[Q] Signal Problem - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an interesting issue. When i restart my phone, i get no signal, but when i turn to airplane mode and than normal mode again, i get signal. Every restart, it repeats. What's the matter with my phone?
(Nexus S with NexusBeam)

Maybe add a power widget on your screen and see if its connected to the mobile network after boot up..

Phone recognizes my service provider but as i said no signal. I am really unfamiliar to android i get phone 3 months ago somehow i managed to root Actually its very long story. On stock room there was no stock a problem like that. I flashed to NexusBeam first but i didnt like ICS so i decided to turn Gingerbread 2.3.6. I managed to turn stock rom BUT there was no signal like that. I did not come up with idea like turning phone to airplane mode that time. I flashed to NexusBeam again and it worked well. But after several restarts, i got same problem.
To sum up i doubt that i made something wrong Might it be efs or something like that?

When you flashed the different roms, did you wipe dalvik cache more then once?? If I were you, I'd back up everything with titanium backup then do a master reset... wipe the data and the dalvik like 3 times over!

[Q] flash question

I have flashed to froyo and now back to stock. Question is both times I flashed some of my info on the sd card was still there i.e. movies, and music. Isn't it supposed to clear out everything? My apps and contacts were gone. The reason I am wondering is now (past 4 days) since flashing back to stock the phone has been dropping Wi-Fi in my house after sitting for a period of time (about 15 min) when I pick the phone up it shows that it uploading and downloading on 3g. Then when I unlock the phone it picks up my Wi-Fi immediately. Maybe it left some files behind? Also I received a text message about an update but after download it fails at 50% every time. I have also tried a manual update with the same results. Any ideas? I might send the phone back and get it replaced. I am still within my 30 days. It really makes me mad about dropping Wi-Fi when idling. Over the last 4 days my data use has been outrageous. I have the lowest plan because I am always around a Wi-Fi connection. Plus my GPS won’t lock at all. I was going to try and get lucky with another phone. I am using Odin to flash. When I do a master clear in Odin nothing happens. If I just click start it flashes fine. Would it be ok to send it back in its current state? This is what my phone info reads.
firware version 2.1 update 1
baseband version 1897ucjf6
kernel version 2.6.29 jetaek.lee sep-11 #2
build number eclair
To fix your wifi problem go into your wifi settings & hit the menue button & select advanced & set your wifi sleep policy to never (remember to turn off wifi when your done or you'll get horrible battery life) & as for the other stuff your in the same boat as all of us still waiting for a update that will actually fix gps don't worry about JH7 it doesn't fix anything & just causes more problems. & reflashing doesn't always wipe the /sdcard partition this is a good thing. & shouldn't be causing you any problems. Just wait for the official froyo or use a better 2.1 rom like cognition with unhelpful's oc kernel for now. If your going to stay with att then this is as good as it's gona get for a while.

Updates 50%
Thanks for the help! I didn't even know there was a sleep setting. Do you have any ideas why my updates are getting to 50% on the boot screen then failing?
When flashing with one click Odin, I would recommend to use the Master Clear before doing the rom flash. To Master clear, put the phone in USB debugging mode and connect. Odin should see the phone as a com port. Just remember to backup anything you want saved first. This is like doing a factory reset, it wipes all your info which may be causing your troubles.

Not Registered on netword

Hi
i have installed this awesome rom "Updated 3June12 [ROM][2.3.7][CWM] HebrewValhalla V3.4"
The word smooth has a sense
I have a signal issue.
when i go to an elevator without signal, the signal don't come back.
I have some bars in the signal bar but when i tried to call, i am getting Not Registered on network
it's not a sim issue, i have already replaced it.
Any ideas?
Did you try a reset and full wipe?
Your phone is picking up another network. Used to happen to me all the time. ATT has a stronger signal where I live and my phone would lock onto it for hours at a time. Didn't matter if I manually selected the carrier or not. After hours on the phone with Tmob they finally let me out of my contract.

