This is a very much work in progress. And is on hold until a breakthrough happens or DerArtem responds to my PM with some info.
First off, credits:
ejhart - All of the development is basically from him. He compiled the sierra.ko for Android which was the big step. Took me through all the steps and has been the main force behind this.
Pershoot - Thank you so much for your kernel and your hard work. Your inclusion of pppd and usbserial helped so much.
Sierra Wireless - Your USB dongle started this? No, but seriously, the Linux support of their modems helped get the device accessible from terminal and may get it to work fully eventually.
DerArtem - Your Folio work on this same thing helped. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=914350 (UMTS/3G Support on Toshiba Folio)
(Random thanks)
Cyanogen - For CM and all he's done for ROMs in general.
Speed Software - Root Explorer is the most useful app.
Jack Palevich - Terminal Emulator makes this work.
PinkVenture - GScript Lite makes my boot easier.
Current Status
Dongle can be accessed from Android.
pppd functions do not throw errors.
lsmod reveals Sierra device as live.
dmesg shows it loading from ttyUSB0, ttyUSB1, ttyUSB2, and ttyUSB3.
All work is using CM7.
How to get your tablet here
1. Download and install Pershoot's kernel from here.
2. Download the attached files: sierra.ko.zip and ppp.zip
3. Extract sierra.ko and the ppp folder and then copy them to sdcard or internal storage.
4. Download Root Explorer (paid app), Terminal Emulator (free), and GScript Lite (free).
5. Use Root Explorer to copy sierra.ko to /system/lib/modules/ (needs to be mounted R/W). Then copy all the files within ppp (ip-up.local, ip-down.local, and peers folder) to /etc/ppp/
6. Open Terminal Emulator, execute "su" (allow it to use Super User), execute "insmod /system/lib/modules/sierra.ko" (no quotes on any command)
7. If no error is thrown you are where you should be. In Teminal Emulator, execute "lsmod" (no quotes). It should display something like "sierra 11378 0 - Live 0xbf000000"
8. This step is optional: Open GScript Lite, press Menu, Add Script, in the Name field put whatever you want, in the Script field type the same command as above, "insmod /system/lib/modules/sierra.ko" (no quotes)
9. In Terminal Emulator, (as su) execute "pppd call cdma". If no errors, it should be at the same point I am. Congratulations!
Current Issues
1. Modem doesn't act as data connection.
2. No software support for modem.
3. Needs device specific ril library to work (may be possible to build, has been done for Huawei modems).
4. No idea if this works for non-Sierra modems, obviously has to be adapted for other manufacturers. If you build the .ko for other devices, feel free to post it and I will add it to this post, it will help other people.
5. Probably tons of other issues that are lower level stuff.
Feel free to ask questions or give suggestions, we are in need of all the help with the Android part of this as we can get! You can also join us on #tegratab, I am Winnah9000 and ejhart is on there as well.
Updates:
Tried to use the parts from the Folio Update.zip, but they didn't fix anything.
You guys never cease to amaze me. Excellent work and great news for us to wake up to. As far as working, do I need to purchase an air card from Verizon(my phone carrier) or can I get one of the pay-as-you-go 3G air cards from Walmart to work with this? Also, I see you're using CM7, but what other roms does this work on? I'm using the GAdam alpha5 rom, do I need to switch back to TNT OEM rom to test this out? Thanks again for your feedback and your work.

Glad someone else was excited about this
I wouldn't purchase the air card as of yet since we aren't fully sure this will ever work. However, you do present an interesting idea. If we could use the pay-as-you-go cards and find a way around the data throttling like they did on the G2 this would be an extremely cheap way for a 3G Tegra 2 tablet.
To your ROM question. I'm using CM7 because the other ROMs (TnT Lite, VEGAn-Tab, etc.) lack the necessary telephony and communication apks that we would need for calling the data. Also, not sure which ROMs the pershoot kernel doesn't work on (I think it works on TnT Lite, CM7, and VEGAn when compiled correctly). You are welcome to test it on those when we get further along

If you have a Sierra Wireless modem you are welcome to try your own ideas. If its something else, then wait until ejhart explains to me how to compile a .ko against Android for whichever dongle it is.
Thanks for your support!
Is this a particularmodel and chipset? I'm not familiar with Sierra Wireless. Can you post the source code for the driver?

