[Q] Uninstalled apps folders and other remnants - General Questions and Answers

Hi folks
I hope this isnt too obvious, I have searched for an answer and looked around quite a bit before posting and I think its a new question!
Im fairly new to android, and have a galaxy s2 running cyanogenmod7 and a kindle fire running ICS.
The Galaxy s2 has an SD card, and Ive noticed a lot of folders in there from apps I installed once, had a look, then deleted. An example of this is foursquare - I used to use it a lot with my iphone 4, but havent really enjoyed the android experience and to be honest Im a bit tired of the general experience so I uninstalled.
My question is, what is the best way to remove them? Should I just delete them? How do I know that they are actually not needed - the foursquare example is fairly obvious, but what if it was called something obscure like fsq? How would I know?
On a PC, you can get utilities which scan and advise you whether folders are redundant - is something similar available for Android?
As you can tell, I switch roms etc quite quickly and am likely to carry on doing so until I get the set up that is right - I dont want my filespace filling with rubbish! I know I could do a complete reformat but that seems a drastic step and isnt always possible.

I just asked my self this question the other day, if you delete an app folder and you still have the app instaled the app should automaticaly put its folder back in the SD card, its pretty much automatic. But not all the time, if you erase everything on your SD card and put it back in your phone, your phone will automaticaly put the files in the SD card, so its the same with apps, if the folder is gone then it will put a new one back in it to make it function correctly, I'm not sure about system stuff, I normaly don't touch that stuff like CWM folders

Thanks for this, its useful info. I think Im going to just make backups then delete a few folders at a time. I cant do that much damage, starting from scratch wont take me too long if I completely mess things up!

There is no automatic way to detect which folder on the sdcard (/mnt/sdcard/) belongs to which app.
You will have to google each folder or look into it and hope it will give you a clue to which app it belongs.
If the folder would have been created in /mnt/sdcard/Android/data/packagename...
It would have been automaticly uninstalled.
This problem inspired me to write the App "SD Maid" which helps you clean up the phone. Unfortunately it doesn't delete those folders either, as there is just no safe way to determine to which app it belongs... for now...

installing in the memory card

Hi everybody.
Sorry in advance for the dullness of my question, I'm a complete new user.
I am having troubles because although I set "memory card" everytime I'm installing a software, for some reason it get installed in the phone. If I use pocket mechanics to move the application, it cannot find where the appliation is installed (I get a lot of ????? in the location folder), so it cannot move it either....
Any suggestion??

Welcome,
It depends on the the way the cab is configured. some cabs are configured rather restrictively and will always install to main no matter what you choose. More and more newer cabs are less restrictive, since we now have large SD cards, access to extROM.
Depending on the app, you can try performing the install, then move the files where you wish and update your shortcuts. Some apps do not respond well to this, in which case just undo what you did.
Cheers!
I know this always happens with Google Maps for some reason (maybe because is beta?). If that is the software you're trying to install, just copy the folder to the SD Card and update the shortcut and it should work.

[Q] Disk Usage / Cleanup

Evening all ... still learning my EVO on Sprint and loving it. I am testing some ROM's to see which I like best, and got an out of SD storage error while using the camera. Using DiskUsage tool I noticed the following 2 largest folders;
clockworkmod - 5289MB
backup - 4664MB
So now I know where my space is! I haven't wiped the phone on each rom install (using ROM manager) and did select the backup. My sync cable is at work so I am looking via astro and do see 6 or so backups under the clockwork/backup folder. As I'm typing this, I really am thinking the reply will be 'yes' I will laugh at my stupidity and move along a bit wiser, but I haven't played with restoring as I haven't had the need, but since things are running good using cygan, can I simply pick a few of the older backups and just delete?
Being used to linux, I am not sure if these are flagged somewhere (I will compare to a grub lst file) I just don't want to run into an issue where I need to restore, see 7 but only 1 or 2 backups exist, so will simply removing the folder like 2011-01-03-14.49 remove, give me some space and everything nice and happy again
Thanks
Yea, just remove all the backups you are sure you won't need. I normally only have one back up. Backs ups take up lots of space. I suggest download dropbox app. You can put some of your back ups on there in "the cloud" so it doesn't use up your precious SD card space.
Cool, thanks for the advice (and app suggestion)!

[Q] WHY can't you delete preinstalled apps?

Hi folks,
As you can tell from the title I'm a smartphone noob and didn't realise you couldn't do this (see the amount of people I've spoke to who didn't even notice you can't delete apps that come with the phone! What's with that?).
But as you can see I emphasised the 'why', 'cause I've searched everywhere but can't find a reason as to why. I'd assume it was just so you can't delete bloatware, but even the Nexus that runs on stock Android has the same issue.
Does anyone know why (or guess why) you can't delete preinstalled apps?
Thanks!
If your device is rooted, all you have to do is download Root Explorer from the market and delete the APK files from the system.
They're located in: /system/app/
You have to press "Mount R/W" on the top right of the application before you can read and write. Make sure hit "Mount R/O" in the same spot after you're done editing though. Also, make sure that what you're deleting isn't something you need and you should probably back-up the .APK files to be safe. If you mess up and don't back up, you can still just re-flash or re-download GAPPS without a problem. Have fun .
Thanks
I was thinking about rooting my phone actually, I'll check that out (I'm sooooo going to back up everything lol).
But! The question was WHY you can't delete the preinstalled apps. Does anyone know the reasoning behind it?
You're welcome mate .
Just for safety I suppose. And you should definitely root your phone, it'll open a whole new world for you!

