I'm getting a bursary payment from my university on Thursday and I was planning on using the money to buy the parts for a new computer then, but I've now decided to wait till next month and put some of the money from said payment towards buying an Infinity instead as a early birthday present for myself as well as using it as a device for reading relevant materials for my Computer Studies degree (That, plus it looks like it'll make a great device for viewing HD anime fansubs as well! ^_^)
In the meantime, do any of the members here in this forum who own the device have any advice for a new owner, such as what's the best custom ROM, the best accessories, how to make it the best it can be, etc?

But you will soon discover that the stock ROM has sad and perplexing limitations.
If you plan to unlock and flash a custom Rom anyway, my vote goes for CROMI!
It's based on the stock ROM, but much, much better!
On stock this tab crawls, on CROMI it flies, it's stable and incredibly well supported.
Just follow the CROMI threads in the Development, General and Help sections for a while and you'll see what I mean....

I second the suggestion of CROMI. I just unlocked my tablet over the weekend and there is a MASSIVE difference in how fast apps load and especially PDFs (from a Class 10 MicroSD, of course) and browser performance. I still have to explore Data2SD, but I've heard good things about that too.

I would check out the relevant threads on this forum. In the end it is a matter of taste and preference.
I have not tried Cyanogenmod and I don't see any reason to do so. My tab runs perfectly on CROMI.
I cannot imagine it running better on another ROM.
CROMl is based on the Asus stock ROM, CWM is build from the ground up. From what I hear and read, this fact seems to make CWM prone to more bugs and hardware Conflicts. But that's just my opinion...

I can confirm you really need to root it, otherwise buy another tablet!
Once you are rooted, it's a great device.
I used Cromi for a week and it's good and fast, no doubt about it.
For me personally performance is not only about speed, but also about customize options and for that reason I flashed Baked BlackBean 8 and I will not flash anything else for a while. It's without a doubt the best ROM if you like AOKP roms. If your not familiar with I suggest to start with Cromi! Like said above, support is amazing, to be fair it's the only thread 'alive' in de TF700 forum compared to One X forum.
Btw: I didn't try CM10, but support there is also great from Dasunsrule

My suggestion would be to use it and use it well for the first month or two to make sure the hardware is functioning properly before going the custom ROM route. The reason for this is you will have to unlock it to flash a custom recovery and ROM, and this will void your warranty.
If something goes wrong after you have unlocked you are SOL for warranty coverage.

1. Try and get NvFlash working. A safety is ALWAYS a good thing (you especially value that when you have a military background. ).
2. Unlock, and flash a custom ROM -- stock ROM sucks Major Balls' ass..
My preference is CROMI -- it's stock-based so you have the quick access features, full IPS+ support, full dock support, etc. that some other custom ROMs may struggle with (and even if stable now, they may get to struggle with them as new Android versions arrive on the stage). It does come down to preference, as the rest said, too. You cannot go really, absolutely wrong.
3. I had a rather thick leather case -- it might have been rendering too much pressure on the connections between the tablet and the dock (I still have to find out what caused the breakdown of the docking clamps... <ggrrrr>). I'd suggest either going 'naked' for a while (be careful not to let it tip backwards!) or get a really thin "foil case" (some are referenced in the Accessories forum).
4. Give data2sd some consideration -- that means getting yourself a nice, big, blazingly fast microSD card -- again: off to the Accessories forum you go.
5. With a little time, you'll be tinkering along with us, and get to arrive to the main point: enjoyment.

I'll definitely be installing CROMI and taking my time with the device when I finally get hold of it on Thursday.
Don't get me wrong, I love my Galaxy Tab 10.1 but I decided to get an upgrade as it was running out of space plus I was getting frustrated with the lack of a MicroSD card slot so I could transfer apps to a card as well as put media files on it.

Marty had some great advice actually. When you get your tablet, first thing: check your firmware version. If you're lucky it comes with ICS, firmware version ending in .26.
If that is the case: Do not update right away! Search XDA for how to make a NVflash backup.
If you have that, your tab is unbrickable = peace of mind.
I didn't know that and upgraded to JB right away (groan).
But I believe .26 is the last firmware version where you can use the NVflash tool. ICS .30 is already too late...

