From what I have read, Samsung & LG phones root easily and without incident but double check prior to purchase. It's the Motorola's and HTC's that pose problems.
For development, either get a phone you know will get a forum, ie Nexus Prime, or wait and see.
For speed, all the major carriers have good 4G in certain locations. They will tell you they have good service but buy one and try it and return it within the two week window if you do not like it. That two week window exists for that very purpose.
In the end, phone options and prices change every year so don't get all worked up about it, something better will be along.

Hmmm I don't know much about how much American phones cost but you should try and get either the SII, SII LTE or the Raider, both the LTE phones have well LTE...
Also if you want to root it and get wifi hotspot you need to buy a phone they don't have in their system so you have to buy one like a Razr or an EVO 3D or something like that and put your sim card in to it. Both those phones would work with their 3G+ network

For At & t if you tether it, you will lose your unlimited data, guaranteed. They can tell now even on rooted phones.
On that note, I'm using a Thrill 4g rooted, if your store still has that I'd recommend it.

hey guys, first post around here and I have a question for the masses. Currently I'm on AT&T with the Captivate but we are going to have to switch off Ma Bell due to coverage issues at our house (we are going cell-only). My decision to get the Captivate earlier was easy: I had to stay with AT&T and it easily the best phone they had. And I actually like the phone now that I've gotten a Froyo build and the GPS works. But now that we are out of contract I'm unsure where to go and what phone to get (or to wait).
I know that T-Mobile and Verizon get the best coverage at our house and those are the two carriers I'm considering. As far as Android phones are concerned, if I'm coming from the Captivate, which phone do you think I would be most satisfied with? Droid 2? G2? MyTouch 4G?
Or should I wait for this Nexus S to come out? Having quick updates is huge and as a former iPhone owner, its nice to not have the carriers put their grubby mitts on them.

nexus one, droid 2 or vibrant if you like the galaxy s series, but thats my opinion
T-Mobile has WiFi calling as well and that's a great asset to have. If you're 100% positive that T-Mobile has the coverage you need you should go with them and get a G2 or myTouch 4G.. the DEFY is nice but it's more mid-range. I would wait for FroYo before getting the Vibrant. Then you have Windows Phone 7 if you're looking at one of those.
See if T-Mobile is offering "4G" speeds in your area. If they are, you might want to grab the myTouch 4G or the G2. The G2 looks awesome IMO.
BTW, I used the GPS on a G2 and it was flawless

I vote for waiting on the Nexus S and at least see what it's about. If you get a phone and discover the Nexus S is a much better phone, you'll be kicking yourself for the next two years.

I personally love Android, and at this point in time, can't imagine using another smartphone OS.
Get a Microcell
If it is just a coverage issue, get an AT&T Microcell. No contract required, just uses your existing minutes and internet connection. I have one at work due to zero signal...works like a champ!

call ATT and politely tell them that you plan on leaving because the coverage inside your house is not up to par. when they send you to retention services, tell them that you'd stay if the coverage was better IN YOUR HOUSE and most likely they'll offer you a microcell for free

T-Mobile ---> G2 or HD7 depending on your stance on WP7

I like this option to start, I never thought of complaining to AT&T as a first step. Since I have other options, whats the worst that could happen, right? That broadband pipe is going to get some serious traffic . . .
For the other phone, I was thinking Droid X or G2. I love the design of the Cappy and in my opinion, the myTouch 4G and the Vibrant/Fascinate seem to be a step down. Most likely it will be the Droid X or waiting until the Nexus S "issue" is resolved. I'm a little skeptical of the G2 hinge after seeing it in store.
If you go with t mobile you can use your captivate until you figure out what phone you want. (if you unlock it)

that's what I thought. Same as using an iPhone on T-mobile. It'll work but you'll just be stuck on Edge like speeds.
Recieved a text from my wireless carrier stating that my tethering would be cut off or I can pay an additional $30 or so per month. I think it came down to me downloading the OS for an iphone 3gs I've been playing with. Last month I ended up with around 10gb of data usage.
Tried tethering after the deadline date and was directed to a site, stating I need to call customer service. I also tried using data on my phone at this point and was directed to the same site. Call customer service and was told to access their data I would need to give them my phones serial number. go figure.... after the past two years of playing with various phones, nexus one, vibrant, hd2, iphone 4, iphone 3gs, nexus s.... they want to know what Im using .....
Solution????
a different android phone again, with tethering.
or
drop my sim card into my iphone 3gs for a few hours and switch back to the mytouch 4g

