I am very sorry to open a new thread about battery drain that has been discussed so many times but I am really desperate.
I recently purchased a second hand Nexus S i9020A (unlocked AT&T version) from swappa. (Website that sells only android phones) and I am getting terrible battery life no matter what I try.
The phone is rooted and have tried several ICS roms and all have terrible battery life about 6-7 hours when the phone is on idle for most of the time.
I then installed CM7 as I read that ICS has some battery drain issues, but I still get really bad battery life 6.5-7.5 hours again the phone is on idle for most of the time.
I also tried several kernels.
I tried disabling the WIFI, GPS etc this did not help.
The phone came with two batteries an Anker Battery and the Samsung battery. I sent Anker an email asking them about the battery life, they told me to let the battery discharge to around 10% and recharge to 100% a couple of times. I did this twice, but no improvement in the battery life I was about to do it a third time when I fell asleep the battery must have drained completely and now that battery seems to no longer be working.
I thought maybe I am really unlucky and I got two bad batteries, so I purchased a new RND Battery from Amazon as I thought maybe there were some problems with the Anker. Turned off the phone let it charge for 7.5 hours, but the battery meter still showed that it was not fully charged, but the instructions said to charge for at least 5-6 hours, so I turned on and unfortunately I have the same battery drain.
I have installed a Battery Calibration app from the Android Market to see what the reading was and when the phone read 100% charge it was a little over 4,000 mV . I am not sure if this is what it is supposed to be, maybe one of you can let me know.
In addition I have wiped the battery stats from from the bootloader a few times after I have fully charged the battery and even factory reset the phone but this made no difference.
Last night I even flashed a new radio I went from I9020AUCKF1 to KB3 but this also made no difference. I have been struggling with this problem for about a week with no improvement what so ever.
I read that its bad to completely discharge Li-on batteries, so before I left home to go out, I turned off the phone so that the battery would not discharge, when I arrived home a few hours later the battery was dead even though the phone was turned off. (this was the original Samsung battery not the new battery I purchased, I did not try this with the new battery as yet)
I checked the battery usage and compared it to a Galaxy S2 to see what was using up the battery and the OS and Screen usage % seems to be comparable amount to the GS2.
I also tried a few of the Governors that are included with CM7 and also used the wheatly Governor when I was on ICS, but it made no difference.
Can any one help me? Is there something wrong with the phone? I purchased this as a present for someone who really wanted an iPhone because I could not afford an unlocked iPhone and they are really disappointed by this. I know this may be an isolated case, but I always assured the person that the android phone can do everything the iPhone can do, but not I feel like such a fool.
Can this be fixed? I purchased this when I was in the US but now I am away so returning it would be a problem. Is there a way to check if there is something wrong with the phone itself that's causing the battery to drain at such a fast rate?
Any one that can help me I would really appreciate it and be very thankful, I know there are other topics that deal with battery issues, but I have been researching this for about a week and tried everything I can, I didn't just start a new thread without trying.
The screenshot below shows a high display usage because I was using the phone to try to troubleshoot normally android system uses the most and display is closer to 7% but the uptime is the same. Even though it says 3h 51 mins at 48% in the screenshot the battery seems to discharge faster as it percentage goes down.
Can you enter this code and check for battery information:
*#*#4636#*#*
You can check the battery health and temperature. It might give you some insights.
Do you have good reception? Is it constantly trying to connect to 3G networks? Can you check apps which might be trying to connect to Internet all the time? Do you have this problem once you flash a clean rom (or maybe it starts after installing apps)? Have you tried stock ROM?

I've read about this in other threads... not sure if I've already tried it... ull need to do a factory reset to wipe all data and battery calibrations. Once u reset... flash Evilistos ICS rom 4.0.4 and use the Air Kernel 3.0 .... flash the Tweaked Nexus Boot Animation (looks really nice but you don't need too lol) and that should do it... =]

Hi Oogway first of all thanks a whole lot for your response.
I dialed the number and got the following
Battery Status : Discharging
Power Plug : Unplugged
Battery Level : 100
Battery Scale : 100
Battery health : Good
Battery Voltage : 4096 mV
Battery Temp : 34.0 C
Battery Technology : Li-ion
Time since boot : 9:58
Just finished charging it again.
I have good reception, but I have no data plan on this phone so it isn't using any 3G, actually I don't even have 3G in my country :|
I have no apps installed and the problems still happen even with a clean install. Before the person shipped the phone to me I asked them to install the stock rom and when I got it the problem was present, since then I tried different roms but to no avail so far.
Thanks very much for your time and effort in offering possible solutions, I am grateful for your help.

