AdFree Hosts file - EVO 4G Themes and Apps

Since we currently can't write to /system while Android is running, the AdFree app is unfortunately unusable. However, here is the hosts file that the app supplies you with, so you can still put it into your phone manually.
Download the attached file, unzip it and place the hosts file on your sdcard. Then, open up a command prompt, load up your recovery menu (using the instructions in toastcfh's guide) and type:
Code:
adb shell
mount /system
mount /sdcard
cp /sdcard/hosts /system/etc/hosts
exit
Now you're AdFree

As in AD free while on the web only? Or does this block the ADs that are displayed within certain programs? Like Spare Parts for example.

Everytime the phone goes to download an ad, it gets blocked. So in both the browser and inside apps.

a) not development
b) i already did this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695196&highlight=adfree

I'm guessing this requires root?
Also, those commands can't work AFAIK, because mount needs two arguments.
Or am I missing something here? I'm new.

I have actually had 0 problems running adfree right out of the box. Installed, ran and bam no ads. Didn't have to modify nothing through ADB.

U running 2.2? BC I see lots more adds since 2.2, it blocks some but not most.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

You know, to my embarassing discovery, I never noticed (as I found this thread from google) but this is the forum specifically for EVO.
I'm running a DX (so 2.1), so that may be the problem. But still, I wouldn't think such things would be different in the OS. Guess the package it differently. Oh well. Not gonna bother rooting my toy just yet, hehe. Sorry bout the confusion.

AdFree is working perfect on CM7 nightly 23 & 25 & MikFroyo 4.5 but it does not work if you have BusyBox 1.18.3 but works perfect with BusyBox 1.17.1. I did not test other versions but I think the problem is related to BusyBox 1.18.3 by today 03/19/11.

Still there are ads running on some apps
like moneycontrol, and more.

Its not updated, try absolute system tools from the Android Market. It downloads an updated script

If anyone is interested I created an app (Warning: requires ROOT) that allows you to enter one or more URLs and/or file paths and merges them and installs them as hosts. You may find the source-code here: https://code.google.com/p/android-ad-blocker/
I'll try to fix bugs for it but I can't promise I'll have time.
Edit: I made a new version because the old one had some issues transferring large files. You may find it here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8443626/android-ad-blocker.apk

Adfree works fine, Am I missing something? I just ran it, it updated my host file. I checked again and it said it's the latest version

x2 im confused

@ acme64 : Some people in market comments complained that it doesn't work fine anymore and it's a root app with closed source. Since it was simple to write a similar tool I did it for myself mainly.
@ Don74y3 : The way to use the application is to put a URL to a hosts file. You may use for example the one in the screenshot (I can't put the link here because of forum rules but use Google to search for "hosts file winhelp2002" and from the first link, take the address from "To view the HOSTS file in plain text form") and then click "Apply". What the program does is get that file and put it in your (rooted) Android phone. That file in turn lets the phone avoid domains that serve ads or malware. The app can take more URLs and merge them, but that's not necessary. After clicking "Apply" it is recommended to reboot the phone to make sure the changes go into effect. You will see that the pages load faster and without ads.
P.S. I'm not affiliated with the guys that make that hosts file, though I'm grateful for their work.

Unable to figure out system mount point.
Can you please help with this?

Hi, the programs tries to figure out where the /system partition is mounted on your phone (this is because it has to switch it to read-write, put the hosts file and switch it back to read-only). I wrote the program to parse the output of the "mount" command.
Unfortunately it seems that on your phone the output is far different than what I expected. I don't know how to fix this unless you can send me the output of that command on your phone - by PM for example. To do this use adb (try to Google for how to get Android Debug Bridge) with your phone connected: run "adb shell" from a command prompt and at the shell prompt type "mount" without quotes and send me the output - at least the line that contains "/system".

Hi,
I have a different question.
I used adFree but then decided that I actually wanted see the ads on my apps.
I removed AdFree but the ads are still gone.
Is there a way to bring them back?

