Facebook button remapping for unrooted(!) HTC ChaCha - HTC ChaCha

As probably many of us here, I've bought HTC ChaCha not for the Facebook key, but rather for the other 42. However, not being able to reassign that FB button to something more relevant was rather annoying - and looked like an interesting way to spend the weekend.
So, a weekend of reading though the phone's log and trying different approaches resulted in a simple application for reassigning the Facebook button to custom actions. I've published it on Android market: F-button Lite for HTC ChaCha (free and without ads). The app does not rely on any hacks or non-standard tricks, and therefore works even on unrooted HTC ChaCha (and maybe on HTC Salsa).
Please let me know if the application works on your HTC ChaCha/Status/Salsa, and feel free to share any ideas for improving the app.
UPD: Requires firmware version 1.23 or higher (see Settings - About phone - Software information - Software number, and, if necessary, get an update via Settings - About phone - Software updates - Check now).
UPD2: Reportedly does not work with AT&T Status. Please try the Lite version before paying for the full one. If you have already bought the full version and it does not work on your phone, please email me the order number to get a refund.

Congratulations for the work you've put in!
I have also bought the phone for the keyboard (as I dislike FB and don't use it) but unfortunately I have rooted my phone and removed everything FB related.

just tried the lite version, its buggy, if you once set for default it won't change the action, even if u clear in the default settings and cache/data. tried uninstalling, reinstalling and restarting phone but same default action, can't change.

I'm not sure if I understood the problem...
Do you mean that pressing the FB button still opens Facebook even if you set "FButton Lite" as the default handler (as per the screenshot)?
Or that the dialog "Complete action using" always lists "Custom F-Button action" and not the specific action you've selected?
Or that F-Button always performs the same action (which one exactly?) ignoring the actions that you selected?

I'l tell what happened, i installed the app / pressed the f key / it asked for two options / i pressed htc facebook / and checked the set default action / then i pressed f key it opened facebook post page / then i decided to try other device control options / i changed it by going in the f-button app / but when i pressed f key it still opened htc facebook / i went in phone settings and cleared app data and cache still no change i reinstalled still it opens to htc status post page / no popup to configure. Now what to do ?

When you set an application as the default one for some action, this setting is stored in the properties of that application (Facebook for HTC Sense, in this case).
Try clearing the defaults for "Facebook for HTC Sense" rather than for F-Button. (Settings - Applications - Manage Applications - All - Facebook for HTC Sense - Clear defaults.)
Please let me know whether this worked for you.

I would like to utilize that button as a power button , is it possible ?

The app doesn't work for me. =/
On 1.18.401.1 HTC ChaCha.
(And the "Clear defaults" button for Facebook for HTC Sense is nonactive.)

Unfortunately, no.
On unrooted phones, this is forbidden for non-system applications.
On rooted phones, this button can be remapped to turn off the phone, but turning on is unreliable.

Does this mean that when you install the app and click the FB button:
1) the phone opens Facebook as usual, or
2) nothing happens at all, or
3) something else?
Has the "Complete action using" dialog ever been displayed?

No dialog displayed after installing and the F button opens Facebook as usual, yes.
Maybe it's the 1.18 version, did you test on it ?

Yes, it might be the 1.18... My test device has 1.57.
Would you mind to record a part of your system log, so that I could analyze the issue in detail?
Here is the procedure:
(re)install the mapping application
install aLogcat and open it
in aLogcat, press Menu - Clear
press the Facebook button
when the Facebook app opens, hit Back to return to aLogcat
press Menu - Share (or Save) and email the log to me (my nickname @gmail.com)
Thanks in advance!

How to get to "Complete Action Using" screen
Hello,
Please bear with me as I just bought my first Android phone.
I downloaded F-Button Lite for HTC Cha Cha from the Android market. Basically I want the F button to toggle the flashlight (aka camera flash) on and off.
I was able to get to the screen to set the desired functions for short press and long press. However, how do you get to the screen (shown on the thumbnail in the first post) that says "Complete Action Using"?
So far all the F-button does is bring up the Facebook app as normal. Would appreciate if some more detailed installation instructions had been provided with the F-Button Lite app.
However I really hope I can get this thing working as a flashlight function would be very useful.
Thank you,
I.G. Clapp

I've checked the ROMs available here in the forum, and found that the events that the remapping application relies upon, were added only in firmware version 1.23.
A quick solution for the owners of 1.13 or 1.18 would be, well, to update. However, I realize that some operators take their time publishing the updates, so I'll check if it is possible to make the app compatible also with the old versions.
igclapp, can you please post your firmware version number? It can be seen in Settings - About phone - Software information - Software number.