Its not a new phone its a used phone, but the seller has agreed to refund me if needed, the problem though is that I bought the phone in the US but I am not in the US now, if I return it to him he may be charged taxes etc.
I returned the phone and radio to stock, but it seems the issue is still present. Any more ideas?

Did you buy through Ebay? Perhaps you can print out your receipt and get a warranty repair through Samsung. That's what i did when i deleted my imei. Cost me nothing except postage.

I have abyssmal battery as well with my used i9020t. Although I have only used various ICS so far and don't know how used the battery is.
At night I put it to airplane mode and closed running apps. In the morning the phone feels warm and battery drained drastically, which makes no sense.
I just got an Anker battery as well and will try some Gingerbread rom. For now I'm using Franco kernal and undervolting by 50mV which help a bit, but not much.

Hi Bedalus, I bought it on swappa. I bought a few phones there before without any problems. I have a paypal receipt from swappa, maybe I can email samsung and find out if they can repair or not. I honestly think its a hardware issue now. Because the battery still drains even when the phone is off. I flashed several radios and roms, wiped battery stats, changed battery, wipe data and factory reset and its all the same.
My issue though is that I am not in the US and the phone was purchased from the US so return may be a problem as well as shipping to Samsung, but I will email them to find out more.
But thanks for your suggestion Bedalus, really appreciate it.

Hi Ekasol, does your battery drain even when the phone is off like mine? How much battery life do you typically get? I get around 6 hours. Just to let you know that I did flash the stock ROM on the phone but it made no difference to me.
Mine is the AT&T version, I got the roms here .. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445621
But you can get the roms for yours here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063664 in case you have not found the original roms yet. Best of luck, I hope at least one of us is able to get the phone working or repaired.

Bedalus, before I contact Samsung, do you know if rooting and installing custom roms void the warranty?
Technically yes. However, if you wipe, install a stock rom and bootloader and lock the bootloader afterward, they have no way to tell.
Thanks Harbb
Can you try this Gingerbread rom NSCollab anyway, I know you said you tried GB already. I don't have time to test with full battery yet, but Gingerbread seem to retain battery life pretty well.
If you still have time, I would say save yourself the hassle and return it, it sounded like hardware issue. And buy the person an iPhone instead. If he/she is not tech savvy it is pointless and will just give the person a difficult time. I do not have an iPhone, but I have to do iPhone tech support for my co-workers, Android would just be a nightmare.
Also if the person don't mind going with T-Mobile, see if you can return it and get a Galaxy S 4G. It is one of my favorite phone. No LED flash and ICS (yet), but you get microSD slot and HSPA+ 21Mbps (cheaper plans too). And best of all the Valhalla roms.
Tried NSCollab, battery drain seems to be a little worse with this ROM. The reason I did not purchase the iphone is because of the cost, I got this for around $260. Thanks for the suggestions though, I will consider them, but so far it looks like this phone has some hardware problems.
Ello Folks,
I'm new to this forum and for some stupid reason I can't post within the forum I wanted to, so I hope someone can help me here..
I have been playing with Custom Roms for a long time and I have ALWAYS encountered problems regarding battery drain. I have searched innumerous times for ways to fix it.. I've tried many different ROMS and KERNELS and I always ended up with a massive battery consumption with little use. I then thought it was my battery as the device is quite old so I decided to buy a new original battery and still having the same problem.
I am starting to think that I am really dumb and doing something wrong or maybe I am just unlucky. I got my phone back in 2011 from T-Mobile UK and I am now running JB 4.2.2 Revolt JB I9100 and Dorimanx V9.33 as kernel.
My battery is going from 100% to 0% in like 4 hours. Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks

Batter drain in 4 hours is not normal. But with heavy usage of 3g/4g it can be. As you said you got heating problems too.
So, first with the battery. Install betterbatterystats from play store. Let the battery drain off completely and charge it to 100 in a go keeping data network/Bluetooth/GPS/WiFi in off mode. Check how much time it's taking to charge it from 0% to 100%. Now discharge it off to 0% and Check the rate of discharge. If it's below 5%/Hour you are safe.
But if it is as you said before 4hours battery backup, there must be some trouble.
These kinds of drastic battery drain happens of many reasons.
1. Poor signal strength.
2. Overloading cpu ( which also cause overheating)
3. Any background running apps which utilizing a bunch a data.
4. Bad kernel (we can pick this out as you tried different kernels.)
5. Defective battery.
Or a last chance
6. A hardware failure.
So inorder to find the root cause behind this problem check each of the possibilities one at a time.
In case of cpu, change the governor and I/o scheduler and see.
In case of background running apps, check whichever programs revising maximum amount of battery.
Hope it helps..