[REF] Google Navigation Install on G1 (Dream) Running Cyanogen's ROM (any version)

LATEST AND LAST EDIT TO THIS THREAD:
Download the new maps from Google in the marketplace for Google Navigation. Works Android Phones running the 1.6 platform.
No need to follow these instructions anymore!
---------
#Thought I would make a thread with clarified instructions on installing the new Google navigation on a G1 running Cyanogen's ROM. There have been a lot of #problems with the instructions in the other thread since the files supplied (namely build.prop and build.trout.prop) are not correctly referencing each person's #setup correctly.
#Instead of pushing generic prop files onto your phone, you can simply edit one line in your build.trout.prop file found in the system directory on your G1. #Thanks goes to aad4321 who posted it.
#The edit is simply changing the ro.build.fingerprint line to:
#ro.build.fingerprint=verizon/voles/sholes/sholes:2.0/ESD20/17572:user/ota-rel-keys,release-keys
#You can pull this file, edit, remount, then push back onto your phone to allow you install the new maps.apk. You can find the new maps.apk file in the #attachment. You can also find batch files to do all of the above, but is only guaranteed to work on the 4.2.5 ROM. All other Cyanogen version users can use #these files as well if they replace the build.trout.prop file with their own, and then edit the line as above.
#This method will keep all your apps intact, and not cause any problems with marketplace (protected apps not showing), google voice (force closing), facebook #(force closing), etc as reported in the other thread.
#<EDIT 1>If you get the errror "Device not found," make sure you have USB Debugging enabled in settings (thanks kizer).
#<EDIT 2>After performing a rm command, if you get a statement about the directory or file not existing, all is fine. Those rm commands are just trying to #find all possible places the old maps app could be stored, and so if it doesn't exist, you don't have to worry about it. Just go on to the next step.
#<EDIT 3>If you don't see the navigate function, install google voice.
#0) Connect phone
#1) Unzip downloaded file
#2) Run Part 1.bat
#3) When prompted to press any key, do so; the phone will reboot
#4) When your phone is running again, run Part 2.bat
#5) When prompted to press any key, the installation process is done.
#6) Make sure GPS is enabled
#7) Open Maps and press OK
#8) Press Menu
#9) Press Directions
#10) Enter an end point
#11) Click Go
#12) Just under "Show on map", click Navigate.
#13) If prompted to install the voice codec, do so.

While I placed the files from his zip directly on my SDcard and used terminal to run the command, Junker's method appears stable. I have Google voice, protected apps in market, and functional Navigation. (can't answer for facebook, since I don't have an account.)
Note to someone who does not know shell commands...don't try and copy the ADB commands they are not the same. Know what you are doing before you do it.
Thanks for the post Junker02
i really dont get why there are like 325435412512 threads for this.
They should be condensed into 1.... and listed as separate options/ways to do it.
I had no connection then realized I didn't have USB debugging enabled.
Seemed to work fine.

I believe the methods listed on the other threads are incorrect, or are more complicated than need to be (and possibly breaks other apps). I only found this method buried in the think-tank post, and though it was suggested for the OP to fix the first post, it never was. Hopefully others who are on Cyanogen's ROM will appreciate the info.

I agree, the other threads over complicate it and cause problems for those who don't know what they are doing. If they learned how to do it themselves there would be less questions and complication.
But then again, now this is just another thread about nav. Really, they should all be locked and something like what is in the first post should be put in the informative links thread.
wanted to thank you for instructions, possibly a better forum wiulda been q&a, as I go there to find answers and help solve some =) other than that this does clear some things up such as the ro line. Like in the other post it says almost same thing but fails to mention the line to change. Etc..etc... this did catch my eye and I was was about to try another method for my buddies phone and this saved me of searching through a thread. My penies, again ty.

I had no problems, but I did it myself:
from scratch (no map mods, orig build.prop):
adb remount
adb pull /system/build.trout.prop build.trout.prop
open it with notepad and edit the line
ro.build.fingerprint=tmobile/kila/dream/trout:1.6/DRC83/14721:user/ota-rel-keys,release-keys
so that it reads
ro.build.fingerprint=verizon/voles/sholes/sholes:2.0/ESD20/17572:user/ota-rel-keys,release-keys
save it
adb push build.trout.prop /system/
adb shell reboot
now reininstall google voice from market and reinstall maps with the new one

you can navagate to the /system directory, copy the build.trout file to your sdcard directory. mount your sdcard and edit the file with notepad. copy it back over to the /system directory and reboot
then install voice and maps
or try doing the same from your pc using droid explorer

