I'm try to set up a simple guide for anyone who is attempting to flash a ROM.
It is not meant to be comprehensive. Just a helpful guide. And before anyone points out that the info is redundant, I know that it is.
But this may help the noob's and avoid new pointless threads. You can always refer beginners back here.
Feel free to suggest and I will add to it when possible.
I have only worked with Windows 7 and Windows XP, I can't comment on other systems.
Disclaimer: Rom flashing involves the risk of bricking your phone. A small explosion is also possible but has not been reported in the Infuse threads.
If you need to root it: use Superoneclick - but only for FROYO (2.2.1) or earlier Gingerbread up to UCKJ4. On Later GB builds, SOC does not work.
(Some methods of flashing requires root, others may not need root)
This works better with Stock FROYO.
http://shortfuse.org/
Here's a youtube video on how to root your phone using SOC on FROYO. (there are many others, google happens to pick this one on the top list)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4wMWtyPl_E
There is also another thread in the Q/A on rooting.
HOW to UNLOCK YOUR PHONE THE FAST WAY:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1093476&page=12
Before flashing, it may be helpful but not necessary to:
1. Charge your battery to 100%.
2. Backing up your contacts to google.
3. You may want to back up your apps with Titanium Backup or equivalent.
4. You should have Root Explorer and SGS Kernel Flasher.
5. You should have copied the ROMs and kernels you want on your PC and on your phone. (Make a folder on your phone. Call it "ROMs" or whatever)
6. Your phone should be on debugging mode: Settings/Application/Development/USB debug.
7. You may also want to have the samsung drivers installed and communication with your phone as well. The drivers are on your phone..and you can get it from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Infuse_4G_SGH-i997
8. Situations to consider when you are getting bad flash or interruptions: Change USB data cable; Change USB port; Change computer; Change Windows 7, XP etc.
9. Whatever ROM you want, go to that ROM in the dev section and read the Original Post (OP). It will tell you the ROM's feature, what is working and the known bugs.
Most people tend to get annoyed when you ask questions that are already covered in the OP.
Flashing:
Since the official release if AT&T's 2.3.6 UCLB3 Gingerbread, the firmware comes with gingerbread bootloaders. When you try to flash a firmware like CM9 or CM10, you may get a distorted rainbow cwm recovery.
I think the most updated method of flashing will require you to know how to put your phone into download mode. See reference section. You will need to learn how to use Odin or Heimdall.
To use Heimdall: I have included 2 links. Read the OP carefully. You will need to flash the firmware twice. After the first successful flash, the boot loader box will light up and become available for you to check the box. Put the phone back into download mode and flash it again.
If it fails, you had a bad connection. Change the usb port or the usb cord.
It doesn't matter what link you use.
1. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1331381
2. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1524081
To use Odin: I have also included 2 links. Read the OPs carefully.

2. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1613523
Either with Heimdall or Odin, these methods have the cwm recovery that will give you the ability to flash custom firmware.
Are you having trouble with your computer recognizing your device in USB port?
Try a different PC.

HERE IS ANDROS11 ON HOW TO FLASH A JB ROM:

Or if rooted, you can use SGS kernel flasher and the same kernel in this post:

One of the ways that I use regularly is with the heimdall one click created by Adam Outler.
I think it's pretty simple to use, but that is my opinion. Here is my Gingerbread UCLB3 created using Heimdall One-Click:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1524081
Read up on it a bit.
Put your phone in download mode. (power off, pull bat, hold both volume, insert battery, plug in usb)
Flash it after you get the drivers working.
Flash it the second time with boot loaders checked
Reboot. This will give you a UCLB3 stock - Gingerbread.
Go in DL mode again.
Flash Entropy's DD kernel to give you cwm red.
After flashing Entropy's DD kernel, it will boot into the ROM. You can power off and use the three fingers technique and boot into red recovery.
Flash the ROM you want.
Factory reset in cwm and the usual wipes.
Here is an example:
I wanted to flash Zeus (or Numas, Caty or Bionix -all Infused ROM based on GB leaks)
I would download the said ROM.
I have the heimdall one click package downloaded.
Update Java. Put the phone in DL mode. (Doesn't matter if the phone was borked or not. Doesn't matter if I'm on FROYO stock or rooted.
I'm looking for a clean flash.)
Run the one click. It should help you set up the drivers to one USB port on your PC. Driver installer is call Zadig - under options/utility.
Flash it once. When it is done, it would restart. If it did not boot up, you need to put the phone back in DL mode and flash it again with the bootloader box checked.
If it booted up on a stock AT&T UCLB3, you can proceed to let it finish. Turn it off, put it back in DL mode and use the one click Entropy's DD kernel flash. After this, you should be able
get into CWM red recovery.
Even though, it's stock, just being paranoid, I would sometimes perform a factory reset before I proceed with flashing Zeus or whatever ROM.
This method has not failed me..but as I mentioned, once you try a few, you get to use what you are comfortable with.
Some finer points in flashing:
After flashing a ROM, if you are having issues (Market not working right, wifi not connecting, mms not going through, FC's on apps, sounds going in and out, touch screen not responsive, lags, etc) that other users are not experiencing, please don't blame the DEVs for USER error. This is what I would refer to as left over from previous ROMs or not a clean flash.
If you knew how to trouble shoot specific problems with a file editor (deleting left over things with root explorer) or clean out cache or uninstall and re-install with titanium backup, then fine.
If not, try:
1. Go into ClockWorkMod (cwm): Wipe cache. Then go to Advance: Wipe dalvik cache. Then fix permission. And go back to the main menu and reboot.
You can also try going to mount. Then format cache and format data. And then Reboot. (if you are changing ROM, format the system also)
2. Go to cwm and perform factory reset. And just to be redundant, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, fix permission. And then return to the main menu, choose install from SD, then reflash the ROM
3. To flash one of pretzket's Samsung Leak:
Download the leak.
Open it with 7zip or WinRar or equivalent.
Have your phone drivers set up.
Run Odin.
Put your phone in DOWNLOAD MODE:
Put the file in the PDA.
While flashing this, make sure the phone is on a stable surface. Don't Touch it. Make sure there is no tension on the Data cord.
I'm superstitious, but make sure all other programs are not running..stupid things like burning a DVD etc.
Make sure your antivirus is turned off.
Section A:
IF you have SOFT BRICKED, Samsung BOOT LOOPED, BLUE 3e RECOVERY, Signature Verification Failure, Recovery Boot Loop, you may need to restore your phone.

