Please do not hot link to my download. Link to the post. Thanks
I just finished BreakDroid my new all in one tool. I hope this will be a one stop to root many phones and tablets on Macs as well as install the android sdk and adb.
The new app is located Here at the website.
If you wanna buy me a drink for my time go Here.
Also don't forget to hit the thanks button if this helped you.

i got this:

Ok, I updated the script. I think it was a semicolon I accidentally put in.
Let me know if it works now.

I just downloaded the script and got the same error message.
Running OSX 10.6.8

----------

Everything should be fixed now. Sorry for the problems.
You should be able to run this over the old one without any problems.

I am having issues navigating my way through this. I am not new to rooting (Evo 4G, several iPhone versions) but this is my first attempt at a tablet and I am apparently missing something big time.
I am on a KF with 6.2.2 and a Mac (Lion OS) and have downloaded and installed the adb installer per this thread. I also have the BurritoRoot3.apk file sitting on my KF. However, this is where I get lost. When I click the app file on the KF it give me the "Please run /data/local/tmp ... BurritoRoot3.bin --root" message. Running this on my Mac renders "error: device not found" but I suspect the Burrito app must need to run through a process before sending it to the KF to do the actual root. As you can see, I am somewhat clueless but I once I have direction, I am comfortable carrying it out.
Can someone give me some best practices on where I am going wrong? Thanks!

It sounds to me like the USB.ini didn't transfer. adb should work right away. I have another installer that just does that. I will post a link in a couple minutes.

Here's the link.
http://goo.gl/ad1wQ

Fantastic. Thank you.

Still not there ...
Thx for posting the link to the auto-adb file--that seemed to work. However, I am still clueless as to a few things. #1 I still get the message about burritoroot3.bin so apparently I need to run the apk through something to be able to run it. I did chmod on the apk and although it changed the icon I am still unable to open it (i get the "which program do you want to use to open ..." message. #2 when i try to run burritoroot3 am I clicking on the file while looking into the KF with it plugged in or am I running it on my computer then moving it over to the KF? (I suspect the former). Thx again.

I'm not 100% sure I understand the question. You install BurritoRoot on the Kindle and open it then run the adb commands it tells you to.

adb
I'm sorry, I am having the same issues, I install burrito and it tells be to run a command line, just like the guy before me. I then installed the link that you posted. My question is: where do I open that link: KF or Mac? I tried both, re installed burrito, installed app and again, I get the same message. I have looked at other forums, and I still get lead to this post and I am having no such luck.
thanks for your help.

that great..........................................

All of the scripts I post are for the mac. If there are problems with BurittoRoot I'm not sure how much I can help. I will try though if you can give more info. I don't quite understad where you are having the problem.

So I install the SDK and put burrito on my KF. What is the next step to root it?

Google Search by Voice v1.4.1 install fails

Searched the forum and wiki and can't find anything on this.
Trying hard not be a 'compleet newb'....
Problem: I've tried to download and install the latest update (v1.4.1) to Google Search by Voice. It fails saying it is not correctly signed. I am not able to uninstall it via the Market software. The existing version is present and still works.
I was thinking of manually uninstalling it and then attempting a re-install from the market. Has anyone had any success getting this update to install on CM 4.2.7.1?
I'm running Cyanogen 4.2.7.1 on my HTC Magic 32B, applied over the flashed and clean-installed 1.6 rooted base - no CM Updater. (Seems to give a better, more stable result - may affect the behaviour of the update).
this stupid error happens because of the test keys or the userdebug keys thay cyanogenmod uses. I would download it somewhere online and use adb to replace the old one wiht the new one. It should work.
Yes I have the same problem with same model phone etc. etc.
I understand the workaround will be the same as Google maps 3.2.1 update but I cannot find up to date "Google search by voice" apk. I was wondering if anyone knows a source that mirrors up to date apps, or could even link a tut about how to get apk's copied out of the phones /tmp folder?
Thanks
I'll check out the package name in the Applications settings and see if I can find it anywhere or somehow capture it. Later....won't have any time until this evening.

