Hey guys, I'm getting a new phone this January 11. Should I wait for the Galaxy Nexus, or get the HTC EVO 3D, I've always liked Sense, and I don't want that to change, but I also like a nice screen on my phone. Not sure what to do . Suggestions are appreciated.
My personal choice would be The Galaxy Nexus.
Major reasoning behind this: LTE Service (most likely).
With WiMax being halfway abandoned this will future-proof you with getting the Nexus.
Also the Nexus has 4.0 out of the box, HD 4.65 in screen, and all those specs im sure you know about.
But the only reason id stick with getting the 3D is if you need a new phone now, or if you REALLY need Sense.

No price or date has been set for sprint to get it but sprint has confirmed and has picture of it. Android Central had an article on it and with CES starting today i'm sure more information will come out about it in the next couple of days

Why do you keep telling people that the shift will turn LTE? LTE requires special hardware in the device. The evo shift is a great device and has a lot of development support. Sprint has already told me personally that will will keep wimax for the devices that need it...There is no devices that have LTE for sprint yet.

I think you might have read his post wrong. When he stated about LTE he was talking about his first sentence about the Nexus
I think I will just wait. My phone is like my wallet, I wont trade it for anything no matter what, after a while you grow fond of it. I was only tired of slow development. But so what we have what everyone else has, just not ****load of variety.
Aw ok, well from what Sprint told me, don't hold me to it lol, LTE was in discussion at the moment and they said it could take quite a long time to get it rolling out on any types of devices. So I wouldn't bet that any of the new phones will get it quite yet. Guess we'll just have to wait and see

Wait for the Evo Shift 2 or something similar. If you are as dependent on a hardware keyboard as I am you will hate both phones.

I will be buying the atrix off contract at release been saving my pennies for a while and now I have something to want.
Atrix seems great, but it could take a while to root. Every carrier and manufacturer has their problems IMO.
The Atrix does seem good, but i want to see a nice HTC device on AT&T. I've heard we might be getting the Desire HD.

as much as the captivate sucks. we are still like the nexus s which means we might get a fully working cm7 sense the software is so bad.

I love every htc ive had, just the inspire, spec wise doesn't seem to be much better then mine now. Think I prefer hummingbird with it's gaming support over snapdragon. I would give it a few months to see if the Atrix has any issues and how easy it is to root/put custom roms on.
I mean look at the Captivate, aside from some phones having GPS problems and small issues it really is a great phone.
And if ya look at the Atrix, hell the CPU might just break once maximized to the full potential. You NEVER know!

I can guarantee that the Rep doesn't have access to that information. At&t gives reps very limited info on future releases. Besides they're always testing new devices and they're deffinitely keeping an eye on the competition. With that said, if a manufacturer plans on launching a device that Att wants they will do everything they can to add it to their lineup.

Why is AT&T rolling out so many 4g units? Isn't their 4g network still about two years away? If so, these units will be obsolete before you can take full advantage of their capabilities.
T-Mobile to Launch Nexus S clone with TouchWiz - Vibrant 4G
EDIT: Probably a fake picture.
Vibrant 4G looks to be a complete clone of the Nexus S, plus these four things:
http://briefmobile.com/vibrant-4g-front-camera-android-2-3-gingerbread
Vibrant look
4G HSPA+
microSD
Android 2.3 with TouchWiz
Doesn't this feel kind of screwy? At least Nexus S users will have NFC, constant updates straight from Google, and a bare skinned Android 2.3 build. Plus the contour screen.

Yep.
The picture is fake, but about the final product having 2.3 is up in the air. So many damn Samsung rumors ruin the actual release of the phone. Plus, I doubt 2.3 is on the phone.
It takes Samsung approximately 3 months (assuming the rumored release date is right) to make 2.3 while it takes them about 5-6 months to release 2.2 on Galaxy S (original). Yeah, I don't believe it. Also, why have a USA phone get 2.3 before the motherland? I believe Korea got Froyo before everyone else and then after them it was the international Galaxy S.
Of course, I could just be wrong.

