Hello, my name is Aaron. I see the positives and negatives in every situation.I got an android phone because I don't want to be restricted by apple. I have played with my phone one too many times and...this happened.
Accidentally updated my atrix 2 to 2.3.6. I then severely wanted root so I tried to flash back. I googled for fastboot tools and found one on this forum. When i tried to flash an img, it apparently did not work even though I choose this fastboot tool because it said it was for atrix 2 and had atrix 2 img's with it. Now, my phone is stuck in fastboot mode. I have rsd lite working on my old, crappy laptop. However the usb port isn't giving my phone enough power to even turn on.It only turns on when charging through the wall.I have the fastboot files. All I need is a way to get my phone to stay ON while plugged into my laptop. I will appreciate any help, no matter how good or bad the help is because it's better than nothing.
Everyone, I have been helping with this as much as I can thorough PM, but I think he has a low power USB port on the laptop he is using.
1) have you tried another usb cable that is not from Motorola?
Sometimes that helps in these odd situations.
2) Can you get ahold of or borrow a powered USB hub?
That might allow you get this up long enough to flash the fxz to get your phone back to stock.
P.S. he can't ask for help in the thread about the fastboot files, because he has less than 10 posts.
What do you guys think? any brainstorming would be greatly appreciated, and he can't ask for a warranty exchange, just don't go down that path.
Jim, I am willing to buy one, but I would need to know how much they cost and where I could get them from E.X. Walmart. Could you link me to one?
Do you have a close relative or friend that would let you use their computer? I would try that before buying a hub and it would also let you know if your laptop USB port is bad.

Here is a link for a powered usb hub. Now I am not 100% sure if this will do the trick, so I am hoping someone else has an idea, since I am not a windows guy, and I am guessing that your laptop is older and has lower powered usb connections.

A usb cable that is not moto branded:

These are just ideas that I am throwing out.

Yeahh I have my best friend who lives right next to me. His laptop is newer than mine but has xp too,I just don't know if I could use it as it was his mom and dad's.
try connecting to the wall charger, power on if it doesn't go to fastboot automatically.
at this point hold both volume up+down and press power again, the screen will turn off
still holding the volume up+down press power and you should be presented with the options
Boot mode selection menu
vol up selects, vol down scrolls
Available boot modes:
Normal Powerup
Recovery
AP Fastboot
BP Tools
just press vol up on normal powerup
let the phone charge completely then use the fastboot files to restore but you will need to make some changes to the fastboot files to flash successfully
Be sure to flash the stock rom with RSD Lite 5.6 and usb drivers 5.2, use windows 7 to flash the rom in ap fastboot mode. All will be fine.

rsd lite will not install on my windows 7 computer , which I am using right now. Also, my phone will not turn off, nor charge. It only turns off when it is not charging. [UPDATE] Now it won't even turn on while connected to my windows 7 computer.

You will have to disconnect it from the wall and pull the battery, then put the battery back in and connect the wall charger and do the following, your timing will be critical, you might have to unplug pull the battery and do it few times to get it right:

Jim I know you're not a windows guy but do you figure i can copy all of the rsdlite files from my sh*tty laptop to my flash drive and put them on my windows 7 computer and have it work because the installer doesn't work on this computer and my laptop is very slow.
P.S. I found it that it's not the laptop's usb. plugged it into this computer and it didn't turn on.
Sorry it didn't load the above post.

You might be able to zip up the RSD's installed directory under C:\Program Files for the RDS lite app and move it to your Windows 7 machine, but if there are any registry checks in the application it may fail when you run it, and it might have issues, since it does talk to the device manager, but it is worth a try, just make sure you also install the drivers for the phone as well, here is a link for those:

These steps do not work. I do not get said options. I held the power volume up and volume down for 30 seconds and nothing happened. [EDIT] thanks for 32 bit driver maybe it will now charge on said laptop. Screw it, it turned itself off. This is unfix-able for me. I need to go back to ATT but my mom won't let me because she works for ATT.
If your battery is completely dead you can still charge it but you will need a old USB cable for this to work. Take the old cable and cut one end off. Strip back the plastic and expose the red and black wires. And then on each black and red wire strip back the plastic to expose the metal wires. Take your battery out and tape the red exposed wires to the positive side of the battery and the black wire to the negative side of the battery. Then being careful not to pull off the tape and wires plug the good end of the USB into a good USB port and let it charge for 30 mins. This will give you enough power to boot up and flash. Had to do this personally once on my OG ATRIX
I am just a teenager, don't trust myself doing that. Don't wanna fry myself doing that. Do you know how I can at minimum get it to turn on when in the computer usb port. All that happens is the notification light turns white.
If the battery is dead it won't turn on without getting a charge on the battery itself first. The only other way will be as posted earlier by Jim and having it plugged into a wall charger that I know of.
When I plug it into a wall charger, it does not charge. It plainly only gives it enough power to stay on, it acts as if instead of a charger, it just just a connection directly to a power source that is necessary to stay connected to to work.
Im at work tonight so I'm limited as to what I can do but tomorrow I can walk you thru fabbing up a USB cable if you want me to. Its really rather easy and the USB ports don't put out enough power to hurt you. Trust me I know LoL. But like you said if you don't feel comfortable doing this then I totally understand.
If we can't get your battery some juice then the only other thing I can see is ordering a spare battery charger just for the battery itself.

Im running CM7 on my cappy and today my power button started failing. Volume and such work though.
Im trying to get it to stock so i can trade it in. Would a jig get me in to download? i can normally do the key combo, but when i put in the battery, it just starts up. maybe because of cm7?
You might still be able to get it into DL mode. Fire up Odin 1-click, and plug your usb cable into your computer. Remove the battery cover, sim, external sd and battery, then replace the battery. Hold down both volume rocker keys and plug your mini usb into the top of the phone. That normally will put you in DL mode.

i had this problem too at first. this worked for me
1. remove battery, sim and microsd card
2. plug micro-usb cable into your computer and the phone
3. hold volume up+down
4. insert battery
for some reason cm7 doesn't like to turn off while plugged in so for me putting the usb in before the battery did the trick
hm, tired that. all it does it stay on the loading screen thing when u plug in ur phone as its charging and off.
then it goes to black and the loading screen comes back..

If you have one of the captivates that has the 3 Buttons disabled you will get this. I have the same issue with my captivate but I bought a JIG and now it works just fine.
1. Remove battery, SIM
2. Launch ODIN
3. Insert JIG into phone
4. Plugin battery and wait for Download Mode
5. Remove JIG and connect to laptop with regular USB cable
kay, i'll try that!
Okay, so I wanted to flash back to stock 2.2 in order to get a fresh start, that and my battery levels are a tad messed up after wiping my battery status following a PnP rom flash(switches from about 50% to 15% after only a reboot), and I wanted to just set things back to normal. So, I begin doing the usual procedure in ODIN, but this time my phone will not stay in Download Mode unless the battery is in, even with the USB plugged in to my computer. I don't know if this has anything to do with my gimped battery stats or not, but ODIN was working just fine until now. Does anybody have a clue as to what's going on? If not, is it absolutely necessary to take out the battery before flashing?
You may want to uninstall/reinstall drivers for phone. If usb is not staying connected it may kick the phone out of DL mode. That may not be the cause but it can hurt.
If that doesn't do it try different usb ports or a different cable if you have one. May wanna try this one first now that I think about it as it is probably easier.
Tap-a-Talked
Unfortunately those ideas didn't work. I even tried different computers as well as ports and cables, and reinstalling the drivers didn't do the trick, either . Thanks for the extremely quick response, though!
To provide a little more information for those reading: ODIN recognizes my phone and everything when the battery is IN and the phone is in Download Mode, but when I yank out the battery it turns off. It seems really strange, but if anyone else has some more suggestions, it would be awesome!
I have seen this happen when:
1. Not using samsung usb cable
2. Plugging the usb cable into a usb hub
Try using the cable that came with the phone and plug it in directly into the computer.

Yeah, I'm using the stock cable and plugging straight into my computer. I even borrowed the one from my brother's Mesmerize as well in order to make sure mine wasn't faulty. This makes me think that it's my phone itself that is messing things up. :\ Should I try restoring to one of my phone's backups and then see what happens, perhaps?
EDIT: Alright, so I restored a backup from a couple months ago; not exactly stock as it had a different kernel installed, but oh well. I was able to get things rolling and flash CM7, except now I have data issues, so it looks like I'm going to try Heinz 57 and see how that works, haha. This couldn't be more difficult...it would still be nice to use ODIN for when I really need it, but this will have to do for now.
Um well yeah data didn't work for me either on cm7. As for Odin.... are you...
1. Remove battery
2. Start Odin
3. Press & hold dn volume
4. Insert usb cable
That's the method that'll work. If you just tell it to reboot into download mode, you'll need to leave the battery in and everything, and just start Odin, plug it in, and go.
Hope this helps!

