Man, I'm so frustrated.
On other forums some people have mistakenly thought I'm against flashing custom ROMs. I'm not. I'd flash a custom ROM in a heartbeat. In fact, the reason I hang out here is I'm watching for "That ROM". I'm just not comfortable with the state of things on the Captivate. Here's the deal... it seems every single ROM is a compromise. I'm not talking about differences in themes, or what apps are included, etc... I'm talking basic functionality. Sometimes it's little things, sometimes it's big things... but always, you need to give stuff up. And I'll get the response, "yeah well stock is buggy too, so what's your point?". You know... sometimes the little things count. The details add to the experience. Maybe we want all the little things to actually work. Maybe you don't care about bluetooth, but I do. Etc.
Bluetooth. Haptic feedback. Battery life. Cell reception. GPS. Stability. Performance. Voice quality/Audience support. Pick the 3 you don't care about and are willing to give up.
Frustrating.
And a lot of it seems to come down to these "modem" files. Dozens floating about... everyone has their favorite like they have a favorite color. And they themselves come with compromises... use one, and A B and C work but X Y and Z don't. Use another, and it's the other way around... or maybe there's D E and F now. What works for one person doesn't work for another... and yet these are the same model phones. Oh, but wait... now it's passe to say "every phone is different". Like they are? They're the same hardware. But now we just accept for some reason that every Captivate is some random assembly of different chips and so using a ROM is an assumed matter of modem-roulette and deciding what features you want and what ones you're willing to sacrifice.
Why is this "ok"?
It's important to mention at this point that this is absolutely nothing against the hard-working developers here. I don't doubt for a moment that they are doing their absolute best with what they have available to them. It's not that, it's the culture... the community... the mindset. Are we being hypocrites? I mean, if we're just accepting now that every Captivate is unique hardware and no one ROM/modem will work ideal on all of them, why do we hold Samsung to a higher-standard like they themselves could ever produce an official and universal 2.2 firmware for the Captivate where everything actually works for everyone?
Something's not right here. I don't doubt that people get different results with different files... but these are different environments, and the testing not done consistently or scientifically. I don't think it's appropriate to act like the differences come from varying hardware when it's far more-likely that it's differences in other more-random things. Some people are in a primarily 1900 MHz area, some primarily in an 850MHz area. GPS is also environment-specific and someone with a modem that offers below-average GPS performance might report that the GPS is "amazing" simply because they're in an ideal spot. The hardware is the least likely aspect to vary. Surely there must be a solution... a better answer... a potential for a modem that actually works amazing for everyone. Where all bands are supported, GPS works amazing, Audience chip is supported, etc etc.
I just felt the need to vent. I'm not sure what the solution here is... I just feel we've gotten to casual just "accepting" a situation as something it's not, and shouldn't be. One shouldn't have to play modem-lotto just to get basic decent performance from their ROM, or decide what basic features they're willing to sacrifice. I know this is a huge discouragement for me, and why I'm still on stock. I want to flash so badly... but every ROM thread I read through I eventually hit at least one (if not several) deal-breakers, and the casual acceptance of them is just frustrating.
Anyone feel the same way? Thoughts?
I think your over analyizing.....im a flash junkie and I've flashed everything on the forums....I don't use my phone for business so almost every rom I use has everything I need functional...haptic feedback is not a reason for me not to use a rom but camera is.....along with flashing roms I mix matched different kernels and modems.....its all preference.....with the modem situation I just flash one and test it out until I have an issue then move onto the next...I thought jk4 was the best for me until I decided to try jk3. I've noticed I get reception in areas where I didn't with jk4....so ill test this one out for awhile....you can't sit and read until u read that u found the best......u just have to test it out for yourself...it sucks but that's what u get. I feel things wont get better for us until we get our official froyo release by att. Well have our noise cancellation chip working as well as a modem built for att usa. I had better cell service with captivate roms n modems then I do with i9000 ones but the i9000 roms are leagues ahead of any captivate ones