If you were on a contract plan shouldnt it pick up the att towers as "roaming" since your t-mo towers werent as powerful?
If that is whats happening it explains why I cant get service in walmart. Im on the prepaid plan so no roaming for me.
No roaming agreement between ATT and Tmob at the time. It was right when the merger was being proposed. I confirmed it with Samsung as well. The device will look for the stronger network and try to connect to that. The crappy thing was you couldn't override it. I'd force Tmob as network and as soon as it dropped signal it would revert back to ATT.
Did you try flashing another modem? This ROM comes with sidekick KD1 modem. Some people prefer our native KI3, KJ1, KG4 or KJ6 modem.
I would also try to disable roaming option abd force a network.

Hi
Thanks for your answers
First, i am is israel. i am subscribed to the orange carrier
i have tried the wipe, the fix permission, the clean dalvik cache
i will follow your advice. i am flashing the Kj6
wait and see
If nothing else, one thing that works for me when I completely lose my network is to do a hard reset: Pull the battery, hold power button for 15 seconds, leave battery out for 10 minutes, put battery back in, boot and let sit another 10 minutes. Fixed.
Haven't had the issue on a bml ROM though(such as Valhalla), not sure if it's coincidence, but if all else falls, hopefully it will help you solve the issue. I tried flashing new modems, permissions, wipes, formats, flashing new ROM's, and that was the only thing to actually restore the network (restoring my efs may have worked, but didn't try it then, and that would only be applicable to an mtd ROM, unlike Valhalla)

Also try to switch it to GSM only, it might work.
when am selecting only GSM, the 3G don't work. i only get the G
BTW, each time that i restart the phone, i have to enable the GSM/WDCA.
after each restart, the phone is automatically configured to only GSM
Hi Guys
i am driving crazy
I have followed all those steps
1. Put ROM zip in SDcard.
2. Go to recovery mode.
3. Perform Wipe cache partition (3 times).
4. Perform Wipe data\Factory reset (3 times).
5. Perform Advanced -> Wipe dalvik cache (3 times).
6. Perform Voodoo -> Disable Lagfix.
7. Perform Voodoo -> System Lagfix Off.
8. Perform Install zip file - choose Hebrew valhall 3.5ROM zip.
9. Allow ROM to start, mount mount points, flash kernel and finish.
10. Go to 'Voodoo Settings'.
11.Perform Voodoo -> Enable Lagfix.
12.Perform Voodoo -> System Lagfix On.
13.Perform Back - Reboot System.
14. Let device stay untouched for 10 minutes.
Now i have another issue, each time that i restart the phone, i have to enable the GSM/WDCA.
when only GSM is selected, the 3G don't work. i only get the G
after each restart, the phone is automatically configured to only GSM.
Moreover, i don't have the standard gps issue of long lock.
( i have made the AngryGps Fix)
when i am using Waze, i am losing the Gps Signal
SOS
G.
G.
RESOLVED
i have enabled bluetooth wifi, Gps and restart the phone
and the issue is fixed
Is "netword" a new game like Scrabble or something?
Hi Heniki
I was on Israeli Orange and everything worked just fine. Now I'm on Rami Levi just paying 75% less..
Anyway, I suggest :
1. Try the Gremlin remover.
2. Re-flash ROM afterwards (try other ROMs if you must).
3. Check if your SIM is OK (try it with other SIMs).
4. Maybe SDCard is causing problems ?
The only problem I ever had with connectivity is that sometimes WiFi/3G/BT didn't want to start and the workaround I found at that time was :
1. Set 3G and BT on and restart the device.
2. Once device is up, turn BT off and 5 seconds later, turn 3G off.
3. If you want Wifi - just turn it on.
If you want BT - turn Wifi on, wait 5 sec, turn BT on. wait till it's up and turn Wifi off if you don't want it. Once you're done with BT, turn Wifi on - turn BT off and then Wifi Off.
4. If 3G/Wifi don't turn on, leave it on, set flight mode, wait 10 sec, then set flight mode off. It will work.
I don't have these issues lately (I'm on AntonX's 1.1.2 kernel).
If you must have a Hebrew ROM, know that I will publish a Hebrew CM7 and Hebrew MIUI next month.