Cheers mate,
I am well aware that custom kernels allow me to overclock it and change governors and i/o and that these kinda settings have a major role on how much battery the device will consume. But as I have never really understood the diferences btw them I for once have never played with the values so I have always left 'em at their default value.
The only real reason I've decided to change to a Custom Rom is to get new versions of the Android OS and to get rid of the hideous TouchWiz skin from Samsung..
I am not living in the UK at the moment as got transfered to Brazil for work and I have been on TIM network and they suck badly so maybe cuz their 3G sucks its whats causing my battery to drain like crazy.
But I will definitely follow your instructions and hopefully I'll get a positive result..
Once again, thank you very much.
I have had a problem come and go with my Samsung Infuse. Some update from some app causes the CPU to never be able to truly 'sleep' or 'idle' correctly causing the phone to burn through 3.7% battery life per hour. When it's 'healthy' it only uses 0.7% per hour.
In the past I thought I had isolated Google Play Books as the culprit and uninstalling that solved the issue. It took me quite a while to find that issue, then my phone was great for months. About a month or two ago something changed and the problem is back. Again I uninstalled almost all updates and apps I didn't need and managed to get it purring nicely for over two days, then it started burning power again. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am sick of fighting with it and also do not want the pain and expense of a new phone as that seems the only option.
The phone is an ATT phone that I use as a 'Go Phone' and ATT has never posted an OS update for the phone to download so it is still at Firmware 2.2.1 and Kernel 2.6.32.9 Build number FROYO.UCKH1.

Any battery killing apps can be determined by Wakelock Detector. So if you're rooted (I think that's a requirement), you are good to go.
I installed WLD and after 2.5 hours running, my battery is now draining at 4.5% per hour with something called UID taking 3m 18s for a total of 29 times and only four other listings adding up to less than half of that in wakeups and less than a minute. Net was 3% awake.
How is my phone burning so much power if it's only awake for about 4 minutes total???
My phone is NOT rooted, not sure exactly what that means but I am assuming some kind of wipe and re-install without ATT junk on there. I suppose rather than buy a new phone I can look into that process, would that let me get the latest version of Android? I assume I would lose EVERYTHING I have configured on the phone, would I still be able to use it as an ATT Go Phone? It took HOURS for the techs in the ATT store and help from experts on the phone to get data working on it and I would hate to go through that again.

Hmmm, does Froyo have a built-in battery usage app (i.e. Settings > Battery, then scroll down for the "Battery use Details" aka top abusers)? If not BetterBatteryStats (XDA Edition) should fill in those gaps. Whenever it appears I have a runaway app, I look at my battery use details and wakelocks.

Rooting is essentially getting administrative privileges so you can do more on your phone. Something simple like backing up your apps requires root. Wiping and reinstallling without AT&T junk would be more like installing a custom ROM. That will get you the latest version of Android (via Cyanogenmod or its offshoots like Carbon).
If you are interested in going that route, there is a process that will get you there. For now, I would recommend the next step up in Android versions, being Gingerbread. This version is still official for the Infuse, so it does have the AT&T junk. Be sure to record your APN settings before upgrading as that was probably what took hours at the AT&T store. So I would use option A or D in the link above, particularly D if you don't plan on sticking with Gingerbread. And if going to KitKat later, you can move straight to Step 3 in the guide (linked further up in this paragraph).
Hope this helps.
After 13 hours I am only at 4% awake time and still at 4.7% per hour. Bettery Battery Stats and Wakelock Detector seem to indicate that no applications are at fault, and I am still running the original OS so nothing has changed there, does this mean it has to be my battery? I only use the original charger, but this battery has only been use a month or two. I have a stack of batteries I can try out, but it bothers me that these batteries are wearing out so fast if that is indeed the problem. Am I missing something here?
I am happy with my phone as it is so long as I don't have to charge it every other day, is the Infuse just hard on batteries? Upgrading looks terribly scary, and I am not sure it would make things any better. (The one exception to that is Skype no longer supports my OS, but unless I can take the phone to some expert I don't see myself going through the stress of trying to upgrade.)
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Some more info, for the last 5 hours two battery apps show me locked at 30% battery power which makes no sense. It's like the phone has no idea how much power is actually left in the battery. Is it just voltage that tells the phone how much battery is left?
I have played around with a few 'battery' calibrators in the past, but at the time they didn't seem to do much good. Is that what I need now?

