[Q] Step by Step?

Hey guys!
Noob here who has flashed other phones in the past, but never anything Android based. Is there a step by step guide anywhere for the Mesmerize? Something generic and simple to follow from post root to a fully flashed phone?

Well our moderator is nowhere to be seen.. we should have a step by step sticked.. but we don't.
1) Root your phone. Search the forums to figure out how to do that.
2) Install RomManager and the ClockworkMod Recovery. There's a thread for that as well.
3) Download and install the ROM of your choice. Roms are located in the Dev Forums.
The details can be found in the Mesmerize General and the Mesmerize Development Forums. Search is your friend.

When I began this process about 2 weeks ago, I was at the same experience level as you Tyler. This is what worked easiest for me for my US Cellular Mesmerize.
(I'm just going to elaborate a bit on what Dcow posted, hopefully he doesn't mind .
Also keep in mind there are many variations to each step, this is what worked for me the easiest as a newb, hoping it does for you too.
And last but not least. There is always the disclaimer that attempting any of this can and will make your phone dysfunctional and or possibly bricked beyond repair (but most likely just dysfunctional which is a pain in the arse to deal with) if you do not follow steps completely (and of a trustworthy source such as xda).
So take your time, read each step that these people have taken the time to carefully write up, and you'll be just fine. Be patient as things don't always move fast and you never want to freak out as you may screw things up bad, when it's actually just taking longer than you would expect. There is alot going on behind the scenes so just give it time, trust me!
1) Root your phone. - Basically all this means is gaining the ability to give programs/apps and yourself SuperUser access (equivalent of being admin in windows) and also the ability to flash roms via recovery, detailed below.
The easiest way to root is to acquire the z4root.apk.
Download Here
After download, put z4root.apk on your SD card root directory
Then make sure in Settings->Applications that the "Unknown sources" box is checked.
If you don't have a file manager, download a free one from the market, using the file manager navigate to the z4root.apk and select to install it.
Reboot your phone
After it boots, open the z4root app and press root. At this point it is going to hang, give it 2 minutes and pull the battery. Count to 10, put it back in and turn it on. - This is normal, trust me.
After it reboots open z4root again and run it, this time it will run no problems and phone will reboot.
Once you are rooted (you will see the superuser icon in your apps, it will show apps you've given that permission to eventually) you will need to make sure you have a file manager that can request root permissions (read/write) before you will be able to complete the next step. Search the market for "root file manager" and pick one to download and install.
Also at this step I would download and install RomManager and TerminalEmulator as you will need these later.
2) Install RomManager and the ClockworkMod Recovery. These will basically just give you the ability to boot into recovery where you can more easily flash kernel's/rom's and anything else you wish to push to your phone.
I was able to install the Clockwork Mod Recovery very easily just by simply using the root file manager app I downloaded with these instructions.
Download the two zip files located in the first post here
Place both files on your SD card root
Using the root file explorer app, move the Redbend_ua file from the SD card to /system/xbin/
Long press on the Redbend_ua file and click permissions, there should be one check missing, check that.
Now open the TerminalEmulator
NOTE:The spaces below are actual spaces and the bml8 is a lowercase "L" not a "1" there is also a space after cd, after redbend_ua, after restore, and after recovery.bin
TYPE THIS ALL EXACTLY AS SHOWN BETWEEN THE QUOTES
at the command line ($) type "su" (then hit enter)
Type "cd /system/xbin" (then hit enter, which changes directory)
Type "redbend_ua restore /sdcard/recovery.bin /dev/block/bml8" (then hit enter, It will now scroll a bunch of text and reboot.)
After phone boots, open RomManager
Click on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery
Select the Samsung Fascinate your phone will still be the mesmerize
At this point you're all stock and ready for new kernel/rom.
3) Install Voodoo lagfix kernel and new 5.0 sound
If you want speed and good battery life (and high standard marks) +unlocking the headphone amp and eq controls (it makes even the samsung headset sound killer) go here and follow those steps for using your now functional recovery mode to flash the new Voodoo 5.0 kernel.
Note: There are a few ways of getting into this recovery mode, the best way if all else fails is to hold phone from the back with left hand (thumb on volume button, in the middle holding both down and pointer on power button) hold these down until the mesmerize logo pops up then slide your thumb down a bit to volume down only (if you slip don't worry it might blink but it'll still go to recovery)
Note: If you are more code/computer oriented there is a method using a program called ADB, which I'm not familiar with and seemed more complicated than what I went with. Search for that on the forum if you wish to do the above process that way instead.
4) Download and install the ROM of your choice.
Just pick one from this list Here, read through the first post of each before you decide, some are plug and play some take a few steps first.