Another Wifi Problem P6210 (SOLVED)

Two days ago, my device suddenly could not connect to any wifi anywhere, encrypted or not, WEP nor WPA. This began to happen after I did a backup though CWM.
It sees networks but continuously runs through a scanning, connect, disconnect, scanning cycle. It tries to set the IP from the network, but then flashes unsuccessful and starts scanning again and repeats the process, and in the list of available networks, all available networks cycle between being not in range, remembered or disabled.
Sometimes wifi networks are greyed out, sometimes, not. Sometimes it cannot even find my router, even if I place the Tab on top of it. It connects once in a while, randomly, but only holds the connection for a few minutes.
I have other wifi tablets and all can connect to my wifi, nothing has changed with my wifi settings, router, etc. But to make sure, I did cycle the modem and router on and off and even reset the Airport Extreme that I use to factory settings. Modem is new and Airport Extreme is only a couple of months old.
My Tab is rooted and running stock HC. Never been dropped, great condition, never exposed to shocks, water, etc.
I have tried the following fixes:
Restored to factory settings, wipe data, etc. Nothing. I have tried this several times.
I have tried setting a static IP address. Nope.
ODINed it back to stock using P6210XARKL1_P6210UEKL1_HOME.tar.md5. It briefly connects to wifi long enough to apply the update and after that, it starts cycling scanning, connecting, disconnecting, etc. Tried this several times as well.
I even tried the update to the UK ICS for the P6210 and have the same problem. It sees wifi, but cannot connect, and on occasion it cannot see any wifi at all, even when I am 2 feet away from the router.
At this point I am convinced that it is a hardware issue (either that or it is pouting because there is a new Nexus 7 in the house)
Anyone have any other suggestions for a fix?
Update:
I did another hard reset from within Settings-->Storage--> Factory Data Reset, rather than through recovery (either stock recovery or CWM) as I had done before.
Now, wifi connects a little more consistently. Would resetting that way actually make a difference? Or is this just a random thing? Am I trying to see a logic where none exists?
How would a hard reset through the system settings be any different than one through recovery? Or, does each reset clear something else that got corrupted along the way?
My wifi still randomly cycles through scanning, connecting, disconnected, just as before. However, now the connection is actually made more quickly (under a minute when before it could take up to 15 minutes - or just never connect) and seems to remain connected for longer periods of time now.
Well, after searching and reading through 100s of similar issues one of the workarounds is to use a wifi widget or a WiFi Fixer App.
I am using a widget to control wifi and it along with any other random thing I might try can occasionally make my Tab connect to my Wifi network.

Persistence = Profit.
I think I have finally solved the broken wifi issue. Just to recap, the problem started after I did a backup with garyd9's CWM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1379532.
And as a last ditch effort I even tried toggling the wifi on/off with a widget as was suggested from other sources (Google is your friend), in addition to factory restores, or restoring from a CWM backup, etc. And that was not a reliable solution after all.
These are the steps I took.
Through stock recovery, I wiped data and cache, and did a factory restore, twice.
I ODINed back to stock, again.
Wiped data and cache and did a factory restore.
Wifi was still sluggish to connect, but finally I was able to load the update.
Then I wiped data and cache and did a factory restore again.
It has been 24 hours and I still have a strong wifi connection. If I power my Tab off and wait an hour or two, then reboot it connects immediately to wifi. If I toggle wifi on/off it still makes an immediate connection. YAY!
So, it seems that something got corrupted during the initial CWM backup and then persisted through many wipes and reinstalls.
UPDATE:
Still have working wifi!
I'm having the same problem now. I'm using latest CM9.
I was using Google Chrome just fine when suddenly Wifi disconnected for no apparent reason and it's now showing the same symptoms you described in the first post. I have formatted cache and cleared dalvik cache and it didn't work. Wiped everything and it didn't work. Reflashed CM9 and tried two different Wifi fix flashable ZIPs but I still got the problem. I'm wiping everything and reflashing CM9 once again.
Is someone else experiencing this?
I'm afraid to data wipe in stock recovery due to the brick bug reported (my tab uses one of the defective chips).
How is your Wifi holding up, VitaZora?
I hope persistance pays off.

