So, I purchased my Samsung Galaxy S (Captivate) last weekend. I had it rooted and everything was fine. Then I got rid of some of the bloatware. I wrote a couple of programs for myself to use, so I needed to enable side-loading. I did that-successfully.
First sign of a problem was when I went to the marketplace and it would not download any single app that I tried. So, I went to restore the phone using the backup I made, but some reason it wasn't there.
Then I decided to revert to factory settings. I did a hard reset, but the problem was still not resolved. Then I found a thread on here about Odin 3. I've been trying to use that all night but the best I've gotten is to the File Analysis step. I've tried at least 10 different times.
I'm trying to get everything back up and running and preferably rooted again so that I can use my Titanium backup to restore all my apps and settings.
I'm at my wits end, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Factory reset would not solve any problems that may have been caused by deleting core apps. Is your phone rooted and nand unlocked (baseband) or just rooted? Are you running a custom rom? If so you need to reflash the rom after clearing cache and dalvik cache. If you still have the original rom then you can reflash an official samsung firmware using odin, look for your handsets firmware on www.samfirmwares.com
Other than that you could try finding out which apps are needed and using root explorer you may be able to fix the version you have. If the market is your only issue then try clearing data and cache settings/manage apps/market and download manager (two different apps)

How did you root your phone? Did you install a custom ROM yet? What bloatware did you remove, and how did you go about it?

Ok. In the wee hours this morning I finally got Odin to work and now everything works as it should. I switched computers and the program worked right away. Intersting tidbit though, I accidentally left the sim card in during the reflash and I had no ill effects. I'm actually wondering if that helped me.

nenol, I used the one touch root. I have not installed a custom rom and I don't remember exactly which of the programs I uninstalled. I used Titanium backup to both backup my apps and to delete the bloatware.

There are very few system apps that are not needed by the system, titanium only backs up data by default. Be careful what you delete and always research first

atrix - question about factory reset - root and installing unknown source

so after had to do a restore from titanium backup my home and search button stopped working as well as my lockscreen. i don't know why but apparently its a common problem. therefore i had to do a factory reset on gladrooted 1.57. now, i still see superuser and installing again tb it gave rights. so i'm assuming i still have root access? however i can't install from unknown sources. does anyone know if i can enable that? can i just run the afterupdate script again to get this back or do i have to go back to 1.26 and redo everything? Thanks!

[Q] Comprehensive Tutorial on switching to GB / CM7

I am overjoyed to see that there is finally an official gingerbread update that I can flash, and then a CM7 for this kernel, that doesn't have any bugs that are too annoying. However, it's been a while since I became an expert on flashing my old LG Eve. Is there a thread somewhere that outlines exactly how to do this for this exact phone and mod?
I've got a D2G, with Fission ROM. the phone is unlocked and rooted. I have an original ROM saved to flash to the phone if need be. Everything I would ever need is backed up using Titanium Backup. I've downloaded the GB update and CM7. I think I'm ready to go.
Questions:
- Is there a thread that answers all this already?
- Am I going to run into any problems being unlocked or rooted?
- Does the phone revert back to being locked once the new GB is installed? That would not be good considering I'm in Canada, not on Verizon. I bought my phone unlocked so I don't know how to just unlock it again.
- I remember using nandroid before to make a complete backup of the contents of my phone so that if I screwed up I could just go back to it seamlessly. Same thing this time around?
- I'm not completely illiterate here though, so I'm going to give it a go and you can just correct me where I am wrong. First, put the CM7 and GB files on the SD card. then do a nandroid backup of the phone. Clear data, clear cache. Then use clockworkmod to flash the GB update. then use clockworkmod again to flash CM7. then use clockworkmod again to flash gapps. Start up phone, do a complete restore with Titanium and I'll have all my apps and settings, call history and texts back. I'm probably wrong somewhere in all this, but where?

You will need to SBF to stock to be able to install the update.

Ok, I read these all over about 5 times. So in a nutshell, these are the steps:
- use rsdlite to put your phone back to the stock firmware 2.4.330
- unroot and remove cwm
- use android recovery to install gingerbread 4.5.607
- root again and install cwm again
- use cwm to install cyanogen and gapps.
Correct?
Also, I am running fission. According to my system info it is firmware 2.4.3. I would rather skip step 1 and just install gingerbread. I am guessing I can't, but please confirm.

