With CES and MWC 2012 right around the corner I was wondering what you guys think about the new phone announcements coming? I just purchased the skyrocket(white) less than a month ago and with my 30 return warranty ending in only two days is it a good idea to return it? I love it but I am a phone junkie and am always going to want the latest tech. I know right now 720p screens are in and although I like the skyrockets screen(using lcd densiity to convert it to 720p) I am still eventually going to want the real deal. Amoled HD is crisp on GNex. Technology is moving so quickly and I know its past the time we should be seeing more REAL innovation. Somebodies gonna up the ante at one of these expos and I know it. I figure I could return it and use my Captivate(ICS 4.03 Flashed) until I see whats coming and if I want the skyrocket back I could always just get another one if I dont see too much of competition to it. I will go crazy if GSIII is announced to be coming in a few months. I know its possible since GNEx is a Google phone and doesnt really count as Samsungs Flagship release so their next release should be coming(Probably GNote AT&T). Sound off in the poll!!
no matter what, something better is always coming so you can't go off of that. but in this case, remember that devices announced at CES won't be on sale that day or anything. some might come out in q1, others in q3 so its up to you on if you want to hold off and jump on one of those devices.
If your waiting for the SGS III, it'll probably have the same release schedule as the SGS II, so you'll most likely wait a year to get it.
I say stick with the skyrocket, and sell it if you must have the international version ASAP, but only till you know the release date.

I know it isnt really possible to really have the BEST phone mainly because different people like different things. I do however feel that newer technology like Amoled hd and similar 720p screens will be the standard since ICS 4.0 is native 720p. More than anything I think the screen is getting left behind. 720p is such a huge jump from 480x800. Thats the only thing this phone is missing in my opinion.
Why return the phone?? (CES) Those new phones don't come out till 6months a year later. ... just saying..

Don't worry, Samsung can probably modify the screen density to make it look like 720p.

One reason is once your contract is up and you have no upgrade then theres two years before you can purchase a subsidized phone. With the advancements you can get better bang for your buck with a little patience...

Well there will always be something new and shiny coming out. Personnaly im gunna keep my SR because there will always be something better. And because i dont have any upgrades
if you can stick it out with the captivate for another 6 months then i would return it.
I will return it and wait for CES. I am looking forward to Gnote myself. At this point, that is the only phone that I am looking forward to.. Like what you said, you can always get your Skyrocket back.
i am keeping mine. why? it is an INSANELY well specced phone, and i have it right now. and i can tweak it to extreme. if something THAT good comes out, i might sell and buy it, but i love my skyrocket, and the CM7 alpha is running fine. it is your choice, but i am happy with mine.
Personally, I think pixel density over like 250 is highly overrated. I've looked at some of the full-HD phones, and I personally find the extent to which it adds clarity to details over qHD to be negligible to my tired eyes. It isn't solving a really problem.
The flip side is that running in 720p native is a much greater strain on your GPU. It's going to take almost triple the pixels to fill the screen, which means you're going to smash your framerate on fill-rate intensive games and such. To me, I'd rather the phone be fast and snappy than worry about how it looks when I really squint.
Sometimes it's more about the right combination of tech than one particular part. Maybe when Tegra 3 rolls around, that HD screen will seem a lot more attractive, but for today's chipsets, qHD is probably a better choice.

After reading your comment about the screen density, I went ahead and purchased the lcd density app on android market and was wondering how much density did you use on your phone.
Be careful. If you change the density. Most apps will say device not compatible on the market, and wont let you download unless you change it back.

I use 720p settings. Its as crisp as it can get. I have no problems whatsover by usin go launcher ex, go phone and contacts, and go sms...been running it for weeks and have not had a single problem in market. Look at big buck bunny in youtube hd normal settings then switch to 720p and be blown away..I have several hd gameloft games that play perfect also....The quality difference is night and day..I tried comparing to GNex with my phone on 720p settings but couldnt pull up the video on GNex at Verizon...Amoled Hd is ridiculously crisp abd its the main reason I want to switch my skyrocket now...I cant lose all the benefits of skyrocket for GNex though...I use the free app LCD Resolution though..

I want to get a new phone but its crazy how so may phones come out so quickly and out-dating the other...I feel like just getting the Iphone 5 and stick with that, at least there wont be a million choices like with android and get tempted to keep switching back and forth, I swear with android its like a new phone thats better comes out shortly after one phone comes out.
Anyone think they know what IP5 might have? Dual Core, better screen, different design, better Camera?

