Galaxy S III Discussion - Android General

Hello everyone, this thread will serve as a discussion for the upcoming Galaxy S III which is expected to be previewed at MWC in February.
Here's some of the specs that most of us can expect:
Exynos Quad-Core CPU
Super Amoled HD Screen (1280 x 720) - however, we don't know if this will use Pentile or RGB
ICS (of course)
4.65 screen size
3D capable?
2GB of RAM
A new version of TouchWiz - TouchWiz 5?
One of the big things that I hope Samsung really changes is - its build quality. I really hope they consider changing from plastic (and yes I know the plastic is VERY durable) to a more premium feel such as aluminum. There were some rumors that the SGS III would ditch plastic, but we'll have to see.
So, this thread is open to discussion on what you guys would like to see in the GSIII, and what you guys are expecting. Feel free to give me suggestions to add on to the list, and please no flaming/trolling.

I would like the see al the features from above, but no 3D, a friend of my has a 3D phone and it realy sucked

I vote for "No 3D" too. I guess (hope) they are bringing separate 3D model to the market.
I like the build of the SGS2. I wish they get rid of the hardware buttons and make the bezel as thin as possible.

- Holographic keyboard as shown in the iphone 5 rumor vid
- mind reading UI so to open apps and type with use of hands
- laser beam gun to blast anyone that dares to defy

I totally agree about the 3D thing. I would not like to see 3D on the next Galaxy S III. Thanks for the replies guys

Yea, I'm sure it'll have one. They better not pull a Nexus on us!

Not worried about 3D, but the 4.65" HD screen is a must, as is a return to the Wolfson sound chip (or non-Yamaha at any rate).
I'd like some metal in the build too, but I doubt it'll happen, Samsung seem to be determined to go down the thinner-the-better road.

I want to see these improvements:
- Wolfson or better sound chip
- No more color banding
- No more yellowish on left screen
- No more dirt between the gorilla glasss and super amoled++
- Next generation of Super Amoled ++?
- Much much longer battery juice
- Dual hot swappable battery
- HD resolution at least 1280x800
- No bigger than ~4.0-4.5"
- No hardware button except power and volume
- Thinner and lighter
- Thinner screen bezel
- Scratch-proof back border(material like the plastic on the back of SGS2 is welcome)

Suggested features
Should finally be able to make coffee.
Dual boot Windows 8 ARM.
Auto-encryption for homemade porn in the camera app.
E-ink display.
A 17y/o Korean lugging an optic fiber cable for connectivity instead of wifi.
Compact Flash card slot.
Myspace integration.
Crank loaded processor.
Virtual Boy cartridge slot and Powerglove support.

I'd love to see a wake up lag of 3 secs so anyone could feel the quad proc rumbling up, just like a Cummins diesel.
Every time I see the Sensation XE snapping when I press the power button it makes me want to choke a dev near me ( though they are innocent and never stated the wake up lag comes from the proc waking up).

LOL, this I'd love to see

- Better camera quality. No framerate dips. No white balance problems. Usable HD resolution (why do you want FullHD if picture is full of noise and not very sharp).
- No yellow tint.
- No smudged pixel areas with a different saturation value only overcomed with high levels of brightness, a lot like the yellow tint.
- Better battery.
- Dual Core Cortex A15 better than Quad Core Cortex A9.
- PowerVR GPU.
- No 3D screen.
- Super AMOLED HD Plus (that is, RGB matrix instead of PenTile), 1280x800.
- White color case from the beginning.
- Continue with the plastic-crystal fiber mixture instead of going metal.
- MicroSD slot LVMed with the internal storage. You always can do a copy to a bigger SD card or same card size to maintain the LVM integrity. That would mean some more managing options on kies for Windows users.
- 2 GB of RAM.
- 32 GB of internal storage.
- Ice Cream Sandwich.
- Quicker updates, not months later.

Better sound quality/ loudspeakers would be a welcome!

I agree with some of your suggestions but how can you possibly want a SGS3 to be thinner and lighter this phone is already thinner and lighter enough.
As regards having an aluminium back in theory it sounds good however should you happen to drop your phone it will most likely smash to bits which is why i suggest keeping the plastic back, remember this video folks, the reason the SGSII didn't smash half as much as the iPhone is because of the plastic.

I'm hoping for Holographic capabilities so I won't have to spend money on real life strippers.

All of these would be nice:
- Ability to remove a soggy biscuit from my cup of coffee
- MTP support for OS X (if that's even possible?)
- Two SD card slots
- Solid aluminium back/side (Apple would sue)
- Remove the stupid voice thing when you double tap home button
- Ability to choose whether you want stock Google or Sammy rom
I've never had any yellow screen problems, is it a particular batch or country that got it?

Yes, it's possible. There's a library called libmtp that must be compiled for Mac OS X. On GNU/Linux is ready to install from the repositories of your distribution.
Samsung just should help developing that library giving patches with code for their devices.

[Q] THE PERFECT PHONE! How would you design it?