Did you try Serendipity? It seems to do quite well on every item in your list.
I have not flashed for mostly the same reasons as you. It seems that every combination has different things that work and things that do not work. I want every function of my phone to work properly. That includes hardware noise cancellation and proper bluetooth support, which seem to be a major issue on i9000 ROMs/kernels/modems. My biggest issue with Captivate ROMs/kernels/modems is the apparent lack of support for bluetooth voice dialing. Now it is a fair argument that bluetooth voice dialing does not work on the AT&T 2.1 ROM, but it is not a supported feature of 2.1. It is a supported features of 2.2, so why shouldn't I (we) expect it to work? If a feature that is supposed to work in 2.2 does not work, that doesn't give me the best feeling about flashing the ROM.
I came over from the Windows Mobile side and I flashed custom ROMs on my Fuze without thinking twice, but there were never core or standard features of the phone or OS missing in the ROMs I flashed. I had bluetooth + voice dialing, good battery life, good cell reception, good working GPS, extremely good stability, great performance (for the hardware), and good voice quality with working noise cancellation in all the ROMs I ran.
I think that overall the devs here are doing a good job, and I think things will improve after the release of 2.2 sources for the captivate, but it seems that right now, there is a compromise involved in any of the custom ROMs.
I can accept the fact that the current ROMs don't meet my expectations, but when people say, "just start flashing" to people like myself who have higher expectations, it gets a little old. The attitude that only people willing to accept these compromises should be reading/contributing to the xda-developers forum is also annoying. I think it is great that there are people working on custom ROMs and there are people willing to run them with the compromises they have to make, but that does not mean that everyone should just be willing to make those compromises and if they are not willing they should not post.
I have made very few posts in the Captivate forum, I guess it could be said that I have been lurking and reading up on each new custom ROM as it comes out, waiting for one that seems to meet my expectations. I have not been vocal, or complained about the fact that we need to make compromises. But others that ask questions about whether certain things work, seem to get flamed and told to just accept the way things currently are, or they are completely ignored. If the devs don't want to answer questions such as, "does bluetooth voice dialing work," or "how is bluetooth voice quality in this ROM," then they should put this type of information directly in the first couple of posts. The newest Cognition ROM thread has this type of information and I greatly appreciate that DG included it. For most ROMs you can't find out if certain items work properly without reading the first 10-20 pages of posts.
Maybe the main issue for people like me (with higher expectations from my phone) is that good information about what works and what does not work often does not float to the top of the ROM dev threads. I started using xdandroid on my Fuze as my first introduction to Android and each phone that it ran on had a thread and on the first page was a listing of each major functional piece (sound, camera, bluetooth, etc) and whether or not it was working yet. Each developer can do as they choose, but if the status of functional items and known bugs was listed in the first page, it would save on questions and some of the less than helpful responses that the questions cause.
People also have to remember that only a leaked/unfinished Captivate 2.2 ROM has been made available as a base for some ROMs so there's no other choice for a complete Froyo ROM without resorting to i9000 ROMs. Expecting things to work from a unfinished leak is a bit different from having high standards.
GPS is also broken for some people whether they're on a stock ROM or not to begin with, devs can't magically make it work for everyone.
Cell reception is not 100% determined by a ROM, if I flash the "most amazing bestestst rom ever" and live in a remote forest with lead leaves, reception might just suck a little because it mainly depends on location.
No phone is the same believe it or not, maybe unless it's an iPhone. If you want something that works as it should perfectly, you probably shouldn't be flashing ROMs, because they are essentially in infinite beta until a dev doesn't want to work on it anymore. Either stick to the stock ROM, get an Aria or some other unlocked phone, or even an iPhone since that's probably most stable thing out there right now.
The ROM threads grow dozens of pages every hour, and posts will always get overlooked whether they are important or not. It still amazes me that people get confused when they start seeing an H instead of 3G. This is a development community and has several thousands and thousands of users at any given time. It is busy.