Hi Anmipo,
It was 1.22.415.2. So I figured I needed to upgrade to at least 1.23. I went to "About phone"/"Software Updates" and downloaded the update. Now the phone software shows version 1.57.415.3.
I tried F-Button Lite again and the "Complete action using" screen came up and I was able to set it up so the F button now turns on the flashlight! However, it says you have to use the "back" button to switch off the flashlight. Not a big deal, just thought toggling the F-button again would turn off the flashlight.
Only issue now is that it seems the flashlight won't run in the background if you want to use another app. If you press the home button, the flashlight turns off.
Still, pretty handy. Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion, please check the updated version.
Having the flashlight in background is not possible at the moment, unfortunately...

I have bought HTC ChaCha yesterday. This is my first android set. Before that I was using Nokia Symbian phones.
After buying HTC ChaCha, the first thing which I wanted to do was to assign that "f" button to some other application because I don't use facebook much. I searched google and this page was opened. Hence I installed that application "F-button lite" from android market. When I pressed the f button, a window opened and I selected F-Button lite but I am not able to click on "Device Control". It is not highlighted.
The software which I am using is 1.54.401.2

You need first to press "Action on click" and choose "Device control", then the corresponding option will be enabled.

That was helpful. Its working now. I am using that "f" button for flashlight. It makes sense because flashlight also starts with "f" . Thanks a lot.

Very lame, I can't seem to find how change the 'standard' navigation back to google maps navigation.
I think this behavoir is very very lame, you can't uninstall the application, so HTC forces you to buy this 3rd party navigation software, wich in my opinion sucks compared to Google Maps Navigation!
Same goes for the Amazone MP3 application which you can't deinstall. Very very lame, it seems I have spend 500 euro on a high-tec a billboard!

Saterday I called again, but the person from the HTC helpdesk didnt even knew the difference between Google Maps Navigation and HTC premium navigation. I've tried to make it all clear using screen shots, but then there was this problem getting two url's with the pictures of both nav systems to the person. Apperently the guy has trouble unraveling the misteries of email

This is the 3rd time they promised to call me back, and didn't, I was fed up with HTC, I've returned my phone, I'm going for the Samsung Nexus S.
I'm tired of spending 500 euro on a billboard. If I want a phone were the hardware manufactuer desides what software I must run, I'll buy Apple.
Really annoying to have the Amazon MP3 icon in you're menu. Really sucks that you can't deinstall it.What the F are they thinking?, people who buy android don't need a mp3 store, they are smart enough to click on a torrent link or use usenet.
It's been a long ride from Qtek 8010 till the HTC legend, and various steps in between, but no more HTC for me. But not being able to choose what Navigation software you run, thus forcing you to use the paid version is unacceptable for me.

Q. How do I use turn by turn navigation on the phone?
The phone does support turn by turn navigation. First you must download a premium map. From the home screen press on All apps > Locations > Menu > Upgrade > Purchase Navigation and choose the map for the country you are in.
To use turn by turn navigation, please press on Menu from the home screen > All Apps > Car Panel > Navigation.
NOTE 1: Purchase Navigation is the 2nd icon located on the lower left side of the screen, it is the map with the arrow icon pointing upwards.
NOTE 2: An internet connection (Wi-Fi, GPRS/3G, etc.) is required to access this service. Your operator may charge for using GPRS/3G. Paid applications are available in specified territories only.
NOTE 3: This function requires Wi-Fi or GPRS/3G in order to work properly, and usage may shorten the handset's battery life. Please refer to "How can I prolong my handset's battery life?" FAQ.
Ergo, the only way to use turn by turn navigation on your Desire S, it to buy it from HTC.

