Notification sounds and LED settings - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I can't seem to get them to work the same way it's been working for me on my GS4. I am trying to get custom sounds/led for contacts in SMS (something hangouts doesn't offer).
First off ringtone and notification volume level are tied so that's a problem. I worked around that.
Second, I can't get the notification LED to work consistently in go sms or light flow. Even the LED test in light flow only works for one color and not all the time.
Any help on settings that I may have missed or app I can install to fix this? I finally got vibration to work for SMS when Ringer volume is not set to vibrate (through light flow). Rant: Lame that's it's not a system option.
Thanks.

Wha? Open hangouts. Click the 3 dots on the top right. Select 'settings'. Select 'SMS'. Notification sound is right there...?
Some people have reported that lightflow isn't working properly already, maybe try another app? I use LEDBlinker lite (free) and it seems to work properly (just wish I could change led blink rate/duration).

Sorry if I wan't clear, but settings on a per contact basis. I looked at the Hangouts option and it appears to be global.
Edit: LEDBlinker is at least able to test all the LED colors so I know they are there and working.

Any idea when light flow and dashclock will be updated to work with 4.4 and the N5?

Lightflow works perfectly for me.
I'll give it a shot. The first several reviews say it doesn't work. Haven't personally tried it.

for the guys who have light flow working, is your hangouts notifications working? everything works fine for me except hangouts.
Dash Clock works fine for me, but Lightflow doesn't seem to. The test option doesn't work. Is this the same for you guys who have it working otherwise?
I emailed the Lightflow dev. he said there are some hangouts issues, but he is working on fixing them ASAP. However, for my purposes it works fine. I just set all hangouts to one blinking color.
As for dashclock, how do I add it to a lockscreen? On 4.3 I had to create a new lockscreen and all that jazz, but I'm not able to do that on 4.4???
Edit: I know how to put the dashclock on a homescreen, but how do I place it on a lockscreen in 4.4.

Test works for me. All works except splitting up hangouts notifications and having the LED be "always on". Dev says he is working on it. Here is the message I got from him:
Hi
I'm working on it, although most things should already work. I know sms doesn't with the new Hangouts integration and the "always on" led doesn't work on the nexus 5.

Thanks, I forgot there was a lockscreen widget setting under security. Its odd.
Also, it looks like Light Flow works, unless you have any notification set to "always on." The devhas confirmed this and he said he has a workaround coming.

It doesn't work for me with stock options. Even deleted data and ran it again. Enabled/disabled/enabled the LED light in Android's display settings but no difference. There's something going on, with what seems an equal number of people reporting it's buggy or it plainly doesn't work, and people for whom it works well.
Doesn't work for me either, I've tried everything. It works when I do the test LEDs, but doesn't seem to work with any notifications. I don't have always on, but I have a custom interval for the pulsing, could that be the issue?
FYI sometimes "test" won't work but the app itself nevertheless works fine.
So don't assume that just because the test feature isn't working that the app itself is not working.

If it's purple, I know which one you're talking about. To fix it, disable SMS recieved notifications. You'll still get the light when receiving sms from Hangouts.

Is Notification LED Supposed to Light with Hangouts SMS?

I have been receiving plenty of texts, but I don't see the notification LED coming on. I downloaded LightFlow and the test works, so it definitely isn't a hardware issue with the LED. I also have "Enable Notification Light" checked in Display settings. Am I missing something else?
Try led manager. Works great for me plus you can add apps with different colors.

@mrro82 it would be nice to see a color for a hangout vs a color for SMS/MMS.

I believe what he was saying is that it would be nice to see a separate color for each one. i.e. say blue if he receives a SMS/MMS, and green if someone tries to get a hold of him through Google Hangout.
As for the LED with text messages... it works for me, but i will say that there's a BIG gap between blinks. Maybe you're just used to seeing a more rapid blink than what is set up by default on the N5?

Since sms and mms are combined with hangouts, Idk if they can be separate colors. Or regular hangout messages for that matter. The blink rate is about the same as it was on my S4.

There is currently an issue with Light Flow so that if you have "always on" setting for any LED notification it can mess up the other notification light settings (specifically hangouts).
An update should be out soon, according to the dev. For the time being, disable any notification you have set to "always on" and make it blinking or something (or off).
Off the train of thought here, but Google Voice uses a green notification light by default.. Not sure what makes it different except maybe the app is never updated.