Yeah, that's the method I'm doing, and the phone doesn't respond at all. I've done this before, it's just that now the phone won't go into Download Mode/turn on unless there's a battery in it. I'm probably pretty much screwed, but I guess as long as I don't make some fatal error while flashing one of these times I should be fine...

You can do an Odin flash with the battery in. It won't hurt anything but there have been places I've seen where Odin won't finish the process. Also make sure you uncheck for it to reboot automatically if you don't want it to. No idea what the problem is though.

Thanks akellar, that's good news, then! I was wondering why everyone says the battery has to be in, but it's good to know I won't screw up anything if I do. Anywho, I finally got CM7 working, I had to flash the 1.5 OTB kernel instead of the 1.2 one, and I'm loving it so far! So, for now, all is well.
I do NOT recommend trying this until others who actually know about it have posted, but.... Everyone always says how we don't fully understand how Odin works, and that Heimdall is a better alternative.
So, more as a question to the experts instead of a suggestion to btoast (at least for now), what about him using Heimdall here...?
Sounds like the procedure being used is the issue. Take the battery out and plug it in (after you've started odin and have the files loaded in the appropriate slots) hold down on volume once you've plugged it in - that will take you to download mode. Don't worry about the battery at all - flash the rom and when it's done it will shut the phone off - then put the battery in to reboot after you've pulled it off the cable again.
Sounds to me like people are putting the battery back in after the phone goes into download mode - this is not something i've ever done nor would suggest, there's no reason to have your battery in because you can simply put it in and turn the phone on after odin is done....however If for some reason you really want that battery in while you're using odin, you should use adb (or QTadb) and you can set the phone into download mode with the battery still in, while you have it hooked to the computer. With adb the command is "adb reboot download" with qtadb you click the "shell" button and simply type "reboot download" this will put the phone into download with the battery still in it.

See, that's the problem I'm having. Now for some reason my phone *will not* turn on and go into Download Mode when holding volume down and all that without the battery in. When I take the battery out while in Download Mode (with the cable plugged in and everything set) my phone turns off.
Honestly it sounds like power is not being sent over the usb cable. I could be completely wrong on this but that's just how it sounds.
Tap-a-Talked
That is what it sounds like, which is weird because all of the cables I used connect just fine when the phone is on (I have two available), and I want to move stuff to SD, etc. I guess it apparently doesn't feel like working when there is no battery shoving power through it:\.
Here's an idea. Plug your phone into your charger with battery out and see if you can get into DL mode. If it does just unplug and it will go away. If this works then it is something in the pc. If not it is in phone/cable
Tap-a-Talked
As a related issue my phone won't go into d/l mode using the battery pull method, however Odin reads the phone when plugged in. I'm using the cable that came with the phone and when the phone is on it connects just fine. When I reboot into d/l mode it works battery in and all, but I'm unsure how Odin will affect my phone. I'm running heinz 5/7/11 otb v.1.3 with shake n bake theme (not sure if that helps)
Ok as a guinea pig I decided to try using Odin with the battery in. As mentioned I have Heinz 5/7/11 otb v.1.3 with shake n bake theme. I'm also running Times_infinity's cwr 3.x. OK..here's what I did. I made sure lagfix was DISABLED. I rebooted into download mode from recovery (from what I understand 2.5 doesn't offer that option, 3.x does) with battery in I odin'ed in one of dfgas's bootsplashs. My phone rebooted up and everything seems to be peachy. I even went in afterward and enabled lagfix to make sure everything was running smooth. I'm not sure if rebooting into download mode will work when rebooting from a theme option menu. I hope this helps.

