Updating a rooted GN - General Questions and Answers

Ok, im new to everything android and everything nexus (im glad i left the IOS) anyways.
I have GSM model Galaxy nexus on ICS 4.0.1 and i rooted it the day i got it using the method from this link : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1392310
I used the 1 click for everything option in the MS-DOS screen.
So my question.
If i want to update to ICS 4.0.3 (which i do) should i re-lock the boot loader/un-root or should i just wait for a pre-rooted update file.
one more question.
Should i need to un-root re-lock my GN in-case i want to bring it back i've been researching and the most popular ones seem to include extracting a series of files to the same folder where fastboot.exe and adb files are located (maybe someone here already knows what i'm talking about). Thing is i don't know where these actual folders are located nor do i know where the fastboot.exe file is located. HELP

Yes, you should unroot your phone and keep it that way. All it would take is 5 minutes of research to find what you need. That is the problem with this 1 click bull****. It allows people who have no knowledge of their phone, adb or fastboot to root and unlock bootloaders when they probably shouldn't be doing so.

You can leave it rooted if u want but if u have a custom recover for example clockwork mod installed it will brick your phone so on anyphone always flash ur recovery to stock before accepting an official update.
sent from an HTC sensation on CM7 alpha #10

i dont really have much on it yet so erasing everything is not much of a bother. However i did install clockwork and when i tried back-up it said that the phone first needs to be rooted then it told me i dont have a superboot file =(

Weird.

G2x 2.3.3 root question

Hi,
I dont know if am being really stupid or not but this is my first android device and first time rooting.( i have searched for hours now trying to find an answer)
So i am trying to root my Lg G2x running GB 2.3.3 using this link :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255214
so as of now i am on Step 2...what i dont get is when i click the link on step 2 it says to download ALL of these NVIDIA drivers and everything. All i did was downlooad the One Click CWM
Another thing this link does is send me to ANOTHER link saying that you have to ROOT first?
So from my previous knowledge i thought you could only "flash" the CWM if you were already root ( or maybe thats only for the ROMs)
alright then if thats the case...the directions of the original link just says to download and unzip...but do i put that root folder onto my phone(i read this from another link that someone else posted about)..The reason i am asking this question is because when i tried to go to Step 3 it said to Hold Volume and Power to boot CWM but nothing happened obivously bc 1. the directions say to plug the phone into computer at like step5 and 2. the files are on the computer
So in conclusion i guess i am just trying to make sure that i dont brick my phone by asking these lame questions
1. do i have to take those unzipped files and put them onto my Phone( more specifally, my sd card or phone?)
2. What about for the CWM download.. do i just download the One Click thing and ignore the other directions??
You have to do the one click thing first to install Clockwordmod with NVFlash.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
Then you boot into Clockwordmod Recovery and run my booting zip.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255214
In that thread just download the root zip and put it on your sd card or in the internal memory of your phone. Flash the CWM recovery and then boot into Clockworkmod Recovery by holding down volume down and power until fancy LG logo shows (about ten to fifteen seconds). Find the menu option to flash a zip from sd card or internal memory (wherever you put my rooting zip). Select it, flash it and reboot when finished.
Presto. Done. You are now rooted.
THANK YOU!!!
I GOT IT YAY i AM ROOTEd
i was just overreading and kept reading every word on the posts lol when all i had to do was follow the APX driver installation, FLASH the cWM , and then BOOT IT!!!
THANK YOU!!!!

Flashing CWM and rebooting does not root your phone. You have to flash the root zip also, or flash a rooted rom.
Ok i am completly lost trying to root my g2x. I'v tried downloading the flasher yet nothing. I just need a step by step on doing this. Thanks!!

The original thread for the one-click flasher in the development section is one of the best step by step posts ever made on XDA. It even has a link for a video tutorial. If you cannot follow that then I suggest you stop trying to root your phone. There is no reason for anyone to make another step by step guide. To find the thread try the search button. There are also links to it in numerous other threads.
Are their roms on here that are bug free and stable for daily drivers?
Im coming over here from a HD2 which is not a native android phone. And I didnt mind the bugs in android.
But now I have a g2x and it is bug free though I really wish it had 2.3.5 but oh well this phone is still bad ass.
So what im wondering if I should just root to keep it stock and do lil mods or flash the whole cwm Process so I have a back up. If I ever need it.
Thanks in advance.

