If I boot into my recovery(teamwin), and do a nandroid backup, what exactly is backed up, what is not? I am on MIUI-1120901 and would like to try a new ICS rom, maybe something with beats audio since I'm a huge music guy. If I nandroid back up with MIUI rom, then wipe, and flash a different rom, can I restore that MIUI backup, or not? I don't want to lose my messages, contacts, Gmail sync, apps, settings...what is the best way to switch roms and retain all data/apps?

When you back up it keeps your apps, settings, data, contacts, messages. everything that you have at the time you backup. But only up to that point. What I mean by that is it does not keep apps and messages you may accumulate in your next Rom
Once you get into flashing different things you should backup every week or so especially if you want to be up to date if you ever need to restore. Just my thinking
You do not keep your radio and hboot version however keep that in mind.

restoring isnt a form of flashing. so yes you can restore over anything, no need for a superwipe or anything like that if thats what you were thinking.
hboot and radio have nothing to do with the rom software, so for instance if you flashed a rom that recommended a different radio and you went ahead and flashed it to do what the rom suggest.
then you went ahead and restored your backup, you wouldnt have the radio you had when you backed up. does that make sense?
the radio is what is used to grab your signal from your carrier and some builds of roms suggest or even semi require different radios in order to function in a stable manner.
for instance arhd 4.1.9 (2.3.5 gingerbread) reccomend radio 10.15 while 5.0.2 (4.0.1 ice cream sandwhich) now reccomends radio 11.16, if i wanted to restore my 4.1.9 it would be recommended to flash 10.15 radio with it.
but if your just doing some a back up of you miui so you dont lose it if something goes wrong on your new rom. you shouldnt have an issue just backing it up flashing new rom and restoring if need be.
think of a backup as a check point for yourself so if anything goes wrong in the futrue you can start at that check point rather starting from the beginning and finding all your settings and apps ect...

He means it only backs up the ROM itself and the radio and hboot are always outside the backup or rom. The radio and hboot are static until you fastboot and flash a new one.
Also keep in mind to check the ril and test out different ril/radio combos that fit your area.

They are UNchecked(recovery, cache, android secure) but I just read I don't need to check those. I understand the radio/hboot now. What I don't understand - if I nandroid b/u right now, while on MIUI, then wipe, and flash a new ROM, lets say Revolution, and then restore that backup, does it put me back on MIUI, OR leave me on Rev, with all my data(texts, contacts, settings, etc.) and apps I had on MIUI?

Ok here
You back up on miui it creates a folder with you miui Rom and set up. Then you flash revolution. If restore it puts the miui back on and won't effect anything.but if you do not backup rev before restoring you will not have your rev Rom saved and will.need to superwipe and reflash rev
Restoreing will erase anything you have and replace what you had when you backed up

Edit: you can use sms back up and titanium back up (free from the market) as well to keep your apps and messages as you flash over
Google account will sync your contacts and email so no need to worry about that. Sorry I didn't comment on that question at first.

Hi everyone,
I have been using Nandroid and TiBackup for a while, but this thread was the closest I could find to my question, so here goes. I figure the answer will be yes (as it's a NAND backup), but I want to confirm since I have a build/configuration that I like and want to come back to exactly as is.
Does Nandroid restore everything, such as my icon placement on the homescreen, application data, everything?

Yes all of the above. It will restore to the last backup. But it does not replace/restore the Hboot and radio.

You'll get varying opinions as to what ROM but I prefer CM7. To save your apps, install Titanium Backup(TB) and backup all of them, put your ROM of choice on the sd card, nandroid backup everything for any oops that may occur then wipe/factory reset and flash your rom. Once your booted, reinstall TB and use it to recover your apps from the backup created on the sd card.
I did this coming from my Aria to the Inspire and only a few didn't make the trip.

EDIT: be sure to sync all your contacts to Google before flashing so you can get them back should you choose CM7. It doesn't read ATT sims.
Some do some don't, depends what the devs decides/ puts in the updater script. I think its better to wipe everything anyway especially if your new to avoid any possible problems. You can always back up with titanium backup, then restore your apps when you install the new Rom, just only back up apps and their data, avoid anything with /system.

if you like the HTC sense feel. Flash Android revolution 3.2 or RC Mix hd. Both are great and stable.

if you still don't have sound, try flashing the telus kernel on top of the rom. i had no luck with the reaperex stock kernel
all i did was flash the android rev again...and it worked.

