#Thought I would make a thread with clarified instructions on installing the new Google navigation on a G1 running Cyanogen's ROM. There have been a lot of #problems with the instructions in the other thread since the files supplied (namely build.prop and build.trout.prop) are not correctly referencing each person's #setup correctly.
#Instead of pushing generic prop files onto your phone, you can simply edit one line in your build.trout.prop file found in the system directory on your G1. #Thanks goes to aad4321 who posted it.
#The edit is simply changing the ro.build.fingerprint line to:
#ro.build.fingerprint=verizon/voles/sholes/sholes:2.0/ESD20/17572:user/ota-rel-keys,release-keys
#You can pull this file, edit, remount, then push back onto your phone to allow you install the new maps.apk. You can find the new maps.apk file in the #attachment. You can also find batch files to do all of the above, but is only guaranteed to work on the 4.2.5 ROM. All other Cyanogen version users can use #these files as well if they replace the build.trout.prop file with their own, and then edit the line as above.
#This method will keep all your apps intact, and not cause any problems with marketplace (protected apps not showing), google voice (force closing), facebook #(force closing), etc as reported in the other thread.
#<EDIT 1>If you get the errror "Device not found," make sure you have USB Debugging enabled in settings (thanks kizer).
#<EDIT 2>After performing a rm command, if you get a statement about the directory or file not existing, all is fine. Those rm commands are just trying to #find all possible places the old maps app could be stored, and so if it doesn't exist, you don't have to worry about it. Just go on to the next step.
#<EDIT 3>If you don't see the navigate function, install google voice.
#0) Connect phone
#1) Unzip downloaded file
#2) Run Part 1.bat
#3) When prompted to press any key, do so; the phone will reboot
#4) When your phone is running again, run Part 2.bat
#5) When prompted to press any key, the installation process is done.
#6) Make sure GPS is enabled
#7) Open Maps and press OK
#8) Press Menu
#9) Press Directions
#10) Enter an end point
#11) Click Go

While I placed the files from his zip directly on my SDcard and used terminal to run the command, Junker's method appears stable. I have Google voice, protected apps in market, and functional Navigation. (can't answer for facebook, since I don't have an account.)
Note to someone who does not know shell commands...don't try and copy the ADB commands they are not the same. Know what you are doing before you do it.

I had no connection then realized I didn't have USB debugging enabled.
Seemed to work fine.

I believe the methods listed on the other threads are incorrect, or are more complicated than need to be (and possibly breaks other apps). I only found this method buried in the think-tank post, and though it was suggested for the OP to fix the first post, it never was. Hopefully others who are on Cyanogen's ROM will appreciate the info.

I agree, the other threads over complicate it and cause problems for those who don't know what they are doing. If they learned how to do it themselves there would be less questions and complication.
But then again, now this is just another thread about nav. Really, they should all be locked and something like what is in the first post should be put in the informative links thread.
wanted to thank you for instructions, possibly a better forum wiulda been q&a, as I go there to find answers and help solve some =) other than that this does clear some things up such as the ro line. Like in the other post it says almost same thing but fails to mention the line to change. Etc..etc... this did catch my eye and I was was about to try another method for my buddies phone and this saved me of searching through a thread. My penies, again ty.

I'm confused. Are you telling me that if I follow the steps outlined above that Google Navigation should work on my Cyanogenmod 4.2.5 ROM without any (google voice, market, etc.) problems?

I had no problems, but I did it myself:
from scratch (no map mods, orig build.prop):
adb remount
adb pull /system/build.trout.prop build.trout.prop
open it with notepad and edit the line
ro.build.fingerprint=tmobile/kila/dream/trout:1.6/DRC83/14721:user/ota-rel-keys,release-keys
so that it reads
ro.build.fingerprint=verizon/voles/sholes/sholes:2.0/ESD20/17572:user/ota-rel-keys,release-keys
save it
adb push build.trout.prop /system/
adb shell reboot
now reininstall google voice from market and reinstall maps with the new one

ok, even easier, do you have astro?
you can navagate to the /system directory, copy the build.trout file to your sdcard directory. mount your sdcard and edit the file with notepad. copy it back over to the /system directory and reboot
then install voice and maps
or try doing the same from your pc using droid explorer

