School wifi problem

Just got my Samsung Captivate about a month and I got my wifi connected to the school network, but when i open the broswer or any apps need internet i didnt get any connections? at the first week it works.. and when connecting to the school wifi it should be come out with the school login page,, then the internet will work.. however the wifi is connected doesnt matter how strong the wifi singal is.. it just cant load and cant bring me to the login page..
I really need help..
and the wifi works everywhere.. except my school...
btw my friends iphone 3gs works..

I am also at college and have had the same problem. the best reason I have found is the phone itself. half of our wifi is an older standard that does not work on the phone. it shows up as wep and i can not get it to recognize it as 802.1x . in my tinkering I have also messed up the wifi that was working.
long story short it probably won't work. I have spent a long time trying to get it to work with no luck

Hello to both of you,
I also attend a college with an 802.1x connection and the captivate supports most of these networks; however you will probably need to configure the network settings manually (usually retrievable on your schools IT site). If you dont mind digging up your settings I would love to check to see if I can configure your phone.

I definitely had this problem today. It appeared connected but no web pages would load. Going to have to investigate further. Why can't things just work

I know my school recently implemented some new security certificates that you must agree to before logging in, has anything like that changed for you? My wife's Aria is running 2.2 and can log into the school network, but my captivate cannot. It is frustrating I know.

Seems some colleges and universities are noticing issues with android devices letting the DHCP leases to expire but keeps using the IP address assigned instead of requesting a new one.

I actually have similar issues with my Belkin wireless router at home. My laptops and other wireless devices have no problems connecting or re-connecting but the Captivate just refuses to re-connect after the connection was terminated. Even after resetting the router, the phone just keeps trying to use the same IP address for some reason.
The only way I could get it to reconnect is to either reboot the phone or to remove the AP entry which is a pain especially if you have wireless passwords.
Hopefully someone with better insight into how Eclair and Froyo handles WiFi can come up with some fix.

I believe the new 2.2 firmware solves this issue. I too am at College and my captivate FAILS to actually access the internet through wifi unless I statically assigned the IP.
I just updated to Froyo and it connected instantly. I'll have to do more testing to make sure, but I think Samsung finally fixed it.

captivate wifi issue at school
i just got Galaxy S (Captivate) and wi-fi is giving trouble.
when i tried at a university campus, it gives error and says can't open and try again later. it is like, i get connected to the network, IP and DNS and everything is generated. But when i open browser to open a website, instead of taking me to login page it gives the above error.
here is what i get when i try to open a website.
'web page not available'. the page might be temporarily down or it may have been moved permanently to new address.
here are some suggestions:
- check to make sure device has signal and data connection. (I made sure it is connected to wifi)
- reload page later. (i tried after 5 mins, same result)
- view cached copy from google. (doesn't work either)
i am not able to understand why is this happening. i tried restarting the phone after connecting to wifi but no luck. any pointers?

Sounds like they use a portal system which requires logon and doesn't play nice with the Captivate's browser. Unfortunately many such portal systems are written poorly and I've even seen some that only work with Internet Explorer.
You could try a different browser on the Captivate. Dolphin allows spoofing assorted User Agents, which might help.

Hey guys, I have the same problem connecting to m school's network login page. It would say connected but the website always says cant be found. But the good news is that I found a way to connect to it manually! What you need is your captivate and friends iphone 4 or 3gs. First have use your friends iphone to connect to the wifi and then go into wifi settings. You should see 2 DNS address, Ip address, netmask (subnet mask) and router address. Now jot those addresses down except the ip address. Go to settings->wireless and network->Wi-Fi settings->now tap the bottom left button under the samsung logo and click advanced. Now check use static ip. Do not enter anything for your ip address just yet (we will do this last). Now enter router address into gateway, subnet mask into netmask, DNS1 to DNS1 and DNS2 to DNS2. ok when you are done click back and tap the network you want to connect to. Once you are connected jot down your ip address by taping the network once more. now go back to where the static ip was and input the ip address you just jot down into the ip address underneath use static ip. Disconnect and reconnect to the desired network. You may have to do this a few times or reboot your phone. This has been working for me so far around different buildings but with the same school network connection. I hope this helps cheers!

