OpenVPN on Nexus S 4G, anyone have it working? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone have a ROM that works with OpenVPN on a Nexus S 4G? I've seen reports on a GSM Nexus but none for the Nexus S. ICS or Gingerbread...I don't care...I just want something that someone has personally used with OpenVPN.
Thank you!!

What is the issue with OpenVPN working? I don't have any experience with OpenVPN, but I've spent a lot of time working with Cisco AnyConnect on them. I believe they both rely on the tun.ko module, is that what you are missing?
If that is the case, I've had some luck with the TUN.ko Installer off the android market. It's hit or miss, but if that's your issue it's worth a shot.

You hit it spot on...i believe my problem is with the tun.ko module. I've tried the android market program to no avail and i've tried downloading it manually, again to no avail. I've downloaded kernels that say they have Tun in them but there is no tun.ko to be found anywhere in those kernels.
I have tried as hard as I can to get it to work but everytime i select my settings in openvpn it just checks the box and unchecks and doesn't connect. When i review my logcat it seems as though it's a tun.ko problem. I've definitely set my settings as correct as i think it is within the openvpn settings, i've put the proper path, proper way to open tun.ko, but still nothing.
Long story short, hoping someone has it working on their NS4G so I could just use their setup because this is starting to become a pain. I've invested like 4 hours into getting it up and running with nothing to show for it lol

Just run it. It is hosted on Google Code.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
thanks alot.
Download the 1.6 .APK since that has been proven to work best with our phones.
that was also my next question because there was like 100 versions on there, once again thanks, i just downloaded the 1.6 version as we speak.
Just be careful when using the Tether. Even though there is a setting to password protect the network, you can't actually get it to work (unless I am doing it wrong) and others can still join. You can manually cut off the connection should someone join the network. A notification will pop-up on the phone telling you if a device has connected to the network.
If you use access control, no one can connect without you enabling the connection.

VPN doesn't work on android - IS THERE A FIX?

I've been trying to get my PPTP VPN to work over verizon 3g for the past few weeks, but it never works. It connects, and the data stops being received after a matter of seconds. It works absolutely fine over wifi, just not over 3g. I thought this was verizon's fault, but then I found a google group where I discovered that ALL Android owners trying to use PPTP over their carrier's mobile network are having the EXACT SAME PROBLEM!!
Is there any easy fix to this? I can't believe Google has let this go on for more than a year since people started complaining about it. This is a major flaw and a dealbreaker for enterprise users.
Any suggestions? See below for string about problem involving ALL ANDROID PHONES:

I'm not sure what pptp is, but I got my corporate email to work through the native email app. The emails are pushed, but I get fc when I try to read any messages. It worked for a few weeks before crapping out one day

never worked for me either, really annoying after coming from iphone where vpn work perfectly.
Installed OpenVPN then which works like a charm so maybe you should try that. You need to be rooted though afaik.

I tried doing OpenVPN, but when I looked up the instructions, they were way beyond my computer programming abilities. Even the person who posted the "simple" instructions in this forum started referring to files I'd never heard of - config files, adb, etc. I REALLY need to get VPN to work on my phone, is there any chance you'd be willing to explain, in layman's terms, how to set it up on Android?
VPN do work on Android...
May be there might be some issues with the configuration, why don't you configure it once again. It will definitely help you out
Well i just have found some useful information for you, first of all that there are number of VPN Providers who are offering Free Android VPN and as well as the query mentioned above that you guys are having problem with your android phone..
so as i suggested above, try to configure again. May be that helps you out...

PPTP is broken and all security-aware enterprises have migrated to more secure solutions ages ago. I don't think it's a priority to get it working, but obviously it should work if it's included by default!

[Q] VPN PPTP doesn't work

Trying to make a VPN connection from my new Droid Charge to a Microsoft server at work. This works fine on my G1 running CM6. I've tried it on Wifi and 3g with no luck. It tells me "Server negotiation failed. Server may disagree with your encryption option." I have encryption turned on just like I do on the G1. Turning it off doesn't work either (because the server requires it and what kind of vpn is it without encryption?).
Anyone have experience with this working or not?
More info:
I'm running ED1, rooted.
Found this in logcat
E/pppd (16706): MPPE required, but kernel has no support.
This lead me to find that other phones have this issue too. So, I guess the question becomes, does anyone know of a fix for this?