First time I've seen Vibrant 4G vs. Nexus S.. but yeah there are a lot of "should i get Nexus S" threads.
I'm just gonna go ahead and say:
What kind of user are you?
1) Do you care about the latest hardware?
In this case.. I WOULD not get either phones and wait for a Dual core. As great as this sounds, there are consequences for this [refer to (2)]
2) Does it bother you not having the newest and latest version of Android?
This is the main reason why I moved from the Vibrant to the Nexus S and will be only making purchases towards Nexus devices in terms of contracts.
With a Nexus device, you are guaranteed updates coming directly from Google itself. Google will open source kernels, drivers, and whatever is necessary for devs. I dont do OTAs but it does help the community out by always having the newest and latest.
In my opinion, latest software > hardware because the latest hardware phones are crippled by custom skins (motoblur, htc sense, etc). Although, I DO like the features TouchWiz brought to the game (power widget on notification bar, video codecs, etc) but the lack of software updates is disgusting including the closed source of the leaks which limited development.
Not to mention, winning the "latest software" war is far more easier than latest hardware. Newer hardware is coming so fast that you can't catch up. For example, Tegra 2 is now starting to release on various phones. But media reports that Tegra 3 will be ready soon... so, whats the point in getting a 1st-gen dual core? Just wait for a 2nd-gen. Sources can be googled regarding this.
3) Vibrant 4G is pretty much a Vibrant, you can add a FFC camera to your Vibrant and it already has Froyo.. so..... and HSPA+ speeds of 21 Mbps is just theoretical, it doesn't necessarily mean you'll hit it. Also, why would you need that high of Mbps? Not that im complaining, but really... we're not downloading torrents or anything here so whats the point? I'll live with my 7.2 Mbps.. not in a rush for higher speeds.
Edit: Sources --

ARM provided a window into the future of smartphones tonight when they announced the Cortex-A15 MPCore processor. The new design will be used in 32nm and 28nm chips with 1-16 cores, with clock speeds up to 2.5GHz.
Before you get too excited, ARM does not expect these processors to arrive in phones until late 2012. By the time they are available, ARM says to expect five times the performance of the Cortex-A8 CPUs that we find in most current smartphones, at a similar energy footprint.

Nexus S 4G is a rumor. The I 9023 (or whatever its going to be called) is possibly just a Nexus S that uses the Super Clear LCD screen rather than Super AMOLED due to shortage(?). And besides, Google owns the name "Nexus," so I seriously doubt Google would do that to their customers.
I don't even get what the hype about Vibrant 4G is.. its a FFC and Froyo. You can apply a FFC to your Vibrant and you already have Froyo.
But... have fun with Samsung's updates if you decide to get a Vibrant 4G
Nexus S is out of Samsung's hands to update.
@Slowz3r: The Vibrant 4G picture is a fake. It's a Vibrant with FFC and Nero v5.1 (or v4?). Status bar has AM/PM, stock Gingerbread does not.

But I do use my phone more for movies, music, and internet than anything else.

Well, if they are planning on being AT&T in a year or so, with 1.2ghz dual core (htc sensation specs and evo 3d specs) being "rare" in like 3 months....
That gives like 9 months to announce a new phone. My guess is it will come 3 months after the Sensation 4G to allow that to be king. Then, an identical Sensation 4G with a different form factor, espresso, a keyboard, and the smaller screen will be announced as the MyTouch 4G Slide.
My guess is it will come around... October or November, which will be about a year after the MT4G was released, so that could mark its "end of marketing life".
I'm still hoping/doubtful this merger will go thru..

Let me put it into terms that you Swype-users can understand....
"I cannot waitress for the mythology 4g sliders!!!"
Plus, let me know when you can Swype without looking as successfully as one can TYPE.

This thread is hilarious in that almost all the stereotypes thrown out are in some degree true.
I loved my G1 and still miss it sometimes, but swype and thinness come over a physical keyboard. Once all those features get together we'll have a new "Superphone."

Yeah, for some reason keyboards can't be made thin enough currently. You'd think that would come down a bit more than it has over the years.
Also, I like how people say thinness is better because it fits in their pockets better, then later they complain about dropping their phone in the toilet and having to get a new one.
I'm not sure why people want to carry their phone in their pants pockets either. I've cut down on the **** in my pockets over the years (from 2 sets of keys to 1 and also to the world's thinnest wallet) and it feels absolutely wonderful having less in there. I'd rather wear mine on my belt or in a coat pocket.
Don't you guys think we should wait to see if AT&T will in fact be buying T-Mobile before buying new phones? I don't plan on getting a new phone until this blows over. If T-Mobile remains T-Mobile here in the US, I'll get a new phone.

They are pretty much releasing each phone with penta-band capabilities, meaning that they will work on AT&T's network anyway.
Plus, AT&T thinks that they will close the deal in a year. The FCC and US Congress think otherwise (and I support them).
And even if it's a year, by the time the networks are phased out, it will be time for a new phone.