Note how that article says samsung is thinking of a 2ghz device sometime next year, NOT this year, then there is speculation that the device is the SGS3, and then there is someone doing even further speculation that it could come out this fall, even though we know this is impossible partly because the SGS2 variant for verizon probably won't be out until a couple months before then at best based on current news. This is just overspeculation leading to insane predictions. SGS3 in Jan or Feb next year is possible though if Tegra 3 is out by then though, as samsung will want to compete, but that's just my own speculation and have no factual data backing it as well.
Meh, I like having the highest tiered phone as much as the next guy so something new/awesome coming out right after I got the past top tier phone is a little irritating, however having new things out is always great.
I can't see me needing anything stronger than the Galaxy S 2; I would love a 4.5 inch screen but 4.3 and the specs it has is great.
The Wonders of competition I'd rather they were doing this than have technology move very slowly, Just pick a phone you like, Not slow, looks good, nice screen, decent camera and then stick with it

Agreed. You can drive yourself insane waiting for the perfect device. Pick whatever suits you best when you need a new phone and stick with it for a year or two or until you genuinely need more power.
I stuck with my mt3g as long as I could. Now I have the mt4g and love it! I don't anticipate outgrowing it any time soon.

Well you're not alone. It's not like software/graphics wise, it's keeping up with the hardware. I don't really see any game that's pushing the tegra devices to their limit, or even power vr sgx540.
So point being, even if hardware improves dramatically next year, last year's phones will still keep up with what today demands.
sgs2 is already out, just not in north america yet.

Lulzy.
I don't see a problem with SGS the Third coming out next year... one solid leap forward every year sounds perfectly legitimate to me so long as the tech and improvements are keeping pace.
Yeah. I'm a little knicked that I got a great phone (HTC HD2) released here in the US a little over a year ago, then the next thing I know it's EVO with Android, no Android for the HD2 (still the best hardware out there) and no Windows Phone 7 upgrade for the HD2 either from TMO. Now I'm trolling XDA and trying to put together the info and ability (and trying to work up the balls) to set up my HD2 on a dual boot with Android on SD and WinMo 6.5 NAND.
It gets old.
wth!!! how look that? i think really better than GS2
I have 90 days to return my phone at Costco so I'm wondering what the next best phone will be and will it be out within my 90 day window?
You can wait for the G2X to come in stock at which point hopefully all of its issues will be resolved. As for almost 90 days from now..I'm sure you'll have more options.

Check this out.
I'd get as close to the 90 days as possible and get a Hercules personally.
If ya can wait till the end of summer, the Hercules will be the most powerful, feature rich device TMo will release in 2011(most likely). That's if all goes well with production. You also need to like holding tablet to your face.... It's a 4.5" beast. Good thing about the Hercules is that it is reported to have AT&T radios, so you'd covered when TMo get swallowed up.
Keep in mind though, pretty much every early review of the Sensation 4G said it was compatible with At&T...only later to be dismissed as false.
Only bad thing, imo, is that's it's made by Sammy. They use way too much plastic in their cell phones for my personal taste. I've never held a Samsung phone that felt like high quality in hand. That will still not prevent me from checking it out and possible making the purchase. AMOLED is nice but for me is too colorized.
I like big screens, but one would think 4.5" or maybe 4.7" will eventually be the acceptable limit for cell phones...but who knows...It'll probably hit 5" eventually. If it has a 16:9 aspect ratio like the Sensation, then it won't be too wide at least.

I'm assuming you've never held a Samsung Captivate. at&t's variant of the SGS was by far the best. I've never had a higher build-quality phone except my trusty Nokia 3390 Gold (the first AIM phone) that took a dive in a swimming pool and still worked when I pulled the battery out and let it dry for 5 days. Its all about how much the carrier is willing to invest in the making of the phone and how much they will actually subsidize. It's not Samsung's fault the carriers are cheap LOL