Yeah, my school uses the Bradford dissovable agent. Funny thing is, some connections work perfectly, others not at all. Technically none should work, and sometimes I feel that maybe I should tell them that sometimes somehow it is possible to bypass the whole agent thing- but why rock the boat just yet

Does it need a proxy to work? If so, this app is amazing.

I figured it out a month ago, and it is actually petty easy. But you really have to change ip address manually, usually just the last number.

Can't connect to internet even though connected to router

hi i am in need of a lot of help here. on sunday i decided to search something on the internet and i kept getting web page not available on every page i went on... the thing is according to my phone it was connected to my router and was displaying a wifi signal bars and everything.. all my other devices are working as usual but on my phone it will connect the internet will work for a minute or two then i wont be able to connect again till i reboot my phone.
any info would be appreciated.

What router are you using? Sounds like a router issue to me.
First thing to try is always a router power cycle. They can occasionally go nuts. Unplug for 30 seconds.
Second thing to try, log onto your router, and see what wifi protocols are set to. If it's set to B/G/N combined, try setting to G/N. (assuming you are not using B anymore!) If not using B or N, set it to G.
Third thing to try, disable Wireless Multimedia Extensions (WMM). Not sure where it'll be in you're router.

You might not picking up gateway information from the router. The solution could be to configure a static IP address instead of using DHCP.
To do this do the following:
Go into Settings, then ‘Wireless & networks’ then ‘Wi-Fi settings’ then press 'menu' and select 'advanced', scroll down and select the 'static ip' box.
In the ‘IP address’ box enter the same IP address which is shown higher up the same form.
In the ‘Gateway’ box you will need to put the IP address of your router. To find this out I opened a command prompt window on a PC on the same network and typed ipconfig. This will give you a Default gateway address which is what you need.
In the the ‘Network prefix length’ box put 24 (this assumes the subnet mask from ipconfig is 255.255.255.0)
Finally in the DNS 1 box put the same IP you put in the Gateway box.
Now click Save, disconnect and reconnect from the network and when you are reconnected you should have internet access.

Erm, guys - you jumped in at the deep end, surely a restart is the first thing that should be tried.
A) Restart router
B) If not fixed, restart phone
C) Do what the above say

i have already done a power cycle on my phone and router..
i tried to set up astatic ip but now whenever i try to connect it says disconnected after trying to obtain ip address
help please....excuse my ignorance if i missed anyhting

What happened to WPS?

It seems to have vanished in ICS. How do you connect to a you password protected home router? With gingerbread, I would use the wps button connection to connect automatically but I see no such configuration in wifi settings in ics.

You have never used wps or other easy wireless configuration? I had it on my phone with gingerbread but lost it with ics.

Most people prefer a more secure wifi access method.

It seems most people here have difficulty identifying the question asked by the OP.

The OP is referring to Wifi Protected Setup. Yes i think it was removed.
While it certainly made wifi security easy, it is my suggestion not to use WPS as out was cracked back around December.

No it was answered in the first reply. At least the way he worded his question.
My reply was pointing out the same fact as the other poster. The fact that WPS is completely unsecured since Dec. So most people don't even try to use it hence why its not talked/cared about much.

You should setup your wireless networking gear (home router and all wifi devices) to use WPA2-PSK and a strong passphrase. When everything else is in place, you can input the same passphrase on the wifi setup dialog that shows up when you select your home network in the TF101 WiFi preferences screen.

As stated by other posters, WPS is utterly insecure and it should never ever be relied upon for proper WiFi security.
That said, I don't recall WPS ever being supported on the TF101 even under Honeycomb (I could be mistaken, though, since my WiFi network equipment doesn't support it).