Seeing as how you are getting the same site from the phone browser and the computer browser, it seems they just assume, not know you are tethering. The hold should go off after your billing month is up. If not, well do they know you have a smart phone, or are you using it on a feature phone plan? If it is the later, then giving them a smart phone serial will probably make them change your plan to a smart phone plan.
I heard if you use the stock tethering app they charge you... what if you use the one that's built into CM 7? isn't that the same as using android-wifi-teather? I was always unclear about that
Well I have been using mytouch 4g and were using the original tether option and now I'm using cm7.never have had any problems.

Well for lite usage you won't have problem. But if you are using bandwidth excessively they will notice it and based on using DPI/SPI techniques they can determine which service and protocol is being used. They would never want people to use free bandwidth when they can get people to pay money for same exact thing. Talk about milking the cow for all its worth lol.
Before the mytouch I had a hd7 and before that the first 4g I had was the g2..download were massive and big..never got caught...I was always using the stock T-Mobile tether option..I guess cus I'm on an old unlimited android web plan...

Yes I did milk it, downloading the os for the iphone probably did it, will wait till cycle is over and do basic tethering again. Im going to my iphone and switch back to see if that works as well.

tried the other iphone and switch back , no luck . Im on cm7, and have been for awhile, tethered for over a year and now its being stopped. What are the links to and which one do I need for the mytouch? As for carrier its a local one , cbw,

Yes I do use the tethering hotpsot often for internet at home. I downloaded the app you recommend, will test it out for awhile to see if itll make a difference and still allow me to tether.
I'm having conflicting information put my way about tethering. Is T-Mobile charging for using the WiFi Tether feature in froyo, or are they charging for the Wired Tether feature.
I can't even get a straight answer from store reps or customer service. It's like they don't even know themselves.
Trying to basically find out if I need to go back to using barnacle.
Update-June 1: If you have a Android data package Tethering is FREE.

I'm not with tmobile, I have been using android phones for over a year plus, starting with the nexus one. I have always been tethering and kept my data around 5-6gbs per month. Last month I hit the 11 or 12gb mark, and within the first week of the new month I was already up to 3.5gbs. Mainly from downloading the Iphone OS, and other tools I needed.
Over the past year, I never once was charged for tethering nor was I warned about it. You shouldn't need to worry about tethering with tmobile, if you hit the 5gb of data they will cut your speeds. I download the tethering app from the first page of this post, and it seems to be working fine as of now.

I've been on AT&T with an Xperia X10 for sometime now, but my family's broken up and I have to give up this plan. I've looked around for a new service that's cheap but has everything I want, and Sprint seems to be the way to go.
After having an X10 i've learned that I want a phone that will be guaranteed updates, CM7 Support, and massive development, so the Nexus S seems to be the choice, not really wanting an LG or HTC.
I'm curious about pros and con's of this phones. XDA's satisfaction level.
I've read about no SD card slot, simtoolkit, lack of 720p recording, horrible battery life, Spring told me themselves no Tethering, just "mobile hotspots" with their plan, and no 4g toggle, that the 4g always remains on, negating the gift of power control.
So I ask for some input on the Nexus S rooted vs unrooted, stock vs the best roms on this forum, and what the dev's have made this phone able to do, that the Sprint stock models could not.
Is going from AT&T's X10 to Sprints Nexus S a good choice for an XDA junkie?
I'm in the UK, so do not really know much about US networks, but I've owned an X10i for a year, just sold mine this Monday got a Nexus S yesterday, all I can say is, best decision ever.
X10i is a lag fest, a disaster, Nexus S is pretty fast, I'm yet to experience any slow down whatsoever, also the screen is mighty impressive, everything about the phone rocks. My brother has a HTC Sensation and my Nexus S performs better than his, even with the whole dual core business.
Seriously, get a Nexus, you won't be disappointed. In my opinion, the only phone better than the Nexus S right now is the Galaxy S II.
Sprint rep didn't know what he was talking about. Out of the box you get free 3g tether... forever. For 4g tether you'll have to root it. How easy it is to root? I got two words ... fastboot unlock. And no updates will break or unroot your phone.
Its a great phone and battery life is actually very good. You can't go wrong with a Nexus phone whichever you choose.
Also, I may add that Sprint rocks as a company.