Here is my Heimdall One Click Return to Stock UCLB3 with recovery method:

Section B:
DOWNLOAD mode: Power off. Open back cover. Remove battery. Press and hold both volume buttons - (do not hold power button) Insert battery while holding vol buttons. Plug in USB cable.
It can also be achieved by open back cover, Remove battery. Press and hold both volume buttons. Plug in USB cable and then insert battery.
Recovery: Tricky for me but with power off, hold both volume buttons and the power button at the same time. Samsung logo should come on. Let go only the power button, Keep holding the volumes buttons. And let go when you boot into recovery.
If you had a ROM running, you can also download Quickboot from Market. Running this app will give you options to go into recovery or DL mode, provided that you are rooted. Redundant, but if you are running a ROM with extended power menu, just press the power button and select the mode you want.

Section D: Hard and Soft reset.
http://buntygsm.blogspot.com/2011/05/samsung-i997-infuse-4g-hard-reset.html
1. Shut the POWER OFF., take the BATTERY OUT and reinsert it back again after a few seconds.
2. Hold the VOLUME DOWN BUTTON
3. Press and hold the POWER BUTTON until the device turns on
4. A menu will show that let you choose for Fastbook, Recovery, Clear Storage, and Simlock
5. Just Select CLEAR STORAGE by pressing the VOLUME DOWN button
6. Then briefly press and release the POWER BUTTON
7. Then select to confirm: Volume Up for YES and Volume Down for NO
Then wait until the device finished restoring, it will then reboot. Once its completed, all data you previously installed on Samsung i997 Infuse 4G has been already wipe out or cleared. You may need to re-install it back again.

WiFi Fix:
There are several wifi fixes that has been suggested.
One of the problem involves wifi not locking on after you have flashed a ROM.
One of the fix that has been suggested involves changing your router DHCP. Setting on the router should be changed from "Never" to shorter time..1-2wks or less.
There are also downloadable wifi fix apk from the Market. Here is one example:
https://market.android.com/details?...mNvbS5icmlsbGlhcHBzLndpZmlhbmRtb3JlZml4ZXIiXQ..
You can also try a search for it.
You can also try using "root explorer", go to /system/etc/wifi and locate the wifi.conf file. Renaming this file to wifi.conf.bak and reboot. This may force the rom to generate a new file.
If it doesn't work, you can rename the *.bak file to it's original name.
I have read some others advising to flash a new modem. I have not tried this so I can't vouch for it.
I suspect that the problem comes from left over from previous settings or bad flash. The other option is to factory reset in cwm, wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik and reflash.

1. How do you back up contacts with google?
2. Can I just use cwm recovery instead of kernel flasher? Which one is better and why is that one better?

fishy,
you may need to spend some alone time with your phone and discover some functions first before you flash anything.
go to settings and look around at all the options.
1. go to contact. menu button on the left lower corner. check them out.
2. cwm recovery or sgs kf is fine. either gets the job done. in some rare moments, one works better than the other.
I've lost root on some rare occasions just using cwm. Kernel flasher works perfect for me with no problems at all.

I thought I'd collect together instructions from a few threads to help people get from stock EE4 to a rooted version. While the instructions will be consolidated, I will be linking back to the original threads for software downloads, so that people will always be getting the latest versions from those threads.
Assumptions
You are running stock EE4 (I'll address getting to this state in another post if I need to, but the only reason for this is that we're flashing the ROM via Clockwork Mod, which I don't think will update the baseband radio for you if it's not already at EE4).
You are on a Windows system (because that's the drivers and software I'll be pointing you to - the basic concepts will be the same for other operating systems.
Preliminary
Download the Droid Charge Windows drivers here and install them.
Download Odin on to your computer from here or here.
Download the version of Clockwork Mod (CWM) Recovery you want to load and put it somewhere on your computer you can remember. Check nitsuj17's post here for the current choices, but as of June 13th, 2011, imnuts's version here was the only choice for a bug free EE4 experience.
Download the rooted kernel you would like to use to get you root access, and put it somewhere on your phone's SD card. Check nitsuj17's post here for the current choices, but as of June 13th, 2011, imnuts's PeanutButta Jelly Time kernel seems to work without requiring an SD card fix. This recommendation is only slightly influenced by the fact I'm eating honey chipotle peanuts while writing this. Choose either a Voodoo lagfix or non-lagfix version. The Voodoo lagfix should be faster, but will require you to convert back if you want to go back to stock. Here's an explanation of what the Voodoo lagfix is. (though this isn't a Galaxy S phone, it's the same concept).
{Optional} Download the ROM you would like to use (if you want to load one) and put it on your phone's SD card (as well as any other fixed files the ROM author posted). Do this if 1) you want a deodexed ROM that can load custom system-wide themes (as opposed to Launcher themes), and/or 2) you would like a ROM that has the bloatware removed already, and/or 3) you would like whatever other improvements the ROM authors added. Again, check nitsuj17's post here for the current choices, but as of June 13th, 2011, the best options for EE4 are either the stock ROM that has been deodexed, GummyCHARGED 1.5, or imnut's EE4 Debloated 4.2.1 ROM. [These are all ROMs installed with CWM, so the instructions below will apply to that scenario, but you may run across a ROM that is installed via Odin. Just install those the same way you are being instructed to install CWM.]
Potentially, you could install a pre-rooted ROM and be able to skip the kernel instead.
As a safety precaution, download the file in this thread and save to your phone in case you have problems with your SD Card because of your new kernel.
Installing CWM using Odin
Shut down your phone and make sure it is unplugged from your computer.
Pull the battery out of your phone.
Make sure all applications are shut down and Antivirus is disabled, and run Odin on your computer.
Plug your phone in to your computer.
Hold the Down volume button until the large yellow triangle downloading screen appears. The first thin rectangle in the upper left of the ODIN applicate should also turn yellow and identify a com port. You can now release the volume key.
Uncheck the box in Odin that says "Auto Reboot".
*For this next part, make sure you are using the PDA button, NOT the Phone button, or you'll hurt your phone* Check the box next to PDA in Odin, and click the PDA button.
Navigate to the .tar.md5 file for CWM you downloaded (probably something like New_CWM_Recovery.tar.md5) and Open it.
Now you should be showing your phone connected to a Com port, Auto Reboot is unchecked, and you have selected the CWM file you want to load, so click the Start button.
In Odin, it should show the download progress, briefly flash a blue "Restart", then show a green "Pass". If it doesn't, try again, and if it repeatedly fails, try the following:
Mine was seeming to lose power and shut off halfway through, and here's how I fixed it. After Odin was loaded on the PC and the phone was in download mode, but before I started the flash, I inserted the battery. This kept the phone on through the process and it succeeded.
Try a different USB port (some people claim the back USB port works better for them, but that's very computer dependent).
If you're on a laptop, make sure it is plugged in. Try a desktop if it continues to fail.
Try a different USB cable.
Make sure Odin is the only software running, and antivirus is disabled!
Redownload the Odin package, it may be corrupt.
Redownload the ROM/kernel/recovery, it may be corrupt.
Shutdown your phone by disconnecting it (and removing the battery if you had to install it for troubleshooting).
If you need visual instructions for running Odin, there are excellent ones here, just make sure to uncheck the auto-reboot box.
At this point, you should have CWM installed, so now let's install your rooted kernel.
Installing kernel through CWM
Boot in to recovery by holding down the Home key, the Up volume key, and the power button. After you see "SAMSUNG" you can let go of the power button, but continue to hold the home key and up volume until you are in recovery.
In CWM, navigate up and down using the volume keys, select using the power key, and go back a menu using the back key.
Select "install zip from sdcard".
Select "choose zip from sdcard".
Find and select your kernel's .zip file
Repeat the above steps, but this time choose the SD Card fix file you downloaded.
Install your ROM
If you decided to install a new ROM as well, you have a couple of extra steps.
Select "wipe data/factory reset".
Select "Yes -- delete all user data".
Go back using the back key.
Select "install zip from sdcard".
Select "choose zip from sdcard".
Find and select your ROM's .zip file.
If needed, install any other fixes the ROM author posted (for instance, Gummy comes with an Exchange Email fix you need to load).
At this point, reboot and you should be all set. If you chose a lagfix kernel, it will take a while to reboot while it converts your file system. You will hear an electronic female voice detailing what is going on while this is happening.
If you are having problems accessing your SDCard with a custom kernel, please follow the instructions in this post.
Thanks to nitsuj17 for maintaining a list of dev work for the Charge, to imnuts, kejar31, and jt1134 for awesome dev work, and to DroidXcon for dev work and the awesome Odin instructions.
Reserving one post, just in case.
Nice clear and to the point write up. This for sure should help alot of folks out getting themselves to a EE4 build that has root access. Nice job!!!!
Just a FYI, I was on EE4 debloated and went to a stock EE4 deodexed for personal reasons. Needless to say, my sdcard is locked out from CWR because I forgot to install the sdcard fix before rebooting recovery - that step is probably necessary for people going with that ROM (I tried the adb commands in the kernel post, but I'm getting an error "unmount command not found" or something like that). Superuser also was wiped out, but a download from Market takes care of that.
I do have the yellow CWR and PBJT kernel installed before I flashed the stock deodexed ROM. When I get home I'm going to start over with ODIN on stock rooted ED1.