I happened to be goofing off with my WiFi the other day and I saw that when you go to Settings -> WiFi -> Advanced (in the top right corner) there is in fact an option to use WPS on the tablet with ICS. Find your router name, tap on it, then a little check box with show advanced options. Select WPS and choose button. Then hit the button on the router. Worked for me just fine.

May I ask why WPS is so insecure? My router has a WPA2 protected SSID, but I used wps to setup my wireless printer. It seems to only be" insecure" when it's enabled and looking for a device, which is timed to be on for no more than 2 minutes. I don't think vultures are waiting for those two minutes to connect to your router. Or is there another danger?

WPS is NOT a replacement of WPA it's not a security feature at all!
if you have WPS on ON ROUTER you still need to choose open/wep/wpa/wpa2
as the name could suggest, S stands for Setup and that's what it is. WPS will connect you without need to search for the network in the list of available networks, or even knowing the network name and if there is password, it will fill it in for you. it's an easy setup where you don't need to know password or the name of the wifi network you are connecting to.
another thing. you can't talk about vulnerability in reference to the wifi client - phone. it's the router which is vulnerable. If your car has weak remote central locking, throwing away your remote key transmitter will not make it much safer.
saying ICS doesn't have WPS because it's hackable is wrong. if a coffee place desides to use WPS their net is hackable, it's their concern. I still want to be able to use it as this safety issue doesn't affect me as a wifi client.
and thought ICS has this complicated way to get to the WPS, it's missing the point of WPS as you need to know which wifi you are connecting to, and click many times to get to the option. not easy setup at all. and the indicator of WPS availability is missing too. If I came to a coffee place and saw the icon I told them to keep their password and push the button instead. now I don't know if they have WPS.
So there is still an issue.
But maybe the ICS phone is listening for WPS all the time I didn't test this.

if it's your network, make sure you update router to latest firmware, as this vulnerability has been already addressed in most of the routers. Or keep it OFF until they'll make update to it.
it is NOT only those two minutes after you push the WPS button, but it's hackable all the time.
WPS can be used different ways, you can enter pin of client to be allowed in into router, or pin of router into client, or just push the button and no pin at all.
so the pin works all the time, that would still be fine, but a certain template was found in those pins, which brought the possible number of choices low enough to use brutal force attack to get the correct pin. that's the safety issue. nothing to do with the phone.

I'm on an AT&T Samsung Galaxy S5 And i am rooted
I usually use his laptop when he's not around and get the password but that's not an option for the time being. Thanks in advance.
The Wifi Type is WPA2 PSK
The router is a Netgear
The modem is a Motorola
P.S. I do t have access to a computer but I do have physical access to the router and modem and I'm new to the forum please let me know if I posted this in the wrong g place.

See into wifi manager that the Router has (Wps Available)
Then there is a Solution for it...
Just Go near the Router and press the Wps Butten and Connect from mobile...
And you done

I just assume that you have multiple computers at home that are connected to your network. I've come across some programs that I used to recover our network password when I was younger, all you need is a usb drive and those programs. I believe the site was called nirsoft or something .
!!Those programs may be identified as viruses as!!

If your router DOES have WPS, then this is a good quick and clean call and should be sure to remember to click "thanks" on Xpid3r's post.
If it DOES NOT have it, then give us a little more info:
1.)when he changes it, who and what does he update other than his laptop? - sometimes people are easier to bride, sweet talk, or otherwise crack than devices... Would mom, brother, roommate, friend etc. get the updated password? If not, what other devices get updated? anywhere the password is saved is a potential entry point. For example, if YOU were keeping the password from HIM... Then he could get it from your galaxy s5 NOTE:I can't post a link, because I'm new here. But if you google "recover wifi password from android" there is a walktrough from hubpages that I've used
2.)Could you borrow a friend's laptop to hack the password? - If so, there are plenty of tutorials around for that (though admittedly that is not a SHORT learning curve)
3.)How visible is the router? I rented a room once and shared Wifi was supposed to be included in the rent. The landlord was a real tool though and, among other issues, he wouldn't tell me the router password so I could do some port-forwarding etc. It got annoying very fast. But he had his router hidden away for aesthetics. So I connected my own router (from my last place) to one of his router's wired ports and then had my own wireless network through the house with its own SSID. I lived there 4 more months and he never noticed it. If your dad's router is tucked away you could probably do the same. Or if you cannot access his laptop BECAUSE he is out of town, then it wouldn't have to be hidden. You could do that type of setup in plain sight temporarily and just take it down before he comes home and get the password from his laptop then. (Tip: if you do this disable DHCP server or YOUR router so they don't fight over who gets to assign IP addresses)