That's great I didn't think of that, ill whip out those quotation marks and asterisks for google too. Also later...... 00:20 is not the right time for this....... so tempted......!!!
I fixed the maps.apk problem by going into adb and uninstalling maps.apk and then removing all traces of it. Then I went to marketplace and i downloaded it as normal and it now works perfectly.
Try that with voice search
Do we know what the package name is? Usually something like "com.google.android.apps.xxx" Could try uninstalling through adb. Then re-download from the market?
hello, could u plz share the installer? its not available on the marketplace in my country.
thanks very much
success
Ok, I managed to get Google Search by Voice updated to 1.4.1. I'm no pro and it took ages but it works.
Could a mod advise whether I am allowed to post a link to the apk?
I would be happy to post the steps i took but its not something i have done before and worse still, i used cmd not putty (noob error #1!). So the commands and the order i used them in are lost.
Should have used ubuntu..............
the concept consisted of updating the app and simultaneously using this command while it was downloading
Code:
cp /cache/downloadfile-9.apk /sdcard/download
"9" is only because it is the 9th apk i have downloaded and once the install fails the OS deletes the apk.
(for anyone else it would be different. go into /cache and type ls at the prompt to see what your next number will be)
then rename downloadfile-*.apk to VoiceSearch.apk, remove the original in the phone using adb and replace with the updated app.
I will post again tomorrow with clearer instructions but would much rather post a link to the apk I got, if it is permitted
hmmm. doing an 'adb shell rm /system/app/VoiceSearch.apk' and reinstalling from the market still gives you the unsigned error?

yes it will still give an unsigned error.
that is why you need to copy the apk which android market downloads to /cache before it deletes it, i copied it to /sdcard/download. then install via adb afterwards.
you have to manual install the apk to avoid unsigned error, once you have done this any future updates through market will be fine. Maps updated fine to 3.3 after i manually installed 3.2.1
How?

I downloaded the VoiceSearch.apk file and adb pushed it into /system/app on my phone and it works perfectly. The market sees it as installed and valid.
But I inspected my "normal" load phone (which has voice search) and nowhere could i see anything resembling "VoiceSearch.apk".
Where is this file on an un-rooted phone?

AdFree Hosts file

Since we currently can't write to /system while Android is running, the AdFree app is unfortunately unusable. However, here is the hosts file that the app supplies you with, so you can still put it into your phone manually.
Download the attached file, unzip it and place the hosts file on your sdcard. Then, open up a command prompt, load up your recovery menu (using the instructions in toastcfh's guide) and type:
Code:
adb shell
mount /system
mount /sdcard
cp /sdcard/hosts /system/etc/hosts
exit
Now you're AdFree
As in AD free while on the web only? Or does this block the ADs that are displayed within certain programs? Like Spare Parts for example.

Everytime the phone goes to download an ad, it gets blocked. So in both the browser and inside apps.
a) not development
b) i already did this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695196&highlight=adfree
I'm guessing this requires root?
Also, those commands can't work AFAIK, because mount needs two arguments.
Or am I missing something here? I'm new.
I have actually had 0 problems running adfree right out of the box. Installed, ran and bam no ads. Didn't have to modify nothing through ADB.

U running 2.2? BC I see lots more adds since 2.2, it blocks some but not most.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
You know, to my embarassing discovery, I never noticed (as I found this thread from google) but this is the forum specifically for EVO.
I'm running a DX (so 2.1), so that may be the problem. But still, I wouldn't think such things would be different in the OS. Guess the package it differently. Oh well. Not gonna bother rooting my toy just yet, hehe. Sorry bout the confusion.
AdFree is working perfect on CM7 nightly 23 & 25 & MikFroyo 4.5 but it does not work if you have BusyBox 1.18.3 but works perfect with BusyBox 1.17.1. I did not test other versions but I think the problem is related to BusyBox 1.18.3 by today 03/19/11.
Still there are ads running on some apps
like moneycontrol, and more.