The ADB app is included in the download. I'm not sure if it will work without the driver installed, but you can give it try and report back. Simply run the two .bat files and it will execute all the necessary ADB commands automatically.
Worse comes to worse, you would just need to install the driver for your phone.
Ok, here are the steps I took without adb, since comps at work do not allow USB write.
I uploaded the build.prop and maps.apk and sent them to my email using yousendit.com
Downloaded both into sdcard/download
Using "Root Explorer" navigated to /system and set it R/W (there's a button on the top)
Moved the build.prop to /system
Reboot
Install Maps
Reinstall GoogleVoice
Voila!
When I run the first batch file I get this errror: Device not found.
I've never gotten this message before. ADB was working fine for me a few days ago, before I reinstalled 4.2.5. Any ideas?

Yes, its enabled. I swear I installed this navigation app on an earlier version of CyanogenMod and ADB worked just fine. Now it won't recognize my device. Please help me.

If you can't get the batch files to work, edit the batch files to see what commands are performed, and execute them in a terminal. There aren't that many.

adb remount says "error: device not found"
Here you go guys, safe simple and so easy a caveman can do it... (insert the, "If you break it, it's your own fault disclaimer here.)
Download the file in the first post of this thread.
extract the file on your hard drive and copy the build.trout.prop file and the Maps.apk, then put them on to your SD Card.
If you can't get this far....we have a bigger issue.
Then in terminal emulator type

cp /sdcard/build.trout.prop /system
reboot
When the device reboots then do this one in the terminal emulator

mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
rm /system/sd/app/*Maps*
rm /system/sd/dalvik-cache/*Maps*
rm /system/app/*Maps*
reboot
*Note: Someone might say that the reboot at the end of this code is not needed. That maybe, but it worked just fine for me.
Now using Astro, or another file manager, install the maps.apk from the sd card.
If prompted, install the voice. I had it from other programs.
Turn on GPS
Open the drawer
Click on Maps
Let the Maps program find you
Then click menu, directions
Enter the destination, and click go.
It should show

Everyone please remember that one can only use the build.trout.prop file in the first post if they are also running Cyanogen 4.2.5 on the G1, else you run the risk of app errors and force closes. If you are running a different version of Cyanogen, make a copy of your own build.trout.prop file found in your system directory, and edit it.

RE: Google maps
Completely uninstalling and then reinstalling from the market seems to address the force close that occurs when a search query is submitted.
Alternatively, you can move the google maps apk from the ext2 partition to the /system/app folder on the phone. This is the same fix as for the google voice search...
RE: Google voice search
I went about the rather cumbersome process of moving the apk from the ext2 partition (as automatically happens in the Modaco ROM) back to the /system/app folder on the phone. This has resolved all the voice search crashes that I have come across.
NB: I do not know the results if you were to fix google maps by uninstalling and reinstalling and fix google voice search by moving the apk. I.e. if you were to do a google voice search within google maps under this fixing method, Im not sure if the voice search will crash....I'm guessing not though.
Please bear in mind im a COMPLETE linux/andoird/adb/whatever noob. I can outline my method for moving the apks, but Im certain there are better ways to do it.
Sweet, that fixed my google voice issue (and a quick mv and reboot didn't seem so bad to me, but perhaps I just have a high pain tolerance lol)

No sweat, mv is a linux command that can be used to move (thus mv) or rename files.
Basic Syntax:

So what I did was

mv /data/app/com.google.android.voicesearch.apk /system/app
and then rebooted the phone. Worked like a champ!

Thanks a ton for this! I don't have A2SD running and my Google Voice Search was also not working, I didn't even notice until someone had pointed it out. Lucky for me, there was a solution almost as fast as the problem was discovered! We should probably point it out to Paul @ MoDaCo now!

Alternatively, the following command works on MoDaCo's ROM:

In adb im typing:
cp /system/sd/app /desktop
Ive tried cp with the -r, -f, -rf options, and everytime i get a cannot create error message or sometimes a cannot create symlink message
Any tips??