For the American SGS phones, I was not trying to suggest that the developers can "fix" the GPS (though it is worth noting that Da_G has made some good progress http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=881941).
I don't completely disagree with many of your points, which is why I am still running the stock ROM. If I had two phones, I would be willing to beta test unfinished software and ROMs, but since I only have 1 phone that I expect to work (or more accurately, my company who pays for it expects it to work) I have not flashed any of the current firmwares that are available.
I think cell reception has a lot more to do with the Radio/Modem than the ROM. If you have a working modem and that modem functions with the ROM, then it should give you the same reception. I think one of the main points the OP was making was that there is no apparent consistency, and some modems work with some ROMs, and not with others. It does not even seem to be accurate to say that any i9000 modem will work with any i9000 ROM, as some combinations cause poor voice quality or other issues.
I do disagree with your statement that "no phone is the same." Any Captivate in the same batch/build should have identical hardware and should function identically (assuming Samsung has good quality controls in place). There is the potential for slight differences between batches, but I can't believe that any of those differences is significant enough to cause software running on the phones to behave differently. If that is the case, there is no way that Samsung can release a working Froyo build, or even a working Eclair build that would function as intended on every captivate. If Samsung was unable to produce identical products consistently, they would be out of business because none of their products would function as intended consistently.
As far as "expecting things to work from a unfinished leak is a bit different from having high standards," I don't think it is unreasonable for better visibility to what works and what does not work in the first page of a ROM thread. I am not saying that I expect everything to work 100% on all ROMs, especially without 2.2 sources, and I am not saying I expect the devs to be able to test every possible things, but I don't think it is unreasonable to hope that as bugs or problems or ROM/Kernel/Modem combinations that do not work are discovered, that information could be made more accessible without reading 100 pages of a ROM thread.
Hopefully most of this is just growing pains as Android is evolving and as we wait for 2.2 sources for the Captivate. For Windows Mobile, much of the OS and functionality of the OS was pretty much set between ROMs. The biggest differences were in the frameworks (Sense vs. Non-Sense, etc) and theming of the ROMs. That is why I have said in the past that if we could get a solid, working AOSP ROM with all drivers, etc for the SGS, it would give a good base for additional ROM development.
Hi all,
I need a bit of advice. My wife and I have had the Captivate since this time last year. We came over from the iPhone 3G to the Captivate and loved the amount of tweaking you could do. From the beginning, I went through 4 phones in the first month with the random shut down issue, but my Wife's was fine for the first six months she had it. She is on her second Captivate now and is having problem after problem. Alarms not going off, random shut downs, wi-fi not turning on/off, phone won't dial a number and won't hang up when you try to end the call, phone takes for ever to start up on a reboot, drops network and won't reconnect without re-starting and so on. Needless to say she is pretty frustrated with it and wants to get something different and is leaning back to the iPhone. I am having some issues with mine all similar to what she is having, but not nearly as often. We are both running the stock Froyo, but rooted.
I have a few questions:
1. Would you suspect this to be a problem with the hardware or something maybe a ROM could fix? If a ROM could fix it, any suggestions for a reliable ROM? (I've flashed ROM's in the past to mess around, but haven't kept up with them in over a year.)
2. Is this a common problem with Android (i.e. not reliable)?
3. If it isn't a common problem of Android not being reliable, what other new Android phones from AT&T are good.
Sorry for all of the questions, and thanks for any input.
Dave
I've been on custom ROMs for a long time now, and I've noticed that they are often faster, have better battery life and depending on the ROM you choose, can be more reliable than stock. I'd give it a try, since worst case, you can go back to stock or trade the phone in anyway.
I'm currently using the Illuminance ROM and it is very good. Pretty reliable, fast and excellent battery life.
Other older roms that I've used are Pinnacle and Cognition. All 3 of these offer a smooth stock experience that's not too flashy with radical themes or anything.
Good luck!
1. ask yourself this questions do u like tweaking stuff, if so go with android. else apple or windows
2. i have captivate for about 15 months now, i have never had random shutdown issues, so random shutdown could be mostly software related. I'm running cyanogen7 and its like new phone altogether. pure android experience
3. new android phones that are coming out are much stable than the older phones, bcoz phones like captivate have been rushed to market to survive the Apples rally.
if u want pure android experience go the Galaxy nexus (the latest android from Google). with google phones u can be assured that your os will upgraded as soon as Google releases latest OS. i have heard pretty good reviews about Ice Cream sandwich
What's Froyo?
A clean install of a hot new ROM will give it new life. It shouldn't be unstable though. Maybe it's all the bloatware and apps installed or some files got corrupted. Backup first but try not to reinstall as much as possible if you go with a new ROM. No system data should be restored on a different version anyway.
If your due an upgrade do so and do some research on new phones as far as fixing problems the cappys always have had minor issues a new rom with a clean install works cm7 or cognition
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
Cm7's battery life is garbage. The cm team themselves will admit that. It doesn't contain the proper hardware drivers from Samsung. you guys might want to mention that before suggesting that to a noob...
op Sounds those problems sound all software related. I would flash a leaked gingerbread stock firmware as a baseline, then if all is good you could stick with that or flash a custom gingerbread ROM over that if you wanted a more tweaked experience.
Agree with what the others have said... try upgrading to a Gingerbread ROM. There are several out there, most all of the JVT ones are very mature and stable. The latest KK4 ones are pretty nice as well but just being released so maybe not the best 1st choice.
I somewhat disagree..I found all the gb Rome to be less than stable, maybe cuz they use so much ram. That being said I put a custom froyo on mine before I donated it to my father-in-law and he hasn't had any trouble out of it. Also, att's policy is if you have went through 3 phones during your warranty period you can get it replaced with another model..you may have to ask.

