Wifi tether settings - Thunderbolt General

Alot of people on several roms have complained of wifi tether not working. I found in a thread somewhere here the proper settings, since then ive had no issues with establishing a secure connection. Here they are---device, thunderbolt-- driver reload, check-- router fix, check---disable lockscreen wake, check. I take no credit for this, cant remember what thread it was in, but it has worked for every rom ive used. Who ever posted this was THE MAN, cause it hasnt failed me since. I see this issue in so many threads just figured id share what someone else shared and others can share. Good luck people.

Thanks.. but..
What driver do you reload.. what is the "router fix" and where do you disable the Lockscreen Wake?
Just wondering...
thanks!

Its all under the settings menu when you open wifi tether, set it for our device, then scroll down and check the other 3 items, works perfect on every rom ive tried after that.

What version are you all using? I don't see a Router Fix option in the settings and just recently noticed if my screen dims I get bumped. Never had a problem in the past, using version 2.0.7.

Thanks!!! Got it!! worked great!!!

excellent, so far so good, thanks!

Hey, just wanted to chime in with my own success using this path with my routed phone to get tethering functioning.
I rooted my Thunderbolt recently, and was experiencing a constant radio swap any time I tried tethering. It would just permanently cycle until I stopped tethering. I'm on one of the grandfathered unlimited data plans.
I initially tried the fix above w/ OpenGarden, but it didn't have the Router Fix; issue persisted.
Installed the Tether app that has router fix, tethering works great.
Fix as described in original thread:
Settings for wifi_tether_v3.xx
Device-Profile > Thunderbolt
Setup-Method > Auto
Wifi-diriver reload > Checked
Routing fix > Checked
Disable Wake-Lock > Checked
Thanks for the fix.

Thunderbolt profile only works on my phone with 3.5 ROMs and down. All the ICS roms I have to use the rezound profile.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2

Running a iKream from REDZ mod so I think that is android 3.5 and have wifi tether 3.2 beta 2
Settings are set to Rezound profile with keep alive, change prefered dns, routing fix, and change alternate dns all on. Works like a champ

There's a few, try pdanet. Google "june fabrics".

Why don't you use the stock htc app with the fixed APN (wap.cingular....) ?

If you are already rooted you can use a wifi tether app like Wireless Tether, you don't have to mess with PDA net (PDAnet is great if you are not rooted). I tried Barnacle but had trouble getting my Mac to join the adhoc network it creates. Rather than mess with it too much I put on Wireless Tether and it worked Great.

I can second Barnacle WiFi and also use the stock Mobile Hotspot.
If you are rooted you do not need any program for tether.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=980591
Use the referenced APN and you will have tethering available......
I second the wireless tether especially if you have your unlimited data still. Its stupid to pay for it twice

If rooted it also works to remove all entitlement apns from the APN database in /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db
Do you think there will ever be a wifi app that does not require rooting. I had to downgrade back to pda.net. It works but I already miss the wifi app I used for years on WM 6.5.
I believe most custom roms allow tethering without adding it to your plan.
I asked about coredroid in another thread, and I got conflicting reports though.
If you are already rooted, just flash a custom ROM. then you don't need an app and you will also have a hotspot. My favorite is Cyanogenmod 7.0.3 but if you want to keep Sense UI, try Android Revolution HD or CoreDroid or some other Sense based ROM. And Congrats on your escape from under Steve Jobs's thumb =D

The APN method someone mentioned allows wifi tethering without root.
yes by changing the APN you can enable wifi tethering without root , ive done it many times on un-rooted phones ,just dont use it to much or it will be noticed and good ole at&t will add the package (not sure about other carriers)

Ohhh... You're oh so helpful with that comment!!!! Surprised nobody has "Thanked" your helpful post.
Anyways, I too had this problem with HFS v1.4 and did not find a solution. I did have my APN set to T-Mobile, so I don't believe that was the problem. My issue was also present with WiFi turned on, even with WiFi Calling turned on (Although I don't believe WiFi Calling has anything to do with it).
I never got a chance to debug the issue further as I had a need for the Video Camera to operate properly, and switched back to a GB ROM for the time being.
I'll re-flash my v1.4 of HFS and see if I can check the logs to see if anything is there.

The point of my comment is I just made a thread about the fact that this forum is not even moderated it seems. In my post I claimed that there is about 3 threads with the exact same title, in nature, and with in 5 minutes of me posting it, this thread was created. I was hoping for a mod to see it. There is no solution for it and there has been a bunch of mentioning for it on the other 3 threads, and within the threads them selves! So ya.