Once you're inside the adb shell, you don't really have access back to your desktop. Your best bet would be to run (from the windows command prompt where you normally run adb):

adb pull /system/sd/app c:\mybackup
(Replace C:\mybackup with whatever the path is to your destination...if you're on *nix or Mac, it will probably be more like "./Desktop" or something)

Ive got a feeling that google voice search was actually causing all the force close issues in google maps. I still have google maps on my sdcard and did not uninstall it (only updated it) - have google voice search on phone and all seems to be fine.
A quick question for codemonk (& anyone else out there). For apps in the /system/app folder, you've got the apk and corresponding odex file. Anyone have any idea where the corresponding odex files for apps installed on the sd are (if they exist at all)?

Not sure on the odex...I noticed some of the apps I removed didn't appear to have them (or are in a location I'm not aware of).
I ended up just moving the google voice app to fix it. (There's another thread on the google maps/google voice thing that contains the fix)

ok i dont even have voice search after installing modaco rom. all i have is the basic google search. how do i get the apk or download it. i tried the move, but it says it doesnt exist. i am complete noob so details are really needed thanks
if you decided to format your sdcard (using the recovery console) using the ext2/fat32/swap option, then the modaco ROM automatically moves google voice search and google maps (and a few other apps like quickoffice) to the ext2 partition on the sdcard.
this partition is accessible in various ways, but most people do it manually using ADB. if you don't know how to use adb, there are a bunch of threads here that talk about it. But in a nutshell, it involves downloading the android SDK, extracting it to somewhere on your computer (no need to install anything), open a command prompt in windows (start -> run -> cmd), navigate to the folder containing the sdk and go to the tools folder inside there (e.g. cd\androidsdk\tools), then type 'adb shell'. If all worked, you should have access to the phone.
then its just a matter of navigating to the ext2 partition on the sdcard (this is where all apps you install will be installed too - this is apps2sd automatically at work). You navigate there by typing:
cd /data/app
you should see the google voice search apk in there + others
then just use the command that codemonk helped me out with:
mv /data/app/com.google.android.voicesearch.apk /system/app
this will move the apk from the data/app folder (this is your sdcard) to the phone.
Written this response very quickly. Ask any specific questions and Ill try to help more if needed.

Ok the app is installed and you may be thinking you're good to go, but you aren't. It's still not working for you like it wouldn't work for me. Do you have Google Voice installed before you did all this stuff? Most likely!
Go into your phone's settings and Manage Applications
Uninstall Google Voice
Fire up the Market and search for Google Voice
Install Google Voice
Reboot your phone (You can do this by holding the power button and select "reboot phone" or the long way through Terminal Emulator)
Run the Map app (now you may have your old address in there that you tried earlier, never fear. Just clear the map from the map menu)
Put in some directions like you normally would
You should see the option for "Navigate" after it gets the directions. Click it.
Accept the installation of the voice guide thingy
You're done! Revel in the awesomeness!

Did this and re-ran part 1 and part 2. Works fine with Handcent and facebook app working. haven't got any FC with other apps and navigation still working after a few hours and some reboots.

how do i run the .bat files on a mac? i double clicked on it and it opened terminal then it rebooted my phone but it was unable to copy the files over.

In windows all that is required is to extract all files to the same directory (only tried it by having them all on the desktop. then doubleclicking the part1.bat from the desktop.
I'm not familiar enough with OSX but it seems like its not finding the build.prop to push it to your phone.
Google Nav only works in the US
NOTE: Currently Google Nav will only work in the US.
You can get it running (as in install the app) on phones elsewhere in the world, but to actual use the Navigate feature you have to have the GPS turned on (duh) so it knows where you are, and due to licensing issues (I think) the Navigate feature will not work if you are not in the US.
Running Cyanogen 4.2.3.1, I used the files Skreacher provided on my T-Mobile MT3G, running on Mac OS X Leopard...it works! I installed the Text to Speech thing needed as well...Facebook loads as always (some people were having problems) but the only thing is that exiting Navigation sometimes doesn't work (I have to exit twice). Thanks a lot Trying this out on the road tomorrow!
for the semi-noobs, like myself lol, can someone please re-explain which codes to run with Skreacher's added input changes?