Me too. Anybody else? Has there been a resolution for this?
It's a pia to do. I use a company exchange if your trying to do that you have to get with your it department and have them manually set it up. If its not company you will still have to manually set it up. Just google what your trying to set up and there is a how to on almost every type of server. Hope this helps.

I juzt reread your post. Vpn is a company deal. You will have to contact company it guy. You will have to manually put in you server address and a couple of other things.

PPTP Encrypted VPN doesn't work on the Charge, just as it didn't on the Droid X. The issue isn't on any companies IT, it is an issue with the phone. Go to any Verizon store and pick up the Thunderbolt and enter your VPN credentials and it will work. If you do the same on the Charge it will fail.

[MOD][RecoveryZIP] OpenVPN for MCR/PRIME

I have created a recovery zip for personal use which adds openvpn binary and tun.ko (tun.ko optional).
It has been tested on Modaco HR7/HR8, PRIME 1.4/1.5, with both Stock kernel and Clemsyn-Blades OC kernel.
I also found when trying to add openvpn that some of the current ROMs do not create all the busybox symlinks, so I added these as well.
Posting this 'as is', I do not have much available time to support it.
What it does:
copy openvpn binary to /system/xbin
copy tun.ko to /system/lib/modules/tun.ko (optional, if your ROM/kernel already has tun.ko then no need to replace it)
create symlinks
set permissions
How to use:
copy your openvpn configuration files to /sdcard/openvpn
download and install OpenVPN settings for honeycomb (link below, thanks Kevincod)
open OpenVPN settings
menu -> advanced
tick 'Load tun kernel module'
open 'TUN module settings'
Load module using: insmod
Path to tun module: /system/lib/modules/tun.ko
Warning: Make sure you take a nandroid backup first, whilst the tablets it was tested on work perfectly I assume no responsibility if it causes issues on your particular set up. Hence a nandroid backup allows you to roll back easily.

Thanks for this, however after flashing the openvpn+tun zip file on PRIME! v1.5 there is an annoying thing that happens. The tunnel I connect to works fine - I can see the VPN IP address when I go to myiptest.com - but the notification tray keeps popping up with the 'connected' confirmation over and over. It keeps happening until I disconnect the VPN tunnel. Is there anything that can be done about this? Is it a ROM issue or a problem with the openvpn binary file?
From what I have read it is a known issue.

That is a known issue with the OpenVPN Settings application.
It has been reported. http://code.google.com/p/android-openvpn-settings/issues/detail?id=74

Go for it .
There: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15264488#post15264488
That was quick . I'll have to try this out and report back with my findings...
I've now tried this for myself and on the whole it works very well. One thing however is that the notifications tray does still get slightly 'spammed' after connecting to the tunnel, but after a few moments it does settle down and stop as I would expect it to. Good first attempt but still needs a few small tweaks to keep the notifications under control. Keep working on it, it's showing promise .

Yea I just wanted to quick fix the spam after the tunnel was connected, during connection its still buggy, ill fix that when i have more time
It looks as though the connecting messages lag a bit after the tunnel is up. I noticed other notifications lag similarly, as if they get queued up.
For me it seems to last around 10 seconds, very minor. Thank you for making this mod.
Thanks OP. This makes openvpn installation super easy.

[Q] Wireless Tethering Settings

Greetings.
I have searched the forums, and have not found what I was looking for so I am going to ask nicely here.
1. I have just rooted a friends Inspire. Shipped with GB
2. In searching, I can not find any (or minimal) reference to the android wifi tethering app, and I am wondering
A)if anyone uses it, and
B) if so, what settings are used to make it work.
I appreciate your time in reading this post, and thank you in advance for your relevant answers.
thats because the wifi settings will be unique to each person ie channel, encryption, passkey etc.
The tethering needs to be activated and the PC with you want to tether has to be accepted in the cel. The app gives you a password you need to use in the PC...when you try to connect the phone will prompt that device is requering permission to connect. That simple. If you cannot make to work with the hot spot app, you can use Koush's Tether app in the market.
Thanks for the replies,
I was just curious as some devices require tweaking in the settings of google's wifi tether, and didn't know if the inspire worked on the default settings....

I actually had never tethered before yesterday....and it was just for curiosity, but worked great, and didnĀ“t tweaked anything at all. By the way, I am using Coredroid V9.2 that has a default app.
I had to enable "routing fix" in the settings of the google tethering app.