Everyday we hear about the newest technology coming out for mobile devices. but if we at XDA could design our own branded phone, how would we do it?
what would the specs be like?
would it run a home-baked version of android? or the latest WinMO? how about Ios4?
screen size? would it be small like the aria? or a 4.3" screen? or would we opt for a tablet?
speaking of screens? pixel Qi? Super AMOLED? basic LCD? FAMOLED? or the famous Gorilla Glass? how would we view our device?
would it be running 512 RAM? or a whopping 1024 Mb?
would we go for the 1.2 Ghz dual core processors? or conserve our battery and stay at 800 Mhz?
would it come with a QWERTY board? or on-screen only? hard buttons or touch-sensitive (for the main four buttons)?
What other crazy technology would you guys like to see in the ultimate XDA-Mobile device?
as a side note- what about pre-installed apps?
I'd take the HD2, and add SPB MS5 and S2P.
Job done.
God I have simple needs
Wouldn't this be a fun task to be chosen for. Lets see:
Stock Android would be the OS with an Nvidia Tegra2 dual core processor. I'd slap 1536MB of RAM in it, the other 512MB would be for the OS and another 1024 for the user. Because I like having a hard keyboard there would be one of those, obviously making it a slider. It would support recording in 1080p from it's 12MP camera with xenon flash and have a mini HDMI output on it. The radio module would support all GSM 3G bands and have the ability to utilize 4G if the carrier has it. The wifi would support the N band as well as B/G. Wifi tethering would be included along with NFC. All that would be displayed on a capacitive 3.7" 640x960 (~300ppi) S-AMOLED screen protected by Gorilla Glass. The power would be supplied be an advanced LiPoly battery with carbon nanotube electrodes in it to increase output and run time. Surround that with a aluminum alloy case and I think I'd be set. I might think of more later.
4" [insert latest OLED technology here] screen, landscape QWERTY, Tegra 2, great speakers, 1080p video out, SD slot accessible without removing battery, not designed by Samsung and definitely not in glossy black
That should last me for years and is not at all farfetched (I'm guessing we will see something like this around Q2-Q3 2011, and hopefully by then HTC would have tamed their recent obsession with cutting corners)
After really putting some thought into this, here is what I came up with:
Hardware
Processor: nVidia Tegra 2 Dual-Core
Memory: 1024 MB
Screen: 4" FAMOLED 800x1200 (~360ppi)
Camera: 1080p (30FPS) 8MP with dual xenon flash (back); 3MP front facing camera
Keyboard: On-screen (Swype)
Connections: WiFi a/b/g/n with latter being dual band; GSM (850/900/1800/1900/2100); LTE 4G
Additional: Trackball, Volume Rocker (left top), capacitive buttons, camera button (right bottom), 3.5mm headphone jack (top right), side-loading expandable microSD slot (right top), 1080p mini-HDMI output (left bottom)
Design
-Aluminum alloy unibody-esque reminiscent of Nexus One (i.e. rounded edges)
-Black matte finish with rubberized texture (also in silver finish)
OS/Software
-Android 3.0 Honeycomb
-Video editing software
-Facial recognition software
-Google Market
Manufactured by HTC

2Ghz processor
a real hardware keyboard
Able to boot WM/Android/WP7
4.3" screen if possible with the above post technology
hTC desing of course
and hTC OS!!
Hardware keyboard, Latest android OS, 4.3" FAMOLED screen, gorilla glass, 1.2GHz processor, best GPU to date (don't know what that is), 3200mAH battery (LiPoly), HDMI out of course, agree on the 12MP camera, 8MP multi-focus front-facing camera, LED Notifications (pretty common but still saying it so y'know), HTC form-factor and button layout (volume top-left, camera bottom right, etc), ditto on the aluminum casing (matte black finish), rubberized edges (fall guards, not sure what they're really called), totally pre-rooted (no NAND lock or rootkits yay!), 4G capable, wifi 802.11a/b/g/n, up to 12dB speaker output, 3.5mm headphone jack, full bluetooth (headset, wiimote, game controller/keyboard support), no simlock, non-integrated SIM, magnetic docking detection (those of you who know how some phones detect docking will know what I mean), microUSB connector, full gapps pre-installed (since no nandlock you can remove the system apps you don't want ^_^), some sort of lost/stolen phone software like lookout mobile (or custom one ), XDA app pre-installed naturally, swype (some people like it,not me but it's popular), ease of theming like in CM6, live wallpapers, (if possible) 1024x768 772ppi res (sweet), full flash support, OC kernel and something like set-cpu pre-installed, of course terminal emulator or android terminal (same thing really), 256MB RAM for OS and 1024 storage, microSD expansion slot not under the battery cover (gets annoying to pop it off to play with the card) and I think that's it for now ^_^
Edit: wow looks like a lot of us have the same ideas, that must mean those ideas are awesome . HTC should definitely start a research panel on XDA.
the perfect phone to me needs to surpass all that is current and then hold it's position on top for several years so software can catchup.
imagine a phone without the front buttons at all, instead, slap them on the right side along with the volume rocker for a piano like feel. top to bottom something like this:
vol+
vol-
menu-indented
home
back
search/camera click
now you can reduce the bezels on the width to nothing and the height to just allow the front cam, ear speaker, mic, misc sensors.
then put hdmi and usb on the left for docking (more l8r)
now pack the features in...
since were talking about a phone that needs to reign king for awhile, let's go with the tegra 5 (logan) and support it with about 2GB of ram, 32 and 64GB internal memory, 32GB expansion, an 11+ MP camera (more on camera later), 720p 4.3" display (1280x720) with an 16:9 aspect all on samoled plus (approx. 341PPI)(read the LITI technology part), and slap stock 4.0 android in it.
i'm envisioning a near borderless, stylish, phone...maybe blue on the backing?
now the fun part...add-ons:
a 3 prone clip-on optical lens for camera (just press n turn fashion)
a slim, foldable, keyboard that plugs into the usb (removable)
a "controller" dock the the phone sets into and gives a playstaion controller like feel with the phone in the middle
lapdock? (thanks moto...)
more to come, but that's my idea of things...
able to Launch ios, android and wm7
Motorola Milestone 2?
atrix w/ defy protection would be perfect for me
The batphone! Can't get better than that!

