. I would like the screen to flash on for every notification (Gmail, Feedr, AIM, etc). Kind of like how the iPhone worked with push notifications.
[Q] Wake up on notification
One thing that bugs me about the Captivate is that I frequently miss notifications while my phone is locked and set to vibrate (the vibrate is very weak for notifications). What I would like is a way to force the phone to "wake up" when any notification is received. By wake up, I mean for the screen to turn on for the default screen time out. Is there any way of making this happen with an app or a mod? The NoLED app is a good idea but a battery drain... I'd prefer something than only turns on the screen for a minute when the notification is received.

Try searching for mmf in the Market. It doesn't do the exact thing that what you want, but it will turn on the backlighting and flash the screen on/off when it receives sms, voice and gmail.

That is a good start... if he adds GVoice support, it would be almost perfect. EDIT - Did not realize you were the author! If there is a way to add GVoice support it would be awesome.
I've looked around, but couldn't find a method like they did with Gmail. I'll see if I can figure out indirectly watching GV's notification tones though.

Click to collapse Yeah I think the guy who wrote the NoLED app ran into similar issues with GV and other notifications... it not work in vibrate mode. Thanks for checking it out.
A blank/silent mp3 might work w/ vibrate... GV right now just doesn't seem to have a way of announcing that a new message is available like Gmail. I've put an updated version on the Market with notification tone monitoring. Seems to work fine with the limited testing I did with GVoice. It's disabled by default for now, so just toggle it on. hth
BLN Problems Nexus 4g NS4G Look Here!!! FIXED?
For all people using the Nexus S 4g (NS4g) that cant get Back light notification (BLN) Working this is what I have done for it to work. You must be rooted and must flash Netarchy Kernel for the 2.3.4. Im using 1.3.2 CFS Stock. I am also on the Stock Rom. First of all you should be able to use any version of the BLN Control APP. Do not try and use the "Test Section" of the BLN Control APP because it will not work and it will discourage you lol. If you want a quick test just go to "Activate BLN" on the BLN Control APP and then close the app. Press the power button on your phone so that the screen is off. Go on your home computer and send your self an email to your Gmail. Once you receive the email your lights should glow (Blink if you have the Pro Version) Now if you are using the Stock SMS app just turn your notifications on and as long as the screen is off when you receive your notification your lights should glow (Blink if you have the Pro Version) If you are using another SMS program such as Handcent of GO SMS there are some options you will need to tweak. I am using GO SMS. GO to settings, Notification Settings, enable notifications and then go to default notification settings, under screen settings UNCHECK where it says SCREEN ON. Then go down to LED Settings. Make sure BLINK LED is checked. You also may want to enable reminders just in case you turn your screen on. NEGATIVES ABOUT THIS MOD: Once the screen is turned on the glow or blinking will stop until you get another notification. Also if your screen was already on when you receive your notification it will not blink or glow when your screen automatically turns off. Also if you have another notification in another program that turns on the screen your glow will not work. Keep these in mind. If anyone knows how to fix these issues please let me know.

New Android user, Notifications Question
I just came from an iPhone 4 and this is my first Android phone (I've used a touchpad with CM9) and I have a fairly simple question which I can't seem to figure out. When you receive an SMS, or any notification for that matter, the phone will beep or vibrate but the screen remains black. How can I change the settings to have the screen light up and show the notification I just received like iOS does. I assumed this would just be a standard setting but after searching the phone and internet for about 10 minutes I gave up. Thank You and sorry for the noobiness. Plz dont kill me I swear im not trolling.

i'm guessing he means without 3rd party apps... in which case, i don't think it's possible - at least until we get custom roms. that's one thing i really miss about my GSII - that, and BLN. the LED on this HOX is so small, i tend to miss it, even if it's blinking.
So wait, your telling me there's no feature built into ICS that makes any sort of a notification pop up on screen on? That's absolutely ridiculous. What am I supposed to do for push emails? Just listen to the beep and have to go toggle the screen each time I get one to see if its important or not?