That is the old Voodoo kernel, you will need to go to the link I listed in my post for Voodoo 5, and yes you can simply disable lagfix and flash the new one over the old.
And no problems on the write up, I spent a good amount of time digging up the links and stuff but I'll spend a little more time polishing it and will post it in another thread for Scotsman to stickie.
And to answer your last question, no I'm having no problems with any functions of my phone after upgrading to voodoo 5.

There isn't a button, per se. When you go in to recovery, there is a disable lagfix option under voodoo. You can put the file, disable_lagfix, in the voodoo folder on your sdcard to do the same thing.
He does write up a good how-to, though, doesn't he.

I think the reason you don't usually see this much detail from others is because they are more developmentally enabled and therefore "forget" to break down the little steps that are second nature to them but foreign language to a non-developer.

Thanks. I found it. and disabled it aready. now i just download the file in the write-up and boot into recovery, install zip from sd card and select my file correct?

I always wipe dalvik cache (in advance settings within Recover) before flashing anything.
So it's;
Disable Lagfix
Reboot (you'll hear the chick reversing the process)
Clear Dalvik
Install voodoo 5.0 from zip
reboot
re-enable lagfix and reboot one last time.
Then you'll need to download the voodoo controller app from the market to control the amp gain and set a few other eq settings.

Ive done all that except re-enable lag-fix. Noone ever mentions that step. Do I just remove the "disable_lagfix" file from the voodoo file and reboot?

I just enable/disable it through the voodoo menu in recovery, much easier than pushing files around. In your case i think you should be able to delete the file and reboot, but if not you may just need to go into voodoo and enable it that way (after removing the disable file)

I guess if I edit a post and dont finish it, the post gets deleted. Oh well, I asked how to reenalbe lag fix but i figured it out. Like I said I had to put the disable lag_fix file in the voodoo folder. I just had to remove it from that folder.
Is there a way to tell (besides the quickness and the extended battery life) how do i tell if its voodoo5? just out of curiousity

Just a guess here but possibly under About Phone the kernel version might? Mine is listed as 2.6.29
I would also think that when trying to use the Voodoo app it would fail if you didn't have the kernel so that would be a sign too, if that's what you're looking for.

Now I think I might wait to see the awesome developers come up with for 2.2. I dont mind the stock 2.1 for now. I just dont want to keep flashing ROM's, if they might be close to getting a version of 2.2 going. I can wait....I think.

2.2 is so close, you should be able to smell it. I've had it's froyo-ey goodness all over my phone and even with the issues we're still having, I flash it back every night when I get home to play with it.