Forced use of HTC Location - a summary
Since I've been pulling out my hair over this issue all of yesterday evening I thought I'd summarize the problem for those who don't have the phone (yet):
You can launch Google Maps, Google Navigation and HTC Locations manually and either will work.
When you tap an address in a contact's details this will launch HTC Locations and you cannot change this default. However, long-pressing the contact's picture and selecting the map icon from the pop-up menu will launch Google Maps. I've no idea what it does when you have multiple addresses per contact, though.
When you tap the location associated with an appointment, either in Calendar itself or in an event reminder this will launch HTC Locations, you cannot change this default and there's no known workaround.
Clicking a Maps link in Browser will present the usual choice that can/i] be changed afterwards via the usual "open with ... by default" mechanism.
So basically it looks like only HTC apps are affected at present but the Calendar issue is a deal breaker for me.
HTC have really gotten too bold and in-your-face with Sense, which is a shame really.
Using an alternative launcher also doesn't help with this, I'm using ADW.Launcher and when I check a contact's address, HTC Location pops up instead of Google Maps .
Right now my HTC Desire S has CoPilot Live, that I purchased on 2009, there's also Navigon, that I purchased a few months ago tired of not having newer maps for CoPilot. And now I have this HTC Location, besides Google Navigation, of course. How many GPS navigation programs could one possibly need?
BTW, Navigon lacks many features, that's why I decided to reinstall CoPilot. I'm hoping Navigon will catch up other platforms, feature wise; that or CoPilot will finally offer updated maps on a regular basis, so I can just leave one program.

After that u have the choice (google maps - or your favorite navi installed)
but, yes it's *censored* behavior from htc
Also the amazonmp3 is bull**** - just deinstall the apk - than also in music.app the ad is gone

2 questions - multitasking issues and native gchat

i installed mango RTM over the weekend and its been great. as i've been playing with it i've noticed 2 things
1. if you're texting with someone and you place the messaging app into "standby" (press windows button) and you get a text msg notification toast, if you click the toast it opens up a new copy of the messaging app. you can verify this by going into the multitasking switcher, you'll see 2 panels of "messaging". is this a bug or is this how its supposed to be?
2. i'm not really a big user of facebook chat but i am on gmail all the time so i was wondering if there's any way we can hack gchat on? gchat and fb chat both use the jabber protocol and since fb chat is enabled natively, we know there's a possibility of it being supported. any ideas?
thanks!
1: The "Multitasking" fast App switcher isn't showing instances of open apps. It's just showing recently use apps. Every app is in stand by mode if you don't "Back" out of them with the Back Button. The Task Switcher also has a 5 page limit. Apps outside that limit are still open/standby, just not in the list. At least this is how I believe it works. No way to tell till we have enough resume enabled apps that are Mango compatible to test this more. It's not the greatest implementation of Multitasking IMO. My 2 complains is this multiple pages of the same app issue that you mentioned & the 5 page limitation. When I'm really active on my phone, I can see this being an issue. Not a deal breaker, more of an annoyance.
1. The task switcher just show what you've done last. Also, native apps are always running and are not confine to the same restrictions as 3rd party apps.
2. Now that Microsoft open up Marketplace for Mango apps submissions, it won't be long before unofficial Google Talk apps show up.
Something that I noticed with wonder reader. Dont know if it's how the app is made, but..
When you open it, you hit windows (home) button, and hit back, it just come back instantly. But if you open it using the tile, it dont resume. It re-open it and it's not instantly.
Anyone else noticed?

Microsoft made a conscious design decision that apps started from the tile (on the Start screen or app list) are started as a new instance. The only way to fast app switch is by going through the backstack (either navigating sequentially via the back key or directly via the app switcher). I believe "a consistent user experience" was cited as the reason for this behavior.
This is quite different than in iOS, where the app switcher AND the home screen icon will fast resume an app (if still in memory). And that is why iOS has a way to delete apps from the app switcher, because that's the only way to start a new instance (it's also why Windows Phone doesn't need a way to clear apps from the app switcher). I happen to think Apple's design is better because more often than not, a user is looking to resume an experience, no matter how they end up starting app; therefore it should be the default behavior.
With Windows Phone deep linking, clicking on a secondary tile, toast notification, or a search extension can launch directly into a "page" inside the app, but it still takes time to fire up new instances of the app and the page.
You might also be interested to know that an app can only appear in the backstack once. So if you open an app using the main tile, then to go to the Start screen and start it again with a secondary tile, it'll knock the first instance off the backstack.
Anyway, probably more than you ever wanted to know but hope this clears it up.