I've kept mine stock for that reason, but I did root it. After experiencing custom roms on my Nexus One, A71 variant and others, I would have to say the frustrations stuff being perpetually broken, bugs and the monotony of daily flashing (CM7 just never stops) whatever small benefits the custom roms have (i.e., eye candy, additional settings, etc.) is just not worth the frustration and danger of soft-bricking the phone (I have hard bricked one also) to me. My Nexus One (gave one to wife when I got the G2X but then got another one at a steal) has gone through updates to 2.3.4 and 2.3.6 (yesterday). These updates seem to be mostly internal fixes for stuff. The average user (or even advanced) is not going to notice any difference in using the rom. The only exception to that is that in 2.3.4 Google removed the need to log back into your Gmail account(s) after changing sims. They said that was a minor benefit at a greater annoyance and the "feature" most complained about by world travelers. Other than that the Google apps get updated and even 2.2 devices are basically running the same Google apps as 2.3.X. So based on what you said above, I would suggest keeping it stock and simply rooting it. You definitely want to change recovery to Clockworkmod to make backups and the fact that going into stock recovery on this device does a factory reset (how stupid was that LG).

Thanks J you have been very helpful in my transition from hd2 to g2x"im still flashing hd2 I love playing with sense 3.0 and 3.5" But this phone is amazing. Ive rooted it and added cwm but have not flashed any cutom rome I like stability over newest features.
Is 2.3.3 the most recent update for our Phones?
Yes and we're darn lucky we have 2.3.3. No other 2X variant worldwide has received any update love from LG. They are all still on 2.2.x. Lawsuit in U.S. seems to be what forced LG into releasing the G2X GB update.

Hey J
If this is the wrong place to ask please pm me but, would you mind letting me know what tweaks you have done "if any" you have done to your stock rom?

[Q] I need help

I tried to install ICS on my Nexus S and I got as far as unlooking the bootloader. For some reason CWM will not install. Now I just want to lock the thing back so I can get the offical update. Can someone help please?
how did you unlock ? then just do it backwards
I used a tutorial. One click root v3.0 from qbking77 on youtube.
They do not have one step nexus s unroot just the 4g one.
I had the same problem with CWM recovery in (NS 4G that is) but this post helped me
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19531979&postcount=30
just rename the file "install-recovery.sh" which is in the /etc folder. You can only access it with a root file manager (rootexplorer $4 on the market)
make sure your new file is not ending with .sh
When is the ICS OTA coming to NS4G? I doubt anytime soon when Nexus Galaxy is not even out yet.
It says my phone my phone is my phone does not appear to be rooted. Can I get regular OTA without the bootloader being locked?
So....does anyone know?
bro , full pakage ROM only few days later after OTA , so why don't you just directly flash ROM instead of OTA ? just few days , and now you are sucking with this problem
O.O
OK, Well I am new to all this. How would I flash once it comes out?

[Q] ALL steps to root Motorola Xoom 4.0.4?

So I recently got a Xoom and would like to root it. I can easily search through forums and follow instructions, but I want to be sure on what I have to do. I've rooted and flashed several Android devices already, so I'm no newbie, but once I bricked an Atrix so since then I've always been super cautious.
So now.. how do I root and install CWM on the Xoom? It's on 4.0.4 OTA.
Do I have to unlock the bootloader first?
Specific references to threads and step by step instructions preferred. Thank you!

Yes, you will have to unlock first. There's a bit to set up first, but if you read the instructions and get everything you need set up in one place it's pretty easy. Also, it's actually hard to really brick a Xoom. A few have managed but it's not easy.
Try this guide...everything should still work fine, and it explains a lot

Good luck!
Hello Everyone im new to the boards here
I'm Trying to root my Friends Xoom for him. He told me he already started the process and unlocked stuff but cant flash anything or succesfully root. I dont know what he actually did and to be honest neither does he..... * put a gun in my mouth haha*
So my question is can i just follow the guide posted and start from the very first step and redo everything and still be ok ?? He has it updated to OTA ICS 4.0.4 I found several guides for 4.0.3 but im not sure if those instructions would still work if anyone could clarify this for me i'd greatly appreciate it

I also had a problem after unlocking. It unlocked fine, but then I couldn't flash CWM through fastboot. My problem was the Application Variable thing, I assume. What I did was go to the platform tools folder (which for me was C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools ). I held shift and right clicked Platform Tools, then pressed "open command window here" and then I flashed CWM through fastboot in that window. Just make sure the CWM image is in the Platform Tools folder, along with fastboot.exe.
If you have any issues with that, PM me and I'll try to help.
omg Frozen thank you so most for that post i literally had the same problem CWM would not flash till i did exactly what you said in the last post thank you soo much greatly appreciated
There is one VERY important piece that is left out of most threads.
The newest Xooms that were release overwrite CWM files upon reboot unless you take specific steps to make sure it doesn't... e.g.
have the update.zip you want to use preloaded on the sdcard via pc
or
use a usb with a otg and a version of CWM that can apply update.zip from the USB drive.
Also beware of threads that dont mention what version of the OS they are for. For example its very easy to root your device, but it be on an on 3.x OS and then the OS will update it to 4.04 on the next boot cycle, and wont give you a chance to pick your ROM update. As a result your device is not rooted at this point, and CWM is not installed because you didnt have root in time to move these files:
adb shell mv /system/recovery-from-boot.p.old /system/recovery-from-boot.p
adb shell mv /system/etc/install-recovery.sh.old /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
while in root.
Really sucks.
So in a nutshell those with the latest Xoom tablets that were released, must make sure you find a update.zip that is compatible with ICS 4.04 and then get it to your SDCARD or USB Drive via any method possible - and then flash the right CWM that supports what you want to do, then catch that as it reboots the very first time but pushing the down button and then up button of the volume controls, and then you can install the root (update.zip).... then if all is well you will be able to boot normally, and then go back and get into CWM and install the ROM of your delight.
Experts feel free to chime in so I don't mislead anyone. I wouldn't follow the above advice until an expert puts their AOK on it.