I'm actually blushing.
The NvFlash procedure was a definite PITA -- it took me an entire evening and a few hours from the night to quit in frustration, only to try a different USB port the next morning and getting it to work right away. As you said, you'll really have to do your best and be extremely unlucky in order to brick it once you have your backups safely tucked away.
I really do find it extremely annoying that ASUS had decided to block NvFlash on the newer firmwares/bootloaders -- I fail to see any advantage in doing so. Now, they'll have more people sending in bricks that could've been easily recovered in the safety and comfort of the owner's own home, and their rather dense (in the sense of stupid) repair center/customer service is overwhelmed already. (People have been mentioning receiving their 700s from the repair center after having run through the RMA procedure twice -- :S -- without the issue actually having been solved [private communication].
Useless gits.
UPDATE: I managed to place a order with Amazon UK yesterday for a 64GB MicroSD card (Class 10 of course) as well as a Caseen Perfecto case for the Infinity itself as well as a computer case for the HTPC that I'll be building next month.
As for the Infinity itself, I was planning on buying it through Currys today via their Pickup and Collect option, but for some reason the option wasn't available at all and not only that, they didn't even offer a next-day delivery option to where I live in the UK, so I decided to order a used version from Amazon UK instead for £504.99 (which I'll be thoroughly testing and checking out before rooting it later on). In fact, I think Currys ended up doing me a favor as I've now saved £95.00 on the retail price for the 64GB version instead of the £50.01 that I would have saved if I had managed to buy it brand new from Currys today!
It's a bit of a shame that I'll have to wait till tomorrow to have it delivered (for free, thanks to Amazon Prime), but I know it'll be worth the wait at the end of the day.

If you do decide to root it in the end, ensure that you install "Browser2Ram", this significantly increased the performance of the stock browser.
Before rooting the native browser would crash with just about every webpage that was a bit overpopulated with script.

thought it was time I scrapped my chinese Tablet and bought something more powerful, bit of an impulse buy but it did not cost me too much as purchased from E***, 1 dead pixel but actually has 3, I am not too bothered at the moment, it did occur to me that I could probably get this repaired under warranty, cant be more than a year old, would Asus honor this, would I have to provide receipts, anyone know where I stand in regards to this, I really do like the tablet, it is responsive and screen looks good,internet is really quick, be good to know what other things this bad boy can do, what I would like to ask is what apps would you all recommend and if anyone has found a decent case and cover for both components. I have been reading all the posts on custom roms, that might be a little bit beyond me as I have no experience of this. also read that it is only possible if tablet is running ICS, my is on JB 4.1.1
there was another question I wanted to ask, does this device allow for tethering to my iphone so I can use the 3g capabilities, and how is this done if possible, please make it simple as I am a bit of a Noob. as you have gathered I do need some help unleashing the power of my new toys, interested to hear anything or any suggestions, best apps, I would be extremely grateful and many thanks in advance. have a good day guys.

I finally got hold of the device a few hours ago and it definitely is a really nice device... Unfortunately, it seems that the one I got from Amazon UK has the Jellybean firmware so it looks like I'll have to downgrade then upgrade before rooting and adding a custom rom to it.
Can anybody point me in the right direction on how to downgrade then upgrade? The build number according to the device is "JR003C WW_epad 10.4.4.18-20121012".

I tether mine regularly to my Motorola RAZR (Android based). I don't know how the iPhone identifies the wireless network it makes available when tethering. Once you find that out, you just connect the tablet to it, entering a password if you set it up that way. From then on, that connection should be remembered for easy connection.

If you want to unlock, you don't need to downgrade, and you don't need to root - just unlock and install a custom pre-rooted ROM.
If you want to root without unlocking, you need to downgrade to 9.4.4.30, root, and use OTA Rootkeeper and incremental dlkpgfile updates to get back to JB.

I'm thinking about unlocking my TF700 after all things I heard about CleanRom. However, Asus stupidly decided that it voids all warranty (idiots). So I seek your advice. Is it really worth to unlock the device for that ROM and is it recommended to take extra insurance? If so, does anybody know a good one in The Netherlands?