Yeah, its the AirCard 250U sold by Sprint. Its 3G/4G, but the driver Sierra developed only does 3G cause they're lazy asses.
Here's the driver source and pppd dialing scripts: http://sierrawireless.custhelp.com/...-on-a-linux-operating-system-(-ac-850/860,-ac
Also, all development on this has stopped until further notice. We are hoping DerArtem releases the ril source and that the ril library will help it to work. Thanks for all your support!
Hi
as the Advent Vega has similar hardware (same oem part number i think?) then this might be of some help. Look at post 12 onwards. I have succesfully got this working with a Huawei E169 usb dongle.
http://android.modaco.com/content/advent-vega-vega-modaco-com/329229/mobile-broadband-dongles/
You have this working on the Viewsonic G tablet? Because I have tried to load the rom through Clockwork and the screen goes black. I need to know the secret.
OK, I discovered the ROM is loaded through ADB after extracting the files. Get a permission issue towards the end of the installation. Did you have that same issue? If so how did you overcome it?

Owners Advent Vega can already use a 3G-dongls. Why we can't do it? We have a firmware which is based on the firmware for Advent Vega. Why till now isn't present?
Good luck!

I can't speak for all the devs / modders, but for me it's very simple. I don't have a 3G modem to even test with. My suggestion, in all seriousness, is to contact Viewsonic and ask them to add support into their firmware. And maybe ask for USB mouse support as well if you call them, I've already put in a ticket for that myself. The more people who call, the more likely that they might add it.
I have a aircard that the day job supplies, but the darn thing won't even work in MacOS or Linux, let along Android. I'm actually considering a MiFi device as it seems to be a fairly easy way to get around these issues.

I've reviewed this with ejhart but we didn't see much that they did which we didn't. The main issue is that most of the people who have it working are using Huawei brand 3G dongles which aren't used by carriers here, so they have different software pieces to make it work.

I'm not sure what you're asking... If its about CM7, don't use bittrix's build. Use GoJimi's build (Beta 2 I think).

Roebeet has been in the IRC while we worked on it but he didn't have anything to contribute. The main issue is that none of them have a 3G dongle to work on it with, which also means its not a big deal for them to get it working (don't get me wrong, they still would like it to work, but they have more important things to work on).
Here are the sources for ril:

Thank you for this
However, we still have an issue. The RIL is pretty much coded for GSM only, there are some CDMA bits, but they look incomplete. I personally don't know enough programming to get it to work and ejhart already has other projects, so if someone wants to take it on, go for it!
That being said, this should probably work for GSM companies like T-Mobile, AT&T, etc. Feel free to try it if you know what you're doing
O please work.
I have been trying to get a 3G usb working since i got this thing. Im not computer programing savy enough to figure any of this out. I mean i know what your talking about, i understand it all, just cant program, so I hope you guys can work this out, would be in debt to you guys forever.
I will be calling viewsonic everyday as a differnet person say I want 3G mondem support and hopefully they will just build it in for us all.
Thanks again for all your work guys.

It almost seems to me that is why they gave it a standard USB port, as well as a mini port. It could be for stick drives, but then why was there a spot for a micro SD? Perhaps, the TNT people at VS were in such a rush to get the product to market, that they simply skipped this feature?