I followed the instructions at the top of this thread. It works perfectly. Google voice is working too! I was having some trouble with that on my earlier attempts (i think i was using the build.prop's for the G1).
Also, I updated to CY 4.2.4 and there is no breakage. Navigation still works like a charm.

I owe much credit to toastcfh, none of this would be possibly without his work on originally rooting the EVO.
Getting Root & Recovery Mode
(My version, dumbed down even more)
You have three options with rooting:
1) Toasts Rooted ROM - Missing Apps in Market
2) Rooted Stock ROM - No 4G Support
3) Unrevoked Root Patch - No system access in recovery (can't remove sprint apps, etc)
To get a rooted stock ROM, you have to start with Toasts, instructions below; you can find details after.
If you want the Unrevoked Root patch, install a file browser on your EVO and install this.
1. Copy this to the root folder of the SD card, you can do this by syncing the Evo as a disc and just copying in windows.
2. Shut off the Evo, and hold the "volume down" button while powering it on until you see a white screen. Every question it asks, just answer yes. DO NOT UNPLUG, let it finish at all costs, no matter how long it takes.
3. Rename the file you copied to the SD card. (to avoid accidental re-flash and save it for later)
4. Download this and unzip to anywhere of you liking on your desktop. Run the setup, if it asks to accept and install a bunch of stuff, hit cancel, you wont be needing most of it. Select available packages and it will show a repository url, the actual url is irrelevant and will be google's be default...we want to expand the list and select SDK Platform 2.1. Accept an install the selection.
What you just did is installed the Android SDK which includes adb, a shell connector for your phone that we need to operate in recovery mode.
5. Hold the Windows key and press "R", type CMD in the run box. (Run the task with Administrative privileges if there is an option)
Type "cd " in the CMD window, do not forget the trailing space, it is important and DO NOT HIT ENTER yet.
Now, with that CMD windows open, go to the folder you installed the android sdk. There will be a "tools" folder, drag the tools folder into the cmd window.
Press enter, this will set your working directory to the tools folder.
6. If you have not installed drivers for your Evo, there is a folder that comes of the sd card called "HTC-Sync", run the setup in there and it will install sufficient drivers automatically.
After drivers are setup sync the phone using the HTC Sync mode, this will ensure we can control the phone using adb.
Go to your CMD window and type "adb reboot recovery", you will see your phone reboot...it will show a red warning icon on the screen afterwards, this is perfectly normal and good to see such.
7. Your phone should not be in recovery mode, but the filesystem will be offline. Download this to setup the shell for us before we can mount the filesystem. Run "recovery-windows.bat", if you are using Vista or Win7, make to sure right click the file and "Run as Administrator"...you will see another CMD window popup and do some work, just leave it open. You should now have the shell setup in Recovery Mode on your Evo.
8. Go back to your original CMD window we setup, type "adb shell" and hit enter, this will set all commands to work right on the phone. You should see a line with just "#", that is what we want.
Now type "mount /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system" and hit enter.
You should now have your Evo in recovery mode with a shell setup and filesystem mounted. This is where we can begin making changes.
Now that this has all been setup, you may want to go back after making some changes.
Repeat steps 5-8 to re-enter recovery mode with the filesystem mounted.
If you want to continue and do the stock update, check here.
Basically, copy that file to the SD and do steps 5-7.
Then use the onscreen (on the EVO Recovery Mode) to "Flash from ZIP" and select the rooted stock rom update.
WARNING: You must clear user data if the update creates issue, you will know right away.
so this is a third way of rooting, if i used a different way how do i get rid of it and use yours, i'm so tired and confused.

Any thought about the third option (i.e. unrevoked, new sticky, apk??) will it do the same things? i read users aren't losing full market, 4g etc.? Someone much smarter than me please weigh in.