When stuff like this is stated again and again people get upset and annoyed. I'm sorry if Im just blabbing but you get my point.
Now for your trouble try re uploading the apn settings. Or manually input them

Ongoing Wi-Fi Toggle Notification in the Verizon Galaxy S3

Just found this on Droid-Life. No one else has seemed to mention this occurring. Does anyone else have an ongoing ("Turn on WiFi") notification on their Verizon GS3?
Not only do I have this, but when I'm at home with my wifi turned off on my phone, but available throughout the house, I keep getting asked to turn on my wifi on my phone. It says:
Known Wi-Fi network available. Connect?
OK
Always auto connect
Not now, remind me later
Excuse me Verizon and your mucking around with my phone. I have unlimited data so I use it instead of wifi. Deal with it. Quit asking me to use wifi. I have it turned off for a reason.

You can, though.
I have root right now. There are guides on how to do it in the Verizon Development subforum.
It's basically just flashing a (large) pre-rooted system.img file in ODIN.
This also doesn't appear to set off the flash counter either and seems to be safe for all of us who have done it.
Okay, since I don't have my phone yet, I'm a little confused....
Does the notification just sit in the notification pull down or does it actually notify you every time you run an app to switch to WiFi? You know, like a notification sound and message flashing in the notification area?
If it's just sitting there, whatever. If it comes up every time you do anything regarding data and tries to tell you to go on WiFi, well, that's f**king annoying.
There is a setting to disable notification when using high data usage apps

rooting a friends phone:
Try Open Garden or WiFi Tethering (root) apps from market.
You've conflated a couple questions here.
"Which ROMs have a built-in feature for WiFi tethering?"
Most, if not all, do.
"Given that T-Mobile generally prohibits tethering, is there a way that I can tether in a way that I am not blocked by T-Mobile?"
Yes, there are several ways that you can make the traffic appear as though it originated on your phone. Most, if not all, of these are applications, use of things like VPN or ssh tunneling, or configuration of your tethered clients. There are several approaches. Search is your friend on finding one that works for you and that you are comfortable with.

Yes that works or just go to settings>wireless and networks>tethering. No need for an app if its built in but if you want one there's plenty to choose from
Wifi tethering used to work no problem on my phone but T-Mobile very recently seems to have changed something where they can detect it - on ICS ROM's - and block it in the browser on your computer. It takes a few link clicks to get the blocked page.
For this - I have to switch to a google related user agent to not have wifi tethering blocked.

that's funny, i'm using aokp (latest team acid build), and i was just using wifi tethering with no problems at all. not to mention that i'm not even supposed to have it since i have the new plan "truly unlimited 4g." the problem i do have though is usb tethering. i gave my team members a log to see if its fixable the other day, but haven't heard anything yet. its no big deal to me unless i wanna use it to tether my pc when our dsl daily cap is reached (which is everyday, but "i" don't use the pc everyday). basically just gave em the log to try and help those who do want/need it.

It was new for me. And only through the browser. Still connects no problem but after several clicks it will pop up a T-Mobile page saying I don't have the tethering package. I am on Raver's ICS Audiophile.
I was tethering just fine on vacation last week, until I got a text message from T-mobile saying they were blocking it, and sure enough it quit working.
I gotta look into the user agent spoofing I guess... at least before my next trip.
(All three of the hotels I was in were changing $5-10 for internet!)
T-Mobile is on a roll!
Didn't actually think they were gonna give something for nothing did ya.
They know that with strategic planning...(lower the plan price and give you more data)....if they give a little....you'll want more,so now they can ask for more, and sleep soundly when they go to bed at night.
So mine got blocked too, took me a couple of hours last night but found a way around it using Bluetooth Open Garden and VPN combination. Back to free tethering....victory over TMobile!....for now at least.

So using just the VPN client still blocked you??
Yeah, but it's possible that was just because I was trying multiple solutions. I'll look at it again tonight and see if I can substitute the Bluetooth with WiFi and keep it working. I think it might be in my proxy settings....it was late and I was happy to just get access.

Or you can change the user agent for your browser and just use wifi tethering as you normally would. It is a pretty simple fix.

I thought with Google Chrome you have to have the Developers Tools open for that to persist. Is there a simple way to make it stick without having to have the developer tools window open? Thanks.
Edit: Ok, so tried the APN switch on Google chrome last night and it did work, while the developers tools window is open. Only issue was that some of the sites that my wife uses that have display issues on mobile web now have the same issue on the PC...I'm not talking about page layout, but specific links and options not displaying....the reason she still needs to use the PC in the first place. I can definitely recommend the APN fix to people being blocked by Tmobile as a quick simple fix as previously stated in this thread. It took a little longer to set up, but I'm sticking with the VPN for full functionality.
Regarding the wifi use with VPN; I haven't been able to get it to work yet, so sticking with the Bluetooth for now.