Because Micro SD cards are limited to 32GB, while USB thumb drives are at 256GB or you can use an external hard drive with power for 2 or 3 TB. They didn't put in the 3G support because they could've just sold the zPad (or w/e its called) with a 3G module slot. They sold this because its cheap and they didn't have to write extra drivers for 3G modem support.
EDIT: Also, the reference board for Tegra 2 has the USB port, so they probably threw it in for kicks.
this a workable solution:

Never seen it, but for $15, I don't expect much. If you are hoping for support on the G Tab, you should pick up a Huawei modem.
Hey guys
First let me say that I did try to look around the forums, but did not find anything relevant .. the search tool really isn't that great.
My parents, in all their wisdom, decided to go ahead and buy two "generic" android tablets whilst I was away at uni without asking for my advice.
Now had I known, I would have told them to stay the hell away from them, unfortunately I am now left with two annoying adults wanting me to make their tablets faster and better.
I am a pretty good programmer and am doing computer science at Uni, so I though i might try to root/flash a custom ROM onto those tablets myself (i know nobody else will ever do it). However I have never touched anything 'android dev' related (apart from obviously rooting and flashing my own HTC Desire) so I really have no idea about where to start.
This is where you lovely people come in: I would be oh so grateful if someone could put me in the right direction as to whatI should be looking into in order to root, and eventually flash a rom onto a new device that no other dev has ever touched before. I'm guessing that if people are doing it for mainstream devices, its entirely possible to do on the tablets I have, I just need to know where to start looking.
Thanks a bunch in advance guys, please don't be to harsh on me <3
I do not know if this will help you or not, but I also am trying to flash a ROM for a "generic" android device. Given that mine is a phone and not a tablet, I do not know if this would work for you or not therefore I'd recommend doing prior research; however, I was able to root my device using the z4root app.
As far as I know, the next step would be installing a recovery (such as clockwork recovery in ROM Manager) in case something goes wrong. I'm not certain about how one would go about porting that software, but their are instructions posted on the developer's website. I don't know enough about the process so I can't really give anymore input; however, if you find any other information, be sure to let me know as well
definitely will thanks!
I've got one problem with one of the tablets already .. it never came with a usb cable, and does not have a micro usb, min usb or anything that I may know as a port, it only has some kind of proprietary port that strangely looks like an iPod/iPhone/iPad port but I can't be sure as I do not own an ipodcable to try it out .. is it in any way possible that a generic tablet could have an apple connector on it?

I can just tell you from my experience using a Ciphone Pro (IP4 knock-off running android). It came with a cable that looks very similar to an iphone cable (my girlfriend and I cannot tell the difference between them). I can plug my phone into either my cable or her Iphone 3GS cable to charge; however, when she once plugged her phone into my cable, her Iphone said the charge was not compatible. Because the android phone didn't display any prompts when connected to the iphone adapter, I assume that these generic devices are compatible with it. I hope this helps, but you could also check all of the iphone cables you have lying around because maybe one of them actually came with the device

One thing that I've noticed is that there are quite a few "generics" out there that are actually rebadged versions of each other. If your tablets are one, then if you can find the line of tablets that they belong to, then you might be able to find a development community behind that line of tablets. If that's the case, then there might already be recoveries/roms available for you to flash onto these tablets. I'm not sure of a great resource but androidforums.net might help.

I would like to marry you Sir. Thanks to your advice I looked around, using the generic pads specifications, and ended up finding out that they were just "rebranded" flytouch epad. Might I ask how you came to this conclusion? I'm trying to see if I can install custom ROMs on my phone and I believe that it is more than likely that there is a compatible version floating around somewhere. I'm not exactly sure what I should be searching for, so if you have any pointers it would be greatly appreciated

All I did was look at the specs of my device (ram, processor, screen size and internal memory being the big ones) and just tried to look for any other device with the same specs. It took a lot of googleing though, so be ready to search through useless search results for a while.

