Tips / Apps to improve multitask - myTouch 4G General

Hello everyone,
I'm searching tips or apps to improve multitasking on my Panache.
A simple usage :
1- Listen music with poweramp browsing the web
2- Click a youtube link (start youtube apps)
3- music stop (auto) and I watch the youtube video.
4- Try a couple of video and click Back a couple of time to exit youtube and go back to the browser.
5- Long press home, select poweramp
6- Restart the music and click back to go back to browser
There's a lot of back and forth...
What I hate in this little scenario is to go back mulitple time and to reopen poweramp to restart the music.
What could be ideal for me is some kind area where I could access all running process, see my notifications, send command to process (API), etc...
I made a small prototype UI with the Gimp :
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
This area could be called by long press on home or any other shortcut and should be configurable (choose quick acces, change poweramp for another player...)
So what do you think ?
Any similar apps available on the market ?
How do you manage multi tasking on your phone?
Regards.

well the most multitasking I do on my phone is listen to music via playerpro/browse xda app/download files using opera mobile/checking up on fantasy football...and never experienced any problems or lag with anything. OC settings at 1017/368 superbad. I normally just keep all of my most used apps on a homescreen with a playerpro widget to keep it all in one place. I have the auto-kill option set for the back button also so I can kill an app on the fly

I don't have any lag. What I want to improve is to quicly switch between applications and to control background service more easily.

well usually on different roms or launchers(or at least on CM7 and MIUI), you can press and hold the home button and a list of your recent apps will pop up so you can switch easily
regarding the OC settings, its from an app SetCPU that lets you control the overclock values

Long press home and you'll see everything that is running which are your recents. Its as simple and quick just to long press home the tap where you want to go.

Hello,
I'm already using the home shortcut to access the recents apps.
This is great but I was searching something with richer feature.
The best way could be a combination of icons/folders/widget on my default desktop but I prefer a minimal look (just my launcher and a clock)...
Maybe I should check CM7 source and try to add my idea to the home shortcut

I use swipepad. Check it out.

I would say - try to find another music player, that can auto-resume playing.

Hello everyone,
I found this on the market :
https://market.android.com/details?id=sg.ruqqq.quickdesk
It's like swipepad but allowed widget. I'm launching it with home long press.
I'm testing it but I'm quite happy with the result right now.

Hey.. if you're willing to switch, the Creamed Glacier ROM (ICS) has that feature. Similar to long pressing home on other ROMs, except it gives you more control. Basically leaves each app running in the background for easy and efficient switching between apps, without losing progress =)
I hope that's what you were asking for. If not, apologies for misunderstanding!
Oh and HAPPY NEW YEAR =D

Thanks SH31KH!
ICS ROM looks awesome. I'm not ready to switch yet (I need my camera) but I'm following the development closely.

[APP][-v1.0.1-][14/6/11]AppGrouper, a simple, catagorised app launcher for android.

[OK, got some stuff done this weekend (not too much, got some family going over to a different country for a year, so they had to be ... sent off, merrily )]
It seems that with every mobile OS released, I hate the way you launch apps. I always end up with tons of apps and it always gets tedious to find and launch the one I want quickly.
To solve that, I've made AppGrouper. It's a quick, simple, catagorised application launcher. The idea is to pin the app to your homescreen, and launch your apps from there. It frees up all that homescreen real-estate into just one button:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
You add apps by just hitting the "ADD APP" icon or long clicking on any app icon after you've added an app to a category. You can add category buttons (or rename/delete them) by long clicking on a category button.
This is version 1.0 of my first android app, so be gentle
Nah, just kidding: send/post everything and anything you find broken (I don't expect much to be) or would like different or to be added. Don't be shy Even if you don't like the colour
PS: this works great on my Desire HD, both on Froyo and Gingerbread. I'm real curious to know if it works on other devices!
--UPDATE 14/6/11--
Thanks for all the feedback, guys! It really helps!
Anyway, I posted v1.0.1:
-fixed scrolling issue
-cleaned up interface (you won't notice ... much)
-code cleanup (removed some calls which were unnecessary)
Still working on:
-swipe gesture
-multi-select of apps to be added to group
-getting the app to recognize that your trying to launch the context menu when you hit an empty GridView item (Man, that's obtuse! I really don't want to write my own onTouch listener and throw away the contextmenu code )
Also, ITS IN THE MARKET!!!11!!01!
So, if you're using this (as I suspect a few of you are ), donate me a cup of coffee for the hours I've been putting into this by buying it on the market, please! Thanks! Maybe I can take my girlfriend out to celebrate

