new to android...... - HTC Sensation

hey guys, im finally moving to android after using wm6.5 for the last 2 years. i hoping you can answer a couple of questions for me.......
my xe is arriving today and im pretty sure i'll be sticking to stock rom as i did on my hd2 but im wondering, how do i go about changing icons to my own designs and can i install user made widgets without having to flash anything. that was the thing i loved about my hd2, i skinned just about the whole phone so im hoping android will be the same.
sorry for the truely newb questions but im totally new to the scene......
thanks for any advice.....

Not sure about widgets, but icons will be easy. There's an app called Desktop Visualizer that lets you do this. You could also run a different launcher that has options for this. Keep in mind your app icons will look the same in your app drawer, though.

Yes you can install any widgets just by putting the APK on your phone and running it.

thanks for the tips guys, im sure i'll soon get the hang of android.....APK sounds like a good start, i'll check it out.....

I tip my hat to you for using wm6.5 for that long sir. Well done.

thank you, i might just do that one day. i'll never get rid of my hd2, best phone i've ever used.......

I've been in the same 6.5.3 boat until very recently.
To be honest, I like my Sensation, but miss some features of my old WM.

The HD2 has the most amazing developer base.
I'd be tweaking all day if I had the choice of 5 OS'es!

The hd2 is prob the best device there is to date lol. That phone is awesome.

Yeah, I kinda wanna get an HD2 just to try out all the different ROMs.

The go launcher ex is pretty cool. I had it for 3 hours but then I got ics. The widgets go launcher provide are pretty awesome though.

[Q] New to rooting; best Gingerbread ROM?

Hi there,
I'm very new to Android and the rooting procedure. Basically, I switched from an iPhone to an HTC Inspire 4G after 4 years.
I'm going to try and root my phone tonight, and also unlock it and put HTC Sense 3.0 on it, but one thing I have been unable to find is a stable ROM for Android 2.3 that is as close to the stock version as possible. It may be right under my nose, but I haven't had any luck. If anyone could provide a download link, or a URL that points to where I could find one, that would be very much appreciated! Thanks!
Best one for HTC sense 3 is CoreDroid. My opinion.

It might be best for you to not jump right into rooting your phone. Spend some time seeing how your phone works out of the box and what you might want to change. During that time spend time on this forum just reading and gathering knowledge. The more you read, the more answers you will already have.
Just my suggestion.

I really like the new sense 3.0 functions that are ported on the coredroid 6.5. P.S. It might be better to root before you get all your apps setup and installed like I did. Then I had no way of backing up since I had no root access and had to setup everything from scratch again.
Thanks for all the help guys.
darkside, I've actually had to phone for about a month now. Funny you mention using it and seeing what I'd want to change, cause one of the first things I did after a week of usage was make a small list of just those things haha.
In addition to unlocking the Inspire, and putting Sense 3.0 and 2.3 on it, the only other thing I really want to do is get all of that annoying AT&T bloatware off. That, and find something that can fix the battery life. I have no idea how to do either, so I think I will take everyone's advice and do some more reading before attempting this.
I'm using MIUI and its doing excellent for me.

Excellent advice.
You really, really, really should have a baseline by which to judge subsequent roms you flash.
Otherwise, you'll never have a full sense of what's working better or worse than something else.

Are you using the MIUI Rom here in the US on AT&T....and do you have any problems with apps in the app market? I want to find a decent GB rom but it seems like most are geared more toward the UK.
For example I'm using ClearDroid, I do a search in the market for the "Xfinity TV" app. It shows right up...I jump on LeeDroids rom, and no "Xfinity TV" app to be found.....And thats with installing Morelocale2 before setting up my google account. Obvioiusly I could care less about the app....it just makes me wonder what other apps are hidden from my view.

i loaded it on my friend's inspire too. its very very clean that's my favorite part, the transitions are cool looking and the lock screen & notification pull down are nice, but after 20 minutes i got really annoyed at the UI. It resembles the iPhone UI a little too much.
I've never actually used an MIUI ROM before, but I have used some of the apps. The camera, music app, and the web browser are awesome... I can't wait for a full working MIUI ROM so I can try it out, however long that might be
transitions are nice @ lippstuh - - i dunno i got annoyed with it as well, but i know if i had it on my phone give me 20-30 minutes and it won't even look the same