[GUIDE] Newbie's Step-by-Step: From Stock USCC Mesmerize -> Custom Rom/Kernel

THIS GUIDE IS SPECIFICALLY FOR THE MESMERIZE
Steps To Customize Your Mesmerize (For upgrading from any version to FROYO 2.2 EC10)
1.) Upgrade from any setup to 2.2 EC10 (Official Froyo) - If you have not already done so, you will need to upgrade your phone to EC10 2.2. If you have already, skip to the next step. (You can check this in "settings->about phone" under "firmware version" (should be 2.2.1 if you've already done this) NOTE: There is a custom rom listed in this post, I will detail that down below.
NOTE: The roms for this version come pre-rooted, so no need to root. However, if you have issues with superuser permissions (or are staying stock with root), you can use the SuperOneClick Root tool located here
If in the previous step you installed the leak that had the CWM upgrade pre-loaded or you have already manually updated CWM, skip step 2.- You know you have the updated recovery if when you boot to recovery it takes you to the red recovery with voodoo, backup and other options.
2.) Upgrade CWM manually (if needed) downloading this., (this next step by step will upgrade your recovery so that you are able to flash custom rom's/theme's/kernels.)
1.Shut phone off, pull battery out and leave it out.
2.Run odin (assuming you have it installed)
3.Load the cwm-recovery-all.tar file into the PDA spot
4.Plug usb into computer, then into your phone.
5.Hold the volume down key until phone goes into download mode, there will be a yellow android picture.
6.In odin, one of your com: spots should light up yellow - this means your phone is seen by odin (if not you may need drivers)
7.If above step is true, press start and odin will flash the recovery file to your phone. If all goes well the yellow box will turn green and your phone will power off.
8.Now you're able to boot into CWM recovery using the three button method (see glossary here)
3.)Upgrade Kernel With EC10 brought a new turn of events which thanks to jt has allowed fasicnate users to develop kernels which are compatible on the entire line of this model, so be sure to read phidelt's post on kernel's located here and choose one that is compatible with your rom. AOSP and MIUI require a different kernel, so keep this in mind as if you're restoring you may need to flash the appropriate kernel as the restore does not do this for you.
4.) Flash a custom ROM Choose from one of the Custom Rom's that we have out right now;
EC10 Pick and Pack DOWNLOAD HERE -- This is our stock deodexed rom with bloatware moved to a seperate .zip containing flashable packages with those removed apps. - < created by: phidelt82 >
EC10 Custom RomDOWNLOAD HERE - This is a custom rom built by phidelt82 which incorporates some aspects of AOSP into the EC10 rom - launcher and calendar are to name a few.
AOSP -DOWNLOAD HERE - This is a custom ROM/Kernel built with the android open source project code (by lmartin), one of the most "vanilla" rom's meaning no manufacturer's additions such as touchwiz. It's very lean and runs well, but is in BETA stage so beware it may not be for your daily use. NOTE: If you use this rom/kernel and are wanting to return to EC10 you will need to reflash the appropriate kernel for the ROM you are restoring to (for example touchwiz)
MIUI -DOWNLOAD HERE - This is a custom ROM running on the AOSP kernel, you can learn more about it in the thread linked here.NOTE: If you use this rom/kernel and are wanting to return to EC10 you will need to reflash the appropriate kernel for the ROM you are restoring to (for example touchwiz)
GAS EC10 PNP based rom -DOWNLOAD HERE - This is a custom ROM that runs with the touchwiz kernel. Learn more about it in the linked thread.
HEINZ 57 EC10 (PNP/ED01/EC10 based rom) -DOWNLOAD HERE - This is a custom ROM that runs with the touchwiz kernel. Thanks to Sbrissen, it has a lot of extra settings in the TM parts settings menu, allowing you even more customizing. Learn more about it in the linked thread.
5.)Flash a custom THEME Pick one that's compatible with the ROM you are running, from this list.
HELP MY PHONE IS SCREWED (GO TO STOCK 2.2)!!!: If you weren't attentive and made a mistake or haphazardly missed a step and now you're stuck at a boot screen or one of many other failure points, stop what you're doing. Take a deep breath, wu-sa, grus-fraba, whatever you need to do to calm yourself and simply go to this thread and get your phone back to stock. You may not need to go all the way stock, but it seems to be the easiest, and requires the least amount of help from the developers (who have better things to do than answer questions of careless/unlucky people!! - no offense intended) This is also how you would handle getting your phone back to stock before trying to turn it in for repair.NOTE: Being as going to stock means it's expecting your phone to be formatted to RFS instead of EXT4 (lagfix enabled) you should disable lagfix before doing so or you will have errors and md5 mismatches which will disallow you from flashing from recovery. If for some reason you can't access recovery you will just have to disable lagfix manually which is detailed in this thread here.

So make sure you're in a comfortable environment (not a good idea to be trying to accomplish this while slamming beers at the bar), take your time, read each step that these people have taken the time to carefully write up (then follow it), and you'll be just fine. Be patient as things don't always move fast and you never want to freak out as you may screw things up bad, when it's actually just taking longer than you would expect. Always give it at least 5 minutes before you determine it's looping or crashing or whatevering, there is alot going on behind the scenes, trust me!

After your phone boots open z4root again and click root, this time it will run no problems and phone will reboot.
NOTE**IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS WITH z4root: "give Super One Click a try. It's a package you have to download to your computer, but you get to see more of what's actually going on so you know where it's at in the process. I have only used up to version 1.5.5, and I know that version is very capable for the Mesmerize on 2.1. It is located here."-This Information provided by phidelt82**

(Recovery is basically a bios like interface - but it's different than the stock version)
I was able to install the Clockwork Mod Recovery very easily just by simply using the root file manager app I had downloaded, along with following with the instructions.
(In your file manager, MAKE SURE YOU ARE Read/Write not Read/Only, for RootExplorer there is a toggle at the top, other ones you may have to enable this through settings, others may just be R/W by default, you will just have to determine this or google the app)
Download the two zip files located in the first post here
Place both files on your SD card root if you were using a computer to download them or you could always download them through your phone's browser
Using the root file explorer app, move the Redbend_ua file from the SD card to /system/xbin/
Long press on the Redbend_ua file and click permissions, there should be one check missing, check that so that all are marked. Save and exit.
Now open TerminalEmulator (Come with me if you want to live )