you can find the password in options of wireless networks in the father's computer. Do it when the father goes to the toilet or eat , it only takes 1 minute

Hotspot issues with Android Pie

I am having issues regarding Wifi hotspot on Pie.
1. My laptop find it very difficult to find the hotspot. Sometimes I have to restart the hotspot 2-3 times before the network shows up on my laptop. On Oreo, this was always instant and worked immediatly.
2. In the last few days using a hotspot from the phone and my laptop I have had issues regarding DNS/internet. Even though my laptop is connected to the hotspot network, it doesn't have any internet access. When browsing the web on my laptop, all DNS requests always fails. It happens whenever I try to navigate to a site and tries to ping a url from CMD. But if I try to ping a ip address, let say 1.1.1.1, that works fine! I can also use my browser on my phone without any issues at all. The laptop works fine on any other network and the phone works well on its own but the hotspot causes great problems. It sounds to me that for some reason when using a hotspot, DNS requests doesn't come through properly. Also, if I connect to a VPN on my laptop, eveything works, even DNS requests but my VPN is somewhat unreliable so it constantly disconnects so that is not a viable solution for me.
Anyone experiencing similar problems? It's really annoying because now I can't get any work done on my daily commute.

His first problem I don't have, but it's the second that's the same issue as mine.
Obviously he's never searched or he'd have found my lengthy post not very far back.
The solution is there too.
I've never tried turning the VPN on to see if I get through access to the internet that way. I can't now as I've applied the fix @jbm76 found, and I don't really want to back out the fix to try it.
Definitely an area where pie has gone backwards. For those of us affected anyway.

If you get errors at the cmd prompt make sure usb debugging is set 'on' on the phone.

I want to remember that it did work before, then I have to reflash Pie again and that's when the issues started.

I still wanted to say that I still suffering from the first problem, having difficulties actually finding the hotspot at all.

Its very odd. This problem has started to arise again. I tried running adb shell settings get global tether_dun_required again but I get the answer that it is 0 so that looks fine. I haven't updated anything since I had this problem the last time.

To provide some more info and more things to try if you are rooted (I am in the US on T-Mobile). These instructions should also help you avoid tethering detection using the standard Android tethering options if you wish to.
1) Go into settings --> system --> developer options and turn off Tethering hardware acceleration. This will make sure all tethering routing is done by Android at the software level and not by Qualcomm's chipsets (so following steps will apply).
2) As suggested, put global tether_dun_required 0. Note you can also do this from a command prompt by typing su (get root access) and typing setting put global tether_dun_required 0. What this does is route tething traffic over the same APN as phone traffic, and not the hidden tethering APN that some carriers put on the sim cards.
3) Install Change TTL and in settings set it to run a boot and set TTL to 64. This ensures that all traffic leaving your phone will have a TTL of 64 and look like it is coming from the phone. (I am pretty sure this also set's ipv6 hop limit, as TMobile in the US is all IPv6 and this hides traffic.)
Reboot. If you still have trouble -- try Android's USB option to see if it is WiFi related vs Tethering system related.
- Verify that global tether_dun_required is still 0 after reboot (it should be if you are rooted).
- Delete the WiFi entry on your computer and re-join the phone's network -- sometimes it is on your computer's side.
Another thing to try is Easy Tether -- this is a good USB tethering option that won't use Android tethering system and it is guaranteed to route traffic over the phone's network APN.
If the issue is DNS, you can isolate that by manually putting a DNS (8.8.8.8) into the tethered computer to see if that is the issue.
Also, google search xda VPN Hotspot. This app has a ton of options to change Android's tethering routing even if you are not using a VPN. This may also help you figure something out. You can activate tethering, then go in here and turn on the wlan interface and it should route traffic directly to that (which should be happening anyways because of tether_dun_required = 0).