Awesome! I'm glad you were able to find what you were looking for. I must, however, decline the offer as I am already married and polygamy is illegal here.
Hi Folks,
I just bought an Acer A500 and I'm really disappointed in it. The screen isn't very good, and wifi seems a bit wonky on it. Not that I'm against hacking, because I'm not at all. I don't like the fact that it doesn't work with ad-hoc wifi connections out of the box. The thing I loved about it was that I had it rooted, recovery and a custom ICS rom installed within an hour.
I know the TF101 has a better screen so I'm not going to ask that. I've tried to search for most of this info, but you know how good search is, so I'll ask here.
I see the tab has root, is there a one click method that I missed? I thought I saw one for it at one point but haven't seen it since.
As far as wifi goes, will this thing hook up to our android phones using the tether apps (not pdanet)?
How easy is it to brick one of these? Stupid question I know, but I've been using Samsung phones which are pretty much impossible to brick unless you really screw up on a kernel, so I would just like to hear what you think.
Reason I ask is because I debated between this and the A500. I went with the A500 based on price. I've been theming over on the the Nexus S for AOKP and CM9 so I'm looking for a tab that I will be able to work with the same roms so I can expand into tablets. I've also started trying to do some source builds so I can make some of my own visual modifications to some of the jar files within the framework.
Thanks in advanced for any input you can give!
1. Easy to root, especially the earlier models.
2. Wifi tether & Bluetooth tether (I recommend bluetooth highly!)
3. Almost impossible to brick if you have one of the earlier Transformers with NVflash.

On a new model, all you get is CWM. So make a back up and hold it dear. Because if something gets hosed while flashing and you don't have anything to go back to. Its dead.
On an older model they have nvflash and can recover from anything.
So what I'm hearing is buy a refurb and hope?

Mine is a new model. SBK2. I have flashed it 30 times and never had an issue. Granted I have my original backup and origianl kernel on a 2 gig card I had lie'n around and then I placed that in my safe.
As long as you know what you are doing yer all good. Maybe. Lol
try to find a used one preferably SBK1 which is B-70(some) and below they are much easier to work with when it comes to modding and hacking (NV flash) which is like ODIN for Samsung phones. They are great tablets dont get me wrong but the new wave of devices are unfortunetly going to make these tabs obsolete much better than the Acer devices you spoke of
I'm getting a bursary payment from my university on Thursday and I was planning on using the money to buy the parts for a new computer then, but I've now decided to wait till next month and put some of the money from said payment towards buying an Infinity instead as a early birthday present for myself as well as using it as a device for reading relevant materials for my Computer Studies degree (That, plus it looks like it'll make a great device for viewing HD anime fansubs as well! ^_^)
In the meantime, do any of the members here in this forum who own the device have any advice for a new owner, such as what's the best custom ROM, the best accessories, how to make it the best it can be, etc?
First of all: 'This is an awesome tablet.
But you will soon discover that the stock ROM has sad and perplexing limitations.
If you plan to unlock and flash a custom Rom anyway, my vote goes for CROMI!
It's based on the stock ROM, but much, much better!
On stock this tab crawls, on CROMI it flies, it's stable and incredibly well supported.
Just follow the CROMI threads in the Development, General and Help sections for a while and you'll see what I mean....

I'll be sure to check CROMI out if it's that good. How does it compare to other ROMS such as Cyanogenmod?
I second the suggestion of CROMI. I just unlocked my tablet over the weekend and there is a MASSIVE difference in how fast apps load and especially PDFs (from a Class 10 MicroSD, of course) and browser performance. I still have to explore Data2SD, but I've heard good things about that too.

I would check out the relevant threads on this forum. In the end it is a matter of taste and preference.
I have not tried Cyanogenmod and I don't see any reason to do so. My tab runs perfectly on CROMI.
I cannot imagine it running better on another ROM.
CROMl is based on the Asus stock ROM, CWM is build from the ground up. From what I hear and read, this fact seems to make CWM prone to more bugs and hardware Conflicts. But that's just my opinion...