You don't need to unroot and remove CWM after flashing the SBF.
Otherwise everything's correct.
You cannot install the official Gingerbread firmware update onto a phone that is not running stock unrooted 2.4.330 without CWM and with all bundled software intact.
Note: if you need to backup your applications and configuration data, you can do so with CWM. Make a backup under Fission, then perform all those steps above, and once you're running CM7 on 4.5.607, use CWM's advanced restore feature to only restore /data.

So here I am in Gingerbread on my D2G (already further than I thought I'd get!) and you would think it would be smooth sailing from here... except I can't root it now! Is there a different technique for rooting in Gingerbread? I used Z4 before, and it worked in seconds.

OK, I figured out how to root using another thread. and when i am in adb shell I get "#" and not "$" after entering a string of commands.
But, apps think that I'm not rooted. All I need is to install CWM, but it runs into errors, presumably because I am not rooted.
The phone is in some sort of weird half-rooted state.

really weird experience with rooting. I realized that I hadn't done the additional steps where you push superuser to the phone and a couple other commands. So I did that, and then root check said i was rooted. I rebooted, and adb shell was acting like I wasn't rooted! yet root check still said I was. I was able to flash CWM and reboot, and then install CM7. Everything seems great!
except, right from the start I was getting repeated FCs for com.android.phone.
I remember that there's an issue with needing to reboot after switching to GSM... so I'm trying that now. Let's hope that stops the FCs.

So what ended up happening was, I rebooted and stopped getting the FCs for the phone after switching to GSM. So that is good. However, aside from the two minor bugs that I was prepared to live with, this is happening now:
- I have phone and SMS service, just no data. Wireless works fine, and so do GPS and Bluetooth to my knowledge.
- When attempting to select a network to register on, I get the dreaded “Your SIM card does not allow connection to this network” message. I have tried doing this with data/roaming enabled/disabled and with “only 2G” selected. I have also tried a couple of tips I found online such as removing the battery for 15 minutes and also getting a new SIM card.
- At first I was able to enter new APNs, but they wouldn’t save. I hit menu, then save, but it goes back to the APN screen and none are listed. Now, what happens is, if I hit menu, then “add new apn”, nothing happens.
I went into the telephony.db file to manually enter my APNs, and it seems that they are already there, which is good. I re-entered them all manually using sqlite anyway. This did not work. I also noticed that Verizon was listed with a “1” in current, which probably means that Verizon is my current APN. So I removed that 1 and placed it on all my rogers APN entries. Still, nothing is saved at the APN screen in settings, and I can’t enter them through that screen, either. And no data.
Suppose it turns out that this is just a bug with CM7 right now and it’s unusable for me. Obviously I don’t want to go all the way back to Fission on Froyo when I can use gingerbread. How far back into this process do I have to go? Can I just flash GB and it will overwrite CM7?

Did you make a CWM backup of your freshly installed Gingerbread? If so, just restore.
If not, I don't see how you're going to “just flash Gingerbread” without SBF'ing to 2.4.x.

Well, I have done a lot of testing and troubleshooting. I went back to the start of this whole process, and I backed up my APNs and fully tested the phone at every turn, and my conclusion is that CM7 is not friendly to APNs. There was no problem with stock Froyo or stock Gingerbread. With the working APNs that I had, I was able to use data on both. Once CM7 was installed, it was a no go.
I used a couple of apps to backup my APNs both in Froyo and Gingerbread prior to installing CM7, and when CM7 inevitably didn't allow me to use data, I tried to restore my APNs using these programs as well. They say that they worked, and it's true that if you go into root explorer the APNs are there as you entered them or restored them using a program. But it seems these APNs are not going to work unless you actually see them at the APN page in settings. And nothing I have tried up to this point has been able to make any APN show up at that screen.
I think the “Your SIM card does not allow connection to this network” message at the network operators screen, as well as my inability to enter APNs, are 100% related. I also bet there is a simple solution to it!
If anyone has any ideas about how to make an APN stick, and how to force a phone to start using it, please let me know. I'll also post this at the CM7 forum.