Thanks guys, i'm definitely going to make this choice. I'm not satisfied with how Sony has been, even though the x10 is suppose to get 2.3 next month.

Coverage is on par. But, it isn't phenomenal. The Nexus is well worth another contract to me. I get 1x at my house, but 3g everywhere else. You can download a toggle switch from the market for 4g and I am pretty sure you can adjust it within settings.

So, I am heading off to college and I want to get a smart phone. But I am way too cheap to pay for a data plan from a major carrier.
I currently have a Net10 brick phone and use their $30 for 60 days cards. So, I am essentially paying a $15/month service. I like the idea of Net10's "bring your own phone" plan that is $50/month with unlimited everything.
I have decided that what ever phone I may get, it needs to be under $250, run Android 4+, have a dual-core 1GHz or higher, and have 4G capability.
Now, I really like the Samsung Galaxy S2 and I can get one from eBay used for around $250, but I found the BLU Quattro 4.5 for $240 and it looks like one heck of a phone for the price. So my question is, which one should I get, or should I get something else?

I just received the Blu Quattro 4.5 from Amazon. It's a great phone, crazy fast. It doesn't support 4G LTE, but I'm pretty sure it will work on Tmobile's H+ 4G, haven't tried it yet though. Also Tmobile now does unlimited plans with 500MB data for $50/month no contract.
I see what the development for the Blu Quattro is and compare things like micro SD and removeable battery. If you're buying the phone yourself I think being able to replace the battery will really extend the life of the device and save you trouble. I'd check the bands against your provider and service area.
Just taking a peek, the SII has multiple 4.2.2 ROMs. Another quick look doesn't really turn up anything for the other phone. Something like re-flashing the stock ROM can save you in some situations even if you haven't used custom ROMs. Things can go wrong.
T-Mobile still has the 100min/unlimited text/5Gb 4G data plan through WAL*MART if that's enough minutes for you or you'd be able to call over VOIP (data or wifi) to extend that.
Boost mobile .....the plans shrink as you pay on time and the phone are pretty cheap....unlimited everything

Ok, can someone help me. I want to switch to Tmobile because in my area Data is 10x faster with them. I have to bring my daughters as well. I'm an Android junky, they are not. My question is, will sprint I phone 4s work on tmobile? Tmo says I have to have sprint unlock them, then I can put Tmo sim in and we're good. Is that true? Will it work on Tmo 4g? And will Sprint unlock easily? Thanks. I'm just gonna wait on the ONE to switch mine, but my kids don't know the joy of Android

Sprint is on a PCS network and Tmobile uses GSM. They are totally different. You could bring an ATT IPhone to Tmoblie.
You should try to get your daughters away from those IPhones...

Yes, the 4S has a GSM SIM card that can be unlocked, but they're not still not going to want to let you use it on a domestic carrier - they will generally unlock for a customer in good standing for international use. Looking at some threads about people trying to get the Sprint 4S to work on T-Mobile it looks like way too much hassle requiring special equipment (at least at one point in time) and with poor results when it comes to function on T-Mobile's network. The phones also need to be jailbroken because Apple is cooperating with Sprint to not allow you to take the Sprint phone to another domestic carrier's network - this brings a whole new set of potential problems.
If you really want to try it, Google it and see what it would take on your part. Personally, I wouldn't want to do something like that with a kid's phone unless they were going to understand the process and be responsible and able to troubleshoot if things went wrong (same reason I wouldn't root a kid's phone for them without them understanding what's going on and the problems they might face and how to fix them).
Unless they're deeply invested in Apple's market, I'd sell the 4S's and get them N4's or S2's or something. This doesn't have to do with any personal dislike for iPhones - but for the fact that if you're going to go with T-Mobile their ability to get a signal and what kind of signal will depend on the local network and what work T-Mobile has done, even if you traded the Sprint models for factory unlocked ones. They may end up only ever getting 2g, they might have poor coverage due to lack of 1700MHz and more. And since they're your daughters I'd guess you want to make sure they can get a signal no matter where they are in case there's an emergency. I would explain things to them like adults - explain the reason you want to switch services and the impact on them if they choose to stay with an iPhone, show them how Android is really not all that different - teach them about making informed choices and to understand why they are making a certain choice.
