[Q] Lost my Captivate, now what? - General Questions and Answers

I lost my Galaxy S Captivate on the weekend ...and don't feel like buying another one that old, nor do I want to splurge on the new Galaxy Nexus at this point.
Since I'd been intending to keep my Captivate until the end of my AT&T contract this year and then switch to Verizon, I haven't been following other Android phones very closely in the meantime. It would be nice to step up from the Captivate to hold me over until October on AT&T, preferably to one with good ICS development going on here at XDA. What's the best bang for the buck these days?
(I'm "stuck" using an iPhone 4 for now and the lack of Swype, for one thing, is already driving me crazy).

[Q]Dilemma! Eris Crapping! What to replace it with ?

So I have a bit of dilemma.
I have 2 months left on my contract with Verizon and this Eris.
I can get an employee plan with AT&T and T-Mobile for around $30/month on any other Android.
I wanted to wait till Motorola/Tegra 2 phone this holidays, but it looks like the Eris is not going to stay well till then.
I'm not sure what to do. Here are my options -
1) I really like the Galaxy S phones, but the GPS issues are killing me, I'm not sure if they are ever going to be fixed. Plus Samsung upgrade path, I don't know if they will get either get android 3.0 or beyond.
2) I liked Droid X, but the lack of any custom ROMs till now have lessened my interest in it.
I can probably buy a 2nd hand Galaxy S for around $200-250 if somebody sells and wait for the next best phone this year end.
there arent any galaxy s phones for 200-250 .... ur best bet is a good ol' hd2 w/ android

2011 Android Phones

Hey guys, I'd like some recommendations on what phone I could get in the first half of next year. I've had a T-mobile G1 since 2009, currently running CM 6.1 RC1, my contract is up with T-mobile around March of 2011 and I'm interested in upgrading from the old G1 to something "nicer". What I'm looking for at this point is a bigger screen, fast processor, more internal memory, "good" camera(considering it's a phone), and most important of all: ability to root and run custom roms. As far as carrier choices, I'd be inclined to stay with T-mobile(because of their prices) or maybe verizon, even though Verizon is on the pricey side. Right now the two phones catching my attention are the Galaxy S(t-mobile), the HTC incredible(verizon), and the Evo 4G(Sprint), but 6 months from now there could be newer/better phones. Since I'd be renewing or starting a new contract, the phone will be subsidized, so the cost of a "new" phone shouldn't be an issue. What phones out there should I look into and which upcoming phones should I look forward to?

You need to ignore this train of thought. Whatever you buy, whenever you buy it there will ALWAYS be a new / better phone just around the corner.
Personally, and this is only a personal opinion I'd avoid the Galaxy S and stick with the HTC phones. Why? Just read the threads about the issues and I couldn't help notice the vast majority of issues mentioned in the apps market are Samsung owners. Just my opinion / observation mind.

htc merge or htc mecha
Im using a galaxy and have no problems with it. Froyo runs flawlessly and the screen is like no other. Plus 5 finger multitouch, best video chip, Great camera, and 16gigs built in music is beast.
Sent from the Bermuda Triangle.
The Evo is now a lower end phone compared to the high powered monsters coming out but i stick with it cause its just an all around great phone dont have any issues and has a very very active community dedicated to making it better and better i almost feel like a nexus owner from how much love this phone gets. Id definitely recommend an HTC phone.
well, when I mentioned the better phones coming out in about 6 months I was only talking about how they could be better than what's available now. Meaning that I'd be inclined to buy what's "hot" at that point, I wasn't contemplating putting myself in an endless loop of always waiting for "the next 6 months".
Back on topic. Today I did some reading on the G2, I saw that there's people pulling off some insane overclocks quite successfully on it. I just find it a bit disappointing that it doesn't have FM radio or dual cameras, and it seems like it doesn't have multitouch either, which is quite odd for a new phone. I also went to a t-mobile store to see it in person, it was a very nice phone to be honest. The galaxy seemed to have a VERY nice screen though, quite eye-catching.
Kinda leaning towards the G2 at this point. I spoke with t-mobile and I was told that I'd be eligible for a subsidized upgrade as soon as January 10th, so I may be looking for a phone much sooner than thought.

