It seems to have vanished in ICS. How do you connect to a you password protected home router? With gingerbread, I would use the wps button connection to connect automatically but I see no such configuration in wifi settings in ics.

You have never used wps or other easy wireless configuration? I had it on my phone with gingerbread but lost it with ics.
Most people prefer a more secure wifi access method.
It seems most people here have difficulty identifying the question asked by the OP.
The OP is referring to Wifi Protected Setup. Yes i think it was removed.
While it certainly made wifi security easy, it is my suggestion not to use WPS as out was cracked back around December.

No it was answered in the first reply. At least the way he worded his question.
My reply was pointing out the same fact as the other poster. The fact that WPS is completely unsecured since Dec. So most people don't even try to use it hence why its not talked/cared about much.

You should setup your wireless networking gear (home router and all wifi devices) to use WPA2-PSK and a strong passphrase. When everything else is in place, you can input the same passphrase on the wifi setup dialog that shows up when you select your home network in the TF101 WiFi preferences screen.

As stated by other posters, WPS is utterly insecure and it should never ever be relied upon for proper WiFi security.
That said, I don't recall WPS ever being supported on the TF101 even under Honeycomb (I could be mistaken, though, since my WiFi network equipment doesn't support it).
I happened to be goofing off with my WiFi the other day and I saw that when you go to Settings -> WiFi -> Advanced (in the top right corner) there is in fact an option to use WPS on the tablet with ICS. Find your router name, tap on it, then a little check box with show advanced options. Select WPS and choose button. Then hit the button on the router. Worked for me just fine.

May I ask why WPS is so insecure? My router has a WPA2 protected SSID, but I used wps to setup my wireless printer. It seems to only be" insecure" when it's enabled and looking for a device, which is timed to be on for no more than 2 minutes. I don't think vultures are waiting for those two minutes to connect to your router. Or is there another danger?

WPS is NOT a replacement of WPA it's not a security feature at all!
if you have WPS on ON ROUTER you still need to choose open/wep/wpa/wpa2
as the name could suggest, S stands for Setup and that's what it is. WPS will connect you without need to search for the network in the list of available networks, or even knowing the network name and if there is password, it will fill it in for you. it's an easy setup where you don't need to know password or the name of the wifi network you are connecting to.
another thing. you can't talk about vulnerability in reference to the wifi client - phone. it's the router which is vulnerable. If your car has weak remote central locking, throwing away your remote key transmitter will not make it much safer.
saying ICS doesn't have WPS because it's hackable is wrong. if a coffee place desides to use WPS their net is hackable, it's their concern. I still want to be able to use it as this safety issue doesn't affect me as a wifi client.
and thought ICS has this complicated way to get to the WPS, it's missing the point of WPS as you need to know which wifi you are connecting to, and click many times to get to the option. not easy setup at all. and the indicator of WPS availability is missing too. If I came to a coffee place and saw the icon I told them to keep their password and push the button instead. now I don't know if they have WPS.
So there is still an issue.
But maybe the ICS phone is listening for WPS all the time I didn't test this.

if it's your network, make sure you update router to latest firmware, as this vulnerability has been already addressed in most of the routers. Or keep it OFF until they'll make update to it.
it is NOT only those two minutes after you push the WPS button, but it's hackable all the time.
WPS can be used different ways, you can enter pin of client to be allowed in into router, or pin of router into client, or just push the button and no pin at all.
so the pin works all the time, that would still be fine, but a certain template was found in those pins, which brought the possible number of choices low enough to use brutal force attack to get the correct pin. that's the safety issue. nothing to do with the phone.

Just got my Samsung Captivate about a month and I got my wifi connected to the school network, but when i open the broswer or any apps need internet i didnt get any connections? at the first week it works.. and when connecting to the school wifi it should be come out with the school login page,, then the internet will work.. however the wifi is connected doesnt matter how strong the wifi singal is.. it just cant load and cant bring me to the login page..