Click to collapse you should still get the notifications if your screen is on... i thought you were talking about making SMS and emails light up the display on your screen when the screen is off and you're not using the phone. if you are using the phone, and you get an SMS or email - assuming you are not currently in either of those programs - you should still get a notification. if you are in fact talking about getting the screen to light up when you receive SMS or email and the screen is off... then yeah, unfortunately, you just have to hear the tone or feel the vibration, and if you miss that, look for the LED. eventually there will be support for making the screen light up, and even BLN (back light notification - where the capacitative keys light up when you receive a SMS or email) - but it's going to take custom kernels for that stuff to happen.

Click to collapse it is kinda bad... for now. once the bootloaders are unlocked, the real fun will begin, and this stuff will be no problem to implement into custom roms. just gotta be patient for a little bit.

If you missed the initial screen turn on you had to do exactly that. Toggle the screen. Before iOS 5 it was even worse. So calm down and explore your HOX. While you will have to toggle your screen, to make up for it you can customize your lockscreen to quickly allow you to see certain notifications. If you go to settings -> personalize -> lock screen style and select productivity you'll be able to keep track of your notifications extremely easily. Otherwise yeah, an easily installed, non-invasive app can quickly fix your problem. If a text makeover isn't what you want check out an app called SMS Flash. It's my favorite least intrusive UI notification pop up. You can't reply from it like you could from SMS Popup or Go SMS Pro pop up notifications, but it does show you them and is slightly customizable.

This will turn on the screen and show you a preview of the SMS you just received. Also under Personalize > Lockscreen, then select the second option called productivity. This will list all of your active notifications on the screen similar to iOS. I also think you're being a bit nit picky about not having the screen light up for every notification. That is just as easy to miss as anything else. You have to be looking at the phone to see that. If I'm working on the computer the sound of a tone or vibrate is much more likely to get my attention. You turn the screen on to check the notification when you're ready... I don't really see a problem. Turning the screen on for anything other than incoming calls/texts seems like a waste of battery to me. Click to collapse pretty sure that SMS option won't make your screen light up when you receive texts... all it does is place the notification in a square in the middle of your lockscreen, so that when you hit the power button to unlock your phone, you see that square on your lockscreen, rather than having to look for the little icon in the upper left corner of your notification bar.
You get a notification up top....fyi you can pull down the notification bar down and check whatever on the lock screen. You don't actually have to unlock this phone to access notification bar. Love it. My infuse was not the same. Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
i actually prefer it NOT to be built in to the OS....i have this thing called CHOICE here in the Android world....and I choose NOT to have that feature baked in....i dont want my screen coming on at all, unless i tell it to.....i fail to see how having a third party app that handles this, a bad mark
Handcent SMS is a really good messaging app (better than default IMO). It has a setting that turns the screen on when a message is received. I'm not sure about email because I have never bothered to look for an alternative. @Pirateghost What if you still had the CHOICE to install a 3rd party app that kept your screen off? Everyone has different preferences, and the OP is upset it isn't available in the stock app. Seems reasonable to me.

Click to collapse i didnt say it was unreasonable, but the OP came off as it was a huge shortcoming and he couldnt believe that its not possible to have it implemented in ICS already...and installing a third party app is putting him out... just an interpretation of the text.....no clue how it was meant

Although it would be nice to make your own custom lockscreen style, that has like the weather and productivity combined

Click to collapse Agreed. Secondly, unless the phone is directly in front of you at all times and you're able to see the screen light up right then and there, then I don't see a difference. If the phone is in your pocket and the screen lights up but you failed to hear the notification, you're still screwed. Just my .02 Sent from my HTC Desire HD using XDA
Notification sounds and LED settings
I can't seem to get them to work the same way it's been working for me on my GS4. I am trying to get custom sounds/led for contacts in SMS (something hangouts doesn't offer). First off ringtone and notification volume level are tied so that's a problem. I worked around that. Second, I can't get the notification LED to work consistently in go sms or light flow. Even the LED test in light flow only works for one color and not all the time. Any help on settings that I may have missed or app I can install to fix this? I finally got vibration to work for SMS when Ringer volume is not set to vibrate (through light flow). Rant: Lame that's it's not a system option. Thanks.

Click the 3 dots on the top right. Select 'settings'. Select 'SMS'. Notification sound is right there...? I use LEDBlinker lite (free) and it seems to work properly (just wish I could change led blink rate/duration).
Sorry if I wan't clear, but settings on a per contact basis. I looked at the Hangouts option and it appears to be global.