I can confirm you really need to root it, otherwise buy another tablet!
Once you are rooted, it's a great device.
I used Cromi for a week and it's good and fast, no doubt about it.
For me personally performance is not only about speed, but also about customize options and for that reason I flashed Baked BlackBean 8 and I will not flash anything else for a while. It's without a doubt the best ROM if you like AOKP roms. If your not familiar with I suggest to start with Cromi! Like said above, support is amazing, to be fair it's the only thread 'alive' in de TF700 forum compared to One X forum.
Btw: I didn't try CM10, but support there is also great from Dasunsrule

My suggestion would be to use it and use it well for the first month or two to make sure the hardware is functioning properly before going the custom ROM route. The reason for this is you will have to unlock it to flash a custom recovery and ROM, and this will void your warranty.
If something goes wrong after you have unlocked you are SOL for warranty coverage.

1. Try and get NvFlash working. A safety is ALWAYS a good thing (you especially value that when you have a military background. ).
2. Unlock, and flash a custom ROM -- stock ROM sucks Major Balls' ass..
My preference is CROMI -- it's stock-based so you have the quick access features, full IPS+ support, full dock support, etc. that some other custom ROMs may struggle with (and even if stable now, they may get to struggle with them as new Android versions arrive on the stage). It does come down to preference, as the rest said, too. You cannot go really, absolutely wrong.
3. I had a rather thick leather case -- it might have been rendering too much pressure on the connections between the tablet and the dock (I still have to find out what caused the breakdown of the docking clamps... <ggrrrr>). I'd suggest either going 'naked' for a while (be careful not to let it tip backwards!) or get a really thin "foil case" (some are referenced in the Accessories forum).
4. Give data2sd some consideration -- that means getting yourself a nice, big, blazingly fast microSD card -- again: off to the Accessories forum you go.
5. With a little time, you'll be tinkering along with us, and get to arrive to the main point: enjoyment.
I just want to thank everybody who's posted here and offered some really great advice so far.
I'll definitely be installing CROMI and taking my time with the device when I finally get hold of it on Thursday.
Don't get me wrong, I love my Galaxy Tab 10.1 but I decided to get an upgrade as it was running out of space plus I was getting frustrated with the lack of a MicroSD card slot so I could transfer apps to a card as well as put media files on it.

Marty had some great advice actually. When you get your tablet, first thing: check your firmware version. If you're lucky it comes with ICS, firmware version ending in .26.
If that is the case: Do not update right away! Search XDA for how to make a NVflash backup.
If you have that, your tab is unbrickable = peace of mind.
I didn't know that and upgraded to JB right away (groan).
But I believe .26 is the last firmware version where you can use the NVflash tool. ICS .30 is already too late...

I'm actually blushing.
The NvFlash procedure was a definite PITA -- it took me an entire evening and a few hours from the night to quit in frustration, only to try a different USB port the next morning and getting it to work right away. As you said, you'll really have to do your best and be extremely unlucky in order to brick it once you have your backups safely tucked away.
I really do find it extremely annoying that ASUS had decided to block NvFlash on the newer firmwares/bootloaders -- I fail to see any advantage in doing so. Now, they'll have more people sending in bricks that could've been easily recovered in the safety and comfort of the owner's own home, and their rather dense (in the sense of stupid) repair center/customer service is overwhelmed already. (People have been mentioning receiving their 700s from the repair center after having run through the RMA procedure twice -- :S -- without the issue actually having been solved [private communication].
Useless gits.
UPDATE: I managed to place a order with Amazon UK yesterday for a 64GB MicroSD card (Class 10 of course) as well as a Caseen Perfecto case for the Infinity itself as well as a computer case for the HTPC that I'll be building next month.
As for the Infinity itself, I was planning on buying it through Currys today via their Pickup and Collect option, but for some reason the option wasn't available at all and not only that, they didn't even offer a next-day delivery option to where I live in the UK, so I decided to order a used version from Amazon UK instead for £504.99 (which I'll be thoroughly testing and checking out before rooting it later on). In fact, I think Currys ended up doing me a favor as I've now saved £95.00 on the retail price for the 64GB version instead of the £50.01 that I would have saved if I had managed to buy it brand new from Currys today!
It's a bit of a shame that I'll have to wait till tomorrow to have it delivered (for free, thanks to Amazon Prime), but I know it'll be worth the wait at the end of the day.