How long have you had the tablet?
If you have absolutely no manufacturing deficiency and are happy with the tablets looks.
Then unlock it and flash CleanROM.
Don't let Asus hold a gun to your head.
IMO Asus isn't helping the tablet much with OTAs and their RMA process can be a nightmare.
If your still unsure "Squaretrade" is a good way to go, yet in opinion not worth it.

Well there are two complications I've had the tablet for about 3 - 4 weeks and it is the best Asus tablet (in terms of defects) I've owned yet (before had a TF101 that has been 4 times for RMA and have had 7 Primes). There is also the catch. After lots of complaining, I came in contact with the marketing manager of Asus Benelux who agreed on swapping my Prime (after first sending me in some more Primes which all had some kind of problem) for a TF700. So I don't have a receipt, everything should probably be dealt with the manager directly. Furthermore, I don't think SquareTrade is availabe in The Netherlands.
Have you tried CleanROM, is it worth the risk and really makes the tablet fly? I find it very sluggish atm...

Been running CleanROM for about 4 days now.
I have difficulty putting the tablet down, I run the battery down everyday now, My Infinity has become my go to device.
I really-really like the tablet now, prior to CleanROM I was really-really hating it.
The Infinity is no longer a sluggish device!
Definitely worth the risk!
My recommendation hold it tight because you will be using it more and more.

I see you type Benelux, so if you are from the Netherlands there should not be an issue. The Dutch law protects you against such unreasonable warranties. The Dutch law says that a manufacterer has to deliver a proper functioning device.
Hi bought mine at BCC and bought an extra warranty that covers all stupid actions for about € 100,- ex.btw. for 3 years.
When repair is needed no questions asked, broken screen, bricked etc.

Hi all,
after having read a lot on different accessible Android tablets, I have decided to purchase a T700. Seeing the speed on YouTube and reading about this device have convinced me to make that step.
Now, the order is placed, but receipt is still a few days away, I am reading this site and have the feeling that actually the device is not so smooth when kept original. I do wish to have a smooth working device but keep away from as much flashing as possible.
As my signature might indicate, I have some flashing experience, but I still feel myself noob for each and every new device I get.
My Desire HD has always been stock, not even rooted.
My OneX+ is rooted and unlocked after a short while, I use TitaniumBackup and deleted some Bloatware, but have no wish to flash any custom roms.
I just feel that flashing a device new and new to get it perfect is aking too much time. My rooted and unlocked OneX+ is fast enough, no tweaking needed.
This is the state I would like my T700 to be in. Fast and smooth with allowance to have the device do what I want.
Means I do want root, but if not necessary would not like to unlock / flash or anything else.
Can You advice me on the steps I should or should not do to get such state.
-should I make sure not to use any OTA after receipt
-should I root after receipt and upgrade to JB after that (and eventually root once more)
I will be reading around more before I will get my hands on the device, but I would really like to make the correct steps.
I'd be grateful for your opinions.

To be honest, the TF700 does have some performance issues with the stock firmware. I would *highly* recommend that you install a custom ROM - more specifically, I'd recommend the "CleanROM Inheritance" custom ROM specifically for your TF700, which will make it *very* fast and smooth.
Of course, in order to install a custom ROM, such as CleanROM Inheritance, you will need to unlock the bootloader on your device, which *will* void your warranty! If that is a concern (it was for me), I would recommend a third-party warranty service such as SquareTrade. With a coupon, you can get 2 years of coverage (including "accidental coverage") for about $80. This way, if you do brick your device while trying to flash a custom ROM, you will be covered.
Trust me, $80 is a small price to pay for complete peace-of-mind for 2 years, especially considering the performance gain with CleanROM. Hell, even if I run the TF700 over with my car, it will still be covered under warranty...

So even if I would unpack and let all OTA updates run up to JB, give it a complete refresh, I would still be unhappy with the performance, right ?
The insurance is nice, but as I am to use it in Russia, I would not know if I am covered for these things.
It is actually not the fact that I am afraid to loose warranty. All devices I did unlock were done after reading the different threads here and I was always lucky to get the job done without serious issues. My OneX+ is still brandnew and I presume I do not have warranty anymore anyway as I rooted and unlocked it already.
What I was hoping for is to get a smooth device without the need to go through this process, I guess your answer says I am not .