Its not updated, try absolute system tools from the Android Market. It downloads an updated script
If anyone is interested I created an app (Warning: requires ROOT) that allows you to enter one or more URLs and/or file paths and merges them and installs them as hosts. You may find the source-code here: https://code.google.com/p/android-ad-blocker/
I'll try to fix bugs for it but I can't promise I'll have time.
Edit: I made a new version because the old one had some issues transferring large files. You may find it here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8443626/android-ad-blocker.apk

x2 im confused
@ acme64 : Some people in market comments complained that it doesn't work fine anymore and it's a root app with closed source. Since it was simple to write a similar tool I did it for myself mainly.
@ Don74y3 : The way to use the application is to put a URL to a hosts file. You may use for example the one in the screenshot (I can't put the link here because of forum rules but use Google to search for "hosts file winhelp2002" and from the first link, take the address from "To view the HOSTS file in plain text form") and then click "Apply". What the program does is get that file and put it in your (rooted) Android phone. That file in turn lets the phone avoid domains that serve ads or malware. The app can take more URLs and merge them, but that's not necessary. After clicking "Apply" it is recommended to reboot the phone to make sure the changes go into effect. You will see that the pages load faster and without ads.
P.S. I'm not affiliated with the guys that make that hosts file, though I'm grateful for their work.

Hi, the programs tries to figure out where the /system partition is mounted on your phone (this is because it has to switch it to read-write, put the hosts file and switch it back to read-only). I wrote the program to parse the output of the "mount" command.
Unfortunately it seems that on your phone the output is far different than what I expected. I don't know how to fix this unless you can send me the output of that command on your phone - by PM for example. To do this use adb (try to Google for how to get Android Debug Bridge) with your phone connected: run "adb shell" from a command prompt and at the shell prompt type "mount" without quotes and send me the output - at least the line that contains "/system".
Hi,
I have a different question.
I used adFree but then decided that I actually wanted see the ads on my apps.
I removed AdFree but the ads are still gone.
Is there a way to bring them back?

Why not use the andriodcentral wonder machine? This will load the apk for you....
thanks i will try that tonight and let you know how it goes
i downloaded the .apk and tried to install it.
I get to summary and click "install".
Next it says
"Replace application
The application you are installing will replace another application.
All previous user data will be saved"
Kinda weird because i'm using super rooter and though that stuff was removed...but figured i screwed something up on the tibu restore of my apps and maybe restored it somehow (even though its no where in my phone).
I click okay. I see the regular install screen you'd see from a .apk if you are installing it that tells you what it has access to. I click install. it acts like it instals for a split second then says:
"aplication not installed". all i can click is done.
any ideas?
If you use the Android Central sideloader you will see this error.

[Tutorial] Proscan PLT-7035-PL Root and install GAPPS

Rooting and installing Google Play on the Proscan PLT7035-PL ** UPDATED **
*** Disclaimer ***
I am not responsible for bricked tablets, voided warranties, crashed computers and/or global thermonuclear war! This is what worked for me if you are unsure of anything in the following steps STOP NOW! There is no factory rom released for this tablet. If you brick it your possibly stuck until if and when they release an update!
These instructions assume you are competent to do the folling: get files on and off of your device using the mass storage driver, able to edit and understand changes to inf files, use command prompt, edit system user files and have enough patence to read all of the steps without skipping any. There are a few gotcha's that if are skipped will leave you pulling your hair out. Also these instructions are written for Windows. If your using Linux you shouldn't need my help anyways ..

