Consolidated guide to manually upgrade/downgrade ROM plus rooting - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If you have a rooted NS, go to ROM manager; if not, you have to have ABD on your computer (the latest version has adb and fastboot located in \platform-tools folder). http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1396959
1. Download your favorite stock ROM from there: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063664
2. Get "efghi" root.zip http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=821265&d=1324235293
3. (optional) Get your favorite kernel (I use Netarchy because it supports Voodoo)
Here are the procedures:
make sure your phone is fully charged to avoid ANY trouble
put all files into NS root directory and backup EVERYTHING in your internal storage
if your phone is rooted, go ahead to ROM manager and get the latest CWM recovery and install it, then go to recovery; if your phone is NOT rooted, read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1396959
now you're in CWM, MAKE SURE YOU DO NANDROID BACKUP!!! It's better to be safe than sorry
go to Mounts and Storage, format /data, /system, /cache, /boot
go to Install zip from SD card install the following by order: ROM, root.zip, kernel (if any)
run factory reset again
reboot
done and enjoy rooted phone
This is a consolidated install ROM + root guide and all credit goes to whoever provided the files and guides.

Mod, please put it sticky if you think it's useful.

[Q] SNS I9020T Stuck at "google" screen with unlocked padlock symbol

Hi I'm aware that there are similar threads as to this issue but the problem i'm having is my computer being able to detect my usb storage. Since I cannot boot the phone up I can't turn on usb storage. How do I go about flashing the right software since I cannot mount the files to my sdcard through my computer?
As it stands right now:
1. SNS status = unlocked
2. I am able to boot in to clockwork recovery v3.0.2.4
3. I have tried a factory reset/wipe data from recovery
4. I am using windows vista, have downloaded the proper driver (i think)
I followed the nexusshacks guide so far
can anybody help?
Go into clockwork recovery, mounts and storage, mount USB.

Thanks for that! Now I know I can access my sd card. But now I just need help flashing the default software so I can access my sns again! This is my 1st android phone and would really appreciate a straight forward guide as to how to get out of my bad situation and back to a full system recovery. Once again here are my specs:
1. SNS I9020T Running Gingerbread 2.3.4
2. Phone status = unlocked in bootloader mode
3. I have wiped my SD card clean and tried a full factory/data reset through clockwork recovery
4. All I can do it boot to bootloader or boot to cw recovery
5. I need to flash the default software for this phone so I can start a new
Can anyone help me out? would be greatly appreciated
Do you want to reflash the stock ROM or do you want to try a custom ROM? I'd suggest you download a custom ROM, for example Cyanogenmod 7. If you do, it'll also have a compatible kernel and you'll be running your phone again in no time.
Otherwise, search the development section for a stock ROM that suits your phone (http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=883)
Now, I'll assume you download CM7 but the same steps apply to the stock ROM.
1) Download the ROM, it'll be around 86mb in size, a zip file.
2) Copy it to your SDcard using CWM
3) In CWM, go to "install zip from sdcard"
4) "Choose zip from sdcard", obviously, select the ROM.zip file you just downloaded
5) Let it run the installer
6) Reboot
Should work, good luck, let me know if something goes wrong
Greetz
also if you haven't installed the su zip file yet do that. in clockwork recovery mount the usb, copy the su zip file to /sdcard, unmount, and install zip from sdcard.
not sure how you lost the stock 2.3.4 rom, but you can get the GRJ22 rom back onto your ns. read these threads if that's your cup of tea:
- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056062
if you're brave and step over to the dark side of custom roms, i can guarantee you won't turn back. i've tried several, but i usually oscillate back to nscollab. you'll want titanium backup to backup your apps and rom manager to make nandroid backups. also when you flash between different roms make sure you wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache to prevent foreclose issues.
Download one of the stock/ota roms from vulcan's post.
Extract the zip, and put boot.img in the same folder as fastboot.
<fastboot flash boot boot.img>
Reboot.
See if that works.

