[Q] Is the phone broke down faster with OC? - Galaxy 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello. I have got Galaxy3 with Kyrillos ROM v9.4 non-OC. Yesterday I installed G3MOD v2.3 OC kernel. I set CPU (in setCPU) frequency for 1200MHz and CPU has got 35 Celsius Degree in game (eg Burn the Rope, Angry Birds) and about 29 Celsius Degree in Opera Mini.
Is it harmful for CPU or phone?
Will my phone broke down faster than phone with CPU freq at 667MHz?
What is safe temperature for CPU in Galaxy3?
Thank for any help.
mosak

Yes it will. But don't worry by that time you would have changed your phone. These chips are made to last at least five yrs. Bottom line: don't worry abt of, I use it all the time
Cheers
Sent from my i9003 powered by Poseidon's Rom/Dxkp9 Junior + UC kernel

you should keep the temperature below 30 degrees
I use oc at 800hz and it's really fast, but if you need more don't abuse on time with high frequencies

Same for me, I use on a daily basis OC from 83 to 800 in lagfree
and i don't feel a big difference when i OC to 1000, but I don't play games a lot, and the games I play generaly don't need a big cpu...
you can find some tips to set your cpu
here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13355368
and here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1322607
and here is the topic about overclocking: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1266712&highlight=cpu+oc

So you would recommend using oc ROM? I am I
Using non-OC kyrillos 9.4 and It seems pretty fast to me. How much would I Get with settings to 1000 mhz?
And what about battery consumption on 1000 mhz?
Sent from my GT-I5800 using XDA App

i haven't noticed significant change to battery life between non-oc and oc. although i generally keep my governor as conservative although on kyrillos ROM is set to on demand as standard and before i changed didn't see change in battery performance.

well i ve been using OC kernel for a long time...and it has not affected my phone in any bad way...it improves the performance....maybe u need to set sum profiles in setcpu....but all i can say that it doesnt affect the phone that much in my opinion but may eat up the battery....so better set the setcpu profiles

OC: Lagsfree, but shortens cpu's life...
Non-OC: Laggy, but save battery...

[Q] SetCPU vs. Voltage Control, and what are some recommended settings?

My understanding is most people prefer Voltage Control, but SetCPU allows for specific under/overclocking profiles that can increase performance without killing battery life.
If someone could direct me to popular, trusted settings, I'd appreciate it. I'm not a heavy user or power user, so I'm looking for something that just works well. I don't care about benchmarks and things of that nature.
I'm sure this has been discussed, but I was unable to find posts that didn't concern user-specific issues.
Thanks,
Wyatt

GOOD LUCK!
ps... have been very stable with OC'd to 1.4
-25 down too 200
-100 on 100
bfq and conservative
I use VControl myself...i like the UI.
For Performance: 100-1.4GHZ (1.5 works too, but is WAY overvolted, and 1.6 is extremely unstable), -100mV from 100-1000 MHZ, -75 for 1.1-1.4GHZ.
For "Battery Life": (i really don't see a difference...) 100-800 MHZ (anything below 800 is painfully slow), -100mV across the board.
I leave schedulers and governors at their stock settings, the only time I change anything is to set the gov. to Performance on Performance for max Quadrant scores.

How many Mhz levels are you selecting? In my experience anything above 5 and it WILL NOT clock up to the higher settings. Maybe thats why you notice no difference in battery life?
For instance if you had say 100, 200, 400, 800, 1000 and 1400 you will reace 1000mhz only
if you had 100, 200, 400, 800, 1400 you would reach the 1400mhz. ive tried many combos and 5 or less was the max it would use (voltage control app, im sure setcpu would most likely be the same)
How many slots does the imnuts kernel support?

I started using SetCPU, and I think I prefer it.
Quick question, it seems like rebooting is unnecessary for the changes to take effect, is that true?
Overclocking definitely worked. I got 1853 @ 1200mhz in Quadrant, up from 1600.
Edit: now 2025 @ 1300mhz / 1300mhv
2nd Edit: Late last night, I was using a stability test in one of the apps, but I can't for the life of me remember which app or how I found it. Now I'm using StabilityTest from the market. What's a safe cpu temp for these phones? I'm getting 32 degrees under full load in an air conditioned environment.