So I followed the above instructions to a T on flashing New_CWM_Recovery, which worked fine, and then I installed PBJT's Voodoo kernel, which also worked fine. I rebooted and ran Quadrant, and my score went from 950 on stock EE4 to 1700 with the Voodoo kernel, so it definitely installed. However when I try to go into Titanium Backup it is telling me that I don't have root access. Root Explorer also won't let me mount as R/W anymore. I have Superuser installed. I am relatively new to all of this and could use some help. Any ideas on what is happening?

Just FYI, started with stock EE4 and ended up still having to use the SD Card fix to get around some weird read/write issues. Not sure if it was in read only more, but my mac wasn't recognizing the SD card when in mass storage mode. Installed the fix via CWM and everything worked like a charm. This was immediately after installing PBJTime.
Cheers!
Thanks!
Chadness you are the awesomeness
I've rooted before when I had an Incredible, but was a little leery rooting my charge since I've never used Odin before. Your guide lays out all the steps and was very easy to follow. Thanks a bunch!

No problem. I hadn't used a Samsung and hadn't had to use Odin before, either. Not too bad once it's laid out, but that program can be touchy!
I rooted with Odin straight from EE4 stock to imnuts's CWM and then the Peanut Butta kernel and didn't have any trouble with the SD card. Now to just decide what rom to put on it...
Edit: Ok, nevermind...my SD card shows up on my computer as a cd drive...so, now to fix it.
I'm going to close this one as we currently have http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1121201 in General.
After bdemartino wrote his AWESOME thread for the Mesmerize it seemed only fitting that the Showcase get their very own... And since his Thread was Flawless, with his permission I'm mostly copy/pasting word for word. as I am copying most of this from elijablake . . . so thanks this thread needs some editing, and I will be working on that in the future . . . . specifically the CWM / ROM manager which will not work. I could use some assistance in rewriting that part. TY!