That and basically without rooting your phone it's basically like a comps guest profile. A lot less can mess up if you can't play around with certain files/settings.
Makes sense.
Thanks folks
I am also unhappy that i cannot uninstall apps that came with the phone and i have yet to find a good reason as to why not. most of the apps i want to delete are free on the market, already compatible with my phone and can be deleted or uninstalled without causing any major issues.
tmpchr says "manufacturer /operator agreements..."
ok ill buy that, sounds like a good business opportunity, (i would do it) good advertising, shared/reduced costs...etc. but the end user should still have the option to remove.
I totally agree with you guys, at the very beginning I had so big apps installed on my device (motorola xt720), for instance MotoNav was about 1.5 GB and spoiled my battery life. Luckily I discovered how to root the device and now, using "root uninstaller" that you find in the market, all of them are just a memory
You could also use Titanium Backup to remove programs.

Clean up after multiple restores

I've backed up a few times with My Backup Pro and flashed ROMs, restoring data via the same program. It seems, looking at it now, that I have somehow managed to duplicate my contacts multiple times. I now have a huge number of contacts, many of them identical and I keep getting link suggestions for all of them.
Any ideas how I can clean this mess up? I've searched and found a few related threads in other forums, but none of them were quite this problem and none of them seemed to have any solutions.
It seems I'm also having a similar problem with apps. It looks like my apps that were moved to the SD card originally are still there, but not being seen by the system. My Backup Pro restored all my apps to the phone, and those are the ones it's using. If I move all those apps to the SD card, now I think I'll have two versions of those apps.
Is there any way to run something that can check my phone for these kinds of duplicates and consolidate things a little? I'm getting worried that I'll end up filling my phone up with useless repeats of things until it's just a pile of bloated crap...
I had a similar problem with my google contacts duplicating themselves for some reason. If duplicates are google you can go to google.com/contacts to edit them. There is a "Find Duplicates" button on the right.
I actually just found this as well. I tried it and resynced my google account on the phone and it doesn't seem to have removed them. Is there something I have to do to force the phone to get rid of the duplicates as well?
Not the right place for it, but figured since I have a thread going already I might as well ask here. I'm trying to Fix Permissions in ROM Manager, as I figure those might be pretty messed up after everything as well. But, even though ROM Manager has Root Access, it tells me an error occurred while "trying to run privileged commands." I have the paid version, I'm not sure why this is happening. Thoughts?
EDIT: Didn't want to keep bumping this thing, but I found the app Contact Remover to be a big lifesaver in a few ways. Specifically, I had 75 blank contacts that were just sitting there for some reason. This app allowed me to select multiples and delete them easily, in a way the People app wouldn't! https://market.android.com/details?id=com.octabode.dcfd

This is actually something I've been wondering about myself.
Most of my apps are on my SD, and I'm preparing to flash a new Rom, for the first time ever (aside from the rooting process, that is).
Seems I recall something similar occurring post-root, with apps I had on prior.
I'm thinking I should move them back on to the phone, do a new backup, then flash the new Rom, restore, and then move them back to the SD.

[Q] Native Apps

There is some way to remove the native apps from my rooted razr maxx hd?

Yes, however it is much better to freeze the app. You can use Titanium Backup to do that https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup&hl=en
When you freeze it, under the default setting of Titanium Backup, it will still get updates and remain frozen (won't be used by the system or be in the app drawer or on the home screens). This is much safer than removing it because if the phone misbehaves you can always unfreeze the app as well. There's no real reason to remove the app by deleting it.
If you do want to delete it, then native apps live in the /system/app/ folder, which is mounted as a read only filesystem. Since you are rooted, you can remount it so that you can read and write to the folder and delete the app, however that said, its much better to simply rename the app. I haven't renamed apps in the system folder on this phone (just got it) but have on the Samsung SGS II, which is a much safer phone to play around with like this from the look of it so far, though.
Every app on a stock install has two files, one with a .apk file extention and one with and .odex file extention. From experience with the other Android phone, you can just rename something to, for example, videoplayer.apk.backup and videoplayer.odex.backup. It can be renamed back later if you need to. You want a file browser that will remount the filesystem so that its rewritable. Root Explorer is what I've used but there's plenty of others that are gaining in popularity. It can be done at the command line as well.
All of the above said, though, you really, really, really, want to make sure that you aren't freezing or deleting or renaming an app like this that will interfere with your ability to undo it. If you do something that gets the phone stuck with lots of things crashing and making the phone unresponsive, or worse unbootable, then that's a very bad situation. It was always really easy to deal with from the recovery screen on my SGS II but I haven't yet tried things out on my RAZR HD in this fashion and things are differant when it comes to it. I haven't tried much out yet.
Also, and I really don't want to come off as being rude, and I hate it when people do on this forum, but because you had to ask if it was possible on a rooted phone at all sort of indicates that you might want to get as much advice about what you want to freeze or delete before doing it. Its prudent on any phone and less is more until you've gathered more information; and from the amount of support on this phone's section (low number of people having the phone and tinkering at this point) of the forum my guess is that this it will take some time and patients to get all the answers and information that you want before going balls deep.
Good luck, and remember that less is more, and that support will grow over time.
If you delete you will have a difficult time taking the next OTA. Freeze them. There is almost no space to be had by removing them.