[Q] Best full backup for non-rooted tablet

Hi guys,
I just bought the TF700T and I'm loving it. However, I find that restoring my tablet to my own specification after updating the device is a bit tiresome. Now the reason I'm doing the factory reset is because I read online that THAT'S what you're supposed to do after updating the device (if that's not the case, feel free to let me know). Regardless, I'm hoping that there's an app out there (paid is perfectly fine) that will restore my device to my original configuration after a factory reset. Things that I'd like it to do are as follows:
1) Automatically re-download all my Google Play apps. I have other android devices, so I'd need the app to remember which apps were installed on the Infinity, and then download them after the reset. Also remembering their custom settings would be nice, too!
2) Backup media folders that I designate
3) If possible, restore widgets that I had set previously (though not necessary).
Lastly, I don't have root access and don't really plan on doing it.

if you are on stock unrooted ice cream and are trying to go to stock unrooted JB then you shouldnt need to do a factory reset. it should DL the update over the air and then install over ICS while keeping all your apps and files as they are.
but if you facotry reset, it will all be gone. titanium backup will do what you need, only if you root.

Thanks for your reply. The only reason I'm doing factory resets is because of a "guide" that purports that doing so will ensure flawless update. I personally do not know for sure.

You should do a factory reset after you manually downgraded the firmware. If you just accept the OTA updates, you should never need to reset. Which "guide" was that?

Oops I can't post links yet, but it's over at the transformerforums. Just google "How to update your firmware OTA - incremental changes & full OS updates"
But if you say it's not necessary, then I won't do it. Too much of a hassle for me to reconfigure all of my apps over something as small as an OTA update.

[Q] No notifications after Titanium Restore after factory reset

Ok, let me start by saying that I fully expect that I screwed something up, but here goes...
My 4G had stopped working and I decided now was the time to root and unlock my phone, since Verizon recommended a factory reset to fix the 4G issue. I rooted and unlocked my Jelly Bean OTA using this great thread and installed Titanium Backup to get a full backup of everything. I ran the factory reset (that was probably how I screwed something up) and (I think) reran the root and unlock steps (maybe didn't need to). Then, I restored everything using Titanium (pro version). No surprise really that 4G still didn't work (subsequent new SIM took care of that issue).
But, even with the "bad" SIM and the new "good" 4G-capable SIM, I'm not receiving ANY notifications for my apps. Nothing for Gmail or Google Voice. In fact, those apps actually seem to require opening them and pressing on the refresh icon to actually receive new emails/text messages. I have everything set to autosync and to provide notifications.
Any idea what I screwed up and how I can fix it? Since I've got a good backup of everything on an external microSD card, I'm wide open to suggestions here.

That sounds sketchy. It doesn't sound like you did anything incorrectly. Here are my suggestions...
Make sure your Google account is set to sync
In recovery, clear cache and dalvik cache In recovery, under advanced, fix permissions
If all that doesn't work, I may try another full factory reset. Then in TiBu only install apps (without data), and then restore only select app's data individually.

This exact thing happened to me. I was stressing out big time - even thought it was the ROM I was running that was messing things up. I was constantly sending myself test emails and waiting to see if they would be pushed to my phone (GMAIL).
The problem was my Titanium Backup Restore. If possible, do a factory reset of your phone - with whatever ROM you like. Before restoring your apps and data, try manually adding your gmail account and send some test messages. I'd be willing to be you will receive push notifications.
If so, try restoring your backup but uncheck and gmail related items. This solved my problem - let me know how it works for you!

I got antsy before I was able to see these messages and went ahead and flashed back to full stock. Verified all notifications are working correctly, and proceeded with all the OTA updates to get me back to Jelly Bean. Now, I'm going to re-root and unlock. I'll restore selectively on apps and not restore Gmail or Google Voice, though it really did seem like ALL notifications were somehow stopped.
I'll post back with my results.

It wipes the /data partition. Basically all user apps+data.
You will remain on the same ROM, retain root and your bootloader will still be locked :thumbup:
