Hi,
I occassionally kill an app to free up resources via the built in HTC task manager. But, i also noticed that under the manage apps menu, when you click on an app, some of them allow you to press force stop if they are running.
I am confused though, becaue for example i never use slacker or google maps, yet these 2 apps give me the option to force stop. yet, some apps i use frequently do not have the force stop option (its greyed out).

Freeze or remove the apps that you don't use, as long as they're not system apps. Check and be sure you know what it does before removing. Task manager apps are not really needed for Android 2.2+. I use the one in the pull down on occasions when I know my phone will be on stand-by for a while so nothing is running in the bg. You should be good. TiB is good for removing and freezing apps, but if you don't wanna pay, you can always disable them via adb.

Don't kill apps to free up memory. Android will relocate the memory for you if necessary.
The only time I use the task manager is as a quick way to restart an app.

I sometimes find myself wanting to kill an app that leaves GPS running, etc...

Hi, what is the objection of killing apps via Task Manager in Sensation? I am coming from Windows Mobile and therefore have used to kill apps after closing them.

Basically anything Android 2.2+ handles applications. Closes them after the appropriate period of time. Ends all processes related to the app unless it had a background service that runs.
Task killer abruptly shuts down the app and doesn't let the Android OS do the job. Earlier on 1.5/1.6 days it was definitely needed because Android didn't handle it as well.
If you have to force stop or task kill make sure your task killer isn't set to auto kill. Also I do kill apps occasionally via Force Stop when the app isn't working. Usually facebook app does this at times or words with friends.

It isn't really necessary to "free up resources" in Android. Apps that have been dormant for some time or are unnecessary are closed automatically when memory is required. Often apps that are force closed will simply be reopened by the system, which actually has a negative impact on battery life.
Ok I been using advance task killer since I got android I'm using 2.3.4 I have auto kill on 30mins I use it to save battery, are u guys telling me i don't need it?

You most definitely do not need it.
So i recently updated my phone to gingerbread about 6 days ago and im really irratated as i find all these apps randomly opening when i look at my tak manager usually i have only one app opened and thats the one im currently using although of course i multi task but i suddenly find all these apps open when i never used them,as i wrote this i looked at what has opened since i last stopped all tasks and i find:rom manager,messenger,gallery and weather. Any1 got the same problem or a way to fix this?

Is Normal.
In GB , free RAM is used as cache applications.
Put in memory frequently used applications for quick opening.
No problem, are there but do not use CPU.
Only active services use resources.
they wont bother you, if the idle ram get very low，the system would end some apps.
there is a app called Autostart, it can disable some app you dont want it active after boot up. but use it carefully. a recovery backup might help,if something goes wrong.

If you want to prevent any app from running when you dont want them to, just install from google play "autostarts" its free, and there you choose which apps you want to prevent fron running

i don't have a problem disabling auto start programs.
the problem is apps relaunching themselves, just like Google Play, which runs whenever it thinks it needs to.
background data/storage change/app update/diaper change/my girlfriends has a hang nail...etc
this app along with others are ridiculously intrusive.
i control my phone, not google or some app developer.

Gemini app manager is free and controls autostart properties for app.
If you use it you will see apps such as the play store are set to run when wifi state changes, when you delete an app etc, you can change these settings so it won't start in such situations.
It helps quite a bit.

Tried Genimi, it can be a little hard to navigate its UI but it has a lot of options. Unfortunately Google Play will undo about half of the autorun conditions you set the next time you launch it manually.
yes, i'm also using Gemini app manager, but as spunker88, mentions, google play will reapply it's settings, when it's launched manually.
once again software, doing what it wants...
i want know the google play apps install apk file download from android market ?
it runs in the background and barely uses any memory. it stays running so it can notify you if updates are available as well as to open and load quickly. its not really intruding..
i prefer to update manually
I don't recommend it but I suppose if it's really bugging you you could always try freezing Play Store when you're not using it. You could use App Quarantine and create a widget to freeze/defrost it with 1 click. Not sure if it's going to even work or how this will affect your phone so don't blame me if you screw up your phone.

This is another universal curse of Android.. And sometimes this crap calls itself a service etc to tryto skirt task managers.... This permission needs to be banned from android...
These apps are so small the newer phones don't even leave the developers the standard lame excuse of "quick loading"...
It's my bloody phone.. I'll give permission...
If your app doesn't work right or load quick on a dual core 1.5ghz chipset with 1gig of ram.. YOU DID IT WRONG..

if you actually notice the store hogging ram on a dual core 1.5ghz/1gb ram phone, you are insane.