Before doping the OTA updates use NVflash. Eventos though you are no considering flashing ROMs now it will be a good insurance in the case you change tour mind in the future.

To be more exact: version 9.4.5.26 is the last version that can be used to *prepare* NVFlash access. To use NVFlash on the TF700, you need a tool called "wheelie" and a blob file with data extracted from your device (it's encrypted with a device-specific key). Later bootloaders are locked down, even after unlocking the device, so it is no longer possible to obtain this file. So before upgrading anything, be sure to read about the procedure on http://androidroot.mobi/t3_nvflash/ .
There is also a thread in the development section that explains the details.

I'm not sure what version of Android it'll be running when I get it so I'd like to know what are the things I should really be avoiding when using the lock tool, flashing the boot loader and the rom (cromix :good: )?
From the impression I've got, the device seems very fickle/easy to brick/break. Am I wrong in thinking that?
The TF700 users here seem like a helpful bunch so hopefully I could get a few pointers on things NOT to do....

Hi, and welcome to the community!
First things first: check the unit thoroughly for the known issues (screen bleed, loose screen bonding, etc. Several threads in here concerning the most frequent issues.
1) If you happen to get a pre-.30 firmware (which is unlikely at this point in time), install Nvflash first and pull the backups. That might save you form not only severe headaches but a pretty stack of dollars too, if the excrement hits the ventilator.
2) Try and see if the unlock tool works. In a relatively large percentage of 700s, it doesn't. That would solve your problem instantly. (You can then proceed to update to the latest stock ROM, but no custom ROM'in' for you then. That << smiley is actually very mean, because that would be some major suck.)
3) Whatever you do, ONLY use the most recent versions of whatever recovery has your preference. Also update the bootloader to the version your ROM of choice requires!
4) Unless you have extensive experience with flashing and ROMs in general, it might be prudent to pick a stock-based ROM (i.e. CROMI-X). If you comfortable with the odd bug here and there, you might try an AOSP/AOKP/CM-based ROM and see if they fit your bill.
CROMI-X has a great OP with all the updates to bootloader and such you'll need.
5) Don't do anything if you're not sure when starting out. The 700 is not particularly easy to brick, but it is relatively hard to fix in some cases that on other devices (Samsung's comes to mind) would just mean reflashing some stuff (in Odin/Heimdall).

If it doesn't work it just gives some error message. I haven't heard of anyone bricking because the unlock tool failed, so you should be safe there. As far as I'm aware the only issue you'll have from the unlock tool not working is just the fact that you're not going to be unlocked lol.

I'm with Martin on this:
Until you are sure that your tab is not a lemon with major hardware issues I would not unlock it.
You can root it and start playing around with some more advanced settings in the meantime. Wouldn't it really suck if you unlocked and a day or week later the digitizer would go bad? Asus could say: Sorry, pal - you're unlocked, you're out of warranty.
They have repaired even unlocked devices under warranty, but you can't count on it. And in some cases the repaired tablet came back with a permanently locked bootloader....
So give it a few weeks, in the meantime start reading the relevant thread of your favorite custom ROM(s) to get a feel for them, and familiarize yourself with the process and lingo of flashing.

I feel a little sheepish since we basically hijacked the original thread, but since the original topic is pretty much outdated and not active anymore, I guess it is ok. I kinda walked a user through the whole process of rooting/flashing a custom rom etc.

Note anything you don't understand and Google it.

You can root it and start playing around with some more advanced settings in the meantime. Wouldn't it really suck if you unlocked and a day or week later the digitizer would go bad? Asus could say: Sorry, pal - you're unlocked, you're out of warranty.
They have repaired even unlocked devices under warranty, but you can't count on it. And in some cases the repaired tablet came back with a permanently locked bootloader....
So give it a few weeks, in the meantime start reading the relevant thread of your favorite custom ROM(s) to get a feel for them, and familiarize yourself with the process and lingo of flashing.