Also, read the Glossary for definitions and such. I was not the sharpest tool in the shed and it took me a while to find this . . .
Disclaimers
CSOUTH IS RELEASEING 2.2 UPDATE THIS WEEK (6/26). You may just want to wait for that to be released. This thread will be updated when the release occurs as how to flash recovery that you can flash roms with etc.
Keep in mind there are many variations to each step, this is what worked for me the easiest. READ ALOT BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH ANYTHING!!
There is always the disclaimer that attempting any of this can and will make your phone dysfunctional and or possibly bricked beyond repair (but most likely just dysfunctional which is a pain in the arse to deal with) if you do not follow steps completely (and of a trustworthy source such as xda - ehm and in the appropriate forum ).
Steps to get to 2.2 (EB11) on your phone:
**Please note that the links were removed by CSouth for copyright (COPY WRONG *****ES) reasons. So if you can find the files somewhere (ahem . . . ) then you can follow these steps. THIS GUIDE IS PURELY FOR EDUCATIONAL VALUE, I DO NOT ADVOCATE BREAKING COPYRIGHT LAW.
I highly recommend using Heimdall rather than Odin. Don't ask me why . . . maybe because it has a command line utility and it is cross platform. So my instructions will be for using Heimdall.
After you have the downloaded files (from wherever you might have gotten them, you bad bad person) unzip and look for the following files:
-factoryfs.rfs
-modem.bin
-recovery.bin
-zImage
1) Put your phone in download mode by powering down your device, removing the battery, connecting the USB to your computer, and holding the volume down button. It shouldn't take long. You should see a little Android with a shovel.
2) In Heimdall, if using the GUI, put all of the files in their obviously appropriate spots. Don't worry if not everything is filled, just use the files that you have. (You should be using the repartition with the .pit file, the zImage with the Kernel, the recovery, and the modem)
If using the command line utility, cd to the directory where you unzipped the files and
Code:
heimdall flash --repartition --pit atlas_v2.2.1.pit --factoryfs factoryfs.rfs --kernel zImage --modem modem.bin --recovery recovery.bin
Wait for the process to finish, your phone will reboot at the end.
3. That is all, now your phone is updated to 2.2.1. Put the battery back in and boot your new shiny toy!
DO NOT DISCONNECT USB DURING THIS PROCESS AS IT COULD BE POTENTIALLY DISASTROUS!!! DON'T EVEN TOUCH IT AS I HAVE FOUND THE USB CONNECTION TO BE A BIT FLAKY!
Also, it is ok if it takes your phone what seems like forever to boot. This happens whenever you install a new kernel, just be patient.
If you have gotten the most updated batch of files, you should have the proper recovery to begin flashing. If not, well seek help . . . You should have RED RECOVERY!
See here for more information about CWM or go on irc.
To access recovery, you can use the three finger method. (Hold down the volume up and down keys and the power button all at the same time when you're turning your phone on) Once you see the Samsung splash screen you can remove your finger from the power button, but keep holding down both volume keys.
You should then go here to check out themes and mods.
Steps For Rooting either 2.1 or 2.2.1
Basically all this means is gaining the ability to give programs/apps and yourself SuperUser access (equivalent of being admin in windows) and also the ability to flash roms via recovery, detailed below.
**NOTE: most custom roms come rooted, so if you are installing a custom rom in 2.2.1, you most likely don't have to go through these steps. Just flash to the ROM you want . . . ***
The easiest way to root is through the z4root.apk. (an application that will run right on your phone)
Download Here
After download, put z4root.apk on your SD card root directory
Then make sure in Settings->Applications that the "Unknown sources" box is checked.
If you don't have a file manager, download a free one from the market, using the file manager navigate to the z4root.apk and select to install it. Note: If you need help at this step, no offense I would suggest getting someone with more experience to help you continue on. I'm serious here
Reboot your phone
After it boots, open the z4root app and press root. At this point it is going to hang, give it 2 minutes and pull the battery. Count to 10, put it back in and turn it on. - This is normal
After your phone boots open z4root again and click root, this time it will run no problems and phone will reboot.
NOTE**IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS WITH z4root: "give Super One Click a try. It's a package you have to download to your computer, but you get to see more of what's actually going on so you know where it's at in the process. I have only used up to version 1.5.5, and I know that version is very capable for the Showcase. It is located here."-This Information provided by phidelt82**
Once you are rooted (you will see the superuser icon in your apps, it will show apps you've given that permission to... eventually) you will need to make sure you have a file manager that can request root permissions (read/write) before you will be able to complete the next step. Search the market for "root file manager" and pick one to download and install.
I use Root Explorer
It's a few bucks, but there's hardly a day that goes by when I don't use it.. (Well worth the money)
THE ECLAIR SECTION IS REMOVED AS CSOUTH IS RELEASING UPDATE THIS WEEK (6/27)

Kies has 2.3 out now =)
Kies Mini have 2.3.5 out now for generic cdma showcase.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using Tapatalk
*Edit*
It seem everyone forgot about the Samsung Showcase Galaxy S Generic CDMA.
I managed to Root it flash CWMR and flash TSM TW 4.0 ROM. but then try to go back to stock and lost 3G. So I returned it and get a new one. No more mods for me I'm done no one cares about Generic CDMA.
Can someone provide directions to install a custom rom for a Showcase running stock 2.3.4? I don't have root. I'd really appreciate any help!
Hi everyone, I am the new owner of a USCC i500 mesmerize, running android 2.2.1 and EE19 update. I love the phone, aside from the annoying lag I get sometimes.
I've been researching countless threads over the last week, probably spent 10 hours just in this forum. There is an unbelievable amount of information out there.
I am looking for a very simple answer to a basic question, that I cannot find the answer to.
My phone is 100% stock. I want to only install the voodoo lag fix. I have attempted this by copying the update.zip file from the project-voodoo site to the sdcard directory and attempted booting in recovery mode. It will not install, I get E: signature not verified. After more research, I find out that it is because I have the 3E recovery system, and I need 2E to install this way.
The questions is: What is the easiest way to install Voodoo lag fix on my phone? I am not looking for any other customization just yet, still learning.
As a favor to this community, I will create a very in depth how to guide to accomplish this for new people, complete with photos and screenshots. There is a lot of information about installing voodoo, but none specific to the i500 and EE19.
Hey, welcome. First. Don't ever flash anything from the.voodoo website. Those are not for our phone and will cause alot of.problems.
As for voodoo, its actually quite easy
Just flash the recovery mentioned in the linked thread. Then head over to fascinate development and fine. Voodoo kernel for touchwiz and download. Place on the base of your sd card and boot to recovery and flash. I have almost all the voodoo kernels in my.dropbox
So once you get recovery flashed. If you would.like a quick link to one just let me know.

This is a basic. Mild undervolt voodol kernel. No overclock. Its called Peanutbutter Jettytime and its developer is Imnuts. After flashing in the custom recovery your first boot will take a few while a creepy lady talks to you. That's normal.

I have Odin3 v1.7. Will this work for this setup?
Is there any other kernel that you would recommend for me? I wouldnt mind BLN or extended button ability....are those dealt with by the rom?
Generally BLN is in rom and kernel. Extended soft key is rom related. If you want to stay pretty much stock but have the extended soft keys you can check out the ee19 pick n pack rom as it is straight stock but has the addons such as extended soft key.
As for the kernel it really just depends on what you're lookin for. If you after a mix of performance and good battery life the the one I linked is good. Plus its a good one to start with. If you want to go for more.battery then there is anothef one by imnuts with more undervolting. Although you may wanna try the one first and see how your phone responds to undervolting before going to low. And if you want more perfomance then you may want to look into the OTB but that would also require root as you need an app to adjust the voltage settings. So it really just depends. Flashing kernels and ROM are not that hard one you get the hang of it. And bricking these phones is damn near impossible. So if you think you would rather try one of the others mentioned just let me know.
And last. I believe that version of odin will work fine.