Looking to get a new phone

Hey, I was lookin to get a new phone after my samsung vibrant got broken, I was thinking of getting the sensation at the 549.99 price from a tmobile store, but was also considering talking to my mom about getting an iPhone 4 at the 199.99 price and using the extra ~$400 to help pay for service on the new network (don't want to get it on tmobile because I couldn't live with edge all the time lol..) I was using my sisters iPod for the time being and it runs smooth and such and I'm liking the speed of it even though it's only the 2g one so I know the iPhone 4 would be much faster. What would you consder I do, I had the vibrant for about a year so I'm use to android but all my friends have iPhones and play there iPhone games together lol just looking for opionions on the matter.
Tl;dr - htc sensation or iPhone 4
Join your friends, get a iPhone 4
Dude,
I just got rid of my iPhone 4. And am SOOO FREAKIN HAPPY.
I had iPhones since the original roll out. While it may seem all cool and sexy be prepared to enter Apple's iron fist. Even jailbroken you ALWAYS have to be ready for Apple to update the firmware and if you aren't careful you end up in the same boat. Un-jailbroken with a phone that Apple wants not what you want. I'm using the G2x. And while there are some.flaws with the stock phone they can be overcome.
I also switched to simple mobile for my carrier. $60.00 monthly for unlimited everything. You wont touch that with att.
Say no to Apple my friend.

Ya I was thinking about that i've always been against apple and there bland phones (Android has more eye candy IMO) and actually convinced my sister and her boyfriend to get androd tablets (galaxt tab 10.1 and moto xoom respecetivly,so I'm prly gonna end up getting the sensation.
Bit ot from the op but how might I bargain down the price/get free assecorys fr the tmo reps?
I was going to go with the G2x, it has quality control issues. Then it was the sensation, it has the locked bootloader nonsense.
Depending on if HTC unlocks the bootloader shortly, or devs find a way, will be the deciding factor on the sensation. And I mean in the next couple weeks. If not, then I'm waiting on the next Nexus phone that's coming this holiday season with ice cream sandwich. It's going to be a MONSTER. Actually, I think I'll just wait..

Upgrade soon, what would you do?

So I am up for an upgrade July sixth, yet I got an email from VZW telling me I could get one now? In any case, I am one if the lucky grandfathered customers with a family plan for me and the Mrs (she got the 4GB...didn't listen to me and waited to get a smart phone too late!). Has VZW announced web they will be forcing us out if the unlimited plans yet? And what benefit would I get on waiting until July if they will give me the 2yr renewal price now?
Next thing is, what phone would you grab? Part of me is thinking the inc4g for the s4, and removable battery/sd card. Then there is the razr maxx(HD? Battery life would be nice to have), rezound, nexus...what phone would you guys be looking toupgrade to these days? I wasn't too do it before this nonsense with caps to lock in the unlimited for at least two more years, but there aren't really any phones that are jumping out at me. too bad the one series isn't hitting on VZW as the camera chip sounds like it would be great, and I'm kind of tired of the Sammy code BS keeping us at least a generation behind in software. How much progress had been made on the moto boot loader?
I don't think any of the newer Moto phones are really that friendly, but I would just jump on some of the phone forums for particular Moto devices you might be interested in to make sure.
I doubt that Galaxy S III will be available until after the unlimited is gone.
Honestly, the 3 options I would consider are:
HTC Rezound
Galaxy Nexus
HTC Incredible 4G
You can also just sell the device and use your Droid Charge if you don't feel like diving into the other phone. If you are going to choose another phone and use it, I suggest picking the device that suits your preference.
The HTC Rezound has S-Off, ICS leaks that work well, and is a nice phone.
The Galaxy Nexus has AOSP, and is a pretty nice phone.
The Incredible 4G will probably get some development love and will be a nice phone, albeit with a lower-res display.
I'm just drawn by the huge battery on the Maxx. leaning towards the rezound right now. Thinking I can pick that up, flip the buds for around half of my upgrade cost, keep my charge, then flip the rezound when the razr HD/gsIII (if they fix the good damn radio problems! ) finally hits. Something tells me the unlimited plans are going to be gone before the next wave of releases, but I'm thinking I'll play the waiting game and see if anything gets marked down between now and the announcement that we are officially getting bent over by big red.
Any

I'm actually sitting on an upgrade now. I'm hoping the S3 will be released before the "bend over " (lol). I'm just waiting to hear some more details on effective date and if we're def. subject to the change. I'm so fed up with Verizon for other reasons too, though, that signing another contract with them aggravates me... My only options are big red or us cellular though...
Tweaked has me happy with my phone though so that's why I don't have a sense of urgency to upgrade now.
I'm happy with my phone for the most part. Battery life could definitely be better, and the GPS (out lack there of) has beef annoying me lately. I just moved and kind of need it to find my away around. I just know that I will definitely be taking advantage of my upgrade before I have to lose unlimited. It would be stupid not too. Maybe I just grab whatever is getting the best price on Ebay/craigslist and flip it. Then use that money to grab something more worthwhile in a few months.