The ADB app is included in the download. I'm not sure if it will work without the driver installed, but you can give it try and report back. Simply run the two .bat files and it will execute all the necessary ADB commands automatically.
Worse comes to worse, you would just need to install the driver for your phone.
Ok, here are the steps I took without adb, since comps at work do not allow USB write.
I uploaded the build.prop and maps.apk and sent them to my email using yousendit.com
Downloaded both into sdcard/download
Using "Root Explorer" navigated to /system and set it R/W (there's a button on the top)
Moved the build.prop to /system
Reboot
Install Maps
Reinstall GoogleVoice
Voila!
When I run the first batch file I get this errror: Device not found.
I've never gotten this message before. ADB was working fine for me a few days ago, before I reinstalled 4.2.5. Any ideas?

adb remount says "error: device not found"
Here you go guys, safe simple and so easy a caveman can do it... (insert the, "If you break it, it's your own fault disclaimer here.)
Download the file in the first post of this thread.
extract the file on your hard drive and copy the build.trout.prop file and the Maps.apk, then put them on to your SD Card.
If you can't get this far....we have a bigger issue.
Then in terminal emulator type
Code:
su
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cp /sdcard/build.trout.prop /system
reboot
When the device reboots then do this one in the terminal emulator
Code:
su
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
rm /system/sd/app/*Maps*
rm /system/sd/dalvik-cache/*Maps*
rm /system/app/*Maps*
reboot
*Note: Someone might say that the reboot at the end of this code is not needed. That maybe, but it worked just fine for me.
Now using Astro, or another file manager, install the maps.apk from the sd card.
If prompted, install the voice. I had it from other programs.
Turn on GPS
Open the drawer
Click on Maps
Let the Maps program find you
Then click menu, directions
Enter the destination, and click go.
It should show
Code:
My location
<the destination address you entered>
Show on map
[B]Navigate[/B]
Thanks for making clear instructions for the terminal emulator [email protected]
Everyone please remember that one can only use the build.trout.prop file in the first post if they are also running Cyanogen 4.2.5 on the G1, else you run the risk of app errors and force closes. If you are running a different version of Cyanogen, make a copy of your own build.trout.prop file found in your system directory, and edit it.

Google Search by Voice v1.4.1 install fails

Searched the forum and wiki and can't find anything on this.
Trying hard not be a 'compleet newb'....
Problem: I've tried to download and install the latest update (v1.4.1) to Google Search by Voice. It fails saying it is not correctly signed. I am not able to uninstall it via the Market software. The existing version is present and still works.
I was thinking of manually uninstalling it and then attempting a re-install from the market. Has anyone had any success getting this update to install on CM 4.2.7.1?
I'm running Cyanogen 4.2.7.1 on my HTC Magic 32B, applied over the flashed and clean-installed 1.6 rooted base - no CM Updater. (Seems to give a better, more stable result - may affect the behaviour of the update).
this stupid error happens because of the test keys or the userdebug keys thay cyanogenmod uses. I would download it somewhere online and use adb to replace the old one wiht the new one. It should work.
Yes I have the same problem with same model phone etc. etc.
I understand the workaround will be the same as Google maps 3.2.1 update but I cannot find up to date "Google search by voice" apk. I was wondering if anyone knows a source that mirrors up to date apps, or could even link a tut about how to get apk's copied out of the phones /tmp folder?
Thanks
I'll check out the package name in the Applications settings and see if I can find it anywhere or somehow capture it. Later....won't have any time until this evening.

That's great I didn't think of that, ill whip out those quotation marks and asterisks for google too. Also later...... 00:20 is not the right time for this....... so tempted......!!!
I fixed the maps.apk problem by going into adb and uninstalling maps.apk and then removing all traces of it. Then I went to marketplace and i downloaded it as normal and it now works perfectly.
Try that with voice search
Do we know what the package name is? Usually something like "com.google.android.apps.xxx" Could try uninstalling through adb. Then re-download from the market?
hello, could u plz share the installer? its not available on the marketplace in my country.
thanks very much
success
Ok, I managed to get Google Search by Voice updated to 1.4.1. I'm no pro and it took ages but it works.
Could a mod advise whether I am allowed to post a link to the apk?
I would be happy to post the steps i took but its not something i have done before and worse still, i used cmd not putty (noob error #1!). So the commands and the order i used them in are lost.
Should have used ubuntu..............
the concept consisted of updating the app and simultaneously using this command while it was downloading
Code:
cp /cache/downloadfile-9.apk /sdcard/download
"9" is only because it is the 9th apk i have downloaded and once the install fails the OS deletes the apk.
(for anyone else it would be different. go into /cache and type ls at the prompt to see what your next number will be)
then rename downloadfile-*.apk to VoiceSearch.apk, remove the original in the phone using adb and replace with the updated app.
I will post again tomorrow with clearer instructions but would much rather post a link to the apk I got, if it is permitted
hmmm. doing an 'adb shell rm /system/app/VoiceSearch.apk' and reinstalling from the market still gives you the unsigned error?

yes it will still give an unsigned error.
that is why you need to copy the apk which android market downloads to /cache before it deletes it, i copied it to /sdcard/download. then install via adb afterwards.
you have to manual install the apk to avoid unsigned error, once you have done this any future updates through market will be fine. Maps updated fine to 3.3 after i manually installed 3.2.1
How?

Workaround for Fixing 'Unsupported Sources'

http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-644769.html << I got my idea from there.
If you update the
Code:
/data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
file so that "install_non_market_apps" = 1 instead of 0, you will be able to install non-market apps off of your sdcard or wherever.
This works for me at least, but you'll have to root first.
I ended up editing the file with the SQLite Manager firefox add-on.
But, since that took me a really long time, I'll just upload the edited settings.db for you. (don't forget to make the extention .db instead of .db.txt)
Now, as far as I know, this won't mess anything up... BUT, I'd feel a lot better if someone who knows more about Android would provide some feedback before anyone else tries this. [It works for me, but I'm not sure if any other user-specific settings are kept in that file that I don't know about!]
But, at least for me, I no longer need to use adb to install apks that aren't from the Android Market.
I hope this is useful to someone...
EDIT::
You will lose your settings if you use the attached settings.db.txt file. Your best bet is to pull the file off your phone, edit it with something that understands sqlite3's database format, and then push it back. It's just better that way.
Further EDIT:: As someone pointed out later in this thread, this file unbeknownst to me when I shared it, actually has a unique ID by which phones can be identified on the android market, etc. While this isn't a huge deal, it can lead to some rather strange behavior... my phone for example has started attempting to download apps from the android market all by itself.
So--- if you want to side-load apps, change the variable in the database like I explained above.
Sorry, completely new to android but where would you put this file so it would allow side-loading?
You'd have to replace
Code:
/data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
with it. You'll have to have your phone rooted first though. Then you'll have to transfer the file to your phone with adb, and you'll then copy it over the existing settings.db file.
Honestly, it might not even be worth the trouble now that attn1 is just doing the whole ROMs.
But make sure you take off the .txt.
This works. Thanks.

did you boot the phone and do adb remount with debugging enabled?
USB debugging? Yeah.
What i did was i used the other method to sideload root explorer, took the settings.db.txt, deleted the .txt part and replaced it via root explorer, and now i can sideload whenever...however, when i try to delete any of the att bloatware, its read only o_o fawking att
Can anyone confirm any other way to remove bloatware without flashing the rom?

The only issue I see (as an Android newcomer, but with a development background) is that the settings.db contains an android_id that is supposed to be unique (it gets generated when you boot the phone the first time after a reset). So anyone installing your settings.db is going to have the same ID.
I'm sure it won't be an issue for most people but I wonder if there'd be a collision in any apps that are designed to communicate between Android devices? For this reason I'll be tweaking my own settings.db once the phone arrives later today.
Big thanks for posting this though!
Thanks for that, I honestly had no idea. I'm very new to Android. And this was a kludge.

If you update the
Code:
/data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
file so that "install_non_market_apps" = 1 instead of 0, you will be able to install non-market apps off of your sdcard or wherever.
This works for me at least, but you'll have to root first.

NOTE: You MUST have root access in order for this to work
sqlite3 is included in the Android SDK tools, so this would be the best way:
COMMON
Enable USB debugging (settings > applications > development > USB Debugging)
adb remount
adb pull /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db settings.db
Linux/OS X
echo "update secure set value = 1 where name = 'install_non_market_apps';"|./sqlite3 settings.db
WINDOWS
echo update secure set value = 1 where name = 'install_non_market_apps';|sqlite3 settings.db
COMMON
adb push settings.db /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
Reboot phone and sideloading works. (thanks fluffyarmada)

It is possible. The Google apps all use the android_id, afaik.
Although, I do remember I was never able to get the settings menu to setup the voicemail forwarding... I always had to use the weird GSM code. (The weird number with a bunch of * and # that you have to type in if you follow google's directions.)