Awesome, thanks. I have the three files that I need in a folder on my computer.
Odin3 v1.7.exe
cwm recovery-all.tar
imnuts voodoo TW kernel.zip
Please review my step by step procedure to make sure I am correct- I am quite fearful of doing something wrong and not having a working phone, it is my first time
Should I do any sort of backing up before I try this?
1. Open Odin by clicking the .exe file.
2. Click the PDA button, select the cwm-recovery.tar file
3. Turn off phone, remove battery.
4. plug your USB cable into the computer, then plug in your phone.
5. Hold the volume key down until the yellow android appears.
6. Check the Odin software. Your phone should be recognized in one of the boxes.
7. Press the start button.
8. If the yellow box turns green, it was successful.
9. Phone will power off, remove cable. Reinstall battery.
10. Turn phone on, copy the 0531_Imnuts_50_voodoo_TW.zip file to the root of your sd card.
11. Turn phone off.
12. With phone off, hold the volume up, volume down, and power keys until the samsung logo appears. Release the power button but continue to hold down the two volume keys.
13. When the recovery screen appears, select the imnuts.zip folder, press home to select. Phone should install kernel.
Pretty much. Only thing is in recovery bthe back button is the select.button. and the menu.button is back. When in recovery you will see install zip from sd. Select that then choose zip from sd. Then scrol to the imnuts file and select. Also the volume up and down work to move the highlighted feild up and down. Other than that you are good to go. Also to save time. May wanna move the imnuts file to your card before you start. That way once your done with odin you can boot straight into recovery. Let me know if you need any help

Install went perfectly. Phone runs much smoother.
This automatically roots my phone, correct? I notice the superuser icon now.
Do you have any good thread recommendations on some must have rooted apps? I see there a bunch of CPU setting apps on the marketplace- is this recommended?
Any other cool things I should try with my phone now that its rooted?
Download rootchecker from the market and see if it says your indeed rooted. If so then there is several apps that are great. As for CPU apps. Most wont work on the kernel your on. But some will allow you to set the CPU governor and such
As for rooted.apps. I.don't know of a thread right off but root uninstaller, root explorer, file expert is a good free alternative to root explorer, titanium backup. There more.but that's just what I know of right off
Tap-a-Talked from my CM7'd Mesmerize
Ok, Ive got Ti backup and Voodoo controls installed. Got BLN control from the marketplace and it works perfectly. One question though- I notice that on the build list for the kernel:
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/sa...ernel-05-30-11-tw-peanutbutta-jelly-time.html
There are some utilities (voodoo color, smartass cpu,) Is there any way for me to adjust these or reference them from the phone? Or are they just features that run automatically?
Also- my phone still has a lot of the uninstallable bloatware from USCC. I have heard things about 'freezing' these...does the kernel support this? I understand that I can totally remove them once I take the plunge and flash the custom rom. One final note- I have read that I need to disable lagfix before flashing a rom or another kernel...can this be done by simply deselecting lagfix in the voodoo controls, or do I have to add the 'disable lagfix' file and folder?
Thanks again for all your help, you have given me the confidence get my phone to a decent performing state! Scored 1628 on quadrant- prior to the mod, it was around 900
Voodoo color isn't adjustable on that kernel. Set CPU you can use on that one though to set tthe governor. As far as bloatware. If your rooted you can remove most of the bloatware without going to a custom rom. Just use an app like root uninstaller. And make sure you don't remove anything important like the market or things like that.
As for disabling voodoo. I always use the file in the voodoo folder. That way I know its in there. Once its in there reboot and you should hear the lady voice again while it disables it

Ok, so I rebooted my phone last night while messing with the LCD density app. Now, it appears that Ti backup is claiming to not have root access. Same with root uninstaller. However, when I run root checker, it says it is rooted. Any suggestions?
You can try clearing the data in those apps. I have had that happen and most of the time a reboot or clearing the data on the apps fixes it. To clear the data go to settings>applications >manage apps>all.