Finally... I uploaded a draft apk to Market, so now you guys get a shot Let me know if it works for you and what changes you'd like and what advice you have!
Just installed and testing it out, really like what I see so far. One issue I have found. Selecting transparent background does not stick. The next time I launch the app the background is back to default.
And a suggestion, you might want to make adding additional apps once the first one has been added more intuitive. I had to try several different options before I found I needed to long press the existing shortcut to add new one.
Great work.
EDIT - I have an Inspire running CoreDroid 6.7.
Ah ... uh ... Heh, the transparency thing Yeah, I should fix that. I just never use that option, so I kinda left that to v1.0.0.1
As for the shortcut adding, what would you say would be a better way of doing that? Just adding a "help" menu explaining it, add a menu option to "add shortcut", allow right clicking the free space next to the icons ... any suggestions are welcome!

I was thinking long press anywhere in the open space (that's what I tried first) or "add shortcut" in the menu. You could do both if you want to cover all bases. I think long press should be adequate though. Maybe short press and icon to change it. I will keep testing and send anymore feedback your way.

I agree with making it a long press to add shortcut. Running smooth on my captivate on 2.3.3

I already use Apps Organizer, do I have any reason to potentially switch? Just wondering how this app is unique when apps like Apps Organizer and other app categorizers have been around since nearly Android's inception.. Pardon me if I am uninformed
Well, it's nice to have choices. Try them all and keep whichever you like best. So far I like this one just fine. Well done dev.

I was wondering this too. One I used since i my Hero was Folder Organiser. Does this add any new features?
My understanding is that something that this app offers and Apps Organizer doesn't is that you access your apps by launching the app itself rather than a shortcut or a widget.
The upside of that approach is that it should work with any launcher and any dock. Regina Launcher, for instance, only supports apps in its dock so that's a perfect solution for that.

Not only that but I've been using a app called "Auto App Organizer" for some months now that automatically categorizes (or manual upon installation) all your installed apps like Apps,Games,Fun,Internet,System,Multimedia etc etc. You can also set shortcut icons on home screen to the categories that open as folders when clicked on home. This is the best and most efficient way ive found of installing/organizing our app shortcuts.
@ OP
If you want some ideas you should really have a look at this app.
ths...i'm trying it now...lol
One thing I think would be kind of nice is being able to rearrange or sort apps in each group. Like if I wanted them alphabetical but I added an app that starts with the letter a after I had already made the group

And in addition to the problem mentioned above:
Could you add:
- a gesture to swap between categories
- an option to size categories (to get a bigger bracket even though you use an abbrevation like "dev")
- sorting personally or alphabetically
- various appearance options --> design =]
But try to keep it simple because categorization programmes like mentioned above are way too overloaded in my opinion.

[HOW TO] Make your Play the perfect in-car MP3 player!

Okay, so this thread may seem a bit odd, but there are people (myself included) who use their Xperia Play to blare music through their car stereos while driving. I've found that the best way to do this and not veer off the road (hey thanks SE for the really difficult to unlock phone.. ) is to do the following:
1) get root here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312859
2) download PowerAMP from the marketplace (just because I like poweramp... you can do this with the stock music player as well... blah.)
3) Download the free app "Change Shoulder Buttons" from the market
4) Go to the change shoulder app, click mode, then media.
5) Accept root permissions, do the Charleston, and rejoice!
The best way to change songs while on the road is to hit the home button (which lights up the screen) then hit the R shoulder button. It will change the song without you even having to unlock it!
I know this tutorial seems fairly obvious, or dumb, or common sense, but maybe I just saved someone out there from running over a cat because their stupid lock screen swipey thing wouldn't swipe, and they really didn't want to listen to That One Song.
Or you can get PlayerPro (which you should have anyway because it's the absolute best mobile media playing experience of any mobile operating system) and have a media player integrated right there in your lock screen :3

Ah, this looks great, but I made this thread on the idea of "eyes on the road, not on your phone" and although the lockscreen would be awesome for while I'm walking or something, I like having the ability to change songs without looking at my phone. Then again, for the life of me I cannot use my touch screen without looking, and I'm sure that most people here can do that. xP
Thank you for the find though! I will give it a try when I get home.