3) KERNEL: Install Voodoo lagfix kernel and new 5.0 sound
If you want speed and good battery life (and high standard marks) +unlocking the headphone amp and eq controls (it makes even the samsung headset sound killer) go here and follow those steps for using your now functional recovery mode to flash the new Voodoo 5.0 kernel.
You could always install the old Voodoo kernel located here, if for some reason you do not want to take advantage of the new, sound improved one.
Note: Just an FYI, after installing custom kernel's you will always have an issue on start up of seeing a flashing black box in the middle of the samsung logo. This can be corrected by installing a custom boot screen (only requires root access) and you can find out how here.
Note: There are a few ways of getting into this recovery mode, the best way if all else fails is to hold phone from the back with left hand (thumb on volume button, in the middle holding both down and pointer on power button) hold these down until the mesmerize logo pops up then slide your thumb down a bit to volume down only (if you slip don't worry it might blink but it'll still go to recovery) Sometimes this is easier with the back case off. However the best way, is to download and use the QuickBoot app, it allows boot to recovery/reboot/poweroff options from the app.
4) Custom ROM : Download and install the ROM of your choice.
Just pick one from this list Here-They are all there along with other very useful links, read through the first post of each before you decide, some are plug and play some take a few steps first. These are currently only 2.1 eclair builds however right now they have an (somewhat unstable) 2.2 froyo rom/kernel that being worked on but is not quite yet ready for day to day use (some features are not working quite yet). But be patient because these guys will have something long before Samsung let's us have theirs, but who cares - "ours" will be so much better
HELP MY PHONE IS SCREWED!!! Hey thanks, and believe it or not this is the exact reason I decided to put this together with this much detail (aside from answering someone's question). I figure, I'm no android developer but I can follow instruction and explain myself pretty well so I put this together to take some of that off of you guys. (A small token of my appreciation)

Good Job! This pretty much covers everything. Hopefully soon we can add to it :S

Is there a rough idea of the amount of time it will take to complete? I have pulled the battery a couple of times, and it just sits at the "running exploit in order to obtain root access" spinning the icon for several minutes. I have re-started it for a third time, now just letting it spin to see if it will come around.

Usually it only takes about a minute or so to complete. If it gives you problems, give Super One Click a try. It's a package you have to download to your computer, but you get to see more of what's actually going on so you know where it's at in the process. I have only used up to version 1.5.5, and I know that version is very capable for the Mesmerize on 2.1. It is located here.

The "redbend_ua restore" part was completed successfully, and after the phone rebooted I launched Rom Manager and clicked "flash ClockworkMod Recovery", selected the Fascinate, and keep getting an error message stating "An error occured while downloading your recovery."
Am I doing something wrong? Is there another way to get clockwork recovery onto my phone? I am on WiFi with a strong signal (I'm about 3 feet from the router) and the connection is working fine in other apps (browser and whatnot) so I don't think it's my internet connection.
Any help for this total newb to the android community would be greatly appreciated.

I seem to be running into problems. Whenever I go into recovery mode my phone doesn't verify the update.zip file. I was wondering how do I fix it or get another one? Also what part does this file play in changing roms?

Edit: got it working. I had to rerun redbend_ua and make sure it went through a full reboot and didn't stall. I think I wasn't giving it super user permissions. Great writeup thanks again!

I'm having some problems and was wondering if someone could help me please.....
I successfully installed the EA11 leak and updated from 2.1 to 2.2. However, when I boot into the blue recovery and try to hit update.zip from there it just shows me an exlamation icon and never goes into the red recovery instantly like it should according to everyone's directions.
At thiis screen it will stay showing this icon, and the only way off of it is to hit the menu key which takes you back to the blue recovery screen. It then has a description below the blue text that says:
-- Install from package...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:Failed to verify whole file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
Am I doing something wrong? Any feedback would be so appreciated.