I just switched over to Setcpu as well. It seems to work better for me also. I can now select 6 levels instead of the 5 before in voltage control and I also noticed that the set on boot on voltage control did NOT work but it DOES work in setcpu!! Im happy!
Haven't tried Setcpu yet, but I preferred Pimp my CPU over VC when I was using Miui on the Fascinate.

[Q] My device keeps powering off when the I put the screen to sleep.

For some reason since this morning after a full night of charging everytime my screen goes to sleep or I pus the power button to put the screen to sleep the device completely powers off. Last night I did flash infusion to oc/uv but had several issues and just kept the the device clocked at 12k and did slight uv. Im using setcpu and have a profile setup for screen off but I disabled in hopes to remedy the total poweroff. Any suggestions? How can infusion be removed?

Question about uv. is less best ie -25? and what does disabling the various clock speeds do?
Try using setcpu to throttle your frequencies. If you're having sod that usually means your phone isn't getting the required voltage for your CPU and you're choking your phone.. See if you can set it at 1200mhz and 800mhz on performance mode and see where that leads you.
Thanks I will give that a try. to oc really isn't my goal just to improve battery life. Right now seems to be working ok @12k with frequency uv @75-50

SoD actually usually happens at lower frequencies - after all the phone tends to stay down there when the screen is off.
Typically SoD results from too much UV from 100-400. I never was able to go more than -50 mV undervolt, others hit -100.
netarchy's Gingerbread OC config is a bit different, instead of setting modifiers from stock you set absolute voltages. (No binaries have been released of his kernel until more testing is done - but the source is out there!)
You guys are great everyday i just read and read and im amazed by the information and knowledge passed on. I learn something new every few pages. As for my oc/uv prob i've stuck to minimal uv with no oc and screen off profile and everything is working aok i did switch to the b version of infusion so so far so good. Ive read 28 pages today on the new infusion v2b2 for gb and that will be my next conquest. To all thanks a bunch and continue to the good work and especially helping out the new guys like me. sounds a bit like unhelpfuls kernel from the eclair captivate days. he had absolute voltage values and other freatures. will the gpu clock be configurable? that would be awesome. under clocking the gpu and agressive uv and ucing the cpu could add hours to the battery life. with 2.3.3 you could set the phone to 800mhz and the gpu to 182 or 166mhz could probably give little negative performance in every day use with exceptional battery life.
to the op:
sod can be a problem especially if you overclock. it seems the cpu doesnt like rapid voltage changes. i can uv -200 acriss the board if i dont overclock. if i do im at -150. the 200mhz clock is almost never used but i find if i disable it im more prone to sod presumably because the voltage and frequency jump to 400mhz is too great. it can help if the 100mhz-200mhz clocks have less uv than 400. if you loose stability on 1200 at -100 then maybe set all clocks to -75 cept 100-200mhz which you may set to -50.
this isnt a rule though. you might be able to uv 400-1000 settings quite a bit more than the 1200 setting just if you have sleep of death you generally dont want agressive settings on the 100-200mhz.

Not a clue - I only know what netarchy has done, not what he plans on doing.
The architecture of voltage/CPU frequency control is significantly different in GB kernels than Froyo. In general it's cleaner, so a lot of the issues with rapid frequency changes might go away in GB. For example, there's some code in the base kernel that's supposed to facilitate rapid voltage changes (not exactly sure how... the only documentation people outside of Samsung have for the MAX8998 is kernel source code.)
Well guys I have some news. I continued use with set cpu no oc just uv on freq above 624 @ -75 and I kept my screen off profile set to 644 max powersave scaling, and my battery life has been outstanding i check emails frequently been texting all morning and playing wwf and im @ 70% after 4 hrs of use. I know I read % doesn't mean much compared to some volts ratio but I think this is worth mentioning. And for my purposes the goal has been achieved in extending battery life and still having exceptional performance.
Oh and I wanted to add that my phone recharges much faster especially with the screen off with these setting. Maybe nothing new to you but def a plus for a(us) neewb's reading.

[Q] Overlocking Values in SetCPU?