What would be your ideal phone?

What would be your ideal phone? Just list the specs of the phone you think would blow ALL the other phones out of the water and would keep you satisfied for the full 2 years. I'll start :]
1) 4.5" Super Amoled HD display(going edge to edge, removing the Sammy/Verizon logos to make room for more screen)
2) 4g LTE with great modems/radios so we aren't dropping constantly
3) 1800mah battery(minimum! I'd want to be able to get 8 hours of heavy usage without calibrating the battery!)
4) A notification LED... seriously it's not hard!
5) Quad core Tegra 3
6) Full 1080p video recording at 30fps+
7) A nice quality camera, not just megapixels but a camera that doesn't wash the pictures out and just looks nice and lifelike.
8) Front facing camera
9) A good speaker(both the earpiece and the actual speaker). Our Charge has a GREAT speaker, very loud with a nice hump so you can hear the sound even when it's laying on its back.
10) ICS out of the box with great support for bug fixes and future OS releases!
11) Lock button on the side; like the Charge. I can't STAND how so many phones feel the need to put the lock button on the top, it's just so out of the way and annoying to press. Makes locking the phone feel like a chore... lol.
12) 2 models of the same phone, one with a physical keyboard and one without. I personally would always choose the keyboard version(if it has a Droid 3 style keyboard) but some people like the keyboard-less phones for less bulk.
13) ALL CARRIERS! I HAVE A FAMILY PLAN AND WILL NEVER SWITCH TO ANOTHER CARRIER JUST FOR 1 PHONE! AHHHHG! Lol.
14) Have the option to choose either TouchWiz(or the other makers equivalent) or stock(you know, the Gummycharged/Nexus look). Give people who don't mod/root options too!
15) Probably the most important; unlocked bootloader.
I know some of the tech isn't out yet but it will be by the end of this year/early next year. If they make a phone meeting these requirements in all honesty it would probably last me 4 years. A lot of people complained that $300 was too much for a phone but I would gladly pay $500 for this phone.. on contract. Although it will never happen it's kinda fun listing the specs for your ideal phone, give it a try
Alright, i'll throw out some ridiculous stuff...
1. 5" SAMOLED+HD (nothin' but screen...)
2. 4G...without the battery drain or dropouts.
3. 2000 mAh battery
4. Notification LED. Never had one on any of my phones but everyone says its nice to have...
5. Quad Core Tegra 3 1.5+ ghz (smokin...)
6. 1080p HD video at 24fps (most video cameras do this as standard)
7. 10MP camera with real focus and a dual LED flash
8. 8MP FFC (gotta strain that 4G)
9. Ear-rape volume speaker. Seriously, I want to be able to hear this thing over a jackhammer.
10. Ability to come out of sleep by pressing home
11. Ice Cream Sammidge. With FREQUENT updates, not this Samsung once-in-a-blue-moon-if-ever crap
11a. Excellent source.
12. An actual accurate predictive keyboard. Even the GB one is total horse ****, I just use SwiftKey.
13. Verizon only, *****es!
14. AOSP out of the box.
15. Unlocked bootloader.
16. Unlocked bootloader.
17. Unlocked bootloader.
18. Capacitive menu buttons
19. ASSLOAD of dev support!
20. Lightweight and slim, but not cheap feeling. Gorilla glass doesn't need to be said as it's becoming the standard.
Sent from my Droid Charge running GummyCharged 2.0
by capacitive buttons you mean the kind that are on the Bionic? Those are gross! I hate the "touch" buttons, I think the only thing that should be touch responsive is the "touch" screen! I think everything else should be physical.
You guys forgot one thing:
-Sandwich maker
It was implied... lol
Updates shouldn't b a problem for long... Samsung hired steve kondit(maybe spelled wrong) a.k.a cyanogen... Old news but still pumped..
1. Fascinate design with steel scratch proof backing,
4.3 in samoled HD something like 1900x1080p resolution DD
NO TOUCHWIZ... Maybe a nexus 4 vzw would b sweet
Quad core 1.5ghz hummingbird or tegra
A nokia 13mp rear camera
Ide b happy with a 3.2mp ffc
5 gen wireless internet something like 100mb/s lmao
Wireless battery charging(phone that never needs plugged in)
8gb of ram 64gb internal memory with a way to from anywhere view and transfer files from home cpu
And might as well add a 3d interactive projection display above screen..
And then I woke up

I don't know about my ideal phone, but my next phone will have:
HD samoled plus min 4.3"
Quad core
Same size or smaller than Charge.
Better battery than Charge
1 g ram
Faster camera
Honestly I'm pretty happy with the charge. Faster cpu would be nice for complex web pages. Screen is sweet, but a bit more res would be cool. Better camera is always good since it is the camera I use the most.