I am also at college and have had the same problem. the best reason I have found is the phone itself. half of our wifi is an older standard that does not work on the phone. it shows up as wep and i can not get it to recognize it as 802.1x . in my tinkering I have also messed up the wifi that was working.
long story short it probably won't work. I have spent a long time trying to get it to work with no luck

I also attend a college with an 802.1x connection and the captivate supports most of these networks; however you will probably need to configure the network settings manually (usually retrievable on your schools IT site). If you dont mind digging up your settings I would love to check to see if I can configure your phone.

I know my school recently implemented some new security certificates that you must agree to before logging in, has anything like that changed for you? My wife's Aria is running 2.2 and can log into the school network, but my captivate cannot. It is frustrating I know.
Seems some colleges and universities are noticing issues with android devices letting the DHCP leases to expire but keeps using the IP address assigned instead of requesting a new one.

I actually have similar issues with my Belkin wireless router at home. My laptops and other wireless devices have no problems connecting or re-connecting but the Captivate just refuses to re-connect after the connection was terminated. Even after resetting the router, the phone just keeps trying to use the same IP address for some reason.
The only way I could get it to reconnect is to either reboot the phone or to remove the AP entry which is a pain especially if you have wireless passwords.
Hopefully someone with better insight into how Eclair and Froyo handles WiFi can come up with some fix.

I believe the new 2.2 firmware solves this issue. I too am at College and my captivate FAILS to actually access the internet through wifi unless I statically assigned the IP.
I just updated to Froyo and it connected instantly. I'll have to do more testing to make sure, but I think Samsung finally fixed it.

i just got Galaxy S (Captivate) and wi-fi is giving trouble.
when i tried at a university campus, it gives error and says can't open and try again later. it is like, i get connected to the network, IP and DNS and everything is generated. But when i open browser to open a website, instead of taking me to login page it gives the above error.
here is what i get when i try to open a website.
'web page not available'. the page might be temporarily down or it may have been moved permanently to new address.
here are some suggestions:
- check to make sure device has signal and data connection. (I made sure it is connected to wifi)
- reload page later. (i tried after 5 mins, same result)
- view cached copy from google. (doesn't work either)

Sounds like they use a portal system which requires logon and doesn't play nice with the Captivate's browser. Unfortunately many such portal systems are written poorly and I've even seen some that only work with Internet Explorer.
You could try a different browser on the Captivate. Dolphin allows spoofing assorted User Agents, which might help.
Hey guys, I have the same problem connecting to m school's network login page. It would say connected but the website always says cant be found. But the good news is that I found a way to connect to it manually! What you need is your captivate and friends iphone 4 or 3gs. First have use your friends iphone to connect to the wifi and then go into wifi settings. You should see 2 DNS address, Ip address, netmask (subnet mask) and router address. Now jot those addresses down except the ip address. Go to settings->wireless and network->Wi-Fi settings->now tap the bottom left button under the samsung logo and click advanced. Now check use static ip. Do not enter anything for your ip address just yet (we will do this last). Now enter router address into gateway, subnet mask into netmask, DNS1 to DNS1 and DNS2 to DNS2. ok when you are done click back and tap the network you want to connect to. Once you are connected jot down your ip address by taping the network once more. now go back to where the static ip was and input the ip address you just jot down into the ip address underneath use static ip. Disconnect and reconnect to the desired network. You may have to do this a few times or reboot your phone. This has been working for me so far around different buildings but with the same school network connection. I hope this helps cheers!

Yeah, my school uses the Bradford dissovable agent. Funny thing is, some connections work perfectly, others not at all. Technically none should work, and sometimes I feel that maybe I should tell them that sometimes somehow it is possible to bypass the whole agent thing- but why rock the boat just yet

I have searched, but did not find a working solution on how to connect the Xoom to a wireless network, which does not broadcast its ssid. My friend has an Acer Iconia and he can connect to hidden networks, so Android 3.0 must be able to.
Has anybody been able to get this to work on their Xoom?