ALL:
It has been a long time since I posted to this thread. Back then, the Samsung Exhilarate had just come out, and there was no way to root it. Thanks to several other members, most notably j3r3goss and shabbypenguin, I was able to get root on this phone. As of now, this post is very old. The instructions here, are not needed for you to root your Samsung Exhilarate anymore. You are free to read through them, but you should pay attention to the last page (currently page 3). There, j3r3goss posted a link to the the TWRP or CWM recovery files, that you can now use to get root, without following the step-by-step instructions I posted below. I'm leaving the thread up, but for all intents and purposes, consider it closed.
Here's the link to the section you need in order to root your phone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...php?p=32520094
It has been fun, and I've been using my Exhilarate for nearly two years. Because I've been extremely busy, I haven't had time to keep up with the latest changes - but others have. I hope that you found these instructions useful.
In any case, take care and ROOT ON!
Everything past this point is old and no longer applicable
==========================================
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you have UPDATED your phone to ICS, and want to root it, these instructions will work. You will not need to do the last part where you need to update the firmware keys!
Do you plan to update your phone from Gingerbread (Android 2.3) to Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0). Do that first! Otherwise, you'll just have to root again (not that that's a problem, but why???)
I) How to update to ICS:
1) Download Samsung Kies from here: http://www.samsung.com/us/kies/ if you haven't already, and install it, and then run it
2) Put your phone into ODIN (Download mode - see section II below).
3) When Kies detects you phone (your computer will need to install drivers, and then Kies will say it's connecting to your phone, and it will take about 3-4 minutes and finally connect to it), it should let you know that there is an update. Just follow the instructions on Kies and be patient. The phone will update, and once it reboots into normal mode, you'll know it's updated by going to "Settings" and if they are grouped into different sections, then you have ICS. Otherwise, you probably still have GB.
II) How to enter ODIN Mode:
For the Exhilarate I've found it's best to use this sequence:
1) Power phone down
2) Plug the USB cable into your computer (do not plug the phone into the USB cable yet).
3) While pushing and holding both the vol up and vol down buttons, plug the phone into the computer. As soon as you see "SAMSUNG" flash and then dissappear, release the buttons.
4) Phone should boot into ODIN mode.
III) How to Root
What you need:
1) Samsung Galaxy Exhilarate phone (unrooted)
2) microSD Card (any size of 1GB or larger will work)
3) USB cable to connect your phone to your computer
4) Files below
First, download all the files...
1) Download the latest version of ODIN here: ODIN.
2) Download the drivers here: Samsung Galaxy Drivers and run the setup program after unzipping.
3) Download the tar file here: www.Shabbypenguin.com/OUDstuff/Blaze4G/Clockworkmod-Blaze-4G.tar Don't mess with it, just download it somewhere where you can find it later
4) Download SuperUser here: SuperUser Save it somewhere where you can find it later.
Second, conduct the root:
1) Put your phone into Odin (Download mode - see Section II above).
2) With phone in ODIN mode, run Odin.1.85.exe (it's in the folder where you unzipped ODIN too).
3) Odin will launch on your computer. It should show, in the first box under ID:COM, a port in yellow. Mine was Port 5. This means you have successfully connected to your phone.
4) Click the button in ODIN labeled "PDA", and then browse to the .tar file you downloaded above and then select "Open". The file will show up next to the PDA button.
5) Make sure that "Re-Partition" is NOT checked!;
6) Click "Start" and wait till your phone reboots. It should reboot into normal mode. If it doesn't, just power down and reboot into normal mode.
7) Copy the SuperUser.zip file you downloaded above to your phones microSD card.
8) Reboot the phone into recovery mode: While pushing and holding both the vol up and vol down buttons, push the power button. As soon as you see "SAMSUNG" flash, release the buttons. You shouldn't need to have the phone connected to the computer this time. The phone will boot into CWM recovery.
9) using either: the "menu" button to move down and the "home" button to move your selection up; or alternately the volume down button to move down, and the volume up button to move up: highlight "install zip from sdcard". Use the "search" button or power button to select/enter.
10) highlight "choose zip from sdcard" and press the "seach" button to select it.
11) browse to the directory which you copied SuperUser to and select it.
12) scroll down to "Yes - Install Superuser" and select it.
13) Once done, reboot your phone into normal operating mode.
14) If rooting Gingerbread, see Section IV below.
15) If rooting either Gingerbread or ICS, see section V below.
16) If having issues with Root, see section VI below.
IV) Rooting Gingerbread?:
Last: Finish up (Steps 1-4 are ONLY needed if you are still using GingerBread and not Ice Cream Sandwich):
NOTE: Your buttons (the four at the bottom) WILL NOT work at this point. You need to do the following:
======
1) Push your phone dialer as if you were going to make a call.
2) Dial *#*#2663#*#*.
3) You will see the attached thumbnail below on your phone (stolen from j3r3goss).
4) press the bottom button that says "Touch key FW update". Wait. Once it's finished, your bottom row of buttons will work again!
Note: If you are on GB, and not ICS, every time you boot into recovery and then back into operational mode, you will need to do the four steps in this section above!
======
V) Using either GB or ICS:
You do need to do these last steps (I believe):
5) ADDENDUM/UPDATE: At this point, there is one last thing you need to do!: You must go to "Settings/Applications/Development" and Enable USB Debugging! If you don't do this, you will NOT be able to get root access! Also, if for any reason you turn off USB Debugging, make sure you turn it back on! If you lose root access, check this FIRST! If you still can't get root access, boot into recovery mode and wipe the Dalvik Cache, the regular Cache, and "Fix Permissions". Then double check to make sure USB Debugging is ENABLED!
6) You're done! Your phone is now rooted and you can do whatever you want! :highfive:
VI) TROUBLESHOOTING:
If you run into problems
1) Check to make sure that SuperUser is installed on your phone. Check the apps section first, and then, use RootExplorer and check the System/bin folder. If you see SuperUser is in the system/bin folder, then you are very close to being rooted.
If it is not installed:
a) make sure that you copied the superuser.zip file to the EXTERNAL sdcard.
i) Boot the phone up normally
ii) plug the phone into your computer, pull the notification bar down, select USB connection, and tap the "Connect USB storage" button.
iii) Using Winbloze explorer, copy the SuperUser.zip to the external sdCard (on my computer, it is drive F:, and the Internal is drive G.
iv) disconnect once the copy is finished and use any file explorer on your phone to check the contents of the external sdCard (look in the "sdcard/external_sd" folder)
v) if it's not there, then you are doing something wrong. If it is there, shut down the phone, and boot into CWM recovery.
vi) Use CWM recovery to install the superuser.zip file on your phone.
vii) reboot into normal mode
viii) check to make sure that you have enabled USB Debugging
viii) check again to see if SuperUser is now in your apps, and in the system/bin folder.
ix) Run SuperUser 1x, and then close it out.
x) Run ANY app that requires Root Permissions. You should get a request from SuperUser to "Allow" or "Deny" the app root access. Make sure you allow root access. If you make a mistake, you'll need to launch superuser again and completely remove the app from the denied list.
2) Make sure USB Debugging is enabled.
3) if you still can't get root, boot into CWM Recovery, and try clearing the cache and the Dalvik cache, and resetting permissions, then reboot and check everything again. You may need to do this last step several times.
Beyond that, I don't know what else might be causing you to not gain root access, so keep trying.
If anyone has any questions, feel free to PM me.

Thanks for the write-up Black-wolf.
I wasn't aware that the touch key fw needed to be updated each time after booting recovery, hopefully that is something that will be fixed when Shabbypenguin gets his hands on the stock recovery.
Personally I find the easiest, works every time method to get into Download mode is to have the usb cable plugged into the pc, then while holding the volume up/down buttons, plug the cable into the phone, continue holding vol up/down buttons until download mode boots.

Yeah, I figured that out when I went to boot recovery to check something, and then came out of it and the keys weren't working again... :/ At least there's a work around. I suspect, that this is something that an automated app could handle if Shabby or someone else doesn't come up with a permanent fix.

Any update on getting the stock recovery? I blew through rooting my Exhilarate before I noticed the request for help or I would have offered.
The root seems to be working OK for me. JuiceDefender is working great with it to throttle the CPU clock speeds and has really improved my battery life. Also worked OK in blocking all the bloatware apps with the Gemini App Manager. So I don't really have a reason to unroot and go back to stock firmware, but it would be nice to have the option available should I ever hit a problem.
Thanks for all you guys hard work!