they lost me at 4.5" screen with only 480 x 800 resolution... S AMOLED + screen or not.
Samsung needs to bump that up.
rest of the specs look good.
I do not have the sensation quite yet but I have had quite a few phones including the Verizon variant of the SGS. I said I would never buy another samsung device because of extremely slow upgrades and lack of developer support for the Samsung devices.
That being said it seems that has completely changed. Samsung is moving fast to catch up with upgrades and since HTC is locking bootloaders developers are moving to the platforms that are more open.
So if i was to give my opinions. HTC has been my favorite manufacturer for quite sometime but the Fascinate (Verizon SGS) was one of the best android devices i've ever owned. Good battery life, good performance, fantastic screen, Crappy interface(Touchwiz 4.0 is much better), and super thin and light.
I know i didn't answer your question directly but hopefully my convoluted answer is of some help lol..
Isn't that the Million Dollar Question? The specs on the Hercules showed it not having an Exynos Chipset, and instead using the same Qualcomm that's in our Sensation. It should look almost identical to the ATT Inspire with a 4.5 SAMOLED+/480x800 screen. After using my thunderbolt with a 480 x 800 4.3 inch screen and my Sensation with a qHD display it now seems silly for devices with giant screens to not at least be qHD. All it does is make the icons and text larger. Maybe it's cool for old people, but I now love the extra usable real estate on my screen.
So true.... That 4.5in screen deserves nope demands a qHD display
Such a shame... I would have killed for it. Oh well maybe in another six months

I seriously think that the G2x is the best phone in the T-Mobile line up.
Unlocked bootloader
Vanilla Android
Super Snappy
HDMI port
Tegra 2 processor
Great build quality
Great GPS
Great data reception
8mp camera
Tegra Games
Cyanogen and many others developing for it.
And is just 2.2 Froyo, This phone will be even better when 2.3 comes out.
Despites the issues people have been having with the G2x which most if not all are software, I do believe that there isn't a better phone in the T-Mobile lineup as of now.
Sensation is a good phone but not just as good as the G2x.
Hi all. I know that there are countless topics on this but I'd just like your opinion on it.
Facts:
I recently sold my Galaxy Tab and Incredible S. Now just using an x10 mini pro my friend gave me for Christmas. I don't have disposable income as I'm still studying, taking up an MBA and law dual degree program.
The Galaxy S II was released May, and in my country it was released July. The Nexus S was released December, and in my country it was released March.
Question:
Should I bother waiting for the Nexus Prime considering that in my country it gets released more or less 3 months later? Will the specs be that different that I would regret buying the S2? ICS will get released on the S2 for sure, right? Will the new features come out in the S2 or will Samsung cripple it?
Personally, I will wait as long as it takes to get a phone with 1280x720 resolution.
SGS2 will get ics, but definitely not when it is released. It has to go thru samsung QA and your carrier QA which is bound to take lot of time.
So if you rely on updates from manufacturer/carrier then wait for nexus. If you are a flasher then buy the sgs2, it is a great phone.

Thanks. One other worry of mine is Samsung's quality control. With all of the issues I've read in the forums it seems like I have to check out a lot of things when I end up buying it.
So far the issues I have to check:
Dead pixels
Yellow tinting (pull down notification bar at 0-20% brightness)
Camera pink spot
What else?
I am not having the yellow tint or camera pink spot like many others. Ofcourse by the time you want to buy Nexus Prime, there will be something better in the making
As you said you are studying perhaps it makes sense to buy a phone for your needs which can atleast stay there for next 2-3 years.
I totally love SGS2, Games, High def videos, palyback movies almost all formats, customized roms for playing around and most or all its not so easy to brick this phone
Ofcourse I dont like the battery life but again this is the most powerful phone at this moment and it needs to consume battery to sustain
Finally got one! I'm loving it!
Decided not to fuss over the yellow discoloration. Just checked for dead pixels.

I have been in the same boat, do I get this, do I wait for the next big thing, if I waited for the next super phone before buying one, I would never buy one, if you know what I mean...

Wait until 5.0... I heard that'll be the bees knees

Great choice mate! If you wait you'll be a waiting freak forever. just buy whats available instead of waiting months. many things can happen in months.
unless Prime is going to be released by few days time then thats the situation you should wait.
i might get Prime as secondary phone though. or at least a Nexus S. haha~
btw change your sig already will ya? at least edit it.
I own i9100.
If you want to wait, before wait for reviews of nexus prime.
If microphone will be better of i9100 (stereo mic and speaker, 96 sample rate, voodoo control) i should buy nexus prime.
I think only microphone is crap in i9100 as is not possible to optimize with vodoo control.
Nexus prime will have super amoled hd, i don't know but i think it will be better to wait for super amoled hd plus as it have rgb, i9100 has super amoled plus.
I assume to wait for super amoled hd plus if nexus prime is not so much different from i9100.

I have a Thunderbolt and due to the length of time I have been with Verizon and issues I have had, they are giving me a new phone of my choice (not a refurb).
What phone would you all go to (those who root and use custom ROMs) if you had your choice of any phone. Keep in mind I have always liked Sense Rom's but have never had a Motorola phone or a Nexus.
Please let me know!!!!