[HOW-TO] Get a rooted version of EE4

I thought I'd collect together instructions from a few threads to help people get from stock EE4 to a rooted version. While the instructions will be consolidated, I will be linking back to the original threads for software downloads, so that people will always be getting the latest versions from those threads.
Assumptions
You are running stock EE4 (I'll address getting to this state in another post if I need to, but the only reason for this is that we're flashing the ROM via Clockwork Mod, which I don't think will update the baseband radio for you if it's not already at EE4).
You are on a Windows system (because that's the drivers and software I'll be pointing you to - the basic concepts will be the same for other operating systems.
Preliminary
Download the Droid Charge Windows drivers here and install them.
Download Odin on to your computer from here or here.
Download the version of Clockwork Mod (CWM) Recovery you want to load and put it somewhere on your computer you can remember. Check nitsuj17's post here for the current choices, but as of June 13th, 2011, imnuts's version here was the only choice for a bug free EE4 experience.
Download the rooted kernel you would like to use to get you root access, and put it somewhere on your phone's SD card. Check nitsuj17's post here for the current choices, but as of June 13th, 2011, imnuts's PeanutButta Jelly Time kernel seems to work without requiring an SD card fix. This recommendation is only slightly influenced by the fact I'm eating honey chipotle peanuts while writing this. Choose either a Voodoo lagfix or non-lagfix version. The Voodoo lagfix should be faster, but will require you to convert back if you want to go back to stock. Here's an explanation of what the Voodoo lagfix is. (though this isn't a Galaxy S phone, it's the same concept).
{Optional} Download the ROM you would like to use (if you want to load one) and put it on your phone's SD card (as well as any other fixed files the ROM author posted). Do this if 1) you want a deodexed ROM that can load custom system-wide themes (as opposed to Launcher themes), and/or 2) you would like a ROM that has the bloatware removed already, and/or 3) you would like whatever other improvements the ROM authors added. Again, check nitsuj17's post here for the current choices, but as of June 13th, 2011, the best options for EE4 are either the stock ROM that has been deodexed, GummyCHARGED 1.5, or imnut's EE4 Debloated 4.2.1 ROM. [These are all ROMs installed with CWM, so the instructions below will apply to that scenario, but you may run across a ROM that is installed via Odin. Just install those the same way you are being instructed to install CWM.]
Potentially, you could install a pre-rooted ROM and be able to skip the kernel instead.
As a safety precaution, download the file in this thread and save to your phone in case you have problems with your SD Card because of your new kernel.
Installing CWM using Odin
Shut down your phone and make sure it is unplugged from your computer.
Pull the battery out of your phone.
Make sure all applications are shut down and Antivirus is disabled, and run Odin on your computer.
Plug your phone in to your computer.
Hold the Down volume button until the large yellow triangle downloading screen appears. The first thin rectangle in the upper left of the ODIN applicate should also turn yellow and identify a com port. You can now release the volume key.
Uncheck the box in Odin that says "Auto Reboot".
*For this next part, make sure you are using the PDA button, NOT the Phone button, or you'll hurt your phone* Check the box next to PDA in Odin, and click the PDA button.
Navigate to the .tar.md5 file for CWM you downloaded (probably something like New_CWM_Recovery.tar.md5) and Open it.
Now you should be showing your phone connected to a Com port, Auto Reboot is unchecked, and you have selected the CWM file you want to load, so click the Start button.
In Odin, it should show the download progress, briefly flash a blue "Restart", then show a green "Pass". If it doesn't, try again, and if it repeatedly fails, try the following:
Mine was seeming to lose power and shut off halfway through, and here's how I fixed it. After Odin was loaded on the PC and the phone was in download mode, but before I started the flash, I inserted the battery. This kept the phone on through the process and it succeeded.
Try a different USB port (some people claim the back USB port works better for them, but that's very computer dependent).
If you're on a laptop, make sure it is plugged in. Try a desktop if it continues to fail.
Try a different USB cable.
Make sure Odin is the only software running, and antivirus is disabled!
Redownload the Odin package, it may be corrupt.
Redownload the ROM/kernel/recovery, it may be corrupt.
Shutdown your phone by disconnecting it (and removing the battery if you had to install it for troubleshooting).
If you need visual instructions for running Odin, there are excellent ones here, just make sure to uncheck the auto-reboot box.
At this point, you should have CWM installed, so now let's install your rooted kernel.
Installing kernel through CWM
Boot in to recovery by holding down the Home key, the Up volume key, and the power button. After you see "SAMSUNG" you can let go of the power button, but continue to hold the home key and up volume until you are in recovery.
In CWM, navigate up and down using the volume keys, select using the power key, and go back a menu using the back key.
Select "install zip from sdcard".
Select "choose zip from sdcard".
Find and select your kernel's .zip file
Repeat the above steps, but this time choose the SD Card fix file you downloaded.
Install your ROM
If you decided to install a new ROM as well, you have a couple of extra steps.
Select "wipe data/factory reset".
Select "Yes -- delete all user data".
Go back using the back key.
Select "install zip from sdcard".
Select "choose zip from sdcard".
Find and select your ROM's .zip file.
If needed, install any other fixes the ROM author posted (for instance, Gummy comes with an Exchange Email fix you need to load).
At this point, reboot and you should be all set. If you chose a lagfix kernel, it will take a while to reboot while it converts your file system. You will hear an electronic female voice detailing what is going on while this is happening.
If you are having problems accessing your SDCard with a custom kernel, please follow the instructions in this post.

Needless to say, my sdcard is locked out from CWR because I forgot to install the sdcard fix before rebooting recovery - that step is probably necessary for people going with that ROM (I tried the adb commands in the kernel post, but I'm getting an error "unmount command not found" or something like that). Superuser also was wiped out, but a download from Market takes care of that.
I do have the yellow CWR and PBJT kernel installed before I flashed the stock deodexed ROM. When I get home I'm going to start over with ODIN on stock rooted ED1.

Thanks for the info, I hadn't tested that!

So I followed the above instructions to a T on flashing New_CWM_Recovery, which worked fine, and then I installed PBJT's Voodoo kernel, which also worked fine. I rebooted and ran Quadrant, and my score went from 950 on stock EE4 to 1700 with the Voodoo kernel, so it definitely installed. However when I try to go into Titanium Backup it is telling me that I don't have root access. Root Explorer also won't let me mount as R/W anymore. I have Superuser installed. I am relatively new to all of this and could use some help. Any ideas on what is happening?

Just FYI, started with stock EE4 and ended up still having to use the SD Card fix to get around some weird read/write issues. Not sure if it was in read only more, but my mac wasn't recognizing the SD card when in mass storage mode. Installed the fix via CWM and everything worked like a charm. This was immediately after installing PBJTime.