I think it is just voltage that determimes. It could be the battery or the sensor. The way to tell is try a different battery and see, sounds like you have a spare already. If a calibrator worked in the past, maybe its time to try it again.
I never considered the infuse hard on batteries, but the battery does have a low mAh rating for phones of that size.
A charge every other day is very good for smartphones. Thats what i get with my last two devices. But once the battery cant last a full day for me, i know something is up.
P.S. Does wakelock detector say that the device is awake most of the time? If so, the problem could still be software.
I ran the battery all the way down and charged it while the phone was off. Initially it ran for almost a day with like -0.5% per hour, but then it went back to the -4.7% per hour rate and it may hit another plateau again. It seems to be I need to calibrate the battery or clear out the old calibration. I need ROOT to do that so I looked into that. I started by installing the older version of Kies and it updated itself, but the install complained about a driver failing to install, and when I try and plug the phone in (even in USB debug mode), Kies will not make the connection. Vanilla USB connection works fine however. Am I missing a certain driver for Win 7 64 bit? Where can I find it?

To follow up on this, I did manage to get my phone rooted, and I must say that was pretty scary. After reading the instructions to upgrade my Froyo to Jellybean, I think not for me. Why can't an OS upgrade on Android be WAY easier for the poor consumer?
Anyhow, now that I have root, I was able to calibrate my battery and go a whole 5 days on one charge and still have 20% left. You would think many consumers need to replace/calibrate their battery and having to root their phone to get it working correctly is just ridiculous. Android needs to make that WAY easier as well.

OS upgrades on Android ARE easy. You're just using a phone for which official software updates were discontinued years ago. Gingerbread was the last official software released for the Infuse. You should be thankful that you're even getting ICS, Jelly Bean and KitKat because of some awesome devs.
A current gen Nexus devices has easy software updates. You click update and it does it for you. No flashing, calibration or rooting required. In fact the updates are usually more stable than Apple's half-baked disasters with iOS 7 and 8.

Boughr a n5 this june.. Was pretty happy with it.. Got quite decent battery life out of it. Around 4.5-5 hrs on a daily basis.. Decided to root the phone 2 months ago.. Unlocked the bootloader using fastboot and flashed cwm.. Then flashed franco kernel.. Got root working and all but battery started draining like crazy.. Got around 2-2.5 hrs sot.. Thought had done something wrong so after a week decided to go back to stock using the 4.4.4 factory images from googles developer website.. Flashed it using fastboot and everything booted up fine.. But battery life didnt really improve.. Still get 2-3hrs sot.. Then installed the 3rd dev preview 2 weeks ago and am now using the offical lollipop rom.. Battery problem never went away.. Any idea why??
So one thing to keep in mind is that battery life can be affected by several things; number of apps installed which also may be running in the background, brightness level, GPS, etc.
So I recommend you download the app " better battery stats, open it and then let it run over night.
The app should give you info on what's going on.
If you're still stuck, open the app, go to share and you can get a log.
Post that log in this thread and politely ask if someone can explain it.

Thanks for the quick response.. I totally get ur point.. Correct me if I'm wrong.. But aren't wakelocks things which run in the background and prevent it from going to sleep?.. In that case i still don't understand y i can't seem to get a good sot when using the phone continuously.. I mean if i browse on chrome continuously without a break.. Battery still last about 2.5 hrs.. Also currently I'm running a minimal amount of apps as compared to the initial period with the good battery and nothing new.. I have a feeling that i might have messed something up during flashing.. Is that even possible??.. Anyway.. Ill try getting on that better battey status too

I'm going to suggest posting and asking further questions in the thread I linked you. It is the direct support thread. This is merely to show you where to navigate to.
Hi everyone , I'm new in the community but I already found that this is one of the best phone forums online , normally you come here for help because you have a problem right ? But today I'm just here to give an advice, I notice that many people complain about the battery life on their new phones , I had the same issue with my note 5 , I saw a video on YouTube and the phone showed an estimation of battery usage of 18hours while mine only showed 9 , I immediately thought that my phone was broken or something until a month later I realized that I was getting more than 20 hours of battery usage , when we use a phone for the first 3-5 days ( specially android) we can't expect it to be fully optimized because it's still learning your behavior and phone usage, just by installing a new app your making your phone to "learn to do something new" when I got my s7 edge I didn't expected to have great battery life , I was constantly installing and removing apps , flashing Roms and trying themes and etc. Now after a month later I use my phone on a pretty standard routine , I used package disabled but it only made my phone laggy and slower , so I decided to use my phone on the stock way , I running all stock , ( only disabled the apps that come with the phone that I don't use like power point , Samsung gear and health...) and after I did this I noticed a huge bump on battery life , I went from 12 hour of usage and 4:30-5hours of SOT to 30hours of usage and 8hours of SOT
After installing a custom/stock rom make sure to drain the battery completely just once to calibrate it !
I can never get more than 6 hrs sot.. Gonna follow your tips and write back in a week or so. Thanks for sharing!