It's a core Google app. If you want to stop it, root your phone, get a custom ROM, and don't flash Gapps. The phone is set to use Google Play for stuff like this, and barely uses any memory at all.
Stop complaining, and calm down. There are just some things you can't turn off on a phone...you know...kinda like on a computer.
PS: You can set apps to NOT auto-update in the app store settings.

For me it can drain even 0,001% of battery\ram but it's not the point.
Tried both gemini and autostarts.. as today..
Playstore old worked, the new one reset all settings and always on.
Maps work, but if u launch it , it will reset something, and u have to terminate the app from settings,apps..ecc.
With root must be a way to bypass those stupid apps from get permissions ecc..

I'm having problem with "deasapearing ram" Every 2-3 days i've to restart phone completly becouse when i check in working apps settings i've like 40-80 free ram. in use is about 780-820 mb. it does not add up to 1gb anyway. So when i have so little ram to use apps are force to close, mx player, some ****ty family guy app even chrome is closing down. apps like app killer are not helping tehy free like about 10-60 mb. anyone noticed something like me, any advice?

yeah, but this **** doesn't happen to all m2. i hope this is software problem not hardware.

i did it already through pc companion suite. no help at all.
Maybe root and uninstall bloatware can help you with this situation
this problem probaly because of too many background apps
and one more thing .. linux based OS , ram always been used everytime
you can disable some apps like google maps or integrated apps that u dont use
I have the similar problem with my RAM. As 1st, RAM is always at 70% usage.
How can i disable some applications permanently so they do not run by themselves? I dont want to unninstal them, just disable them, is it possible and if it is can u please tell me how to do it in few short steps.
Second thing, beside other apps i have installed Facebook, WhatsApp and CleanMaster app. Every time i go Settings -> Aplications -> Running Aplications, there are these 3 apps always running. I dont know whats causing them to be opened at all times. I think if i open Facebook (for example) even once, it stays up and running in background even if i remove it from that Dock Menu Tab by sliding it a side.
Is there anything i can do to make this stop, and save some of my RAM free?

4.3 is the worst from all versions in terms of memory handling. On top of that it comes very heavy on memory foot-print right after booting up.
After booting up your phone has about 300 - 350 Mb left to work with. Open your Navigation app and your browser, and the memory of your phone is "done". The happy apps reshuffling starts, causing screen lag and app start-up delay.
When a phone app with1 mB in size was considered big, and 5 mB of RAM consumption enormous, than shuffling things around was no prob. Now shuffle a 240 mB Navi app out of the memory, and replace it with that 70 mB home launcher when you are done. Takes the same time and is the same, right? And users have no clue how memory is used, right? And if so many complain about memory handling? But still, Many will tell us "unused RAM is wasted RAM".
What can you do?
- Root your pone and remove all apps you don't need, diligently and consequently
- Greenify user apps, in particular those which you do not need always.
- Rethink if you need to be on Viber, Whatsapp and Skype constanly. If not, greenify.
- Access Facebook from a browser, ditto for other functions and apps where a website is availabe and mostly does the same
- When installing a new app always go for the smaller one that just does what you need to do. Not the one with all the function that you could need, and not the one with more eye candy.
certain apps on android are a no-no. For example, facebook (from what I've heard) and skype use lots of resources and slow down the phone. You should disable or uninstall any app that isn't of use to you. To check the RAM usage of apps and disable them, go to settings -> apps, running will show you current apps, and if you go in all apps you can scroll through them and disable unneeded apps.

Search for an app that lets you manage startup apps on boot. Another way is Greenify, as it unloads apps from memory.
BTW. Cleanmaster is redundant in my eyes.

Just downloaded greenfly on my none rooted nexus 5, seems to work fine however when I select my apps to hibernate then click the button to hibernate them all its ok, but if I go back on my phone and press hibernate again it always re does Facebook and Facebook messenger even if I have not opened them since.
It's like they have reopened themselves.
Any reason for this? It does not do it all the time just at random times.

you are new to android? apps open themselves is the norn, especially terribly written apps like facebook. its designed to open by itself and work in the background. if you kill it, itll just reopen. facebook creates wakelocks that will wake it whenever it wants. you dont like it? root your device, install the disable services app, block facebooks capabilities from constantly waking itself and your device. remembered, with linux, its considered that not used up ram is a waste of ram.
This is one of the reasons why I use the web broswer instead of the app.
Did you enable the service in accessibility?.
As above Apps will wake up the device, if the service is running it should do that automatically,

that's exactly why i only use the browser for facebook! well, that snd facebook seriously draining battery when i didnt open it for a month. its been 3 years since i uninstalled the facebook app. all my devices thank me for it, or for never installing facebook
All of the above! Terrible app. My wife has my Moto X now...nothing at all has changed setup wise, and she brought it from 6 to 7 hours screen time, to 4. All....because....of....Facebook.... App.
