Help...I accidentally mapped the search button! - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Hi,
I have no idea how but I accidentally mapped the long press function of the search button and have done everything possible but cannot get it to map back to the Google voice search I have used for so long and love. Some people don't like or use this button but I love it. Anyways, I don't know what I did but it is now mapped to compose a SMS msg with GO SMS.
Any idea how to fix this without restoring to default?
Thanks!!

Settings>Manage Applications>Go SMS>Clear Defaults

If clearing default or data in go sms don't work than uninstall the go sms app and than press the search button and set up GVoice again. Hope that works

Nope...Did that...No luck
Thank you for the replies!
Unfortunately, I have already done that and nothing. You have no idea how many hours I spent trying to fix this. I did all of that and have multiple root tools that I used extensively to try to remedy this without luck.
I really would like this fixed. Restoring is NOT an option. I spent many, many days modifying and tweaking this phone to my liking.
Now, this all brings up another question which does puzzle me quite a bit...
I love this phone...everything about it. However, if there is just ONE major design flaw, its that damn power button placement. Why the hell did they not put it on the top right? It is right on the other side of the annoying volume rocker and not exaggerating, I hit this rocker accidentally over 20 times a day and keep messing up my volume. It really sucks. I personally keep the volume all the way up and actually have absolutely no use for the volume keys, not even with my camera app.
Now, I did some research and found that there is absolutely no way to disable or change the soft touch keys on the Galaxy S2. Many, including myself, have tired without success. So, why is it that Go SMS Pro was able to make this change and default to launching the compose window?
Is there a way to disable (not just patch) the volume rocker?
Back to the original subject, if anyone has any more suggestions on how to fix that search button, please let me know.
Thank you all,

[Q] Search key annoyances

Hello all:
I have been experiencing a particularly vexing problem with my captivate. At random intervals, the search interface displays on the screen without any of the buttons on the bottom of the phone being pressed. This seems to be particularly true when holding the phone in landscape (playing Angry Birds). My hand is nowhere near the end of the phone with the buttons, so I don't understand how this can be happening.
Any advice/help that can be offered will be appreciated.
T
Happens on mine every now and then too, usually when I'm driving and the officer is mounted on the windshield, so my hands are no where near it.
I've seen other posts about it. I don't think there's any fix except a replacement.

Officer = phone. Oh swype.

capacitive button problem. I have it too but on the menu key. Rare but very annoying. Perhaps its dust?
There are quite a few people complaining about it.
even my search key gives this issue.....isnt there a way to disable that key..??i rarely use it....
btw, wouldnt it be cool if the search key was changed to a camera key for takin pictures.....its way lot easier than focusing and clicking by tapping on the screen...

Hmm, if yours has the problem, it would be rather detrimental to performance if you were to map it to camera shutter, wouldnt it?
Thanks to all. I had searched but hadn't seen anyone that had the same problem (time to brush up on my search skills?). I will consider a replacement, because it really sucks when I have a perfect shot in Angry Birds and the search interface comes up.

My original Captivate had a problem where the Home button would get "stuck".
The phone would start buzzing and going to the Home screen violently and over and over again.
I got it exchanged.
Probably a similar issue.
Yep, same problem here. Although I haven't seen it happen since I went back to stock and did the OTA update through Kies.
Not sure if that actually is why it's not happening though.
you can edit the Melfas-touchkey.kl file and disable the search key
system/usr/keylayout/Melfas-touchkey.kl

You can do better than that; you can assign it to the CAMERA, just replace the text SEARCH with CAMERA in that file and reboot. I tried it, it works, and pressing the key while in camera mode takes the picture! It's quite nice actually. Long press for voice search no longer works, however.

Disable Soft Capacitive Buttons

Since i use vegan tab and have all the soft buttons on the screen at all time (home, menu, back) is there anyway to disable the capacative ones so that i dont actually hit them while holding the tab?
bump ^^^ anyone??? robeet?
I asked something like that earlier, but no one responded. There's a thread under Themes and Apps about Settings Catcher. Maybe a concept like that could be used, in the opposite way (assign invalid activities), to essentially make the keys do nothing?
Jim
This is definitely possible to do.
Use Root Explorer to go to /system/usr/keylayout. I am guessing it's the file gpio-keys.kl in that directory.
For a guide as to how this works, check out this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695936
I haven't tried it yet, but I'm guessing you can map those keys to something like ENDCALL that doesn't have a meaningful activity associated it with it on our tablets. Or maybe there's a null activity or something like that.
You'll have to experiment a bit. I haven't tried any of this yet myself.
hmmm, pull out the device back and unclip it?
Seriously though, I'm not certain. Possibly it's linked to the file /usr/keylayout/tegra-kbc.kl. So you might be able to REM out some of these and it could actually disable the tactile buttons.
How would you get out of a full screen app that hides the status bar?

Yeah i didnt think of that. damn... its just annoying when im in the browser or something and i hit it by accident
I was hoping to find an app/hack that would let me set the duration of a soft key press required to register as a stroke. It would then be easy to make a widget to turn the delay on and off for times when you know you will be more prone to bump the buttons.