After you've rooted your phone, download the new settings.db into the same folder as where your adb program is. Then type:
adb push /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
in that folder while your phone is connect via usb.
I'm not sure if you have to restart your phone into recovery or not. Can someone check on this?

Well, it's
Code:
$ adb push /path/to/file/on/computer/settings.db /path/to/file/on/phone/settings.db
So, if your settings.db is in your tools folder, then you can do
Code:
$ adb push settings.db /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db

Please follow the instructions posted by attn1 on reply number 13 to this thread.
I removed the settings.db, because it actually has a bunch of extra settings I didn't know about like a handset specific android_id variable... that caused me a bit of trouble...
But, follow the instructions on reply #13 on this thread, and you'll be able to fix it yourself.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
so if we already used the file, is there anyway to revert it back to default and then change the settings via the method outlined above? or.. if we failed to make a copy of our original settings.db file.. basically am i SOL?
EDIT: nevermind, just rebooted into Clockwork and wiped the phone.

[UTIL][PC][15.10.2010] ADB Magic v1.0

This is a BETA version and will have issues
About
I got tired of using ADB by hand for a lot of operations, and thought well hey let's write something for that. I know about DDMS and ADB Explorer, but they aren't always exactly what I want/need.
BETA
Yeah this is a beta version and will have issues.. No warranty, use at your own risk, etc. I'll try to update this in the future. I have a lot of ideas of things to add/improve/fix still.
Requirements and Recommendations
- Required: .Net 3.5 framework
- Required: A working "adb shell" setup
- Recommended: writable /sdcard
- Recommended: root (via su) - note that a lot of things should work without root, but I haven't done any extensive testing on that
- Recommended: busybox
Features
- (also root) Explorer
--- View / Edit files directly in Notepad (optionally converting dos<->unix newlines)
--- Retrieve / add / replace files
--- Rename / delete/ chmod/ chown / checksum
--- New directory / symlink
- Locate (find all filenames matching a certain string)
- ADB shell
- ADB logcat
- ADB (command log)
- Packages
--- Install package (system copy, user copy, ADB install, with or without ODEX, etc)
--- List / backup / remove user and system packages
Retrieving / viewing / editing / replacing / adding files all use workarounds to be able to do this to files that cannot be directly pushed/pulled by ADB, but this functionality does depend on busybox being available.
Donate!
Donations appreciated, you can do so here: http://www.jongma.org/dx.php
Install
Extract the ZIP and put the EXE in the same folder where you have ADB. Also make sure your phone is working with the normal "adb shell" command.
Usage notes
- Please make sure your device is connected in USB debug mode before using ADB Magic !
- Please make sure you do not have the SD cards mounted to your PC !
- This has been developed only with a Galaxy S, so I'm not sure how well it'll work with other devices

New version and moved ...
I have to say i tryed it on my x10,, and great works good, this program has lots of promise, Thank you and top marks for the work so far keep it up...
Works fine on my X10i. Great work. Very promising.
crap no linux version
nice utility,It works well for the Evo
very nice....works on droid
Thanks for this really useful program. It works great on my X10i.
very nice! works with xdandroid on tp1.
Absolutly great, thank you very very much for this! Extremly helpful!
This is pure awesome, thank you!
Updated to 0.9, now works with ROMs with the latest busybox
Found an issue
Hey, ive found you cant ctrl+c in shell, when i was testing my bootanimation;
#bootanimation
you usually hit crtl+c to stop, in this case I could not, so I had to restart the phone.
Otherwise, looking really good so far hey! Keep up the good work!
Super cool. Mad Props.
HI Chainfire!
I love this app, it's great! I've stumbled across a problem though... I upgraded from JPC to JPK on the weekend and since then it hasn't been working, even after going back to JG4. All the times I've tried it, I've been rooted. It comes up with an error box that just says ! in it.
I haven't changed any of the adb files, and I can also use adb shell manually. Any ideas?
Haven't flashed to JPK yet so no idea, but I'll see once I do
No worries!.
I moved it then ran ADBMagic so it could look for ADB, then put ADB back and selected it, still no luck. Also, I flashed back to JG4 then rooted and it still wouldn't work.
I also noticed that for some reason, it can't start the ADB server and issue the toolbox ls -l / command, even with busybox installed but it CAN see the live logging.
I'm stumped :S
-edit-
I got ADB File Explorer and tested it again. It works, but can't read all directories as it's not able to get su priveliges. I seem to remember the first time I used ADBMagic that SuperUser on the phone asked to allow ADBMagic... am I right or remembering badly? If so, it's not asking me to allow it anymore, across the different roms/roots. Strange.
OK, don't worry about my problem at the moment mate, it seems it's the symptom of a larger problem not associated with your program