4.5" Super HD screen, 240 fps, tougher than gorilla glass.

New Sidekick (4G LX?) Wish List

Any Wish Lists for what the Sidekick 4G LX (I am guesstimating the new name of the Next Generation model) should have??
My list:
* A bigger screen (closer to 4 inches).
* Full Unicode Support, including manual entry of symbols (like Alt+#### on PCs and similar to older Sidekicks). Support for a wider array of symbols via the Symbols key (customizable??).
* More built-in memory.
* LED lights that are accessible to a wider array of apps (not just the built-in ones).
* Smiley Button that works in ALL apps, not just the built-in Texting app
* If you have to add bloatware (like DriveSmart) allow it to be easily uninstalled.
*Allow customizable color themes.
*provide a better font where it is clear the difference between l (lower L) I and 1 (like the older sidekicks did)
Any others you want to add to the list??
I'd be fine with retaining the screen we have now, though stretching it out to the borders of the case does sound nice. The bigger priorities for me would be to add a faster CPU, some extra memory, and get ICS. An HDMI output would be a nice bonus, but definitely not a requirement.
Despite what HTC says, I don't want my cell phone to be the thickness of a playing card. I quite like the chunky shape of the Sidekick and would much much much much much much much much much much much rather have that than an angular and awkward iPhone 4-shaped phone with shorter battery life. Really thin phones are weird to hold, and the battery life is short enough as it is with our chunky battery.
is it confirmed there making one? id like a bigger screen and a dual core, but thats about all.
Nothing specific other than saying they are not retiring the brand and hope to release a new version in the future.
I'd possibly be going on the crazy end of the spectrum for a great sidekick 4g/5g/lte whatev
5" screen with a keyboard that slides out (similar to the OQO model 2) with a full qwerty like the sidekick but with aswell a mouse button.
REAL GORILLA GLASS!!
on the face of the device would be captive touch buttons similar to ones found on the captivate/vibrant
A Texas instrument based cpu dual core preferably (TI because they are more friendly with source code)
1gb of ram
8gb internal memory aswell as a microSD slot
petaband radio similar to the one in the galaxy note so it will work just about anywyere with gsm
HDMI output
Sound chipset that has background filtering
ICS with as little reskinning as possible
probably will never happen but a mad man can dream can't he?

Why? The reason I own the SK4G is that it is the only phone besides the G1 with a 5-row keyboard and Hard-buttons. Making the hard-buttons capacitive is a deal-breaker for me! At least the Back button must be clicky hardware, not "don't know if I pressed it or not" and "sometimes press it by mistake" capacitive soft-buttons).
If this phone had updated processor/memory, a better camera with flash (or awesome low-light performance), and a brighter edge-to-edge high-res screen, it would be perfect. NFC and HDMI-out would be a bonus.
I really like the design on this device(slightly tilted screen, physical buttons, GREAT keyboard), so I wouldn't mind if they continued this train of thought. But yeah, more RAM would be a must, to hopefully prevent the freezing and rebooting problems. And for me, a 3.7 in. screen would be cool, and a better camera. And also, improve the trackpad.
I know what we need. Replace the utterly useless micro optical trackpad! Give us a ball, a nub, a much bigger optical trackpad, ANYTHING!
Also, an inverted T set of arrow keys in the keyboard would be spectacular.

With a screen that big, you could have a Function Key row and a number pad! It will end up looking like the new tablet with a slide out keyboard..

If there's going to be another sidekick, i'd avoid it like the plague if it's from samsung again. It says a lot when they get the keyboard drivers wrong on at least two phones. Also, touchwiz.
Here's what i'm hoping on the next sidekick, if we see another one:
- Dual core 1 GHz or more CPU
- 1GB RAM
- 5 row keyboard
- 4 inch screen (i don't mind bigger, but i think 4 inch is the most likely size, and should please most people)
- 960x540 screen (800x480 is getting a little outdated, though it's still a good resolution)
... and interestingly enough, this phone leaked a few days back with similar specs i listed, and i'm already eyeing it: http://www.phonearena.com/phones/LG-Cayenne_id7120
I don't know the general opinion of LG around here, but I've had a good experience with my ancient LG GW620 and its lovely 5 row keyboard, though it was slow as hell and uses a CPU that's even older than the G1.