Dream_Killer: No, we have not gotten a stock recovery. I've had several inquiries into it, but so far as I know, Shabby has not been able to help out in this regard. I am willing to try myself, but I'll need an un-rooted (and it must never have been rooted) phone.

To get into stock recovery you...
1. open a command terminal on your computer.
2. type cd (where ever you have your ADB located on your computer) for example my is located in desktop/platform-tools so the command would be "cd desktop/platform-tools"
3. type "adb"
4. type "adb reboot recovery"
Presto you are in stock recovery.

We know how to boot into the stock recovery. What we need is to pull the stock recovery image off of the phone so that we can restore the phone to stock.
Btw.. pressing both volume keys while turning on the phone will get you there also.

I'm not exactly sure but it might be just as simple as replacing the audio libs on the blaze rom with the ones from the exhilarate. I'm not sure which files though.
I'm curious if by coming together (blaze and exhilarate users) if there would be enough interest to get official cm support. if the only major diff is audio they could basically support 2 devices for the price of one.

If i knew/or had the kno how, shoot id do it. Is there a program u need to change the libs?. This is a pretty sweet device.
i think you just need root explorer, and copy the new ones over the old ones. I'll look to see if i can find out which files need swapped. Should be able to make a zip to flash through CWM recovery.

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have anything to do with the audio lib files. More so most likely a kernel, modem, or APN problem.
Edit: not to mention the build.prop is completely written for the blaze. I'm working on some things. I'll let you guys know tonight. I wish there was source for this damn phone.

EDIT
There are two phone models
Galaxy S 4G SGH-T959V
Galaxy S 4G SGH-T959
The one without the V is the Vibrant. Wow Samsung. That was confusing. Phone model is Galaxy S 4G SGH-T959V which NOT the Vibrant.
Answer to my own question:
The "Fully Stock One-Click" solution to revert Samsung Galaxy S 4G SGH-T959V to its factory state. It includes:
Repartitioning: Repartition to stock KJ6 [UVKJ6 Android Gingerbread 2.3.6 Firmware]
Reloading: IBL/PBL, SBL, SBL2, PARAM, Kernel, Recovery, FactoryFS, Data, and Modem.
Formatting: Cache and DBdata
Use this code to format the SD Card *2767*3855#
http://sourceforge.net/projects/tea...T959VUVKJ6_STOCK-UVKJ6-One-Click.jar/download
1. Make sure Visual Studio C++ runtime, Java SE Runtime Environment and drivers are installed under Windows.

2. Press and hold USB icon in upper left corner then slide it down to get Notifications displayed > TAP on USB Connected > Turn on USB storage > OK > Your SD Card is accessible from your computer now.
[Do the same and TAP on Turn off USB storage to disconnect the phone from computer.]
3. Make sure to remove the /sdcard/Voodoo directory from your SD Card.
4. Power off your phone.
5. Take your USB cable and plug it into the computer ONLY, not the phone.
5. Hold down both the volume up and down at the same time then plug in the USB cable to your phone with the other hand. Keep holding the volume up and down buttons until you see the Download mode green [Warning!!] message.
5. Press Volume Up button to see" [Downloading... Do not turn off Target!!!]
6. Copy T959VUVKJ6_STOCK-UVKJ6-One-Click.jar to C drive then type this inside DOS prompt to start the process.
C:
java -jar T959VUVKJ6_STOCK-UVKJ6-One-Click.jar
7. Click on [Flash] > You will get a window that instructs you what to do > OK > to click on Options > List All Devices > From drop down menu, Select: SAMSUNG USB Composite Device > Replace Driver > Wait for it to finish > Close > Close the [Replace Driver] Window.
8. Now you should be able to click on [Flash] again and revert to factory state.

Saying vibrant gives me a bad feeling in my stomach. Please take your battery out and confirm the model number says: SGH-T959V
If so, Just say Galaxy S 4G. Saying Vibrant causes unrest in this forum. Too many bricks.
Which version do you see at the top of recovery?
When you say ClockworkMod, do you mean Rom Manager or the ClockworkMod Recovery? Rom Manager doesn't work on the SGH-T959V.
Sorry, just trying to clear up some terminology before we make mistakes
SGH-T959V
FCC ID: A3LSGHT959V
I thought that the term 'Vibrant' is just a name to distinguish T-Mobile as the carrier of the Galaxy S 4G phone.
GOAL:
1. While using the phone, start an app and tell it to save the current ROM.
2. The phone reboots and saves it to your SSD card.
I was using this to accomplish that
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.rommanager
But upon reboot on the SGH-T959V, I get the error: signature verification failed ClockworkMod
I thought that in order to not get this error, I would need CF-Root Kernel?
Stickied: Don't use rom manager aka rom mangler!!! Thanks management!!!
Please use the backup in your recovery, not any user-land application.
Especially if you are coming off GB, you might want to read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1897227 for some suggestions on how to back up and restore. Most GB "system" data is not binary-compatible with ICS.
Thank you. What does the acronym GB stand for? Edit: I think you are referring to Android 2.3 version on phone, thanks. When you say don't use the app, can you use the App on CyanogenMod 7.2 which I plan to install on the Galaxy S 4G or are you just advising against it on the native ROM?
The link in the quote below appears to only lead to some internet petition, do you have another link?
What is the exact command to use with Terminal Emulator (if it can be used) to push the file to /system/bin as instructed?

Here is CWM Final for the SGS4G.
You will still need to modify your stock recovery binary to be able to use CWM.
Kernel Devs can also compile CWM into their kernel by extracting the update.zip and building it into their initramfs.
To modify recovery download this file
http://www.multiupload.com/UW4R9NXSVO
and use root explorer or adb push the file to /system/bin
DO NOT delete the current one there, or rename any files.
Just overwrite it.

