[Q] error message with clockworkmod and 3e recovery install - Samsung Infuse 4G

so i poked around on the infuse 4g forums, and didn't find much relating to clockworkmod, sooo i apologize if this is repeating another thread
i have a few questions about a rooted samsung infuse 4g on at&t. i am very new to this. my phone had been having random shutdown issues, and was reverting app settings to the initial settings. i'm hoping a root can help with this.
i installed clockworkmod recovery on the device (which requires 3e recovery as well).
after placing the files in the directed spots, and while booting into recovery and selecting "reinstall packages", i got the error message "E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted." for both recovery installs.
both were in the proper place and all, i'd triple checked everything. i attempted to "backup current rom" using rom manager and got the same message. the backup file was never created.
2nd question:
if i can't fix this, would it be a bad idea to forget it and flash a rom via odin instead? i assume (optimistically) that the problem is with the install and not the phone itself.
3rd question:
i've backed up all apps and info with titanium backup, do i need to backup my current rom? (firmware version 2.2.1 kernel version 2.6.32.9 no custom rom or anything, just rooted)

Did you install 3e or clockwork recovery first? I he the same happen to me because I flashed clockwork from rom manager before I got 3e recovery taken care of. If so, uninstall rom manager, install it again and flash clockwork recovery. It worked for me.
Sent from my Infuse 4g running MIUI v1.12.23

I installed clockwork first, assumed it didn't matter >,< do i need to remove 3e as well and start totally over? thanks so much! i figured it was something simple like that. I'll try it out
I just did that and attempted a backup, same error message as before ):

1. You might not want to back up anything with cwm. At least, I don't. Bad things happen when you try to restore them.
Rooting won't make a difference.
Back up your contacts and your apps only.
2. you can flash with odin or heimdall. if you go odin, use h8rift's.
3. just back up the apps. no need for froyo 2.2.1. gtg's and h8rift already created the orignal image

Great, then that's taken care of. Let me see if I'm understanding correctly; if I ever need to unroot, the stock rom will be available with h8rift? Therefore, no need to backup the current rom.
2. I will try that. Do you have a preference between odin and heimdall?
Before flashing and whatnot, would it be a good idea to uninstall 3e recovery, cwm recovery, or rom manager? or all 3? If I should uninstall rom manager, would a replacement app be useful and which one?

Read my post ...top to bottom.

got it. thanks

just rebooted into recovery using rom manager. i am still getting the same error message. how can i fix this? i did not see a solution in your article, nor did i see one in the forums for the infuse 4g.

Download sgs kernel flasher and flash entropys daily driver with it. There are multiple other threads with this problem resolved. Most of the old methods dont work if you just got your infuse and it came with 2.3.6 on it, but from what I've read(yes, even though I don't have the problem I found how to resolve it) the sgs kernel flasher is the way to go.
I would help more, but if you can't read enough to figure out the process, then maybe you shouldn't. Sorry, I'm just a bit bugged by this being reposted in more than 5 new threads very recently. I'm not trying to be a ****, but everybody just needs to take it slow and read. Most problems have been solved for the most part.

turned out to be an easy fix, no extra downloads necessary. uninstalled 3e and cwm and reinstalled. everything is up and running well. thanks for the help

How to install Nandroid on Captivate

Can someone direct me to a "how to" install nandroid for the captivate... I downloaded it, but it was on a thread for the G1, so I'm not sure if the procedure is the same for the captivate.
Thanks!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
You need to get clockworkmanager, nandroid is the name for backing up your phone and being able to install that backup. Make sure you check the dev section and read up on the thread for clockworkmanager. You will need to be rooted with busybox and superuser access.
Easyist way is find the one click root on here then root your phone. Then get rom manager off the market and then install it and that will allow you to install clockwork then use rom manager to reboot into recovery then select backup and off you go.
I can tell you its a blessing to have that. Was messing around with trying to get froyo rom on and I had major issues so I just said screw it and restored to jh2 then rooted rom manager then clockwork then nandroid backup was back to my stuff in 10 mins.
Oh and its way worth buying rom manager for the little they charge. Its a great program
Cool, thanks for spelling this out for me... From what I have read before I try anything I need to do a nandroid back up incase something goes wrong so this helps a lot.
Thanks again!