You can type the name of the ssid in if you know it. And if you're in range, you'll connect.
Hi, yeah, that works on my phone (CM7) but not on the Xoom... It is disabled for an okish reason, but I was hoping someone would know how to enable it anyway.
The Android framework doesn't properly support hidden SSIDs, unfortunately.
There's a WifiManager setting for network entries, but it doesn't actually do anything.
IMO there's no good reason to use a hidden SSID. It really doesn't provide any additional security (A determined hacker can find your network anyway)
With the incompatibilities it causes with many devices, why do it?
Not sure where some people are having issues adding hidden SSIDs, I had no problem adding my network to the Xoom right out of the box a couple weeks ago. The wifi setup function under wireless settings actually prompts for your SSID when manually adding one. Perhaps I was lucky in getting a less-problematic Xoom, but it works just fine for me. The 3.1 update was pushed out to it automatically last Saturday and I still connect no problem.
Wifi is pretty quick, though it sucks to hear the info about it not utilizing the full potential of 802.11n.
Don't believe the hype that your system is not any more secure through SSID cloaking, doing so makes it is less of a target, unless it's the only AP around and someone knowledgeable enough is looking to get in. Don't use it as your only layer of security, but use it in conjunction with the strongest encryption your systems support.
I agree with both of you, there is no reason to use it, but my employer seems to have a different opinion, so I can't do much with it over there.

I have tried it many times. I am sure the spelling is ok. Mine uses no authentication. Is it the same for your networks?
Would be very interesting to find the difference. (but, then again, I can't change the network properties at my company)

I just bought a second Xoom for my wife and ran into this same problem with hers. Mine connects to the network fine whether its broadcasting or not, I normally have it turned off. Hers will only connect when said broadcast is turned on.
it makes me think it has to be a setting somewhere that's off on hers, just have to find it.
Hello. My phone connects when I go to other people's houses or at school, but not at my house. My router is set up with a WiFi access list so that you need to enter the MAC address before being allowed to even see the network. I have triple checked that the WiFi MAC address from my phone is entered correctly as I did everything else. Does anyone have some advice?

Go to the wifi settings (on your device) and see what channel it is set to (usually under regulatory domain).
maybe you should set the maximum number of channels, otherwise some routers might be excluded.
controls which channel is your router and then try to configure the connection manually.
Sorry for the late reply; I have been pretty busy.
I tried a variety of different channels but none of them seem to work. I had seen that the phone does not work on Channel 13 but that did not seem to be the problem. I have also tried changing the security password type on my router but that did not work either. Are there any other suggestions? Thank you again.

I rooted my nexus 5 using chainfire root and ran the automated script. Everything went smoothly and it finished. Now I have two issues.
1. All of my photos are gone as well as everything else but I only care about the photos. Is it possible to somehow recover them?
2. I've been living on mobile data for a week now and cannot connect to wifi. When I press refresh on the wifi access point list it says "WPS failed. Please try again in a few minutes". Is there any fix? or any better ROM?

1) Yes, everything is wiped when the boot loader is unlocked, so you can't recover that unfortunately.
2) Not sure; try flashing the radio.img from the factory images, there are a number of tutorials such as the one at the top of the general section

1. If you had to unlock your bootloader, all your data is lost, I do not think it is possible to recover it.
2. Are you touching the lower left side button on the WiFi page? If yes, that is not the "refresh" button, but the "WPS" connection button. Try touching the menu (the three dots on the lower right side of the screen) and then on "Scan". That should do the trick.

When you had initially set up your phone, did you set up auto-upload to google+ (or dropbox)? If so, you may have a backup there. If not, you are out of luck (you may want to consider setting up auto-upload to G+ or dropbox or copy or something similar going forward)

1. Chainfire's batch script unlocks the bootloader, thus wiping your phone's internal memory.
2. Why are you trying to connect using WPS? WPS is a deprecated encryption algorithm. Your router probably doesn't even have WPS, unless it's an older router. Your router most likely uses WPA2 encryption by default. You need to select WPA2 and enter the WPA2 key to connect.

