[Q] Has Ns4g GB kernal development/support stopped? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has kernal support for 2.3.7 stopped all together? does anyone know what the latest gb kernal is? im running mathkids last version and while its still good i just miss trying out new ones

some of these DEVers are busy with Galaxy Nexus or ICS
and yes , looks like no more update only bug fix and make stable

Mathkid does have new ones. They're just for ICS Why not just upgrade?
*if you didn't wipe /system and /boot it is NOT A FULL WIPE*

i know mathkid has new ones for ICS, but im not asking about ICS as the thread title shows.
if i was interested in upgrading, which at the moment im not, i wouldnt have asked this question at all.

What more could be done with gb anyway? It's been out so long and so many modifications were made, I just don't know what could be left to do.
ICS on the other hand, is pretty bare and has a lot of ground to catch up.

[Q] How to update to GB

Hi guys most of you might find this question silly but there are some of us newcomers who are still getting into this!
So, I rooted my phone, have ROM Manager and CWM Recovery, version 3 and my question is how we're going to update to official GB when it becomes available? Will we do it through official T-Mobile update, or will some of you guys make it available for us?
Thank you all!
Yes...
you should be about to get it either way. If you get the official update you will probably lose root... If you wait a few there will be a rooted version posted by one of the many xda members...

One more dumb question: Why is everybody so excited about the official GB update, when we have right now a few GB leaked versions with some custom ROMs (Bionix from TeamWhiskey, etc... ) available, for which as I hear, many say are excellent? Is this official one gonna be better in any significant way than these custom already out? Thanks! )

It will come with an official GB kernel and hopefully updated battery drivers and A2DP functionality...Amongst other LG fixes (again, hopefully).

OK, I get it... So, all these unofficial GBs are sort of limited because they lack these LG stuff they're (hopefully) putting into the official one. That's why it's smart to wait a bit more.
Hopefully it will fix most or all the problems.

Yes, that's the case. The leak has issues (which makes sense, it's not a finished build), and almost all Gingerbread mods are based on the leak so they have the same issues. I know CM7 is using the Gingerbread source instead and has fixed a lot of the issues, but not all of them.
The official update is not only going to be completely stable (hopefully) but will come bundled with better drivers/kernel support which will fix most of the common issues with the phone (hopefully).
I've gone through an Over The Air update to Android before, and if it's like what I experienced, you're going to get a pop-up that asks if you want to update now or later. Choose later if you want to keep root, someone here will have the official build rooted probably within the hour but definitely within the first couple of days.
In the mean time though, don't be scared of trying out one of the ROMs that are available. I swear by CM7, but I've heard wonderful things about EagleBlood and Ultimate too.

I have heard that official updating the rooted phone could actually brick it? And when a mod is nightly version, does it mean it it not completely stable? I am interested in CM7, but I could not find a stable version on their site.
Thanks!
i have question also since it's related to thread title. i'm running stock right now but rooted. once i update to gingerbread cm7, will i have to install all apps and settings all over? and will call log and stuff like that disappear also?

You should be able to get all of that stuff after startup my hitting the square boxes in the initial setup. Worked for me yesterday with the Eagleblood 2.3.4 ROM, when someone recommended it to me rather than Titaniumbackup which screwed up my phone a lot because I went from Froyo to GB

When I did an OTA update, it kept all of my apps and settings. I can't remember if it preserved call log.

I don't know if it will brick or not, my OTA was not rooted. And CM7 nightlies are NOT completely stable, but they're on build 58 by now and the ROM works perfectly fine. The only issue I can see with the phone is the top bar they added to the notifications menu that has toggle-able settings like WIFI, GPS, etc sometimes doesn't show up and in the camera, it calls both cameras "back" instead of one being "front".
But if you're concerned with stability that much, use the leak or EagleBlood.

yes but now we'll have the kernel source code!
Wrong section bro. btw ya really good news...also my GB with sense 2.1 odex nand fit version is done will upload it soon...after first boot data partition has 110Mb for apps data...
I believe 10 days ago HTC announced Desire won't be getting Gingerbread, because of memory problems.
@htrx, they said htc will remove some of the app so they can fit GB.
Great news, if we get more out of the official version.
And 9 days ago they retracted that statement following a massive rollocking by the community
great news i think
Hope for a better kernel (and for snq´s extras on this)
also for better radio, ril, wifi..and battery
with kind regards..Alex
"Exciting" news for the ones not rooted LOL
Reading the above statement correctly though just says they will be announcing when the update will be coming next week. So for all we know they could say GB for Bravo will come next year!

Biblically epic! Just remember to exclude that bloatware you are always including in your ROMs...
My phone is rooted, and i have GB already, but this official+Our dev's edits will rock in the air, i mean no bugs at all...
Mmmm...
I think you'll find the only thing of interest are the Kernels... anyone who wants Gingerbread on their device has had it for months... they sure aren't going to add any Sense 3 stuff either which I've been enjoying for a long time. Good job we have techy wizards in this community who know how a ROM should be put together

But it will be a proper Desire GB rom, not a patched together mix of other Roms. I havent switched back to a sense rom due to this.

+1 for this, i know what you mean...essentially all hd gb sense are based on rcmixhd or neo´s rom...(include mine..as i have not the time to patch the hd rom complete to make it work for desire)
and if we get it...it´s make/done for desire...so i think it have better performence..

I would love to see this rom somewhere in XDA, stock GB from htc on the desire

Best GB ROMs?

I want to go back to GB as I'm not satisfied with the ICS ROMs I've tried (only had this phone a few weeks). Dev board is flooded with ICS, any GB suggestions?