Yes, adding in right now...just tested and it works well.
I need to check if it allows things to be changed in recovery mode (which is important for removing the Sprint bloatware)

If you have root at all, and you have "rw" permissions for "system". You should be able to remove sprint apps when the phone is booted, assuming you dont have root while in recovery.
Is something different on the Evo that im missing?

cd /system/app
ls
Then remove the apps like so
rm NameOfApp.apk

You can make changes like that but it will not actually save to the NAND.
So...you can remove, but it will come back after reboot.

Well thats all kinds of dumb..
I give it a week and there will be something better working.
Nice write up. The only problem is, I don't have the sync software on my sd card because the best buy employee knew about the evo's sd card problem and formatted it, erasing everything on the card. I checked htc's site and they had the drivers for download, but it keeps giving me an error saying it's not compatible. I'm using windows 7 64bit. Any ideas guys?

you CAN remove apps like that, using toast's custom recovery. if you do your shell, and mount, in recovery, using adb, you can go to /system/app and rm whatever you want (be careful not to remove anything important, probably wise to pull whatever first, in case you need to push it back)
i had problems when i did an rm on a file, but that is because apparently i forgot to rm it's info in /data/data too. word to the wise

So to me it seems like all three have something they're not able to do. Seems best to wait for a root release that your able to take full advantage of, right?
I'm a former WM flasher , I need to learn android still. I want the free hot spot/tethering, more battery life as I need 2 batteries to make it through the day -.- (I kill apps constantly, 4g turned on rarely,ect, ect)

Try going to Settings -> Applications on the evo and enable usb debugging...if that5 gives you adb access that's all you need
confirmed working with unrevoked root method. It can tether 3G or 4G, depends on how you connected to the Sprint network. 3G was 0.80Mbps DL, 4G was 2.63Mbps DL.
Before using unrevoked root method, I had applied the sdcard patch already. so it doesn't matter if you applied the sdcard patch or not (OTA updated).
You really shouldn't kill tasks. Just cycle the battery a couple of times and turn your antennas off and on when u need them. Especially if u are in spotty 3g coverage. There already one or two official write ups that say task killing is bad I use to do it and got forceloses and errors all the time. Its not about how many tasks you have running I.e. memory, items about cpu and antenna signal that kills you're battery I'll find the link if I can. My battery life is pretty good and I'm a heavy user.

i cannot get recovery bat file to work. I am at the red exclamation point screen on my evo and i run the bat file as amdmin. it pops up for a second then closes and nothing happens.

Now, as far as I know, this won't mess anything up... BUT, I'd feel a lot better if someone who knows more about Android would provide some feedback before anyone else tries this. [It works for me, but I'm not sure if any other user-specific settings are kept in that file that I don't know about!]
But, at least for me, I no longer need to use adb to install apks that aren't from the Android Market.

Further EDIT:: As someone pointed out later in this thread, this file unbeknownst to me when I shared it, actually has a unique ID by which phones can be identified on the android market, etc. While this isn't a huge deal, it can lead to some rather strange behavior... my phone for example has started attempting to download apps from the android market all by itself.
So--- if you want to side-load apps, change the variable in the database like I explained above.

What i did was i used the other method to sideload root explorer, took the settings.db.txt, deleted the .txt part and replaced it via root explorer, and now i can sideload whenever...however, when i try to delete any of the att bloatware, its read only o_o fawking att
Can anyone confirm any other way to remove bloatware without flashing the rom?

The only issue I see (as an Android newcomer, but with a development background) is that the settings.db contains an android_id that is supposed to be unique (it gets generated when you boot the phone the first time after a reset). So anyone installing your settings.db is going to have the same ID.
I'm sure it won't be an issue for most people but I wonder if there'd be a collision in any apps that are designed to communicate between Android devices? For this reason I'll be tweaking my own settings.db once the phone arrives later today.

sqlite3 is included in the Android SDK tools, so this would be the best way:

It is possible. The Google apps all use the android_id, afaik.
Although, I do remember I was never able to get the settings menu to setup the voicemail forwarding... I always had to use the weird GSM code. (The weird number with a bunch of * and # that you have to type in if you follow google's directions.)