Glad to finally understand what a freakin nandroid is lol...I have been doing it without knowing that was it!
I'm confused...
My captivate is rooted, and I installed ROM manager, but when I get into recovery, there is no option for backup. Any ideas?

reboot into recovery and select reinstall packages
if it reboots back to the recovery screen again, select reinstall packages again. this time you should be in the green clockwork mod screen. select nandroid from the menu and then select backup

Any way to do a nandroid backup from the clockwork mod on JI6 (froyo) since the recovery screen won't install the unsigned update.zip that ROM manager uses to enable clockwork mod recovery?

You need to do this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804226 just use the version of Odin that you used to install Froyo. This will enable 2e Recovery needed to run ClockworkMod Recovery.
Thanks for that thread, are there any cons to using that kernel? (reading the thread now)

Yup, it was just as simple as you said, thanks! Just made a nandroid backup. And clockwork mod's recovery is great
Im sorry if this is a dumb question...Im brand new to Android. What is Nandroid Backup?
I rooted and did the clockwork/rom manager download and then did this:
How to Install ClockWork Recovery:
1. On the menu there should be an option labeled “FLASH CLOCKWORK RECOVERY.”
Press it.
2. Once a popup says that it has been succesful press “BACKUP CURRENT ROM”
3. Your phone will now restart and backup your ROM
4. If your phone does not start backing up and instead boots into a blue menu use the volume
keys to select reboot now and then press the power button. Try to do all the steps again.
5. Wait for it to finish and then it should restart.
Is this different from a Nandroid backup?
Clockwork, nandroid, both refer to rom manager utilities. Clockwork is the recovery function and nandroid the backup utility.
But you need to select reinstall packages at screen with blue text. Clockwork/nandroid will have green text menu.
Swyped.....you may have to interpret
But im doing both the Clockwork/Nandroid with the Rom manager app correct? I did the reinstall packages and then it showed code scrolling and a status bar that took a minute or two... Is that what you mean? Did I do it right?
Yep....that is a nandroid backup
Swyped.....you may have to interpret
a issue no one else seems to have
Hey,
I just rooted my phone a few days ago so i could install the lag fix on my captivate. Got it done and it runs great now. I started looking around at these custom ROMs and i'm interested in trying one out, but not with out backing up my stock/rooted rom first in case i screw something up. Here is the prob that i'm having.
I installed Clockwork Rom manager NP. Got Busy box installed already too. I opened up rom manager and hit back/recover and it asked me my phone type. I told it the captivate. It downloaded recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.2-captivate.zip into a recoveries directory. Next i clicked on the fix permissions and let it do its thing. Now i clicked on backup current ROM clicked ok for the default name. Phone reboots into recover mode and pops up with.
update media, finished
--install from package....
Finding update package...
opening update package...
E:can't open /cache/update.zip
(bad)
Installation aborted.
I hit reinstall packages and it gives me the same error.
The only thing that i have try was renaming the recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.2-captivate.zip to update.zip and dropping it in the main directory but it had the same effect.
Thanks in advance for the help.
Get and update.
I re-dropped the recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.2-captivate.zip as update.zip in the main dir. and hit backup current mod.
I clicked reinstall packages and it went into the manual mode, hit reinstall pages again and it has seemed to work.
I will give and update if it does not. Thanks again.
Guys,
One thing I am not sure of. I got a brand new Captivate with Stock JF6. I have another one running Froyo.
If I take backup of current new phone via CWM (nandroid) and restore it on the other one.
Is there any trouble expected ???
One I know that files in /efs may get screwed up as it has IMEI related entries too ... but I am not sure.
I am listening.