This tutorial may also work on other Chinese generic tablets. You would only need get the hardware vendor and product ID's from the device info for step 2. For the purpose of this post I wont be getting into that but the information is out there.. GOOGLE IS YOUR FRIEND
Introduction
Its likely if you are reading you have recently visited Big Lots and scored a $69 7" tablet. Only to get home and find virtually NO information on rooting it or installing Google Play or GAPPs. I know I was in that boat but after a few hours of messing around I got it. I am writing this to hopefully help the hundreds of others I see out there asking for help on this.
Step 1 Download Stuff (Things to round up before you even think about starting)
Root with Restore by Bin4ry v15 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460 .** UPDATE ** I attached the version I used to this post
ADB Drivers - You have several options here, milage may very.** UPDATE ** I attached USB drivers to this post. I had to seperate the 64 and 32 bit drivers to get the files under the 8 mb limit for uploads
install android SDK http://dl.google.com/android/android-sdk_r21-windows.zip and follow instructions to get the google usb drivers. Search XDA there are several guides, I couldn't find the one I used as of writing this article but there are many out there.
Search google and find a zip with just the ADB drivers.
Download Super One Click Root and use the drivers in the tools directory of the zip. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
Root Explorer - quick way to move and remount file systems rw with ease. I used v2.13.1. Google around and find an APK to install, just be careful there is another completely differnent package out there called "rooted explorer" it may work but I have not tried it. ** UPDATE ** I attached the version I used to this post
Google Apps for ICS - gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip is what I used from http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip ** Update ** I replaced the URL with a direct download link from goo.im enjoy!
**NOTE** SUPER ONE CLICK ROOT WILL NOT ROOT YOUR TABLET SO DON'T BOTHER TRYING!
Step 2 install and configure your ADB USB Drivers (Let the fun begin)
Extract your zip file containing the ADB USB drivers or Install the Android SDK and follow instructions on how to use the SDK manager to download the lastest drivers from google.
Once downloaded edit the inf file (usually named android_winusb.inf)
Add the following under the [Google.NTx86] heading and again under the [Google.NTamd64] heading: (one is for 32bit systems and the other is for 64 bit Systems)
Code:
;ProScan plt-7035
%SingleAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_2207&PID_0010
%CompositeAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_2207&PID_0010&REV_0222&MI_01
After saving and exiting. Turn on USB Debugging on your tablet. It is under Settings => Developer Options and is the first option at the top make sure it has a check in the checkbox. Exit the developer screen by pressing back or the home key and plug in your tablet to a usb port on your computer using a micro-USB cable.
Device detection should at this point detect a few devices but at least 1 will fail without drivers. Possibly more on XP systems..
Under Device Manager => Other Devices you should have a device called "PLT7035-PL" use the usb drivers modifed above to install the ADB USB Drivers.
*** Important Note ***
At this point even with the ADB Driver installed ADB will not see the tablet. We have to create or edit the file c:\users\whatever your username is\.android\adb_usb.ini
If you have already run ADB at any time on your system the file and directory should already exist. If not you will need to create the directory and the file.
on a single line simply add this to a blank line in the file and save and exit:
0x2207
This tells ADB to look for that vendor code. (if you allready have ADB on your computer 'adb devices' should now show your tablet.
** UPDATE ** This is still necessary even if using the drivers attached to this post!

Extract Root with Restore by Bin4ry v15 to the directory of your choosing.
From explorer on your pc double click the RunMe.bat and select option one.
This particular root uses the system restore function to gain root access. If everything goes right you should get a prompt on the table to restore an image.

Press restore ON THE TABLET without entering a password or changing anything else and after a minute or two (maybe more) it should reboot.. Do some more stuff then reboot one more time and you should now have a rooted tablet.
Step 4 Copy root explorer and gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip to the internal storage of the tablet.
Make sure the tablet is plugged into your computer and turn On USB Storage.
Copy rootexplorer.apk and gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip to the Downloads folder via windows explorer and the removeable drive from the tablet.
Step 5 Install root explorer
ON THE TABLET: to applications => explorer => Internal memory => Download => rootexplorer.apk
This should bring up the apk installer and ask for permission to install rootexplorer. Follow the prompts until rootexplorer is installed.
Open root explorer. The first time you open it if everything is right you should get a prompt from SU to allow root access, hit grant. After that you might get a message that you need to close and reopen root explorer again, this is completely normal.
Step 6 Remount File Systems r/w