After you've rooted your phone, download the new settings.db into the same folder as where your adb program is. Then type:
adb push /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
in that folder while your phone is connect via usb.
I'm not sure if you have to restart your phone into recovery or not. Can someone check on this?

I removed the settings.db, because it actually has a bunch of extra settings I didn't know about like a handset specific android_id variable... that caused me a bit of trouble...
But, follow the instructions on reply #13 on this thread, and you'll be able to fix it yourself.

so if we already used the file, is there anyway to revert it back to default and then change the settings via the method outlined above? or.. if we failed to make a copy of our original settings.db file.. basically am i SOL?

This tutorial may also work on other Chinese generic tablets. You would only need get the hardware vendor and product ID's from the device info for step 2. For the purpose of this post I wont be getting into that but the information is out there.. GOOGLE IS YOUR FRIEND
Introduction
Its likely if you are reading you have recently visited Big Lots and scored a $69 7" tablet. Only to get home and find virtually NO information on rooting it or installing Google Play or GAPPs. I know I was in that boat but after a few hours of messing around I got it. I am writing this to hopefully help the hundreds of others I see out there asking for help on this.
Step 1 Download Stuff (Things to round up before you even think about starting)
Root with Restore by Bin4ry v15 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460 .** UPDATE ** I attached the version I used to this post
ADB Drivers - You have several options here, milage may very.** UPDATE ** I attached USB drivers to this post. I had to seperate the 64 and 32 bit drivers to get the files under the 8 mb limit for uploads
install android SDK http://dl.google.com/android/android-sdk_r21-windows.zip and follow instructions to get the google usb drivers. Search XDA there are several guides, I couldn't find the one I used as of writing this article but there are many out there.
Search google and find a zip with just the ADB drivers.
Download Super One Click Root and use the drivers in the tools directory of the zip. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
Root Explorer - quick way to move and remount file systems rw with ease. I used v2.13.1. Google around and find an APK to install, just be careful there is another completely differnent package out there called "rooted explorer" it may work but I have not tried it. ** UPDATE ** I attached the version I used to this post
Google Apps for ICS - gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip is what I used from http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip ** Update ** I replaced the URL with a direct download link from goo.im enjoy!

Step 2 install and configure your ADB USB Drivers (Let the fun begin)
Extract your zip file containing the ADB USB drivers or Install the Android SDK and follow instructions on how to use the SDK manager to download the lastest drivers from google.
Once downloaded edit the inf file (usually named android_winusb.inf)
Add the following under the [Google.NTx86] heading and again under the [Google.NTamd64] heading: (one is for 32bit systems and the other is for 64 bit Systems)

After saving and exiting. Turn on USB Debugging on your tablet. It is under Settings => Developer Options and is the first option at the top make sure it has a check in the checkbox. Exit the developer screen by pressing back or the home key and plug in your tablet to a usb port on your computer using a micro-USB cable.
Device detection should at this point detect a few devices but at least 1 will fail without drivers. Possibly more on XP systems..
Under Device Manager => Other Devices you should have a device called "PLT7035-PL" use the usb drivers modifed above to install the ADB USB Drivers.
*** Important Note ***
At this point even with the ADB Driver installed ADB will not see the tablet. We have to create or edit the file c:\users\whatever your username is\.android\adb_usb.ini
If you have already run ADB at any time on your system the file and directory should already exist. If not you will need to create the directory and the file.
on a single line simply add this to a blank line in the file and save and exit:
0x2207
This tells ADB to look for that vendor code. (if you allready have ADB on your computer 'adb devices' should now show your tablet.
** UPDATE ** This is still necessary even if using the drivers attached to this post!

Step 3 Root your Tablet!

I almost bricked my tablet on this step due to an error with a faulty PlayStore I had tried to install just using the APK. It kept the tablet from rebooting properly during the root process! I recommend erasing all user data before continuing YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

From explorer on your pc double click the RunMe.bat and select option one.
This particular root uses the system restore function to gain root access. If everything goes right you should get a prompt on the table to restore an image.