I have to say, the GB roms lack of stability is directly related to the lack of source code for the captivate gingerbread rom.
If you are looking for a stable Froyo experience go with Andromeda3. Ive been on it for months now and really have enjoyed it.
First, thanks to all of you for the input and advice, I appreciate it.
I did end up flashing I897UCKK1 Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread from the Stock ROMs sticky over the weekend. So far so good. It seems to be working well and the phone seems much more responsive, to the point that I'm thinking of doing the same with my phone as well. I'm going to test it out on the wife's phone for a month or so, but I hope this fixes all of her issues and saves me from having to get her something new.
Thanks again,
Dave
If you like the stock GB ROM, you'll love Illuminance 3.0--very fast, great battery life, and smooth.
Or try pinnacle 1.3 close to stock, fast, and great battery life.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using xda premium
Agreed about Pinnacle--very reliable and a favorite of many.
You might also want to give a try with cyanogenmod 7, I liked it more than other roms. But it may depend on your choice. Thats the beauty of android, you have choices and most of them won't let you down.
Thread closed.

Great, happy you've found your answer.
First off, I understand that there is currently no officially supported ICS for the Inspire 4G, and what I ask may be impossible. This is also in no way criticism of the great developers currently working on ICS for Inspire 4G. I am only looking for the advice and suggestions of this awesome community. Anything helps.
I use my phone all day every day, for school, work, my small business, travel, socializing, pretty much everything. I've been using Android and most of Google's applications since the release of the Nexus One. I am especially dependent on Google Calendar. I've been using the Inspire 4G for nearly a year and a half, and while I have briefly tried every popular ROM available, I have used Absolution the most since its release. Now most developers are working on ICS while Absolution is no longer updated.
I would like to know if there is any regularly updated ROM that would fit my needs? I depend on my phone to be stable, fast, and efficient. I do not need eye candy, visual effects, or other novelties. Because of this, every ICS ROM I've tried is unusable for me. And I don't mean they are just inconvenient to use- every one I've tried is too unstable, too slow, and has too many bugs for me to ever practically use. Even after replacing the broken applications (the new Google Calendar, which I am most dependent on, deletes and changes events at random in, so I'm forced to use a 3rd party app on ICS) the phone itself is only a fraction as efficient as it is without ICS.
I haven't tried every ROM available, only the few most popular ones. Within the last month I've tried Redemption, Unofficial CM9, and aospX. Any advice is GREATLY appreciated. I wish I had the time to try every ROM, but I simply do not.
Thank you.