I'm personally not very fond of Sense & Motoblur UI. I would suggest the Galaxy Nexus, especially if they are giving you a new phone (hopefully free for you) and one of the major reasons why I would is first and foremost the HD Super AMOLED screen in general PLUS it having a 1280x720 resolution on that beautiful 4.6" screen (black pixels actually turn off instead of illuminating and looking wasted out and colors are 10X more vibrant), the 1.2GHz dual-core processor, PURE Google phone so no custom UI and you get all the updates before any other phone, Android 4.0 (Mmm), 1850mAh battery (soooo much better than the Thunderbolt) and 1080p video recording.
For me that is the only phone that I would go with, especially as far as what phones are out now on Verizon (which aren't that impressive). That HD Super AMOLED screen is just too sweet to pass up!

In my opinion I would say so because the Razr has an ugly amount of bezel around the LCD and the resolution is only 960x540 and has the Motoblur overlay and the Rezound is not too bad of a phone, I am just not too much of a fan of the Sense overlay either. I'm not sure but I think quad-core phones won't appear until around Quarter 2 or so of 2012.
Waiting is always not a bad idea, but the Galaxy Nexus is definitely worth it, again IMO. haha hopefully I was some help.

I'm basically the same boat, and but I was told that I could have anything but the Nexus, which is very disappointing. My story is in a different thread further down...

Find out the most expensive phone they'll give you. Take that value, presuming it's lower than the Nexus, and offer to pay the difference.
howd you get a replacement? They sent me like 5 refurbs. Then finally they sent me a bionic, refurb, and I'm not real thrilled with it. It keeps forcing updates then failing and losing all my data. Kinda tired of dealing with these issues after paying 2400+ a year. At this point I would like to see if the rezound is any better, but they want me to shell out another 250 for the "privilege" of an early upgrade.

I have a business account with several phones which allows me certain "perks"
Don't get a Charge
I had 2 thunderbolts and then did the charge when the random reboot started. Waited for the TB and glad I went back no comparison. Slow, everything, gps, data, email etc. Had a TB a month now and loving it.
I liked my bolt before it was rooted, now that it's rooted I love the sh*t out of it....but if you're in the mood for a change, I agree with the recommendation for the Nexus. I got to play with one for a good hour or so last week and really fell in love. I'm not 100% sure if it was the hardware or ICS that really appealed to me, but since you can get both at the same time, why not go for it?
I personally like the RAZR quite a bit too, but all things being equal, Nexus seems like the way to go.
I'm in the wait crowd. I want the specs of the nexus, but its got some important omissions. The GPU isn't up to snuff for a brand new top of the line phone, and its got no expansion slot for a microsd card. And, did I read the battery isn't user changeable?
I was excited by the nexus, but if the SGS3 is quad core, Super amoled HD (RGB, not pentile) and it can take a memo card, its worth the wait. I'm not so excited about the nexus since it came out.

Hey, sorry about being away, for a while, long story. But the first one that I bought came with bad light leaks. The second one came badly scractched and dented. The next one was the one I had the bulk of the time, but the headphone jack ended up dieing. I was sent a replacement for that which came with a broken ear piece. The final one came with a damaged battery cover, which I just swapped with the previous phone, so no big deal.
The biggest complaint I have had is that they tried to charge me for one of the phones I had sent back, which took at least a half dozen calls and many hours to get fixed. They had sent me text messages saying that they had recieved the phone, but then a series of text messages saying that they were going to charge me for the phone not being returned. It took taking to a manager to check the future bills and a couple forms filled out for them to refund the charge.
More later...

I'm on my 7th or 8th Thunderbolt. I've been having intermittent POP3 email problems ever since I've had the phone(s). I went to a Verizon store a couple of times recently when I had the issue and noticed that with the exact same settings, the Galaxy and the Rezound worked while the Thunderbolt did not. The Bionic and Razr also did not work.
Anyway, they won't let me have anything except for a Charge or Revolution. I think the Revolution is a lesser phone than the Thunderbolt, and I don't know if my POP3 account would work on the Charge. I would've tried it out, but either the store didn't have it or it wasn't working if they did.
Has anyone come across this same issue before? If so, what amount (and nature) of convincing did it take to get them to offer something better?