In all seriousness about that, I tried merging of Cyanogenmods radio interface layer and i had data for about one minute and then I wasn't able to bring it back. I am not claiming to have a working solution since I am extremely new to developing and was just using newb ingenuity. The only problem that I ran in to AFTER the fact was that my dumb old phone wouldnt go back in to 4g, no matter which rom and radio I used lol! I <3 MIUI

someone tell me what is so special about this looks like all the other roms for gb
CM is basically vanilla Android with feature enhancements and higher amounts of customization throughout the system.
It's not really for people looking for effects and bling like what Sense is. It's more for people that are into getting straight to the point and customizing the phone to their exact needs.
Did he say 'unofficial CM build' at the end, at about 1:55? I thought this was official...?

What would hardware accelerated youtube videos look like?
For me, I find all the Sense widgets to be useless. At first, they are neat. Later, when my phone begins to slow down, I get to asking myself "dual cores, 1.2Ghz and I see lag!?".
Speed comes first, in my book. Then come all the neat features. I have yet to try CM, but I hear so much that I will flash it as my first ROM ever. If I dont like it, I will just stick with stock.

But that's the point of Android. It's barebones, but the user makes it look beautiful. Fast and beautiful. This is why I use Android. I can make it look like iOS *shudder* or webOS, or WP7, or something new and completely different.

Miui vs Sense 3.0/3.5

Go! Personally I am using Miui right now. I started on VU and then gave Miui a try. It feels a but quicker on Miui and their seems to be a lot more customization

Oh boy. I see this going south. I LOVE miui because it has sms popups, themes galore, a nice dialer, and awesome support.
Sense is beautiful, has many variations, the system apps and widgets go on forever, and it really shows off what android is capable of visually. That said, it seems to take a tremendous amount of work by devs to make sense ROMs easy on the ol' battery. That, from my point of view makes them bloated. But, they can be made into fantastic daily drivers as has been shown repeatedly.
Lately I've used MIUI.

You probably think that TJ is being harsh and ruining a fun thing. But you have to take into account that redundant threads like this pollutes the site and when a noob tries to do the right thing and search for a thread he/she needs it'll be harder to find. And all he/she will do is ask the question in a thread that's been answered many times. Thus, it all just creates the circle of problems.
Powered by a G2x
I ran both.
MIUI on Nexus One, which is incapable of properly running even Sense 2.1, having no devs to completely solve everything (trackball wake) and no graphical power to move it smoothly.
Sense 3.0 on MT4G, which is capable of running it fast and smooth.
Personally, I prefer Sense - it is visually and functionally better. While MIUI fixes a lot of things that stock Android did wrong (T9 dialer, notification bar toggles, launcher - in the aspect of adding widgets, smoothness and effects), it still falls short when it comes to Email, text selection (standard Android has selection position bugs and isn't nearly as comfortable as Sense), and just overall visual experience. But MIUI is small and fast, and on older phones it counts - and it supports A LOT of phones that have no better options. So, for me, if the phone can't run Sense or TouchWiz properly - MIUI would be the next best thing to choose.
I go to miui once in a while but find myself coming back to sense 3.0/3.5 only because its just so awesome... Sense is hands down the best thing that happened to android it adds so much to android... Basic stuff like browser ,mail, contacts integration made perfect.... Sense makes android beautiful with brains but miui on the other side is definitely for lower power phones like say moto defy or something like that... Btw love both of them

Good to be back

So, After a 2 year exile from XDA i will soon be gracing my presence again when i collect my HTC One this weekend.
Looking forward to seeing how Android and HTC have improved over the last few years, My last HTC phone was a HTC HD2 with WinMo 6.5 but i did port Android onto it back then. Have had an iPhone for the last 2 years and as much as i love it, i thought it was time for a change.
I spent a lot of time on this forum back then, and im sure i will be popping up here to see whats going on every now and again.
Think my signature could do with updating too
