[Q] Clockwork Recovery and 4EXT Mix Up - HTC Sensation

Noticed something strange going on with my recovery.
I recently updated to ICS 4.03 and installed the new firmware package and everything.
Previously on old Gingerbread roms I was using CWM.
Since changing to ICS it seems to have 4EXT recovery.
What I want to know is, is it now safe to delete the Clockwork Recovery folder on my SD Card? Seems i've got clutter and left overs that are no longer needed.
Or does 4EXT hook into CWM somehow?

Hi,
4EXT is the advanced version of CWM.
Do not delete Clockworkmod Folder.
It contains backups, both old and new.
4EXT and CWM are completely interchangeable.
4EXT is great.
Try it,you'll like it.
Great UI.Touch screen

[Q] ClockworkMod Recovery, ROM Manager, and Nandroid confusion

So I'm trying to update my rooted 3.0.1 euro 3G xoom to the 3.2 Hammerhead ROM, and here's something that is really confusing me:
I've installed ROM Manager 4.3.3.0 from the Market. Then I downloaded and flashed ClockworkMod Recovery 3.2.0.0 R4c via this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074979
So far so good: I can boot to recovery and it looks that everything is working nicely... with the exception of the following:
1) Even though I have CWM installed, ROM Manager won't recognize it. It keeps asking to install it. I haven't done that though because I don't want to overwrite the one I flashed... how can I get ROM Manager to recognize CWM? Or, if I install a different CWM version through the ROM Manager interface, will that overwrite the existing install, or even break something?
2) I can't find Nandroid in the recovery menu of 3.2.0.0 R4c. It says that it should be there in the Wiki (http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=How_to_backup_or_recover_via_Nandroid), but no sir. I only have the options Backup and Advanced Backup in recovery; it doesn't say Nandroid anywhere.
The thing is - I made a normal backup and it created a folder with .img files in it, along with a nandroid.md5 file. So is this a full Nandroid backup or not? And should it not be a zip file? Meaning - will I be able to revert to this backup through ROM Manager or CWM later if it's not a zip?
3) Lastly, I want to install the Tiamat 2.1 Hammerhead ROM. solarnz writes in the instructions in step 6 to "install the rom". So do I do that from recovery? Or from ROM Manager? Which brings me back to my first problem, that ROM Manager won't recognize CWM and won't let me install a ROM without it.
Also - can I install the Hammerhead ROM from my rooted 3.0.1 device at all, or should I install 3.1 first?
I know these are a lot of questions all at once, but after hours and hours of searching and reading (and learning a lot!), I still can't figure this part out.
Many thanks to anyone who can help me make sense of this!

Forget about Rom Manager. You have the correct recovery installed and you have made a "nandroid" backup when you used the backup option in CWM recovery 3.2.0.0 R4c. The Rom you want to flash needs to be on your MicroSD card and that needs to be in your Xoom when you boot into recovery. It is from the CWM recovery menu that you will choose to flash the zip file that will install the Rom. You will need to be able to boot into recovery and you can do it by pressing volume up and power to get to dual core screen, then after 3 seconds, press volume down then volume up and you should be in recovery. Or you could download Quick Boot from the market and use its boot into recovery option (that's what I do).
About the version you need to be on to flash Hammerhead...what does it say? I think you may need to be on 3.1 but just read the OP on the Hammerhead thread...it will tell you the requirements.
Good luck!
Thanks a lot for explaining that okantomi, that's very helpful and reassuring!
The only thing I'm left with now is to figure out the version part... the rom OP doesn't say anything about a required version. Here's the thread btw: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1203635
I made my way through the first 18 or so pages of the 434 total pages in that thread, but still couldn't find any info on that. I'll keep looking - not giving up
Quick update... I decided to just go for it. I flashed the 3.2 ROM onto 3.0.1 - it worked perfectly without any hiccups whatsoever. I'm now running Androud 3.2 with 3G and it works beautifully. Can you see that I'm smiling?

[Q] ROM Manager bricking phones...?