@BirchBarlow, When you wrote WPS was obsolete, did you mean to write WEP? WPS is a protected access setup protocol which will work with WPA2 encryption which is supported and enabled out of the box on most recent model WiFi routers. I am not arguing you should use WPS. Since late 2011 it has been reported as vulnerable to brute force attacks. My recommendation, which I imagine you would agree with would be to set the router/access point with a WPA2/AES (as opposed to WEP or WPA or WPA2/TKIP) and manually enter the access key on the client.

WPS works in conjunction with WPA2 but it's still deprecated because of vulnerability to brute-force attacks. I don't know about other routers, but my current Verizon/Actiontec router doesn't WPS support and had WPA2 enabled by default. My old one had WPA enabled by default, but I don't remember if it supported WPS. Either way, I don't think the newest ones support WPS. Maybe yours is 1 to 2 years old? I do agree with you, no matter what kind of router you have, you should only use WPA2 for optimal security.
@BirchBarlow, I have a Netgear R6300 which is about 18 months old. The latest Netgear R7000 supports WPS as does the TrendNet 1750 featured in PC Mag's Nov '13 review. I won't shed a tear but it doesn't look dead yet.

Well I guess I stand corrected. The manufacturers must lag behind the industry standards. Regardless, they should all come out of the box WPA2 enabled by default. The average 40-watt bulb doesn't know or care about the difference between WPA, WPA2, WPS, AES, TKIP, etc, so logic dictates if it comes out of the box WPS-enabled, it's going to stay that way.

It's actually a pretty recent at&t uverse router. It uses WPA(or 2) Personal. Still I cannot to it.

When you enter your encryption key do not forget that it is uppercase and lowercase sensitive, at least on every router I've ever used.

I just assume that you have multiple computers at home that are connected to your network. I've come across some programs that I used to recover our network password when I was younger, all you need is a usb drive and those programs. I believe the site was called nirsoft or something .

If your router DOES have WPS, then this is a good quick and clean call and should be sure to remember to click "thanks" on Xpid3r's post.
If it DOES NOT have it, then give us a little more info:
1.)when he changes it, who and what does he update other than his laptop? - sometimes people are easier to bride, sweet talk, or otherwise crack than devices... Would mom, brother, roommate, friend etc. get the updated password? If not, what other devices get updated? anywhere the password is saved is a potential entry point. For example, if YOU were keeping the password from HIM... Then he could get it from your galaxy s5 NOTE:I can't post a link, because I'm new here. But if you google "recover wifi password from android" there is a walktrough from hubpages that I've used
2.)Could you borrow a friend's laptop to hack the password? - If so, there are plenty of tutorials around for that (though admittedly that is not a SHORT learning curve)
3.)How visible is the router? I rented a room once and shared Wifi was supposed to be included in the rent. The landlord was a real tool though and, among other issues, he wouldn't tell me the router password so I could do some port-forwarding etc. It got annoying very fast. But he had his router hidden away for aesthetics. So I connected my own router (from my last place) to one of his router's wired ports and then had my own wireless network through the house with its own SSID. I lived there 4 more months and he never noticed it. If your dad's router is tucked away you could probably do the same. Or if you cannot access his laptop BECAUSE he is out of town, then it wouldn't have to be hidden. You could do that type of setup in plain sight temporarily and just take it down before he comes home and get the password from his laptop then. (Tip: if you do this disable DHCP server or YOUR router so they don't fight over who gets to assign IP addresses)

I usually use his laptop when he's not around and get the password but that's not an option for the time being. Thanks in advance.
The Wifi Type is WPA2 PSK
The router is a Netgear
The modem is a Motorola
P.S. I do t have access to a computer but I do have physical access to the router and modem and I'm new to the forum please let me know if I posted this in the wrong g place.

you can find the password in options of wireless networks in the father's computer. Do it when the father goes to the toilet or eat , it only takes 1 minute