The optical trackthing is useless, agreed. The sun and other heat sources create more input on it than I do. Or did, before I disabled it and forgot about its existence.
Real arrow keys would be nice, but I remapped the insipid smiley key to the up arrow, and the only-ever-pressed-accidentally microphone key to down arrow. So I can at least get around in my command history.
Apart from that, as others have said, more RAM (I'll go so far as to say 1.5 GB), although I don't really feel the need for a faster processor. 5 GHz 802.11n would be nice.
And last but not least... better code drops from the manufacturer. Samsung and T-Mobile did the bare minimum to comply with the GPL. TI internals would be a good start. Fewer proprietary peripherals, more open ones.
And under no circumstances may the keyboard be reduced in number of rows, spacing, or tactile quality.
I want my d-pad and hardware trackball back.
And, I want my pop/swivel hinge back.
There's no harm in putting that d-pad back. I am tired of hearing people that play games on their phone complain that a phone looks like you could play a game on it.
Devolution is real.
As a SK supporter since the day i had to plug my redic dot matrix camera into my bric err cinderblock black and white OG sidekick "1g" and my mr cartoon sk2 and the overhyped overpriced no difference but a lil thinner and a flashy rollerball with same booty screen sk3 (they lost me to crackberry during the whole slide lx dwade ed 07 08 09 new sk every month bs) id like to say the typical dual core 4+ inch screen 1gb+ ram as most but by the time this thing actually would come out u gotta imagine the landscape of the future androids. ics is already internally being considered a flop or to be politically correct a "gateway"(windoze me millenium ed if u will)to intertwine both tablet and phone interfaces and to make way for the more slightly desktop interfaced and integrated android 5 already in testing and rumored to make a q4 this year debut...so in other words q3 next yr if we r lucky.(its coming eventually, phone tablet and chromebooks all running the same android) so seeing how the sidekick has historically been behind the ball as far as tech ill just be happy with a galaxy s2 running ics built into a SK package. i tried to pretend when i 1st upgraded to the s2 with a bt keyboard and rigged case but nothing and i mean nothing out today beats the sidekick layout and keyboard. give me the s2 guts in a sk package and a below 500 pricetag a year from today and im happy, bigger higher res screen is a must but for petes sake...dont forget the freaking camera flash this time!

prefer but dont really care about the hinge but ditto on the rollerball, tho it jams with dust and the d pad. this new joystick sucks balls. btw while we r dreaming. quad core the b 2gb ram 32gb internal 64gb external sdxc and a 5 inch hd screen 8+MP cam w/flash! all with the sidekick layout/keyboard and id shell out 1500 bucks right now lol samsung would prolly just jack it up with gingerbread or some crap
I'm quite happy with the hinge design we have now. It's very strong and solid. Much more so than the classic Sidekick mechanism. I've yet to see a Sidekick 4G with the screen broken off. But I've seen older sidekicks in two pieces.
I suspect it also allows the phone to be thinner, but I can't confirm that.

Samsung GS4 vs HTC One - which features do you think are actually better on the GS4?

Rather than having 500000000 threads comparing GS4 to One, put all your thoughts in here.
Don't forget to vote.
Here is a good list posted by -]Megacharge[- - which I think most would agree with - if you came to the thread looking for quick overview, here it is:
S4:
-Bigger screen
-Removable storage
-Removable battery
-Can use screen with gloves on
-Marginally faster benchmark scores in the S600 version
-Much faster benchmark scores in the Exynos version
-TouchWiz including a bunch of S-software (which some people may find useful - HTC's betting on design as their number one selling point. Samsung's doing the same with software features)
-IR LED (TV Remote)
-Android 4.2.2
[Gorilla Glass 3, 1.9MHz clock speed, DDR3, thinner, lighter, bigger display in smaller footprint]
One:
-Higher PPI and color accuracy
-Design
-IR LED (TV Remote)
-Dual front facing speakers (great speakers)
-Dual membrane mics
-Sense 5 (incredibly fluid with no lag and looks more "adult" than touchwiz)
-Low light camera performance
-Android 4.1.2
[Gorilla Glass 2, 1.7MHz clock speed, DDR2, chunkier, a little heavier, aluminium body]

You said aluminum body + looks better, don't they go together? HTC is trying very hard to sell its "premium look" more than anything else
Swyped from another galaxy
LOOkS and BUILD QUALITY-htc wins..
CPU - samsung.. because having those a15 is really gonna help that 1080 screen on heavy tasks..
GPU- samsung again.. people who game will really find it better.. and it being power vr means games wil get better optimized faster amd be better on the s4..
SD slot, removable battery- samsung
MUSIC HEADPHONE quality- no idea.. but beats suck
And dont know if samsung is using that wolfson dac which is good af
SCREEN- no one wins .subjective.. I love amoleds and that 1080 amoled looks sexy. But the htc also has one hell of an lcd screen
UI- subjective.. I find sense better but blinkfeed is nonsense. But touchwiz is functional
DEVELOPMENT- samsung... and S- off sucks..lol..
BATTERY- Ssamsung.. looking at samsungs history of phones, they always had better battery.. I heard htc one has come up though.. byt u bet the new s4 will be even better than the s3 and htc one
Samsung also has some extra features which maybe considered as gimmicks.. but zoe, drama shot , erase features and other editing stuffs are in both..
I might buy both... htc for that built, but in the end samsung for that power and development wins it all
.....
HTC has louder sound and better on speakers.
HTC is full of metal vs Samsung plastic - so better build quality.
HTC has better AnTuTu scores and higher clock. (GSIV has 1.6Ghz - says gsmarena.com).
HTC has famous "Sense" which is way better than Touchwiz in my opinion.
HTC's camera is better on dark places.
HTC is more compact.
HTC has better xda development. (Exynos is bad documentated and HTC already has great devs workin' on it - and yeah team Venom).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not sure about GPU, I'd say Samsung is better.
Samsung has bigger screen.
Samsung has head moving are pausing things
Floating touch (I would turn it off but I would say floating touch games maybe - that would be interesting).
Samsung will update its device way more than HTC to newer android versions.
Samsung has external SD up to 64GB. So you could have impressing 126GB of memory for your files!
Samsung has better camera in my opinion.
Samsung has bigger battery.
Samsung is more sold device - more support (bit that doesn't mean anything).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tie:
AMOLED vs SLCD - depends on person.
Hard to break or easily removable battery.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Overall HTC is better as "pure android experience or AOSP and pure performance and great made phone".
And Sammy software things and functionality.
But I think I am going for HTC if screen is big enough.
I tried to do review not being fanboy of both!