WASN'T THAT FUN!!?!?!
Ive tried this several times. It hasn't worked yet. Maybe I am doing it wrong, not sure. Ill keep trying but I am losing hope.
I am trying with a Proscan PLT7035-PL
worked ... Many thanks to amjtech ...
Here's how to do it:
Install Android SDK, then install Android SDK Tools, Android SDK Platform-Tools, Google USB Driver (download from google)
Install PdaNet for Android on PC.
Attach Proscan pad, check Settings->Developer options->USB debugging to on
XP install adb driver - if unsuccessful, need modify registry
regedit under HKLM/SYSTEM Permissions -> Advance, check replace permission entries on all child
(http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/252428-45-installation-failed-access-denied)
Install USBDeview, run to see usb device attached, get device ID of PROSCAN pad (0x2207)
Add device ID to file adb_usb.ini in c:\docume~1\<user>\.android, also add google's id:
0x2207
0x18d1
(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1479311)
Now device will show running
Install ICS Root Unlocker 1.0, run ... got rooted.
Download Root Explorer (2.21.1).apk, Google Play Store (3.8.16).apk, and gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip from 4shared
http://www.4shared.com/folder/k86VyEKK/_online.html
follow the rest of the instruction (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1993013)
... reboot proscan ... voila !!!
Help me!! please!!

Unfortunately as stated above there is no factory rom available for these tablets yet... I am looking into using rkflash or rkflashtool to download my rom prerooted so I have a backup and also can post a rooted rom for everyone. Most likely later this week I should have some time to figure out the rkflashtool and get it dumped.
I will post it here once it is done.
I'm going to say this now. I have a very busy schedule so I cannot guarantee when I will get this accomplished.
Also if this works for you please hit the thanks button.

Confused as heck !!
OK, I am confused as heck here. I have the SDK installed. I have the USB Drivers installed. The PC sees the phone just fine, I can browse the internal storage and the external sd card with no problem. Windows XP Device Manager shows Android Phone, and under that the Android Composite ADB Interface.
PDANet works with the phone, no problem. However, adb devices never shows the device, and the Root program cannot find it either. At this point, I'm stumped. Any ideas what I need to do? I have put the android_usb.ini file in c:\Documents and Settings\myusername\Android with the necessary hex codes for the device and for Google. I'm going nuts here!
I know ADB is installed properly, because I can plug my phone into the PC and run adb devices, and it's detected just fine. It's just this tablet it can't find.
FIX: Not as obvious as it might have been, but here is the solution to my problem. I used the Search function to find the adb_usb.inf file - umm... it's in .android, not android. Once I added those ids, everything was fine.
No Market?
Achieved root, copied over the system folder from the zip, but no market. Did I miss something?
What about Recovery?
Just wondering if there is a recovery option as yet? That would be so helpful!

Yeah, this happened to me too. And for some reason, when you go to the \system folder and look in apps there is another apps folder in there. I think there is something really odd going on with root manager possibly. I don't know what the deal is, but none of the Google Apps are running.
I've tried several older 4.0.x versions of GAPPS, and I will be danged if I can get any of them to work. I'm rooted OK, but that's all that worked thus far.
Good instructions! But failure... and then success
The instructions were great above! The pointer to the version of google play was bad, but I found this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1934441 and after using Root explorer to do the appropriate permissions at / and /system, and on the renamed file, it works!
---------- Post added at 06:17 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:06 AM ----------
Now that I got Google Play to work...
I am having an odd problem however - the installation of apps stalls at 0% for about 30 seconds, and then continues. And as the percentage is updated, I see app screens cycling. And little google play shopping bags start to stack up in my "task tray" area of the tablet.
Does anybody else have that problem? It's very annoying! It seems like the downloaded apps not only install but open, eating up precious memory.
Speaking of which, how is the flash memory used? (4 GB), and not having apps take up the 500 MB that's available?

It is 4GB shared. I haven't tried looking at the partition table.
There is only 2GB usable, it's on the TF card, I moved the apps there.
Not sure how to access the SD card to put apps there.