Press restore ON THE TABLET without entering a password or changing anything else and after a minute or two (maybe more) it should reboot.. Do some more stuff then reboot one more time and you should now have a rooted tablet.
Step 4 Copy root explorer and gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip to the internal storage of the tablet.
Make sure the tablet is plugged into your computer and turn On USB Storage.
Copy rootexplorer.apk and gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip to the Downloads folder via windows explorer and the removeable drive from the tablet.
Step 5 Install root explorer
ON THE TABLET: to applications => explorer => Internal memory => Download => rootexplorer.apk
This should bring up the apk installer and ask for permission to install rootexplorer. Follow the prompts until rootexplorer is installed.
Open root explorer. The first time you open it if everything is right you should get a prompt from SU to allow root access, hit grant. After that you might get a message that you need to close and reopen root explorer again, this is completely normal.
Step 6 Remount File Systems r/w
Once root explorer is open and has root access you should be in the root directory of the device.At the top you should see a message that says "Mounted as r/o" and a button to the right of it that says "mount as r/w".

Now click on the ../ Parent Folder icon on the top to go back to the root directory,

tap and hold on gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip until the menu comes up and select "extract all" this will extract the zip file to /sdcard/extracted/gapps-ics-20120429-signed/
Step 8 Copy Google APPS to /system
Scroll to and TAP .. Parent folder at the top to go back a directory to /sdcard/

Scroll to and TAP gapps-ics-20120429-signed
You should see 5 items, install-optional.sh, META-INF, optional, system and the ../ Parent Folder link.

TAP and hold on the system folder until the menu comes up and select copy.
This will place a paste button on the bottom of the screen be careful not to hit it yet or you will have problems.

TAP ../ Parent Folder until the directory at the top says / (you should have to go back 2 or 3 folders)
You should now see a bunch of folders in the root directory as well as the tablets system folder. There should NOT be a ".. Parent folder" visible.

Now hit the paste button on the bottom left. You should get a warning massage saying "system already exist. Do you want to overwrite it?" hit yes
The file copy takes 1 to 2 minutes when it is done all that is left is to remount the / and /system folders r/o and reboot the tablet

Click the button to mount /system as ro.
click the back icon on the bottom left until you have exited root explorer.
Press the power button on the top of the tablet and turn it off and back on.
If everything went right you should now have a fully functioning rooted tablet with Google Playstore...

Here's how to do it:
Install Android SDK, then install Android SDK Tools, Android SDK Platform-Tools, Google USB Driver (download from google)
Install PdaNet for Android on PC.
Attach Proscan pad, check Settings->Developer options->USB debugging to on
XP install adb driver - if unsuccessful, need modify registry
regedit under HKLM/SYSTEM Permissions -> Advance, check replace permission entries on all child

Install USBDeview, run to see usb device attached, get device ID of PROSCAN pad (0x2207)
Add device ID to file adb_usb.ini in c:\docume~1\<user>\.android, also add google's id:

Unfortunately as stated above there is no factory rom available for these tablets yet... I am looking into using rkflash or rkflashtool to download my rom prerooted so I have a backup and also can post a rooted rom for everyone. Most likely later this week I should have some time to figure out the rkflashtool and get it dumped.
I will post it here once it is done.
I'm going to say this now. I have a very busy schedule so I cannot guarantee when I will get this accomplished.

Confused as heck !!
OK, I am confused as heck here. I have the SDK installed. I have the USB Drivers installed. The PC sees the phone just fine, I can browse the internal storage and the external sd card with no problem. Windows XP Device Manager shows Android Phone, and under that the Android Composite ADB Interface.
PDANet works with the phone, no problem. However, adb devices never shows the device, and the Root program cannot find it either. At this point, I'm stumped. Any ideas what I need to do? I have put the android_usb.ini file in c:\Documents and Settings\myusername\Android with the necessary hex codes for the device and for Google. I'm going nuts here!
I know ADB is installed properly, because I can plug my phone into the PC and run adb devices, and it's detected just fine. It's just this tablet it can't find.
FIX: Not as obvious as it might have been, but here is the solution to my problem. I used the Search function to find the adb_usb.inf file - umm... it's in .android, not android. Once I added those ids, everything was fine.
No Market?
Achieved root, copied over the system folder from the zip, but no market. Did I miss something?
What about Recovery?
Just wondering if there is a recovery option as yet? That would be so helpful!