Just Shake app allows volume buttons to be used for previous/next track when the music player is playing or when the headphones are pluged in. Has many other features too like silencing the ring tone with the turn of the phone, answering/hanging up calls with a shake, or launchng apps with the shake when not phoning, and I believe does not require root. Also vibrates when the call ends. Give free trial a go, I purchased the app but do have a problem with it sometimes dying in the background - maybe converting it into system app if you have root fixes that - I will test.
I just use doubletwist for itunes syncing with my phone upside down in the car (since they put the lockscreen buttons on the bottom). Works well enough since I'm not dead or anything yet and it's free. It's just annoying that applications have a sucky/lack of support for creating dynamic playlists as compared to ipod touch/iphone.
CyanogenMod 7.1 uses the volume buttons to raise/lower volume and change songs with any music player.

increasing your Dalvik VM Heapsize may also help you with that problem
Depending on your car Bluetooth music is pretty nice. While the sound quality is a bit lower, I can connect to my phone without even taking it out of my pocket, and my steering wheel controls work to allow me to change tracks! Also on Pandora the controls move you to the next track. If I hit the source button on my steering wheel to go to the radio or something my phone pauses automatically as well. This is all built in I had no modifications made to the phone to do this.
My car is a 2010 Camaro SS, but I would imagine any GM car with BT music should do this. And any other brand for that matter.

I haven't gone Dalvik root yet, but was considering doing Link2SD to get more memory - what do you think about link2sd versus Dalvik cache please? By the way Just Shake has not failed since i made it a system app so far. I tried the same trick with "Skype on 3" but it still closes in background by itself - maybe this one does it when I lose internet or mobile connection in the tube etc.

Link2sd is better. To change the dalvik vm heapsize all you have to do is pull your build.prop open in wordpad, find the line that says dalvik vm heapsize =. And change the number to 48m. This will allow background apps a little more memory before system closes them

[APP][2.1+] Floating Music Controls

Floating Music Controls
This is an app created to control your music over any app, so you can play fullscreen games and switch between songs... Yes! You can play Angry Birds and also skip that song you hate, or stop the music to hear the game sound effects .
Still in beta, so don't expect a perfect app.

Configuration:
Opacity: Sets the main window opacity.
Position: Sets the main window position between the four corners. Sometimes, when orientation changes, the position is reset to the top-left corner.
Service mode:
Silent: You won't be notified about the service execution, but the service could be killed when free memory is requested by system.
Persistent (notification): A notification will be shown, but your app will be hard to die.
Show/Hide:
Timeout: It will try to detect when music is being played, checking if the sound is kept more than 5 seconds.
Shaking device: Shake your device to show/hide the controls.
Features:
Pause, next and previous buttons.
Those can be hidden only by tapping the main icon.
Can be shown or hidden shaking the device.
Configurable opacity.
It can be easilly closed once we finished using it.
It works with almost any music player.
Requeriments:
The music player we where going to use must allow and be configured to use the "Headset Control". If app doesn't works, please, check your player configuration.
First run:
When you start the app the first time, you will not see any music control or notification. This is because default settings are Silent service and Timeout window display, so you will have to start playing music with any music player and the window will be shown.

I really like this. I have a gingerbread Rom and its a little laggy. Not much, but compared to the other floating apps or pop up apps its a little laggy. I would also love the ability to move the controls any where.
-How about different controls. Holo theme, walkman theme...etc.
-Ability to prepare settings when tapping the app.
-Pinch resizing.....
Just some thoughts. Really good job on this.

Maybe I'm being too picky. It wasn't responding as fast as I wanted it to. Laggy wasn't the word I wanted to use, but its just not responsive enough for me. Although I really like it and still use it.
I'll be looking forward to any future updates.
Well, to perform the actions, you have to double tap the button, but i'll explain:
As a "security" feature, to not launch an action accidentally, you have to press the button "twice". The first tap will "select" the button. Once the button is "selected", the next time you press the button (only once, not twice), will perform the desire action (stop music, open config dialog, etc).
Do you understand what i mean?
At first I was thinking I wouldn't have a need for an application like this since I can quickly change tracks from the notification bar, but then I realised using this would be MUCH easier when using some form of navigation app as you don't need to swipe down the notification bar which stops you being able to see the directions being given.
This would be awesome if it worked with Pandora and other streaming music services like that!

Nice app layout, love it. Can you integrate beatport charts? Also, theme looks like miui albeit a bit on holo side will look awesome. Just my suggestion. Love it.

I'm not sure if the app's name is wisely chosen, given that "AudioGrabber" is known as a CD ripper in the late 90s, probably copyrighted by Real Networks.
Which Source do you use? And is this legal
Best yet. I wonder if it will be blocked.
Love the app so beauty so fast

Well, this was the idea, we are not trying to break their copyright - this is just a name for a small app, a flash from the past for those who remember!)