Hey guys, I just flashed my first rom and I wanted to let everyone know especially the dev but since I can't post yet in the dev section I made a thread so hopefully he will be able to read it

I just flashed mine for the first time a couple days ago as well. And i know just enough to be dangerous. I'm still not sure about the backup process and what each one does.
What does Nandroid Backup do? When should it be done? And when can it be skipped?

For instance, there's a minor update to the ARHD 3.6.9 -> 3.6.10. When i flash this, i assume i should make a Nandroid backup. What about Titanium? What will happen to all my installed apps? Will they be wiped out?
If i install a different ROM all together and don't like it, can i just pull out the Nandroid backup and go back to where i was with the old ROM and all apps still installed?

Well I wish I could help you but I am not sure if I have all the right answers to your questions, like I said I just flashed my first rom last night and i have not restored anything yet.
Now I understand that a nandroid backup should be done before you flash a new rom if you want to restore that same rom at a later time, for example I did a nadroid backup of my stock rom but if I flash another rom I wont do a nandroid of this miui rom.
I did a titanium back of a few saved games but I have not restored anything yet.
Regarding ARHD rom I can't really tell you anything, maybe someone will help you faster if you post in their rom thread.
SuperWipe from what I have read wipes all your data, cache, dalvik with just one click instead of going one by one but in the end it will make the same effect if you wipe data, cache, dalvik one by one.
Lets wait if someone chimes in and correct me so we both can learn more
A nandroid backup is a bit for bit copy of your current Android set up. It'll back up your rom, applications, application data like text messages, playlists, bookmarks. Everything. If you ever want to go back to it, just restore the backup and you'll be up and running in 3 to 5 minutes.
Titanium backup lets you back up individual applications to be restored at a later time. For example, if I download Opera Mobile and set up all my speed dial bookmarks, I'll perform a titanium back up of the application so that if I change roms at a later time, I can restore the back up of Opera Mobile and not have to re-set anything up.
Hope this clears the air. Neither of which have to be done, mind you, but they are incredibly convenient.
A nandroid backup should be done always before flashing a new rom. even if your updating a rom you should still do a nandroid backup just in case something goes wrong. Sometimes devs forget something in updates and it could mess up your set up so always backup for safe keeping.

I have recently rooted and s off but may I ask what is a kernel ? I want to install a stock ics Rom (I think its pixel or something like that ) and they talk about kernels a lot . Can I just flash it like normal ?

In the rom's thread should be the install notes on how to flash that to your phone, basically it is wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik and then flash rom.

You may notice diminishing battery life with rom flashes. If this is the case, download Battery Calibration from the market. Charge your phone up to 100% and fire this application up. It'll likely ask for root access upon being started (but it might not). Once you're at 100%, click the giant Battery Calibration button. It may ask for root access a second time, just grant it access and it'll wipe the battery stats file. Then, fully discharge the phone (or atleast within 2 to 5%) and charge it back up to 100%. You should notice an immediate improvement in battery life.
Concrats! Now your grown up! I did my first rom yesterday... Now i feel like a big girl... I was scared ass hell that i would ****ed this up... but it works! So i`m proud!

Hey all,
I was wondering how you guys perform your backups if you want to test a new ROM.
Since I joined this forum I switch ROM's a lot but since I don't really backup I have to spend like 30 mins every time to get things to the way they were.
I know the most important stuff, like my contacts and such are backed up through google and my exchange accounts.
I'm talking about backing up the home screens, app credentials and such.
I've used titanium backup but it only does half what I need.
I also have 4ext recovery touch but haven't tried it for that purpose yet.
What I want to achieve is have my normal Rom completely configured and whenever I want to try another Rom just being able to back up and switch back if I don't like the new one without having to configure anything.
Any advise welcom and cheers in advance.