Put this on your internal SD card along with your ROM of choice. Reboot in to recovery and install packages 2 times. The second time it will be in clockwork recovery and you can flash your ROM.
I just had the same problem after doing countless ROM flashes in the past. Perhaps its something in their server preventing the download of CWM? Anyways, thanks for the .zip. Worked like a charm!
yes thank you very much for that zip u saved my life well appreciated
Keep that .zip on your HDD and you can bypass Rom Manager (and all the associated problems) altogether.
I have my phone rooted and unlocked. It's the AT&T Captivate but I'm using it on T-Mobile. I've had no problems so far with it.
I downloaded Clockwork's Rom Manager (v3.0.0.7) and tried to Flash ClockworkMod Recovery to begin experimenting with ROMs.
When I click on that it tells me "An error occurred while downloading your recovery."
I have over 4 gigs of memory left and I have 3 bars on 3g and WiFi going. No internet connection problems (i checked the net using market and using the browser, it works fine.)
What else could be causing the problems.
I'm just wanting to get a good stable rom going which ditches all the junk AT&T put on the phone.

if the update.zip is already on your /sdcard/ then there is no reason to try and download/flash clockwork recovery.....thats what the update.zip IS
thats what i thuoght but not true. even goin in normal recovery and selecting to install packages gets a error some about no such directory or something even though updat.zip is there even fix permissions gives a error
I'm having the exact same problem. After reading the development section I have decided to flash a custom rom from my stock rom. Installed "Rom manger" from market, then tried to run the "recovery" got the same error msg. Also uploaded the update.zip to my /sdcard the I got the below errors:

Did you flash back to stock JF6 first not JI6?
try this cuz this is what i did and the update.zip worked just fine for me
1. one click back to stock jf6
2. master clear
3. root with galaxy s one click root
(after the root there should be an update.zip in your sdcard)
4. replace the update.zip in the root of your sd card with the one here posted which is the clockwork recovery one and if you want while u do that you can throw in the rom that you want to flash in there as well to kill 2 birds with one stone
(i will re post the update.zip for cwm just in case)
5. power off the phone and boot into stock recovery and hit reinstall packages two times
6. you should now be in clockwork mod recovery and can now flash the rom of your choice
this is what i did and everything went smoothly but this is just me if this helps someone else plz let me know if this works for you
p.s. i will make a video if needed just ask
Try This
After flashing back to stock do a master clear from Odin3
Put update.zip onto internal sd
Boot into recovery
Reinstall packages
After boot enable USB debugging and mock locations
Get Rom Manager from market
Start Rom Manager
Flash ClockworkMod Recovery
Flash away

You guys are making it harder then necessary, the update zip I posted is the clockwork recovery MOD, just flash stock, reboot into recovery and reinstall packages 2 times and you will be in the green clockwork recovery then you can install zip from sd and choose your ROM you placed on your internal sd card. No need to root every again as long as you keep this update zip handy.
I too am having problems with Rom Manager. I just wanted to change modems. No go. So I used the power button to go into Recovery mode, picked the modem file, flashed it then told the menu to reboot system.

Can't install any custom roms any longer

I am lost.
I had FireFly 2.05 on my SGS (ATT US version) and was going to update to 2.1. I followed the procedure as I aways do; ODIN 1 click to stock rom, master clear, copy update.zip and rom file and reboot into recovery. This time however I get the following error
E:Can't symlink /system/xbin/su SYSTEM:bin/su
E:Failure at line 14
I checked some notes on this and found out that it might be a currupt file. So I re-downloaded FireFly2.1 again and transfered the file to the internal SD card. The outcome was the same.
Then I copied the original 2.05 version back which I know was fine and I still get the same error. Even after a full stock 1-click and master clear the above error will not go away.
Is my internal SD card messed up? Or am I missing something else?
It's running stock right now and all seems to work fine, but I cannot stand all the bloatware and other crap ATT puts on the phone and really want to try FireFly2.1.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

You do not need to root on stock just flash clockwork with update zip
The update.zip i use is the current clockwork recovery.
I boot into the stock e2 recovery, then apply cw recovery and update the rom. Never had to root stock before when i update via cw recovery.
I will try to root stock first this time and then apply rom via recovery.