My GAPPS are working fine. I thought about killing that /system/system folder and manually placing the files via adb.
Try checking the permissions too, I think they need to be 644 or better.
I've put the Tablet away for now, I will tinker again later probably.

You have to extract the zip file, remount the file systems as rw and copy the /system folder from the zip into the / of the device so that all the files goto their proper places... if you have /system/system it was not copied correctly...
as far as those not getting ADB to reconize the tablet.. a) make sure you have usb debugging turned on and b) you put the hardware id in the adb_usb.ini file.. See the ** important note ** in Step 2!
Unzipping Files
I have read and followed your directions to download the files, but, my unit keeps saying it can not open any zip files.
Do you have any idea why it may say this or how to get around this problem so I can continue as instructed?
unzip on your computer and transfer over, or use root explorer

You can unzip them on your computer and then transfer them over, or use root explorer on your tablet. You'll have to hold your finger on the .zip file for a few seconds and then the unzip option pops up.
Well, everyone be careful! When my Google Play would not install properly, I tried to clean the tablet up, ie, put it back to its original condition. Somehow, I managed to cause something to crash, and from then on, the tablet won't boot past the Android startup screen, although I can adb into it and it is still rooted, etc. What I've got now is a project tablet - HOW TO UNBRICK THE BRICK.

try doing an ADB shell
then the following commands
su
wipe data
this will reset the user partition. I had something similar happen on mine.. BTW 'wipe all' will definitly brick your tablet so be carefull
If you still cannot get it I was almost in a car accident yesterday and my tablet went flying and broke the screen... If you confident with a soldering iron I now have a plt-7035 mainboard prerooted and playstore installed for sale for $25 including shipping.. it would involve soldering 6 wire and the wifi antenna if your up to it pm me,, I know its good as I was able to ADB into it and run su and wipe data to reset it..

Stuck uploading APK to Lineage 18 ROM (read to the end)

PreambleI oft find in various forums that people are so filled with the milk of human kindness that they just can't wait to help, ( or may gain a few more badges~) ignoring everything but the heading.
And in doing so ask foolish questions.
So, please DO READ to the end.
UPDATE
Thanks to @ jwoegerbauer I now know I can't install the Lantern APK via recovery. I must use ADB which I have previously tried but failed.
Obviously, therefore I do not know what I am doing with ADB.
My tasks focus now is to install Lantern APK via ADB with the devices , tools and systems already mentioned. (below)
Unless someone, somewhere knows where I can find a Lantern ZIP file which I can flash. (seems I am good at that now at least~)
Please DO read everything below ladies and gents, my sense of humour and patience does have a limit~
Mobile Device DetailsSamsung note 3 originally 9006 Chinese ROM
Rooted via Odin to 9005
Upgraded to Lineage ROM 18
Uploaded pico Gapps
Uploaded Magisk v23
Desktop Machine
Asus P5BSE / Core2 Duo E4400 @ 2.00GHz / 4GB ram / 2TB storage / Linix; Zorin Core 15.3
Project in briefTo install Lantern. (getlantern.org)
Lantern is usually installed via Google play store.
Google is blocked in China.
Downloaded Lantern APK to upload to phone via recovery from SD card.
Recovery does not show the APK in the SD card.
Stuck.
Further info - useful?During one of my many attempts to install Lineage following a blog, I wiped the disk in error.
I also suspect I removed the backup of the original Samsung system as when I tried to reboot, TWRP mentioned there was no O/S.
Nothing I could do restored the original.
What was it Macbeth said about being in blood stepped so far?
On my final install of Lineage 18 I seem now to have their Recovery, not TWRP.
I am happy with that, seems no big deal for me, I was able to successfully install the new OS + Gapps. And it is one less APP to install
I also have Magisk installed, the device is in dev mode and - seemingly rooted. (although the App does not explicitly say so)
Using a borrowed SIM card I can connect to the China mobile network system.
I now have a fully functional, working , English language device with Lineage 18.
Brilliant!
My last task is to figure out how to get the Lantern App sorted.
I have downloaded the APK from their official site, several others as well as a supposedly zip file.
Saved to SD card, visible when viewed on Linux, invisible when card is installed in mobile.
I really do not know quite how to proceed from here.
If I have missed anything, sorry, please ask.
Huge thanks to RAIZ from this forum for getting me to this stage and the guys who made Lineage 18 so darn easy to install and seemingly impossible to mess up.
And boy oh boy, believe me, I have really tried over the past few months~!