Yeah, this happened to me too. And for some reason, when you go to the \system folder and look in apps there is another apps folder in there. I think there is something really odd going on with root manager possibly. I don't know what the deal is, but none of the Google Apps are running.
I've tried several older 4.0.x versions of GAPPS, and I will be danged if I can get any of them to work. I'm rooted OK, but that's all that worked thus far.

The instructions were great above! The pointer to the version of google play was bad, but I found this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1934441 and after using Root explorer to do the appropriate permissions at / and /system, and on the renamed file, it works!

Now that I got Google Play to work...
I am having an odd problem however - the installation of apps stalls at 0% for about 30 seconds, and then continues. And as the percentage is updated, I see app screens cycling. And little google play shopping bags start to stack up in my "task tray" area of the tablet.
Does anybody else have that problem? It's very annoying! It seems like the downloaded apps not only install but open, eating up precious memory.
Speaking of which, how is the flash memory used? (4 GB), and not having apps take up the 500 MB that's available?

It is 4GB shared. I haven't tried looking at the partition table.
There is only 2GB usable, it's on the TF card, I moved the apps there.
Not sure how to access the SD card to put apps there.

My GAPPS are working fine. I thought about killing that /system/system folder and manually placing the files via adb.
Try checking the permissions too, I think they need to be 644 or better.
I've put the Tablet away for now, I will tinker again later probably.

If you go to the Apps tab under the system settings you will see a button that says "Move to TF Card"

You have to extract the zip file, remount the file systems as rw and copy the /system folder from the zip into the / of the device so that all the files goto their proper places... if you have /system/system it was not copied correctly...
as far as those not getting ADB to reconize the tablet.. a) make sure you have usb debugging turned on and b) you put the hardware id in the adb_usb.ini file.. See the ** important note ** in Step 2!
Unzipping Files
I have read and followed your directions to download the files, but, my unit keeps saying it can not open any zip files.
Do you have any idea why it may say this or how to get around this problem so I can continue as instructed?
unzip on your computer and transfer over, or use root explorer

You can unzip them on your computer and then transfer them over, or use root explorer on your tablet. You'll have to hold your finger on the .zip file for a few seconds and then the unzip option pops up.
Well, everyone be careful! When my Google Play would not install properly, I tried to clean the tablet up, ie, put it back to its original condition. Somehow, I managed to cause something to crash, and from then on, the tablet won't boot past the Android startup screen, although I can adb into it and it is still rooted, etc. What I've got now is a project tablet - HOW TO UNBRICK THE BRICK.

I hope you do so or some body find a way to unbrick this thing as for me i still have 26 days to return mine.i got to the part where I was about to paste the system I hit yes then everything locked up. I noticed before I hit yes it said do you want to merge and copy the files over not do you want to overwrite it but I still hit yes bad idea. can anybody tell me why I said merge and copy. well this is the second one I have bricks follow the steps perfect got all the way to the end and this is what happens so I took the first 1 back guess I'm going to take a second back also and try again until i figure out what I'm doing wrong.has anybody maked a rkimage or a .zip. update that will work to re cover this thing. I would be willing to try it out for you because I can.

try doing an ADB shell
then the following commands
su
wipe data
this will reset the user partition. I had something similar happen on mine.. BTW 'wipe all' will definitly brick your tablet so be carefull
If you still cannot get it I was almost in a car accident yesterday and my tablet went flying and broke the screen... If you confident with a soldering iron I now have a plt-7035 mainboard prerooted and playstore installed for sale for $25 including shipping.. it would involve soldering 6 wire and the wifi antenna if your up to it pm me,, I know its good as I was able to ADB into it and run su and wipe data to reset it..