I'll break this down to two simple facts.
1. Expandable storage is a deal breaker for me. The One has no expandable storage, so when you run out of space, you're done - time to start eating up your mobile data plan for cloud services. Deal breaker.
2. S-Off is terrible. Something tells me one reason HTC stopped providing expandable storage slots in their phones is due to the way the Vivid had to be S-Off'ed. You have to short out a contact point on the phone's main board with the ground on the SD slot to hack the damn S-Off. Maybe this was a major flaw and combined with other reasons, they just decided they would scrap the storage slot altogether. Without S-Off, the whole process of flashing new ROMs becomes more tedious and annoying. And let's not forget that you can scrap the idea of flashing new radios to your device if you can't S-Off an HTC phone. HTC is not too developer-friendly lately...
Is it even possible to S-Off the One X or X+? I haven't looked at those boards in detail in quite a while.
Wow that was a long answer for two simple facts.
Sent from my HTC PH39100...soon to be Galaxy S4.
The fact that Samsung seems to be listening to their customers (unlike HTC), is what does it.
Advantages of the One:
-Premium build, subjectively better design
-Camera optimized for low-light environments
-Screen is objectively better at accurate color reproduction
-Stereo speakers
...
Is that what customers want? Some, sure. But it seems like HTC is playing Apple's form > function game. And they won't win, because their software, battery life and camera are not up to par.
What does the S4 have?
-Packs a larger display into a body that is smaller, slimmer and lighter than the S3 (yet people will still go around complaining that 5" is 'just too big'), more ergonomic than the hard edges of the One's design
-Display benefits from power savings of PenTile matrix while the resolution nullifies any complaints about its perceived sharpness; EDIT: actually, the display utilizes a new, brighter PHOLED technology and a completely different PenTile 'diamond' matrix that seems to address most complaints about the S3's display on their own
-Display is subjectively better then the One's for some—AND has built-in screen tuning options for those that want accurate, natural colors (Movie/Cinema mode on the S3/Note 2 is comparable to sRGB emulation mode on a wide gamut monitor in my own side-by-side comparisons)
-Display's infinite contrast is objectively better, and the lower reflectivity and sunlight legibility is something other manufacturers have fallen behind with their 1080p displays
-Superior homegrown SoC (although I have no idea why the U.S. is stuck with Qualcomm again with all the new LTE tech the Exynos chipset has); people knocking the big.LITTLE architecture seem to be ignoring the purpose of it (it's not just 'twice as many cores' or 'not-really-eight-cores')
-1.7mm thinner than the One, yet it packs a larger, removable battery and microSD slot (deja vu)
-USB 3.0 on the Exynos
-TouchWiz is better than Sense, despite subjectivity over appearance: lighter, smoother, less buggy, closer to vanilla Android in functionality and packed with extra features (many which are actually useful) that can be easily turned off—vs. a bloated interface that tries to undermine the Android interface and sticks you with homescreen limitations like a Flipboard knock-off that can't be fully disabled; I personally find Sense even uglier than TouchWiz with its mix of colorful icons and flat black theming
-A camera that, for another generation in a row, doesn't ruin its image quality with overaggressive noise reduction and processing like HTC's offerings, while packing as many features as one would want into the camera app (like the ability to make animated GIF's with static backgrounds easily)
-Battery life that is sure to surpass its predecessor, unlike the lackluster battery performance seen in the One/Butterfly/DNA
-Gorilla Glass 3 over the One's Gorilla Glass 2
-Unified delivery to all carriers, while the One's future on a major carrier like Verizon is still just rumors
-Latest JellyBean 4.2.2 vs. One's JellyBean 4.1, and not only a much better commitment to and delivery of updates than HTC, but a commitment to and delivery of bringing new software features to older flagship devices when they don't depend on new hardware
-The ability to run ANY two apps side-by-side on the screen at the same time for multitasking—and the ability to run pop-up apps like the browser, video player, calculator, etc. on top of that
-Not only are features like the delivered Air Gestures and Eye Scroll useful and polished (maybe not so much with Eye Scroll's polish), but Floating Touch is major: completely new and unique screen tech that essentially gives you a mouse cursor for hovering, which is a boon for web browsing and Adobe Flash
-Unlocked bootloader vs. the One's locked bootloader (despite all the negative feedback HTC received previously)
While the S4 might not blow anyone away at first glance, it's clear that Samsung pays attention to things that matter when it comes to using your device, down to the details that everyone else seems to overlook. The One is a beautiful phone to look at and hold, but beyond that it holds the same disappointments that held HTC back the last time around.