You're right. I would like to see two (three is a stretch) different light colors available within Hangouts for hangouts, SMS and MMS. That said (and completely unrelated) Hangouts is a bit crowded with everything in there. I'd like to see a filter or a swipe to see only Hangouts OR SMS/MMS, almost separate inboxes. If this concept went live, I'm willing to bet they could be recognized as separate notifications and therefore different colors. I'm actually playing with my GNex/4.4 with the MMS.apk from 4.3 AOSP to determine how I will setup my N5.
Not working for me as well
Update. It does work for hangouts. You just have to wait a bit for the LED to light up. Don't know how long exactly, but certainly more than 10 seconds.
I seem to have the same problem as the OP. LED works for emails, but not for hangouts. I'd rather not have an extra app running and don't really mind the white LED. Curious to know what might be causing the issue.
I didn't have LED notification for Hangout SMS too. I used Xblast Tools (Xposed module, needs root) to set it up. Works great now.

They work if that's what you're asking. Light Flow and Light Manager are the two I tested. Definitely prefer LF of the two.
Light manager seems to work for sms but not email. Always on also does not show email notifications. Arg!

LightFlow is not working for me. Did you enable the LED in the display settings and did you enable or disable the workaround for Samsung?
I have been emailing the dev for light manager. in order to get it to work, you need to turn on the 5.1 workaround in the apps settings and you have to let it wake the screen for notifications. then the led colors work correctly. one thing that does break is you can not longer expand the gmail notifications in the notification pull down shade. he said he doesn't have an S7 yet to test on but is getting one.
LED Blinker Work correctly
I didn't install light manager yet. I'm just using signal for SMS and changing color of LED in its settings. inbox is blue and I guess missed calls would be the same blue default. Works for now. Also charging is red by default and green I think when charged...

LED Blinker works, but has the same problem that all of the other LED notification programs have....The Gmail notification icon in the status bar will not auto clear after reading email. It must be cleared manually. Light Manager does the same thing, and according to the developer, it is an issue with Android 6.0

Does Light Flow NotificationFunction for the LED's

I wanted to see if anyone is using Light Flow for your Led and sound notifications.
It works fine. Light notifications are turned off by default. I'm using light flow legacy
Thank you !
Just downloaded it and tried it...not impressed. The colors are a bit off. They were great on my S6, but it looks like the LED on the Pixel has some sort of filter or something over it and it dulls the colors.
Pixel has LED support by default. You don't need to use crazy hacks like lightflow to make it work.

You do if you want to actually customize it at all.
When I installed light flow. My gmail notifications sounds, lights and vibrate settings functioned as intended. I had many issues with getting full functionality with any of sms notifications. I contacted the developer about my sms notification issues and his replay with a work around works.
This can be used with any app, BUT YOU NEED TO FOLLOW EACH STEP FOR EACH CONTACT or Notification.
From the developer: 10.25.16
I'd recommend the following.
1. remove the contact specific notification you have set up and the standard text message notification.
2. get a text message from the contact you want specific notifications for and don't yet read it.
3. go into lightflow, notification settings and press "+" and select from all installed apps and select messenger.
4. Press "+" again and select from an outstanding notification and select the unread text message and select it and click add.
5. Find this notification and click on it (then press the pencil icon in the title to give it a meaningful name)
6. Enable the "notification person matches..." switch
7. Finally in notification settings click on the 3 lines with an arrow button at the top and drag the contact specific notification above the default messenger notification.
Messenger and be replaced with any app that you want notification from.

Replacing apps with ones that support the control of custom LED notifications isn't a viable solution for most people. How would you replace the Phone app if you want custom notifications for missed calls and voicemails?
You don't seem to have any interest in helping the OP, so I am done here.

It certainly is viable, especially when doing so increases functionality.
And yes, you CAN replace the phone application. There are HUNDREDS of alternatives.
Do we have to use Legacy?
I am using the regular one, and it is not working for me.
Did you have to set any special config options? In the device settings page?
Edit: I realized hiding notifications for LightFlow in the settings app (to hide the persistent icon) disabled the LED, so switched to legacy.

Light Manager

I have never used Light Manager before, but the idea of different colored lights for different types of notifications sounds useful. I have tried to get it to work for the past 3 days, but I can't find a combination of options that will work.
Is anyone using it successfully who might let me know what their configuration is?
I appreciate your time.
Did you remember to turn on the LED in your phone settings? You go to Settings>Notifications>Tap the gear in the upper right. Make sure you turn that switch on.
When you first open light manager it will prompt you to allow notification access which can be found under your phone's settings>apps>little gear at the top right>special access>notification access. Make sure light manager is checked. (It asks you to set that up right when you first open light manager)
After that just it should start working. Go into light manager and start setting up your colors and stuff. You can test each notification you set up (just have to make sure to turn off your screen while the test is going on)

Oh ok awesome. I didn't try that mode but will give it another try with that mode enabled.
I also had some issues with LF. My gmail functioned as it should, but I could not use sms or other apps. The developer told me how he got things to function properly. I have had no issues sense. Here is what you need to do. Just change out the app you want for notifications.
This is the setup I use on my 5x and 6p and pixel. It also allows you to do similar for pretty much any app or for example switch when a particular word is in a notification so it's quite customisable.
Cheers