To install clockwork select reinstall packages twice
The issue is not with cw recovery. I am already in it, but the error that i get is after i click "yes apply this zip"... The script starts to format the system, data, datadata, etc. And then this error shows up after files ate copied

Done that too.
So just to reiterate...
I had FireFly2.05 running and many other cooked Android 2.1 and 2.2 roms before this. I follow the instrution of the cooks to the 't' on how to update to the newest rom and never had any issue.
This time I downloaded FireFly2.1 and also Phoenix4.5 from the respective cooks and followed the instructions as usual. The issues does not show up until the 'copy files' part of the script is running (formating of the filesystem already passed).
All I can imagine are these:
1) The transfer from the PC to the Phone is corrupt (ruled out the download from the net as even the existing FireFly2.05 rom no longer loads)
2) The internal SD card is messes up
3) There is some configuration change I am not aware off that prevents the install of the cooked rom.
Maybe try to reformat sd through clockwork
Problem solved, kind of.
My desktop PC, which I always use to transfer the files is somehow responsible for the error I get in CWM recovery. I ended up using my laptop to transfer the ROM to the phone and it worked again.
Something is messing up the USB transfer? That seems very odd but I am glad it's not the phone that caused the issue.
If I find out what the issue is with my Desktop I will post again just in case this rather rare issue might happen to someone else.

I don't think he's getting into Clockwork via ROM Manager, as he's said multiple times he's using the CWM update.zip; reinstalling packages in 2e recovery to get to CWM.
He's also said he doesn't believe this to be an issue with Clockwork (and I don't either). And I'm also pretty sure we're not dealing with newbie mistakes of Android Recovery vs. Clockwork Recovery.
any chance you're leaving your usb plugged into your cappy while you're trying to flash it?

Cant update ROM. What am I doing wrong

I have a NS unlocked and rooted. I have ROM Manager, busybox etc. I followed all the instructions but I can't update ROMs or the 2.3.3 update or CM7 nothing. Each time it starts to unpack or whatever it gets about 1/3 the way and aborts. Something about verifying signatures or something.
Very frustrating.

What version Clockwork Recovery are you using? Try reverting back to a older version or something.
Verify the ROM's MD5 Hash using HashTab (Google it)
I've tried several times with downloads and now the latest clockwork and the version prior.
Samething always aborts, can't verify signature. Tried manual and through rom manager.
When using rom manager is that suppose to do the whole install? Cuz that only gets me to the little droid and the triangle. I have to get myself into bootloader and continue manually from there.
Thanks

Hmm... It sounds like clockwork isn't properly installed. ROM Manager should take you directly to clockwork recovery without you having to do anything.
the problem you are facing is that you are still on stock rom. so even if you flash clockwork recovery and then reboot to recovery, you'll always end up going to the stock recovery. this is a new feature implemented by google.
what you should do is...
1) go to bootloader
2)flash the clockwork recovery using fastboot
3)DO NOT reboot the phone or quit bootloader. immediately after flashing the rec. using fastboot, just enter recovery (through bootloader)
4)flash you new rom
just for u to have an idea. the recovery should be orange in colour.
option 2.
you also have the option of using a file manager with moun/root functions such as root explorer and rename the recovery script in etc folder but i guess step 1 is much easier for now.
OK I played alot today and this is what happened.
After fixing permissions and flashing the new CWM and wiping data/cache it finally worked. Unfortunately titanium and my backup didnt bring everything over. So I went back and forth between stock and CM7 several times but I just couldnt get all my stuff back in CM7. So I thought Id try the 2.3.3 update but not wiping stuff. That didnt work. Then I tried one more time with CM7 but not wiping. I couldnt get pastthe little CM7 droid on the skateboard. So went back to stock for now. Ill have more time on Sat to give things another try.
At least I can get in it now.
Any ideas/thoughts/
Thanks and sorry for the long post.

The old 3e update method that worked for Froyo doesn't work on UCLB3 Gingerbread.
To do what you want to do, you'll need to flash a custom kernel with CWM recovery already included, or use the third package listed in step 1.) at this link.:

thats what im using? just wiped and tried again.. but its still taking me to android system recovery <3e>?
how can that be possible if i odined a package that has cwm?
doesnt make sense?