I'm bumping this to see if anyone has any ideas on the above or disabling them completely. I (or one of my kids) *always* bump one of the capacitive buttons while using the gtab. It is frustrating, infuriating even, when you're in the middle of something and BAM, you have to start over.
TIA!
If you could get rid of the buttons you can just use button savior. I'm using the zeam launcher in fullscreen and barely ever touch the buttons on the side now

I use 'Button Remapper' to map the hard buttons to 'focus' which effectively disables them. I then use 'Buttton Savior' to provide on-screen buttons.
Works well and ends the frustration of the buttons not being back-lit or accidently hitting them when holding the tablet.
Thank you! I think that will do the trick. Do you use the galaxy tab version?
ETA: just searched the market from my Droid and saw a third vanilla version of button remapper. I will go with the assumption that its this one.

Multitasking look alike???

Hey guys.. i was playing with my WP7-HD2 and found that when you press the back button when on home screen it goes to all you recent apps you opened or edited before....Keep pressing the back button will go further more back! I Think this is because when i wanted to exit an app i pressed the start button(to go to Home screen instantly) and not the back button; so it stays in memory/or recording your steps you did before!
Cool...I didn't knew that!!!
Ok sorry guys...Any mod to transfer this topic into the below one? thanks!

Yes, it's somewhat multitasking, well I would like to get some tiles, about programs I closed or visited recently, but back button is better than nothing :]

Yep, that's why MS decided not to implement 'real' multitasking as what they have done replaces 90% of what multitasking is used for on a phone.
All they need to do is force developers to implement this tombstoning and allow audio to be implemented as a background service.
The problem with this is that applications unload their assets. When you go back into an app or game, it has to load everything back up.
Current solution is idiotic in many cases.
When I'm on Facebook and want to reply to sms, after going BACK everything has to be loaded again. This applies to many situations and is ridiculous basically.
So the current solution replaces about 30% of what is needed on todays smartphone.

I will live with it! No worries...But i kinda like it though... MS WP7 developers lags out of ideas at the moment! (or from way back)
Yeah, unfortunately it's mainly a developer prolem.
Very few are actually implementing the things that makes WP7 really useful:
Push Notifications, App Tombstoning and Live Tiles.
I hope we see more work done on these aspects in the future.

[Q] Development Idea

Was curious if any of you guys were working on, or know of a program that can act as a back button or menu button, on screen. My home row keys are taking a beating, and normally cause to much hand adjustment to use them.
Just a thought.
I was thinking maybe swype like actions for the back button, etc...
I've tried button saviour, but didn't like it too much.
Thanks for reading and replying.
"Softkeys for root users" might be what you're looking for.

Download Button Savior from the Market. Alot more friendly to the eyes and a heck of a lot easier to use than Softkeys. I use it on my Nook as well.
tried softkeys, wow, that is a difficult program to use, but looks great.
I will have to go back to button savior I guess, and make it work.
Thanks for the replies.
Hope this helps you.

Its not hard to use. Its hard to configure properly.
When you install, hit the home button and choose softkeys as your default home. This will allow softkeys to intercept the home button call.
Then, in softkeys, program it so one push gives softkeys and 2 pushes gives you "home" (<--- specify which home app that you want softkeys to call upon double click)
I also put the back and menu buttons (on my Nook Color) in the notifications area to have easy access to them those as well.
Thanks! I just noticed I had a pm, and this is apparently where all the posts, I followed, made apparently get moved to!
I thought I was crazy.

[Q] Does Mesmerize not support Search/Menu long presses?

Hello community, I will admit that I am a Mesmerize n00b but I've been using a N1 for a long time. One feature that I liked (maybe it's just an HTC thing) is that I could long press menu to show/hide the softkeyboard, and more importantly, I could long press the search button to get Google Voice Search.
I have searched around the forums for the last few hours for the keywords "Mesmerize" and "Long Press". I can't figure out any way to launch google voice command from a hardware key.
I don't particularly care if it is the SAME way, I'd just prefer not to have to go back to the home screen and THEN click on an app-- it's harder to do while driving.
I'm wondering if the device does not physically recognize long presses of that button.
I've got SU, EB16, , if any of that helps.
My brother, who works at USCC, says that he got one out of the box and that Long-press search works by default. Mine never did though, even before modding. Perhaps mine has a slight defect?
Ive noticed this, however it's a non issue for me. When you bring up quick search, I just press the mic if I want to voice command. Anyone know of an app that allows you to assign commands to the soft keys? I want to say the dev for 'clear default home' might have a solution. I could be wrong.

I know that you could do it on stock mez, but the modified roms or 2.2 don't seem to support it. Also I can't mute my ringer by using the volume keys, I have to press the power button. Which doesn't matter cause if I'm silencing the ringer I'm most likely not going to answer. All pros easily out weigh all the(like 2) insignificant cons I have experienced.....

There is a market app called Button Shortcut that has been suggested to me but it does not work. It's a non-root app. I tried a similar search and found a root app for hard buttons but it didn't support long presses.
The search continues, thanks for your input.
I thought I would conclude this thread with the following information:
I went all the way back to 2.1, Stock, and the long press indeed DOES work. It is only in the leaked EA11 and EB16 that it does not work for me. I thought I would mention this just in case somebody else notices the same problem and searches for this thread.
Thanks to those who contributed.
Hate to pull this out of the grave, but I've got the latest EC10 PnP installed now and long pressing the search button still doesn't work for me. Also voice commands don't work, but that's probably a topic for another thread.
I don't know, it's maddening that I can't voice command this thing and it makes me want to return the phone.
Any suggestions? I can't seem to find anybody here complaining of the same thing... Thanks in advance.
Have you tried downloading Froyo from uscc to see if it works on their release?
If that doesnt work, there is a thread about "suggestions for roms". You could post your request on there.