No problem. I hadn't used a Samsung and hadn't had to use Odin before, either. Not too bad once it's laid out, but that program can be touchy!

I rooted with Odin straight from EE4 stock to imnuts's CWM and then the Peanut Butta kernel and didn't have any trouble with the SD card. Now to just decide what rom to put on it...
Edit: Ok, nevermind...my SD card shows up on my computer as a cd drive...so, now to fix it.

I've been on this site a little over than an hour and a member for about 10 minutes now and i'm trying to find ways to better my devices performance, I am a little familiar with cyanogen mod and know that is is not yet available for the SGS4G and i know better than asking when it will be released. How ever I did see something called 'bionix Black Ice ROM' people i here seemed to be stoked about that. Now what exactly is that? will it help my phones performance? will it get rid of all the bloatware? next if it does help with all of that could somebody step by step walk me through the process or make a youtube vdeo showing how to install black ice step by step? i'm obviously new to all this and really don't wanna brick my phone.

to answer your questions: yes. lol. no more bloat, everything will be much faster and basically you will have the phone of your dreams.
i am no expert, but i would root the phone using superoneclickroot. then download root explorer. get krylon's final cwm. download the rom (black ice or frost or w/e you prefer), download bali 3.1, the ext4 converter, and maybe a new modem (optional). flash those following the very well written guides by the devs and you should be ok.
everyone here is pretty awesome and we're all willing to help (even me...who barely knows anything).

i would also dl the ext converter and bali 3.1 kernel as well. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1123039) (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1080871). place all of the zip files you download into the root of your sd card....which means that if you connect your phone to the computer and open it using windows explorer, it is that first window, which lists all of the folders. dont put these files in folders or anything.
once that is done, i restarted my phone in recovery shutting down fully and pressing the power+volume up+volume down. once there, i went to reinstall packages to get into cwm.
then when this loads, i wiped the system/factory reset and wiped the cache. then i went to mounts and storage and mounted my system. (the final mounting output should be: unmount, mount, mount, unmount). i then scrolled to "go back"
i choose install zip file from sd card. choose zip file, which should be the second option if my memory serves me right. scroll of ext converter and install that one. then when that is done, go back to install file from sd card, choose black ice or frost (i LOVE frost) and install that one. then when that is done, i flash my bali 3.1 uv kernel. when that is flashed, i click go back and choose reboot system. once that is done, you will see the galaxy s screen for like 5 min or so followed by the team whiskey logo. once you see this, it will take another minute or so to load up. once you see that the rom loads up...LET THE PHONE SIT FOR 10 minutes. i know it seems long, but just let it sit.
after 10 min or so, i would go into your about phone options and check and see that you have bali3.1 and that the rom is correct.

LOL! that was more of a joke. the real credit goes to people like krylon and team whiskey, drhonk, dsexton, chadster, mad, raver, etc. they really made all this possible.
let us know how it goes. you can honestly flash all of this within 5 min (not including wait times to build the cache). once you get it down, you should check out some other posts because people are always coming up with creative tweaks to make things better.

Hi, i am very new and a noob at this site and rooting in general. Hear me out. Im stuck on getting the recovery on the phone. ADB push? Root explorer? I cannot find /system/bin.. PLz walk me tru.

If you rooted your phone, download root explorer from the market. then follow the guides I listed in the post. If you read through the threads, everything has already been asked.
Root explorer is a file manager that allows you to see everything. there are other explorers, like super manager, but I like root explorer. To push a file, download it to your computer, move it to your sd card, open root explorer, find the file, long press, click move, and then navigate to the destination folder and paste.
To get into recovery to flash roms, shut the phone off, then press power and the two volume buttons at the same time. You'll get to a screen with blue text. Click reinstall packages and you'll see krylon's cwm. Follow my previous post prior to going into download mode though.

Samsung Galaxy Exhilarate: How to Root it.

ALL:
It has been a long time since I posted to this thread. Back then, the Samsung Exhilarate had just come out, and there was no way to root it. Thanks to several other members, most notably j3r3goss and shabbypenguin, I was able to get root on this phone. As of now, this post is very old. The instructions here, are not needed for you to root your Samsung Exhilarate anymore. You are free to read through them, but you should pay attention to the last page (currently page 3). There, j3r3goss posted a link to the the TWRP or CWM recovery files, that you can now use to get root, without following the step-by-step instructions I posted below. I'm leaving the thread up, but for all intents and purposes, consider it closed.