[Q] Which device to choose on Verizon?

I looked at some of the similar threads but they are old and devices change so rapidly so I am starting a new one.
I am looking for some thoughts, opinions, etc on a new device. I have to buy my device on Craigslist, eBay or somewhere because I have an old Verizon plan with unlimited data and can't upgrade without losing my plan and paying their upgrade fee.
I have been using a Toro Nexus on Verizon for about a year. I have been running CM10 and making updates as they are released. Recently my phone took a header out of my truck and now the screen is cracked. So, it is probably time to get something more up to date.
A couple things I am looking at evaluating are:
ROMS and development love available for devices. Which ones get the most love?
If I get something unlocked as in straight from Google like the Maguro would I be able to get a radio which works on Verizon?
Cost is a consideraton as well. For example I like the price of the S3 right now compared to the S4 on CL.
Any thoughts, opinions, facts, guidance, etc would be awesome!

the Galaxy nexus is a great phone it saddens me to see that you would like another phone. but im not you so lets get start with phone shopping shall we?
Google
I can see that you like all the rom and development for devices i happy for that!, most of the time you would want one of googles flagship phones that is plain ol stock android (nexus s, galaxy nexus, nexus 4 etc..) googles is so great to us since its stock android its much easyer to flash roms and put other goodies on our phones! i have heard the nexus 4 is one of the best phones around right now (not to mention the new white nexus 4 thats coming out soon with Android 4.3!) so if its on your provider i would recomend that from google!
Samsung
So from what you said you want a phone around the price of a S3, from that right there i would recomend a S3! Samsung does a great job with their phones its not the same stock android like the galaxy nexus they have spiced android up to what they call touchwiz which is a very smooth version for their launchers. a S2 might sound old but even that would be a great phone (i dont know about the specs galaxy neuxs might be a little newer so S3 might be better to get). rooting should be very simple all i had to do for my S2 was to flash a pda file from odin so its again easy to be able to join in on all the development. i think i have heard that the S3 (and maby S2) is getting alot of Goodies from the S4.
LG
i have only had some LG phones and in the past they werent so good but their newest flagship the Optimus G Pro is sposed to be aso good as the HTC one and S4 i dont think LG has their own type of launcher such as samsungs touchwiz, htcs Sense, or motorolas motor blur. so that probably means stock android and pretty easy to root and flash stuff.
HTC
the HTC dream was the first android phone, all of their phones are amazing i have had many of their devices, sense is a very smooth, sense 4.0 and up is sposed to be great. the One and its new blinkfeed feature i have heard can get old within a month or two so im not sure. about rooting with htc phones can be a pain. its different between each phone my droid incredible i had to unlock the bootloader turn s-on off downgrade just to be able to get root and cwm and its all a big pain, htc just dosent want us to screw with it maby. for my htc inspire 4g i had to just only unlock the bootloader and could flash a root from there but still was a pain, so if you can deal with some of the fears of easily bricking your phone you can try these phones!
there are alot of (im just going to call them third party but they arent really) third party phones such as huawei, ZTE, kyocera that some are deff better phones from these people that are better than the galaxy nexus just ask if you would like me to explain them!

Thank you for all the info. Much appreciated. The Galaxy Nexus (Toro) is a wonderful phone. I believe it is the longest running in my pocket. It broke my heart when it took a swan dive out of my truck Sunday. I would absolutely go with another of these. The question on that topic is could a guy get the Maguro to work on Verizon's CDMA network? I don't know that much about the hardware but I'd LOVE to try Ubuntu Touch.
There is a local guy who has an S3 advertised on CL for $175. I'd have to evaluate that guy first though. Would I be as happy with the development on the S3 as I have been on the Toro?