Hi there,
When I had bought my tf700 I did'nt have a clue what custom rom is.
I was totally naive and ignorant as to Android technology.
I was disappointed with my TF700 performance and lived with it for a couple of months.
Afterwards, I searched the internet until I have found this marvellous forum (which attracts OCDs like the fire attracts moth).
I read and read and read and read, and read more and asked the fine users of this fine forum if I got it all right,
and then one springy night on the end of March 2013, something happened.
A magic...
"I took the red pill" , unlocked my TF700, pushed TWRP and flashed CROMI.
Everything went super.
Ever since then I follow Sbdags CROMI-X thread and keep update my firmware.
Just to remind you - I am not a Computer wizard, my occupation has got almost nothing to do with electronics and I am not a kid (actually I am 37 with many obligations like family and work - so my spare time is scarce).
And here I am - master of my TF700!
So - everything is possible!
And if you follow instructions and restrict yourself to the right method - you can be rest assured you won't brick your device.
Actually It's like cooking: you should find a good recipe and act accordingly.

It looks good, no damage, screen bleed that i can see. Screen seems fine.
Its running JRO3C.US_epad-10.4.4.25-20121228

I'm not really sure where to go from here - should I wait a few days or just unlock and put CROMI-X on now?
Speed of the system isnt bad, transitions seem a bit slow, havent really installed a bunch of apps yet...

But where's the fun in rational, right?
Well, while you decide - why not upgrade it to JB 4.2.1? Saves you a bootloader flash and clean install later....

Is 4.2.1 worth the update? I read that 4.2.1 caused a few issues for some people....
I probably will just flash it It feels like it should run quicker, take Maps for example. seems REALLY laggy but on my N7 it was fine?

JB 4.2 was better for most people, others had issues with Bluetooth tethering and some other stuff...
The reason I recommend you upgrade to stock 4.2 is mainly that then you automatically would have the correct bootloader on our tablet.
For Cromi-X you need the 4.2 bootloader. If you are on 4.1 you have to flash it before you flash Cromi-X, if you are already on 4.2 you're good to go. One less thing that could go wrong....

You could have got the Nook HD+ 32GB for $180 and dead easy to root and put CM 10.1 or Carbon on it and no concern of bricking it. Stock 2.1 on the HD+ is barely ok (very barely), but CM 10.1 rocks.
A little smaller tablet, but same great display resolution. I use this more than my iPad 4 now, which is both a compliment to the HD+ and an insult to how much I paid for the iPad 4.

Personally, when I had this problem, I just tried to run the app every day for a week oe so and it eventually works, but others have had to use tricks. Use the search for unlock, you will find several ideas about fixing it.
Just found out about the MAJOR lag issues surrounding it I have 14 days to return it. I was looking for a $400 tablet, not too old with good battery life and came across this.
Do the clean and cromi-x roms 'renew' it completely?
Would you have returned your tablet and gotten something else if you'd known this would happen??
Should i return it, or just keep it (and flash)?
I keep hearing people saying to get the nexus 10, but even that has its issues apparently (battery drain + slow charging).

Yes, clean rom cromi, cm10.1, etc.. speed up the device very well! it will fly
I own a TF300T and we have basicly the same thing on stock rom: very bad lag! so if you like stock i would reccomend crom-x/cleanrom or TF700 specific roms based on stock
Honestly i would return it and save the money for some upcoming device.It's one year old,you have to unlock it (and loose your warranty) in order to have more decent performance and you will mostlikely end-up spending more time to tweak the device than actually enjoy it.Ofcourse this is only my opinion,the final decision it's up to you.