Browser issues and questions, any fixes available?

im on android revolution 2.3.0
1. The URL bar does not work for searching, even if I press the search button on the right first. After I press enter nothing happens. For example I press the search button and type "xda transformer" and press enter. Nothing happens. I am forced to go to google.com and search on the site itself
2. Occasionally the browser closes with no force close message and all my tabs are gone.
3. Is there a way to increase the maximum number of tabs allowed?
4. Not just but any android device I have used and any browser I have used (like dolphin) is an issue where if I click a link that first goes to an advertising site and then redirects to the main link, it says page cannot be displayed on the ad site. For example I get emails from 1saleaday.com which when you click the link goes to an ad site that then is supposed to redirect, but I get page cannot be displayed. This happens on any browser I use and also on my thunderbolt.
Well I fixed the search problem by turning off instant results in the options. No one has any idea on the other three?
Another problem with both dolphin and stock browser is many times you have to press the back button multiple times in order to go back one page.
2. It's a fault of your rom. Revolver has better memory limits. Install auto memory killer from the market and set to optimal.
3. No idea. What is the maximum?
4. Your rom has set ad booking too aggressive. Install adaway from the market and only enable the bottom of the 3 sources.
Revolver rom would solve most of your problems too.

[Q] Making the switch (from Android G2.3.4), have some questions

Hi all,
Thanks in advance for answering some questions I have.
I've watched a ton of vids, done a pretty good amount of research so far, but still have a few unanswered questions about WP7.5. I will be looking at getting a Lumia 800 as that's what my carrier is offering in Canada. I'm sick of Android being flaky due to the fragmented ecosystem and am looking forward to the 'closed' nature of WP7.5 - I just want it to work. Period.
So, on to the Qs:
Can you enable a number row over the QWERTY keys on the keyboard? Alternatively, can you long-press those keys to pop up the numbers, even if they don't show?
Can you go into the settings to force the phone app to start with the dialpad as opposed to the call log/history?
Like in Smart Keyboard on android, does the first suggested word in the suggestions when typing get auto-selected when you hit the spacebar?
Are there alternative apps for StumbleUpon or Feedly available? (I couldn't find them, but I use these 2 apps reasonably often) Suggestions for similar, if no?
Functionality of the phone in Canada vs US? (ie which functions don't work: Local Scout, Bing Vision, Music search, etc etc)
Is there any quick way to change settings without having to pin them all to your home screen?
Can you make the calendar app start with Agenda view?
Thanks, I'll add more if I think of them.
O
>> Can you enable a number row over the QWERTY keys on the keyboard? Alternatively, can you long-press those keys to pop up the numbers, even if they don't show?
There is a Key which shows up all the numbers and other characters but its not like a popup and no long press.
>>Can you go into the settings to force the phone app to start with the dialpad as opposed to the call log/history?
Nope but there are apps which are purely number pads you can use.
>>Like in Smart Keyboard on android, does the first suggested word in the suggestions when typing get auto-selected when you hit the spacebar?
No, You need to tap and select the word.

Thats not true, it does auto select and use it.
Been using WP from sometime but not sure how this works if at all possible.
Like when I type HAV it shows me Have but when I hit spacebar, it does not auto complete but adds a space.