Any Xoom any update BTW I had my mz601( Telstra ) on offical ics rooted by this method.

[Q] Questions: Upgraded my MZ604 UK WiFi Xoom to US 3.1-ICS 4.0.4

I put off the upgrade in the hope the UK stock update would come but eventually changed my mind as all posts seemed to say ICS was alot better.
Have a few things I would like people to comment on.
Used the LAIOT tool which made it relativly straight forward. Few hiccups but got there.
1) Part of the process was to ROOT.
ICS installed Titanium Backup it says its not ROOTED.
2) I'm surprised at how stripped down the US stock ROM is in terms of bloat (which is good).
No stock file manager.
3) I must say I don't see any real benefit on the ICS upgrade and would be happy to be pointed to what they are.
4) Still unable to delete files from memory card.
5) I used Astro to backup my Pre-ICS xoom and hoped to be able to restore APPS but I assume this was just if the upgrade failed and I went back to HONEYCOMB as Astro doesn't see the files.
6) I read that boot-up speed was almost instant, but it seems to be the same albeit with a fancy video splash before screen up.
7) not sure if I need to relock bootloader or if I have already as part of LAIOT process. Too many threads and info.
Hi there. Without doubt. Ics is a lot better.
I am not sure your rooting we t well with custom ics rom. Here is the best rom with procedure for your xoom wifi.

Hi
Sorry don't understand second line of your reply.
That ROM procedure assumes you have knowledge of recovery such as CWM which I don't unless with full instructions.
That thread is way to long to go through but glancing it seems some aspects are still reliant on info that Google hasn't released so the ROMs are incomplete.
My post says that with the stock from I really can't see change from Honey to ICS.
That being said then why would I then go to the TeamEOS ROM, I ask so as to be convinced not to disrespect.

hey
if your looking for a decent ics experience id suggest flashing official cm9 details found here http://goo.gl/UmT44
also check this link http://goo.gl/yveok its a basic introduction on ics features - might help
p.s you dont need to relock the bootloader either - you dont want to go down that road - leave it unlocked for now

[Q] Manually install OTA system only

Before I begin let me say, I am not suggesting anyone try this, I am simply looking for persons with similar experiences.
I recently had my phone become a brick while trying to flash and RUU with S-On. Luckily it was still under warranty and HTC advised me to send it to them, even though I reside in Jamaica, and the phone was bought from AT&T.
Once i got back the phone however I realized everything was upgraded and I was simply happy to have my phone back after about 3 weeks.
Within hours of receiving it I set out to gain root, unlock the bootloader, and get S-Off, so I could restore all the backups I had made. All in all I lost only a few hours of data thanks to my routine.
After installing the latest CM10.1 (built from source) and installing it, I came to realize, I would need to downgrade the touchpanel, which after my previous ordeal, I was (and still am) a bit skeptical about doing.
So I flashed an RUU and went back to AT&T stock.
After playing around with it a bit I was reminded of why I hated the AT&T stock rom. Wifi hot spot doesnt work by default.
So no for the point of all this....
I downloaded the ota from the thread here on XDA and tried to flash it how I would do it with CM.
This thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2119610 to be specific, v3.17.708.5.
As most people would figure, that didnt quite work out.
So I
extracted the contents of the zip file
restructured the folder contents to resemble the a CM update package
extract the boot.img file to the root of the folder
modified the 'update-script' to remove the assertions and flash the boot.img
Signed it with AutoUpdateCreator
This worked fine and now I am able to use the device as freely as I would like.
My data connection (wifi and H+) seem to 'take a short break' now and then, but I also noticed this while using the stock AT&T rom, but this may all just be in my head...lol
My question is, has anyone else tried this and what issues have you encountered?
i just dont understand why youd do this when flashing an ota the traditional way is much faster..

I was hoping to avoid flashing the radio and other partitions.
Figured it would be safest way to change the os itself.