My Tab also has the defective chip, but I didn't know that until AFTER I went through all those wipes and reinstalls.
But I can report that all is well and wifi is still working like a charm.

Ohhh I see...
I did wipe in HC stock recovery several times, but not in ICS stock recovery.
Have you wiped in ICS stock recovery? By selecting "Factory default" option from config menu or by manually going to recovery and selecting data wipe? Or both? Hahaha
Thank you for the reply!

Honestly, I can't remember. I know I flashed ICS twice as well as the CM9 version for our Tab.
I think the order for flashing from rooted HC was the following:
ICS, CM9, HC, HC, HC, ICS, HC.
In between each was either factory restore from the config menu or through recovery. Occasionally after flashing my device back to stock, it would go into a reboot loop and the only way to fix that was to enter recovery and wipe everything. But I reflashed so many times and tried wiping and factory restores multiple times as well, that I may have wiped ICS through recovery - in fact I am sure I did at least once.
Oh well, I guess I live dangerously.

[Q] data dissappears after restart

Ok here is the problem... I rooted the phone, played with some settings, explored the android platform in general. Somehow, my data has stopped working. I can make calls and send texts no problem, when I try to access internet or google play store, it fells me that I have no data connection available or something of the sort. I have tried flashing different roms, played around with switching between Global and Lte/cdma radio bands. When I switch bands, I get either 4g or 3g, but within half hour it stops working again. After a restart, same thing happens, it worka and then atops. I figure there is something messed up with the modem. Please advise.
Also, anyone else experiencing sudden restarts with CleanRom 5.0? My phone reboots every once in a while for no apparent reason.

Pick the latest from the right column and flash in recovery as you would a ROM.

Looked into it a bit more.... my 4g or 3g works after a restart as long as there is a demand for it, ex. While surfing or streaming radio, as soon as there is no demand, the phone shuts it off and I can't turn it back on. It tells me no signal found for mobile networks. While voice and mssg still work. I refreshed the modem and that didn't help. Short of going back to stock, any other suggestions?

[Q] Stuck on WiFi Turning on
Hello,
I've seen this issue with various phones and various fixes... But I don't want to Hi-Jack anyone or anything. Anyway, I tried the dev build of "L" at one point... and my WiFi randomly stopped working. I thought "welp, it's a dev build... not gonna sweat it" and went back to stock 4.4.4... flashed back to factory, no dice. It seemed to turn on long enough during the setup process to "connect" but it disappeared when I rebooted to go to ART. Thought, welp, no experimental anything. Flashed back to factory, no WiFi. Not even during setup. Tried the various things I've seen around... obviously various factory resets, tried rooting and renaming wpa_supplicant.conf, flashed paranoid android because someone said that's the only thing that worked... it didn't. I do notice the kernel seems to be the same for PA and 4.4.4, so I could try another kernel, but have no idea which to try. After I put TWRP on, I cleared every cache, etc I could. Flashed back to stock after clearing system and no dice, tried running wifi fixer, tried installing macman... nothing. I did see someone say if the phone gets too hot, the WiFi chipset can come off, but the WiFi chip-set is the same as Bluetooth, and that's having no problems. I appreciate any suggestions, I really want this to work out. Otherwise I have a year with a phone with no WiFi... To kind of clarify (re-reading, I see I wasn't too clear about the actual problem), the WiFi toggle switch is set to "Off" and where your networks would display it shows "Turning on WiFi". This isn't just one network acting up, and this has been going on for a couple of weeks.
Edited to add: when I unlocked the bootloader today, the setup process showed me my networks but settings froze when I put the password in... so the hardware seems to be connected...