GB is "Gingerbread"
You don't need to flash CWM any more. Use the Heimdall One-Click instead.
Thank you. My goals for phone Galaxy S 4G SGH-T959V are:
Backup current default T-Mobile 2.3.6 ROM onto SD card.
Backup CyanogenMod 7.2 after it is installed onto SD card.
1. Does Heimdall One-Click allow me to backup T-Mobile ROM 2.3.6 if the phone is rooted? Which software is used for this if not https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.rommanager?
2. Can ROM Manager ClockworkMod be used on CyanogenMod 7.2 or is your advice against it only for T-Mobile native ROM?
Backup your data as described in the thread I linked -- Titanium Backup and potentially other tools for Contacts, SMS/MMS, call logs
Do not use ROM Manager. Period.
There is no need, in my mind, to back up the stock "ROM" (in contrast to your data), since there is a one-click that restores your phone to "stock."
You make a good point about stock ROM for most people, but is the one click-option to return to Native available *after* CyanogenMod is installed?
But to rephrase my original intent:
To preserve all custom settings and installs, ideally I would like to to simply start an app, the phone reboots, reimages, and boots right into either Native ROM or CyanogenMod, can imaging process be started *from* inside both Native and Cayanogen ROMs?
I understand you are saying not to use this under any circumstances on Galaxy S 4G: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.rommanager
Once again, my goal is not to simply backup contacts, my goal is a complete system image - containing all settings, fonts, apps and contacts - just like imaging an OS partition on Windows. You mentioned Titanium Backup, is this what I should use to accomplish that:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup
I am trying to apply the same approach I use on the PC: it takes me less time to reimage my complete operating system partition than it takes time for a short bathroom break. Slightest Windows hickup and I nuke the entire partition and reimage. Simply trying to do that on the phone, setup everything just like I want it to be then create images for stock and native and launch the reimage process with just one click.
You'll have to flash just a GB kernel first, one that has root and recovery built in. You can make a "nandroid" backup from that. That backup can only restore your GB state over a GB ROM.
You won't be able to go from any MTD ROM (any ICS, some recent GB) to BML (stock GB) because the "disk partitioning" is different without flashing "back-to-stock" first. (Namely, your GB nandroid backup can't be used if you are partitioned using MTD.)
You won't be able to just restore an image of your data from GB to an ICS ROM without corrupting things horribly.
If you're not comfortable, I would follow the steps I gave in the thread I linked. It goes step by step and should give you confidence that you can flash and migrate data.
What you're looking for is nandroid backups which you can create and restore from recovery.
However the current problem with that is the BML vs MTD file systems(unsure about the terminology here) between the stock Samsung rom and it's variants and the cyanogen based roms.
Currently the only method to go back from MTD is to one-click back to BML and then restore a nandroid for that.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1358498
This is currently the easiest method to go back to BML, the one-click by eollie has the latest kernel with the correct cwm to flash over to MTD but you can't restore a nandroid from one to the other.
OK, check. Flash Kernels, then reimage Native or Cyanogen Mods accordingly only after flashing Kernels.
Before installing CyanogenMod, with the current Kernel being native, can I use any app to image? Can Titanium Backup do it?
In other words, I will go through the linked information in detail of course, but if I may just ask you, can this be a one-two process of:
1. Flash Kernel
2. Use Titanium Backup from within Native and CyanogenMod ROMs. (any other app suggestions for this, I'd like to sample a few to see which one is best for me?)
Image -- no -- your phone is supposed to be "locked down" when you got it from the carrier. This means no low-level access to users. Titanium Backup does not image, it creates backups of the files. (You could do it using 'nix command-line tools, but not only it is a bad idea to image a filesystem on a running system, but also it doesn't sound like you're a' nix user.)
Again, you can't restore a BML "nandroid" backup on an MTD filesystem or vice versa. For that matter, you can't easily restore a Clockwork Recovery backup using TWRP or vice versa and, last I checked, you couldn't restore selected partitions using Clockwork Recovery (though TWRP will).
Backup? Not really. Most backup programs require root access.
Other apps instead of Titanium Backup? There really isn't any other Android app that an experienced user would go with these days, as far as I know. For that matter, I would guess a majority of the "serious" users have purchased the "Pro" version.
This doesnt require root access. But it is limited to what you can do.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rerware.android.MyBackupPro
c627627 follow what jeff is suggesting. Currently in a unrooted state you are very limited to what you can do and pretty much what you are asking is impossible until you gain root access. You can flash antonx heimdall one click and get root access and shouldnt lose your current settings. But you might have to set everything up again so be prepared.
But te very first sentence of this thread is telling you that my phone is rooted.

My phone is rooted. I am not sure if you missed that or if you are referring to other limitations. On my Motorola Cliq, I use this to quickly image CyanogenMod with just one tap: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.rommanager
If it is the same version of CyanogenMod, is it something in the hardware of the phone that has changed now so that with older phones you could of that and with newer ones you cannot?
I am definitely only interested in full scale operating system backup only, so Titanium backup would not work for me. I want every setting in every app, every setting and every option I set on the phone backed just like I make CyanogenMod 7.2 backups on my Motorola Cliq now.
So specifically, initial points of confusion are:
Why can I back up old Motorola Cliq rooted phone but not the rooted Galaxy S 4G using one tap backup?
I think we need to establish if you were mistaken about my phone not being rooted or if you are talking about Native ROM vs CyanogenMod backup options. Are all the replies above about unrooted phones?
On a stock phone, even if rooted, you don't have a recovery that lets you make an image backup.
All phones are different. What works on one won't necessarily work on another. The SGS4G is very different, even from other Samsung phones.
Unless you flash a kernel and recovery, you're not going to be able to do an image backup.
At this point I'd read the "Before you flash anything..." post and the Heimdall one-click threads. What you may know from another phone isn't how the SGS4G works.
Once again, do not use ROM Manager.
I think you should re-examine why you are flashing anything and how much reading and understanding you need to complete before you try.
Posted from my SGS4G, thanks to Team Acid development
Thanks. That clarifies it. Since other posters were using the term 'unrooted' I did not know whether they understood that the phone is rooted.
I will not use the ROM manager with this phone at all. I now understand that there is no App that would backup the phone's operating system, regardless if it is native or CyanogenMod.
I will take time reading the linked threads to figure out the best way to create/restore images.
Once you have custom recovery installed, you'll be able to do image backups.
However, an Android app can't reliably do an image backup as it can't stop filesystem writes.

If you have a stock (or mainly stock) ROM installed, you need to get into "recovery mode" on boot. The "guaranteed" way into recovery is to press and hold VolUp and VolDn at the same time, while holding them, press the Power key until you see the boot sequence start, release Power, and release VolUp/VolDn once you see recovery start. On many custom ROMs, there is an option when you long-press the Power key and get the pop-up menu. You can also do that on a rooted phone that is connected to your computer with adb by using $ adb reboot recovery (for any ROM, I believe).
