Anytime you are flashing a new rom, you need to wipe the previous data otherwise you'll have conflicts galore. It's a pain, but if you back up well, you can restore pretty fast.
I know where the op is going with this. All the methods of rooting I have found so far have you unlocking and flashing CWM. Doing this will wipe everything. If you could root first, things would be a little easier.

I've read all the unroot threads and I still haven't found the answer, so could someone please explain. I've decided to unroot but would really hate to have to wipe everything and set it up again.
I have a rooted 3.1 WW TF with cwm.
1. Is there a way to unroot without losing all app data etc, and then be able to use OTA to update to 3.2? I guess the first step would be to flash stock recovery but then what?
2. In the 'Batch script Pure Root Method' thread in the developers forum it was suggested that flashing stock boot and stock recovery and uninstalling the superuser app would achieve this, but from what I understand people have tried without success?

The unroot options available on this forum don't require you to wipe the data.
Just the cache, so you won't lose your apps and/or settings.

I installed VU on my inspire 4g. i have all my contacts on it and such . however i am giving that phone to my wife now. can i do a factory restore and it will restore it to the way VU was originaly installed without my apps and my contacts?

Yes you can, just either do the wipe user data option from clockworkmod recovery, or do a factory reset from the options.

No don't do that. Custom roms install things that will be deleted if you factory reset. Then it will bootloop or be missing apps do a master clear and then reflash the rom
what is the master clear? how do you do that? and you say flash the ROM, do you mean the stock ROM from HTC?

That depends on which rom she wants. If its her first android rom and you want to shoot for a stock feel then yes do the stock HTC rom. If she is comfortable with a custom rom then do a full wipe and then reinstall VU. Custom roms install things to the data partition which gets wiped when you do a factory reset causing apps to force close or not be there and depending on the custom tweaks it can also cause a bootloop at times.
I've been playing around with a Nexus S 4G that I have lying around and never used, and I've ran into a few problems, but you've all been helpful. I rooted all my old EVO 4G's without any problem, but the other day I rooted my NS4G using a one click/simple root and downloaded ClockWorkMod etc. But now for some reason It seems like I've almost lost my root? Is that possible? I still have the little unlocked symbol when booting up.
I've searched this forum and Google and haven't found anything, which could possibly be because I don't know what to look for. I've never had this happen :/

Now I just need to re figure out how to backup my stock rom on rom manager. I need to do that if I'm going to flash a custom rom onto my NS4G correct? I've never actually gone that far with my phones lol.

Okay lol hold on so just go make sure you
1. Unlocked the bootloader right?
2. Flashed a custom recovery (clockworkmod)?
3. Flashed superuser for root access?
4. Now you have a stock rooted ROM?
If you have/did all that then yeah you could backup your stock rooted ROM, you don't need to back it up but its helpful just incase you mess something you could always restore it to start all over

Unlocked Bootloader? If I boot in fastboot it says Unlocked. Is this what you mean?
I have ClockWorkMod, but I haven't done anything with it.

Yeah if it says unlocked your good to go. The super user.zip you first flashed won't be needed once you flash different ROMS, it was only needed for stock because you didn't install a ROM you just unlocked the boot loader and super user just gave you root access that didn't come with stock.
Yeah backup your stock ROM JUST in case you encounter a boot loop so you can just restore and start over, you don't need to back up CM9 that's completely your choice if you want . Its convenient though if you like CM9 but still like to flash other ROMS that way you can just go back if you miss CM9 without doing the whole setup process.
And a full wipe is
Data/factory reset
Then wipe dalvik under "advanced"
Then wipe system and boot under the "mount" option in CWM

The hidden status bar and bottom menu hidden is amazing. I also like the inverted G-Mail and Facebook. Is this all separate from the Nightly ROM?
Hey guys, its my first post and I tried searching the forums and google for the answer but didn't seem to find any.
I have the s3 SCHi535-VRLHE firmware and rooted my phone with through Noxious Ninja's walkthrough. During the process (Win7 4bit) after installing the drivers I let windows update update my drivers and cause a conflict with the 1.4.6 drivers. Should of stopped there but went through with rooting anyway (I know I'm a noob).
I have not flashed any custom ROMs after I rooted so my question is what's the difference between a factory reset vs. flashing the stock rom back onto my phone now?
Looking forward to reading and hopefully learning something from your responses!

A factory reset will just clear out your user data. You should probably put a stock ROM on your exSDcard, boot into recovery, wipe data, then flash the ROM. That will put you back to stock. Though you'll still be rooted and unlocked.

If I already did a factory wipe/reset is it safe to flash the stock rom onto that or do I have to root again?

I am quite new on this but am getting really tired of my tf700 being sluggish and slow, so I decided to flash a new rom and try to make a NVflash backup first just to be safe. But before doing all this I wanted to make a backup of all my app data which I can do easily with a rooted tablet and a backup app. Problem is, I am on 10.6.1.14.10 right now and I need 10.6.1.14.8 to be able to root it. So I decided that I should root it before making a backup, so here's my question, does a downgrade of stock rom require a clean wipe or wipe data at all? Or is it safe for me to downgrade, install a backup app for app data and then unlock make NVflash-blob and so on?
tl;dr Does downgrading from 10.6.1.14.10->10.6.1.14.8 require a data wipe?

When you install the full firmware from Asus, it will wipe everything on you sd before installing. In another word, you will loose your personal data if you downgrade your firmware. Backup everything that you need before downgrading. I am very sure that is the case...

That's why he/she doesn't need to wipe anything - the firmware flash will do it

Ah okay, thanks. That means that I can't do a backup after downgrading. Does an unlock of the tablet wipe data though? The problem I'm having is that I want to save app data before doing anything and the only way to do that without root that I've found is through helium (aka carbon) but I have yet to make Helium work, I've done a backup but not succeeded to restore the app data that I did a backup on.
Is it possible to unlock and install TWRP and do a backup that way? Or does that involve a wipe in any of the steps too?

Unlock is only touched your bootloader and do not wipe your system or data. You are safe on that case..
Since you are on the latest firmware, you can unlock first and try to learn fastboot to install the latest TWRP. When you have TWRP installed, you can backup your apps from there. Good luck. :fingers-crossed:

I do not know what kind of app data you want to back up.
Without using TiBu (for which you would need root) I got a pretty seamless transition by just copying everything in my "/storage/emulated/0" directory to my PC and copying it back after wiping/formatting the data partition and installing the same apps I had before.
Don't know what firmware you are coming from, but if you are on JB 4.2 already and follow the steps you mentioned in your last post, and you do not format your data partition, your app data should be intact anyway even after flashing CROMi-X.

Yes, it works on the same rom but I don't know if you nandroid from stock and restore them on cromi x... Are we talking on the same things? Maybe I misunderstand what is the definition of app data... Any way, if you know a better way, he/she will be more than happy to follow your helps.. That is all know and I will follow this post to learn a better method... thanks..

I just did this last week after the OTA update to 10.6.1.14.10 so I had to downgrade to .08.
I made a app+data backup with the stock backup and moved the backup folder to my microSD card, then used another microSD card to do the downgrade, your card must be formatted fat32, after downgrade restore your backup, all apps and data was fine. Then I unlocked and used Scotts tool to install TWRP, goomanager dose not work, and follow the info in "ASUS TF700T unlock and root JB 4.2.1 stock" the CromiX install went smooth as silk. There are a lot of choices to make during the install I chose the default the first time.