Could ROM Manager fake Flash Clockworkmod recovery be responsible for bricking phones on LG update? Let me explain what I mean - Lots of people, like myself, installed ROM Manager and its CWM because we did not know it's not real Flash. Then We switched to "real" CWM. Now the question is when we do normal stock recovery in order to get official GB update, does this CWM of ROM manager still remains in the phone? If so, could it be that it contributed to the troubles updating through LG tool? How can I make sure I removed it from the phone?
Thanks!
Yes. Many people have confirmed that not having the stock recovery on the device is a road to Bricksville. Even though you are fake flashed there is code inserted somewhere to redirect to the fake flash, and the recovery images for flash (normally installed every boot) have been deleted or renamed. You should flash stock recovery with NVFlasher to make sure you are back at a clean stock recovery before using the LG Update tool.
Thanks but what I mean is that AFTER I realized it's fake flash I installed "real" CWM. So when I do stock on this "real", does CWM rom manager still remains in the phone and how can I remove it?
post deleted by poster
so I am a little confused I used CWM to make a backup before I did anything to my phone. And I was already on the 2.3.3 lg update. So if I restore that I should be back to stock and CWM should still be there right? But lets say LG comes out with another update (Doubtful) and I want to use it I should use the NVflash to reture the phone to stock? if I use NVflash will that put me back on froyo 2.2.2 or GB 2.3.3?
Also I used rom manager to make a backup of the rom I was on which was the stock rooted so is that fake or what the hell is fake? is it the first option in rom manager the CWM recovery? is it the same if I use CWM stock recovery? in cwn itself? Oh I am so confused someone help me
ROM Manager cannot flash directly to the phone so it "fake flashes" CWM recovery. It only installs a few files to the system so that when you run recovery the stock recovery runs an "upate" and that launches CWM recovery from your SD card. Just return the phone to GB 2.3.3 stock and be happy with it. If you restore using CWM it will remain there, so you should use NVFlash to restore stock recovery also.

I have BOTH - CWM AND CWM through the ROM Manager. So if use NV Flash to go to stock, is the CWM from ROM manager still in the phone and how can I remove it?
Thanks!
so what I am getting out of this is rom manager is crap and dont use it. If you just use CWM to do your flashing and backups and recoverys you should be ok.

Thanks but my questions are:
1. If I go to stock using NV Flasher, is ROM Manager's CWM still going to be in the phone, since I have BOTH?
2. Can it BRICK my phone if I do the LG update then?
3. How can I make sure I removed BOTH - NV Flash CWM AND ROM Manager CWM?

[Q] how to download 4ext recovery?

Nooby question ik but where can ia ctually get it, ive searched the internet and only found update for it and control. How can i actually dl it straight to my phone -.-
Install the updater (HERE) and with the updater you install ext4 ;-)
If you buy the app from the market, which you don't *have* to do, just run the program and it walks you through the install, and will also let you know when an updated version is out. It's painless.
Since this is a 4ext thread... maybe someone can tell me where 4ext actually stores its backups on the SDcard?
I found my 2 backups that I made using Clockwork and before I installed a new ROM, I made another one using the 4ext Touch Recovery.
Yet, I'm unable to find where that backup is on my SDCard.
Help would be appreciated.

Lol. In the same folder as cwm backups, /sdcard/clockwork/backup
it uses clockwork folders and settings this is why it can run side by side with clockwork

Weird. I've only seen 2 backups there and I was almost 100% certain I made a 3rd one before I flashed the new ROM. Guess I didn't. Thanks though

[Q] Rom flash fail----Help

I have a lg g2x that I previously rooted and installed clockwork mod on. Today I tried to flash the weapon rom and it failed. I followed the directions posted here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1207125
Instructions on flashing
1. Download zip and place on sdcard
2. Reboot into clockwork recovery
3. Perform a factory reset
4. Navigate to mounts and storage and format /system
5. Choose Install zip from sdcard <-----This is where it failed. I got the message installation aborted. Now the phone hangs on the lg start up screen (with the blue bar)
the file on the sd card weapon g2x_30_r1-1022.zip (didn't unzip or edit name)
I have clockwork mod 3.1.0.1 on my phone and can hold the volume down & power to boot to clockwork.
EDIT: what format should the card be formatted ? I pulled it out the phone to add the file so I doubt that's it J/W
I ASSUME I can flash other roms....but I want this one and I got a feeling since I did everything right with this rom others would fail also.
any help is greatly appreciated
you need to update the Clock work mod first of all, and second you messed up by attempting boot a phone that has no rom on it... just redownload the rom and update the CWM to 5.0.2.0
the phone hangs at lg start up screen and doesn't start......how do I update clockwork mod?....so by saying I had no rom on the phone that file (weapon g2x_30_r1-1022.zip) is an update to a rom ?
Can I download another rom to the SD card from a computer and boot from clockwork mod?
I fixed my phone. I downloaded the stock gingerbread LG-P999-V21e file and my phone is up and running with root.
Before I tried to flash my phone I had a stock froyo when I did my nandroid backup with clockwork mod 3.1.0.1
Before I try to flash more roms I will download the newest clockwork mod. Do I have to perform the nandroid backup again? Or is the current backup sufficient ?
EDIT: I just noticed the camera folder (NOT saved to SD) and some ringtones from soundboards are still on my phone...but how? a cache?

delete the last backup and nandroid again. The last backup you did was with another version of the CWM so it won't restore with the new version of CWM that you just updated.

CWM has to be installed using a computer. It can not be flashed using the phone.
Flash your recovery with this:
[RECOVERY][APP] 4-28:One-Click NvFlasher ClockWorkMod Touch 5.8.1.3/5.0.2.0/4.0.1.5
I run the 5.0.2.0 version, it should work just fine for letting you access your external SD.