I hope you're joking.
I know many people are not fans of the home button, but I use the hell out of it my S3 and I prefer to use it when activating the display from sleep mode. Many times when my phone is just laying on the table, I can just hit the home button and swipe down for messages or to change songs etc. I just find it much more easy to access than the power button. I do prefer the look of the HTC over the S4.

Stereo speakers on a device that small, the HTC One, is pointless anyway. The whole point of stereo is so you can differentiate the sounds in each ear, thereby creating the stereo effect. With two speakers so close together, the sounds will mesh together by the time they hit your ears anyway, making a more monaural sound.
I think the only real advantage HTC has is the build quality of the phone. But that advantage is moot to me because I always put a nice case on whatever phone I buy.

Please point out any errors in my reasoning. I think I made a decent case, care to actually make one yourself?
When you compare the two there's not a lot that's unique going for the One except for it's beautiful all-aluminum design and dual speakers. The fact that it's the same physical size (while being thicker and heavier) as the SGS4 with last year's 4.7" display size isn't going to help it. Here's a quick run down comparing the two. It was the answer to "why would anyone buy the SGS4 over the One" from thier forum.
Larger 5" SAMOLED display with vibrant colors
Thinner and lighter with other dimensions being near equal
13MP camera (more detail)
Better battery life, bigger and removable battery
Replaceable back cover if its damaged
Expandable storage
Gorilla Glass 3 (versus 2)
Android 4.2.2 (vs. 4.1.2, at least for now)
Dual Camera (insert yourself in to photos you take)
Drama Shot (a simpler Zoe)
Sound and Shot to record voice comments on still photos
Story Album to create and send printed photo albums
Share Music to turn multiple SGS4's in to surround sound
Group Play to share content across multiple devices without the need for a Wi-FI connection
S-Translator integrated in to multiple apps like e-mail and the stock browser
Smart Pause/Smart Scroll to use your eyes to control the device
All the existing motion and voice controls Samsung provides in TW
Air View to expand content by hovering your finger over it
A display you can use with gloves on
S Voice Drive which maximizes the size of what's displayed and allows motion and voice to control things you use when driving
Optical Reader integrated in to stock apps to import data via the camera
S Health to track weight, blood pressure, exercise, etc.
I'll take a stab at the One's advantages over the SGS4. For the sake of discussion assume the SGS4 being compared against is an LTE version running S-600 too. Things like LCD vs. AMOLED and Sense vs. TW are obviously based on personal preference.
Beautiful all-aluminum unibody design
LCD display with bright realistic colors
Sense’s more aesthetically pleasing appearance
UltraPixels (better low light performance)
Dual front facing speakers
Zoe
BlinkFeed
It’s not made by Samsung (for the haters )
Other than Zoe and BlinkFeed Sense 5 is carry over from earlier versions. Even LG's doing a lot more with s/w than HTC. The lack of s/w features, whether they are real or gimmicks, is going to hurt the One with the masses who like "more" rather than less; especially at the same price.
LG already offers several special apps on its Android smartphones, like QSlide for viewing two apps at once on a device's display and QRemote for controlling home entertainment gear. Today LG expanded is software offerings with another new feature dubbed "Smart Video." According to LG, Smart Video takes advantage of eye recognition technology to track a user's eye movements while he or she is watching a video and, when it detects that user isn't looking at the device's display, it will pause the clip automatically. Playback will resume when the device detects that the user is once again looking at the screen. LG says that Smart Video will be rolled out soon as part of a Value Pack update. In addition to Smart Video, the Value Pack will include a Dual Camera feature that will take photos using the front and back cameras simultaneously, Magic Remote Keypad and Text Keypad additions to the QRemote app, Video Pause/Resume that will allow users to stop and start while capturing a video to create one continuous clip, and a set of color emoticons. The Smart LED Lighting surrounding the LG Optimus G Pro's physical home button will also be updated to allow users to assign colors to specific contacts.

I don't understand this storage business if the minimum available storage option for a phone is 32GB?
How many things do most people put on their phones? All the people I know who own a GS3 have a 16GB model with no micro SD card and they continuously make the lack of expandable storage on recent phones a big deal.
At the moment I have no idea which one I want more, I will likely get the GS4 because HTC One has a good chance at not showing up on Verizon. (entirely Verizon's fault though, looks like Verizon has been screwing over HTC for quite awhile recently, the lack of expandable storage was due to Verizon not HTC on the DNA; and the One's availability looks like to be another Verizon issue; I also am pretty positive for it developement being slightly better than the DNA since it is multicarrier)
I do really like the GS4 though, it's design was something I did not like on the GS3 either though.

