What is "Wipe" - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

From the Android Dev forum:
"Also note that if you are coming from an earlier G-Apps package you will need to wipe prior to installation of this package in order to avoid FC issues."
What is wipe ? Clear cache ? Clear Dalvik ? Factory reset ?
And what are the consequences of a wipe ?
Thanks !

First off welcome my friend to the crazy world of Android. I would like to suggest you read some stickies and wiki's to get yourself a little more comfortable with Android. I will help you believe me.
Ok wipe is exactly what it sounds like you wipe info or clear out info from certain parts of your OS no different than when you clear history or cache from your pc. Dalvlik is just another area that stores info that we have found needs to be cleared out especially when updating rom and some do it when flashing in general. Factory reset is just that a reset back to factory specs with none of your added apps or info on your tablet

Please bear with me i'm a noob.
I got my G2x with stock rom 2.2 Froyo and then rooted and flashed it without updating it to Gingerbread... I,ve tried CM7, Weapon, and now on Eaglesblood. None of them would let me use voice search without crashing..it will recognize what i say but as soon as i pick a selection from the list it force closes.. and some of the phone settings i try to access will also crash on me.
Is this because i've never updated my phone to GB before root/flash? Was i supposed to? I actually tried updating it with LG updater after root/flash (weapon at the time) and bricked it.. so im not going thru that again.
Thanks in advance!

Well for voice search... Have you tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it?
As for the rest of the phone, maybe a cache and dalvik cache wipe?
I'm not trying to patronize you, but you have stated that you are new to this, so I'm going to ask the following.
Between flashing new ROMs, did you:
Perform factory reset.
Wipe the dalvik cache.
Wipe cache.
Format /system.
This is not something you need to do everytime (Like when upgrading from one version of CM7 to the next), but is recommended (Especially going from the broad range of ROMs you went through).
If you haven't done the following, I recommend doing that first, then coming back should you still need to troubleshoot. MANY issues can be fixed simply by starting with a clean slate.
Yes, i have factory reset, wiped cache n dalvik, and formatted system between flashes. Im going to try reinstalling it now.

Voice search works on my 2.3.4 roms. They are not anything special, but lean, fast and stable.

So... I just tried reinstalling voice search to no avail. I uninstalled it first and then booted into recovery to wipe cache and dalvik. Now, what I noticed was that when I select wipe dalvik cache, it gives error log "E:unknown volum for path [/sd-ext]." but when I press Yes to confirm the wipe, it says "dalvik cache wiped." I'm not sure if it's really wiping dalvik or not... Well, I installed voice search again and it still force closed.

The dalvik cache wipe is working, it will always say that unless you've wiped your SD card with CWM. Since there shouldn't be a need to, it's not a problem and shouldn't be a factor in your situation.

I would like to use it when I'm driving around.. and it's annoying to knowingly keep a feature of phone that won't work

Most likely it's because of something you did incorrectly.
-Are you using stock firmware or custom ROM? which build?
-what kernel did you use ( How did you root your G-Tab)?
-Did you play around with Titanium Backup or Gemini App Manager (Did you
freeze/block/disable autorun/uninstall any app that you thought it's not important)?
-You mention re-install them after crashing. After you re-install them, did the problem stop for those particular apps?
If you mess around with your system apps using some app manager, then you have to figure out what you did to which app (process) to break it - otherwise, YES you need to flash or do a recovery.
If you didn't mess around with your system apps and it's just happened after you root your G-tab, then YES, please do a factory reset wipe on recovery mode and see if it solves the problem, before you consult to the kernel developer. You may have installed an incompatible root script or kernel to your ROM/firmware.
If re-installing the apps solves the problem, then why not re-install them? It probably is the easiest solution.
Wipe:
- Dalvik Cache (app-cache?)
- Cache (app-specific settings?)
- Data/Factory Reset (everything that wasn't on the device to start with)
From Recovery either one at a time, or all of them if you don't mind loosing everything.

Music Apps Crash and Burn

I'm having a little issue. Yesterday I flashed CM10 and had everything set up and all was good. I listened to music without a problem. This morning, on my way to school, I was using poweramp (as I do on a daily basis) to listen to music. After class, i decided to run poweramp and i noted that it would attempt to open but then i would get kicked back to my home screen. So i decided to use Apollo (which im not much of a fan of but I was glad I kept it). I came home and I immediately Got rid of CM10 and went with Stock based ROM. installed everything as usual but I'm still having the same problem. This time, I uninstalled the app (cleared data and cache), rebooted, installed again and the same thing was happening. So i decided to download another popular music app (player pro) and it was doing the same thing. Can I get some tips on what the Issue may be please? I have uploaded images of both of the apps stalling before I was kicked back to my home screen. And I also did a logcat. Any information will be greatly appreciated.
Note: The link is to download the Logcat since its bigger than the XDA limit.

If you did a "dirty" flash when switching your ROM (that is, only wiping cache and Davlik cache) then you might want to try a "clean" flash. There's some disagreement about what a "clean" flash is; but, it at least includes a factory reset/data wipe.
I will do a factory reset/data wipe, and a cache wipe, and a Dalvik wipe when switching ROMs. It doesn't take that long, so why not just do everything.
Of course, make sure you back up everything first -- the factory reset will completely erase all of your apps and settings.

I've done that. I only dirty flash ROM updates. When I go from ROM to ROM, my habbit it wiping data twice, wiping dalvik twice, wiping cache twice and formatting system twice.
I Spent 2 hours getting this ROM set up yesterday and installed all of my mods. Guess I'll have to switch. Thanks for the reply

As with most roms, it's ALWAYS a good idea to do a factory reset & wipe caches before installing. In fact, the dev recommends doing it 3x to ensure proper installation and minimal problems. I always wipe everything before installing a new release, but that's just me. You can use apps like "Titanium Backup" to backup your apps before you wipe if you don't wanna re-download everything. Btw, rls13 is AMAZING!

Dalvik Cache?

Based on my reading... Dalvik cache is like prefetch files on windows... correct?
I was just wondering, if i have been playing around with, but not keeping, quite a few apps, is it a good idea to clear this out? Will it wipe any important data?? Im on 4.0.4, samsung stock but rooted rom (this one : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1994902 pure stock version)
Ive been having issues with apps freezing up my phone that used to have no issue at all, and im just hoping maybe i can help things along.

it's good to wipe it form time to time
don't worry ...if you wiped the cache and dalvick cache nothing will happen and you will not lose any data