Good to hear you decided to take the plunge and join our merry bunch. I do hope that delivery is swift and all arrives well, and that you get a perfect Infinity!
By the way, in addition to my earlier reply: I have been testing data2sd lately, and it does make a significant difference, especially with (un)installation of appd and web browsing. Something to keep in mind; you may regard this as an additional recommendation, hahaha!

If you do decide to root it in the end, ensure that you install "Browser2Ram", this significantly increased the performance of the stock browser.
Before rooting the native browser would crash with just about every webpage that was a bit overpopulated with script.
Bought myself an infinity tf700t - also my first post
Hi to all
thought it was time I scrapped my chinese Tablet and bought something more powerful, bit of an impulse buy but it did not cost me too much as purchased from E***, 1 dead pixel but actually has 3, I am not too bothered at the moment, it did occur to me that I could probably get this repaired under warranty, cant be more than a year old, would Asus honor this, would I have to provide receipts, anyone know where I stand in regards to this, I really do like the tablet, it is responsive and screen looks good, internet is really quick, be good to know what other things this bad boy can do, what I would like to ask is what apps would you all recommend and if anyone has found a decent case and cover for both components. I have been reading all the posts on custom roms, that might be a little bit beyond me as I have no experience of this. also read that it is only possible if tablet is running ICS, my is on JB 4.1.1
there was another question I wanted to ask, does this device allow for tethering to my iphone so I can use the 3g capabilities, and how is this done if possible, please make it simple as I am a bit of a Noob. as you have gathered I do need some help unleashing the power of my new toys, interested to hear anything or any suggestions, best apps, I would be extremely grateful and many thanks in advance. have a good day guys.
Kind Regards
Paul:
I finally got hold of the device a few hours ago and it definitely is a really nice device... Unfortunately, it seems that the one I got from Amazon UK has the Jellybean firmware so it looks like I'll have to downgrade then upgrade before rooting and adding a custom rom to it.
Can anybody point me in the right direction on how to downgrade then upgrade? The build number according to the device is "JR003C WW_epad 10.4.4.18-20121012".

I tether mine regularly to my Motorola RAZR (Android based). I don't know how the iPhone identifies the wireless network it makes available when tethering. Once you find that out, you just connect the tablet to it, entering a password if you set it up that way. From then on, that connection should be remembered for easy connection.

If you want to unlock anyway, you don't need to downgrade.

If you want to unlock, you don't need to downgrade, and you don't need to root - just unlock and install a custom pre-rooted ROM.
If you want to root without unlocking, you need to downgrade to 9.4.4.30, root, and use OTA Rootkeeper and incremental dlkpgfile updates to get back to JB.
Hello all. I searched the forums and did not see any thing on this, so I thought I would ask. I have decided that I am going to breathe some new life into my old Sensation. I want to use it as a dash cam, since it can take sd cards. I would like to hopefully be able to turn off certain functions of the phone, like cell radios and such, for battery life purposes. I haven't flashed this phone with a custom ROM in over 3 years, since the camera broke both times I rooted it and had to send it in for warranty service. I would assume an older versions of CM (CM9 or CM10) would be best with the limited RAM. And a recommended dashcam app would be a big help.
On a side note on this, I can't get the HTC bootloader unlock tool to work. I assume it is because I am running Win10. The attachment is what I have on fast boot.
Thank you in advance for any and all help.
That is not a bad idea, I am wondering if you had any personal follow through.