I have at max: 1200 MHz ,at min 83 and in typeerformance, are these values corecct or wrong for a custom rom?
-Greeting-
PD:Andro's Rom (3 days for release)
Yes, or no, because you need a screen off profile or your battery life will be damn short.
I think this should be in the general section and i recommend using the conservative governor over the performance since conservative goes to the minimum frequency when phone is not being used i.e. when screen is off. This is best for performance since it automatically goes to the maximum frequency when screen is on and when screen is off it goes to the minimum which is good for battery.
1200 is too high....
It will damage your battery....
I use 100 MHz to 800 MHz....
Its average and most of the users use the same....

That frecuency will eat your battery.
I use my SetCPU at frecuencies 400-800Mhz, and use profiles for screen off (83-400Mhz), battery <20% (200-600Mhz), time (2am-6am) (83-83Mhz powersave)
always on demand (except time profile)
Greetings
My config is
Main 400-800 Mhz Ondemand Set on boot
Profiles
Temp >45°C 200-500 Mhz priority 100 Ondemand
time 2am-6am 83-83 Mhz priority 95 powesave
screen off 83-500 Mhz priority 90 Ondemand
Battery <20% 200-600 Mhz priority 80 Ondemand
I have g3mod 2.0 OC kernel
Greetings
I just use basic settings, no profiles or anything. Look in my signature.
I may add a few profiles after my lil bro is finished playing games on my phone.
My battery temp is 39 degrees Celsius is it that a good tempeture?
anything between 83 and 800 would work like charm and enough for day to day tasks..use conservative governor..set profile for screen off and on call..

Okay look....
Overclocking is both safe and dangerous....
If you keep your phone overclocked at a high frequency all the time then it will cause damage to the CPU and the battery life....
But 800 MHz if fairly enough and should not cause any damage.
Even I keep my phone at 800 MHz all the time....
Regarding the best ROM, just check out the development section and find the ROM that matches your needs....
thanks you i think it is good enough to overclock but it must be for your daily work if you want read book than make the cpu speed in 500 if want to play games make it in 800 but i think the battery life will be very bad what you think i must do to keep my life battery up every time ?

[Q] How do I use no frill CPU?

I want to overclock my phone. I have doom kernel v14 installed. I installed no frill CPU on my phone. The min frequency I seleted was at 300 MHz (approx) and the max was 1.4 GHz (approx). Does this mean that the phone will automatically go between these values if I run a heavy app (eg GTA 3)? And what does the 'governor' and 'i/o schedular' mean and what does it do? My current settings are :
sio - I/o schedular
Performance - govenor
Min - 245
Max - 1.2 Ghz
Governor : Smartass v2
Mine is like this.
and what about the i/o scheduler? And what does govenor and i/o scheduler mean?
I'm also on Doomkernel v14 and my battery is draining so quicky. Its dropping 5% every 10minutes even when I'm using any light application. I have SetCPU and my sttings are Max 1401MHz and Min 134MHz with smartassV2 and deadline. Although speed is amazing but battery performance is terrible.

Performance governor is a "special" one in that it goes to the max. clock speed, and never uses the min., or any frequency in between. You can do that if you want to do benchmarking reliably, but I'm not sure it's good for battery life.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1663809
^ That page explains all the governors, but from what I can tell from using Cool Tool onscreen system info app, "lagfree" on Doomkernel seems to be a higher performance governor like you'd expect from the name and not how he or she describes: it seems to scale down only quite slowly from a high clock, I'm guessing to eliminate any possible lag while scrolling the interface that might result if it scaled down quicker. And we don't have anything relating to multiple cores
Anyway, I think I saw you say you were on JokaWild as well. Looking at the Joka init.d scripts the SmartAssV2 parameters are tweaked towards performance and it comes as the default for the rom, so maybe try that as a more balanced option than Performance governor.
Another CPU governor and I/O scheduler mega-thread

I wondered as well if v14 was not as good as v13 3013 for battery life, but better for performance, but 5% in 10 minutes is a lot. Have you tried using the BetterBatteryStats app to find an explanation? Has it got better just through subsequent use / recharging?
Battery life really sucks on jokawild (actually in all CustomRoms).