What recovery are you using? Have you tried different recoveries?
What version of twrp are you running?
An APK will never get installed via Recovery.
You typically install an APK ( sideload method ) by means of ADB.
Code:
adb devices
adb install <FULL-PATHNAME-OF-APK-ON-PC-HERE>
Yeah you could use adb sideload in twrp.

Do you have a link you can direct me to please as to how to do it via ADB in Lineage recovery as I did try that (side loading) via TWRP and it threw back an error. I can't recall but I think it was permissions or similar?
Sorry, I forgot to mention that in my post.
Thx for your constructive feedback - much appreciated.

I think the understandable answer is given here:
adb install - Android ADB Shell Commands Manual
adbshell.com
Of course it's required ADB got installed on Windows computer if not done yet: if not then you may use the installer script linked to in my signature.

I am not sure how this forum works, so it was more of a post to jwoegerbauer.
Anyway, even opening the folder with terminal and using adb install lantern-installer failed with a CLOSE error message. I guess that meant close as in shut not closes as in almost!
I can, using Lineageos recovery access ADP on my phone with the instruction: " now send the package you want to apply to the device with "adb sideload <filename>"
However that triggers a screed of data in terminal which, frankly, is well beyond my rudimentary level of comprehension.
I have tried following 3 other on line tuts which suggest using ADB on my computer. All goes well until the instruction: <adb devices> which returns:
$ adb devices
List of devices attached
In other words, computer can't find phone!
I initially tried it in DOWLOAD mode, with the usual "download in progress, do not disconnect source."
Then reading the tuts again, none mentioned download mode so I tried with just the device attached to the machine in normal phone usage mode. Checked that SAMSUNG was visible and I could open the folders but again failed. ( sorry I forget what that error message was)
So far the most positive has been the direct ADB via Lineageos, but I have no idea where to go from there.
It is knocking on 37* here, too hot to think so I am taking a break.
Thx for your latest efforts.
Cheers
P
OK Finally!
[email protected]:~$ adb devices
List of devices attached
438f904d device
[email protected]:~$ adb install /home/bicyu/Sam-upgrade/lantern-installer/lantern-installer.apk
Performing Streamed Install
Success
[email protected]:~$
I have read so many posts all end with the <adb devices> and on each one I see zilch.
So, for anyone else in this boat, here is my solution.
In developer OPTIONS on your LINEAGEos device scroll down to
DEFAULT USB CONFIGURATIONVery likely it is set to FILE TRANSFER - mine was.
Change it to USB TETHERING
Then enter < adb devices> in terminal.
You should then see your Android listed.
Proceed with: adb install <FULL-PATHNAME-OF-APK-ON-PC-HERE>
You should see a SUCCESS flag!
NOTES: This works in Lineageos ROM on Linux, ( Ubuntu / Zorin O/S)
I dunno about others.
You need to have dev options activated.
Change the USB setting back when done, otherwise it tends to mess up your Internet! (did mine anyway!)
This is the best background tut to ADB I found.
He talks about a USB3 bug which, apparently, creates the same problem - maybe THAT is your issue? It was that article which put me on the USB CONFIG train.
Hope this helps someone.
A REALLY HUGE thank you to jwoegerbauer for putting me
on the right track - wrong train, - but right track.
Cheers mate!
Glad to hear you solved it.
Only to have mentioned it, there is a workaround - as always because many ways leads to Rome:
Copy the APK of interest onto MicroSD-card, plug the card into phone, afterwards using any File Manager application that is installed on phone, navigate to the location on MicroSD where the APK file is located and finally double-click on the APK file: this will install the APK.
Yep! Well good luck