[Q] Noob Guides

[tl;dr: Need a walkthrough from stock to custom ROM written for dumbasses.]
Is there any way we could get some noob-friendly guides to getting from a stock phone state to a custom ROM? For some of us, this is our first Android phone, and most of you are veterans. I've tried to follow the instructions you've posted, but I just cannot get CWM to flash properly. I've ODIN'd three times now. So would anyone mind writing a guide in a way that, like, your grandma could understand? Maybe then I'd have a shot at a custom ROM.
Kuzar: Try the script I wrote here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15395681&postcount=19
It's fairly simple:
-plug in your phone to your computer via USB
-enable adb debugging in Settings> Applications> Development > Enable USB Debugging (on your phone)
-Double click on the run.bat (from your computer)
I believe this is all you need. This should install clockwork, at which point you can follow instructions in any rom thread to install their rom. let me know if it doesn't work, or if you need any more assistance.
download:
http://www.krylon360.com/file_host/sk4g/recovery.zip (This is the recovery.)
http://www.krylon360.com/file_host/sk4g/update.zip (this is the update)
http://www.4shared.com/get/HpENkmN8/...rer_v2124.html (this is root explorer.)
open the first file on your computer and take out the recovery file inside it and place it on the sd card.
place the second file on the sd card
and install the last file.
now open root explorer scroll down and find sdcard,
now open it and find recovery and long press on it. hit copy. now hit the back button once.
now find system. open it.
find bin. open it.
hit on the top mount r/w
hit paste and overwrite the file.
next, power down the device and instead of powering on regularly, press volume down+ power button you should be in the recovery mode.
if it is blue then hit install packages,
if it is red you should be good to go.
NOW YOU HAVE A CWM
make a back up!
- Wipe Data/Factory Reset
- Wipe Cache Partition
*Now before you Flash, Only if this is your FIRST time Flashing a Custom ROM otherwise ignore the mounts/unmount part*
MAKE SURE YOUR MOUNTS LOOK LIKE THIS: (Go to mounts and storage from CWM recovery)
UNMOUNT CACHE
MOUNT DATA
MOUNT SDCARD
UNMOUNT SYSTEM
- Now its safe to Flash the .zip
after you flash, go back to mounts and storage (before rebooting, AGAIN IGNORE if this isnt your First time) and make sure your mounts look like this:
UNMOUNT CACHE
MOUNT DATA
UNMOUNT SDCARD
UNMOUNT SYSTEM
Reboot *this should take 3-5 minutes*(if it is your first time you should hear a voice talking from the phone dont worry its normal)

[Q] Is there a complete stock AT&T Rom for 2.3.6?

I have looked on the site and cant find a complete stock rom for AT&T? If there is one can someone provide a link.
Thanks,
GJ

So I would just boot into CWM recovery and then install the zip?
1. Nandroid your current setup (so you get back to where you are now)
2. put all the zips you plan to flash on your sdcard
3. reboot to CWM Recovery
4. flash new modem (if you're planning on changing your modem)
5. wipe data / factory reset
6. wipe /cache partition
7. under "Mounts and Storage", Format /system
8. under "Advanced", wipe Dalvic Cache
9. flash rom zip
10. flash kernel zip (if not in rom above)
11. reboot
read through the DEV section under [ROM].. and read the OP (post 1)... each DEV gives recommended steps for flashing zip (CWM) or flashing tars (ODIN). You may also want to use Darkside Superwipe to ensure you clear all previous rom traces prior to flashing new rom.

Quick question about flashing CM9 on Galaxy S plus

Hey guys.
I want to flash the latest CM9 (beta5) on my unmodded factory Galaxy S plus.
This is my plan of attack:
1- Backup Sdcard on PC (pictures, music, videos, etc)
2- Clear Sdcard
3- With Odin, flash FeaModRecovery 1.2
4- Backup everything with CWM on Sdcard then copy backup to PC
5- Format phone and Sdcard (dalvik cache, /system, /data, /cache etc)
6- With Odin, install recovery-clockwork 6.0.1.5
7- Flash CM9 beta5
8- Flash gapps as said here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1825260
9- Reboot phone and voila
I didn't knew anything about flashing my phone up until a couple of hours ago. I've been reading a lot on how it's done and this is what I came up with.
Is this ok??
edit: or do I have to install recovery clockwork 6.0.1.5 first and then start formatting everything?
