[Q] Why does SMS Backup and Restore create both .xsl and .xml files? - General Questions and Answers

.xml is for the actual restore process that you do on your phone, correct? Then what's the .xsl file for?

Backing up and restoring text Messages on WM5

I used Backup Manager to backup 1) Databases 2) the \Windows\Messaging\ folder and 3) Some files in the \My Documents\ folder
Then I did a hard-reset
Everything got restored but when I open the Messaging application I do not see any text messages.
I did not backup the registry because I thought that was where my problem was, so I wanted to start with a fresh registry.
Did I do something wrong, or did I miss something?

[Q] Extensions of all the file types in a backup file.

I need to develop an application for data processing. For which I might get data as a backup(default Android backup) file. Now, all i will have to do, is to extract and recognize messages, contacts, emails, etc. so for that i need to know the file extensions of all types and also the extension of the backup file of different versions of Android. Hope i made myself clear.
Thanks in advance.

[Q] How can I extract SMSs from my Zune backup?

I have lots of Zune backups on my PC and I want to "extract" only my SMSs.. I opened the backup folder and into this I found the "RestorePoint" folder. Into this folder there is a file called "ActiveID.dat" and another folder which contains the folder "Data", which contains the "real" backup: there are lots of "Data.x.dat" and "Data.x.data.hash" files but I don't know how can I do to extract something from these.. How can I do? Does anyone have an idea?
Currently not possible
It seems that so far nobody has cracked the file format of those backups to extract things like SMS from them. See e.g. this earlier thread:

[Q] Help in restoring whatsapp Database folder

I have recently switched to a new Custom ROM and in the process of doing it have lost the whatsapp DB folder and hence i cannot restore my old messages from whatsapp. Unfortunately i did not make a backup of the folders, have tried few of the data recovery folders but they were only able to restore images and docs but not the db file.
Could someone let me know if there is anyway we could recover the Whatsapp DB folder after it has been deleted.
Currently using
ROM: cyanogenMod 10.1