Ya, as soon as you plug the phone in with no battery and hold the volume key down, it should go into download mode and be powered through the usb cable. If not, then I'd imagine there is something wrong with hardware. In all my months of flashing and different states of "brick" I've never not been able to get into download mode through the steps I've stated here - so I'm lead to believe it isn't a software/firmware issue.
yeah thats why I was curious if it would go into download mode with the charger plugged in. I accidentally did this one time and remembered it here. If he plugs in his charger with battery out and it will go into download mode. then somethings up with the PC's USB port. But if it wont, then well the issue can only be in the phone at that point.
You said before you were plugging directly into your computer and not a USB hub. So, maybe that means your computer isn't powering, or isn't supplying enough power, to its USB ports?
If you're willing to drop a little cash, here's a possibility... pick up a Powered USB hub (i.e. one that has an AC adapter), and try Odin with the hub plugged into the computer, the phone plugged in and nothing else. Experts, please debunk if you theorize this wouldn't work for any reason, I'm just going from an "insufficient USB power" approach.

Here's a question. Does Odin see your phone when you pull the battery and plug it into your computer? Even if your phone doesn't display that its in download mode. I realize that sounds ridiculous but my phone does this and perhaps its happened to you. The only way I can get my phone to display that its into download mode is to reboot from recovery.

I think my phone may be hard bricked.
I was trying to follow the steps in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1141550, when I ran into the situation I'm now in.
I followed all of the steps perfectly with the exception of rebooting to recovery, I accidentally rebooted normally. After it had started up and sat for about 5 minutes or so, I rebooted back to recovery. I reflashed the ext4 zip, then Black Ice ROM, and then Bali 3.1. I went to the voodoo menu and disabled both options and told the phone to reboot again.
It sat at the SGS4G screen for 20 minutes and I never heard linda speak during this entire time. I got tired of waiting and pulled the battery. Now the only thing I ever get is the SGS4g screen. I let it sit that way while I slept and when I woke up 3-4 hours later it was still on that screen. I've tried following the advice given in the thread mentioned above to put it back into download or recovery with no luck.
When I connect the phone to the PC instead of recognizing it, it complains about it and immediately makes the USB disconnect sound. If I leave it plugged in every 5-10 minutes or so it'll pop up the warning in the system tray again, and make the USB disconnect sound. If I unplug the phone from USB, the battery charging screen stays on. If I plug back in to USB at this point it'll make the sound like it's connected but never shows in Windows device manager, 'adb devices', or in ODIN. Any ideas before I call it a hardbrick and try to take it back to the store?

I've tried pulling the battery and putting it back in so it's fully shut down before holding the volume keys and connecting USB. It makes the USB connect sound and quickly makes the USB disconnect sound, gets the popup in my system tray saying it's an unrecognized USB device and doesn't go to download or a yellow triangle screen. Doesn't appear in ODIN or 'adb devices'. I've tried it this way repeatedly since last night.
I've also tried waiting until it's on the battery charging screen to pull the USB cable. It stays on the battery charging screen even though it's obviously not charging anymore. I hold the volume buttons anyways and plug the USB cable back in, and it makes the connect sound but it still never goes to download mode. I've tried it this way several times as well.
I've put my phone into download mode many times before so I can't imagine my method is wrong, I'm not doing it any differently than I ever have before. It's just behaving strangely. I've never had it stick on the battery charging screen before when I unplug the USB cable...

Hey. I had the same exact problem. I couldn't get into download mode...and thus no odin. Look in the bible. There is a guide on how to get into download mode multiple ways. I used method 2. After that, follow the guide to flash using odin, also in the bible. hope you get it fixed.

I love this forum. Thanks to all who helped.

Is it a possibility that the phone is on but the screen is not?
Check to see if the computer will recognize it.
Have you tried the 3 button combo to get to fastboot to see if it'll turn on?

plug it into a wall charger, the one that came with it, or better yet one that is more powerful and let it sit for a while then try to hold the volume buttons to get to fastboot or recovery where you can let it sit and charge fully before flashing anything. If it will not charge off the wall you will have to use the Macgyver method that involves splicing a cable to charge the battery directly. It is really quite easy to do, so don't worry. Essentially you just need to get power to the phone so you can flash then charge the battery. take a usb cable (make sure it is not your only micro usb for the phone, any old usb cable will work but you will need a normal one too) and cut the end off. strip the red and black wires a few millimeters and get those to contact between the battery + and - (red to + black to -)and the terminals on the phone with the battery in and plug that into your computer. MAKE SURE YOU ONLY TOUCH TO THE CORRECT TERMINALS OR YOU WILL LIKELY FRY YOUR PHONE AND/OR BATTERY. get into fastboot, plug in a normal usb cable leaving the direct to battery one, and flash as fast as possible, the 5 volts is a bit much to charge the battery with and could damage it if left for a long time. once you are up and running again remove the macgyver cable and charge it up normally. I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY IF THIS HURTS YOUR PHONE.!!!!