We can try, but not sure if this will work correctly. But we thought about it already, to make some more tabs with different resources charts.
please help
when you download a file 'name of song' error occurred repeat later.
how to fix
The app seems to be working great but I can't permanently remove the apps notification from the status bar. Not even a long back press to force quit it works. I have to freeze it in titanium backup. Anyway to quit out of the application appropriately?

There is such a bug on some songs, we'll fix that in the update coming in a few days. But that's only for some particular songs, wright? If this is happening to all the songs, then it's possible that the source is closed in your country, for example we had to remove the app already from Italian Play Store, cause the source is banned in their country...

Notification is removed, when you press the pause button in there, we made it like thatm so the music wouldn't stop, when you accidently clear the notifications... If not, please write back, we'll try to fix that!)

Nope im from U.S.A
I was skeptical about using your app but decided to try it out and Im glad I did. I was able to find songs ive been looking for but haven't been able to find before :thumbup: great app
I finally created an xda account
This is one incredibly sleek looking app.. Good job!
May I ask how it obtains the mp3 files? You could always program it to use VK.com. They have an incredible collection of mp3s.
EDIT: After some searching for obscure song titles and seeing them in the results, I can only assume that this app does infact uses VK.com (or?)... Which is awesome
EDIT2: Incase you're still working on this app, maybe I suggest a feature to disable the built in player? To avoid any ongoing notifciations, etc. Getting the mp3s downloaded is good enough for me, maybe a "open" button to open the downloaded mp3 in any audioplayer.

Sadly, the app is no longer in the Play Store...( It was removed, so we have to stop our work on that, and you can enjoy the apk stored in here.

Does no play store mean you dont feel like working on the app? Sometimes a thread on xda is plenty fine.
nice app. :thumbup:

Do you have to pay for the songs or are they free? Also what is the quality of the mp3 file (kbps)?
Please keep developing on this. If not open source it

SEARCH EVRYTHING
Hey guys,
Iv'e published my new app for android power users who have lots of files on their device and want easy access to them. It's called Search Everything. It's a file search app that scans your file system and indexes it. Then filters the list by your search term. The result is a fast almost instant results. It operates much like the program "Everything" on windows.
Google Play Link:

Would like to hear some feedback
I'd really love to use this app full time but it does not list any files on my external SD (/storage/sdcard1).
Also, a few basic optinos like show/hide hidden files or garbage files from cache folders.
On the plus side, I really love the sheer speed and i like the color and simple interface design.
Hope there's an update sooon!
Good work, thanks much!

Looks great but could you add option to show files thumbnails?
Great app, fast and smooth search but it did not index my external SD card. Couldn't find any thing in my SD card.
Sony Xperia ZL running lastest PAC nightly.
Gets force close at every startup. Running stock rom 4.4.4 franco kernel
Great app very fast any plans for root and website searches?
Quick and simple, but on open containing folder rootexplorer 2.x opens the default home directory instead..
The app works great- just like Everything
I've got a suggestion- it would be great if you could make a widget like google's quick search bar, or an app "in" the notification bar (like Notable).
And if it could search apps too.
I know it's a lot- but it's just to get you thinking if you want to add something (the app works great as it is, for me)

LOL you beat me to it. I was gonna suggest the same.
This app is great! Exactly what I have been searching for for a long time! Here are a few more suggestions:
Option to exclude specific locations from being indexed/searched.
Option to launch the app by pressing the search capacitive button, instead of the default google search app.
EDIT: forgot to mention the reason to exclude specific locations - don't really need the gallery thumbnail files in search, do we?
And what about searching/launching apps? Possible? Planned?
Great app, great work
I have now installed this app on my Nexus 7(2013), Nexus 5, and a Motto E and it works amazingly well.
I have been using ES File explorer since I did my first Android device root about 5 years ago and it has been my goto method of searching my devices ever since. But, as anyone who has done this knows it is painfully slow.
Your app has finally changed that and I could not be more grateful.
Thank you for all of your work it is greatly appreciated!
FC while indexing
Fantastic idea. 'Everything' on the PC is so useful, and this is no different. I don't need it to be able to open or view a file, just find where it is, that's been the painfull part upto now.
I do however get PC's every time during indexing, once it gets to around 32K+ files.

I am also getting a FC on startup. Running PA with Franco kernel. Nexus 5.

This would be a great feat, but imo, only if the search-speed isn't affected

I'm again worried about speed, but if you are looking for a fast and easy way to launch apps you could try App Dialer https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=name.pilgr.appdialer