I prefer a smart phone which will never come on earth.
Android version : 12.3.4 (apple cake)
Inbuilt memory : 32 gb
Rom : 10 gb
Camera: 20mp primary , 5 mp secondary.
For now its enough, later i demand for much more(just kidding).
Goog thread i say:thumbup:
basically the GS4 but a 4k screen (will have to be closer to 5" then) with S pen and 8 GB of ram plus 128 gb built in micro sd micro hdmi and mhl wireless charging dual band wifi plus a qwerty, a huge ass battery maybe 10000mah, some awesome speakers, a 3DS type glassesless 3d display 2 awesome cameras on the back (galaxy camera, lumina 920, etc), 2 normal (for back) cameras on the front 8/16 mp, and ruggedized. It'd be brick like but awesome
actually maybe make a version with only 5000mah and no keyboard for slimmer profile
The design of a HTC One, but a 15mpx back camera, 8mpx front camera, 64gb internal memory and i've heard about MeRam, wich can reach 128gb, it will be really amazing, and I think it's a future not so far!

I'm sorry but are you daft?
It already is 5", and it can already handle 4k media, but having it on a 5" is completely useless... in fact even the 1080p display is an overkill.
8gb RAM for what, exactly?
10'000 mAh battery would be bloody fantastic though
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
I thought the gs4 was slightly under 5" whereas the world's smallest 4k display was slightly over, also not thinking to straight size wise
The 8gb of ram would be nice to have for having apps open, I find my transformer can get bogged down pretty quickly with only 1gb and stuffs starting to come with 2gb so to future proof instead of the 4 next year or 2015 go for the 8 of 2016/2017
Actually it'd be much more useful for running the arm based versions of desktop oses
1080p isn't overkill at 5" it's just not really worth it. You can notice the difference between 1080p and 720p maybe even between 1080p and 900p but except some people with penile displays no one is complaining about 720p. The idea is that now you could get some giant magnifying thing to turn it into a 4k tablet sans touch
And I just realized I forgot a pico projector
And while I'm at it let's through in some laser pointers (one of each color currently available) along the top on the side of the ir blasrer
Does it have a barometer? Also let's add a retractable antenna. Also radio and TV tuners wireless charging and let's through in a full sized usb port and make that mini hdmi full size
The real reason for 4k over 1080p is the 3d
Also it needs to be capable of being really bright, and have 2 rear and 1 front led camera flashes along with satellite phone capabilities plus all band gsm, lte, and cdma built in
Maybe throw in some emp protection like all offline parts being shielded in an internal Faraday cage
All the usbs have to be 3.0 of course maybe add a mini usb for compatibility with other chargers. Actually add a proprietary 100pin connector that supports accessories like an apple 30 pin or lightning bolt adapter or an ethernet port or a tazer or a hand crank charger or basically anything you could ever use or want plugged into your cell phone. Also it should charge through motion like the ecodrive watches and through heat like being in your pockwt
Also have them use parts designed to be able to be replaced or upgraded (still soldered for space reasons)
Also let's add 2 more audio jacks and make all 3 capable of being headphones & mic, mic, line in, line out, guitar amp and combined surround sound audio
At thus point this thing pry cost near the millions so let's add a Kingston lock port
Oh and the keyboard is red back lit
Also this needs a military grade radio and it's now a super classified cia device thread closed
Oh and the screen has that fluid tactile thing that's been prototyped, where the screen can actually form bumps and buttons and stuff
I almost want to add some wheels and a retractable rotor and make it capable of driving and flying back to you if lost but that's probably a 100pin add on
Also give this thing a super vibrator like in the it crowd but capable of being set much lower

The 'OrangePhone'
Here's mine:
Nvidia Tegra 3 Processor
1GB RAM
4.7" 1080p Super AmoLED Screen with Gorilla Glass
Android 4.2 (Stock)
12MP Back Camera with 1080p video
2MP Front Camera with 480p video
WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC, Notification Light, GPS
And a design like a Nexus 4!
e-ink and battery
The best will be smartphone with 2 screen - 1 standard and second e-ink. Reading e-books on classic lcd is very tiring and battery killer. All simple things I could do on e-ink.
And when will be made baterry that can work 2 weeks without charge? Battery is weak link of smartphones...
Any Jelly bean android phone with a battery life of 4 or more days
A phone with a 4 inch screen, its outside would be made by carbon fiber. It would have 4 cores, 2 ghz, 6gb ram, dual boot(android and windows pc version)... It would be controlled by mind u wouldnt have to touch it. It would have 200 mpixels as the 1st camera and 20 on the secondary. Battery would last for about a week with hard core gaming, and it would be even tougher than nokia 3310
i must be aware of not falling asleep reading these features. I want a fullHD mirasol display with neonode touchsceen and fullHD microvision laserprjector...and of course open source...sw is enough
A phone that walks itself to the electric point, gets itself plugged in and charged when battery is low..
A nexus phone made by HTC,with sound boost speakers, 5 ultrapixels camera(bigger than 4 both in resolution and size),removable battery,64gb option,sd card slot,3 buttons layout, same screen as on htc one,a 4000mah battery

Ultimate is something like the last one.
Since releasing of smartphone is not ultimate.
So if there any last smartphone(no chance)then that would be my ultimate Smartphone(no chance)
Something like:
4.8 inch screen
battery life for heavily use - 16 hours!!!!
6GB RAM - the more RAM is better
1080P resolution with 500 PPI
Included FM radio
Great audio quality!!!!!
Great photos quality!
Quad Cores and lighting fast performance!
For now u have smartphone of these features, but no ram of "16 GB"