If I had it to do over again...it would go back. Sorry to say that but you should NOT have to make ANY changes to a tablet that is supposed to be at the top of the line. My wife's AT105-T1032 Toshiba, is a lot more stable than the TF700.
Here are some of MY problems:
ANY browser will loose input from the onscreen keyboard...doesn't matter if it's Asus KB or Swiftkey or Google
The lag is so bad at times the KB won't appear for a second or two
ANY browser will just force close for no appearent reason...doesn't happen often but it does happen
The screen is loose on the lower right corner, I thought this issue had fixed itself but I noticed it again the other day
When posting on forums none of the browsers work correctly. They make it a horrible experiance and I usually have to give up and go to my PC to complete posts I want to make. If you insert a word that was mispelled it usually will appear at the top of the post you are making and delete any text it replaces. VERY VERY frustrating and has been an issue for me from day 1. (a year ago)
Here's how I intend to fix them:
When the warranty is up I will try rooting and unlocking and a different ROM. If I can't get that to make it work right for me I WILL take it out in the driveway and beat the living crap out of it, place it in a box and send it back to Asus with a detailed explanation of why they now have it in their hands
Now- it's your decision to make and you will probably read a lot of negitive replies as well as see quite a few on the forums about TF201 and TF700. It seems like people go to the forums to complain not realizing that they aren't supported by Asus. So get ready for more like this one but also you'll get quite a few saying how great this tablet is. It still all comes down to YOU.
I have NEVER been this frustrated by any computer and I'm not a happy Asus customer. BUT I will still buy Asus products, just no more tablets. I have an old P5GPL (P4) Asus motherboard that has been running for 8-9? years and has never given me one days trouble. I've replaced everything around it, power supply, hard drive and video card and it just keeps on keepin' on!

@Pretoriano80, after being on the custom rom for some time, do you see it using too much memory or getting sluggish? It's one year old but the new 10inch tablets are $500 and up. what option do i have?
I looked through your all in one guide but wouldn't know where to start since my tablet is already updated to 4.2.1.
So how would one unlock the bootloader if the instructions listed were for version below 4.2.1?
Does it mean Id have to downgrade to ICS first?
Also don't know what comes first, unlocking or rooting. Just rooting the device will not allow installation of Cromi-x/cleanRom right?
Please please return it...I know you will be tempted to unlock and install CROMI. But don't....I am using the tablet for the last 6 months I think. If it weren't for CROMI, I would have jumped over it in anger.

I kinda agree with the above, but I bought a used one of eBay not knowing what I'd gotten into. I just want to check email, watch movies, shop, etc. No real life-saving issues. Didn't notice much lag or problem with stock but went ahead and installed CROMI-X not knowing anything about android, etc. I love mine. At 400, maybe not, half the price, sure.

You can ROOT your device without unlocking your bootloader, but you can't install custom roms and a custom recovery in this case, just some apps that need rooting or some tweaks. The good part with only rooting is that your warranty will still be valid because you can return to a clean stock rom anytime. For rooting your device on 4.2.1 you will have to use MotoChopper (search in the tf700t forum).
If you unlock the bootloader then you can kiss goodbye your warranty and enjoy custom roms, custom kernels, etc but you can't go back to a bootloader locked state anymore.
No matter what you will choose (root or unlocking) don't expect miracles or else you will be disappointed. The first time you install a rom you will notice much gain in performance, but after you install some of your favourite apps you will see the performance going down again (imho this is also the reason why you can find bad and good opinions about this device, because everyone use it in different ways). Also forget about benchmarks it won't do any good to you or the device itself and you will just end-up just hunting higher scores.
I really don't know which device to recommend you becaause i only have this one, but read some reviews from trusted sites (Engadget for example was maybe one of the few to do a honest review about the tf700t) or wait until some new generation devices will be released.
Btw one year ago i paid 500€ just for the tablet so paying 500$ now for a new generation device it's in line with the tablet market in my opinion, so once again mate, it's your call.

I actually love this tab. I did do a lot of research before buying it though so I knew some issues before I bought so I also knew that I was not going to buy one for full retail and be happy. I did a lot of hunting around on craigslist and ended picking up a 64GB tab with the docking station and quite a few accessories for a little less than half of retail. I then immediately unlocked and rooted it, installed CROMI-X, and tried a coupe different kernels until I found the combination that worked for me. Finally I created a Nandroid of this setup and started using the tab.
I did have experience rooting and ROM'ing as well so I knew that I would be comfortable with that aspect and I always try to stay a little behind the curve of teh latest gadget so others can figure out how to fix the issues (because for every device there are issues).
As of right now I couldn't be happier. I got a tab that does everything I need it to and it seems sufficiently fast and responsive to me.
Would I have been happy if I paid full price a year ago and had to suffer through all of the issues that I hear being talked about on this forum? No. but at half price and time to give the great and dedicated developers on this site a chance to address the worst of the issues, Hell yeah, Great tab :good:

Thanks guys, I'll just return it then. I did a lot of research as well before picking this one...its a great tablet, but not worth full price considering its drawback. I'll probably wait for the next Infinity Pad that's coming out, although I've been hearing that even Tegra 4 has issues

Try cm 10.2 no more lag at all:thumbup:
I agree with everyone here. Return it. If you want a tablet right now just get the Nexus 10 or maybe even the Toshiba Excite Pro or sony experia z. If you want a kb dock get the HP slatebook x2 which I just bought and it a very speedy and smooth tablet. Screen isn't as high contrast and cant get as bright but it's not too bad. But if you can wait just wait for Asus to release the new Infinity pad and hopefully it performs as well as the slatebook x2. I have gotten so used to the tf700 that I did not realize how bad it really is even with cromi x or data2sd mod compared to the slatebook. So please take everyone's advice on this one.

I tried it and does get rid of transition stutter but it still lags here and there. It's still in its early stages so maybe it will get better but thats a big risk the OP will have to make.

Try CROMi-X 4.7. The only lag I get is on wake up since I disable wifi in deep sleep. No transition/scrolling lag whatsoever, browsing is lightning fast.

I've been on cromi x for a while now. You must've set your transition to 0 to not notice any lag in transition. There's still I/O issue no matter which cromi version or kernel. Anyway were getting off subject. Thanks for the advice. Let's get back on topic.

Try my latest beta version - I found some settings that may help some of the IO issues when downloading files or using the sdcard.

Hi guys, I am afraid I bear bad news . In a recent email exchange I had with Asus support I asked about updates to the TF700. They said the following:
ASUS has not planned a release of a firmware update for the TF700 which will revert the OS to KitKat 4 Android.
Unfortunately we have also not been advised of a release date for new firmware releases for your model. Currently we are also awaiting extra information of our R&D department on the matter.

This seems to suggest we will not get KitKat 4.4 but we may get another firmware update. This would possibly still be based on 4.2.1 with just some bug fixes specific to the TF700 or it could possibly be based on 4.3. However they don't have a release date for this yet.
I know this won't be entirely unexpected news for some people but rather a confirmation of what many of us already feared would be the case. It is indeed a shame given the TF700 is really not that old.
Good to know, Asus won't be getting my money again any time soon, looking at the Samsung note 10.1 to replace this apparently old machine

As far as I know, the R&D Department of ASUS is in Taiwan, and I highly doubt that ASUS UK has close communication with its Taiwan counterpart. Moreover, given my past experience, customer support usually doesn't have much technical knowledge to answer questions about stuff like OTA updates, bootloader unlocking, etc...
2. Comment: The way the quoted email was written is really weird. What is meant by "revert the OS to KitKat 4 Android"? "Revert to" means returning to a former state, which doesn't make sense when you talk about a future update. And what is "KitKat 4 Android"? I am sure that is not the way most people refer to Android 4.4 KitKat. The initial email was sent using the form on the Asus UK support page, although I do not think the representative who responded was necessarily based in the UK. They had an Asian name and judging from the way the email was written, I think that English is probably not their first language. The reply email was not UK specific either ([email protected]). The guy could actually have been based in Taiwan for all I know.
I think this guy is probably quite reliable as he seemed fairly knowledgeable when dealing with my other queries / complaints but yes he is just a customer support rep so there is a possibility of what he said not being 100% accurate. Still, I think it is the closest to an official word on the matter that we have had so far and seems pretty plausible.
Best way to get any respect on tablet updates is to Go Nexus.
I'm just waiting for the Nexus 10 2. Which will probably release in days if not a couple months at longest.
There are plenty of 3rd party keyboards and cases for 10” tablets, such as the Nexus 10. Which make them function and even look just like our TF700T.
I used to think of the Transformer line as unique. But if you look around. You'll find there's really nothing so special to the Transformer line. Now that 3rd parties have given other tablets, especially Nexus tablets. Every feature that seemed special about the Transformer line.

