[Q] CM9 official alpha builds - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all
Just got my SNS, swapped from a SGS. Just wandering who is responsible for the official CM9 alpha builds (not kangs). For some reason I am struggling to find an official thread that isn't for Kangs.
Apologies if this has been asked a thousnad times.
Thanks
edit: can spomeone confirm if this is the official thread.

Yes it's the official alpha thread, and the dev is kalimochoaz, the OP.

Did Koush pass the baton on to kalimochoaz? I missed how that all progressed.

Yes he did, but I don't know if he abandoned CM9 completely. The only problem is that work seems to be progressing slowly, at least until Alpha20p1. However, it's really smooth for an "alpha" build.

Well, it did crash for me whenever I made prolonged calls and kept rebooting until I installed Glados 2.8. Now everything seems in order... Might want to try that, if you have problems.

[Q] Is it wise to wait for stable cyanogen mod

Hi,
I've searched but I didn't find this.
I've read that some phones never get a full "stable" release of cyanogen. I am currently running masters voodoo rooted rom but I quite fancy CM. Does it look like there will be a stable version, and does anyone have any idea how far in the future that might be.
Or is the current RC solid as a rock right now, or does it have bugs.
Thanks
Nexus S is a CM officially supported phone, it will certainly get CM7 final. I've been running CM7 RC1 since the day after I got my phone a bit more than a week ago, so far it works quite well and stable.

Thanks for your reply. I'll hang on then. I'd prefer to get the stable version. Any idea how long they think it will take. I've been on cm forum googling, but not getting anywhere.

Rule 1 of CM: Don't ask for ETAs.
Build #11 and above of nightlies are based on Android 2.3.3.
#12 probably seems the most stable. I'm using #13 and its fine for me although people have reported problems.
If you want pure stableness, it'd be RC1 but it is on 2.3.2

RC1 is just a nightly that was the line where they thought it was stable enough to promote. I don't think it's any more or less stable than any other nightly.

RC2 coming tonight.
I had a lot of problems with CM7, but I was running Honity, as well. My experience was one of instability. I switched over to Axura and like it a lot.

I tried Axura last night and didn't like it at all. Also tried cm7 nightly 14 and I wasn't keen on it either. So far I haven't seen anything I like better than masters deodexed 2.3.3, so I'm back on that.

Just out of curiousity, what didn't you like about Axura?
On a more related note, as a flashaholic I've flashed every ROM available for the Nexus S and CM7 is the one I use as my Daily Driver. I'm on RC2 and can't remember the last time I had a random reboot. The other ROMs I have NANDroids of to be able to go between are Stock 2.3.3, Axura, and MIUI (I'm waiting for it to become a little more fleshed out before I really give it a go as a daily driver).

I thought Axura was nice and quick. The thing that made me remove it was the font believe it or not. It looks good in the menus but it was bad for reading emails and other small text.

Did you try flashing a different font or using font changer for root on the market? If that was really your only complaint you can very easily change such things.

I didn't know about either of the options you mentioned and I might just try them. I have no idea where you get fonts to flash, or what format they need to be in, and do you flash them the same way you flash everything else??

[Q] Botched Trinity flash

Ok, downloaded Trinity, booted to came wiped cache and dalvik and then flashed Trinity and rebooted. It booted with the Trinity boot animation, went to a black screen (as expected) and stayed there for 30 minutes. I expected that it could take a little time but 30 minutes was a stretch. Battery was at full.charge with USB cable connected.
Anyone have any idea's as to why it didn't work or should I just try it again? I grabbed the overclocked one earlier today and dl'ed it from my phone.

You should listen to what Kwes said... he is right you would have to revert back to about 3ish months ago kernels... new ones will not work with old versions of CM

Exactly. The kernels get updated with the nightlies not the "stable" releases. You could actually probably go back a month or so because that's the last time the kernel changed I think.

I get what you're saying now. I thought you were thinking that I was running CM nightly.
As an update, I tried the earlier version listed on his website and that didn't work either thought I did something interesting.
I decided to just restore the boot from my nandroid (half as an experiment) and that resolved it not booting. Now I looked in the actual zip for the kernel and there are a few files which are system files but the actual kernel I guess doesn't remain since the kernel version is no different.
Another interesting factor is that there is now boot sound, which I saw on another thread being talked about so, if it's a matter of a few files why hasn't someone (outside of CM team) just upped the files with the needed code in them?
So, now back to me getting trinity on this thing, I guess I should just install the latest nightly and see if that works. I'm at work right now so if I have customers I can't be watching my phone.
When I run cm I always use the gigglebread kangs they are always pretty good and very stable.

I'll try that, I assume you mean here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1362451.
I'm also going to wait to grab it, I'm still throttled until tomorrow or hte next day. I still need to call them and ask why I had data on 2g count against my "High-speed" data usage.
Also, I noticed that my wifi tether doesn't work, not a huge deal, just means I need to have some more time on my hands to see what those files do exactly. That or make someone I know do it for me....
No that's not it I sent you a pm.

