When using the Desire S should the Home, Menu, Back and Search buttons be hilighted? Is there a setting to turn it on if there is one as my eyes are bad and I quite often hit the wrong button by mistake.

Depends on what ROM you're using. Not possible to tweak it if you're on a Stock ROM.
If you're on a custom ROM, then all ROMs with the RCMix tweaks have a feature to keep the button backlight on all the time.
Just go to Rcmix tweaks>Display Options>Backlight settings>Set to "Always On" and you're done.
Hope that solves your problem.
Hi just to update it seems it`s not possible to highlight the soft keys(that is the Home, Menu, Back and Search keys) They are automatic, triggered by the ambient light sensor and from my point of view this is very annoying.
As I am running the stock rom at the moment I am looking at the market to see if there are any apps that will solve this. If anyone knows of any that can do this can you let me know?
Thanks

Like I said... Not possible on stock ROM. In my knowledge... There is no app in the market that can let you do that... Least of all, without root.

Another update, just found an App called Screen Filter it`s primary function is to control screen brightness but is has an option to Enable soft-key backlight. Just the job for me

stick a tiny black "electricity tape" over the sensor...that`s what i did and now i have them permanently on....the sensor is located a little above and to the left of the name HTC at the top...you can test exactly where it is using your fingertip
Ha why didn't I think of that.Sometimes the best solutions are the easiest ones

I was using this app for my G2X and thought it might be nice if the developer could make it work for the Sensation, since the notification light is so small. I emailed him to see if it was possible. Any interest in this let the developer know.
It's pretty cool, it lights up the bottom four keys and pulses them when you get a message, so when your screen is off you see the white lights blinking. You can set the times and if you want it to fade in and out.

cool app, i used it on my g2x also... think he can make our notification light blink in different colors? probably only green/red/orange... about to try an app I used on my mt4g to see if it works
I am using Gmail Notifier that I loved on my n1. Unfortunately, you can't select colors of the led (even limited choice that we see on the sensation).
I used the other one on my g2x as well but what I really want is to be able to tell which gmail account an email came from by led notification. Fingers crossed for someone to create something like this.

Will give bln a try once we have root and a kernel that supports it. Looks pretty cool.
Is this still possible now that we have temp root? I would really like this app to work on my sensation.

Found the App for this, it's called Led Me Know. Works perfectly for the led notifications. You have to enable keyboard light up and compatability mode.

What's keyboard light up and what does it do? I have it working on my Sensation, but it's pretty much like the stock notifications, nothing too different other than the frequency.

Do you mean the captive buttons? It doesn't work with compatibility checked. Only thing it does is flash the small led on top.
EDIT: Captive buttons do not light in my case. Do I need to check the box labeled screen on as well?
Ok I forgot to mention you have to have temp root and another app to make this work. Its called Light Flow and the way I made it work was having the paid app. I opened up Light Flow, it asked me for root access, I accepted it, then it asked me to turn on Accessibility. So i did and checked Light Flow. Once I did all that, I went back into the app and went to General Settings, clicked direct mode. Once I did that I scrolled a little further down to "Button back light control" and clicked the option "Control-when the screen is off". After that I went into "Notification" clicked "SMS" and scrolled down to "Button backlight LED" and chose "Solid". Now this is where LED me know comes into play.
I opened LED me know and I made sure "Compatability" was checked. I clicked all the services I want like SMS, Missed Calls, and Gmail. Now I clicked the "Notifications" tab and clicked SMS, I chose LED color to whatever I liked (Green) then chose the LED Frequency to Normal, but you can change that. After all that, checked Keyboard and Keyboard blink. Test it and see if it works.
Wow, I just tried the pre-release of LED me know, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13929058&postcount=495 and it asked for root permission. Ever since that, its been working great without having to do all these steps I posted. Can anyone try this method?

Just tried using this version and seems to be working well for me. No need to bother with the steps in the previous post.
So, you don't need paid LightFlow after all?

I was curious if there is any way that we could get a mod that can disable the HTC screen leap feature. Am I the only one that finds it annoying? It might actually make sense more usable for me. Any input is appreciated everyone. Especially from the devs. Thanks!

It is the pinch to zoom out function in Rosie. I have no idea how to disable it, but why do you want to? It is kinda hard to accidently zoom out I think

I guess the main problem I have is that I hit the Home button again and it zooms out. Maybe even disabling the key binding to it or something might be possible?

I saw a kernel i the dev section that allowed you to swipe across the back/home/app buttons to wake the device.
I dont remember which kernel it was though.

I don't think using the word RAPE earns you much respect.
Oh and it's a tablet not a phone.
I use screen off fx for powering down, gives a virtual powerbutton on your screen with some nice off-effects, and its free! That halves use of powerbutton.

Hello everyone,
So i bought a one X a couple months ago and it already came with a custom rom, i removed that and installed the Team Viper rom and currently have the latest version installed (April 10). The phone screen will not turn on during a call if you move the phone away from your ear like it should, the only way to get it to turn on is by pressing the power button and even then it only stays on for a few seconds and then turns right back off. Im not sure if this worked before i installed Viper. Any suggestions guys?

Do you have a case? Try placing a call and use your finger to left of the AT&T logo. I don't know much about viper but could be a setting (usually accessibility) that does that.

also is there a screen timeout? and im sure android has a feature where you can hang up using power button...again i am not sure about viper, but if you go to settings > accessbility > and make sure certain things are not checked, that can help...if that doest work, then your proximity sensor could not be working...does your auto brightness adjust accordingly?

There is no security lock for the homescreen, the auto brightness also works perfectly. I cant find anything in accessibility the only thing checked off is auto rotate screen. I think it may be the proximity sensor then because the digitizer on the phone looks like it was replaced.
The only other thing that I can think of is a screen protector that is blocking it or it has smudges that need to be cleaned. They have apps that calibrate proximity sensors but I have never used them.

I seen those up here. Search the forums or play store. Is the auto brightness using the same sensor or is it two? Tried looking, but can't tell.
Sent from my Carbon-ize Evita using xda-developers app
I believe it is two. If both auto brightness and proximity were running off the same sensor, they would both act up. I think. Just a theory. But if it is one sensor then the calibration app should work.