Sorry to hear none of the ics roms suit your needs. I would suggest staying with gingerbread as it is more time tested and complete. Even when devs get their hands on the new ics kernel source it will still take some time after that to get it all properly ironed out. I personally use lord clockans ics because he typically has a new beta build every couple of days and i use these as my daily driver. I use touchdown for my business email and meetings/appointments that I have on there and have never had any issues other than maybe facebook making my phone reboot once a week at best

I am going to try lord clockans when I next have free time.
I have to agree. If you need your phone as a tool and not a toy then stay with GB. ICS may never be 100% working now so GB is your best bet.
You have to make time. Only you can tell what's good for you! To me, I like redemption and asopx. But if you are worried about stability like the wise men before said! Stick with stock...

I'm surrendering .. as soon as I can i am going to replace my G2x. And I will enjoy smashing it to tiny bits with a hammer as soon as I have a replacement in hand.
My advice: do the same. Give up on this phone. It is not worth it.
Neverless THANKS TO EVERYONE here who works on this unit--you kept me going for a long time and I am grateful.
Almost two years now I have been struggling with this phone ... tried many different ROMs, different basebands, paying attention to how different apps affected the battery, changed around mount positions for external storage, spent time on the GPS configuration, etc., etc.
I found some decently stable configurations--some where almost everything worked. The best was CM7.2 with v21y baseband--usable (~12 hour) battery life, good sound quality, and no battery pulls, overheating, or SODs. However no voice over bluetooth and no call waiting.
Next I found a configuration where bluetooth voice worked but call waiting still didn't work and now GPS couldn't lock.
Then I found a configuration where I had both bluetooth and GPS, and acceptable call quality, but still no call waiting.
At the moment I decided to accept this state of affairs, and the at-best 12 hours battery life, I get ... overheating, random reboots and SODs again!
Ah f**k you Lucky Goldstar. Never again for LG for me--not even if someone gave me a free Nexus 4.
I picked up a Samsung Galaxy a few months ago in the Philippines ... it cost 1/5 the price I paid for the g2x. EVERYTHING WORKS. It is slow, and has a small screen, but again, it JUST WORKS. GPS, bluetooth, battery life, call waiting, etc., etc. It is the LOWEST-END android phone that I am aware of. And yet it kicks the butt of my G2x on its worst day. Even with its low-end hardware I am saving so much time having a phone that just does what I ask of it.
I am not writing this to advertise for a specific phone .. but to share my near-religious revelation with others here: THERE ARE BETTER PHONES! And the G2x WILL NEVER BE ADEQUATE.
My eyes are open and I have seen the light!
Wow, I wish I had spent all the time working on this phone to more productive uses--I could easily afford three new Note IIs by now.
At least I understand the Android OS much more than I ever could have, so that is some silver lining.
All that being said I want to give a THANK YOU to everyone here whose hard work helped me on the way. You rock.
I'm running mokee and have my phone set to restart every night at 5am. Wake up with it feeling snappy. Usually slows by the end of the day, but it's usable.

I feel your pain. It's been a never ending struggle to get this phone running stable. Too many FC's SODs, phone app crashes and slow-motion lag, regardless of the ROMs I've used. Been without HWA too long on custom ROMs, also.
All the efforts from the devs, along with their knowledgeable information and advice, is much appreciated. Through all of the adversity that we had to face with the missing drivers and code, I've learned a lot about the inner workings of the Android system.
As anxious as I am to try JB on this phone, I'd rather have it fully working than having no phone functions at all on a JB ROM. This phone is no longer a priority to devs because it's two years old, which is completely understandable.
I'll be flashing CM7.2 (maybe the nightlies) and will just grit my teeth and tough it out for the next month or two.
I hope to see all of the same devs from here in the GS IV threads, because that's the next phone I'm getting. Then I can retire this G2x and if the code is ever released and a fully functional ROM compiled, I'll flash it, just for the sake of closure.
To be fair, the G2X is a great phone. It's built really well, I love how sturdy it feels, but it's just the software (and LG's Manufacturing) that let it down. Luckily, with our devs here, we got upgrades and fixes for all the crap that LG fails to fix. It sucks that we have to be stuck with the modem that will not let us get a fully functioning radio (Unless our awesome developers succeed in their struggle to, again, do things that LG never bothered to do.) Such a great phone, ruined by LG. The only reason I got my Nexus 4 was because it's backed by Google. I would never buy the Optimus G or any other phone from LG until they have solid software support.