Trinity kernel is not compatible with that release. There's no reason to run that release anyways, go get baldwinguys CM7 kang, which isn't really a kang and is just adding the nightly features because cyanogens bot is down.

Funny, when a friend of mine mentioned he was running a nightly my replay was something to the effect of: I don't mind having my web browser be a nightly release but I'm not too sure I want to have something potentially unstable that barely works on my phone. I also feel like I'm missing something on these nightlies, afaik, you have to completely wipe your system and flash it then reinstall all your apps, reconfigure them, and reconfigure your system settings. That's just too much work, I don't have the time to do that even weekly.

Nah nightlies are as stable or more stable then rc builds on cm7. No need with all that wiping really. Unless you are going to something other then cm7 or you change your file formats.
Gigglebread is just what euroskank calls their cm7 cherry pick kangs.

Choppy CM10 a2 kernel

Can't post this in the development section as a response so I will post it here. Does the new InstigatorX 6.1 kernel work on TeamChopsticks CM10 8/12 a2 ROM? YES!!! Everything works great. Camera, video and landscape work also. Only issue is I get FC's using Facebook sometimes but that is minor for me. Used CWM 6xx to flash. Flashed rom, gapps 7/29 and kernel flawlessly. As always, thanks to everyone involved for making our phones much more enjoyable! Enjoy!

Calling and texting also work good. No issues yet. Still an alpha so you may have issues with other programs. Chances are that we don't have the same stuff. Only thing is overall phone volume has been low since I first flashed CM9 two months ago. Easy fix was downloading a volume boost app.

r4ins is going to keep up with the AOKP Jellybean project since armyvet is not, and gmillz will also probably keep building on their ROM. I'm on the 8/5 with the 1a chopsticks base and InstigatorX 6.2 kernel. If you're experiencing a "choppy" feel, check out either the Darkside or InstigatorX kernel and pick a good frequency governor. That can help a lot. On any of these early ROM's you're going to still get FC's and reboots.. they're Alpha's. If avoiding that is the most important thing to you, I would stick to CM9, Chimera, SkyICS, or a similar ICS ROM.

No good for day to day operations? I haven't tried out the nightlies, but I tried out the RC2 released about a month ago and haven't had any problems. Not sure what kind of bugs you are talking about.

Really? Maybe it was just me. I tried it for a while and went through a few nightlies, and there was just to many problems. One of the big issues I had was the device not rebooting. Yes I know how to get it to boot up, but it's a total pain. Had another big issue with the gapps package with some of the apps putting a huge drain on the battery. I absolutely love CM. I wish there was a total stable version (which now I guess there is). But for me to use it everyday, especially for work as well, I just can't justify having it with all the issues I had. I also had some issues with reception on the phone.
There is no such thing as a Bug-less CM release, 'Stable' maybe for some people. Will everything work as it should for everybody? not the case.

the RC's are actually more stable for "most", but can still have issues for some.
on Nightlies you can have something working one night and it is changed and not working the next.
they are a WIP
the gapps flashing goes way back to an agreement btwn Cyanogen and Google. Forget details
I guess i do not know how to use tapatalk, did not mean to thank you especially 4 times. Anyways nightlies are not going to be stable.

Test/Feedback Req: AOKP Unified Test & Pre-nightly test build

Hi everyone! BMc08GT (Brandon) has been busy so I'm trying to help out.

One will be fired off on a nightly soon, the other is for an upcoming change.

Please feel free to reply with feedback here, hangouts, PM, Twitter, or any other way to get it to us.
Thanks in advance!
Great to see an AOKP thread starting! I dumped CM after they started their unified build and been running bmc08gt builds since. I don't understand why people are consistently using CM with the big issues it's gone through lately when AOKP works great. I just hope AOKP doesn't go down the same road with it's unified. I am going to try the unified build and see how it goes.

Thanks for the great replies.
Since you've been using this for a while I'm hoping you can note any differences in:
1) What you've been using
vs
2) Tonight's "pre-nightly" test build (in case we need to address something before it fires off)
vs
3) Test unified build. (Brandon's been working on a test unifying on what's already in AOKP - but this is a test based off CM device trees)
There's a desire to go unified but not at the risk of breaking what's already there.
So we'll be doing what we can to test this before making the jump.
Look forward to the results!
So I briefly tested the unified build.
WORKING....
-sms and mms
-data
-phone calls with a Bluetooth headset.
NOT WORKING...
-Google search force closes especially while using the Google launcher.
In general things are looking great for a unified build. Again, I didn't test everything but so far the important necessities are working.
Great work guys!!

The new unofficial nightly switched to ART but had consistent force closes just like the unified build.
I tried the nightly that you have linked in the OP and data did not work.

We made several changes to device repos that very likely broke the pre-nightly. That's why we needed it tested.
But the unified is getting rave reviews from everyone I have asked. Just waiting on a gsm user to respond to see if we put it in.
Thanks again for all of your help!
Just so everyone knows, the S3 line was unified and took effect with tonight's nightly.
On behalf of Team Kang our thanks to testers for helping ensure a smooth transition.
