[Q] AT&T Captivate: OS Update...Any Update! - Captivate General

I must admit that I tired of chasing AT&T & Samsung as to when the Gingerbread update would be available awhile back.
Then I saw an ad on TV that I'm pretty sure was for AT&T but another Android-based phone & they were hyping that the phone was equipped w/Android OS 4.0 so that it now rivaled the 'iCrap' phone.
Would someone please set me straight on which legit OS's have or are soon to be released confused for the Cappy, or any new Samsung phone at that!
Thanks!

[Q] Android OS 2.3+ Who is moving up?

So i currently have a samsung vibrant but due to the fact that the update has yet to come still im going to sell it. Its clear that the vibrant wont go to 3.0 and the new UI and even if it did it would take an eternity. So the question now is where to from here? I could easily grab a G2 or nexus one, since they are stock and spec'd high they will make the jump to 3.0. Im not asking you guys to help me decide a purchase but i am asking what your bets are on what handsets are moving up to 2.3 and 3.0 and who will be left behind at froyo (if even that). Im certain the Evo will, its a flagship device, and the nexus one because its the Google phone. Im sure the G2 will as well because its new and stock.

excessive drooling due to Android 2.3

When will the Android 2.3 ROMs start showing up?
Soon as they get the bugs worked out
You can see working "tech demos" under the i9000 Galaxy forum as well as other Samsung forums.
AND... I think just about every other "major" brand of phone currently has someone working on it lol. Just need to browse around the dev forums and see if your phone has someone working on a port.
Thank you! I can't wait!!
Beat you guys to it

Look at the post date, january 5th. There are 2.3 ROMs out now for many phones, I don't think this question needed to be revived. :/
When will my motorola milestone will get 2.3!!!!
I really hope that hTC doesnt drag their feet on getting me 2.3 for my Incredible!
I would guess that 2.3 is still quite a ways off from manufacturer releases.

[Q] Samsung Infuse 2.2.1 Firmware Rooting Q's

So here's the scoop. I am a retired iPhone jail-breaker/dev-hacker and I am very familiar with the Apple OS, however because the iPhone/iPod has gotten so popular and overrated I recently switched to a droid. Unfortunately, [most] of this Android stuff is new to me.
That said, I bought the Samsung Infuse 4G offline from AT&T. From my understanding I was supposed to recieve the device in 2.2 firmware state, but I received it with 2.2.1 like a bad kick to the nuts.
Now my question is, is there any apps/programs out there capable of rooting the Infuse 4G's 2.2.1 firmware? Now before you jump down my throat, I did NUMEROUS searches with no success on the matter. Which leads me to my next question (if the first one is NO, as I have found), how can I downgrade to the 2.2 firmware so I can root this device?
Thanks ahead of time, I hope my transition from Apple OS can be a not-so-rough one!
Also should I give this a try...?

I don't want to end up with a brick if it don't work with 2.2.1; It doesn't say what firmware its for. Any ideas?
EDIT: ABOVE POST WORKED IN ROOTING MY PHONE
did you ever get this to work? I have the same phone and version.
I just did for 2.2.1. Problem was had the usb cable connected to a usb hub not direct duh

[Q] WP 8(Apollo) Update on Samsung Focus i917?

I have brought WP 7 Samsung Focus i917 recently. But knowing about the romoured features of Apollo update of Windows, I am very much tempted to have another new phone with Apollo OS. Is this the only chance for me or can I update the new Version of OS,i.e Apollo,on my Samsung Focus i917? Please reply me...Thanks in Advance
As far as I know 1st Gen and 2nd Gen phones should update to Apollo. Even if the carriers don't release it, cab sender on the development section will give it to us.

Really ? Are we going to start this discussion when there was just word about it released ? Wile we are at, it does <insert your WP7 model here> support the next OS ?
No specs have been given, no real details besides some "Possable" features. If you want removable SD cards, NO (as your phone does not support it at least externaly).
From what has been said....MAYBE, don't buy a device based on if it will be upgraded. Remember all the HD2 users who Tmo said it was upgradeable to WP7....
Also, never mind we have another year or so, in the real world...

I thought it was a little strange that the Glide is getting some Official ICS love but not the original Captivate.
Get used to disappointment!

Well it is a much newer device, you have to remember that too... Sadly AT&T sucks all around at getting updates to Android devices. I love how Apple gets to throw an update the IPhone all the time though.... makes real since, doesn't it???
Yep. Apple has a strangle hold on the carriers. Maybe as Samsung grows that can start pushing back again the carriers. I know its implausible but we all have to have a dream.
Also the iPhone has no bloatware.
Exactly because Apple specified that Att was not allowed to add bloatware

captivate glide has its own forum area. post there.

There is nothing wrong with the discussion of the Glide here in the context that it's being discussed. I'll leave it open unless I see confusion.
Thank you. This was more a discussion about the Glide getting the official nod and not the original cappy. Just curious since I never got my hands on a glide or read much about one. Is the hardware that much different?

I adjusted the thread title to make it more appropriate for this subforum.

Its a completely different phone... The keyboard alone makes a HUGE difference in the kernel.
Not to mention, it has a dual core tegra2 processor and double the ram.
Again.... completely different phone.
Based on what the CM9 Devs have said, our phone does not have the internal storage for ICS and TouchWiz. They had to resize the partitions to make room for ICS alone. This is also why there was talk of the "value package" thing.
Remember that unless it's a nexus, you will be getting some "flavored" version of android. It's also not unreasonable for manufacturers to do this, if they didn't then selling phones would be a purely hardware battle of who can push out the best spects. For us at xda it does not matter as much. Yet even for us going from our typical Samsung based ROMs to asop ICS there are features we had to get used to not having. For the general populous the "flavors" of android are a major factor to consider.
These flavors and the fact that apple does not have them is what allows for their "better" update record.
Also I would not be so quick to bash the carriers, there have been times when the manufacturer gave up on a phone but the carrier still pushed out updates.
But really, just accept that the phone is close to 2 years old, honeycomb was only a myth back then, and much of the visuals of 3.0 were not expected to ever come to phones. ICS is just that much of a change, so it's time to move on.
leaked from my ICS- FUSED SGS I897 contaminating you via XDA app.
Keep in mind that the Glide has a dual core processor, so that gives them an excuse to make it for the glide but not our lovely captivate
Thank you all for the additional information. Work has been hectic and I haven't gotten the chance to do as much reading lately. Now I feel like I'm somewhat caught up.
And I hope to see other "Captivate something" phones on AT&T. These folks will then come to us for help.