Droid Maxx seems like a contender... just sayin. I have had my T-bolt for a year now and never had any issues with it
Just found out that the galaxy s3 for the US will have the same CPU as
The one x. It will also come with 2gb of ram, which is a real plus. What would you guys do in this situation. I'm still kind of worried about that pentile screen, have to see it in person but I dont have much time left.
The 3 main criteria for me are screen quality, camera quality and feel of the device. I really dislike the screens on Samsung devices. All things considered, I'd be miserable looking at that display as a trade for questionable improvements in speed. A larger SD card, while a great option, isn't something I really need.
Build quality is also a big deal. I like the feel of the one x more than any other Android device I've handled. The S2 variants left me feeling like I had a bargain phone in hand.
I've heard great things about the camera on the S3, but while I'm still having some trouble in generating the type of shots I'd like with the HOX it's an excellent outdoor shooter.
THE END

I'd hate to say it, but I'm kind of in the same boat. I was dead set on this phone once Samsung made their announcement (was a toss up between the GNex, the GSIII or the HOX). I figured the awesome dev folks around here would get the phone unlocked so we could eventually run some stock form of ICS (which was a successful bet!). But the issues the phone has (WiFi BS, the lagging in the games, the frustrations with multitasking-esque stuff) are annoying. I was really hoping AT&T would be pushing out their fix soon to address at least the WiFi, but I was hoping for too much I guess. After this phone, I don't think I'll every be buying another subsidized phone again. I'd rather just roll with the Nexus line so I can freely do what I want with the phone.

A lot of the issues with the one x have been fixed with the latest ruu, and some nice tweaks have been made with the few rims we have now. Just wait until we get the kernel source and watch our battery and performance skyrocket. Imo, stick with one x and wait for the goodies to come.

Thanks for the replies but I think I'm gonna be returning it and see what the Samsung can do. I can always come back to the hox if it fails to impress.

I have a question...are these goodies you are talking about only going to come to those who are rooted? Is there expected to be an official release that fixes some of the issues I am having? My Wifi radio stinks and the cell radio is less than optimum. However, because I love the screen so much, I'm sticking with my HOX for right now.
I got mine at Wal-Mart for $158, and they told me I had 15 days. I wonder if that is just the window to return it and void the contract extension, or if I'm out of my window entirely? Although there is a lot I love about my HOX, That 2GB of RAM really has me squirming, together with the lockdownedness of the HTC.

I have (had? Cuz its broken) a skyrocket and the dev work was really slow at first. Once we got the ICS leak, things got much better.
Also, once more of these get into people hands, it'll take off. I'm hoping to get one tomorrow finally! Using an N1 is starting to get frustrating!

I guess I lucked out, got my HOX on May 10th from Best Buy with 90 day return policy. So I'll be checking out the GS3 on AT&T when it comes out this month.

The leaked 1.85 RUU has an updated radio, which may help your WiFi and cell reception issues. Its impossible to say for sure, but I'd be willing to bet its only a matter of time before this version (or something even newer) is made available as an official OTA.
After owning the Atrix, which had double the RAM and CPU of the original Galaxy S... I'd rather have a better screen.. Sure the One X has software issues like multitask, but we have root and the unlocked bootloader.. CM9 and other great roms will follow (I hope)... I think I'll be sticking w/ the One X. But if u really need the SD card slot then I guess your choice is already made.
Read the papers from Walmart at&t requires a 30 day window Verizon, and others are 15 from Walmart.

keep1n tha one x
I'm keeping mine but I'm known to play craigs list like a day trader. I'm willing to bet there will be people who want to trade their SGS III for the HOX. I'll consider doing this if development on the HOX stagnates. I don't think it will though after all we don't have Source Code yet.
This phone os perfect for me. It fits my hand, it's light but not too light and the battery life is amazing.
Just returned it....now it's just a waiting game. Kinda miss the phone already especially going back to the iphone 4's tiny little screen .The specs on the new iphone should be coming out soon too.
I'm returning mines, the GS3 was just announced. Pre orders start June 6. The one x is a great phone but I prefer the GS3. Bigger screen, removable battery plus a sd card slot.

The Pentile display killed the SGS3 for me. Don't say "you can't see it" because once you see it, you can't unsee it. It's especially noticeable if you're like me and have been using iPhone 4 and now One X for 2+ years.

agreed on the display. with some of the wifi problems i've been having the last couple of weeks, frankly, i want to return it, but i just can't stand the idea of getting an SGS3 with that damn pentile screen and the overall pukey, pseudo-nature 'inspired' (read: playing the marketable environmental/sustainable/green card) theme. i've go ttill tomorrow to convince myself that the risk of my wifi never working properly isn't enough to make me return this thing...
Return the phone, then drive to different ATT store and get a new one for 30 more days