MicroSD slot? Battery in keyboard dock? USB port?
I gave up on waiting on updates to 4.3 or KK - this last week I finally bit the bullet and flashed CROMI-x. Painful process in that it took days to be successful in unlocking the bootloader - literally took dozens of tries before the tool finally worked. After that, all else was straightforward. I wasn't having any particular performance issues; rather, I got fed up with the random reboots that seem to occur at least once/day. Hopefully, that will improve with CROMI-x.

USB On the Go allows for storage expansion and addresses USB. And the fact the MicroSD storage is not utilized like in the pre-Android 4.0 days, means the MicroSD storage is not well leveraged when running stock. Far as charging, if this works with the Nexus 10 2, that would put Asus behind on that one.
I'm talking keyboards, but if such things interest you like MicroSD and a battery in the dock. You may continue with it and all the issues built into the TF700T. For me, I'm going to take the Nexus 10 2 off ramp.
Edit: I want to add, _that you have helped make the TF700T a better device and I do thank you for your efforts. Even running your kernel now .

I was not having performance issues early on. But the more I used it and the more I added, I found it slowing up big time. While my loaded up phone was having no issues at all. This is when I realized the talk about the slow storage on the TF700T is a big problem. That's when I moved to CROMI-x. It is better than stock, but the storage issue can only best be overcome by using ROM2SD with CROMI-x. (You need a very fast MicroSD.) That does help the most, but still, it's all patches around a big issue. And a tablet that has things right to begin with would run better.

I've had mine over a year and never ran into any real performance problems. While never as snappy as my 2012 & 2013 Nexus 7's or Galaxy S3, it was much better than my Xoom - I didn't see the severe issues that others have. But the random reboots (most occurred when just "idling", not during app use) were just maddening and made the tablet undependable in my mind. I haven't noticed any performance differences with CROMI-x yet but I'm really hoping that it is now more stable.
Tell me I'm wrong...isn't the Nexus made by Asus? Or am I thinking that just cause I'm old and senile?

The 7 inch Nexus are made by Asus and the 10 inch was made by Samsung.
I tried messaging Gary but I did not have high hopes as the account is dead for so long.
Does anyone know a new contact? Maybe they could say something more reliable about update policy regarding the TF700...

And a hinge. Mine stays docked almost all the time. I get clamshell protection and a handy portable package. Once you start trying to replicate the other features using accessories with other tabs, you get a bulky mess of stuff that you couldn't pay me to carry around.
Not that I'm exactly loving Asus these days, but the transformer certainly was special when I got it.

I totally agree with you. That is the main reason why I still hold on to the TF700 and not get the new Padfone Infinity ( the new Padfone has a Snapdragon 800, 1080p screen, fast internal storage, microSD support with performance that obliterates almost everything else). The only thing holding me back is the keyboard dock, without which the tablet experience is simply incomplete (in my opinion of course). If ASUS manages to bring the dock to the next Padfone and achieve decent size and weight, I will gladly make ASUS my go-to brand for all computing needs.

So... Anyone else shopping around for an upgrade this holiday season? I was looking at the tf701, but If it's going to have the same lack of development (I truly appreciate the hard work our few, but amazing, devs have put in), then I'd rather go for one of the new waterproof xperias or a galaxy tab. Haven't really looked into the various options yet.. I was excited when we got cm, and especially a pac-rom port, but every time I gave them a try, they just seemed a bit off. Like they were unfinished and obviously made for a phone. Maybe cromi just spoiled me. :shrug:
This tablet has been good to me, though. I got a micro-hdmi to hdmi cable, so maybe I'll use it as a media hub or something... If the native Linux on our device had more development behind it, and was just a tad more stable and compatible, I wouldn't really be looking into a replacement. Definitely not planning on getting rid of it. If I can find the time maybe I'll use it to delve deeper into learning how to develop myself.

I can't imagine a vendor ever matching the features and capabilities the ROM development community adds. I like that Asus offers a way to unlock the bootloader. Samsung would rather that you don't. In the year I've had this, there have been multiple firmware releases. For a minute, cromi was changing every other day. There is a new device they have to sell now. I'm happy. 5.2.2, btw is amazing! well I was hoping for Kit Kat too... seeing as its optimized for lower RAM devices I was thinking it would really help out stock. Its definitely time to flash now. My only question is if anyone knows if they're working on a Kit Kat version of CROMi???