Feel free to use package disabler, it was a lifesaver to me with my note 5 but not on the s7 , but other users report that has been really helpful other thing you could try even that the impact will be minimal is using a dark theme ,
Also don't update to the newer firmware if on Exynos. Seems to hit battery life by 25% or more as android system goes from around 5% to 15-20% battery usage.

with newer firmware you mean the may update?
with me it was the other thing around, in the beginning it was quite good but now, its worse. is it because of the bright sunlight or the phone getting hot because it was around 30 degrees almost?
you see...screen on time about 2 hours
most active battery drainer, android itself
Only way for me to get 4 hrs of sot i have to plug in to charge and disconnect before i get to 90 cause then it seems to thing its fully charged and battery meter resets (on battery).

The thing is, I have disabled half of the system already, but it just feels like it's doing even worse than before so I'm leaning back on running stock again.
Yes original firmware much better battery than the update

It didn't work either to me , this is what I think , it may sound stupid but it could be the true cause , I think when you use an app like package disabler to disable things on your phone and then you accidentally touch to open the app or setting disabled the phone will think "what's going on here" why is this disabled? And it maybe tries to access/ open the package again and again causing it to actually drain battery !, You could a cache wipe , it worked for me , I follow all guides to extend battery life using package disabler, custom rom , flashing zips to delete bloatware but none of them worked for me , instead I went all stock ,and after installing the stock rom I did a factory reset and them the cache wipe, it worked flawless to me , the phone now works like a charm , no overheating (maybe I don't feel it because I got a case ) but the point is try to find your own solution , every s7 edge it's unic, maybe a simple reebok on your phone could resolve all of your problems , and a very important thing !!!!! If you flash a rom /kernel make sure you let your battery drain completely just once to calibrate it!
I wiped nothing, stock rom latest APD1 , aod off now but on sometimes , location on, sync on 3 emails, disabled a few things with ez package disabler. Browsed the net for all the time the screen was on, WiFi on while screen of and on for atleast 2 hrs while using line messenger and used Spotify for around 30 to 40 mins. This is sot and battery usage.
I don't know how u manage to get such bad battery life, swear u guys r fu#*ING about with sh%t too much, let it settle.

Great battery life , you can easily achieve 3 days of battery life and 8-9 hours of SOT I guess which is great for you , just consider yourself in the 5% of people that own a phone with no battery issues , I'm happy with my 8hours of SOT and I could achieve 3days like you just by using WiFi, I use LTE because it's faster were I live but remember that there are people so disappointed with their phones because they want to get the most out of their phones and just can't, may I ask if you are amazed with your battery life or do you own other device that beats the s7 on battery ?
I am amazed, it's as good as, if not better than my previous phone the z3, which was running a custom rom and kernel.
I do consider myself lucky to have the phone run so well right out the box.
Also when I said alot r fu#&ng around with their device, I meant roughly the same as you, I didn't mean to imply their problems r not actually there. I meant as u had said, changing roms, removing apps for new, disabling apps, not letting anything settle, wont give good results in battery life.

Holy smoke, 5+ hrs sot in half of battery. I've been trying to get more than 6 hrs for like a month now with different roms and optimizations, not even close..
I hate to be the voice of cynicism, but we do need to stop this stuff somewhere. The original post is utter nonsense. The suggestion that phones 'learn' your behaviour just simply isn’t how kernels work. There's a very small degree of 'learning' but power management is a very reactive process based on exactly what's happening. The only thing new apps change is what processes are running, and the kernel will instantly scale to do what it 'thinks' is right. Some managers will observe processes for a bit longer and react based on that - but we're talking hours at most, NOT days.
The only credit I'd give to this idea (which seems to be all over XDA for some reason) is that the first few days people use their new shiny phone a lot more than usual, and probably also more than they’d think. They also become far more aware of battery life and will even turn on the screen just to check battery life, which will obviously accumulate batery drain - so the bit about using your phone more is certainly true. But anything about Android being some sort of AI Neural Network app learning extraveganza that learns what you do over several days is (for the most (significant) part) wrong.
Think this is just descending into another battery thread and we have one here already