I'm not concerned about the network thing. If the deal goes through, I'm switching carriers... Must be crazy to thing I'll do business with AT&T.
Is there any way possible to get this working on our phones?! It says it will work for the galaxy s and nexus s. Maybe someone could tweak it? http://www.redmondpie.com/install-c...-ics-on-nexus-s-and-galaxy-s-how-to-tutorial/

No it will not its for the origional galaxy s. And yeah someone could make a hackjob to get it to work on our phone. But it would take a heck of alot of work. And we do not even have cm support. So even cm7 working 100percent isnt near....the cm7 people are using is a port to the tmobile galaxy s2 and they dont even have cm support
I'll be getting my Skyrocket this week and lack of dev support keeps making me think twice about the purchase. Maybe it would be better if I just get SGS II instead
Geez ppl relax ..... this phone is very new.... give it some time. The gs2 took some time to get much dev support also. Everyone does not seem to understand that. Think about it.

My comcast home internet speed is. 18mbps download i got 60mbps download today on my skyrocket. See attached picture. And the rocket is pleanty fast trust me you will not be dissapointed. Amazing speed. That's how much I get on my Comcast home connection . But what's the use of this speed when I'm reading more and more complains about AT&T throttling data/speed ?
It depends on how much u use. I use my wifi at home. But i do use alot of data when im not home. And if you have a 5gb plan they wont throttle you until your close to the 5 gigs which is pleanty for a month
I am thinking and correct me if I am wrong.
For the most part it is a resource issue yes it be nice to have Cynogenmod fully support Galaxy S II Skyrocket/LTE but there are only so many programmers. They have to look at how many devices there are out in field.
I hope the numbers in time do justify Cynogenmod support

IMHO
If it wasn't for LTE, I'd be back to GS2 right away.

If you are going to get that from AT&T, good luck... Black Friday pretty much wiped them out, and , from what I was told at the corp store in dallas, the skyrocket is meant to REPLACE the SGS2 - There were none on the shelves, and, they didn't even have a display model in the store of the older unit..

I already have both coming from Amazon. Its just a matter of deciding which one to keep
anyone hear anything, there were a few rumors several months back, but the shift has to be going EOL. My theory is with Sprint not to happy with WiMaxx they arnt releasing many new android phones. Photon was the last flagship to my knowledge... Im really likeing the droid4, just throw sense on it and im happy i know that last statement just made a few ppl die inside lol.
The shift is eol and I haven't heard anything resembling a shift is in the works... Pisses me off...

Hell yes it pisses me off . IDK WTF they're thinking . Not everyone is content with a Virtual Keyboard. I don't give a rip how big the screen is if your not giving me a real KB. Plus this whole ITurd like thing with the Non-Removable Battery . I mean come on, I can think of several situations where a Batt pull has come in way handy. Not to mention what if you get a bad Battery? What then? Believe me I know plenty of ITurd owners that have had to send they're POS back because of a bad Battery. Give me a real KB, a removable battery, a removable SD Card, at least Duel Cores, and a 4" or better screen. I mean is that so much to ask?
Sprint isn't unhappy with wiax they are upgrading the network to LTE instead. Why would they release new phones now with old technology (aka wimax)? Sprint is having an event with HTC on April 4: http://www.androidcentral.com/sprint-and-htc-getting-together-april-4-0
Maybe they will surprise all of us and announce a slider phone to go along with the expected slabs.
that would be fantastic, I guess i could live without sense, meaning a non htc phone, but I would much prefer it, altho the droid4 is quite the sexy beast. I just think the sense4 looks damn sexy as well.

That's an old article and has already been nulled... 4G has been a failure, whether wimax or lte, in my eyes its a failure... Everytime sprint has a new plan to start or expand 4G coverage, it not only falls through, but the partner company has gone bankrupt... And since lte 4G has been ruled interruptive to gps signals, that too will phase off into nothing... Sprint should make massive improvements to their 3G network before they start with new technology... Here's a petition to htc to manufacture a new slider... http://www.virtuousrom.com/2012/03/petition-to-htc-to-release-new-device.html?m=1

No, thats not it at all. Its more like this:
Sprint's Azzi: We won't launch more WiMAX devices
http://www.fiercewireless.com/story/sprints-azzi-we-wont-launch-more-wimax-devices/2012-03-29
Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) is gearing up for its mid-year launch of LTE and will no longer introduce new WiMAX devices to its subscribers. Speaking at the Competitive Carriers Global Expo here today, Bob Azzi, senior vice president of networks at Sprint, said that while the company experienced success with its WiMAX handsets, including the HTC Evo, Sprint will not launch any additional WiMAX devices.