I personally enjoy using 4ext recovery also for my backups. They are clearly labeled with the date of the backup and rom name. Just choose manage backup, create new , it does the rest. Then you can easily assess them , delete them, ext. 4th ext makes it really easy. I use it EVERY time I install a new Rom. Once I needed my backup for a mistake I'd made and its easily installed, wipe factory reset, wipe cash, dalvik cash, install backup if its needed. I hope this helps you..

I have backed up using 4ext, wiped, New Rom, wiped and reinstalled the backup.
Works like a charm and also really fast.
Exactly what I was looking for.
I just use TB now for backing up my userdata in case I test a new Rom.

At the moment i'm running ARHD 6.6.3 on my Sensation. I'd love to upgrade to the new version of ARHD(6.6.5), but i am kinda scared about the whole backup/loosing all my apps/settings/contacts/texts and so on. Is there anyway i can backup EVERYTHING? Like All user inputted data? Like SMS, Contacts, Apps, Settings, Everything?

Titanium Backup for apps and application data. There are applications on the market for backing up SMS and I thought Sense 3.6 could back them up to the SD card (I know for a fact 4.0 can).
For settings, haven't seen any. However, you should be able to flash 6.6.5 or 6.6.7 on top of 6.6.3, because they're very minor changes.
I use 4 ext recovery for my back up, no it won't save my messages but it saves most else. I got into a pinch the other day and had to use my backup, it was wonderful! Everything was there, well most everything. I really like 4ext because its got a lot of features and its soo easy to use. Easy to back up, easy to access backup. Everything is labeled perfectly! I use 4 ext touch. You can take a look at it in the playstore. It's just another option I thought you might like.

Actually 4EXT's backup and restore options are a bit for bit backup of the rom, it should be bakcing up messages and everything else.
Anytime I'm flashing a different ROM I use a 4ext backup. It essentially restores your system as it was exactly at the moment of the backup. So if you have had newer messages since then it will not save those but anything that was on the phone when you backed it up should be there.
I am always a little nervous to flash a new ROM (especially when I have my phone running great) but a 4ext backup really makes it pretty risk free. If you don't like the new ROM just restore the old one and its back to normal.

You are doing the upgrade of same rom... So you don't need to wipe at all.. Just flash the rom in recovery... You can won't lose a spec of data
Remember full wipe is required only when changing to different rom.
Not when upgrading the same rom (unless it's mentioned)

I recently installed a custom ROM (CM9) on my htc sensation and I backed up most things. Thing is when I backed up my SMS I did it through the stock HTC sms app and Im trying to restore it but no apps read the file
Any ideas on what to do?

try this. if it doesnt work make a new backup, then reflash your old backup from your other rom. then use the app. then flash forward to your new one and then restore

Assuming you still have a backup of your original ROM that your messages are stored in, give this a try.

It should let you extract the SMS files from your backupROM.zip file and let you restore them to your current app. If all else fails you can manually go into the backupROM.zip file and pull the SMS database file out yourself. You can copy the .zip to your computer and just root through the .zip and pull out the part you want, copy it to your phone and BOOYA!
Try the free app first though.

OK if you still have your rom that has the the sms then you can flash it back again. Using the correct firmware of course. Then back up the SMS with the app in my post above. Then reflash your current rom again (the one that needs the SMS) then run the app again and choose restore
or, use the method above

ok i think ive messed up. basically i tried flashing the stock kernel so i can go back to the original rom. but when i reboot it just sticks on the htc boot screen (not the one where it says quietly brilliant, just htc) i tried flashing the other kernel back but still nothing. im actually stressing out here cant believe ive messed this up.
ok ive managed to get it back to the old ROM and im backing up my sms right now. damn that scared the crap outta me. but this whole flashing roms and such has been fun and ive learnt a lot. thank you all of the help

I know you've got your old ROM running fine now, but for future reference don't bother flashing the kernel for a backup. When you make a nandoid backup the kernel is included with it, so when you restore it the kernel is restored automatically.
Now in case you meant that you flashed firmware so you could go back to your old rom, then yeah...you may have to do that if you're switching between Gingerbread and ICS roms. But if you're switching between two ICS roms then odds are that your firmware is already 3.32 or 3.33 for both and you don't have to switch it.