There are some words that it will auto fill in but they have to be the only possible thing you would be typing in context with the sentence. Most words have to be chosen from bar right above the text. (i like it this way)
No problem on the agenda view. Mine is always in that view so that's what i always see
1: To add to what others have said, you can tap-and-slide to add just a single number or punctuation in one motion. From the standard keyboard, put your finger down on the number/punctuation mode key, slide it to the number or punctuation you want (the keyboard will temporarily switch modes when you touch the key initially), and release. The key your finger was on (in the alternate mode) will be typed, but the keyboard will be in the original mode. Very handy.
Alternatively, you can add some registry values that will create press-and-hold options for the top keys to have numbers. I added a press-and-hold list to my comma key; sometimes it's a lot nicer than switching modes even briefly! (I use a lot of semicolons.)
3: For some reason, nobody has mentioned this yet. If the phone will auto-correct (including auto-complete), then the suggested word/completion will be bold. Pressing the Spacebar when there's a bolded suggestion will use that suggestion automatically.
If none of the suggestions are bold (because what you typed is already a valid word, or because it isn't sure what you meant to type), then you can tap on a suggestion to use it. The phone does have a setting to automatically add a space after you do this.
4: There's an app that comes up when you search for StumbleUpon, based on keyword match (it's not actually a stumbleupon app, but it targets the same kind of user). I haven't tried it (but then, I don't use SU either).
5: Vision and Music Search should both work just fine (they're not locale based at all, so far as I know). Scout... I think it works in Canada? I've never tried (I live close to the border, but not *that* close, and international data costs money so I always have it disabled). I assume Zune Pass and Directions both work as well, and those are the other two locale-sensitive features I can think of that might care.
6: Not really, but how often do you need to mess with settings? There are some apps that let you quickly reach the ones you use most often, or let you quickly reach ones that are normally a few levels deep, but no one-tap toggles yet that I'm aware of.
However, I really don't find it required to enter settings much at all. See a new WiFi network? The phone will prompt you. You'll only save a very small amount of power by leaving WiFi off when not in use; the phone is very good at putting it in a power-saving mode. I almost never need to touch any of the other settings.
Didn't notice the bold... good post ... i'm always learning something new in Windows phone

bing search button changeable?

Does anyone have any idea of how to set the Bing button to refer to google search? I feel the Bing search engine is not that so efficiency =P
I don't think its possible although the default search engine in IE can be changed.
Well, a custom ROM could change it, certainly. I'm not sure about a stock ROM. It requires either changing the search program itself (which is baked into ROM) or changing the command that the OS runs when you hit the button (which *might* not be hard-coded and therefore could possibly be changed with a registry tweak, for example).
You need bing to access bing vision and local scout.
If you want google, go to m.google.com and it will ask you if you want a tile on your start screen. Put it where you'll always see it and then you have a button.
I used to love google but nowadays i find it's stupid ranked advertisement coming up as part of my search and throwing me to the wrong places annoying. That and bing seems to be more accurate. Back a few years i would have felt the opposite.

thanks for your comment, I think the 'key word' match searching system is different depend on regions & languages. and for now, i haven't suffered a lot from ads viewing google mobile.
I may prefer to use bing some time after. as said, every dog has its day.

AFAIR it was a registry hack
If your ROM comes pre-configured for something other than Bing for searching in IE, there's now an official setting to change it. If it comes pre-configured for Bing, that setting is hidden. In either case, it's just a registry change. See the registry tweak thread.

Microsoft stated that changing the default IE search engine was a feature in Mango.

Well, I'm "pretty sure" you can do this: but legitimately speaking - you could probably write an app that would start a background task that would catch every button press for the search button and then open up IE to google.com. Loading Google.com would of course, not be as fast as the preloaded bing screen, but the search results might be more effective. But theortetically, I'm fairly certain that you can do this. Efficiently speaking, this is probably not a very viable option. For starters, you'd have to set a LONG hold time for that background task. Another problem would be that the background task might shut down randomly so you'd probably have to frequently check if it was on/turn it on.
But point being, in theory - yes, you can.
Hello! When i use the Search Button on my HTC Trophy, it open "Call History". But i need the Bing Search. Can i chance it to Bing?
My Phone is Full Unlocked with Version 7.10.8773.98.
It's a "feature" of the ROM. Sometimes it can be changed without flashing a new ROM, sometimes it can't. You really need to read the descriptions of ROMs closely before flashing them; full-unlock is far from the only change that people make.
do you know PWPD Tweaks? With that app you can change it maybe. You can find that app on Bazaar
hi you can use the SearchKey.xap... with this app you can change your search button to a searchpage that you like...
Hello! I found this:
"This is a tip on how to change searchkey
With registry editor navigate to key
[HKLM\Software\OEM\WebSearchOverride]
and change the value of
"ActionType"=3
to 6
This will set searchkey to Bing (default action)"
In my Registry it was 3 and i chance in 6. Restart my Phone and Bing works now.