[Tool] SaveMyApp - Preinstall Your Apps

Tired of having to redownload and reinstall all of your apps when you reflash your phone? SaveMyApp can help.
This script will setup your phone so that after your flash to your favorite rom, all* of your apps will be install on the first boot. These apps will show up in the market too!
Also, the script will allow you to backup your /data/data folder to your sdcard and then restore it after your reflash. The /data/data is where Most of your user data is stored. This is not guaranteed to fully restore everything. This also does not backup your Google, Android, or Motorola settings; this is to improve compatibility with roms.
*The /preinstall folder is limited to 120MB, so if you have more then of apps this script will not fully work.
This should work with all phones, however it has only been tested on the Droid 2/X.
If you want to test this script on a different phone, let me know the /preinstall size and if it worked or not.

Because I am lazy and I zipped it using Mac's built in archiver.
The script isn't working right away!

Excellent program! I'm having trouble getting it to work unfortunately. When apps.sh begins to copy files from /data/apps, I get errors saying "No space left on device" after every single file it tries to copy. This is of course not true since this D2 has over 6 gigs free on the system storage.
I am running this through the window's command prompt, but I don't see much in the code that won't run on windows aside from "du" which isn't even relevant unless my app + app-private folders combined size is over 120 MB (it's not).
I'm also running Epic 2.5 if that has anything to with this.
Any ideas? Am I just doing this terribly wrong?
Thanks!

Apps are normally saved in /data/app this script copies those apks to /preinstall so that after a wipe they will automatically be installed on the first boot. Yes /preinstall is limited to about 120MB.

How big is your /data/app folder?
OK! I sort of have it fixed. In that I'm not getting my original error.
What I did (which in retrospect was not such a hot idea) was delete the /preinstall/ folder and then created a new one with the subfolders /app/ and /md5/. The logic behind was that I saw the script had nothing in it to clean out the original preinstall folder, and I noticed that it had silly things like NFS in it. As I said, in retrospect I should have just deleted specific items from the folder, but that's what I get for acting without thinking too much.
How bad do you think it is that I remade the preinstall folder from scratch?
Now my preinstall folder is properly populated (I think). But the data won't back up for some reason. I think it might have something to do with the if statements being broken. I'm gonna go ahead and modify your script to bypass the if/else statements and see what happens.

The NFS removal is a good call, I will append the script to check the /preinstall folder and prompt to remove the files there
The reason you are having trouble with this script looks it be like because you are not running it on the phone itself...meaning to say you are not running it via a terminal emulator on the phone nor are you running it via adb shell. The backup uses tar, which isn't on windows by default.
Actually I'm running everything through the adb shell. It's puzzling to me too. My terminal emulator for some reason doesn't have root access. At this point I think I'm just going to SBF anyway.
At any rate, I just decided to pull /data/data/ from my phone onto my HD and I will replace it after I reflash and install my programs, but before I log into my google account. Do you see any reason for this not to work?

Hmmm, you might have to check your superuser app to see if you accidently are denying su access. In adb shell do you have a $ or a #?
Backing up the /data/data folder to your HD then restoring might not work because I am not sure if it will retain the owner, permissions, etc.
I had a # in my shell. There was something slightly wonky about my root I think. At any rate my backup method didn't work so well (as you predicted) - it caused timeriffic to force close when I tried to load in my old settings via /data/data/.
I will try using this again once I've got my shiny new Fission 2.1 set up as I want.
Thanks for your attentiveness!