3) Install Change TTL and in settings set it to run a boot and set TTL to 64. This ensures that all traffic leaving your phone will have a TTL of 64 and look like it is coming from the phone. (I am pretty sure this also set's ipv6 hop limit, as TMobile in the US is all IPv6 and this hides traffic.)
Reboot. If you still have trouble -- try Android's USB option to see if it is WiFi related vs Tethering system related.
- Verify that global tether_dun_required is still 0 after reboot (it should be if you are rooted).
- Delete the WiFi entry on your computer and re-join the phone's network -- sometimes it is on your computer's side.
Another thing to try is Easy Tether -- this is a good USB tethering option that won't use Android tethering system and it is guaranteed to route traffic over the phone's network APN.
If the issue is DNS, you can isolate that by manually putting a DNS (8.8.8.8) into the tethered computer to see if that is the issue.
Also, google search xda VPN Hotspot. This app has a ton of options to change Android's tethering routing even if you are not using a VPN. This may also help you figure something out. You can activate tethering, then go in here and turn on the wlan interface and it should route traffic directly to that (which should be happening anyways because of tether_dun_required = 0).

Hi and thank you for your post. It seems that windows had changed dns settings by its own to something invalid, so that is why it didn't work. However I am still having connection issues. Mainly I find it very difficult to connect my laptop (and other devices) to the hotspot of the Oneplus 6.
1) Done.
2) Done.
3) It was already set at 64 but I tried setting in to 64 again.
DUN is still 0 after reboot. I have also removed the wifi from my PC and changed name on the hotspot. Also tried both 2.4 and 5 Ghz. When the pc is connected the hotspot, I can ping google succesfully, so internet works but not DNS, all requests in my browser times out. I have also tried setting DNS to external providers in the phone (not sure if if affects the hotspot though). I looked at easy tether but root version was pretty expensive. I also googled XDA VPN Hotspot but I'm not sure which app you mean. Do you have the link?
Right now I'm just thinking of factory resetting the phone and installing the latest oxygen version (I'm still on 9.0.0.0).
Here is even more testing:
What I am experiencing is that there are grave problems trying to connect when in an area with a lot of wifi networks.
I live on the countryside and I thought I would try using hotspot for a couple of times. Thing is, at home, sharing hotspot from the phone to my laptop always works instantly, both on 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz. I might add that there are basically no wifi networks interfering where I live, except for my own. When I start my bus ride in the morning from my house to a city were I work, the hotspot usually works pretty good. But it's when I'm going home that I am start having problems. In the city, there is probably around 50-100 wifi networks when I start the ride home. And that's when it usually is impossible to connect the hotspot to the laptop. However, when leaving the city and entering the highway, it is usually easier. I have these connection problems on both 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz and if it does connect, 2.4 is hideous, it disconnects all the time.
So the conclusion for me is that it is having a very hard time connecting when there are a lot of wifi networks around. However, It never seemed to be a major problem on Oreo, only on Pie.

Seems more like WiFi / Computer related than phone. Did you try USB tethering? Is DNS get manually set in your computer by something else you installed?

USB tethering works fine, dns as well. Its just the connection, it is very difficult to connect anything to the Oneplus 6 in wifi crowded areas.

Will this effect Bluetooth tethering too? Or is there another command for that? Dang built in hot spot get horrible speed after this setting is set, at least be on T-Mobile.

I also face a strange issue, the connected devices to the hotspot it keeps disconnected after some time.. 1min, 5min, 15min...is random and annoying. Dose anyone face this issue to? Tried diferent fixes but nothing works, it remained to do a factory reset to see if the problem persist..