I highly reccomend Oxygen, only problem I ever had with it was sending and recieving mms. Other than that I say it is lightening fast and stable.
Were you able to fix the mms issue?

Try .CIBERGR-MOD 's GB version. It's a fast rom. Although, I'm not sure if he has a NS4G version.

Peter Alfonso's GPA19 ROM is the most stable one that I tried. Look for Peter Alfonso's site and click the Downloads link for crespo. I would post a link here, but XDA's nonsense won't allow it.
Download the 12-07-11 one to get the latest GB version. There aren't a lot of customizations like CM, Oxygen, MIUI, etc., but it's stable as hell. The latest Oxygen (2.3.2) has a REALLY obnoxious, and largely ignored, backlight notification bug where you have to reboot to get the lights to go out... only way I've ever found to fix it is to install another kernel. However, Peter Alfonso's got one of those too... just go to his site and it should be on the second page of the "blog."
I know you said you didn't like ICS, and I didn't either at first, but Pete's ICS ROMs are also great and very stable. The latest is 01-30-12, and you can get it from the same crespo download page.
question.
hey man i got a question, could i use peter alfonso's rooted stock rom for gingerbread (right?) when downgrading, right? instead of re rooting it.

I'm currently running Euroskank CM7 kangs.
Wow, really. I don't have any ICS envy seeing how sweet those kangs are. They're smooth as butter and stable too! Checking my phone, my current uptime is 132 hours (5.5 days) since my last reboot, which was to flash the latest kang back then.

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking. Both of his ROMs are pre-rooted, so no, you won't have to re-/root anything. But since you're going from ICS to GB you'll have to wipe everything, so there's no real "downgrade" path.
From a rooting perspective, the only difference I've noticed, that's kind of annoying, is that his GB ROM contains busybox and his ICS ROM doesn't. It's not a deal-breaker since there are Market apps to add it in, but it's kind of annoying that the binary has to be re-linked after each update/flash.

Im asking that if i can reverted back to gingerbread version without loosing root, may i install his pre-rooted stock without loosing root. Thats all, but since you mentioned it, im relived to revert it back. but i couldnt find his link could you provide me one? Also is it regular to flash it back to gb or is there a special method to do it?
I can't post links yet because our fine friends at XDA say that I need to post more for the privilege. Pfft.
You should be able to type peter alfonso downloads crespo and get to the page. 12-07-11 is the latest GB version (GPA19).
There's no "special" method for flashing, just do what you would do when going from one incompatible ROM to another... wipe data/factory reset, format cache partition, format /system, wipe dalvik cache. There are probably a million different combinations that different people will give you for the proper install, but that's what I normally do.
Tryout CyberGR's CM7 MOD and you won't go back:

Just read the feedback in the thread and you'll understand.
perfect, and uh before i do that it could be any rooted gb rom right? just curious, that's all.
Don't mean to hijack the thread but what if I wanted to put a custom GB ROM on top of stock GB rom. I'm curious if you can just flash without wiping? Or should I do titanium backup instead?

JellyBean - JELLYTIME for DHD/Inspire4g - Beta 10 wifi problem

So after installing this amazing rom and loving it for a week or two; I see a kernel update and install it. Everything went smooth but I lost my wifi after the fact. I was hoping someone could help me keep the kernel and get the wifi going. nothing about wifi problems were stated and it work fine previously. I wiped everything and even tried the wifi fix manager thingy i got with the ics rom i was running previously to see if that would do it but to no avail. I wanted to ask the developer but need some 10 post so help a bro out!
p.s....gotta give props to the man who had me running jb before anyone of my friends with newer phones!!! RANDOMBLAME!!!!

ditto, this happend with my Paranoidandroid install as well. kernel allowed me to stay running without crash, but wifi is a pretty big letdown...
unfortunatly, without the kernel itself being fixed, or the wifi module fixed, we are stuck looking for another alternate kernel... oh yeah, we are pretty limited.
thanks

So I'm only using it with jelly time or jb. I'm flashing the os then the kernel cuz the os installs its own. This is an updated kernel for the os.I'm thinking i should maybe wipe the cache partition after the the os then do the kernel but at the same time I would think that other problems would be happening if that was the issue. What do you think?

does the system function without the kernel update?
if it does, you might want to hold off on updating til the ROM updates for it.

Modified Netflix apk

i was just wondering if anyone out there could help me with a Modified netflix apk to download because the stock won't work with my rooted phone and ive looked all over for one that works and i think i have tried them all. all and any help would be thankful. i dont know if it will help but i have eaglesblood rom
Eaglesblood Rom? Is it Gingerbread, ICS, or JellyBean? CM7,9,or 10 based? I think you might be having problems if you are on an ICS or JB rom. Your problem with Netflix probably is not because you are rooted, but due to incompatibility with the specific rom you are using. I personally use Netflix with CM7 based roms without any problems. I have not used Eaglesblood for ICS or JB, but I can Nandroid back to an ICS or JellyBean build I have used (Benee's Hackfest or ICS Paranoid). If you are on a Gingerbread Eaglesblood, then I'd be surprised to hear about you having a problem with Netflix...
I might be able to help if you let me know what Eaglesblood you are using.

Thats ICS AOSP bld 5. Find their GB EGB. Flash that and then your Netflix will work with no hiccups. Or just wait a week or so when ROMs start coming out with stable ICS/JB.

Make a Nandroid backup of your current software. If you're not happy with Gingerbread (and everything working), simply restore the Nandroid to revert back.