You can try buying a charger for the battery on ebay that can charge it out of the phone. If you have a multimeter test the battery voltage and see if it is at or above the listed voltage (3.7 i think), that will tell you if it is charged or not.

You need to micguyver the battery to charge. I had the same problem.go down to AT&T and swap a battery out to see if it works?

Take the battery out and plug it into the charger, then insert the battery while still on the charger. You should see the battery icon come up on the screen, power up holding the volume up and down buttons and it should boot into the menu giving you the fastboot option, choose fastboot then flash using RSD
thank you all for your kind replays but nothing worked for me
i even borrowed a fully charged battery from my friend but nothing worked
i think my phone is dead .

------------- Have you found any solution ?
The same happened to me and the white light in the upper right corner is lit when the phone is connected to my laptop via USB. No response or any light or anything while even connected to power source through charger. No one , two volume button combination working.

You may also have a bad USB cable. They do have a lifespan, as with anything else (I've gone through 2 or so in 10 months) especially if used/plugged in and out from your phone to USB to charger more than an average user may.
Also, if you're battery is very low and is on the verge of a shutoff, your laptop's USB might not be adequate to give enough voltage/mA to the battery to charge it -and more so if it actually does shut off. The charging time depends on the charging current. Wall charger is around 850-1000ma, USB is usually around 500ma (for some older PC laptops, it could be as low as 200ma) That said, charging from a wall outlet power source will be (or should be) faster than vis USB to PC charging. The MB865's battery capacity is generally around 1735mA, so 1735รท1000= 1.73 hours to full charge from full discharge.

dunno if this will help, there was this one time when I was playing scramble and suddenly the phone switched off and just wouldnt turn back on. Tried charging it and a white notification light was turned on continuosly without any of the general charging screen notificatn (battery indicator)
What helped me was tht I removed the batt, set it back, charged it for an hour or so, turned off the charger and tried to turn it back again, luckily it worked out for me. See it it helps.
Couple things: one as apex said, charge with the stock charger if possible. If you only have a PC, DO NOT use a front USB slot. As they are lower power slots than the rear ones.
Also, try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28384402
Make sure that if jims post helps you to hit the thanks button for him.

I have the same problem as him, thus I guess it's hard brick not 100% sure as Jim helped me out with some things but still i'm out of luck..
Found the reason rsd showing me these 3 errors, somewhy the drivers installed by Motorola Manager done some troubles, so I installed the PDAnet drivers (shows as 'ADB interface' now) and all the proccess went fine, even though the previous failed.
ive tried holding the power and the power+vol down buttons for well over a minute i let it charge for over an hour but it wont turn on.
its got the latest lineage os on it with magisk.
Does it have any indicator at all of life? USB presence? Charging indicator? If not, the battery may have fallen so low that the charge circuit can't detect its presence and therefore you can't charge it. I once rescued a Nexus 4 from this state by hooking 5v directly to the battery for a few seconds until it had enough power to be detected and start charging.

First off Happy Holidays,
Second I am truly sorry for your situation.
Plug the device into a PC and try to power up?
I get that people like to install custom software but on a brand new device with vanilla Android I really don't understand why?
Why run the risk of voiding your warranty and running into a situation that you can't get out of? It is possible that the software you installed is part of the problem.
Maybe there is a way you can reinstall Google's android through a PC and see if it will boot up.
Google Pixel - Update and Software Repair
I get people don't love all of Google's services but you did buy a Pixel.
I hope the OP can figure out a way to get his device up and running again.
it wont turn on at all. fastboot wont find it.

When you plug it up, do you get a chime on your computer?
no
Did you try a different charger?
yes
found out what was wrong. mobo died had to send in replacement close the thread.
R.I.P.
Happen to my P6P... RMA to Google.
Certainly a coincidence that the MOBO died when the battery is discharged...however, a little research will bring to light that it is NOT good to ever let a lithium battery go completely dead. YMMV