I think that the stock ROM is not perfect (it's made by LG coders after all), but the custom ROMs are much worse and make you have all these issues you described here. I tried lots of customs, but ended up with the last rooted stock from LG, having stablity, battery life, less some eyecandies.
(I don't want to offend any developers that spend their time developing custom roms, but honestly, it's only 'hobby' projects)

But isn't it T-Mobile that is to blame for the software failure of the G2x? LG reps tell you that it's up to T-Mobile whether an upgrade is available? Because I think the P900 has an ICS ROM by LG?
LG still released a phone that overheats and locks up. Even if gingerbread is old now, other phones aren't broken when they're using it.

During my time with the sensation, i pretty much put on every rom/kernal/patch etc and the in the end, im posting this from a stock rom.
Why?
Well, i found that not one custom Rom worked 100%. The CM ROMs especially, with poor camera, poor scrolling and poor telephone.
ARHD became unbearable, with FC's and Permission bugs, the Sense 4 ROMs were slow and on and on.
Coming back to stock, after using ROMs which (apparently ) have been super optimised, I don't notice much difference in performance tbh. Battery life is similar, speed is similar etc.
YMMV on this one, but whatever.
In fact, the stock Rom just works
So, fast forward to two more iterations f the smart phone, and I believe the immense power now available should mean that the "optimization" ROMs, CM etc are becoming pointless. There is ample power to run the stock Rom no matter how bloated it is.
Some exceptions would be a slow roll out of updates from your carrier though.
Anyway, after flashing so much, and reverting back to stock, I'm not going to be in a rush to put a custom Rom on the One when it comes.
Even rooting it, I may hold off for a while. I'm just not sure these days what the point is.
Why knacker up the warranty?
Pah!
Different people have different uses/needs. All custom ROMs pretty much worked on my HD2 (although it's an exception since it originally had WinMo) and all of them work smoothly on the N4. Different devices also have different bugs, so you can't base the entire decision on your experience with only one device. As for why you'd want to flash one if you're OK with performance, the answer is that some of them have tonnes of features and UI enhancements. Take PA over stock 4.2.2 for example, or an AOSP based ROM over TouchWiz.
I have been thinking the same for all the reasons mentioned. I would like Titanium and Nandroids and some status bar themes. But, otherwise, for me, custom roms may not offer much. And, they do seem to have their own quirks. The stock roms and better processors now days can stand on their own for most folks. Having flashed hundreds of roms, there has been many occasions were I did something and said "Oh S--T" I am bricked. Luckily I have always been able to recoup. I am looking at the One and S4 and may root after a bit, but may not flash a custom rom. My One S had no issues running with the bloatware. But, who knows after so much flashing it may be hard to stop.

This is where alot of people get confused. The point of making a custom rom was never for everyday people to be flashing them, They were for developers to try new things and see what they could make happen. Does this break things? Yeah from time to time but that is all part of learning.
That's all true also DK. It does depend what we want from phone and if we want the risks of flashing. I have done it long enough and maybe just getting old and tired. It takes a lot of time to keep up with the roms and not have to rely on others for all your info. Although XDA was/is a dev forum, it has also benefited in member growth with all the people now interested in flashing.
I think it is more likely with the new phones that some will not see the need to flash a custom rom as much as they wanted/needed to say 3-4 years ago.
Either way it is still a personal choice and more than likely I will still flash whether I need to or not--

Oh trust me If it wasnt for the crapware and bloat OEMs added to their devices and the absolute UGLY look to them I may not feel a NEED to flash a custom rom but with the listed things for me it is still very needed. Mainly the UGLY. I can deal with a bit of lag but it better be good looking while it lags lol
agreed--