It has been fun, and I've been using my Exhilarate for nearly two years. Because I've been extremely busy, I haven't had time to keep up with the latest changes - but others have. I hope that you found these instructions useful.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you have UPDATED your phone to ICS, and want to root it, these instructions will work. You will not need to do the last part where you need to update the firmware keys!
Do you plan to update your phone from Gingerbread (Android 2.3) to Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0). Do that first! Otherwise, you'll just have to root again (not that that's a problem, but why???)
I) How to update to ICS:
1) Download Samsung Kies from here: http://www.samsung.com/us/kies/ if you haven't already, and install it, and then run it
2) Put your phone into ODIN (Download mode - see section II below).
3) When Kies detects you phone (your computer will need to install drivers, and then Kies will say it's connecting to your phone, and it will take about 3-4 minutes and finally connect to it), it should let you know that there is an update. Just follow the instructions on Kies and be patient. The phone will update, and once it reboots into normal mode, you'll know it's updated by going to "Settings" and if they are grouped into different sections, then you have ICS. Otherwise, you probably still have GB.
II) How to enter ODIN Mode:
For the Exhilarate I've found it's best to use this sequence:
1) Power phone down
2) Plug the USB cable into your computer (do not plug the phone into the USB cable yet).
3) While pushing and holding both the vol up and vol down buttons, plug the phone into the computer. As soon as you see "SAMSUNG" flash and then dissappear, release the buttons.
4) Phone should boot into ODIN mode.
III) How to Root
What you need:
1) Samsung Galaxy Exhilarate phone (unrooted)
2) microSD Card (any size of 1GB or larger will work)
3) USB cable to connect your phone to your computer
4) Files below
First, download all the files...
1) Download the latest version of ODIN here: ODIN.
2) Download the drivers here: Samsung Galaxy Drivers and run the setup program after unzipping.
3) Download the tar file here: www.Shabbypenguin.com/OUDstuff/Blaze4G/Clockworkmod-Blaze-4G.tar Don't mess with it, just download it somewhere where you can find it later
4) Download SuperUser here: SuperUser Save it somewhere where you can find it later.
Second, conduct the root:
1) Put your phone into Odin (Download mode - see Section II above).
2) With phone in ODIN mode, run Odin.1.85.exe (it's in the folder where you unzipped ODIN too).
3) Odin will launch on your computer. It should show, in the first box under ID:COM, a port in yellow. Mine was Port 5. This means you have successfully connected to your phone.
4) Click the button in ODIN labeled "PDA", and then browse to the .tar file you downloaded above and then select "Open". The file will show up next to the PDA button.
5) Make sure that "Re-Partition" is NOT checked!;
6) Click "Start" and wait till your phone reboots. It should reboot into normal mode. If it doesn't, just power down and reboot into normal mode.
7) Copy the SuperUser.zip file you downloaded above to your phones microSD card.
8) Reboot the phone into recovery mode: While pushing and holding both the vol up and vol down buttons, push the power button. As soon as you see "SAMSUNG" flash, release the buttons. You shouldn't need to have the phone connected to the computer this time. The phone will boot into CWM recovery.
9) using either: the "menu" button to move down and the "home" button to move your selection up; or alternately the volume down button to move down, and the volume up button to move up: highlight "install zip from sdcard". Use the "search" button or power button to select/enter.
10) highlight "choose zip from sdcard" and press the "seach" button to select it.
11) browse to the directory which you copied SuperUser to and select it.
12) scroll down to "Yes - Install Superuser" and select it.
13) Once done, reboot your phone into normal operating mode.
14) If rooting Gingerbread, see Section IV below.
15) If rooting either Gingerbread or ICS, see section V below.
16) If having issues with Root, see section VI below.
IV) Rooting Gingerbread?:
Last: Finish up (Steps 1-4 are ONLY needed if you are still using GingerBread and not Ice Cream Sandwich):
NOTE: Your buttons (the four at the bottom) WILL NOT work at this point. You need to do the following:

1) Push your phone dialer as if you were going to make a call.
2) Dial *#*#2663#*#*.
3) You will see the attached thumbnail below on your phone (stolen from j3r3goss).
4) press the bottom button that says "Touch key FW update". Wait. Once it's finished, your bottom row of buttons will work again!
Note: If you are on GB, and not ICS, every time you boot into recovery and then back into operational mode, you will need to do the four steps in this section above!
======
V) Using either GB or ICS:
You do need to do these last steps (I believe):
5) ADDENDUM/UPDATE: At this point, there is one last thing you need to do!: You must go to "Settings/Applications/Development" and Enable USB Debugging! If you don't do this, you will NOT be able to get root access! Also, if for any reason you turn off USB Debugging, make sure you turn it back on! If you lose root access, check this FIRST! If you still can't get root access, boot into recovery mode and wipe the Dalvik Cache, the regular Cache, and "Fix Permissions". Then double check to make sure USB Debugging is ENABLED!
6) You're done! Your phone is now rooted and you can do whatever you want! :highfive:
VI) TROUBLESHOOTING:
If you run into problems
1) Check to make sure that SuperUser is installed on your phone. Check the apps section first, and then, use RootExplorer and check the System/bin folder. If you see SuperUser is in the system/bin folder, then you are very close to being rooted.
If it is not installed:
a) make sure that you copied the superuser.zip file to the EXTERNAL sdcard.
i) Boot the phone up normally
ii) plug the phone into your computer, pull the notification bar down, select USB connection, and tap the "Connect USB storage" button.
iii) Using Winbloze explorer, copy the SuperUser.zip to the external sdCard (on my computer, it is drive F:, and the Internal is drive G.
iv) disconnect once the copy is finished and use any file explorer on your phone to check the contents of the external sdCard (look in the "sdcard/external_sd" folder)
v) if it's not there, then you are doing something wrong. If it is there, shut down the phone, and boot into CWM recovery.
vi) Use CWM recovery to install the superuser.zip file on your phone.
vii) reboot into normal mode
viii) check to make sure that you have enabled USB Debugging
viii) check again to see if SuperUser is now in your apps, and in the system/bin folder.
ix) Run SuperUser 1x, and then close it out.
x) Run ANY app that requires Root Permissions. You should get a request from SuperUser to "Allow" or "Deny" the app root access. Make sure you allow root access. If you make a mistake, you'll need to launch superuser again and completely remove the app from the denied list.
2) Make sure USB Debugging is enabled.
3) if you still can't get root, boot into CWM Recovery, and try clearing the cache and the Dalvik cache, and resetting permissions, then reboot and check everything again. You may need to do this last step several times.
Beyond that, I don't know what else might be causing you to not gain root access, so keep trying.

Thanks for the write-up Black-wolf.
I wasn't aware that the touch key fw needed to be updated each time after booting recovery,hopefully that is something that will be fixed when Shabbypenguin gets his hands on the stock recovery.
Personally I find the easiest, works every time method to get into Download mode is to have the usb cable plugged into the pc, then while holding the volume up/down buttons, plug the cable into the phone, continue holding vol up/down buttons until download mode boots.

Yeah, I figured that out when I went to boot recovery to check something, and then came out of it and the keys weren't working again... :/ At least there's a work around. I suspect, that this is something that an automated app could handle if Shabby or someone else doesn't come up with a permanent fix.

Any update on getting the stock recovery? I blew through rooting my Exhilarate before I noticed the request for help or I would have offered.
The root seems to be working OK for me. JuiceDefender is working great with it to throttle the CPU clock speeds and has really improved my battery life. Also worked OK in blocking all the bloatware apps with the Gemini App Manager. So I don't really have a reason to unroot and go back to stock firmware, but it would be nice to have the option available should I ever hit a problem.

Dream_Killer: No, we have not gotten a stock recovery. I've had several inquiries into it, but so far as I know, Shabby has not been able to help out in this regard. I am willing to try myself, but I'll need an un-rooted (and it must never have been rooted) phone.

To get into stock recovery you...
1. open a command terminal on your computer.
2. type cd (where ever you have your ADB located on your computer) for example my is located in desktop/platform-tools so the command would be "cd desktop/platform-tools"
3. type "adb"
4. type "adb reboot recovery"
Presto you are in stock recovery.

We know how to boot into the stock recovery. What we need is to pull the stock recovery image off of the phone so that we can restore the phone to stock.
Btw.. pressing both volume keys while turning on the phone will get you there also.

I rooted the exhilarate. Loaded the t mobile blaze cm7 rom. And all works like a charm. The only thing is you can't make a call. You can,you just can't hear. I called my other phone and it went through. The speaker doesn't work. Mms and all works. Just not the speaker...... why? This wud. Be a awsome rom for this phone.. think we can find a fix?

I'm not exactly sure but it might be just as simple as replacing the audio libs on the blaze rom with the ones from the exhilarate. I'm not sure which files though.
I'm curious if by coming together (blaze and exhilarate users) if there would be enough interest to get official cm support. if the only major diff is audio they could basically support 2 devices for the price of one.

If i knew/or had the kno how,shoot id do it. Is there a program u need to change the libs?. This is a pretty sweet device.

i think you just need root explorer, and copy the new ones over the old ones. I'll look to see if i can find out which files need swapped. Should be able to make a zip to flash through CWM recovery.

Man,im good at alotta things,buildin houses,workin on diesels,and flashin roms to my s3 and note,what i cant figure out is building roms. Im sure gettin this speaker workin has somthin 2 do with dismantling blaze cm7 rom and find the fix.

All: rodracruz found a thread for enabling NFC on AT&T phones. Apparently, the Samsung Exhilarate does have NFC - but why the hell AT&T has it disabled, I have not idea... I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have anything to do with the audio lib files. More so most likely a kernel, modem, or APN problem.
Edit: not to mention the build.prop is completely written for the blaze. I'm working on some things. I'll let you guys know tonight. I wish there was source for this damn phone.
